Tour de France sunglasses: Who's wearing what and where can I get them?

You might not have Pogacar's power but you can have Sagan's sunglasses

If you've been watching this year's Tour de France , you've probably spotted some new eyewear. The Tour de France is a hotbed of new tech, and even with its new position in the calendar, 2020 is no different. Whether it's yet another colourway for Peter Sagan , diamond-encrusted specs for Alexander Kristoff or the seemingly upside-down frames of Marc Hirschi's sunglasses, the race for the best cycling glasses is hotting up. 

With the launch of new options from 100%, Koo, Scicon, and a host of new colourways from Oakley, we've decided to round up some of the biggest names from this year's race and overview their choice of eyewear. Then rather than just leave you salivating at spendy sunnies, we've even given you an idea on where to buy them, so that you too can look pro - even if like us, you go slow. 

Of course, most professional cyclists have sponsorship responsibilities via their team. Ineos Grenadiers are sponsored by Oakley and Jumbo-Visma by Agu, for example, but within the constraints of the brand, riders will ultimately have a choice of model it's, for this reason, you'll often see Geraint Thomas (who's not at this race, of course) wearing the old-school style Oakley Racing Jackets next to Egan Bernal 's ultra-modern-looking Oakley Sutro. 

So without further ado, let's dive in to who's wearing what. 

Peter Sagan

A sunglasses roundup wouldn't be complete without Peter Sagan's inclusion. Luckily though, we're not going to point you in the direction of his podium antics sporting skiing goggles – thank heavens that never caught on! 

As we <a href="https://www.cyclingnews.com/news/peter-sagan-to-debut-limited-edition-100-sunglasses-at-the-tour-de-france" data-link-merchant="cyclingnews.com""> announced prior to the grand depart in Nice, Sagan's personal sponsor – and his Bora Hansgrohe team's sponsor – 100% released a brand new Sagan Collection of its eyewear range. The 2021 Sagan collection is one of many collections from 100% that have borne the Slovakian's name over the years, and this edition's design is predominantly white with hints of gold. 

While the three-time world champion has a choice of the brand's S3, S2 and Speedcraft models, he's most often seen wearing the S3. Given they're a brand new collection, it's perhaps unsurprising that they're currently only available directly from 100%.

However, if white and gold isn't your style, there are plenty more colours to choose from. 

Egan Bernal

On recent evidence, Egan Bernal is a rider who takes eyewear fashion seriously. His Ineos Grenadiers team is sponsored by Oakley, so he has the full range of Oakley Cycling Sunglasses at his disposal, and judging by the variety he's worn, his collection is probably only bested by <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CAQBifiAnmi/?hl=en" data-link-merchant="instagram.com"" target="_blank"> Mark Cavendish . 

The coolest pair he's been spotted in, in this writer's humble opinion, are the Concept Studio collection Sutro Origins. Of course, you mightn't be too fussy on the colour choice, if that's you, there are plenty of retailers selling Oakley Sutro and Oakley Sutro Origin sunglasses. 

Thibaut Pinot

The Frenchman might have fallen out GC contention, but he's not fallen out of the hearts and minds of cycling fans the world over. One of the coolest riders in the peloton, Pinot's Groupama-FDJ team are another sponsored by Oakley, and he tends to use the more traditional design of the Oakley Radar EV sunglasses. This year, he's been sporting <a href="https://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-100134082-14535146?sid=hawk-custom-tracking&url=https://www.oakley.com/en-us/collections/kokoro-collection-feat-meguru" data-link-merchant="oakley.com"">Oakley's Kokoro collection, designed by Meguru Yamaguchi.

Mads Pedersen

As the reigning world champion, we couldn't leave Pedersen out of this list and by a fortunate coincidence, it just so happens that he's sporting some new sunglasses from his team's sponsor Koo. In the lead up to the race, Koo launched two new pairs, the Spectro and the Demos.

Tadej Pogacar

Pogacar's UAE Team Emirates is sponsored by Scicon, but he's not sporting the <a href="https://www.cyclingnews.com/news/alexander-kristoff-wears-gold-plated-diamond-encrusted-scicon-sunglasses-worth-euro5000-on-tour-de-france-podium/" data-link-merchant="cyclingnews.com"">€5,000 diamond-encrusted sunglasses that his teammate Kristoff wore on the podium after day one. Instead, he's been flitting between both of Scicon's new pairs of sunglasses. For the most part, he's been seen in the Aerowing, but for his win on Stage 9, he'd switched it out to the Aeroshade with a clear lens.

Wout Van Aert and Primoz Roglic

The Jumbo-Visma team are sponsored by Dutch brand, Agu - the same company behind Fast Forward wheels. While Van Aert and Roglič have both been on the podium using the <a href="https://agu.com/eu/podium-glasses-team-jumbo-visma" data-link-merchant="agu.com"">Agu Podium glasses, on the road, they've also both been spotted using a sunglasses that are yet to be released by Agu.

Over the past few Tours de France, there has been an ongoing race to maximise the sunglasses to face ratio. This has been made even more apparent with the introduction of mandatory post-race face masks and now at the start- and finish-lines, riders' identities are almost unfathomable due to their hidden faces. Adam Yates is currently leading the big-glasses-small-face race, and he's doing it with a pair of Scott Shields. 

There's nothing custom or special about the Briton's specs, so they should be available in abundance. Marc Hirschi

Saving the best for last, 22-year-old Marc Hirschi has won the hearts of fans all over the world with his 2nd place on stage 2, his daring breakaway on stage 9 before he was pipped to the line by Pogačar and Roglič, and third time lucky, a win on Stage 12. 

His Sunweb team is sponsored by Roka and, from its range, Hirschi has been using the quirky-looking Matador sunglasses, which differ in that the arms are affixed to the lower portion of the lens, rather than the top.

Oakley releases four pairs of Tour de France 2022 special edition glasses

Oakley often get involved with the Tour de France hype, and this year is no different, with four special edition sets launched. The collection, which features best-selling styles including Oakley Kato, Jawbreaker, Sutro Lite and Holbrook, is said to have been inspired by the Tour de France trophy. Which ones are your favourite?

Oakley Kato (£265)

The Kato is the most expensive of the bunch and features the futuristic looks that people either love or hate. Oakley says the Kato is “engineered to push the boundaries of performance with a purpose-built design that conforms to the contours of the face”. These feature the innovative tilt function and come with multiple nose pads to fit more faces. You can read all about them here . 

Oakley Jawbreaker (£212)

The iconic Jawbreakers have also received the TdF treatment. These are more subtle than the previous year's special editions with a clear frame, yellow accents and Prizm black lens. Oakley says the Jawbreaker “is the ultimate sport design for cycling” featuring “Switchlock Technology for easy lens changing and temples that adjust to three different lengths for helmet compatibility”.

Oakley Sutro Lite (£172)

If you’re after something with huge coverage, then the Sutro Lite might be for you. This semi-rimless version of the popular Sutro is said to be “Inspired by the daily life of urban cyclists” with a high-wrap shield creating a “bold, versatile look that protects from the elements”

Oakley Holbrook (£145)

If you’re looking for something more casual or for off the bike, then the Holbrook is “a timeless, classic design fused with modern Oakley technology”. These are supposedly inspired by the screen heroes from the 1940s, 50s and 60s and are accented by metal rivets and Oakley logos.

2023 Tour de France Sunglasses Brands and Models Guide

Sunglasses are a big part of modern-day cycling, and there is no bigger race than the Tour de France for cycling sunglasses brands to show off their latest designs. While some brands, such as Oakley and 100 Percent are easily recognizable, many other lesser-known brands exist, especially for those outside of Europe.

The riders are usually given a choice of models and designs depending on factors such as if they’re in one of the leaders’ jerseys, weather conditions, or just personal preference.

In 2023, there will be 12 sunglasses brands represented at the Tour de France. Oakley (four teams), Ekoi (four teams), and 100 Percent (four teams) have the biggest presence, followed by Scicon (two teams).

All the cycling sunglasses worn at the Tour de France are often available for cycling fans. Depending on the brand, they can cost anywhere from $100 to $400.

Orders placed before 12pm Monday to Thursday will be shipped the same day for next day delivery. Orders placed after 12pm Thursday and onwards will be shipped on Monday.

• REVOLUTIONARY LENS DESIGN - Thanks to innovations in the field of lens design, we have designed the lens of this model with a more accentuated wraparound shape and we have made it more rigid in some areas, to recall the structural properties of a mount.

• ADJUSTABLE INCLINATION - To better adapt to all types of face, an innovative mechanism allows you to tilt the lens as desired, adjusting the contact points on the nose and cheeks.

• NOSE PADS - The model is accompanied by three pairs of Unobtainium® nosepads of different thicknesses and depths, to always get the best fit and non-slip grip you need.

Oakley unveils limited-edition 2023 Tour de France sunglasses collection

New shades inspired by the iconic race

Oakley has launched four pairs of limited-edition sunglasses to mark the 2023 Tour de France, which starts in Bilbao, Spain on 1 July.

The new collection consists of limited editions of the Encoder , Radar EV, Sutro Lite and Sylas models.

As the official cycling sunglasses sponsor, Oakley releases an annual collection, which sees its designs launched in new colours to commemorate the Tour de France .

Unlike 2021 and 2022’s more muted designs, yellow is fully back on the menu for 2023.

This year’s collection takes inspiration from the yellow jersey. Oakley is using its brand new ‘speed splatter paint technique’. The brand says the technique was designed to give each frame “an impression of speed, direction and movement to represent the riders competing”.

All of the glasses feature the Tour logo laser etched into the bottom right-hand corner of the lens and come with a custom microbag to store them in.

Oakley 2023 Tour de France Encoder Strike

The Encoder Strike glasses make quite the statement. The frameless wraparound design is paired with a line of vents at the top of the lens to accentuate air flow.

The Prizm road lens is bonded to the frame, made from the brand’s O-matter material to provide strength, comfort and durability.

Oakley 2023 Tour de France Sutro Lite Sweep

The Sutro Lite blends the brand’s popular Sutro frame design with vented lenses for increased airflow. The limited-edition frame is paired with a Prizm Road lens.
