Or, it can mean weaving through the snow-dusted tops of the Rocky Mountains. It’s for all those reasons and more that Cruise America RV rentals are such a popular option for travelers…

In fact, an RV rental could be precisely what you need to take that American odyssey to the next level. Not only do these wheel-spinning rides promise to get you out and about in the great outdoors. They also offer you the chance to take all those prized creature comforts with you. How? Well, Cruise America fields a whole host of possible autos. They start with small-scale vans for the no-frills freedom seeker and go all the way to fully-fledged motorhomes. The latter throw in extras like gas cooktops, refrigerators, showers, and electrical generators. It’s like cruising with a hotel in tow!

So, if you find yourself searching for that dream Cruise America RV or sifting through Cruise America reviews, be sure to read on. This guide has useful info and titbits that can help you plan the perfect RV rental. What exactly is Cruise America?

Cruise America is one of the leading providers of RV rentals in the United States. Since opening in 1972, it’s been offering adventurers the chance to lease large-scale motorhomes and smaller travel trucks to live the American dream of cruising through cities, states and wonderful landscapes. It’s now an employee-owned enterprise that trades publicly.

Where can I get an RV rental from Cruise America?

There are hundreds of locations where you can pick up a Cruise America RV rental in the United States. From East Coast to West Coast, the Arizonan deserts to the redwoods of the Pacific Northwest, your ride can be waiting for you pretty much wherever you want. That’s thanks to a whopping 132 outlets across the continent (yep, it’s possible to find Cruise America in Canada, too). Some offices are found in town centers, others in industrial parks on the outskirts of major cities. Those near big airports are often linked directly to the terminals by shuttle bus.

What types of RV rental does Cruise America offer?

In a world dominated by assisted braking, eco fuel pumps, and diesel-infused engine valves, Cruise America has opted to keep things simple with its range of rental options. Would-be drivers have just four packages to choose from. Each has its own price point, pros, and cons, and is aimed at a different type of traveler. Let’s take a look at each, beginning with the smallest…

Truck Camper rental

Starting the ball rolling is the Truck Camper Rental . This is the smallest of the bunch. You can expect more of a glorified roadster than a motorhome. The engine room of this bad boy is an F-150 Ford with a five-liter V8 under the hood. You get all the bonuses of power steering and cruise control, along with an AUX-input sound system that’s great for playing The Eagles on repeat on any long-haul drives through Cali. Of course, the main limitation of this is the size. Inside, it’s compact with room for a small seating area, a double bed, and a small kitchenette.

Compact RV rental

The next size of RV rental on the menu with Cruise America is the compact. Small but not too small, this one’s interior boasts extra prep space in the kitchen, two seats up front, and a partitioned dining area. Said dining spaces transform neatly into one double bed come evening, while a lofted section above the driving cab also comes with space for a sleeper. The lower height and width make the compact RV a little less bulky than its larger compadre. That makes it easier to drive in high-wind conditions and on winding mountain roads.

Standard RV rental

The Standard RV rental option is perhaps the most common choice among Cruise America customers. It’s a midrange, mid-sized vehicle that packs in plenty of space and extras to make that roadie across the USA a comfy one.

It’s really a classic motorhome, offering a partitioned bedroom, a dining sector, and a large kitchen. You get all the comforts of gas stoves and refrigerator in the cooking area, and there’s a roomy bathroom that’s loaded with a flowing shower and fresh-water loo. You might want to consider this style of an auto if you’re after the classic RV experience. It’s also got room enough for the whole family and is an all-round versatile ride.

Large RV rental

Whoever said size didn’t matter? The largest RV rental on offer from Cruise America is powered by a Ford V10 engine and comes with the biggest amount of square meterage of all the options. It’s one for extended families who are looking to bring their pets in tow. And it’s a top choice if you’re looking for more creature comforts on a longer, coast-to-coast road trip. Benefits include a trio of double beds, a single sleeping area, and dual rear tires for a smoother journey.

How much does an RV rental with Cruise America cost?

As with all sorts of vehicle rentals, the costs of a Cruise America RV can be tricky to calculate. What with daily rates, fuel surcharges, add-on policies, and a whole host of potential other extras to factor in, it’s usually best to take a holistic approach. That means calculating what your whole trip will cost, from the moment you collect your RV to the moment you drop it off.

Daily Rate 

Naturally, the daily rate will change depending on what particular RV rental you plump for – larger motorhomes will set you back more than smaller ones. On average, the price of a standard motorhome is about $50-60 a night. For a 10-day trip, you’re looking at $500 all in.

Miscellaneous Top-Ups 

What’s more, personal kits continuing necessities like pillowcases, matches, and plates can be added for around $100 per ride. There are state taxes to tack on, as well as the cost of electrical generators. You’ll also have to pay a deposit on pick-up, which is blocked at $500 on a credit card or taken in $1000 cash. And that’s not even mentioning the price of mileage (see below).

One of the things that affect the bottom line on Cruise America RV rentals the most is the mileage. There are surcharges for mileage applied to every vehicle. That comes in at $0.35 per mile and is counted at 100 miles on local rentals, and 250 miles on point-to-point rentals. So, you can expect to pay upwards of $35 more per day when renting on a standard RV just to cover the cost of getting around. Of course, that estimation may go up or down according to your policy and location.

Some RV rentals with Cruise America might be eligible for a premium unlimited mileage option. This is by far the simplest way to go about things. It’s not available for all vehicles but means you won’t have to keep an eye on that distance ticker.

Where can I go with my Cruise America RV?

One of the joys of opting for a Cruise America RV is the freedom it brings. If you’ve ever dreamed of hitting the open road – this is where that dream becomes reality. Yep, from the ancient granite domes of Yosemite to the sand-blasted beachfront of the Carolinas, the wetlands of Florida to the sleeping volcanos of the Washington Cascades, there are not many limits on the wonders you’ll be able to see when driving your motorhome across the stars and stripes.

It’s really one-way RV rentals that make all that possible. They allow you to go from A to B without worrying about how you’re going to return your wheels at the end of it all. Cue New York to San Diego trips. Get ready for those jaunts down Route 66. Prepare for odysseys up the surf-washed Pacific Coastline. You get the idea.

Before starting your trip, it’s worth reading up on the few restrictions there are on RV rentals with Cruise America. For example, customers won’t get recovery if they go off-road in the far-flung Yukon. And there’s no help for breakdowns in extreme Death Valley locations come the scorching summer months, either.

Where can I sleep with my Cruise America RV?

One of the most common questions that would-be renters ask is where they can spend the night. Of course, RV rentals are equipped with a bed (sometimes several). But does that mean you can rock up and catch some Z’s wherever you want?

The answer: Within limits.

In fact, just glossing over Cruise America reviews is usually enough to see the variety of places where RV rental folk have gotten some shuteye. They include Walmart parking lots (it’s recommended to ask permission of the store manager beforehand, though) and rest stops on the roadside in a whole host of states (some states, like Arizona and Texas, don’t permit it).

However, by far the most comfortable place to spend the night in your RV is in a dedicated RV campsite. There are more of these than you can poke a Buffalo wing across the United States. They sit in sleepy city suburbs and cling to the edges of breathtaking national parks alike. Some have modern facilities with electrical hookup points and flushing toilets. Others are more rustic affairs, where it’s likely to be just you and the engine and the starry skies.

You can soften the cost of staying in RV rental campgrounds by getting passes of all sorts. Take America the Beautiful pass as an example. It costs $80 for the year but provides the holder access to loads of federally operated recreation sites, many of which contain paid campgrounds at a small extra charge.

What’s it like driving a Cruise America RV?

Let’s not pretend that driving a dual-wheeled 20-footer is the same as purring around in an economy car. It’s not. C-type motorhomes are a little different from classic autos, but not so different you won’t be able to handle them.

The major changes are the effect that high winds and adverse weather will have on your driving. You might find you’ll need to compensate more on the wheel as you come over the blustery buttes of Colorado, for example. Adding to that, the extra weight means it can often be tricky getting up steep slopes, though powerful Ford engines and modern tech usually takes care of that too.

How to rent an RV from Cruise America

MT asked how I wanted to celebrate my birthday. Without thinking, I said, “I’d love to rent an RV and drive to the Grand Canyon.”

Two hours later, we had reserved an RV through Cruise America .

Pros & cons of renting an rv from cruise america, visit your cruise america rental location and bring a tape measure, wait, what about gas, save money by bringing your own stuff, how to save on campground fees, start thinking slow, learn as much as possible about your rv, take a video of the walkaround and ask lots of questions, take a breath and start driving, pack up and hit the road, stay at a nearby campground and call ahead.

There are two main reasons we chose a Cruise America rental RV:

• They’re everywhere . That meant we could rent an RV from the Chicago-area location less than half an hour from our house.
• Value for the price . We didn’t know it beforehand, but our rental period (9/26 – 10/11/19) just happened to be when Cruise America was offering discount rates.

There are 126 Cruise America locations across the US and Canada. Because of that, we figured we’d be in good shape if we had trouble with our rig or needed to swap with another one while on the road. Fortunately, that was never an issue.

After we made our reservation, Cruise America’s generous cancellation policy allowed us to do some additional research. We quickly discovered they’re the least expensive option for renting an RV, even at Cruise America’s normal rates.

However, Cruise America rigs are also the most bare-boned. So if you’re looking for luxury, you’ll have to go with an RV dealer. You could also check out Outdoorsy or RVshare to rent an RV directly from a private owner.

Which RV model to rent?

We considered the 20-foot Compact model , but they appeared to cost the same or more than the Standard model. And the Large 30-foot model was just too much rig for us.

UPDATE August 2021 : Cruise America has added another model to its rental lineup, the 21-foot Compact Plus . It has the same 7.5-foot width as the Compact model, but is just a bit roomier. The Compact Plus is currently available at only a few locations as they roll out this unit.

Remember, it’s not just the people or pets. Everyone’s stuff is also along for the ride, so choosing the right size for your family’s comfort and needs is crucial.

In the end, we chose to rent the 25-foot Standard model . It was perfect for the two of us and our dog, Nola. Cruise America says the Standard can sleep 5, which is also the number of seatbelts. However, I wouldn’t want to test that on a 2-week trip unless everyone gets along really well.

To help you decide, we recommend that you visit your Cruise America rental location in advance. Bring a tape measure . Walking through the different rental RVs beforehand allows you to take measurements, notes, photos, and video. These will help you choose the right model for you, and also plan for your trip . Two weeks before our trip, we called our rental location, The Truck Shop near O’Hare Airport, and asked if there was a good day to visit when it wouldn’t be too busy. When we arrived, there was only one Standard model on the lot, and it was waiting for repair parts.

That rig was in rough shape! We were told that it was three years old and that Cruise America only keeps rigs in their fleet for about three years before they’re sold or refurbished. I don’t know how many miles that rig had on its odometer, but it had been well used. Even so, we decided we could live with a rental unit like this for two weeks, provided that everything was in working order.

Incidentally, we asked whether we could improve our chance of getting a newer model, such as picking up on a certain day or bribing someone. (No, we didn’t bribe anyone.) We never got a clear answer on this, but we did choose a Thursday pickup. We also arrived early, which may have helped us get a Cruise America RV that only had 21,680 miles on it and was manufactured a mere 6 months earlier. Everything was super clean and nothing was broken. Whew!

OK, what does it cost to rent an RV?

Cruise America’s RV rental rates fluctuate by season and location. Here’s what we paid:

• $75/night for 14 nights
• The normal rate is $.35/mile
• $10/night for the Zero Deductible Plan

If you think about it, that’s about what you’d pay for most hotels/motels on a driving trip. But with an RV, you don’t have to unpack every time you stop for the night.

Cruise America doesn’t advertise the mpg ratings of their rigs, probably because they don’t want to scare anyone. We kept a trip log and found that we averaged 7-9 miles per gallon . Why so low?

• RVs are not aerodynamic.
• 40 gallons of water = 333.6 lbs
• 55 gallons of gasoline = 343.75 lbs
• Plus the contents of the 24.5 gallon sewage and grey water tanks
• Cruise America only offers gas RVs, and they get worse mileage than Diesel RVs.
• The Ford V8 and V10 chassis are designed to pull a lot of weight, with little concern for efficiency.

Ultimately, we spent around $1,100 on gas alone. Your mileage will, of course, vary.

Cruise America offers two provisioning kits that include things like kitchen supplies, sheets, and towels. We didn’t use these because we were able to pack our RV at home. However, they could be useful if you have to fly somewhere to pick up your RV.

Finally, there are campground fees . These vary quite a bit from place to place. We paid as little as $10 and as much as $55. Price is a factor of location—whether it’s a federal, state, or private campground—as well as the type of hookup, full or partial. A “full hookup” includes Electricity, City Water, and Sewage.

On our trip, we dumped the black tank (sewage) and grey water tank (sinks and shower) every 2-3 days. I’m sure we could have gone longer than that, but we were trying to shed weight whenever possible.

With that in mind, we could have saved some money by choosing “partial hookup” campsites that didn’t include sewer hookups. That’s because most campgrounds have a dump station at the entrance/exit. Partial sites with electricity and city water are great if you need to run the air conditioning, or if you want to take a shower.

You’ve reserved your rental RV, now what?

Start planning your journey. This will help you make decisions about packing and other logistics. If you’re planning to visit a major destination such as the Grand Canyon, make your campground reservations as soon as possible . And be sure to allow plenty of travel days to reach that destination.

Traveling in an RV is slower than in a car. Period. Everything just takes longer. Go ahead and plot your journey in Google Maps. Then, for every 3 hours of estimated travel time, add another hour to allow for “RV Time.” There are a lot of factors that go into this:

• On interstates, you’ll want to join the trucks in the right lane and travel about 5 miles under the limit. Sure, you can go 75-85 miles per hour, but it’ll be miserable for everyone and your gas mileage will suffer greatly.
• If it’s windy, you’ll have to slow down and you’ll get tired faster.
• You’re on vacation, right? You’ll want to stop and see stuff along the way.
• Stopping to get gas always seems to take at least half an hour.
• You’ll eventually discover that driving on slower/smaller highways is a lot more fun!

We figured out that driving roughly 250 miles per day was a good target. Keep in mind, though, that MT never drove, only I did. You may be able to cover more distance per day with a second driver.

This could also be an entire post, but there are some great resources on the Cruise America site to get you started. I recommend watching all their videos now , and then watching them again just before your trip.

Be sure to also install the Cruise America app and download the videos in the app. As of this writing, the app itself isn’t terribly useful, except for those orientation and troubleshooting videos. You may find yourself without good cell service on your trip, so download those videos in advance in case you need to reference them.

There’s also a Renter Assistance Guide that you can download as a PDF in a variety of languages. This guide will also be provided in your RV and it’s handy when you’re trying to figure out how the refrigerator operates.

Pick up your RV

You’ll need to call 3-5 days in advance to schedule a pick-up time for your RV. Arrive early and allow plenty of time. You’ll have to watch the Orientation Video again and sign a lot of paperwork. So that you can focus, we recommend that you not bring pets or small children along.

You’ll then be walked out to your RV, which may be wet and gleaming from the truck wash. Our technician had the engine running and the air conditioning going at full blast. He walked us around the RV, noted any existing damage, and quickly explained how things worked.

On the second day of our trip, we discovered some damage that hadn’t been noticed during the walkaround. However, we reviewed the video that MT shot and sent screenshots to Cruise America to prove that we hadn’t caused the damage.

After about an hour of orientation, you’ll drive off the lot and into traffic! Go slow, take your time, and don’t be embarrassed if you have to pull over to take a breath. If you’ve never driven a moving truck or other large vehicle, you’ll need time to adjust to turning corners and to learning how tall and wide you are. As the orientation video says (in an Australian accent), “You’ve got a second story to think about.”

We drove back home so we could pack, and planned a route through Chicago that would keep us on wider thoroughfares as much as possible. When we reached the narrow streets of our neighborhood, I just kept reminding myself of all the UPS trucks and garbage trucks and moving trucks that traverse these avenues on a daily basis.

A tip I learned for staying centered in a lane is to keep scanning the side-view mirrors . Because of the height of the truck, your tendency will be to stay too far away from vehicles on the right side of your RV. You’ll learn to trust that you have more room than you think .

Cruise America does not provide back-up cameras , but we didn’t find this to be much of an issue. You’re going to be backing up less than 1% of the time, and you will always have assistance from a family member or campground host. Also, many campgrounds offer pull-through sites.

Then go through that list and note the items you could live without. If you leave those extra items at home, you can save both weight and storage space.

Our only remaining piece of advice is to aim for a nearby campground to stay at on your first night . We didn’t hit the road until around 6:30pm, which meant driving through Chicago rush-hour traffic. We finally reached our target campground in Iowa at around 11pm, so it would have been smarter to choose a campground closer to home.

Luckily, we’d called ahead to reserve a spot, and explained it was our first-ever RV trip . The Rock Island KOA gave us a great pull-through site that was easy to locate in the dark. We only used the fresh water and electric hookups because we knew we’d hit the road early the next day.

I slept well that first night, despite fighting a cold. Pro tip: pack some cough medicine .

Cruise America, as a corporate rental company, strongly contrasts with popular peer-to-peer rental service providers like RVshare and Outdoorsy. And looking for the best RV rental service, you are likely wondering whether Cruise America is a good place to rent an RV from.

To figure out whether renting an RV from this company is worth it, we need to cover a lot of details, including rental options, fees, penalties, insurance, and whatnot. They are important for our points that we will present to you in the end, as well as for your understanding of what Cruise America is.

Let’s begin with the rental options offered by Cruise America.

Cruise America Review

The primary rental options offered by Cruise America is the traditional round-trip rental where you rent an RV, drive it to your destination, spend your vacation, drive back, and pay the fees. This rental has a minimum duration of 7 days.

Aside from this, however, Cruise America also offers one-way and long-term rentals. Let’s overview them a little more in-depth.

One-way rental

With one-way rental, you can pick up an RV at one Cruise America location and drop it off at another, without having to drive the RV back to the location where you took it from.

One-way rentals can be cheaper than round-trip rentals, with the rates sometimes being as low as $1/night. However, there is a drop fee associated with one-way rental – usually between $250-650 – as well as some other fees that we are going to talk about a bit later.

With peer-to-peer RV rental, people very rarely rent-out their RV for one-way trips. The vast majority of the rental offers are round-trip. Thus, the one-way rental option certainly is a plus for Cruise America.

On the other hand, Cruise has “more than 120 rental locations” in the United States and Canada, which is very little given that they are servicing almost the entire North America. So even though one-way rental has some nice benefits, you will be rather limited with drop-off locations.

It should be also kept in mind that Cruise America won’t always able to provide RVs for one-way rental due to certain RV number requirements at each location.

Long-term rental

Cruise America also offers long-term RV rental. In fact, they offer this type of rental for both temporary housing needs for individuals and for business uses. The pricing for these rental options is set on a case-by-case basis, so you’d need to contact Cruise America and provide them with all the details of your trip so that they could set a fee.

As a corporate rental company, Cruise America has its own RV fleet.

One very common complaint with Cruise America is their poor selection of RVs. And indeed, even though they do offer RVs of different sizes for rental, they only have a couple of Thor Majestic class C motorhomes, which are basically reinforced variants of Thor Four Winds RVs.

Cruise America has 4 RV rental options to offer – Large, Standard, Compact, and Truck Camper. These options differ by their amenities and comfort, and we think we should briefly overview them so that you know what you are dealing with.

Cruise America seeks to always maintain their RVs in good condition for rental, so you could be sure that you are getting a problem-free RV from them. Even if mechanical breakdowns do occur while on the road, Cruise America has an assistance and reimbursement program, which we will cover a bit later.

Before moving on to overviewing the RV offers, we’d like to note that Cruise America provides quite a lot of information on their RVs. Compared to offers available on peer-to-peer rental websites, it may be much easier to make an informed decision with Cruise America.

Cruise America doesn’t dive too deep into the specs of their RVs – which they maybe should – but they do provide you with some crucial information in regard to floorplans and key amenities.

Large RV Rental

The RV in this offer is a 30 feet class C motorhome, the Thor Majestic 28A. This motorhome offers up to 7 sleeping spots. Among the amenities provided with this RV are:

• Air conditioning.
• Shower & freshwater toilet.
• Gas cooktop.
• 4KW generator.

A thing that Cruise America also lists among the comfort features of this plan is pet friendliness. This actually is a feature of all the rental plans, and it is among the things that we like about Cruise America. With peer-to-peer rental, not everyone is going to allow you to bring along pets.

Cruise America also allows towing with their 30 feet class C motorhomes. However, there are certain limits to towing:

• Cruise America doesn’t provide hook-up services or towing equipment.
• The towing weight needs to be within 2,500 pounds of tow weight restrictions.
• A daily towing charge is imposed if you tow a vehicle to Cruise America’s RVs.

Keep in mind that before rental, Cruise America requires that you declare the intention to tow prior to departure from a rental center.

Cruise America also allows customers to attach a bike rack to the receiver hitch free of charge. The customer needs to again let the rental center know about the intention of mounting a bike rack so that the RV’s locking pin can be removed.

Standard RV rental

With Standard RV rental, you get a 25 feet Thor Majestic 23A class C motorhome.

The amenities are very similar between the Standard and Large RV rentals. One difference should be noted though – at the moment of the review’s writing, Cruise America provided customers with generators only in the US, so do keep that in mind if you want to rent an RV from them in Canada.

Aside from that, 25 feet RVs sleep up to 5 people.

Compact RV rental

With the Compact RV rental option, you are getting a 20 feet Thor Majestic 19G motorhome. The RVs in this plan offer up to 3 sleeping spots.

Like it was with the Standard RV rental plan, Cruise America only provides US customers with RV generators. And aside from some differences linked to the smaller size – like smaller water or fuel tank sizes – the Compact RV rental doesn’t differ from the previous two options.

Truck Camper RV rental

With the Truck Camper rental, Cruise America basically provides you with a Ford F-150 truck with a truck camper mounted on top. Aside from the much smaller size, one crucial difference in this option is that the RVs don’t include a generator, as well as can’t be used for towing.

On the other hand, the interior amenities in the Truck Campers are very nice, essentially corresponding to those of the previous rental options. And like the Standard and Compact RV rental options, you are getting 3 sleeping spots out of this thing.

RV rental rates

Overall, here’s what you will have to pay for when renting from Cruise America:

• Nightly fee.
• Mileage fee.
• Environmental fee.

In addition, there are some charges that you may or may not need to pay:

• Generator fee if you use the RV generator.
• Early Bird Departure Special fee.
• Optional kit fees.
• De-winterization fee.
• Towing fees if you use the RV for towing.
• Certain penalties for failing to comply with the rental conditions.

As you can see, Cruise America has many service fees, and this is a big reason why people prefer to opt for peer-to-peer rental services. If you will indeed be renting an RV from Cruise America, we’d advise you to find out about all the possible fees directly from them since we may have missed something, and things may change over time.

Cruise America requires that all the payments be made with Visa, MasterCard, and American Express credit cards. In the US, they also accept Discover Cards. The credit card needs to bear an imprint of your name that matches the driver’s license. The cardholder is required to be listed on the contract as the primary renter or an additional authorized driver.

Upon the return of the vehicle, Cruise America accepts stored value/prepaid/gift cards.

Now, let’s overview all the aforementioned charges one by one.

Mandatory fees

The very first thing you are going to pay for with Cruise America is deposits. Cruise America requires you to make two kinds of deposits – a $300 reservation down payment and a refundable $500 security deposit.

The reservation down payment will be applied toward the rental charges. As for the security deposit, it is used to cover any excess charges that occur during the trip. Upon return, extra charges are balanced against the security deposit.

If you didn’t use up the $500 security deposit, Cruise America will issue a credit to cover the refund. If you aren’t using a credit card, Cruise America will issue a check and send to your home address. Cruise America doesn’t do cash refunds.

Speaking of cash, the $500 security deposit needs to be paid with a credit card. If you are using any means other than a credit card, the security deposit charge will be $1,000. Keep this in mind in order to avoid quite expensive surprise costs.

A thing to note is that for certain rental applications like Bonnaroo or Burning Man, Cruise America may impose increased charges at their own discretion. In addition, they may require you to make a full prepayment in advance for rental events like auto race events, music festivals, or gatherings in remote areas.

Per-night fees

Cruise America imposes per-night fees which vary from season to season. On average, it seems that the nightly fee is around $90-100. It may be lower or higher depending on the season.

Given that Cruise America rents out RVs for at least 7 days, your fees per night will likely quite easily exceed the $300 down payment deposit.

Cruise America calls their daily rental rates Flex Rates since they vary over time, and sometimes quite significantly. If you book an RV early and there are plenty of them available, the daily rental rate will be lower for you.

If you need a change after booking and confirmation (aside from changing party size and adding pre-paid items), the rate will be recalculated using the most current Flex Rate. This Flex Rate will be compared to the Flex Rate that you’ve booked an RV with. The higher rate of the two will be selected as a new Flex Rate.

Mileage fees

Aside from a nightly fee, Cruise America applies estimated mileage charges to your rental in advance. Mileage charges are per night based on 100 miles for round-trip rentals and 250 miles for one-way rentals. In other words, you will be charged 100 miles per day with round-trip rental and 250 miles per day for one-way rental.

At the end of the rental, you will be refunded if you’ve driven fewer miles than you’ve paid for. Conversely, you will be charged $0.35 per mile if you have exceeded the estimated mileage.

Cruise America offers pre-paid mileage packs as well – the 100-Mile Package for $28, 500-Mile Package for $140, Unlimited Miles Package for $750, and Unlimited Miles Plus Package for $1000.

The Unlimited Miles Plus Package includes unlimited mileage, one personal kit for each passenger, one vehicle departure kit, and unlimited use of the RV generator for 21 days. Past 21 days, Cruise America will charge you with $29 per day. The same applies to the Unlimited Miles Package.

All the costs above are excluding taxes. Since these will likely depend on the area you will be renting the RV from, it is difficult to say how much tax you will have to pay.

Environmental fee

Cruise America imposes a $5 environmental fee per rental. As Cruise America writes, this fee’s purpose is to offset a “wide range of environmental expenses” associated with the proper disposal of shop waste, filters, tires, batteries, etc.

Optional fees

Generator fees.

Cruise America also imposes a generator fee of $3.50 per hour. This fee will be collected upon return based on the onboard running time meter. There is also an option of purchasing unlimited generator usage at an $8 daily rate.

Keep in mind that the generator is not required for normal RV operation, so you don’t have to operate it while traveling. A generator will be required only if you decide to run the RV electrical appliances while on the road. You can power all the appliances at campgrounds with electrical supply systems.

Early Bird Departure Special fee

Cruise America offers an optional Early Bird Departure Special for a $350 fee. The Early Bird Departure Special allows you to depart from a rental location as early as 9 AM instead of the regular 1 PM.

You will then need to return the vehicle at the specified date between 9 AM and 3 PM. Regular renters need to return the vehicle by 9 AM and in no case later than 11 AM.

The Early Bird Departure Special needs to be reserved at least 30 days in advance and prepaid. In addition, keep in mind that Sunday departures/returns aren’t allowed.

Optional kits

Cruise America also offers a couple of optional kits for borrowers. These kits are the Vehicle Provisioning Kit and the Personal Kit.

The Vehicle Provisioning Kit includes kitchen-related items like bows, forks, knives, plates, and many other things. The Personal Kit includes items like bath & dish towels, pillows with pillowcases, etc.

The Personal Kit costs $60 per person, while the Vehicle Provisioning Kit costs $110 per vehicle. All items must be returned clean to Cruise America.

De-winterization fee

In locations with colder winter weather, Cruise America winterizes their motorhomes from around mid-October to late March. When winterized, you cannot use the RV’s water and holding tanks. Due to this, if you chose to have the motorhome de-winterized, you will need to pay an up to $40 fee.

Towing charges

If you plan to tow a car or boat behind the motorhome, keep in mind that Cruise America imposes towing charges of $25 per night.

Aside from the charges we’ve described above, there are certain penalties that borrowers will need to pay should they fail to comply with the rental terms.

These penalties include, but aren’t limited to, the following:

• Housekeeping charges of up to $250 for returning an RV uncleaned.
• Reservation changes are charged at $50 per change from second and subsequent reservation changes. The first change is free of charge.
• Dump charges of up to $50 for not emptying the RV holding tank prior to returning the vehicle.
• The RV is overdue after 11 AM on the return date. If you fail to return the vehicle on time, you will be charged a fee of $25 per hour after 11 AM of the return date.
• You are responsible for any damage or equipment loss, except mechanical wear. The penalty for damage or equipment loss is limited to $1,500 per occurrence or incident.
• $200 – 46 days or more prior to departure.
• $600 – 16-45 days prior to departure.
• $850 – 8-15 days prior to departure.
• $1050 – 1-7 days prior to departure.
• Full rental charges – departure day and no-shows.

Cruise America rental deals

Cruise America from time to time offers rental deals and discounts. For example, for departures between September 4, 2019, and December 31, 2019, from any of Cruise America’s North American rental centers, a mileage rate reduction of 50% applies. Another deal is 300 free miles for departures by December 31, 2019, in the US.

Offers are typically not combinable with others, but they do offer some remarkable value. These were examples of deals available as of June 2019, but Cruise America will surely introduce others in the future as well.

How Cruise America handles RV maintenance & breakdowns

Overall, it seems that Cruise America keeps a good eye on their RVs. They appear to be quite strict when it comes to RV condition, so you could be sure that the RV you are renting from them is in a good state.

But for cases when the rented RV breaks down, Cruise America offers nice support to the clients.

Roadside assistance & repair reimbursement

In the event of mechanical breakdown on the road, Cruise America provides the around-the-clock Travelers Assistance Hotline. For authorized repairs, your expenses will be reimbursed by Cruise America. Alternatively, Cruise America may directly pay for the repairs.

According to the conditions of Cruise America, any vehicle service expense over $75 requires authorization from Travelers Assistance, where your problem will be documented in a customer service log.

For repairs costing under $75, you may have repairs done, but you will need to keep the receipt with you for reimbursement. Rental centers will reimburse receipts under $75 without a service log. If a repair service costing over $75 isn’t documented by Cruise America, you will not be provided with a reimbursement.

Aside from that, engine battery jump-starts require approval from Travelers Assistance, so keep that in mind.

Long service time reimbursements

If as a result of a breakdown the RV is in repair for 12 hours or less through no fault of yours, Cruise America may refund you a portion of the daily rental rate. If the repair requires more than 12 hours, certain living/transportation expenses may be reimbursed by Cruise America as well. However, you will need to immediately report the breakdown to Cruise America.

Cruise America provides up to $30 a day per party for transportation expenses and up to $30 a day per person for lodging. Total provisions are limited by Cruise America up to $3000 per tour. To receive reimbursement, you will need to provide all receipts for your expenses.

In certain cases, Cruise America does not reimburse for repairs, transportation, and lodging. Cruise America does not cover expenses associated with the breakdown of the RV generator, AC unit, refrigerator, microwave, appliances, and cruise control since these aren’t needed for the basic operation of the RV.

In addition, Cruise America doesn’t reimburse damage caused by collision or accident. Plus, failure to call Travelers Assistance immediately after a breakdown will make the reimbursement void.

There are certain travel restrictions as well. The areas that fall under Cruise America’s restrictions are:

• Death Valley and other desert areas.
• Alaska and Manhattan, New York City, in the US.
• Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Newfoundland in Canada.

If issues occur in specified areas, Cruise America coverages will not apply. In fact, you may be held responsible for all vehicle damages associated with driving the RV in the restricted areas.

Aside from that, Cruise America prohibits entry of their RVs to Mexico, so be mindful of that.

How Cruise America handles tolls and traffic violations

Cruise America also has specific procedures with regard to tolls and parking/traffic violations.

Cruise America has a policy for All-Electronic Tolling. If you didn’t know, with All-Electronic Tolling, the picture of a vehicle’s license plate is taken and then used to determine who will be billed.

In some cases, a process called reassignment is utilized by Cruise America. The company basically transfers your information to the relevant tolling authority. Then, you will have to handle the fees yourself.

For other cases, Cruise America will pay the tolling authority directly. However, Cruise America will impose a $10 administrative fee on you and charge the credit card you used for rental. The administrative fee is per rental.

For other tolling services like EZ Pass lanes or Fastrack, it will be your responsibility to use a corresponding transponder in order to avoid any fees or penalties.

Parking/traffic violations

Cruise America handles parking and traffic violations in a similar manner to tolling. However, in cases where they pay the fines for you, you will be charged a $35 administrative fee per rental.

At rental return, you will be responsible for reporting and paying for any parking or traffic violations. If you fail to report a parking/traffic violation at return, Cruise America will charge an administrative fee of up to $250.

Cruise America rental coverage

A very nice thing about Cruise America is that they offer coverage options for their customers in case of accidents or mechanical breakdown. We’ve overviewed mechanical breakdown coverage above, but there’s more to the coverage provided by Cruise America.

All in all, Cruise America offers:

• Up to $1 million Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI) against claims made by third parties for property damage or bodily/injury caused by the operation of the RV. There are certain exclusions to the SLI, a part of which is contained in the rental contract.
• Expense reimbursement of up to $3,000 in case of long service times, which we overviewed earlier.
• Responsibility of up to $1,500 for vehicle damage or loss per occurrence. If you do not abide by the terms of the rental contract and fail to promptly report any incident, you will be fully responsible for the damage or loss of the RV.

RV departure & return at Cruise America

The RV departure time at Cruise America begins at 1 PM. For Early Birders, as we mentioned above, the departure starts at 9 AM and ends at 12 PM.

A common point of complaint among users of Cruise America services is that it can take several hours before you actually leave the rental center. Early Birders may be able to avoid waiting for hours, but they aren’t insured from it as well.

As for RV return, regular renters are required to return the vehicle by 9 AM and no later than 11 AM. As we mentioned above, Cruise America imposes a $25 fee for each hour past 11 AM. At the same time, no refunds will be made if you return the vehicle early or if you pick it up late.

For Early Birders, which we again mentioned earlier in the material, the return time is between 9 AM and 3 PM. Failure to return the vehicle in this time frame will incur an hourly $25 penalty.

Keep in mind that departure and return times on Saturday may vary because some Cruise America locations close earlier.

Customer interaction

Customer interaction is another area where Cruise America is notorious. If you look around for user reviews, you will find that quite a considerable number of people have complained about the customer support of Cruise America in various areas, starting from the quickness of service and ending with the inability of the company to resolve issues.

A testimony to this may be Cruise America’s frankly quite low BBB rating , which indicates how the company is expected to interact with customers. There have been so many complaints about Cruise America that BBB has even put alerts on the company profile page, indicating noticeable issues with customer service.

What we really think of Cruise America

With everything above in mind, we’d like to present to you the advantages and disadvantages of RV rental with Cruise America, as well as what we really think of Cruise America.

So, the advantages are:

• A good amount of information provided on the RVs.
• Well-maintained RVs.
• One-way and long-term rentals available.
• Pet-friendliness.

As a corporate RV rental company, Cruise America isn’t going to provide you with much flexibility. They have a mechanism that works and doesn’t really take into account your specific needs, unlike peer-to-peer rental platforms.  You have limited options when it comes to fees and RV selection. Their customer service also isn’t spot-on.

On the other hand, they do have some benefits like one-way rental, a comprehensive reimbursement policy, and occasional deals. So we can’t say that Cruise America is a bad place to rent an RV from.

In the end, we’d say that those who want to quickly rent an RV may want to go for Cruise America since it has an established policy that is designed to ensure hassle-free rentals. But if you want flexibility and don’t mind spending a lot of time finding the right RV, you’d want to go for a peer-to-peer platform.

Beware of first-time posts touting any commercial service.

Here is my Cruise America experience, I hope it provides you with a closer, honest look before you decide to rent with this company. There are good and bad points to this review.

First of all when you are booking the rv, you pay a deposit and then the rest comes out like a week or two later, so make sure you have enough in your account to avoid fees and the cancellation of your rv booking.

We booked the C19 compact rv. I travelled with my sister and we are both young, so we didnt know anything about rv's, but we thought this one was big enough for our needs. We booked this rv for one month. From november 20th-december 20th.

Daily rate $34.80x 30 equals rental total $1044.00.

Extras total:

unlimited miles option $984.50

2x personal kits $110

sales tax $168.75

TOTAL AFTER TAX $2,307.25

On arrival also you have to pay $500 for bond (if using a raised number credit card) or $1000 (if paying cash) which you will get back on return if everything is to standard.

You obviously have to have a drivers licence and be over the age of 21.

A day before you pick the rv up, you must ring them and tell them a time you will be there so they can have it ready. You cannot pick the rv up the day you arrive in from overseas either.

As we did not pay for the 'early bird departure special' we could not get the rv until after 1pm, if you pay for the early special you can drive the rv from 9am. Also when returning the rv if you paid for the early special you can return the rv up until 3pm, however we didnt so you have to return the rv at 9am. If you wish to return the rv a few days early there is no refund for unused days. We actually wished we only booked it for 3 weeks.

We picked our rv up from 223rd east street in carson, Los Angeles (which is in quite a ghetto scary place when taking the metro as two young girls). We paid the bond, signed the contract, and were asked if we wanted to watch the video which you can also watch online on the cruise america sight. We watched the video, then were taken to our rv. We didnt get the run through of the rv like it says on the video. The lady checked the propane and gas (fuel) gauges to see what we had to return with the same amount. Then we were on our way. That was it. We could drive a rv for the first time in a completely different country. pretty overwhelming.

So the personal kit comes with:

The rv comes with two rv manuals and a KOA book and pamphlet.

It also comes with in the c19 compact:

Things you need to buy:

papertowel, clingwrap, containers, bottled water, dust pan of brush, extra blankets (if in winter like we were), dishwashing detergent, tongs, strainer, peeler, plugs for the sinks and garbage bags. also good idea to have electronic cords that you can charge things through the cigarette lghter.

OK things that are broken/need fixing/went wrong etc:

-pressure sensor fault tyre light on dash the whole time we had rv.

-internal furnace aka heater didnt work

-no sink plug? most annoying thing ever to start off with.

-cupboard door latch broken, swings everytime we drive.

-drivers mirror collapses in when you drive 60mph or higher.

-window over table always opens when driving

-exhaust fan above stove top doesnt work

-one of the two cigarette lighters doesnt work.

-good privacy curtains

-lights and alarm work well

-fridge is decent size with freezer draw

-perfect size for 2 people, no more than that.

-gas top works well

-you can use space behind car seats to store suitcases if you dont have the seat right back as well as the space behind the third seat next to the rv door entry.

-the heater in the front of the car works well.

-CD player works well

-plenty of above head storage for clothes, shoes etc

-comfy seats

-table is really handy

Things we wish we knew before roadtripping around the u.s in an rv:

-vehicle must be 'winterised', so you pay $35 to have anti freeze etc. therefore before getting to a cold destination, you must empty your water holding tank otherwise it will freeze. and the propane will be too cold to use and your internal heater doesnt work, so be prepared for a freezing cold night.

-RV parks in america cost an average of $30 for two people per night, any more people and it costs more. Places we liked were Anderson camp in twin falls, malibu rv park (cheap and nice in off peak season), KOA (although expensive eg 66 a night in San Diego). We didnt like Kit Carson in flagstaff, arrived at night, toilets were locked and shoreline didnt fit into designated night sites, even with adaptor. Rv parks will allow you to empty your tanks, use power and wifi and showers, toilets and fresh water.

we didnt use the shower in the rv ever, it was too small and the shower head you have to hold up as you shower, also our 'water heater' button didnt heat anything.

-you can stay at walmart and starbucks carports for free, however in california, pay for a rv park, the police will find you whereever you are and disturb you say you cannot sleep in a vehicle overnight.

AND FINALLY, gas or (fuel) costs an average of $3.13-$3.89 per gallon depending on your destination (we stayed on the west coast of u.s.a). california was the most expensive. Our rv held approximately 35 gallons i think, it normally cost us $80-$100 to fill completely which lasted 5-6hrs worth of driving at 65mph. the rv must have 1/4 tank of gas to operate the generator as it uses 1 gallon per hour.

So overall, what we expected to be a 'budget' holiday for us actually worked out to be just as expensive as our trip to europe backpacking around and staying at hostels and hotels. we actually had financial issues at the end of our trip as the 500 bond did not go straight back on. Hope this helps someone. Also the 24/7 phone assistance and booking through the online company are really easy and helpful assistance.

Laura, that's a very comprehensive post, thanks. However, as someone who has been RVing for over 20 years, there are a few statements that need to be addressed and corrected.

I don't know why your furnace didn't work - probably a problem with the computer "brain" or maybe just the thermostat, but all RVs have good furnaces. Propane works just fine when it is cold outside... that comment really puzzles me!

If you camp in cold weather, you *must* use your furnace to keep the pipes warm. Thousands of people both camp and live in very very cold weather - well below 0ºC - and as long as they manage their hoses and keep the unit warm, they do not have problems.

We just completed a short trip where it was below freezing every night and not much above it during the day and everything was fine.

Yes, they are small, and the smaller the RV, the smaller the shower! Your 19 footer is considered *very small* by American standards. A larger motorhome has a larger shower.

This comment in conjunction with your furnace comment makes it sound to me almost as if you had NO propane! RVs have excellent fast recovery water heaters! They are small, usually only 6 gallons, but very efficient and they heat the water very well.

Inside city limits and in populated areas, there are usually laws not allowing overnighting if you are not in an RV park or campground. However, in rural areas, people do this all the time - it's called "boondocking". Within National Parks, you must be in a recognized campground.

Allie R, keep in mind that in today's world, whenever somebody has a poor experience, they jump on the internet to complain to the world about it. People who are happy with their experiences do not do this nearly as much!

It is true that RV rentals in Florida seem to be "harder-used" than in other areas. Things do go wrong with motorhomes. Broken latches, rattling stovetops, cracked and broken plastic gizmos are very common with rentals as the units get beat up! The last few years, some companies seem to be keeping their rentals longer, so an older one might not be as nice. I would strongly suggest you try the various operations onboard before you leave the rental yard. Make sure the furnace works, for example :-)

I am familar with RV rental companies on the west coast. You could check to see if there is an El Monte RV and/or CAmping World / Moturis office near where you are renting and check reviews on them. Also, do a general search and see what turns up.

Yes, it's an old post, but laura has posted some good info and advice, and based on personal experience - which is always invaluable.

Motorhome rentals for a family with several children may make more sense than constantly changing motels, particularly if the children are younger. No changing motels every night, and parents can avoid dragging kids into restaurants twice a day. But "Mom" will still have to do the dishes ;-)

Light is powered by the auxiliary battery system. There is a power cord supplied with the vehicle, when plugged into an external power point at a camp site it will power the Aircon, microwave and 110 volt outlets. There is also a gasoline powered generator for use when other power is not available. The fridge, stove, oven, furnace and water heater are LP Gas powered. If you choose to operate the gasoline-powered 110-volt generator, extra charges will accrue at $3.50 per hour as determined by an installed running time meter. Or, unlimited usage may be prepaid or purchased at departure at a rate of $7 per rental day. The generator is not required for normal vehicle operation.

Our Compact Plus RV is an exciting addition to our fleet and is narrower and will fit into a regular parking spot. It's perfect for smaller families or a couple with a few kids. The cab-over bed offers ample room, plus the rear dinette folds into a bed sleeping 4 comfortably. With a new and improved layout taking advantage of space, this RV incorporates all the improvements of our other models with increased outside storage. The kitchen and bathroom are in the middle of the coach allowing for more dinette / sleeping area in the back.     First-time renters will appreciate the narrower 7.5 feet/2.3 meter width, which makes driving in hilly areas safer and easier and makes parking in any lot a breeze.   As with all Cruise RVs, excess weight has been removed without sacrifice to structural integrity. Reducing vehicle weight and inflating tires with nitrogen to maintain tire pressure results in better gas mileage.

Sadly I can't give a half star but our experience with Cruise America can only be described as completely awful . If you are looking to rent an RV, I would choose almost anyone else you can find- literally build an RV yourself if you have to instead of using them. Cruise America pulled off the rare feat of making our 7 hour trip a 12-hour nightmare both ways. The RV we got should have never been allowed off the lot and the only logical reason it could have possibly passed their inspection is either complete laziness, outright stupidity, a greed for money despite putting in no effort, or most likely a mixture of all 3. The alignment was so bad in this truck that it tore the right wheel to shreds. When we called for help, we were basically given a shrug emoji and told to fend for ourselves because, and I quote the employee here, "it's Sunday". So, if you are taking a trip, make sure it's not on a Sunday because that is apparently a reason to not give a shit anymore for employees all over the country, despite running a retail travel service where people are constantly traveling on Sunday. We were fortunate enough to make it home on the spare; by the time we got back, it was on it's last legs. Basically, we were given an unsafe truck to hurtle at 70 MPH down the highway with no oversight from the inspection team and zero help from the company once their shit product failed. It was most likely my worst retail renting experience of my life. Do not use this company ever, I guarantee you it will be a terrible time and whatever you do do not use the bathroom in these, as it doesn't work. Here is a list of things you can do besides using one of these terrible RVs from the worst RV-rental company in America: 1) Fly yourself- I mean literally flap your arms like wings 2) Walk even if it takes you 6 months 3) Get shot out of a cannon and pray you land at your destination 4) Don't go on your trip- missing it will be better than dealing with these chuckleheads 5) Get a root canal and have your periodontist travel you in your chair to the destination during the procedure 6) Get yourself in a human centipede situation and run down to your destination 7) Strap yourself to the front of a train and hope for the best Seriously, this company is the fucking worst. DO. NOT. USE. THEM.

PLEASE READ IF CONSIDERING BUYING !!! So I bought from this location almost a year ago , when I tell you that this place is an absolute scam rip off artist it's horrible . So I bought an RV ( refurbished) and it has been issue after issue , I'm exhausted and SUPER disappointed that they would sale this to me with all the issues . So let's start from here , when I bought it both batteries ( coach battery & Engine battery ) was both over 4 years old , first time it got cold both died . $360 for both Next , complete water system in the coach failed , multiple water line breaks , Coach water pump was leaking in multiple locations , when investigated they didn't run the water lines correct and it looked as if they had the same issues prior $ 1700 RV has been kept in a indoor garage ,,, took it out for the first time in the rain to take a drive ,,, ALL 3 skylights ( over bed , over driver cabin bed & bathroom ALL leaking severely ). After investigating it was never siliconed correctly, they did a half a$$ job sealing it just to make it ready to go , it was an absolute mess on the roof , service person was amazed on how bad the job was ... $1200 First time using the gas , turned gas on and it was leaking , entire gas system needed to be replaced , turned it on and all I could smell was gas ,,, replaced everything $500 . We have put barley 1k miles on this thing and it is an absolute mess .... I wish I could speak to someone higher up but I'm sure they don't care .... I urge ANYONE looking for a used RV run for your life in the opposite direction from this place ...

this place sucks. services members are terribly slow and not willing to work with customers in anything close to a timely manner. I had an appointment to pick up my RV at 11 and now I am being told I will be waiting here till 2pm. do yourself a favor don't rent here.

After reading all the bad reviews, a lot of which seem to be from other locations, I guess my advice is to insist on getting a newer vehicle and inspect everything before driving off. We had amazing customer service (shout out to Robbie in the Newark, CA office!) at pick-up. He was very informative and helpful with all kinds of tips and information. We were in and out quickly and even got to take off in our vehicle an hour early. The guy who showed us everything on the rv told us that the sensor in the black water (toilet) tank was not working right, it was empty but always showed at 1/3 full bc it likely had a piece of toilet paper blocking the sensor. That was fine, at least we knew about it. Also the propane tank always read emptier than it was even when it was full. The steering wheel also pulled to the left but it corrected itself when we put air in the tire. We explained these issues when checking it back in and the guys were very nice about it and didn't try to say it was our fault. The rv had about 20k miles and everything else was working great and nice and clean. We really enjoyed our road trip of about 1400 miles thru Oregon and the Northern California coast. Rv'ing is glamping in my opinion!! You roll up to your campsite, lock the doors and you're ready to go explore and have fun! No unloading and setting up for hours only to have to break it all down again. Just arrive and enjoy. Hungry? Double burner propane stove is ready to cook whatever you want. There's a microwave if you're lazy. 2 sinks, hot shower, comfy bed. Fridge and freezer with lots of room. We were eating ice cream in the middle of a forest! Yes, it's expensive to rent an rv, but if you're going on vacation and planning to spend time in nature, THIS IS IT FOLKS!!! I never want to camp like a peasant again!! My tips- Download Google maps so you have details when offline. You'd be surprised how little phone/ internet coverage America has outside of the cities. Look around inside the rv before buying supplies. We found a broom and cups, bowls and plates we didn't know about. Most things in the rv are run by propane. The generator is $3.50 per hour to run but that's only used for the microwave when you're not plugged into power. Make sure you feel/ hear the fridge door "click" into lock mode before driving off lol! Secure stuff before driving and put something under the microwave plate so it doesn't jiggle and make a lot of noise when moving. Also secure everything including the spare tire for a quieter smoother ride. Buy rainex for your windshield and windows and take this step for better visibility when driving. Your windows will get gross on the roads and this is a safety hazard. Have someone get out of the rv to help with parking bc there's no rear camera.

This review is for the Newark, CA location. I noticed some other reviews left here were for other locations besides the one for this listing. I have rented twice from this location (Compact Plus model) and have had positive experiences both times. The staff are friendly. They walked me through every single thing that has an on/off switch you'd need to use for living in and upkeeping the RV during a trip. They switch everything on to ensure it works, including both the heater and AC. They explain how the waste valves work. They make sure the water tank and propane are full. The RVs are very clean and on both of my trips I had no issues with anything malfunctioning. (Compare this to my rental from another RV rental chain "The Mountain" where the rep was personality-less and I had to ask her how to turn stuff off/on, the rear cam immediately stopped working, fridge barely worked, side mirror was broken, and more!) An RV has a lot of little parts that can go wrong but I think Cruise America did a good job of maintaining the rentals I had. The only annoying thing is that they do not refill the gas so it's whatever the last person returned it with. I got mine 1/4 full so had to immediately get gas nearby. However they were upfront about this and only expected the return to be 1/4 full at the end of my trip.

Cruise America has business practices that should not be allowed within this country. They take a $500 deposit and then miraculously there are surcharges and fees that take up nearly that entire amount. And you have no way of arguing them because they already have your money and their customer service is non-existent. I had the absolute worst experience renting an RV that I have had on vacation ever. The RV I had was new but it was like driving a wooden wheeled car across railroad tracks for 700 miles. Then on top of that, they charged me for 2 days over what I used the RV for because we returned it early because it was such a horrendous experience. So they could double dip and rent it out again and make money on the same days I was not getting refunded for. they charges "housekeeping" fees of $350 even thought my wife and I wiped down that entire RV before turning it in. When asked for proof of what was dirty, there only response was to give us $150 certificate to be used within the next 2 years. I would never use it because I would never rent an RV. And if I did, I would not do it through them. It took me 2 weeks just to get a response form their billing department. The just over another week before I got their response that they will not be refunding me anything. Do yourself a favor and rent an SUV or something and pitch a tent in some haunted woods. Trust me you will have a better experience and cheaper because you will not have them scam your deposit out of you. I will never do business with them ever again and recommend anyone thinking about it to think of alternative ways to travel for your vacation.

TL;DR I would really not recommend using them. First you should note they provide the most basic of units; our unit did not even had Bluetooth so we could hear the GPS. Two hours into our trip, the left mirror broke, meaning, it started spinning on it's access with no way to secure it. Have you ever tried driving a huge 30 foot truck with no way on knowing what is happening on your left? I would recommend against it. I called roadside assistance and requested help, they would not send someone over despite the risk to my family; I had to drive over 40 miles to a small town and had to fix my mirror with duct tape. The next day I called and asked for a replacement unit, they asked me to wait 30 minutes (without leaving the camp) and did not call me back, I called again, they asked for 15 mote minutes, and did to call back; this went on for 4 hours, finely at 11 am, I decided I will not wait anymore and started driving; they never called back. I called the next day asking for a manager, they promised one will get back to, it never happened. A few other thigs - The furnace did not work, try to imagine a family of 5 in Oregon at night, 35F / 2C without heating. Milledge was terrible, 15 Gallons per 100 miles The truck itself was so loud, it was almost impossible to talk in it when you drive. All and all, very far from a pleasant experience for a trip that we planned for two years, saved our money to for years and for a unit that cost thousands.

I had a great experience renting from this place. Hassle free check in and check out process. They were nice in letting go of the half of propane even though I was wrong in not refilling it and did not know where to look for it. Vehicle condition was decent and staff was friendly about miss on my part. Will def rent again.

I was not happy with my Cruise America rental. So many things went wrong it was kind of ridiculous! I made many calls to travel assistance. This was my third rental in the past three years. The previous rentals were mostly trouble free. I don't know what's happening over there, but things have seriously gone downhill. First, the water ran out on Day 2. When I called assistance to find out why air instead of water was coming out the tap, he said the tank was dry. He asked if I had checked the gauges and I had not. When I picked up the camper, the agent told me the gas was full and the LP gas was 3/4 full. I don't think she mentioned water. But why on earth would you rent a camper with gas and propane and almost no water AND NOT INFORM THE RENTER? I had told the agent I was going off the grid and would not have access to gas, propane, electricity or water. Not only that, there is probably a hose on the Cruise America property; filling the water tank would be the simplest thing to do! Luckily, I was able to backtrack a bit before I left civilization and fill it up, but this created a several hour delay in my trip. When I checked the water gauge I also looked at the others. I was alarmed to see that the black and grey water tanks read as full, which could not be true since this was still Day 2 of my trip. Online I saw several articles explaining how untrustworthy those two gauges are so I decided they were wrong. By this time it was too late to seek out a dump station. For the next few days I used water mainly to wash dishes. On day four, I took my first shower and the grey water backed up into the shower stall. Let me remind you that I am one person on the fourth day of my trip. The agent made a show of pointing to the open sewage cap to prove the tanks were empty but that was obviously not even CLOSE to being true. That day and the next day I had to let my dirty dishes pile up in the sink. And of course I couldn't take another shower. I was camping in an environmentally sensitive area where it's not allowed to dump any kind of unclean water. The following day I went to find dump facilities on my way to another primitive campground. Again, this added an unnecessary delay and detour from my planned trip since I should not have had to dump the tanks until I got back to town to return the camper. Unfortunately, for the last 2.5 hours of the drive there, a disgusting sewage smell permeated the camper, making the drive quite unpleasant. But we're not done yet! On the last day of my trip, the refrigerator failed. The indicator showed the letters F and A. The travel assistance agent had no idea what that meant. But I figured it out since the ice in the freezer was half melted. He instructed me to cycle the refrigerator off and on five times. This did not work. I had decided to end my trip early for several reasons, and this capped it off. I didn't want all the food in the fridge to spoil. As it was, I did lose a few items. And I developed a bad taste in my mouth for this camper experience. When I returned the camper, I told the agent how unhappy I was and that I wanted 50% off my entire rental as compensation. He said he could offer $500 off. When I got home, I read the contract again and realized I did not get my $300 edited deposit back! I filled out their online form twice, emailed them directly and sent them a physical letter via snail mail and have received absolutely zero response. I've filed a BBB complaint against them.

Cruise America provided a masterclass in how to handle customer service. Problems and incidents are periodically bound to happen but I simply cannot state strongly enough how well their senior leadership handled the issue. In today's world where everything is automated call centers - Cruise America provided me and my family with extremely dedicated, diligent human support. Sure - the RV is great. Equipment worked perfectly, driving was smooth, trip was amazing. But the thing that really made this 5 star was the customer service when we ran into self inflicted issues. Kudos to you, Michael - and kudos to Cruise America for providing top notch vacation time for our family.

Privately owned vehicle (POV) mileage reimbursement rates

GSA has adjusted all POV mileage reimbursement rates effective January 1, 2024.

* Airplane nautical miles (NMs) should be converted into statute miles (SMs) or regular miles when submitting a voucher using the formula (1 NM equals 1.15077945 SMs).

For calculating the mileage difference between airports, please visit the U.S. Department of Transportation's Inter-Airport Distance website.

Traveler reimbursement is based on the location of the work activities and not the accommodations, unless lodging is not available at the work activity, then the agency may authorize the rate where lodging is obtained.

Unless otherwise specified, the per diem locality is defined as "all locations within, or entirely surrounded by, the corporate limits of the key city, including independent entities located within those boundaries."

Per diem localities with county definitions shall include "all locations within, or entirely surrounded by, the corporate limits of the key city as well as the boundaries of the listed counties, including independent entities located within the boundaries of the key city and the listed counties (unless otherwise listed separately)."

When a military installation or Government - related facility(whether or not specifically named) is located partially within more than one city or county boundary, the applicable per diem rate for the entire installation or facility is the higher of the rates which apply to the cities and / or counties, even though part(s) of such activities may be located outside the defined per diem locality.

AAA’s Top 10 tips for saving money on gas.

• Maintain car care – Take your vehicle in for a bumper-to-bumper ‘health check’ to make sure it is running at peak fuel efficiency.
• Adjust your driving behaviors – Avoid ‘jack rabbit’ stops and starts and slow down. Speeding uses more fuel. Best fuel efficiency is around 50-60 mph.
• Limit your time behind the wheel – Consider consolidating errands to make fewer trips.
• Use the right gas – AAA research shows that Americans waste billions of dollars each year ‘treating’ their vehicles to premium gas with no benefit whatsoever. Only use the octane recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.
• Make sure your tires are properly inflated – Tires that are underinflated increase drag, using more fuel.
• Shop around – Gas pricing can vary dramatically corner to corner, county to county. Use the AAA app or the AAA Fuel Finder to locate the least expensive gas near you.
• Map it out – As you make plans for that Great American Road Trip, use the AAA Gas Cost Calculator to determine your fuel costs so you can budget accordingly.
• Sign up for the AAA Shell Rewards program – Save 30 cents/gallon on your first fill-up and 5 cents a gallon after that using the AAA Shell Fuel Rewards program.
• Fill up, don’t break down – In recent months, ACA has noticed an increase in ‘out of fuel’ calls across most of our footprint. As painful as the pump price might be, running out of gas can be even more costly and also put you and your passengers at unnecessary risk.
• Rethink your commute – Consider walking, biking, carpooling or using mass transit when possible. Take advantage of the opportunity to work from home.

Finding the cheapest gas prices isn't the only way to save money on gas. There are other great ways to make sure you're using as little gasoline as possible.

Be sure your car is properly maintained. A faulty oxygen sensor in your engine can wipe out 40% of your fuel economy. After a proper tune-up, drivers see an average of 4% increases in fuel efficiency, according to the US Department of Energy. Want some help with that? Schedule an appointment at a AAA Car Center center to get a thorough checkout. Inflate your car tires to the maximum safe limit specified by your vehicle manufacturer. Underinflated car tires may provide a slightly more smooth ride, but at the expense of lower fuel efficiency. For every 1 PSI under the recommended maximum limit, you lose 0.2% of your gas mileage. If your tires will support 38 PSI and you're riding around at 28 PSI, you could be losing 2% of your gas mileage. Get the correct motor oil. The wrong motor oil can reduce gas mileage and gas savings by 1-2%, like using 10W-30 motor oil in an engine designed to use 5W-30 or 5W-30 in an engine designed for 5W-20. Be sure to look for motor oil that says "Energy Conserving" on the API performance symbol; energy-conserving motor oil will help engine performance.
