Tears for Fears Announce 2023 North American Tour

By Jazz Monroe

Tears for Fears Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith

Tears for Fears are heading out on a summer tour of North America. The Tipping Point Tour Part II kicks off in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on June 23, and wraps up six weeks later in Los Angeles. Cold War Kids will support on all dates.

Tears for Fears returned in 2021, announcing The Tipping Point —their first album in 17 years—and explaining that “before everything went so right with this album, everything first had to go wrong. It took years, but something happens when we put our heads together.” They began touring the record last year, playing shows with Alison Moyet and Garbage.

Tears for Fears Announce Summer 2023 North American Tour

Tears for Fears have announced a summer 2023 North American tour in support of their 2022 album  The Tipping Point .

The Tipping Point Tour Part II will begin on June 23 in Atlantic City, N.J., and conclude on Aug. 2 in Los Angeles. Cold War Kids will open the entire 22-date trek.

Tickets go on sale to the general public this Friday. You can find more information at Ticketmaster and see the full list of tour dates below.

The Tipping Point marked Tears for Fears' first album since 2004's  Everybody Loves a Happy Ending . Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith tried collaborating with numerous other songwriters — a process they likened to "speed dating" — before scrapping much of the material and starting fresh in 2020.

"Going through the process of finding out what it was we didn't want to do, we ended up finding out what we did want to do," Smith told UCR last year. "We got together in 2020 and started fresh. We kept half of the songs and worked them to a certain degree and wrote half of the album as new songs. [All of that] became The Tipping Point , which we're both incredibly happy with."

ABOUT TEARS FOR FEARS

Tears For Fears – Roland Orzabal (vocals, guitar, keyboards) and Curt Smith (vocals, bass, keyboards) formed in Bath, England 1981.  With 30 million albums sold worldwide, performing to countless sold-out audiences, and winning various awards, the band represent an inimitable intersection of pop palatability, clever and cognisant lyricism, guitar bombast, and new wave innovation. Their 1983 debut The Hurting yielded anthems such as “Mad World,” “Change,” and “Pale Shelter,” reaching RIAA Gold status in the United States. 1985’s Songs from the Big Chair became a watershed moment for the group and music at large. Boasting the signature BRIT Award-winning “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” “Shout,” “Head over Heels,” “Mothers Talk” and “I Believe (A Soulful Re-Recording),” it went quintuple-platinum and captured #1 on the Billboard Top 200. Slant dubbed it one of, “The Best Albums of the 1980s,” it was featured in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, and Consequence of Sound awarded it a rare A+ rating in a 20-year retrospective.1989’s Seeds of Love proved to be Orzabal and Smith’s last collaboration together until Everybody Loves A Happy Ending in 2004, which rekindled the creative fire between them. The band engaged in a three-year touring whirlwind across North America, Japan, South Korea, Manila, and South America beginning in 2010.

2013 saw them return with their first recorded music in a decade: a cover of Arcade Fire’s “Ready to Start.” The band returned once more in 2017 with the Rule The World best of collection, which once more catapulted the band back to the upper echelon of the UK album charts. The duo’s DNA remains embedded within three generations of artists on both subtle and overt levels. Quietly casting a shadow over rock, hip-hop, electronic dance music, indie, and beyond, The Weeknd infused “Pale Shelter” into Starboy’s “Secrets,” David Guetta sampled “Change” for “Always,” and Drake utilized “Ideas as Opiates” as the foundation for “Lust For Life,” while Ally Brooke Hernandez, Adam Lambert, and Gary Jules recorded popular covers of “Mad World” and Disturbed took on “Shout,” and that’s only to name a few. Lorde cut a haunting cover of “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” for the Soundtrack of the blockbuster The Hunger Games – Catching Fire, which Tears For Fears gleefully would use as intro music live and thus bring everything full circle.

Meanwhile, classic songs figure prominently everywhere from The Wire and Donnie Darko to Straight Outta Compton and Mr. Robot. Long before they became a cultural cornerstone Tears For Fears simply consisted of two school friends growing up in Bath, Somerset UK.

With the release of their first album in almost 20 years The Tipping Point in 2022, the 40th anniversary of The Hurting and with more touring on the horizon, Orzabal and Smith remain as loud as ever, while yet another generation gets ready to “Shout” with them all over again.

Tears For Fears Announces 2023 North American ‘The Tipping Point Tour Part II’

tears for fears tour portland

Today, iconic British duo, Tears For Fears, have announced their North American 2023 summer tour — The Tipping Point Tour Part II – with special guest Cold War Kids. Produced by Live Nation, the 22-city tour kicks off on June 23 at Hard Rock Live at Etess Arena in Atlantic City, NJ making stops across North America in New York, Toronto, Houston, Seattle, and more before wrapping up in Los Angeles, CA at the Hollywood Bowl on August 2.

ears For Fears – Roland Orzabal (vocals, guitar, keyboards) and Curt Smith (vocals, bass, keyboards) formed in Bath, England 1981.

Tears For Fears

tears for fears tour portland

The following description comes from the event organizer.

One of music's most impactful, sometimes tense and yet curiously enduring partnerships, Tears For Fears arrived together at "The Tipping Point" - the group's ambitious, accomplished and surprising first new studio album in decades. Yet, Tears For Fears has hardly been absent from the road, from our airwaves or from our hearts and minds. Their recordings have been sampled by everyone from The Weeknd to David Guetta, and covered by artists ranging from Lorde to Adam Lambert to Disturbed. The timeless, widescreen songs of Tears For Fears appeared in many renowned films like "Donnie Darko" and "Straight Outta Compton." At long last, Tears For Fears find themselves back in peak form at "The Tipping Point," an inspired song cycle that speaks powerfully and artfully to our present tense and time.

What to Eat and Drink at the Moda Center, Home of the Portland Trail Blazers

Portland’s NBA arena and concert venue serves more than the standard popcorn and beer — though you’ll find plenty of that, too

Moda Center , the arena and venue at the heart of Portland’s Rose Quarter, draws around 1.5 million visitors each year for Trail Blazers games, comedy shows, and concerts — from Mitski to Blink-182 . And as a Portland-based venue, its concessions are no afterthought: Oregon-based distillers, breweries, and cideries operate bars throughout the space, and several Portland-based chains sling slices, sandwiches, and ice cream scoops to snag during halftime.

Below, we break down the food and drink most worth the wait within the arena; for options before or after a visit to Moda, this map may be helpful . Something to note: Moda concession stands are always open during Blazer games, but some concession stands close on other event days, depending on attendance. And for a full rundown of the concessions available, check out the Moda concessions website .

A hand holds a plate with a Bae’s fried chicken sandwich on it in Portland, Oregon.

Where to Eat

This Portland-born fried chicken brand from Super Bowl regular Ndamukong Suh and local restaurateur Micah Camden operates a Moda Center location, serving fried chicken sandwiches, strips, and waffle fries. The chicken arrives tossed in a variety of sauces — the sweet and bright peach barbecue, Nashville hot — though the lemon pepper or Bae’s Buffalo work well on the chicken sandwiches, easiest to eat in a stadium seat. Where it is: Section 119

Chef Rick Gencarelli’s celebrated sandwich shop operates a tight menu of its greatest hits at Moda, including the the Bronx Bomber (sort of like an Italian cheesesteak), Korean pork shoulder, and the Cubano. The Korean pork shoulder sandwich has been a favorite for years, topped with house-made kimchi, chile mayo, and cilantro. Where it is: Section 105

Cha Cha Cha

This chain of Portland Mexican restaurants operates locations all over Moda, serving its standard array of burritos, nachos, and quesadillas. The little touches here make the difference: The chips in the nachos are house-made, for instance. Where it is: Sections 114, 214, and 332

Plum Tasty may be the best bet for visitors hoping to find a bowl or salad that can accommodate dietary restrictions. The menu includes a number of gluten-free and vegan-friendly options; past options have included tahini-kale slaw with tamari portobello mushrooms, quinoa salads with fennel and goat cheese, and sweet potato-cauliflower bowls with black rice and chickpeas. Where it is: Section 107

Ranch Pizza

Portland chain Ranch Pizza is a favorite for thick slabs of airy square pies, with cheesy edges and a generous layer of toppings. Ranch’s stand is on the club level, which means only ticket holders on that level can access the stand; however, Ranch pizzas are also available via the “in-seat menu,” which is accessible to 100-level ticket holders and folks with floor seats. Pies come in varieties like cheese, pepperoni, and the combo, with pepperoni, mixed olives, and pepperoncini. Where it is: Section 202

Another Suh-Camden joint, Kinnamons specializes in inventive flavors of gooey, soft cinnamon rolls — though calling them “cinnamon” rolls may be misleading. Flavors here include options like raspberry pistachio, maple bacon, and blueberry crumble, though yes, visitors will be able to find a classic cinnamon roll with cream cheese frosting on the menu. Where it is: Section 104

Fifty Licks

One of Portland’s most beloved ice cream brands, Fifty Licks operates an ice cream stand on the club level of Moda, which means it’s typically set aside for season ticket holders. Those who can access Fifty Licks can choose from flavors like mango sticky rice, mocha mud pie, and lavender salted caramel, plus stalwarts like chocolate and vanilla. Fifty Licks’ Oregon strawberry is hard to beat, eating almost like a sorbet thanks to its hefty serving of berries. Where it is: Section 202

The Moda Center taproom from 10 Barrel.

Where to Drink

This Oregon cider company sources Pacific Northwestern-grown apples for its line of hard ciders, primarily from Hood River and Washington’s Yakima Valley. Many of the ciders use local fruit for specific flavors, like Oregon blackberries, while others incorporate things like dragonfruit and pomegranate. Where it is: 304

Pendleton Whisky Cart and Bar

Pendleton whiskies appear all over the Moda Center — at two bar carts, plus a club-level cocktail bar with hardwood decor. Pendleton uses Mt. Hood glacial water for its whiskey, which all of these locations serve both neat and in various cocktails. Where it is: Carts are located at section 104 and 116, while the full bar is near section 230.

Schonely’s 10 Barrel Taproom

Outside section 101 on the west side of the concourse, this 240-seat brewpub pours beer from Central Oregon’s award-winning 10 Barrel Brewing at two separate bars within the space. The taproom is home to 22 flat-screen TVs for watching the pre-game show, and also offers a full food menu for those who want to eat before the game starts. Where it is: Section 101
