Following the May release of his latest album  The Off-Season , J. Cole has announced he will be heading out on tour with 21 Savage and Morray this fall.

The Off-Season Tour is set to kick off in September in Miami and conclude on Oct. 21 in Los Angeles. 21 Savage and Morray, who both appear on  The Off-Season  highlight “My Life,” will tag along for the majority of the shows, although 21 will miss the Atlanta show in late September. The list of dates includes Dreamville Festival 2022, scheduled for April.

Tickets for the tour will go on pre-sale this Wednesday, June 23, with general sale opening up on June 25. The announcement comes just a day after Cole teased a tour for the record, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart last month. The last time he toured was for  KOD  in 2018. Aside from the shows as part of the tour, Cole will also play Rolling Loud New York and Rolling Loud Los Angeles this October and December, respectively.

Following the release of  The Off-Season , a record Cole says will be followed by his long-teased album  The Fall Off , a rumored 2013 altercation between Cole and Diddy was the subject of renewed attention due to the track “Let Go My Hand.” The song featured an appearance from Diddy, providing the outro, and now the two have even poked fun at the incident .

J. Cole on stage in black and white

J. Cole may be a humble guy when it comes to fame, but he knows one thing that is for sure: he’s the GOAT.

Last night, the rapper and noted hooper, is currently back outside for ‘The Off-Season Tour’ with 21 Savage , Morray , and comedian Druski, making his Oct. 11th stop in Dallas at the American Airlines Center, which is home to the Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Stars. The concept of ‘The Off-Season Tour’ is bringing back the bars to a city near you, visualizing the idea of performing his more lyrical songs over his hits during the making of his sixth studio album The Off-Season.

“I wanted to be able to come to this level of place and give y’all the fucking bars, the real ill bars,” Cole said, just moments after basking in the chants of his name from the crowd made of mostly young Dallasites. “’Cause I’ve been coming to Dallas for a really long time and I know people really appreciate the bars, the art of putting these fucking words together. I gotta step on this stage in front of thousands of people and still be able to be true to who I am and what I love.”

The autobiographical rapper has always operated from a place of authenticity, believing you should live your best life doing what you love and what you are passionate about. For a short period, Cole finally made his hoop dreams a reality by joining the Rwanda Patriots BBC team and playing in the Basketball Africa League, showing career highlights and his stats in an SportsCenter spoof intro video before coming on stage. “Averages platinum album every two years. Bicycle enthusiast. Wears Crocs out of sport mode.” All facts.

In a video, Cole is in the locker room, rocking some grey sweatpants, a white tee, a royal blue No. 15 jersey that reads “Dreamer” in the front and “Cloud” in the back. He jogs his way to stage in sneakers. Unfortunately for this stop, Cole left the Crocs at home. Maybe he knew stepping into the house of Luka Dončić and the Mavs needed proper footwear.

A few songs into his energetic set, Cole had another fact that he wanted to point out. It was his own version of a Mount Rushmore in rap. In his graphic, displayed during his performance of “100 Mil,’” Cole claimed he was the gold standard for his era. That’s early 2010s Cole from Cole World: The Sideline Story, mid-2010s Cole from 2014 Forest Hills Drive and 4 Your Eyez Only, and the 2020s Cole from The Off-Season. It only emphasizes the line from the song, “I’m on that Mount Rushmore, you n****s can’t front no more, bitch/I’ma reign until FEMA show up.”

As much of a superstar he is, Cole believes he is running third behind Drake and Kendrick Lamar . And thanks to Drizzy, he quickly debunked that by calling him one of the greatest rappers to touch a mic . These Dallas fans also agree: Cole deserves his Mount Rushmore spot because of his dedication, his discipline, and his prowess.

J. Cole is a funny guy ? pic.twitter.com/7PjrFTEdmS — Eric Diep (@E_Diep) October 12, 2021

At 36 years old, Cole has a sizable catalogue, spanning mixtapes and albums. He rarely stumbled or forgot his words (except for “Pride is the Devil,” which he grumbled to himself about messing up). He didn’t use a backing track, which should be expected for an artist at his level. He was focused as our master of ceremonies, keeping the crowd’s spirits high by making sure his fans (day ones, first timers) all had a song to rap along to.

When he spoke to the crowd, you knew it came from the heart. Talking about choosing to perform a deep cut over a classic, explaining rappers tend to chase a high when their words get rapped back to them, he said, “Don’t run from the feeling of really doing some shit you love, no matter if three or four fucking people in the crowd know that shit. Always get on the stage and do some shit that you want to do and that you love to do.” It was a perfect lead-in to the Friday Night Lights song “Back to the Topic (Freestyle)” that a lot of people knew the words to despite his hesitation.

It was fun to feel nostalgic with Cole as he performed more hits like “Nobody’s Perfect,” “Work Out,” “Power Trip,” and “Planez.” But there’s something to be said about how good these Off-Season songs sounded in an arena setting. Many of us circled our calendars when Cole announced his fall tour, hoping that the coronavirus pandemic didn’t derail his momentum after the album’s huge streaming success. Performing these songs for the first time to this Dallas crowd translated well live. “95 South” hits hard, especially when Lil Jon’s “Put Yo Hood Up” part comes on. “Applying Pressure” is a lyrical exercise. “Amari” is a coming of age story after surviving trial and tribulations. For Cole’s more emotional records, sometimes it’s better to just listen to him and take in his words.

A particularly hyped moment during the show was when Cole brought out Queens rapper and Dreamville signee Bas to perform, “The Jackie.” In a playful competition, they pitted opposing sides against each other to see who could scream, “You see the drop-top, bitch, stop playin’ with me” the loudest. For someone who has recently shifted his approach and started doing more guest features, it’s clearly working. “The Jackie” had one of the loudest crowd interactions of the night. More J. Cole features please.

Towards the end of the evening, 21 Savage and Morray joined Cole on stage again to perform “A Lot” and “My Life.” Cole, acting like a big brother to them, called 21 Savage “a young legend” and praised Morray for being from the same city and being one of the rare people to make it out of Fayetteville. Cole instantly became a fan after hearing “Quicksand,” instructing the Pastor of the Street to run back “Quicksand” again. 21 Savage and Morray each had solid sets of their own earlier in the evening, catering to the hometown crowd with an appearance by Yella Beezy to perform “That’s On Me” during 21’s set and Morray performing “In My Blood” as a tribute to the late MO3.

Cole’s GOAT status was truly felt during his encore. Just when you thought he was finished, “No Role Modelz” and “Middle Child,” two songs where he let the crowd do most of the rapping, was an adrenaline rush. Sweaty and visibly tired, Cole was smiling and continuously grateful for all the love he received this evening. He left with “Hunger on Hillside” as our exit music, walking away as the basketball hoop on stage was on fire. It’s lyrics and meaning are representative of J. Cole currently: “I don’t speak the language of cowards/I walk through the flame like I’m Teflon.”

‘The Off-Season Tour’ comes at a time when major artists are just getting back into touring after much of live music was shut down in 2020. Cole’s latest tour further stamps his legacy as a rapper who genuinely cares about the people affected by his music, wanting to connect with many of them as soon as he could. He says, “…address me as the GOAT like they call Chief Keef Sosa” not as a slick boast, but as a proclamation: the off-season is over. The bars are back in season.

J. Cole: The Off-Season Tour

By Katherine Goff

After going seven years without seeing a concert, Monday, October 4, I saw my favorite artist, rapper J.Cole , for the first time. At the beginning of 2019, my sister Ruby Goff (‘24), and I started listening to Cole’s most popular album, 2014 Forest Hills Drive . People who are not fans of Cole often recognize songs from this album, since it is known for going platinum three times without any features from other artists. After listening to this album on repeat for a year, I started listening to Cole’s older albums, such as Cole World: The Sideline Story . Songs from this album frequented my playlists and soon took over my Spotify entirely. I started watching videos on YouTube of Cole performing and started saving up to buy tickets for his next tour.

On May 14, J. Cole released his newest album, The Off-Season . About a month later, Cole posted a list on Instagram of tour dates and locations for the album. As soon as I saw the post, I called my sister and Eric McDaniel (‘22), a fellow J. Cole fan. Together, we decided that we would all purchase tickets and travel up to Washington, D.C. that Monday.

Cole released his first album, Cole World: The Sideline Story , on September 27, 2011, over ten years ago. While the album was successful, Cole’s claim to fame was through his third album, 2014 Forest Hills Drive . The album was nominated for Best Rap Album during the 58th Grammy Awards, and although Cole did not win, he later won Best Rap Song for “a lot” in 2019. Now having performed over 700 concerts, Cole has gained the title of being one of the most influential rappers in the industry.

As soon as the tickets went on sale for The Off-Season Tour, I jumped on my computer to try and find the best seats for the cheapest price. After calling McDaniel a mere five times and refreshing my browser over and over, I finally found the perfect seats.

Four months later, we finally arrived at the concert at the Capital One Arena. When waiting in line outside, we were not required to wear masks, but once we stepped inside and headed towards our seats, security guards asked that we put them on. Rules regarding vaccination status vary from venue to venue; however, we were never asked to show our vaccination cards or proof of a negative COVID test. McDaniel (‘22) stated that “it felt odd seeing an arena packed shoulder-to-shoulder, but it did bring back the sense of normal life.”

The show was scheduled to start at 8:00 p.m. However, after reading reviews from Ticketmaster, I feared that Cole would not come out until 11:00 p.m. In order to make time go by, we decided to purchase overpriced shirts, sweatshirts, and snacks. We settled back into our seats, anticipating another two hours of waiting, but were shocked when we were greeted by Morray , one of J. Cole’s opening performers. He performed six songs, including his most popular song, “Quicksand.”  His music is similar to Cole’s but incorporates more singing than rapping.

Only 30 minutes later, 21 Savage arrived on stage to perform a few of his songs. Although I do not consider myself an avid listener of 21, I do enjoy some of his songs and have become more familiar with his music over the past few months. He sang some of his older, more popular songs, but surprised the crowd by performing his feature from one of Drake’s newest songs, “Knife Talk.” 21 Savage’s performance brought energy to the arena, and I thought he was an exceptional introduction to Cole.

Unlike any other concert I have been to, I never felt like I was waiting for an extensive period of time. After 21 wrapped up, internet comedian Druski performed for the crowd. Laughter echoed through the arena as Druski danced, sang, and cracked jokes. His act was relatively short, and McDaniel believes that “he got the crowd in a good mood before J. Cole came out.” As he left the stage, the lights dropped, and a video of Cole in the dressing room played on the big screen.

One of my favorite moments during a concert is when the artist appears on stage for the first time. When J. Cole walked on stage, I felt a rush of adrenaline and excitement fall over me. It is a surreal feeling when you finally see an artist in person. All I can think during these moments is, “They are actually real.” As Cole sang his first song, a massive basketball net blew up in flames behind him. The fire reflected a red tint throughout the entire arena and lit up Cole from behind. As Cole closed out his first song, my nervous adrenaline seemed to go away.

j cole off season tour

Cole explained to the crowd how he sees concerts as a “safe space” to share his music in a positive light. He mentioned how artists perform their most popular songs because they excite the crowd, but he believes in sharing songs that are most important to him. So Cole performed older songs, such as “Nobody’s Perfect” and “Back to the Topic,” to emphasize his point.

Alongside those two songs, Cole mainly performed songs from The Off-Season album. For example, he began the concert with “9 5 . s o u t h” and followed with “a m a r i” and “a p p l y i n g . p r e s s u r e.”

As I looked to my left and right, I saw fellow concert-goers rapping along with every song, word for word. It is an amazing feeling to be surrounded by people with the same interests as you. The concert went relatively quick; I remember looking down at my phone and being surprised when it was already 10:45 p.m.

Towards the end of the concert, Cole performed his most popular song, “No Role Modelz.” Ruby exclaimed, “When I heard the beginning of the song come on, I was ecstatic. ‘No Role Modelz’ was the first song I had ever heard from J. Cole,” and McDaniel  knew “every word to [the song], and so did the majority of the crowd.”

I could feel myself losing my voice and becoming more and more tired by the minute, but when Cole performed his last song, “MIDDLE CHILD,” I gained a second wave of energy.

Jordan Rose of Variety had a similar experience when attending Cole’s show in Brooklyn. She explains that “as concert-goers exited the Barclays Center, one could still hear Cole’s lyrics being murmured by fans making their way home.”

After the concert ended, I fell into what is known as post-concert depression. However, in the days following the concert, I listened to J. Cole repeatedly and replayed the concert over and over in my head. If Cole ever visits Washington, D.C. again, you will be sure to find me somewhere in the crowd.

Set List: Drake & J. Cole’s It's All a Blur Tour - Big as the What?

On February 2, just days before Super Bowl LVIII, Drake and J. Cole kicked off their massive co-headline tour in Tampa, Florida, and filled the Amalie Arena with football-inspired fanfare: There was a marching band, cheerleaders, a locker room stage, and even live commentary from ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith. Throughout the night, the longtime friends and hip-hop heavyweights drew parallels between rap and sports, particularly each industry’s inherently competitive nature (“You do your best to make people happy,” Drake told fans. “You do your best to compete”). But the show has plenty to offer those who are less athletically inclined, including several eye-popping props and special effects (among them: a giant floating bra, a replica of Drake’s personal plane, and an enormous sculpture of Travis Scott’s head that shoots lasers from its eyes). This playlist reflects the songs from J. Cole’s portion of the show.
