Giraffes at Guadalajara Zoo

The most important zoo in Latin America, the Guadalajara Zoo is Mexico’s answer to the San Diego Zoo. The most important zoo in Latin America, the Guadalajara Zoo is Mexico’s answer to the San Diego Zoo. It’s home to more than 2,000 animals from 360 different species, and from giraffes and tigers to penguins, sharks and exotic birds, everyone will find their favorite animals here.

The perfect day at the Guadalajara Zoo starts with Sky Zoo, the zoo’s canopied chairlift. Ride it and you’ll get a preview of what’s to come as you glide over treetops with a bird’s eye view of gorillas, bison, lions and orangutans below.

After getting your bearings, it’s time to see the animals up close. First stop: Monkeyland, home to primates from the Americas and Africa. Don’t forget to feed the cute squirrel monkeys!

Next up is Herpetario, Latin America’s largest reptile and amphibian exhibit, where about 70 species of crocodiles, snakes, lizards, tortoises and arachnids call home.

After seeing all of the creepy crawlies, stop by Selva Tropical, where you’ll learn about rainforest ecology and see chimpanzees, tigers, capybaras and anteaters, as well as macaws and other tropical birds.

By this point, most people will be hungry, and the zoo has a couple of choices. The food court offers inexpensive food options or visitors can bring a picnic lunch. Either way, the views of the Barranca de Huentitan Canyon from the dining area are gorgeous.

After lunch, relax and let the zoo’s train chauffeur you around the zoo. Get off at any stop that interests you or take the entire 45-minute loop back at the food court and continue exploring the rest of the zoo.

Next, it’s time to check out Rancho Veterinario, where children can become veterinarians for a day. They’ll learn tips about how to care for pets and also have the opportunity to visit the ranch’s petting zoo.

Then comes one of the zoo’s highlights, Safari Masai Mara. Cheetahs, antelopes and other African animals run free on a vast savannah as visitors tour the area on a jeep and even stop to feed the giraffes.

From the hot African savannah, head to Antartida, the zoo’s Antarctica exhibit. The South Pole temperatures will be refreshing and the Gentoo and Adélie penguins are delightful.

Then, visit Aquarius, the zoo’s aquarium. Ninety-five species of fish and other aquatic creatures live in its fresh and saltwater habitats, including clown fish, jelly fish, piranhas and manta rays. Those daring enough can even swim with the sharks — or rather, in a see-through acrylic capsule that lets swimmers get inches away from them without being in danger.

The last stop includes animals unlike any other at the zoo. Dedicated to the extraordinary continent down under, Villa Australiana is home to kangaroos, wallabies and several kinds of Australian parrots and parakeets, among other animals.

  • Opt for the diamond package, which includes the safari, train and Sky Zoo
  • Plan to spend about four hours at the zoo
  • Be prepared to walk up and down hills
  • Drink plenty of water, wear a hat and put on sunscreen

The Guadalajara Zoo contains the usual suspects – rhinos, giraffes, monkeys and more – but what's unique is that many of the enclosures don't have barriers separating the visitors and the more than 4,000 animals that call the zoo home. This means that giraffes can eat right from visitors' hands and that monkeys can climb all over patrons. The zoo also boasts an aquarium, an area devoted to Australian animals and a herpetarium, among other attractions. What's more, travelers can board a safari truck to see the zoo's collection of African animals or hop on its chair lift, which gives you a bird's-eye view of the zoo's flora and fauna.

Recent travelers said that to really see this enormous zoo (which spans several hundreds of acres), you'll need more than one day. Additionally, many were impressed by the immaculate landscaping and the animals, which looked happy and cared for.

The Guadalajara Zoo is open daily during the summer and holiday seasons from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., but the property closes on Mondays and Tuesdays when school is in session. Standard admission costs 80 Mexican pesos (about $4) for adults and 47 Mexican pesos (around $2.50) for kids; upgraded tickets that include chair lift and train rides, safari excursions and entry into the aquarium are also available. Zoo facilities include ATMs, restrooms and multiple restaurants and gift shops. The best way to reach the zoo (which is about 5 miles from central Guadalajara) is by taxi or rental car. For more information, visit the zoo's website .

#1 Rotonda de los Jaliscienses Ilustres

The Rotonda de los Jaliscienses Ilustres, or Rotunda of the Illustrious Jaliscans, is a circle of 17 Doric columns and a monument to the region's favorite writers and revolutionaries. In fact, bronze statues of teacher Irene Robledo García, artist José Clemente Orozco and 20-some others ring the rotunda. Some of their ashes are even tucked into the monument.

Recent travelers said the rotunda is a great place to get a quick dive into the history of Guadalajara. Many also suggest viewing the monument at night when it's lit by multi-colored lights

7 Valuable Tips For Visiting The Guadalajara Zoo in Mexico

safari zoo de guadalajara

After a few weeks in Costa Rica , we are back in Mexico! We’ve been hanging out in Guadalajara and seeing all that the city has to offer. Just this week, we visited the market, tried out traditional pre-Hispanic food (lots of roasted bugs!), and even spent the day at the Guadalajara Zoo. In our typical travel fashion, we’re slow traveling . But we’re still taking advantage of some sight-seeing when we can.

It’s funny how, after five months of being in Mexico, this country is starting to feel like home. When we came to Guadalajara, we instantly fell in love with the city. There are so many things to do in Guadalajara, Mexico, and yet it’s not overrun with tourists. It really feels like a city we could live in.

Guadalajara really feels like a city that families could live in. And it's packed with family friendly activities, like the Guadalajara Zoo! Read more to find out why you'll love this zoo, and my tips for making the most of your visit.

Is Guadalajara safe to visit?

Guadalajara is located in the Mexican state of Jalisco. With a population of over 5 million people, Guadalajara is the second most populous city in Mexico. The city is bustling, but it's also a city on the rise. You can see it in the cleanliness of the streets, the popularity of its food scene, and the trendy neighborhoods. It’s a fun city to get around. Visiting Guadalajara with kids is much easier than you think.

Safety can be a concern for a big city like Guadalajara. But we found that walking around Guadalajara with kids was very safe. The city is very walkable, especially during the day. And in the evenings, we mainly relied on using Uber , which is available in Mexico, to get around. So we rarely felt unsafe while we were there.

Visiting Guadalajara with kids

When you get to Guadalajara, take some time to orient yourself to the city. It’s not too hard to get around Guadalajara with kids. Avenida Ignacio Vallarta (which runs East to West) and Avenida Chapultepec (which runs North and South) are two popular streets with restaurants and shopping areas. You can refer to the Lonely Planet Mexico guide book to orient yourself with things to do in Guadalajara.

Some of our favorite things to do in Guadalajara , Mexico was walking around the Centro. This is the historical part of town, and is full of great restaurants and Spanish colonial style buildings. We also enjoyed trying out some of Guadalajara’s many restaurants. The city has a pretty vibrant food scene. But by far, one of our favorite things to do in Guadalajara with kids was visit the Guadalajara Zoo.

What is the Guadalajara Zoo?

Guadalajara Zoo, called El Zoológico Guadalajara , is located in the north-eastern part of the city, on Paseo del Zoológico 600. The zoo is near the Plaza Independencia shopping center.

Tickets to the zoo come in a variety of packages, ranging from 95-315 pesos (roughly $5-$16) for adults, and 58-235 pesos (roughly $3-$12) for kids. The basic package includes just admission to the zoo. Other packages include access to the zoo aquarium (different from the Guadalajara Aquarium) and the Safari Masai Mara park. Additionally, there is a sky tram, essentially a cable car, that is included in some of the more premier packages.

Ready for a change? Take the first step to living a life of full time travel.

Why you should visit the Guadalajara Zoo

One reason why families will love the Guadalajara Zoo is that there are a few different ways to see the animals. Besides walking through the grounds of the zoo, visitors can take a train that circles through the zoo, past many of the exhibits. There is also a sky tram that traverses through the zoo, so you can see the animals from up above.

The zoo has well-maintained facilities, and a variety of animals. We loved seeing the unique exhibits for the animals. The monkey exhibit had a series of mesh tunnels strung across the trees that the monkeys could walk through! How cool!

The zoo, itself, rivals famous zoos like those in San Diego or Singapore . We were very impressed by the Guadalajara Zoo, and were glad that we took the time to visit with our kids. I would even say it's one of the best zoos in Latin America!

Visiting the Guadalajara Zoo with kids

Our tips for visiting the Guadalajara Zoo

For families planning to visit Guadalajara with kids, a trip to the Guadalajara Zoo is a must-do! Zoos make excellent worldschooling resources for families to learn about animals and nature.

Here are a few of our tips to help you enjoy your trip to the Guadalajara Zoo.

1. Set aside the whole day to explore the Guadalajara Zoo

Wondering to yourself, "how big is the Guadalajara Zoo?" Well, the answer is, it's massive! Covering 50 hectares, it would take the whole day to walk through the whole zoo, especially if you have young kids.

If you’re planning a visit to the zoo, set aside the whole day for your visit. This will give you and your kids a chance to really see the exhibits, rather than rush through them.

Visiting Guadalajara Zoo with kids

2. Opt for the Premier or Diamond package for zoo entrance

There are several ticket options for the Guadalajara Zoo, which makes the Guadalajara Zoo price structure a bit confusing for families. The base price for Guadalajara Zoo tickets is 95 pesos (roughly $5) for adults, and 58 pesos (roughly $3) for kids. This will get you into the basic exhibits. However, the zoo has several additional exhibits that cost a premium: the aquarium, the Antarctic exhibit, the train, the sky zoo, and the safari experience.

I suggest opting for the Diamond package, which covers all the additional exhibits for a total of 315 pesos (roughly $16) for adults, and 235 pesos (roughly $12) for kids. This gives you the most bang for your buck! Just to note, there’s a height restriction on the Sky Zoo (a sky tram that runs throughout the zoo). So if your kids aren’t tall enough, your next best option is to purchase the Premier package, which covers everything but the Sky Tram. The cost is 265 pesos (roughly $13) for adults and 180 pesos (roughly $9) for kids.

Zebras at the Guadalajara Zoo

3. Follow the rules of the Guadalajara Zoo

If you’re planning a trip to the zoo during your visit to Guadalajara with kids, be sure to follow the rules of the zoo. Most of the rules are self-explanatory, and are in place to keep you and the animals safe. Aside from supervised zoo activities, do not feed the animals. And be sure to keep a safe distance from the animals to avoid either of you getting hurt.

Giraffes at the Guadalajara Zoo

4. Spend some time at the aquarium and the safari

We think the Guadalajara Zoo is a great option for families looking for things to do in Guadalajara, Mexico as there are so many different ways to experience the zoo. As I mentioned earlier, besides the basic exhibits, there is also an aquarium, with a domed tank where you can see sharks swimming above you! There’s also a safari experience where you can feed giraffes right from the palm of your hand.

These parts of the zoo cost extra, but we think the extra cost was absolutely worth it. We loved looking at the different types of fish at the aquarium. And my daughter was so thrilled that she had a chance to feed a giraffe!

5. Pick and choose the animals you want to see at the Guadalajara Zoo

Even though we set aside a good chunk of the day for our visit to Guadalajara Zoo, it was impossible for us to see everything! If you’re planning to visit the zoo, I recommend that you prioritize the animals that you want to see. That way, you can make sure you see the ones you truly want to see. And you won’t get disappointed if you miss out on the animals you weren’t too interested in seeing anyway.

A shark at the Guadalajara Zoo

6. Use the train to get around quickly

Our kids are still pretty young, and walking around a giant zoo like Guadalajara Zoo can get pretty tiring. One of the benefits of purchasing the packages is that you can ride the train around the zoo. This let us go from one end of the zoo to another. Another benefit was when our kids got tired, we used the train ride as an opportunity for them to rest their little feet.

safari zoo de guadalajara

7. Bring your own snacks for the day

The food at Guadalajara Zoo is okay, as far as zoo food goes. During our visit, we had a lunch of pizza for the kids, and carne asada for the grown-ups. But the line was long, as it was a busy day, and we ended up waiting to order for over an hour!

If you don’t want to wait for food, I suggest bringing your own snacks to the zoo. Just be sure to discard of your garbage in the appropriate receptacles. Better yet, bring your food in some portable containers. That way you can easily store the containers back in your bag after you eat.

Here are some eco-friendly containers that we like using:

Collapsible containers

Stashers silicon zip close bags

Beeswax wraps

Activities beyond the Guadalajara Zoo

We loved visiting Guadalajara Zoo, and we’re glad we took some time to visit there while we were in Guadalajara. But we also enjoyed exploring all the other things to do in Guadalajara, Mexico as well.

If you have some time to spend in Guadalajara with kids, take an afternoon exploring Centro. You can also visit the Mercado Libertad, or rent bikes at the Parque Metropolitano. All of these activities are great things to do in Guadalajara, Mexico to complement your visit to the zoo.
