Background [ ]

On May 6, 2018, Grande hinted at a tour for her then-upcoming fourth studio album Sweetener via her official Twitter account. Three months later, she announced that there were plans for a tour, stating that her team were "working on it all now". Grande embarked on a promotional concert tour for Sweetener , the Sweetener Sessions , which began on August 20, 2018, in New York City and ended on September 4, 2018, in London, United Kingdom. Grande announced the title of the tour as the "Sweetener World Tour" on October 24, 2018, announcing its North American dates a day later.

The first leg of the tour had 50 shows across North America and visited 45 cities, beginning on March 18, 2019, in Albany, and concluding on August 4, 2019, at Lollapalooza . On November 5, 2018, tickets were opened to the general public, and Grande announced Normani and Social House as her opening acts. On December 10, 2018, due to popular demand, second shows were added in Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Brooklyn, New York City, Washington, D.C., Boston, Philadelphia, and Toronto. On December 14, 2018, Grande announced the European dates for the tour. A special show was being planned in Manchester. The second leg of the tour had 30 shows and visited 19 cities across Europe, beginning on August 17, 2019, in London and concluding on October 16, 2019, in London. On March 5, 2019, Grande announced that Ella Mai would be the opening act for the European leg of the tour.

On January 14, 2019, the shows in Omaha and Raleigh were cancelled due to Grande headlining the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on April 14 and April 21, 2019, and a new show was added in Las Vegas. On May 28, 2019, the shows in Tampa and Orlando were cancelled and rescheduled due to illness. On June 11, 2019, due to popular demand, additional shows were added in London. On August 9, 2019, the first show in Hamburg and the show in Prague were rescheduled, and the show in Kraków was cancelled.

On June 20, 2019, Grande announced another North American leg of the tour. The third leg of the tour visited 18 cities and had 20 shows across the United States, including the rescheduled Tampa and Orlando shows, beginning on November 9, 2019, in Uniondale and concluding on December 22, 2019, in Inglewood.

Grande announced she would be partnering with nonprofit voter registration group HeadCount to register new voters ahead of the 2020 presidential election in March via Instagram. She encouraged fans to "use your voice and get your 'thank u, next gen' sticker." In July, it was reported that HeadCount registered twice as many voters in partnership with Grande than any other tour over the last three years and that the Sweetener World Tour was the most successful artist tour for voter registration HeadCount has seen since 2008. In December, it was announced that the tour broke the organization's all-time record, with 33,381 voter registrations and actions.

  • " imagine " was supposed to be on the setlist, but it was removed. [2]
  • “ Let Me Love You ” & " Blazed ” were contender’s to be on the setlist as the titles was seen in a video from Ariana’s instagram story with Brian & Scott choosing songs for the setlist.
  • Uncomfortable to perform the song, " ghostin " was removed from the setlist.
  • It was later learned that Ariana had angina while on tour. While it it didn't impact her vocals too harshly, she still eventually had to cancel a few shows.
  • This is Grande's only world tour not to have any shows in Asia and Latin America.
  • This is Grande's longest tour, spanning over 9 months.
  • This is Grande's most successful tour, earning over $146.6 million dollars ($167.8 million in 2022 dollars).
  • Various celebrities, including Harry Styles, Millie Bobby Brown , Shangela , Billie Eilish , Jungkook , and Justin Bieber , attended the tour.
  • In total, more than 1.3M tickets were sold.
  • The tour broke HeadCount 's all-time registration record, with 33,381 voter registrations.

Stage design [ ]

The stage of the Sweetener World Tour is by far Grande's most innovative and unique stage design. The stage is inspired by astrology as the entire concept of the stage is around a giant diorama of the moon hanging from the ceiling. Similarly to the Dangerous Woman Tour (2017), projection was used for the visuals, lighting the entirely of the white stage, creating illusions of water flowing down the stage, for example. The main screen is a rounded rectangle with a half sphere in the middle. The central sphere featured visuals and lighting effects behind it. The catwalk was reimagined as a U-shape with two pits and a central B stage that Grande accesses to perform under the inflatable moon suspended from the ceiling. The stage also features a central lift through which Grande opens the show with a recreation of The Last Supper performing " God is a woman ". The lift is also used for the pink " 7 rings " car. During the song, Grande and her dancers would spraypaint the car, usually writing the name of the current city they are in on it. They would also throw custom-made pink dollar bills, similar to the "greedy dollars" from the DWT into the crowd.

Live album [ ]

A live album documenting the first and second legs of the tour entitled k bye for now (swt live) was released on December 23, 2019. All of its tracks were produced by Grande and Natural. The album reached number 79 on the Billboard 200. On June 12, 2021, CD and vinyl versions of the album were released for Record Store Day.

Ariana dropped her last album Sweetener in August of this year, but the talented singer is already hard at work on her next album. Ariana has been teasing the project that fans have affectionately dubbed AG5, and has promised the album will drop very soon.

So, when can fans expect from AG5? What has Ariana said about it? And who is she working with for this for the upcoming release? Here's everything we know so far about Ariana Grande's AG5.

When is thank u, next coming? Ariana Grande's fifth album release date

While there is no official release date set for thank u, next , Ariana Grande has promised that the album will arrive before the year is out. When Ariana and Pete Davidson were on a recent outing, a paparazzo asked the singer if fans could expect the album before the end of the year, to which she replied, "yes!"

Some fans have speculated that she was joking, however, if she is not, her response means fans will have a new Ariana release between October and December.

Some fans have expressed the feeling that Ariana's new "era" is coming very quickly after Sweetener , however, the singer expanded on her current mind set in a series of tweets.

it ain’t ova ! i don’t really like “era’s”. i jus wanna make music and drop it whenever and perform it. i don’t want to conform to the like ... ‘routine’ or like ‘formula’ anymore. i love music i ain’t waiting another 2 years to drop it. i want to share it w u when it’s freshhh — Ariana Grande (@ArianaGrande) October 9, 2018

"I don’t want to conform to the like ... ‘routine’ or like ‘formula’ anymore. i love music i ain’t waiting another 2 years to drop it," she wrote on Twitter.

Ariana has shared more than a few Instagram stories and photos of herself in the studio, likely meaning that production and writing for the release is well under way. Ariana has been in the studio frequently in the month of October and regularly shares social media updates from her sessions. After a long wait, Ari has now put us out of our misery and confirmed that the "thank u, next" release date is Feb 8 – *waits patiently with debit card ready.*

What will thank u, next sound like?

Ariana has shared a snippet of a new song with the lyrics "tell me how good it feels to be needed." It appears to be a song she's worked on with frequent collaborator, Tommy Brown.

Tommy has worked on all of Ariana's albums, including three songs from Ari's most recent album, Sweetener-- "better off". "goodnight n go", and "pete davidson".

Lyrics from the Ariana Grande studio snippet

Passionate but I don't give no fucks

I admit that i'm a little messed up

But I can hide it when I'm all dressed up

I'm obsessed but I love too hard

Good at overthinking with my heart

How you even think it got this far

I can be needy

Way too damn needy

Tell me how good it feels to be needed

Another, shorter snippet of music was shared via Tommy Brown's Instagram stories.

thank u, next tracklist and song titles.

If you look beyond the celebrity cameos and '00s movie references in the 'thank u, next' video, there's some clues that reveal what's coming up on Ari's tracklist for her new album. Ariana hinted we have a least three songs on the way – 7 Rings, Imagine and Needy. Clever fans first spotted the phrase "7 Rings" on the license plate of Ari's car as she pulled up to Harvard during the Legally Blonde segment of the music video. Ariana confirmed that they were correct about the song title and opened up about the message behind track on Twitter.

well ............. ‘twas a pretty rough day in nyc. my friends took me to tiffany’s. we had too much champagne. i bought us all rings. 💍 it was very insane and funny. & on the way back to the stu njomza was like ‘bitch, this gotta be a song lol’. so we wrote it that afternoon. https://t.co/CoczmPj1Fo — Ariana Grande (@ArianaGrande) December 1, 2018
me, vic, courtney, alexa, tayla, njomza, kaydence (and my mom and nonna so technically nine but they got theirs after song was done) https://t.co/y6G9HGQTh4 — Ariana Grande (@ArianaGrande) December 1, 2018

Now imagine having a rough day and going to Tiffany's to perk you up… sadly, can't relate. Of course, "7 Rings" isn't the only song that will be included in her next album. Ari wore a tank top bearing the phrase "A Little Bit Needy", during the Mean Girls segment of her music video. Now, she had made reference to "Needy" on Twitter back in October, while she also hinted at the song title in her "Breathin'" video. The other track that Ariana teased in 'thank u, next' is "Imagine." The song title appeared in the Bring It On part of the video, where it was written on a building in the background of the football game. "Imagine" also appeared in the "Breathin'" video too and based on Ariana's tweets, it seems as if she'll be dropping "Imagine" before "7 Rings" and "Needy".

i would really like u to hear that next https://t.co/CNJQbEjDwc — Ariana Grande (@ArianaGrande) December 1, 2018

However, there's even more musical magic to come. Ariana shared a photo to her Instagram stories hinting that she had written 9 songs in three days. Fans are guessing that there will be more than 9 songs on the release so we know there's more.

Ariana Grande AG5

And now she's just revealed the entire "thank u, next" tracklist and the internet is pretty shook. The album will consist of 12 songs in total, including "7 rings," "thank u, next," and "imagine," which have already been released. However, perhaps the most savage and shocking song title, has to be the last track on the album, "break up with you girlfriend, i'm bored".

Is AG5 a Christmas album?

Fans have long hoped that Ariana would do another Christmas album, following 2015's Christmas & Chill . It seems that fans will have to wait a bit longer, though. Ariana has seemingly confirmed that she is NOT working on a Christmas album at the moment.

Is Ariana Grande doing a joint Sweetener + thank u, next tour?

Everyone go see their bookies because a joint Sweetener + thank u, next situation seems very likely. Ariana has urged fans to be "patient" but also has encouraged some fan concepts about the tour.

Ariana grande twitter response

Ariana seemingly confirmed to a fan that she would soon announce US tour dates followed by European tour dates a little later. However, there is virtually no chance Ariana is touring before 2019.

“thank u, next”

Ariana Grande “Thank U Next”

Best New Track

By Quinn Moreland

Pop/R&B

November 5, 2018

Late Saturday night, Ariana Grande offered yet another reminder that she is the ponytailed patron saint of grace, light, and sass. On “ thank u, next ,” the track she released that night, she doesn’t stir the pot about her recent breakup, as the common media narrative might expect; instead she finds the value in letting go. It’s a generosity rarely spotted these days, when it is so much more tempting to clap back with vinegar instead of honey—and after Grande’s rollercoaster of a year, few would blame her for embracing full-on “ Shout Out to My Ex ”-style spite. But “thank u, next,” despite its kiss-off title, is not about throwing shade or dragging her exes. It’s “jus love, gratitude, acceptance, honesty, forgiveness … and growth,” as Grande clarified in a tweet .

Grande’s kind assessment of the past begins immediately with a run through her romantic timeline, including her highly public relationship with Big Sean and engagement to Pete Davidson , concluding with a devastating ode to the late Mac Miller . These men, with all their imperfections, have shaped her for the better, and now she has enough perspective to thank them. She does so with an already iconic farewell over a subtle, twinkling beat: “Thank you, next/I’m so fuckin’ grateful for my ex.” Then, after demonstrating her newfound serenity, Grande almost gives fans (and TMZ) a conniption when she teases that she’s met someone new, but then reveals that the love she’s found is with herself: “She taught me love/She taught me patience/How she handles pain/That shit’s amazing.” Much like the “one girl swaying alone” twist in Lorde ’s “ Liability ,” it’s an eloquent display of inner strength and incisive self-awareness; “thank u, next” embraces a rare mindset that perhaps not so many people, let alone famous pop stars, grant to their exes. The high road might not be the easiest path, but Grande offers to lead us there by her own example.

The Personal Meaning Behind Ariana Grande’s “Thank U, Next”

by Alex Hopper January 25, 2023, 12:58 pm

In 2019, Ariana Grande had much of the world dismissing their problems with the phrase “thank u, next.” Before the song was released, the pop princess had wrapped up a whirlwind few years full of engagements, break-ups, a bombing at one of her concerts, and the death of her ex-boyfriend Mac Miller. With her personal life becoming a point of public discussion, her ability to chalk all of life’s pitfalls up to a learning experience was an inspiring feat.

Videos by American Songwriter

“Thank U, Next” is mostly concerned with her past relationships. Having been in the entertainment industry since she was a teen, her fans have been more than privy to her romantic attachments. She doesn’t beat around the bush in the song, name-dropping her famous exes and explaining why their relationship went awry.

We’re breaking down the meaning behind the lyrics to this Grande staple. Take the trip with us, below.

Behind The Lyrics

Thought I’d end up with Sean But he wasn’t a match Wrote some songs about Ricky Now I listen and laugh Even almost got married And for Pete, I’m so thankful Wish I could say, “Thank you” to Malcolm ‘Cause he was an angel

Grande takes us through a sort of relationship timeline in the opening verse of “Thank U, Next.”

Kicking things off with Big Sean, Grande dated the rapper for a few months around 2014. Given their status in the music industry, their relationship was an oft-talked-about topic in the rumor mill. They collaborated on a number of tracks, including Grande’s “Right There” and “Best Mistake.”

Next, she references her relationship with one of her backup dancers, Ricky Alvarez. Grande reportedly wrote the song “Moonlight” about Alvarez, which is represented by the line wrote some songs about Ricky . Amid her Dangerous Woman Tour , she sang the lulling ballad while reaching out to Alvarez who stood at the side of the stage.

Former SNL cast member Pete Davidson and Grande got engaged after a few months of knowing one another. The stint was over as quickly as it started but, Grande makes it known she doesn’t regret it by thanking Davidson in the song, for their time together.

While both Sean and Alvarez didn’t say much about the name-drop following the song’s release, Davidson made light of the song in an SNL promo . Grande responded in a since-deleted tweet saying, “for somebody who claims to hate relevancy u sure love clinging to it huh.”

Lastly she thanks the late Mac Miller, who she started dating in 2016, but had been friends with for years prior. The pair first collaborated on Grande’s single, “The Way.” Miller died of an overdose in 2018.

After laying out her relationship timeline, she lets the listener know what the overarching idea of the song is. She aims to put her “failed” relationships into perspective, by thanking them for what they gave her. Even though they aren’t together anymore, she has gleaned valuable life lessons from them: love, patience, and pain.

One taught me love One taught me patience And one taught me pain Now, I’m so amazing Say I’ve loved and I’ve lost But that’s not what I see So, look what I got Look at what you taught me And for that, I say

“No drags…. no shade….. jus love, gratitude, acceptance, honesty, forgiveness … and growth,” Grande wrote on Twitter following the song’s release.

Music Video

The accompanying music video is just as splashy as the song. Chock full of celebrity cameos and pop culture references, the video certainly befits such an empowering song.

Grande, a self-professed ’00s rom-com lover, takes over the lead role in a number of famous films—namely, Mean Girls , Legally Blonde , Bring It On and 13 Going on 30 . She recreates a number of classic scenes from each movie alongside a cast of her friends. Elsewhere the likes of Kris Jenner, Jennifer Coolidge, and Troye Sivan pop up as supporting characters.

Some Albums Take Years. Ariana Grande Made ‘Thank U, Next’ in 2 Weeks

By Elias Leight

Elias Leight

Two weeks ago, the singer-songwriter Victoria Monét made a trip to Disneyland with her friend and longtime collaborator Ariana Grande . “ We go often, and there are always fans,” Monét says. “But this particular time, she was [like] Michael Jackson. Security was like, ‘no pictures please, thank you,’ and a fan said, ‘thank u, next'” — quoting Grande’s recent Number One single. “People were losing their minds.”

Right now, Grande is as close as most stars get to walking on water: Only two other singers in history, Mariah Carey and Drake, have released consecutive Number One singles in the lead-up to an album, according to Billboard . Grande released Thank U, Next on Friday, and the singer will likely set a personal-best for first-week sales even though this album comes less than six months after her last Number One album,  Sweetener . Improbably, Thank U, Next also sounds both more urgent and more varied than its predecessor.

This is all the more remarkable considering that  Thank U, Next almost didn’t happen. Following the tragic death of Grande’s ex-boyfriend, the rapper Mac Miller, in September 2018, “there was a point where Ariana didn’t want to do anything,” Monét says. The songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jameel Roberts was scheduled to go into the studio with Grande to work on the Sweetener follow-up. “When we heard that [Miller died] we weren’t sure those sessions were gonna still be on,” he says.

“She wasn’t gonna tour,” Monét acknowledges. “It was like, ‘the next few months are cancelled, this is really hard for me, I don’t wanna move.'”

But roughly two weeks after Grande thought about cancelling work, the singer flew to New York to write with another pair of longtime collaborators, Max Martin and Savan Kotecha. Monét flew out not long after. “It goes without saying that it was a very trying time, but music naturally is a healing mechanism,” explains Monét, who co-wrote six tracks on Thank U, Next . “That’s what we were holding on to — along with some champagne glasses.”

“I was still grieving the loss of one of my best friends,” adds Njomza Vitia, a co-writer on both “Thank U, Next” and “7 Rings,” and also the first artist to release music through Miller’s label Remember Music. “It was a good distraction to be in that space [the studio].”

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

In New York, Grande and company were wildly productive . “The first week we already had nine songs or so,” Monét says. “Then we spent the next week cleaning them up, adding more things, doing production, cutting a few more songs.”

The resulting album stands out from the rest of Grande’s catalog. “You’re used to hearing her singing pop records, maybe a soul-based record,” Roberts explains. “But some of these are really different. She’s stretching.”

Some of those changes are structural. Most modern big-budget albums, including  Sweetener , are front-loaded or fat in the middle before tapering off. But Thank U, Next starts quietly, with a trio of ballads, and ends with thunderstorms: “Thank U, Next” and “7 Rings,” steroidal streaming hits, plus “Break up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored,” which is both mischievous and hammering. Grande has never constructed an album like this before.

Structural idiosyncrasies extend to individual tracks as well. Roberts, who co-wrote “Imagine” and “In My Head” and played instruments, including Alicia Keys’ Fender Rhodes, on “Fake Smile,” expressed surprise that Grande decided to record “Imagine. “It’s in triple meter — you don’t get a lot of those records anymore, especially for a pop singer,” he explains. But Grande made a 6/8 track the first thing you hear on Thank U, Next . “The ‘In My Head’ record, if you put it on, the first thing you hear [a recorded voicemail and a vicious rap beat with a distended bass line], I would never think, ‘this is an Ariana record,'” Roberts continues. “Even on ‘Imagine,’ when she’s singing the whistle tones on the end — she’s growing.”

Then there’s “NASA:” When it comes to capturing relationships, pop tends to sort them into the good vs. the bad, but this track captures a hyper-specific romantic middle zone, using the silly (space-exploration metaphors) to convey the serious (please-don’t-come-over-tonight-but-I-still-like-you). Monét, who started writing the melodies for “NASA” with Tayla Parx, explains the mindset: “We’re not ending this, and you didn’t do anything wrong, it’s just that there is a specific bubble that I’d like to maintain tonight or today on my own. It’s just saying something different, something women need to hear.”

Thank U, Next is also the rare Event Album to be made by a lot of women. Nine of the album’s 12 songs have two or more female writers, which is a first on a Grande project. (Technically another track, “Break up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored,” has two female writers too, but Kandi Buruss is credited because she co-wrote the old ‘NSync track Grande samples.) For comparison’s sake, less than a quarter of the 36 writers up for a Record of the Year Grammy on Sunday are women.

“A lot of [Grande’s] songs have been male-driven [in terms of her co-writers], but a lot of these songs really have the female perspective — that’s notable,” says Denisia Andrews, a member of the writer-producer duo Nova Wav with Brittany “Chi” Coney . “Chi and I produce, and we were able to add production on the record we worked on [‘In My Head’] as well.”

Ariana Grande Releases 'Thank U, Next' Album, Capping a Can’t-Miss Run

Ariana grande is heading back to number one and she's bringing 'nsync with her, ariana grande skipping grammys because producer 'stifled' her creativity.

The close connections between Grande and many of her collaborators — she’s worked with Monét, for example, on every one of her albums — also served as a shield when the circumstances preceding Thank U, Next threatened to become overwhelming. The song “Ghostin” is about being with one partner while still torn over another; the internet was quick to map these characters onto Grande’s recent biography, linking them to Miller and another ex, Pete Davidson. “Tha t [topic] took a lot to just touch on,” Monét says. “It’s a very sensitive subject. You’re trying to be respectful of both parties with the lyrics. It’s a fine line, especially with things being really recent and emotions flying. When [Grande] wanted to pause, she paused. When she wanted to come and turn up, or just talk, we talked.”

When they worked, they worked swiftly — many of the songs on Thank U, Next came in a flurry. “In My Head” took just 12 hours from start to finish, according to Andrews and Coney. With “7 Rings,” “as soon as we decided we were gonna use that melody [“My Favorite Things” from The Sound of Music ], words started to fall into place,” says Vitia. “It all happened so fast.” And “ NASA” was written that same day.

Now that the album is out, Monét is already planning her next trip to Disneyland. It’s only been a few weeks since her last visit with Grande, but now she has a new goal. “I would really love to hear [‘NASA’ while] on [the ride] Space Mountain,” Monét says. “I’m just gonna have to go in there with headphones.”

Ariana Grande Spins Heartbreak Into Gold on ‘Eternal Sunshine’

The pop star sets the end of a romance and the start of a new one to a soundtrack awash in lavish atmosphere and adventurous melodies, with help from Max Martin.

Ariana Grande, in a brown sweater and matching paisley miniskirt and boots, squats with her head on her hand in a studio setting.

By Lindsay Zoladz

In 2019, the altitudinous-voiced pop star Ariana Grande released an exquisitely unbothered breakup song titled “Thank U, Next” — a light, chiming smash that mentioned several of her famous exes by name and then blithely banished them from her heart forever with a wink and a smile.

But the heartache that fuels her seventh album, “Eternal Sunshine,” is of a considerably deeper variety; it even takes its name from Michel Gondry’s 2004 movie about the impossible fantasy of purging a past relationship from memory. “I try to wipe my mind, just so I feel less insane,” Grande, 30, sings on its skittering, mid-tempo title track. The potent melancholy that suffuses the song, and much of the album, tells you about how well that went.

“Eternal Sunshine” is Grande’s first album in over three years, which is a considerable pause after a prolific stretch where she put out a hit LP nearly annually. She followed the poised, polished “Sweetener” in 2018 with two quickly produced albums that felt more off-the-cuff and conversational: the intimate and revelatory “Thank U, Next” and the love-struck but less consistent “Positions.”

Since then, she got divorced from her husband of two years, Dalton Gomez, and started a romance with Ethan Slater, her co-star in the upcoming movie version of the hit musical “Wicked.” An overall narrative arc of heartbreak and new love unfolds on “Eternal Sunshine.” But, in a departure from her last several albums — one of which featured a song named for Pete Davidson, the comedian to whom she was then engaged — Grande stops short of explicit nods to autobiography and lets sweeping, wholehearted emotion tell the story.

“Eternal Sunshine” is Grande’s most sustained collaboration with pop’s own Wizard of Oz, the Swedish hitmaker Max Martin , with whom she wrote or produced 11 of its 13 tracks. (Ilya Salmanzadeh, a longtime collaborator of both Grande and Martin, also helped write and produce much of the album.) Unsurprisingly, this is one of Grande’s most meticulously crafted and texturally consistent releases — it sounds as expensive as the gleaming treasures she sang about on “7 Rings” — though it lacks the whispered asides, rough edges and irreverent humor that made those last two albums so fun. Still, “Eternal Sunshine” is awash in lavish atmosphere, adventurous melodies and an emotional weight that brings a new sophistication to Grande’s songcraft.

On a brief introduction subtitled “End of the World,” Grande expresses doubts about a relationship and pops a burning question in the glowing lower depths of her register: “If it all ended tomorrow, would I be the one on your mind?” The answer lies in the title of the following song: “Bye.”

That track, a disco delicacy as richly layered as a five-tier cake, is one of the album’s finest moments — a showcase for both the belt-it-out power and the stop-on-a-dime agility of Grande’s voice. Martin’s approach to pop structure is famously rigid, but throughout “Eternal Sunshine,” Grande proves that she is a gifted and nimble enough singer to eke out considerable melodic freedom within his bounds. On the title track’s wrenching falsetto chorus, and on the ecstatic bridge of the second single, “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love),” she glides effortlessly across the sorts of notes that many of her peers can only gaze at like distant stars.

“Eternal Sunshine” is strongest when it leans hardest into R&B, a genre Grande impressively embraced on her gorgeously sung if somewhat traditionally arranged 2013 debut, “Yours Truly.” Here, and on a particularly strong stretch in the middle of the album, she and Martin coat the genre’s liquid cadences in a retro-futuristic Y2K-era sheen.

A molten-metal bass line warps its way through “True Story,” a slinky song about the finger-pointing stage of a relationship’s demise (“I’ll play the villain if you need me to, I know how this goes,” Grande sings with a resigned shrug). “The Boy Is Mine,” a lusty song about a forbidden crush, name-checks Brandy and Monica’s 1998 hit and features the sort of stuttering percussion that almost demands some stomping boy-band choreography. When you’re working with Martin, the guy who co-wrote “I Want It That Way” and “It’s Gonna Be Me” — why not?

“Eternal Sunshine” is a pop album so full of imaginative sonic details, there are even interesting moments on the weaker songs, like the celestial vocal ascent at the end of the relatively stiff “Supernatural” or the so-wrong-it’s-right note Grande reaches for in the chorus of “Imperfect for You.” The shimmering track underpinning the thumping “We Can’t Be Friends” skews dangerously close to Robyn’s “Dancing on My Own,” but Grande’s vocal performance and a few added flourishes — like the way the beat suddenly drops out when Grande mentions “silence” — ultimately give the song its own personality.

The house-inspired hit “Yes, And?” also nods to an immediately recognizable inspiration, Madonna’s eternal “Vogue,” albeit with a dash of vinegar. “Your business is yours and mine is mine,” Grande intones on the spoken-word bridge, a far cry from the transparent disclosures of “Thank U, Next.” Though it fares better in the context of the album, “Yes, And?” and its light tabloid talk-back still feels like an unrepresentative leadoff single — the album’s rare track that is focused outward rather than inward.

For once, there are no cameos from other artists here; even the backing vocals consist of densely layered, harmonizing Grandes. The album’s sole feature comes in its final moments, from Grande’s grandmother, who offers some sage relationship advice at the end of the sweet, hip-hop-inflected ballad “Ordinary Things”: If you don’t want to kiss your partner good night each evening, “you’re in the wrong place — get out.”

As Grande coos this ode to doing nothing with someone you love — “No matter what we do, there’s never going to be an ordinary thing” — a certain buoyancy has returned to her voice. Maybe it wasn’t the end of the world after all.

Candid … Ariana Grande.

Ariana Grande: Eternal Sunshine review – perceptive post-divorce album is nearly spotless

(Republic) Amid intense and intrusive speculation about her private life, Grande wipes away the tears and tackles the big questions of adult life with maturity, compassion – and delicious gossip

B y 2020, Ariana Grande had achieved saintlike status in pop. No one would argue with it. At her 2017 show in Manchester, 22 fans were killed in a terrorist attack, and she was praised for her grace when she threw the all-star One Love Manchester benefit concert just two weeks later. The following year, her still-beloved ex-boyfriend, the rapper Mac Miller , died of an accidental overdose. She then got together with comedian Pete Davidson but swiftly broke off their engagement in her enduring grief. Her music evolved from enjoyable post-Nickelodeon bad-girl R&B to process these anguishes with fleet sophistication, and Grande’s name came to populate the writing credits: 2018’s at-ease Sweetener was her statement of survival. Five months later came Thank U, Next , a breezier assertion of acceptance and pleasure that was written and recorded in just a few weeks, after Grande said she wanted to be freed from pop’s heavy logistics to release music like a rapper – to “talk to my fans and sing and write music and drop it the way these boys do”. One year on, Positions precariously navigated the compatibility of healing and moving on. The latter was a minor dip in quality, but the intimacy and immediacy of Grande’s reborn project felt transcendent.

The artwork for Eternal Sunshine.

Her tentative recovery continued when she got married in 2021. Two years later, it was over – and unfounded speculation about Grande’s alleged infidelity, as well as taking up with her married (but separated) co-star in a forthcoming film adaptation of the musical Wicked, prompted a backlash, despite “a source” telling People that there was no overlap with either party’s prior relationship. Social media gossips made viral clips compiling “evidence” of Grande’s alleged history of cheating. At the end of 2023, the press-shy musician posted a rare statement on Instagram about feeling “so deeply misunderstood by people who don’t know me, who piece whispers together and make what they want out of me and their assumptions of my life”. In January, her Vogue-referencing comeback single Yes, And? reminded haters “your business is yours and mine is mine / Why do you care so much whose dick I ride?”, which unfortunately also highlighted the drama to anyone blissfully aware of it. Apparently many did care: she lost 360,000 Instagram followers after the song’s announcement. It’s a dispiriting reminder of the fickleness of public favour and the entitlement over other people’s business that social media has stirred – the souring of Grande’s unusual vulnerability.

Fortunately, the outcry hasn’t stymied her candour on her opulent, bumping seventh album, which moves from self-scouring to implications of her ex’s treachery – suggesting she may previously have been keeping her powder dry for Eternal Sunshine. There’s delicious provocation: “I’ll play whatever part you need me to,” she sings to whoever’s smearing her on True Story, “and I’ll be good in it too”; “You got me misunderstood but at least I look this good,” on We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love). With its lurching bass and flinching vocals, the former evokes Jai Paul remixing Justin Timberlake’s betrayal ur-text Cry Me a River, while the latter shares the juddering synths and chiptune flourishes of Robyn’s homewrecking anthem Call Your Girlfriend – though the effect is jarringly retro.

With these knowing references, Grande toys with perceptions of victimhood and villainy that she knows she can’t control. But beyond these barbs, she’s more interested in the unpredictability of connection – the album opens with her asking “how can I tell if I’m in the right relationship?” – a sometimes painful, sometimes ecstatic fact of adult life that she handles with realism and compassion comparable to Adele’s divorce album, 30. The title track alludes to Michel Gondry’s 2004 film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and the impossibility of easily forgetting; sparkling like a miniature ballerina in a pink velvet box, I Wish I Hated You is a futile yearning for absolutes. Grande understands that living means salvaging what you can from the wreckage and moving on, and the risk-aversion and second-guessing of Positions makes way for action and instinct here, even when it’s destructive: with trap-Aaliyah hauteur, the possessive The Boy Is Mine “takes full accountability for all these tears” she has caused yet concludes “but I can’t ignore my heart” (underscored, in the official lyrics, by six exclamation marks). Her lyrics are piercingly direct, making the tedious astrology explainer Saturn Returns Interlude, a pro-forma irritant about growth , even more redundant.

after newsletter promotion

Unlike some peers, Grande has never been one for whole-cloth reinvention, and her post-2020 run reflects an artist dedicated to refining the links between Hollywood grandeur, classic R&B and trap’s staccato fizz. Primarily helmed by Grande and core collaborators Max Martin and Ilya Salmanzadeh (her staple co-writer Victoria Monét , now a solo artist in her own right, isn’t here), Eternal Sunshine is more full-bodied than the silvery, breathy Positions, though the album starts with a bit of a feint in Bye, a lavish orchestral-disco showstopper that soundtracks our heroine’s freedom. Otherwise Grande’s vibe is nocturnal-casual, and almost disarmingly so – riffling through devastating sentiments about lies, or being too much for someone who, on Don’t Wanna Break Up Again, turns up the TV to drown out her tears, with such breezy vocal virtuosity that the trauma flutters by.

Maybe that’s where it’s best left: at any rate, it doesn’t infect the optimism of the two closing songs, which celebrate the imperfection and ease of new love. We know that Grande has been here before, and from the off-kilter, minor-key vocal motifs and strange, slack guitar of Imperfect for You, you sense she knows the folly of her hope. Love is fallible. Contrary to what some fans might think, the heart does not always deal in moral rectitude. Putting Grande on a pedestal helps no one, and the beatific, mature Eternal Sunshine brings her safely back down to earth.

This week Laura listened to

Sui Zhen – Sleepless Written after the Melbourne musician endured not just the death of her mother but that of her newborn son, Sleepless is a stunningly lucid 13-minute epic about grief that brings to mind Jenny Hval and Let’s Eat Grandma in a surge of swooping, ecstatic electronics that build until they sound ready to take off.

Ariana Grande

Since her Billboard Hot 100 debut with the Mac Miller -assisted “The Way” back in 2013, Ariana Grande has evolved into a generational pop titan. Her awe-inspiring vocal prowess and fearlessness to move through the myriad subsects of pop, R&B, dance, hip-hop and musical theatre have resulted in a discography that is as creatively fulfilling as it is culturally and commercially impactful.

From her Victorious and Sam & Cat days — she didn’t say she couldn’t sing , after all! — it was glaringly obvious that Grande’s voice would carry her to unimaginable career heights. After a few false starts ( “Put Your Hearts Up,” anyone?) she eventually found her footing with Yours Truly , the R&B-laced debut LP that announced her as pop’s next superstar. From the jaunty “Popular Song” to her work with key producers and songwriters such as Victoria Monét , Tommy Brown , Leon Thomas III and Babyface , Yours Truly laid the groundwork that Grande’s entire catalog stands upon.

From there, she embarked on five consecutive albums of Top 40 domination. 2014 ‘s My Everything boasted four Hot 100 top 10 hits, 2016’s Dangerous Woman housed genre-bending collaborations with everyone from Macy Gray to Future , 2018’s Sweetener found Grande expanding her horizons by tapping Pharrell Williams , 2019’s Thank U, Next spawned a pair of career-defining No. 1 hits in its title track and “7 Rings,” and 2020’s Positions reignited her R&B influences and launched two monster hits in its chart-topping title track and “34+35” (No. 2). According to Luminate, Grande has shifted 19.4 million album units in the U.S. and earned over 23.6 billion streams across lead artist credits, as of Aug. 25, 2023, the ten-year anniversary of Yours Truly .

At the top of 2024, Grande made her grand return to the pop music scene with “yes, and?” A house-tastic kiss-off to her detractors, the Max Martin -helmed track serves as the lead single from Eternal Sunshine — Grande’s seventh studio album and first in three years. By the tail end of January (chart dated Jan. 27), “Yes, And?” launched atop the Hot 100 — her eighth chart-topper and sixth to debut at the pole position — and received a Mariah Carey -featuring remix five week slater.

As the two-time Grammy winner prepares to unleash Eternal Sunshine and enter her Wicked era, now is the time to take a trip down memory lane. From latex bunny ears to that low, blonde ponytail, here’s our ranking of every Ariana Grande studio album.

My Everything (2014)

My Everything is arguably the most interesting Ariana Grande album. After all, it’s not often that the record that solidifies a pop star as a near-insurmountable commercial force is also the star’s most incoherent and poorly sequenced offering.

Boasting four Hot 100 top 10 hits — “Problem” (No. 2, with Iggy Azalea ), “Bang Bang” (No. 3, with Jessie J & Nicki Minaj ), “Break Free” (No. 4, with Zedd ) and “Love Me Harder” (No. 7, with The Weeknd ) — and an additional enduring smash in “One Last Time” (No. 13), My Everything’s prerogative was clear: transform Ariana Grande into the world’s most dominant pop star. And, clearly , it worked.

Grande’s sophomore album built on the pop-R&B fusion of her debut with a greater emphasis on meeting 2014 mainstream pop where it was at. She snagged a hit from the tail-end of the EDM craze with the floor-ready “Break Free,” jumped on the trend of horn-loops-as-hooks with the squawking “Problem,” and enlisted multiple guest stars on the precipice of truly reaching the zeitgeist of pop culture, including Childish Gambino (“Break Your Heart Right Back”) and The Weeknd.

Where the record fails both Grande and its listeners, however, is the jumbled track ordering. The overwrought balladry of “Best Mistake” (with Big Sean ) coming directly after the synthy blasts of “Break Free” is a prime example of sonic whiplash, as is the placement of the A$AP Ferg -assisted “Hands on Me” (one of Grande’s earliest attempts at a sex bop) directly after the yearning, Harry Styles -penned “Just A Little Bit of Your Heart.” To her credit, despite the plethora of guest stars (nine in total!), Grande never gets lost in the sea of supporting characters on My Everything .

My Everything might be an enjoyable collection of pop records, but it’s the Ariana Grande album with the least vision. Even moments of dynamite like “Be My Baby” (with Cashmere Cat ) can’t save the record from simply sounding like a hodgepodge of attempts at smash hits, for better and for worse.

Yours Truly (2013)

The album that started it all . There are so many throughlines in Grande’s career and sonic profile that find their source in Yours Truly . Her affinity for grand, whimsical album openers starts with the sweeping “Honeymoon Avenue,” her seamless bridging of ’90s hip-hop and R&B influences finds its roots in “You’ll Never Know” and “Baby I,” and her starring turn as Glinda the Good Witch in the upcoming two-part Wicked movie musical can be traced back to her MIKA -assisted “Popular Song.”

Just like her instantly memorable 2013 American Music Awards performance, Yours Truly does everything a debut LP should. The record displays Ariana’s artistic ethos: a vocalist informed by the traditions of Broadway and Black R&B and soul singers who uses her expansive range to explore existing as a hopeless romantic, eternally searching for the truth about love in all of its iterations. With a tracklist that features three of her now-ex-lovers (Big Sean, Mac Miller and Nathan Sykes), and doo-wop-indebted odes to the rush of romance like “Tattooed Heart,” Ariana’s heart has been the driving force of her artist project since Yours Truly .

Upon release, critics lauded Yours Truly for how mature it sounded for a Nickelodeon star’s debut LP — and that characterization still holds up. Ten years later, that sample of Mary J. Blige’s “Real Love” on “Lovin’ It” still sparkles… and that’s one of the more easily recognizable samples! Take “Right There,” for example, which samples The Jeff Lorber Fusion’s “Rain Dance” by way of Lil Kim’s “Crush On You.” That level of crate-digging is how Ariana ends up incorporating elements of songs by Wendy Rene and The Four Seasons on later albums.

Nonetheless, that throughline of maturity isn’t foolproof, with tracks like “Better Left Unsaid” and “Piano” standing as stark — though not entirely unenjoyable — reminders that Yours Truly was indeed a late-2013 pop debut. Take from that what you will.

Dangerous Woman (2016)

For some fans, Dangerous Woman is the holy grail of Ariana Grande albums and a certified pop classic. For others, the album simply exists.

The story of Dangerous Woman — originally titled Moonlight — really begins with “Focus,” a brassy, “Problem”-indebted track that initially served as the set’s lead single. Despite debuting in the Hot 100’s top 10 (No. 7), the track’s tepid critical reception and lack of longevity forced Grande to change directions. As a result, she unleashed “Dangerous Woman,” a career highlight that found her wailing over a soulful mélange of pop, rock and R&B, and which ended up titling the pop superstar’s third album.

Trading cat ears for Playboy-esque latex bunny ears, Dangerous Woman was a concerted effort to up the maturity level of Grande’s image and lyrical content. She teamed up with Nicki Minaj to sing about the power of a good lay on the frisky “Side to Side,” tapped Lil Wayne for a whispery slow jam titled “Let Me Love You” and delivered a standout self-pleasure anthem with “Thinking Bout You.” From the pulsating synths of “Into You” to the house flirtations of “Be Alright,” Dangerous Woman proved that — when she wants to — Grande can play the pop game better than pretty much anyone else.

As such, the album is undoubtedly a solid pop confection, but it’s also tiringly long. The most comprehensive edition of Dangerous Woman is a staggering 17 tracks — and that doesn’t even include “Focus,” which only appears on the Japanese editions of the album. What could have been a sharp, concise commentary on Grande coming into her sexuality in the public eye (after years of infantilization, largely because of her size) instead became a sprawling heap of pop tunes that, while mostly satisfying, still starts to lack focus and drift into incoherence midway through the record.

Thank U, Next (2019)

Thank U, Next is probably the most special Ariana Grande record, for the simple fact that she was able to enjoy record-breaking success with an album that found her at her most emotionally vulnerable. Having been in the public eye for the majority of her career, Grande’s life has always been tabloid fodder — but for a long time, aside from tracks like “You Don’t Know Me” and “Jason’s Song,” she didn’t get too autobiographically specific in her music.

Following the devastating arena bombing at the Manchester stop of her Dangerous Woman Tour and the subsequent Grammy-winning Sweetener album, Grande was finally ready to take an unflinching look inward on Thank U, Next . A companion piece to Sweetener , Next finds Grande tucking in to the glittery trap-inflected R&B she first experimented with on 2015’s Christmas & Chill EP. If her first three albums were dedicated to clear-cut emotions, Next is Grande’s grand rumination on how grief sends everything into a tailspin. The Wendy Rene-sampling “Fake Smile” is a slick commentary on how exhausting performative emotion is, “Ghostin” finds Grande parsing through the struggle of showing up for your current partner while grieving a former lover and “Needy” is a brutal look at how a person’s desire to be wanted can completely transform their approach to life and relationships.

The true triumph of Thank U, Next , however, is its balance of heavy emotional lows with era-defining pop bangers like “7 Rings,” “Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored,” and its title track — which, of course, concurrently ranked at Nos. 1-3 on the Billboard Hot 100 dated Feb. 23, 2020, making Grande the first solo artist in history to achieve such a feat. A haughty anthem of braggadocio like “7 Rings” only sounds so good because an introspective number like “In My Head” shows just how messy life can get for Grande outside of “breakfast at Tiffany’s and bottles of bubbles.”

Really, Next’s only setback is that its overarching sound is so firmly planted in that late-2010s wave of trap&B (more specifically, Tommy Brown’s take on that style), that it can sound a bit dated when revisited a half-decade later.

Positions (2020)

Upon release, a number of fans derided Positions because its sound was the furthest Grande had strayed from straightforward pop at that point. They were wrong then, and they’re even more incorrect now.

With Positions — which does still feature a Hot 100-topping title track and No. 2-peaking smash in the raunchy “34+35” (with Doja Cat & Megan Thee Stallion ) — Grande used the involuntary intimacy of COVID-19 lockdown to work on herself and, in turn, work on her relationship with the concept of love and how she approaches new romantic relationships. Where Next is, in many ways, a break-up album, Positions finds Ariana toying with the possibilities of new romance. “Six Thirty” is the perfect soundtrack to the transition from the talking stage to dating, “Off the Table” is a heartfelt acknowledgement of the work it takes to foster and upkeep a healthy relationship, and the Doja Cat-assisted “Motive” expertly captures the innate playfulness of that period when sparks first start seriously flying.

On the other hand, Positions is also a reflection of Grande’s self-growth. After all, she can’t fit herself into new, different positions that best serve her new relationship if she’s unwilling to get uncomfortable and try new positions in her own life. The India.Arie -nodding “My Hair” is a full-circle moment for a performer whose entire career has been, in part, shaped by and defined by her hair, and album closer “POV” is a stunning declaration of Grande’s intent to love herself the same way she expects her partner to love her.

With its standard edition clocking in at just over 40 minutes and 14 tracks, Positions doesn’t overstay its welcome, but it also doesn’t feel too brief. Musically, Ariana is arguably at her most singular on this record: The string-laden melodrama of Yours Truly courses through Positions , as does a smart balance of the show-stopping vocal performances of her first three albums and the extended stays in her lush, understated lower register that characterize a healthy amount of her later sets. A remarkably consistent listen from top to bottom, Positions already has a solid argument for the title of most misunderstood mainstream pop album of the 2020s.

Sweetener (2018)

Ariana Grande is at her best when she’s at her most sonically adventurous. Sweetener — a Billboard 200 -topping amalgamation of zany Pharrell Williams productions and sleek Max Martin-crafted pop anthems — is the superstar’s strongest album to date. It’s the perfect integration of Ariana the Artist™, Ariana the Popstar™ and Ariana the Person™ — and it both was exactly what she needed post-Manchester, and still holds up incredibly well six years later.

Beginning with “Raindrops,” a brief a cappella cover of The Four Seasons’ “An Angel Cried” (written by Charles Calello, a close friend of Grande’s grandfather), Sweetener immediately announces itself as an incredibly intimate affair. By the second track, however, Sweetener does what every great pop album should — takes a hard left, which pays off handsomely by the time “Get Well Soon,” the album’s devastating closer, rolls around.

“Blazed,” the album’s second track, is the introduction of the LP’s Pharrell side; Skittering, percussive beats reign supreme as Grande toys with a vocal delivery somewhere between Mariah Carey and Gwen Stefani. It’s new territory for her — as are the record’s dalliances with U.K. garage (“No Tears Left to Cry”) and the power of the cowbell (“Borderline”) — but she handles each foray with remarkable ease.

Whether she’s detailing her anxiety (“Breathin”) or her divine sexual prowess (“God Is A Woman”), Ariana’s voice floats across Sweetener . Her levity is her resilience. How else does someone process such a harrowing series of traumatic events and still come out with a penchant for positivity? With Sweetener’s dual lead producers, Grande finally achieves a balance of appeasing the demands that come with being on the of the world’s leading pop stars and pursuing new sounds that are as initially jarring as they are cathartic. Take, the Nicki Minaj-featuring “The Light Is Coming,” for example; the track’s stuttering, new wave-indebted production and bizarre spoken sample are almost overwhelming, but Grande’s chanted mantra of “the light is coming to give back everything the darkness stole” is the battle cry of an artist who heals herself and others by wading through the vast expanse of music and trying on whatever feels right .

Easily the record most infused with her verve and personality, and the album with her clearest artistic vision (and cleanest execution of said vision), Sweetener currently stands as Ariana Grande’s best album — and everyone could use a little bit of it in their lives.

  • Ariana Grande has released seven studio albums since 2013.
  • Business Insider's senior music reporter ranked them from worst to best, using a unique scoring method.
  • "Thank U, Next" took the top spot, while Grande's newest album "Eternal Sunshine" took third place.

In the decade-plus since Ariana Grande released her debut album, she has emerged as one of music's most powerful voices.

The 30-year-old singer-songwriter has broken chart records and racked up streaming numbers with her potent blend of pop, R&B, soul, and '90s diva-worthy vocals.

Business Insider's senior music reporter ranked all seven of her studio albums from worst to best. The unique scoring method assigns a point total to each song — weighing factors like listenability, ingenuity, and lyrical quality — divided by the total number of songs on each tracklist.

(Note: Grande's 2015 EP, "Christmas + Chill," and 2019 live album, "K Bye for Now," were not factored into these rankings.)

7. "Yours Truly"

Final grade: 6.7/10

Grande's debut album "Yours Truly" is a portrait of a theater kid and an enthusiastic student of musical history.

The uneven tracklist is peppered with Broadway-inspired vocal runs, a cappella harmonies by The Rascals, and retro Mariah Carey-esque melodies. Grande draws upon everything from '90s diva pop ("Lovin' It") to '70s funk ("Right There") and East Coast hip-hop ("The Way").

When it works, it works extremely well. The best songs are youthful, fizzy, and infectious — particularly the album's lead single "The Way," which remains a God-tier song in Grande's discography.

But throughout "Yours Truly," Grande struggles to forge an identity amid the voices of her many idols. The album's overall tone can feel cloying and flimsy; there's no perspective in doe-eyed tracks like "Piano" or "Popular Song."

Its bright spots can't totally outshine the dim ones, and "Yours Truly" is split pretty evenly between the two. Four of its 12 songs are immediately skip-worthy, while two more are simply fluff.

God-tier songs: "The Way"

Worth listening to: "Honeymoon Avenue," "Baby I," "Right There," "Tattooed Heart," "You'll Never Know"

Background music: "Lovin' It," "Daydreamin'"

Skip: "Piano," "Almost Is Never Enough," "Popular Song," "Better Left Unsaid"

6. "My Everything (Deluxe)"

Final grade: 8/10

Despite the short break in between her first two albums, "My Everything" reintroduced Grande as a shrewd and ambitious star.

In creating her sophomore album, Grande didn't simply retread the successes of her debut, a trap that many young artists tend to fall into.

Instead, Grande studied the musical trends of the time — soaring hooks, sparkling synths, EDM-flavored production — and proved she could master them with a flick of her ponytail.

In its best moments, "My Everything" is confident and danceable without sounding corny or overproduced.

The album's singles are particularly excellent: "Problem" combines retro saxophone loops with a modern beat; "One Last Time" makes electro-pop sound spacious; "Break Free" has become a gay pride anthem. The Biz Markie-sampling deep cut "Only 1" is another clear standout, putting Grande's vocals on a deserved pedestal.

However, Grande was so ready to stake her place as a pop star that "My Everything" sacrificed personality and staying power in favor of trend-following and feature-grubbing. Catchy, hectic singles like "Bang Bang" and "Love Me Harder" made sense in 2014, but they just don't hit like they used to. Too much of the album sounds dated today; one could never call it "timeless."

God-tier songs: "One Last Time," "Only 1"

Worth listening to: "Problem (feat. Iggy Azalea)," "Break Free (feat. Zedd)," "Best Mistake (feat. Big Sean)," "Be My Baby (feat. Cashmere Cat)," "Break Your Heart Right Back (feat. Childish Gambino)," "Love Me Harder (feat. The Weeknd)"

5. "Dangerous Woman"

Final grade: 8.3/10

Although Grande traded her cat ears for latex gloves and a bunny mask , "Dangerous Woman" isn't just sexy for sexy's sake.

On both " Victorious " and "Yours Truly," Grande played the role of an eyelash-batting ingenue. "My Everything" cast her as a coquettish dance floor siren. But Grande's third album finally began to introduce her as a three-dimensional person — and a sexually empowered feminist, at that — rather than a caricature.

Grande's four-octave range allows her to sound at ease in any genre. "Dangerous Woman" takes full advantage of that fact. She's equally commanding on slinky slow burns ("Let Me Love You," "Leave Me Lonely") as on explosive pop romps ("Greedy," "Bad Decisions"). To this day, "Thinking Bout You" is one of her most impressive vocal performances.

Indeed, in terms of pure pop catharsis, "Dangerous Woman" is up there with the best of it.

This album is a euphoric listening experience with very few low points. However, that doesn't mean it's particularly artful or cohesive.

"Moonlight" is pure "Yours Truly"-era balladry, while four songs later, "Side to Side" revels in reggae; the try-hard trap song "Everyday" is directly followed by the dull acoustics of "Sometimes." This chaotic sequencing could be evocative if it felt intentional. Instead, it feels like a "This Is Ariana Grande" playlist on shuffle.

While there's something to be said for a complex woman whose talents and interests aren't easily delineated, "Dangerous Woman" plays like the work of a singles-focused pop star, rather than an artist with a fleshed-out vision.

God-tier songs: "Into You"

Worth listening to: "Dangerous Woman," "Moonlight," "Be Alright," "Side to Side," "Let Me Love You," "Greedy," "Leave Me Lonely," "Bad Decisions," "Knew Better / Forever Boy," "Thinking Bout You"

Background music: "I Don't Care"

Skip: "Everyday," "Sometimes," "Touch It"

4. "Positions (Deluxe)"

Final grade: 8.7/10

By all accounts, "Positions" is the result of a happy, peaceful era in Grande's life .

The album is astonishingly cohesive, behaving much like a river; each song feels like an essential part of its natural energy . Grande's weightless vocals flow through the tracklist like a current.

Once you arrive at the final and best song , the river lets out into the ocean. You're left with an expansive, earned sense of gratitude. As I wrote for BI's first-listen review , Grande's previous two albums felt either meticulous or urgent or both. "Positions" feels free.

But that doesn't mean it's empirically better.

"Positions" is graceful, sure, and expertly executed . But the way it drifts and glides also feels very safe. Cohesion can be a double-edged sword; there are very few low points, but even fewer risks. It lacks the luminosity of "Sweetener" and the tenacity of "Thank U, Next."

Though "Positions" does contain glimmers of thrill and awe (usually when Grande is feeling particularly horny, as on "34+35" and "Nasty"), the album doesn't command attention from start to finish in the same way as its predecessors.

God-tier songs: "POV"

Worth listening to: "34+35," "Motive (with Doja Cat)," "Just Like Magic," "Off the Table (with The Weeknd)," "Six Thirty," "Safety Net (feat. Ty Dolla $ign)," "Nasty," "West Side," "Positions," "Obvious," "Test Drive," "Worst Behavior"

3. "Eternal Sunshine"

Final grade: 8.8/10

After sitting with this album for less than a day, I feel comfortable saying that it's good. Extremely good. In fact, the production is immaculate, as is Grande's voice (which almost feels foolish to note because her voice is always immaculate).

However, "Eternal Sunshine" works much better as a collection of bops than it works as a coherent album. The narrative structure is all over the place and I don't feel like it taught me anything new about Grande, her worldview, or her psyche. We already know Grande is an masterful hitmaker — what else?

I'm hopeful and prepared for this album to grow on me. But as of writing, none of the best tracks — "Don't Wanna Break Up Again," "Eternal Sunshine," "We Can't Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)," and "I Wish I Hated You" — rank among Grande's God-tier songs. On the other hand, the album doesn't have any obvious skips, either.

In terms of sheer ear candy, you could argue this is Grande's best-sounding project. It demonstrates her growth as a producer, vocalist, and solitary songwriter. But it doesn't meet the emotional bar set by her two greatest works.

God-tier songs: N/A

Worth listening to: "Bye," "Don't Wanna Break Up Again," "Eternal Sunshine," "Supernatural," "True Story," "The Boy Is Mine," "We Can't Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)," "I Wish I Hated You," "Imperfect For You," "Ordinary Things (feat. Nonna)"

Background music: "Intro (End of the World)," "Saturn Returns Interlude," "Yes, And?"

2. "Sweetener"

Final grade: 10.7/10

"Sweetener" is blue-moon magic, and it's not just because the album is unlike anything else in Grande's catalog.

It's that Grande, who was approaching the peak of her fame, had become best known for her sexy bops and extraordinary voice. And yet, she crafted a shimmering, scaled-back tracklist using breathy vocals and weirdo production flourishes.

It's that she had recently weathered an actual nightmare when 22 fans died at her 2017 concert in Manchester, yet she emerged brighter, braver, and more herself than ever before.

Instead of retreating back into tried-and-true territory, Grande sang about anxiety and named a song after her (now-ex) fiancé. She exposed her beating heart, then probably folded actual audio of those thump-thump-thumps into the layers and harmonies of "Get Well Soon."

"Sweetener" is the kind of album you sink into, a cloudy world of Grande's own creation, both challenging and healing. It remains Grande's most original and experimental album to date. And while the 15-song tracklist certainly has a few duds, they're easily offset by its many highlights. The overall effect remains remarkably pure.

If Grande hadn't outdone herself with a no-skips album just six months later, "Sweetener" would easily be No. 1 on this list.

God-tier songs: "R.E.M," "God Is a Woman," "No Tears Left to Cry," "Get Well Soon"

Worth listening to: "Sweetener," "Successful," "Everytime," "Breathin," "Better Off," "Goodnight n Go," "Pete Davidson"

Background music: "Raindrops (An Angel Cried)," "Borderline (feat. Missy Elliott)"

1. "Thank U, Next"

Final grade: 11.7/10

"Thank U, Next" is the natural No. 1 on this list because it's the culmination of everything Grande does best. It's an ideal blend of her pristine vocals, catchy hooks, R&B instincts, and fearless lyrical soul-bearing.

It's everything she has honed and fought for. Only an artist with tremendous talent, clout, and emotional strength could have produced and released an album like this.

"Thank U, Next" is easily the most engaging listening experience in Grande's catalog — but it's also one of the most iconic pop albums in recent memory .

That she managed to siphon this music from the depths of personal tragedy makes the effect even more sublime.

There's not a single skip on this tracklist. If I were forced to choose, "NASA" and "Make Up" are the weakest of the bunch, but that certainly doesn't mean they're bad. In fact, it's a testament to the strength of this album that its "worst" songs are just slightly less dazzling than the rest.

God-tier songs: "Needy," "In My Head," "Thank U, Next"

Worth listening to: "Imagine," "Bloodline," "Fake Smile," "Bad Idea," "Ghostin," "7 Rings," "Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored"

Background music: "NASA," "Make Up"

*Final album score based on songs per category (2 points for "God-tier song," 1 point for "Worth listening to," .5 for "Background music," 0 for "Press skip").
