Music Cruises

CruiseMapper logo

At CruiseMapper's Music Cruise survey you will find departure dates, itineraries, and various "music and dance" theme cruise information and tips. We offer you a list of Classical music concerts and dance cruise specials on deals to visit the Caribbean, Europe, and Australia on a big cruise ship vacation. Caution - music cruises are super fun, generally promoting a lot of drinking and dancing activities. Cruise drinking and dancing fun generally involve big money spending. Very special are also all the music concert voyages on big riverboats in Europe.

For your convenience, the following link jumps down directly to CruiseMapper's music-cruises schedule , listing lines, ships, departure dates, and homeports. Follow Mardi Gras Carnival cruises visiting the US port cities New Orleans Louisiana, Galveston Texas, Tampa Florida, Long Beach (Los Angeles) California, NYC New York, Mobile Alabama, and of course - Rio De Janeiro (Brazil). This survey is integrated with our Themed Cruises .

"Dance and Music" themed cruises

Themed as "Music Cruises" deals are from the list of the industry's newest inventions. They are very similar to all the music concerts arranged at land-based facilities (music halls, theaters, stadiums, etc. And since modern cruise ships can accommodate from 2500 (on average) to more than 5000 people, these so special marine vessels become the perfect place for the mixed "music concert and party" cruise vacation the world has never seen before.

From what Wikipedia has said about music - it's the art form "whose medium is sound and silence". However, on cruise ships there's no such thing as silence - it's party time all the time! The word "music" derives from Greek "mousike" meaning the "art of the Muses". And what is better than a Muses-inspired vacation of several days at sea, right?

Dance-themed cruises

The dance cruise experience is a major part of the "Music Cruise" specials - especially when famous bands and singers are involved in these actions. And these "musical" deals suggest a hell of a lot dancing on the ship. Imagine you can enjoy (if fortunate enough) your super cool band's performance at sea. There are some truly unique sailings, which include huge crowd dancing parties featuring NKOTB (with the "New Kids On The Block" celebrities).

Christian-themed music cruises are another unique offer in this category. On those, you'll enjoy the company of hundreds and even thousands of like-minded folks sharing your ideas of God, right and wrong. And quite often, preachers there dance and enjoy the music more than the audience itself.

Popular musical genders on the specially themed music and dance cruises are Rock, Country, and Folk bands. And Classical music and Jazz themed cruises offer one truly sophisticated experience at sea. Often music-themed sailings are combined with specials from the category of Food and Wine cruises . These are usually Jazz- or Classic music-themed (often river cruise) deals, offering a gourmet voyage on some of Europe's biggest rivers, such as the Danube, or Rhone and Seine in France.

P&O Cruises UK ships offer each year several Music Cruises leaving from Southampton, and their Australia brand may offer such themed deals from Sydney, Australia. Most of them are Mediterranean cruises from Southampton, and  Cruises To Nowhere from Sydney - i.e. without additional ports of call (which significantly lowers their cost by not including port charges).

How much do "Music Cruises" cost,  what is included in prices?

Your dance/music cruise infrastructure is pretty much like a normal sailing - but it's not, ok? The cruise part as always, includes tanning, swimming, drinking, dining, sleeping (with the "repeat until" command) summarized as "easy big-time fun". Your "music cruise tickets" prices are inclusive of all meals on the boat and add to that the 24-hr room service onboard. This means all main dining rooms and the buffet dining, specialty restaurants charge extra (from ~$20 to $50 per meal). Alcohol, soda and soft drinks are not in the list of inclusions.

Beware - enjoying the music cruise fun in a not healthy and not cheap combination with lots of beverages could cost you way more than the ticket itself. Virtually all music and dance cruise deals are on round-trip departures from some of the world's biggest cruise ports - like Miami and Fort Lauderdale in Florida, NYC New York, Boston MA, Los Angeles, Southampton UK, Sydney AU.

Music Cruises 2023-2024 schedule

Most of the following voyages are themed on Classic, Folk, Country, Rock, or Jazz music.

Note: In the following table, all links are internal (CruiseMapper) redirecting to the ship’s itinerary schedule where you can compare dates and prices per person (double occupancy rates).

Mardi Gras carnival cruises

Mardi Gras cruises are music and dance-themed voyages with itineraries that visit the US port cities  New Orleans Louisiana ,  Galveston Texas ,  Tampa Florida ,  Long Beach (Los Angeles) California ,  NYC New York ,  Mobile Alabama , and of course,  Rio De Janeiro Brazil .

Mardi Gras Carnival

The Mardi Gras carnival aka "Carnival season" (the name literally means "Fat Tuesday" in French) is a Catholic festival celebrated in the countries of Anglican nations. The celebrations start on Epiphany (or "the feast day" on January 6th) and culminate on the day before Ash Wednesday (called "Fat Tuesday" and "Mardi Gras Day" - positioned exactly 46 days before Easter).

When is the Mardi Gras carnival day?

Because day's timing is set according to Easter, it varies by year - between February 3 and March 9. Follows a list with the Mardi Gras dates in the next couple of years (all dates will be on Tuesdays, though  - no matter the year).

Carnival Mardi Gras - CruiseMapper

The Mardi Gras dates are:

  • in 2020 on February 25
  • in 2021 on February 16
  • in 2022 on March 1
  • in 2023 on February 21
  • in 2024 on February 13
  • in 2025 on March 4
  • in 2026 on February 17
  • in 2027 on February 9

To find your "Mardi Gras cruise ship", just pick departure port ( New Orleans ,  Galveston ,  Tampa ,  Los Angeles ,  New York ,  Mobile , Rio De Janeiro ). In the port's schedule, you'll find listed ships leaving from or going to that seaport. Then choose itineraries that include the year's carnival day.

Mardi Gras New Orleans is second only to the "Rio Carnival" in Brazil. According to Wikipedia, the Rio Carnival draws record numbers of day tourists to Brazil - 2,2 million for the Carnival Day in 2012. Add to this more than 5 million people for the whole week (around 70% of all annual guests to Rio De Janeiro), with over 400,000 foreigners participating in the week-long day and night music and dancing, and boozing.

Mardi Gras cruising experiences

In 2017, the UK-based  Fred Olsen Cruise Line offered the company's first-ever Mardi Gras cruise as part of an epic travel adventure to ports in the Caribbean, North and Central America leaving roundtrip from the UK.

  • From Southampton England, Fred Olsen’s ship  MS Balmoral  offered in February 2017 a 46-night itinerary as an adults-only cruise visiting 18 ports of call and featuring 3 full days and 2 overnights in NOLA ( New Orleans ) allowing plenty of time to enjoy the carnival atmosphere.
  • This unique  themed cruise (46-night itinerary, code L1703, the theme "Central America and the Mardi Gras" left Southampton on February 4, 2017. Prices started from GBP 3450 pp (based on double-occupancy twin-bed Superior Interior cabin). Pricing included accommodation, all onboard meals, and entertainment, plus port taxes.
  • The list of cruise ports of call included: Southampton – Funchal Madeira – Bridgetown Barbados – Castries St. Lucia – St John’s Antigua – Road Town Tortola BVI – Falmouth Jamaica – Trujillo Honduras – Belize City – Cozumel Mexico – New Orleans LA (2-nights) – Tampa FL – Key West FL – Miami FL – Port Canaveral FL – Jacksonville FL – Charleston SC – Hamilton Bermuda – Ponta Delgada Azores – Southampton.
  • The 2-night stay in NOLA allowed cruise tourists to enjoy the festivities at this fabulously extravagant festival. Passengers were also provided with the opportunity to attend the "Orpheuscapade Black Tie Ball" in New Orleans – something rarely experienced by tourists. This formal event was held in the city's Convention Centre, featuring live music, dancing, and the chance to get up close to the gigantic carnival floats, as a local celebrity leads the parade directly through the Centre.

4 of the best classical music cruises in 2020

Music festivals - there's a thing. Whilst we oldies might just remember Woodstock back in 1969 and be aware that Glastonbury dates back to 1970 (attendance 1,500), nothing could have prepared us for the glorious range of choices and themes that make up the current festival scene.

Unsurprising, then, that this should have extended on to ships, and if there is a particular range of artistes or musical genres that particularly appeals to you, just take a look - you will probably find something perfect. The one area of interest that is not particularly well served is that of classical music, so we have chosen our four favourite classical music cruises in 2020 for an extra-special enhancement to your holiday.

Silversea Opera Voyage with the Accademia Teatro alla Scala

Silver Spirit sails from Barcelona to Athens on 17th October 2020, operating a beautiful itinerary featuring the lovely Mediterranean islands of Menorca, Sardinia, Sicily, Malta, Mykonos and Santorini. The voyage includes an exclusive opera performance, the opportunity to meet the artists, discussions and lectures with an expert on the music and lyrics of the recital programme, and themed shore excursions to renowned theatres.

Silversea - Teatro alla Scala opera cruise

Ponant's Piano Festival at Sea

Without doubt the most comprehensive range of music cruises comes from the chic boutique French cruise line Ponant, which bring together music lovers and performers around a shared passion. The guests of honour are renowned artists, talented performers and brilliant virtuosos. There are many to choose from, but our favourite is the 5th Piano Festival at Sea, departing on 18th April 2020 and sailing from Dakar to Lisbon on Le Durmont d'Urville. Your fellow guests will be serious classical music aficionados, and the highlight of each day is the extraordinary evening concert, with its exceptional musical line-up.

Ponant - Le Dumont d'Urville

Cunard Transatlantic Music Week

Cunard's unique event cruises are not to be missed, and usually take place on the transatlantic voyage to give you plenty of time to enjoy every minute. We particularly like the look of the Transatlantic Music Week departing 23rd October 2020 on board the one-of-a-kind Queen Mary 2. If a transatlantic voyage has always been on your to-do list, this is a great incentive to actually go ahead and book. Why not make a real trip of it and book a couple of concerts in New York before flying home?

Cunard - Show in Royal Court Theatre

European Waterways

For opera lovers, a special Opera Cruise aboard La Bella Vita, a unique and intimate 20-guest barge, is a perfect choice. Before your cruise from Venice to Mantua begins, you travel to Verona to visit the fascinating Arena Muse Opera, a wonderful museum devoted to the history of opera, followed by a performance of Verdi's Nabucco in the magnificent setting of the Roman amphitheatre, the Arena di Verona.

Arena di Verona opera

Spend the night in Verona before joining La Bella Vita in Venice the following day. During the cruise there are visits to some wonderful baroque theatres, such as the Gran Teatro La Fenice, where the premières of operas by composers such as Rossini and Verdi were performed, and the intimate Teatro Bibiena in Mantua, with its bell-shaped interior that opened with a concert by a 13-year-old Mozart in 1770. Don't miss this departure on 15th August 2020.

Our methodology

To be included on this list, each cruise must be centered around music, obviously. And when we say "music," we're not talking about a small acapella group singing in the atrium or a pianist accompanying the dinner rush. We're looking at big-scale, well-organized, fabulous shows featuring acts so good you may get goosebumps. Whether they sing like angels or play a mean guitar, the musicians on these cruises will make your journey one you'll likely wish to repeat.

We consulted a ton of online reviews to ensure the cruises we mention on this list will live up to the hype. In addition to boasting talented performers, we searched for ships that were loaded with fun amenities, good concert venues, great food, and interesting ports of call. There's little worse than being stuck on a boat with nowhere to go, nothing to do, and nothing decent to munch on. That's why we made sure to do a deep dive, researching each cruise company to ensure they would fit the proverbial bill.

We also contacted music cruise organizers like Sixthman and StarVista LIVE to enquire about future dates. They told us that next year's cruise dates are announced during the current cruise, so there are no definitive dates until that time. They did, however, mention that the following year's cruises should take place around the same time. Be sure to check each cruise's website and book early — they fill up super quickly.

Classical Music All-Female Aboard MS Europa

On March 8, 2024, in celebration of International Women’s Day, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises announced that its renowned Ocean Sun Festival classical music event aboard the MS Europa will feature exclusively female artists.

During its week-long Baltic Sea cruise from September 5 to September 14, 2024, the small but luxurious MS Europa will depart from Stockholm’s old town, with the finest classical music taking center stage on this musical journey, performed by exceptional classical artists.

Leading the lineup will be the outstanding cellist Raphaela Gromes , who will kick off the exclusive onshore concert at the Queen Silvia Concert Hall, accompanied by the Swedish Chamber Orchestra.

Throughout the cruise, artists such as Raphaela Gromes , soprano Juliane Banse , and pianist Alexandra Dariescu will be aboard for the classical music festival, delighting fortunate guests with their performances. The program notably includes works by female composers or traditionally male-performed pieces interpreted from a female perspective.

For years now, the MS Europa has been an integral part of classical music festival calendars, and the Ocean Sun Festival hosted aboard is considered a must for genre enthusiasts. Onboard, amidst a unique and intimate atmosphere, the crème de la crème of classical music talent converges.

This year, the Ocean Sun Festival celebrates its 15th anniversary, honoring the virtuosity and elegance of exceptional female talents in classical music, both in composition and performance. The MS Europa transforms into a floating concert hall, and amid the intimate onboard atmosphere, its 400 passengers will have the privilege of getting to know the artists.

Gabi Haupt, Senior Advisor Luxury Cruises at Hapag-Lloyd Cruises , describes what the ship represents: “ For decades, the MS Europa has proudly been considered a pioneering ocean liner. It is now the sixth generation representing the ability to boldly break traditions and establish new ones, traveling the world exploring distant shores and connecting people. Our Europa is an icon with a strong soul .”

The Artists and Their Musical Journey Aboard Europa

Guests will embark in Stockholm at the beginning of August, and exclusively for them, the Ocean Sun Festival will commence with an opening concert at the Queen Silvia Concert Hall in the city, an innovative space for musical encounters designed by architect Giorgio Palù and opened only in 2022.

Featuring works by composers like Marie Jaell, Raphaela Gromes, who discovered the cello at the age of four and took to the stage for the first time at seven, will perform here alongside the Swedish Chamber Orchestra. The artist has received numerous awards, including the Opus Klassic in 2020. Raphaela Gromes will also make another appearance onboard, in a trio concert with Julian Riem and Ye-Eun Choi.

The MS Europa will begin its journey and head towards Tallinn in Estonia, followed by Visby and Kalmar in Sweden, with stops also in Gdansk in Poland and Copenhagen in Denmark, offering a direct view of the city’s famous symbol, the Little Mermaid, before continuing through the Kiel Canal to conclude the journey in Hamburg.

During this voyage, soprano Juliane Banse will present her interpretation of Schubert’s “Winter Journey,” a piece traditionally performed by male artists. Through her ballet training, Juliane Banse merges dance and singing into a unique performance. The ensemble is complemented by dancer István Simon and pianist Alexander Krichel.

Juliane Banse’s extensive operatic repertoire is complemented by her experience in concerts, song evenings, and classical music. Her internationally recognized career has recently taken her to the United States, where she performed at the MET in New York, interpreting Zdenka in Strauss’s “Arabella.” Many of her musical recordings have been awarded, including the prestigious Echo Klassik award.

Pianist Alexandra Dariescu will enchant guests onboard with an evening of piano, where the artist will rediscover and reinterpret works by various female composers, as well as pieces like those by Chopin. Her commitment to the recognition and rights of women is a common thread through her artistic creation, giving voice to previously forgotten female composers.

She recently premiered piano concertos by artists such as Nadia Boulanger, Florence Price, and Dora Pejačević in the United States and the United Kingdom, as well as in Norway and Finland, alongside renowned orchestras such as the Oslo Philharmonic, the Houston Symphony, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Her global career has brought her to concert stages with major ensembles, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestre National de France.

A Female Heart Beats Aboard the MS Europa

The challenging program of the Ocean Sun Festival has been curated this year, as in previous years, by Susanna Kitzl , artistic director of Hapag-Lloyd Cruises . “ My heart belongs to classical music. I myself have my professional roots in opera, so I am interested in promoting women’s creativity in the field of classical music. It is very moving for me to see that this year, together with these wonderful artists, we will set an example and have a strong bond with the MS Europa .”

Traditionally, seafaring is a male profession, but women consistently and confidently affirm their place in the world’s oceans: it’s no wonder a ship is attributed a female name representing strength and protection.

Hapag Lloyd Europa

Hapag Lloyd Europa

Strong women have long shaped Europe, both onboard and ashore. For almost 20 years, Gabi Haupt has led the management of the brand with feminine sensitivity and thus the skill and development of Europa. Numerous strong colleagues work with experience and passion in crucial roles onboard, and among the guests, there are also numerous energetic female companions who bring the MS Europa to life.

This year, Gabi Haupt passes the scepter into the hands of the next female generation and, as Senior Advisor Luxury, passes on her knowledge to Lisa Wilken , Head of Luxury Cruises. Together with well-established colleagues both on land and at sea, each team member plays a crucial role in carrying the strong soul of Europa across the oceans of the world.

One of the oldest hotels in Hong Kong is the definition of luxury. 13 photos offer a glimpse inside Art Basel's hotel partner, The Peninsula.

  • The Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong, an iconic property that opened in 1928, offers a luxury experience.
  • The hotel boasts nine restaurants, a spa, a mall featuring high-end brands, and over 50 suites.
  • The Peninsula also offers unique experiences like the Art in Resonance program and a helicopter pad used by celebrities.

Insider Today

Steps away from the glistening Victoria Harbour sits the Peninsula Hotel.

The flagship hotel in the Peninsula Hotels group, which boasts properties worldwide, opened in December 1928, making it one of the oldest hotels in Hong Kong. The original building only housed six floors and was the tallest building in the city when it was built.

Now, the hotel has a 30-story tower, more than 50 hotel suites, nine restaurants and lounges, a spa, and what they call a "shopping arcade," or an intimate mall featuring Chanel, Harry Winston, and other luxury brands.

The iconic hotel, one of the official hotel partners of Art Basel Hong Kong , sponsored by the global lead partner UBS, is nestled right on the Kowloon Peninsula in Tsim Sha Tsui. Thanks to their Art in Resonance program, it's also home to four memorable art pieces featuring "emerging and mid-career" artists. I toured the 5-star hotel and saw exactly why the Peninsula provides the best in hospitality and accommodations, from the hotel's helicopter pad, which has welcomed Bon Jovi and Tom Cruise, to the gym that Madonna specially requested be outfitted in the hotel's biggest suite.

When you first walk up to the hotel, you're greeted by an art installation in the hotel's signature green.

cruise lines with classical music

Kingsley Ng, a visual artist based in Hong Kong, was the creator behind the art installation affixed to the hotel's exterior. During Art Basel, "Esmerelda," as it's titled, was unveiled revealing a sky-high art moment that mimics water waves.

You're also greeted by a fleet of Rolls-Royce cars.

cruise lines with classical music

Before you enter the hotel, guests know they'll be treated to a luxury experience thanks to the Rolls-Royce fleet parked outside. The hotel has 14 Rolls-Royce Extended Wheelbase Phantoms on hand for guests to use.

Every car is in the hotel's signature green with a peanut butter leather and wood paneling interior.

The cars are facing two stone Chinese lions, placed outside the hotel for protection, according to Kylie Cheung, the hotel's assistant director of communications.

There's also a vintage Rolls-Royce tucked away in the hotel's basement.

cruise lines with classical music

Housed in the garage is the hotel's most precious member of the fleet, a 1934 Rolls-Royce Phantom II , a tailor-made car that belongs to the Kadoorie family. The family owns the Peninsula Hotel Group along with China Light and Power, an electricity company servicing most of Hong Kong.

The car, built in antique fashion, is preserved beautifully. I got a chance to sit inside the car, to feel the buttered leather under my hands. There's even a rotary telephone inside the vehicle, a call back to an earlier time before cellular phones and devices.

The hotel lobby is lavish. It features tall white columns with 76 hand-painted gargoyles on top.

cruise lines with classical music

Walking inside the hotel, you're met with two sides, both for dining.

The hotel's communications director told Business Insider that the middle of the lobby was previously used as a dance floor and that men and women would sit separately on two sides "so as not to cause embarrassment."

Today, the lobby is the place for the hotel's famous afternoon tea , held from 2-6 p.m. local time for a minimum cost of $350 Hong Kong dollars, or around $44. The all-day menu features an assortment of salads, pastas, sandwiches, and what they call "Asian specialties."

The lobby also houses an art installation by French artist Elise Morin. The art dune-shaped piece, titled "SOLI," comprises broken CDs, a nod to the piece's sustainable message.

The 300-room hotel has over 50 suites, including its finest, the Presidential Suite.

cruise lines with classical music

BI toured two of the hotel's suites, including the 4,000-square-foot Presidential Suite that's welcomed presidents, billionaires, and business leaders, according to Cheung.

The room, number 2608, is the picture of opulence thanks to marble floors, an executive dining table, a piano, and custom-made furniture.

Walking in, you're greeted by artwork, a 2011 wooden sculpture by Sun Yi titled "Dancer II." To the left is a media room where guests can relax and enjoy a movie.

If you'd rather look at the Harbour, floor-to-ceiling windows and a terrace offer the perfect unobstructed view.

A gym, specially requested by Madonna, sits in one of the suite's rooms.

cruise lines with classical music

As you move through the suite's dining room, if you walk too fast, you might miss the hidden full-sized kitchen, which features Miele appliances, a wine fridge, and an espresso machine .

Along with a bedroom comes a his-and-hers closet and bathroom. There's also a gym, the brainchild of Madonna. Yes, that Madonna.

When she stayed at The Peninsula, she didn't want to go downstairs to the gym, Cheung told BI, with the other hotel guests, and requested a gym be built inside the suite for her. It's stayed there ever since.

The cost for the entire suite? A mere $234,000 HKD or around $29,900 per night.

A smaller suite, costing about $2,000 per night, includes a spacious vanity area and closet.

cruise lines with classical music

If that price tag gave you a bit of sticker shock, don't worry. There are plenty of smaller, more affordable suites that aren't as grandiose as the Presidential Suite but are elegant all the same.

One of the smaller suites I saw included a dining room table, a living room with a faux fireplace, and a sitting area in the bedroom, along with a roomy closet and vanity area. The room even came with a nail dryer in case you need an impromptu manicure.

Outside The Verandah, a buffet-style restaurant, sits another art installation.

cruise lines with classical music

Lachlan Turczan, a native of Los Angeles, created one of my favorite art pieces with his water sculpture titled "Harmonic Resonance."

This kinetic sculpture moves water , thanks to submersible low-frequency vibrations.

When staring at the drum, I felt a sense of calm, feeling the remnants of the vibration through my feet. Looking at the sculpture reminded me that every cause has an effect.

A tucked-away music room also serves as the hotel's archive.

cruise lines with classical music

With such a history, the Peninsula Hotel also houses an archive of its achievements. It also serves as a soundproof room for the many musicians who've stayed at the hotel.

The hotel houses nine restaurants and lounges, featuring different cuisines.

cruise lines with classical music

Dining is one of the best aspects of staying at the Peninsula Hotel. The hotel boasts nine restaurants and lounges with two restaurants earning a Michelin star.

A Swiss chalet inspired Chesa, a manager told Business Insider. In fact, the entire interior of the restaurants was flown in from Switzerland.

There's also Spring Moon, which has earned a Michelin star and features Cantonese on its menu, a Japanese-inspired restaurant named Imasa, and Felix, which boasts "Contemporary European" cuisine, according to the hotel's website.

There are also two lounges, The Bar, and The Lobby, which I previously mentioned, and The Peninsula Boutique & Café that serves coffees and delicate pastries.

There's a reason Gaddi's has a Michelin star.

cruise lines with classical music

Business Insider tried a six-course meal at the French restaurant Gaddi's, led by Chef Albin Gobil. He recently earned a Michelin star, and it's easy to see why.

He's clearly a thoughtful artist who doesn't skip any detail regarding presentation. He also served a foie gras that was my best this year.

The experience is complemented by a dining room featuring chandeliers and textiles from the Ming dynasty, part of the private Kadoori family collection.

While shopping in the arcade, don't miss Saya Woolfalk's art installation.

cruise lines with classical music

It's a "visionary reality portal," according to on-site materials, created by two kaleidoscope videos, 3D animation, live action, and hand-painted paper. The installation is meant to mimic the stained glass of churches.

Guests can skip Hong Kong traffic by landing at the hotel's private helipad.

cruise lines with classical music

Before walking out to the hotel's helipad, guests are treated to a small museum documenting the history of the China Clipper. The first plane, which could only go up about 10,000 feet in the air, lasted 10 years starting in 1935.

It's an area used for private dining and for going over safety precautions for anyone about to board the hotel's helicopter. And a few famous faces, including Tom Cruise and Bon Jovi, have walked this corridor since a helicopter is only an 18-minute ride from the city's airport, operator Paul Leigh, who's worked at the hotel for 30 years in various capacities, told Business Insider.

For any Batman fans, you might recognize the helipad from a 10-second shot in Christopher Nolan's 2008 film, "The Dark Knight," starring Christian Bale as the Caped Crusader and the late Heath Ledger as Joker.

Today, the hotel's helicopter is also used for many proposals. Leigh told BI he's never seen anyone say no to a proposal in the sky.

Classical Music Currently

With all the confusion about dropping or modifying Lincoln Center performances, what’s the classical music situation currently aboard the various ships?

Thanks for any updates.

On our April Volendam cruise, a piano and cello due played several times daily.

On the Westerdam, the excellent Lincoln Center group (who played to mostly full rooms) left the ship on April 8 (the end of their contract).  From that moment, until we left the ship in early May, the Lincoln Center Stage remained completely dark.  There was no indication (onboard) if and when there would ever be some kind of replacement.

Thanks

Eurodam May 20th had no classical music. There was a wonderful jazz trio that played in Ocean Bar, loved them and probably sat through 7 sets over the week. Dance floor was used by couples, several for ballroom dancing. Music ranged from standards to Stevie Wonder, etc. really good play list.

We also did not find any classical music on the Koningsdam in April, but there was a good amount of high quality live jazz music that we found quite enjoyable. There was some solo jazz piano, focused on older pieces too.

No Classical Music on the Rotterdam for our May 20 cruise.     I complained and they basically told me to piss off.

Then I asked them,   don't you think it's odd to name your decks after classical music composers when there's no classical music onboard?

Now that is ironic, isn't it??? If you haven't done your post-cruise survey yet, you have to include this comment!

I'm glad to hear jazz is coming back--I always loved the combo in Ocean Bar. But that doesn't replace classical; it's another option.

This unique table near the computers on the Zaandam had one of the only classical instruments I saw(none were heard)during two recent weeks onboard. Ironically seeing again on this cruise Sydney, Nova Scotia's most iconic symbol was just another reminder.

This is super-disappointing since listening to the classical trio after dinner was one of the highlights of my last HAL cruise, though some decent live jazz could've almost made up the difference. I'll also miss the YumYum man. These were two unique attributes that set HAL apart from other lines for me, and they're one of the reasons I chose HAL for my SO's  introduction to cruising. I'm nervous now, and hoping I haven't over-sold the experience to him.

I'm sure we'll have a great trip, but I really sold it as "a step back to a more elegant time."

So the only music options were the three on Music Walk?

What was in the main showroom?

The World Stage had two different shows by the Step One Dance Company. Those were outstanding! There were also at least two shows listed only as "Four Vocalists" on the schedule for World Stage, but I didn't catch those.

The three Music Walk venues had three shows each on most days.

A standup comedian also did one show at the BB King Blues Club and another at the World Stage.  I never saw any live music anywhere during the day.

Thanks. That's pretty thin for someone who doesn't like the loud offerings on Music Walk. Step One are good, but I've seen their shows more than once. "Four Vocalists" makes me wonder if HAL dropped Cantare and hired a generic group instead.

One of the Step One Shows was "Humanity" which is brand new. The other was "Move" which I think is also pretty new.

Yeah, if the Music Walk venues are too loud for you, there's not much for entertainment.  I saw a brief video clip of the Four Vocalists show and it appeared to be just four people on stage singing Karaoke style. I don't think I missed much.

I think I've seen "Humanity." "Move" doesn't sound familiar. There's one where they dance to various musical instruments that's quite clever, except for the mistake with Rhapsody in Blue. I forget what instrument they were highlighting as they music played the iconic glissando beginning, but it wasn't a clarinet. Tsk.

Karaoke style? Words fail me.

RMLincoln

One Step’s Humanity has been around for years. It still good but it’s not new.

We were told that the contract HAL had with Lincoln Center was expensive.  LC arranged, advertised and auditioned. The positions were in demand. The musicians were quite good!  They’ll be missed!

Very sad, and one of the things we really enjoyed about HAL was their live classical music.  Here is what HAL said about this back in January 2023:

Holland America Line is elevating its partnership with Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and taking those shows to the main stage. The program will evolve from a quartet on several ships to a traveling ensemble that will perform on a rotating basis in World Stages on all ships. World Stage is Holland America Line’s main theater; on Pinnacle Class ships the venue seats more than 700 guests and features a two-story, panoramic LED screen.

Holland America Line is excited to be working with Shanta Thake, Lincoln Center’s chief artistic officer, on the new vision for this program, which is still under development and will roll out this summer. The musicians who will be a part of this new program remain the highest caliber of talent and will be exhilarating to watch in the larger venue.

I don't know if this will happen or not, but if it does, it sounds like it will only be on one ship at a time, like Cantare.

How many years ago was Cantare announced? I have yet to be on a cruise where they performed. I fear that will be my luck with Lincoln Center, too.

Cantaré is still on the ships (i think the poster above just couldn't remember their name). We were fortunate enough to see them on the Panama Cruise repositioning cruise on the Volendam. They did three different shows and a meet and greet talk. Loved their personalities! They talked about the hiring, practice, and contract processes. We also had the classical duet who performed most days a few sets in the Explorations Lounge. The performances were attended well, for the most part. One in particular was a very full house. I am so sad to hear that they have been replaced by jazz. Not my cup of tea, to be sure.

rajkr74

On the Zuiderdam now and were told HAL is revamping the Lincoln Center group, going to the World Stage and increasing the players  to 5. When....not known yet.

Cantrell was also on board for 3-4 shows and is headed to the Osterdam.  Will be back on the Zuiderdam on 6-12-23.  We enjoyed  them, good singers.

Perhaps a bit of a stretch here. The large instrument in Sydney is a "Fiddle" as in down home music. Think Natalie McMaster and Leahy. Funny how a violin can be different things to different people.

OlsSalt

Chamber music is intended to be played in an intimate chamber setting. Please dear God, do not mike these few players on the Main Stage, like you do for the BBC productions when at least they are supposed to serve only as background music while snakes are devouring baby chicks.

File this classical chamber music change of venue under ..What Were They Thinking???" (Again). Appreciate their attempts to be responsive; but being tone-deaf at the same time makes this a net wash.

No stretch at all. The instruments are one in the same and only the setting in which they are used changes the name. In fact I use neither term in my description of the instruments.
