Piedmont E-Biking & Biking Gastronomy Adventure

May 28 - June 3, 2024

“Piemonte is one of the most beautiful and yet unknown wine regions I have seen on all my travels.” Allan WRight, Zephyr Adventures founder and owner

Piedmont (Piemonte in Italian) is a large province in the northwest of Italy that runs from Switzerland and the Alps in the north almost down to the Ligurian Sea in the south. Bordered on the west by France, with Turin as its major city, it is only a short distance to the major airport in Milan. But it is the relatively small wine-growing region of Langhe that we have found so enticing in this region of one of our favorite countries.

The Langhe wine-growing region is beautiful. Unending slopes of vineyard after vineyard give it a scenic beauty not found in most other wine regions of Italy. The hills of the region accent the beauty, with occasional forts or palaces on top. Small, stone villages and enchanting small cities dot the region. In fact, this is such a beautiful area of the world that it was named a UNESCO world heritage site in 2014.

Piedmont E-Biking or Biking

The hills of Piemonte do come with a price for those on two wheels. The area is hilly and we recommend this tour for e-bikers if you are not fit and used to riding hills. Which works great, because our travelers are beginning to love e-bikes (as was the case on our recent Across Italy Adventure ), for a number of reasons:

  • Couples or friends can ride together who are not at the same fitness level
  • The multiple battery settings allow you to work hard or cruise along, as you wish
  • No more walking up hills and pushing your bike!

Perhaps most importantly, e-bikes allow us to reach the amazing castles, wineries, and ancient towns which lie on the tops of those beautiful hills.

Piedmont’s Gastronomy

In addition to its scenic beauty, the Langhe region of Piedmont boasts an amazing amount of local food and wine experiences. On our Piedmont E-Biking Adventure we:

  • Tour the oldest hazelnut processing factory in the world, tasting hazelnut cakes made by the mother of the family owners.
  • Watch a truffle hunter and his dog in action, before trying a number of truffle-infused products
  • Visit a large microbrewery with a huge outdoor beer garden housed in an old industrial farm
  • Enjoy a progressive walking tour dinner of Alba, where we taste local cheeses, meats, and breads
  • Tour a hand-made ravioli facility and eat lunch at a cafe featuring the three types of raviolis made next door
  • Taste wines at several local wineries

On this tour, we plan our days to include one or more gastronomic stops each day. This is a tour focused as much on the activities as the riding.

Ancient Towns and Small Cities

We visit several famous wine towns on our tour, including Barolo and Barbaresco, known for their rich red wines made from Nebbiolo grapes. Roccaverano (cheeses), Bossolasco (the city of roses), and Neive (one of “the most beautiful villages in Italy”) are all on our route. We overnight in Cortemelia (the hazelnut capital of Italy); Monforte (a beautiful hillside wine town); and Alba (boasting an amazing historic walking center as well as Roman ruins). The towns are a crucial part of this tour, as they provide cute shops, delicious lunch venues, and plenty of pre-dinner or post-dinner wine bars.

Join Us On Our Piedmont E-Biking & Biking Adventure

The Langhe region of Piedmont is a special place. Yet we are always surprised by the relative obscurity among travelers (except to wine connoisseurs) and the lack of tourists in most of the region. The area is perfect for a tour in which you can enjoy the real Italy from the comfort of your e-bike.

Trip Highlights

  • Zoom up hills and across valleys as we explore one of the most beautiful areas of Italy, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Tour a hazelnut factory, watch a truffle hunter and his dog, visit a hand made ravioli maker, and taste the menu cheeses in the area
  • Enjoy the rich, wonderful flavors of Barolo, Barbaresco, and other wines of the area
  • Stay in traditional agricultural village of Cortemelia, the hilltop wine town of Montforte, and the small Roman-era city of Alba
  • Enjoy one of the most amazing regions of Italy, one that is lesser known and comes without the crowds of more traditional areas

Our Piedmont E-Biking Adventure will have two and sometimes three routes per day. However, given most people will be on e-bikes, we expect the standard route each day to be most popular. Only these distances are listed below.

Day 1: Alba to Cortemelia

We meet after lunch in the town of Alba, which has good connections to both Milan and Turin, allowing you to arrive that morning or the night before. We will spend time on introductions and an overview of the tour before we introduce you to your e-bike or bike, if you are renting locally. Then it is off on small roads that wind through vineyards, often with gorgeous views over the valley below. In Cortemelia, a small town with a nice walking center situated on both sides of the river that cuts through the region. We have time for a tour and tasting at the Rosello Winery , where we will meet Giullo Rosello of the founding family. Dinner tonight is a treat, as our hotel is owned by a relatively famous chef (who has worked with Michelle Obama and other celebrities); we will enjoy a 13-dish gourmet tasting menu of regional dishes provided by Chef Carlo.

Main Route Distance: 33 KM

Day 2: Cortemelia Loop

Our loop ride today takes us to three very interesting towns. The small village of Bergolo is known both for its ancient stone houses and the artwork hung on the walls of local buildings. Gottasecca is a cute hilltop village that has a number of nice restaurants that are perfect for lunch. Roccaverano is known locally as the "cheese capital of Italy" but we also love it for its views over the entire region. In all, it is 41 kilometers of culture and scenery. Returning to Cortemelia, we will visit the Fratelli Caffa hazelnut factory, the first of its type in the world, for a tour and tasting. We will join Chef Carlo at the hotel once again, this time for a demonstration of two traditional regional dishes, followed by another delicious dinner.

Main Route Distance: 41 KM

Day 3: Cortemelia to Monforte

We depart after breakfast but only ride a short distance before our first stop, a visit to Antichi Sapori di Langa. There we will watch a truffle hunter and his dog in action, before tasting a few truffle-infused products. The ride today is beautiful, as we depart the agricultural lands around Cortemelia and rich the vineyard-dense area of Monforte. Bossolasco, the "village of the roses", is a great lunch spot with rose-flavored gelato a favorite post-lunch treat. Upon reaching Monforte, we'll check into our very central hotel, Grappolo del Oro, and have time to relax before walking to the local Conterno - Fantino Winery for a tasting. Dinner tonight is at Le Case della Saracca , which serves traditional local dishes but where the highlight is the amazing wine cellar, built into the hillside and with two secret passages reach by revolving wine-laden panels.

Main Route Distance: 46 KM

Day 4: Monforte Loop

Our riding distance today is a bit shorter, in large part because there are so many things to see and do in this area. First on the list are the Pastificio Pressenda and Achille Viglione. The Pastificio Pressenda is a factory that makes all its pastas by hand! Open since 1931, we will get a brief tour of the process and have the opportunity to purchase pasta. Right next door is Achille Viglione , a winery where we will do a formal tasting followed by a sampling of three pastas from the factory. Next on the route is the Castello di Grinzane Cavour , a castle which you can tour and which also houses a regional "enoteca" or wine tasting and purchasing shop. It is then on to Barolo, a fairy tale-like village and one of the main wine towns in the region. All this before we return to Cortemelia for a few hours rest. In the evening, we will shuttle for dinner to the nearby Baladin Birreria , a successful microbrewery housed in an old agricultural factory that features a fantastic beer garden as well as funky indoor seating.

Main Route Distance: 36 KM

Day 5: Monforte to Alba

Today's ride is actually two separate parts. First we do a 17-kilometer loop ride to the town of Dogliani, which has a morning market. We'll hop off our bikes to explore the various stalls from local farmers. (You can skip this loop if you wish.) We'll then check out of our hotel and begin our ride to Alba. We'll stop at another castle today, this time for a guided tour of the Castello di Serralunga . Serralunga itself is a great little town, perfect for lunch, with not one but two loop roads that ring the castle placed on a hill in the middle. Upon reaching Alba, we'll check into our hotel. Alba is such a great small city with a huge walking center that we will shake things up and do a walking appetizer tour that includes the Tartufi Morra , the Luiset Salumeria , and the La Delizie di Montagna cheese shop. Dinner tonight is on your own - if you need another bite.

Total Distance: 49 KM

Day 6: Alba Loop Ride

We hit a threesome of fantastic towns on our loop route today. Nieve boasts the label as one of the "most beautiful towns in Italy". Barbaresco is an enchanting small town that is world famous for its red wines. And in Costigliole d’Asti we will see another pasta demonstration, this time a one-man show where Simone will show us his craft and then prepare us a three-ravioli lunch (cheese, meat, and mushroom). Back in Alba, dinner tonight will start with a bicerin , a local drink of hot chocolate with added coffee and cream, at Monviso Coffee Factory. We'll then visit local beer bar Il Malpensanti, a very alternative drinking establishment, for a pre-dinner beer. Dinner itself is at Conterosso, with dining tables set up in the ancient street, and dessert is at Alberto Marchetti Gelateria . In all, a splendid walking tour of Alba establishments.

Total Distance: 50 KM

Day 7: Departure

We will do a final morning walking tour of Alba, learning about the Etruscan (pre-Roman) people, the Roman ruins in town, and Alba's role in World War Two. We'll then check out and say our good byes. You are free to depart by train to the airport in Milan or wherever your travels take you.

Trip Accommodations

We spend two nights each in three hotels in three different towns.

e bike tour piemonte

Arrival & Departure

We will meet just after lunch at the Hotel Calissano in the town of Alba in the heart of the Piemonte wine region. Alba has excellent train connections to both Milan and Turin and so is an easy place to reach.

We depart mid-morning from Alba, at which point you are free to travel further by train or head to one of the local airports.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

  • Two Zephyr guides (one local) accompany each trip, with a third added as necessary.
  • Double occupancy lodging is included. If you are traveling solo, you may ask us to find a traveler to share a room with you but will need to pay a single supplement to have your own room if we cannot match you.
  • Five dinners (one dinner on your own), one lunch, and all breakfasts are included. Gratuity for these meals is also included. In general, we leave lunches open so that you have time to explore and enjoy the local flavors en route.
  • All your transportation is included once you meet your guides on the first day.
  • All group activities are included.
  • NOT INCLUDED Beverages during meals, desserts, lunches, one dinner, gratuities to your guides, personal expenses, bike rentals, and travel to and from the destination.

Best time to visit

Piemonte in the north does not get as hot as some other regions of Italy, so this tour can really be great anytime between May and October. You will have greener fields and more daylight in the May through June time frame but ripe vineyards and golden wheat fields in the fall.

Extending your vacation

Most people will fly into Milan and spending extra time there is certainly an option. You might also look into open-jaw flights, flying into Milan and out of either Turin or Genoa, although neither airport has as many flights as Milan. If you decide to rent a car, there is a ton to do north of the tour area in the Alps.

Ability Level

This Adventure is rated  Moderate due primarily to the planned use of e-bikes. E-bikes are great and have some awesome advantages. They turn the hills of this route into very manageable aspects of the ride. If you wish to test yourself, however, you are more than welcome to ride a standard hybrid or road bike!

Type of people who will enjoy this tour

This tour is as much about the scenery, the hill towns, and the gastronomic experiences as it is about the biking. We recommend this for those looking for a well-rounded vacation rather than a serious biking experience - although you will get plenty of mileage on this tour!

Changes to Your Itinerary

While everything under “What is Included” will remain the same, the actual restaurants, hotels, and activities listed in our itineraries are subject to modifications. Changes that are out of our control are common – a restaurant closes or loses its awesome chef, a winery changes its visiting hours, a hotel gets remodeled, a road or trail undergoes construction. You are entrusting us to create an outstanding vacation for you and so it is possible we may take the liberty of making necessary changes (even at the last minute, during the guides’ scout trip) to the itinerary that will improve your overall trip experience.

You are running a great business and Tom and I would be thrilled to give you a recommendation if you ever need one. Thanks for the wonderful memories. Enjoy the rest of your summer.

You will cross the ancient Roman village of Pollenzo, now the home and famous for the University of Gastronomic Sciences focused on gastronomy and food tourism. Day 6 Villa d’Amelia, Benevello

Framed by the unique hills of the Barolo vineyards, Villa d’Amelia features 37 finely furnished rooms and suites, whose refined and contemporary style are the perfect complement to the building’s classic flair. The Travertine marble bathroom in each room furnishes a welcoming space equipped with all comforts.

Our six day tour in the Piedmont was 5-star spectacular, 10/10. The routes were challenging, beautiful and carefully curated to climb on quiet roads and descend on high-quality pavement. The equipment was first rate (Ultegra race bikes) and well maintained. The hotels and meals capture the atmosphere and gastronomy of the region. I especially enjoyed spending multiple days in a single hotel with loop rides. This allows you to get on the bike earlier and relax into your afternoon without checkin/checkout/moving. The multiple rides from the same place were very different and not at all repetitive. Great design. Bike Tour Sardinia provides exceptional service before, during and after the ride. For us, this was. a mechanical (our fault) that was addressed within the hour. It was also adjusting the tour when we got a last minute invite to visit a friend’s winery for an evening.

Bicycle Touring & MTB

Easy trails for families and for those who love authentic flavours, between villages and vineyards,  rice fields and towns. Great climbs of the Giro d'Italia (Tour Italy, also known as the Giro )  for racing bike enthusiasts and ups and downs in nature for mountain bikes. The two-wheels homeland is here: you are in Piedmont, the region that has made history of Italian cycling and the promised land of cyclotourits.

Risaie Ciclabili is a 27 km route perfect for the whole family in spring and autumn to discover the rice fields beauty and the Vercelli area . The Lake Orta Tour , in Novara area, is also quite easy: 35.50 km from Gozzano crossing the cliff of Madonna del Sasso ,  Omegna lakeside, Villa Crespi in Orta San Giulio. In the Biella area , enthusiasts  will enjoy  the Biella-Oropa climb, the Pantani Mountain of the Giro d'Italia : 12 km to reach the 1150 metres of the Sanctuary of Oropa , a UNESCO heritage site, the destination of six arrivals of the Corsa Rosa (Giro d’Italia nickname). Do you prefer a hilly landscape? Here is the challenging route Dalle Dolci Terre alle Langhe , from Acqui Terme to Canelli, passing through historical centres, regional wine shops, famous wineries, distilleries. How not to mention the Limone-Monesi Salt Road , in the Cuneo area , the most beautiful country road in Europe from the Alps to the sea: 39 km of dirt road from Limone Piemonte to Briga Alta, between 1,800 and 2,100 metres above sea level on an old military road. For the more trained road bike enthusiasts, the typical Colle delle Finestre , in the Turin area , is an opportunity to try their hand at a tough climb of the Giro d'Italia : 17 km, 1700 metres of altitude difference and 33 hairpin bends between Susa Valley and Chisone Valley, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes.

Among the thematic routes, don't miss the UNESCO Grand Tour by bike , a 600 km loop that crosses royal palaces, the Sacred Mountains and the World Heritage landscapes, the wildlife reserves of Man and the Biosphere project, Creative Cities and Geoparks. The artistic-spiritual itineraries linked to the Churches at Open Doors project ( Chiese a porte aperte ) are worth a visit.

Continue on to meet a small Barbaresco producer for an intimate luncheon and wine tasting set against a backdrop of breathtaking views at a lovingly-restored cascina (Piedmontese farmhouse). After lunch, challenge yourself with the ride back to the hotel or opt for a transfer for some extra pampering time at the spa. Tonight we’ll visit our friend Cristina for a convivial evening of preparing local dishes that unlock the secrets of Piedmontese cuisine.

Meals : Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Santo Stefano, Montabone, Rocchetta Palafea Accomplished: 34 miles / 55 km, elevation gain: 3,323 feet / 1,013 meters Shorter Option: 20 miles / 32 km, elevation gain: 1,876 feet / 572 meters Accommodations:  Relais San Maurizio

Hazelnut Ride

Ride into the wildest parts of the Langhe today: impossibly narrow roads, crumbling medieval towers, and endless hazelnut trees line the route. The remote nature of the area made it a hotbed of Resistance activity during WWII and, to this day, monuments to these partisan fighters punctuate the hilly landscape. Given the abundance of nocciole (hazelnuts) here, our ultimate destination today is our friend Isabella’s hazelnut farm for a hazelnut-themed lunch of sweet and savory dishes. The ride back follows a ridgeline with some of the most spectacular vistas in the region. Tonight, we’ll visit the Barbaresco-producing village of Neive for a chance to taste the full range of Nebbiolo wines at a hip new restaurant.

Meals : Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Santo Stefano, Scorrone, Castino Accomplished : 32 miles / 52 km, elevation gain: 3,293 feet / 1,004 meters Shorter Option: 28 miles / 45 km, elevation gain: 2,640 feet / 805 meters Accommodations:  Relais San Maurizio

Truffles, Cheeses, and Nebbiolo

Say goodbye to San Maurizio as we ride to the Barolo region. Our route follows the crest of the Langhe ridgeline with views towards the Apennines and the Alps. The hills here are lined with hazelnuts and vineyards, with prized Piedmontese truffles hidden below ground. Our friend Silvio—a truffle hunter and cheesemaker—is a keeper of Piedmont’s gourmet treasures, and we’ll taste artisanal pecorino at his family farmhouse. After one more climb, our reward is a mouthwatering plate of tajarin pasta at our friend Massimo’s hilltop  trattoria . A final thrilling descent brings us to our hotel in the medieval village of Monforte. This evening, you are free to choose a local restaurant for dinner in town.

Meals : Breakfast / Lunch Destinations : Mango, Benevello, Monforte d’Alba Accomplished : 29 miles / 46 km, elevation gain: 3,460 feet / 1,055 meters Longer Option: 35 miles / 56 km, elevation gain: 4,005 feet / 1,221 meters Accommodations:  Villa Beccaris

The Barolo Loop

Pedal out of town and through the vineyards to Grinzane Cavour, the castle and historic home of Italy’s first Prime Minister. A cappuccino stop is the fuel we need to climb to the wine villages of La Morra and Barolo, home to some of the most prized wine-growing terrain in the world—a map of its vineyards could be compared to a patchwork quilt of famous Barolos. Of course, our destination is a winery where we’ll celebrate the end of the ride with a private lunch and ample pours of some recent vintages. This evening, reconvene for a short walk through Monforte’s cobbled streets to a wonderful farewell dinner paired with world-class local wines.

Meals : Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Grinzane Cavour, La Morra, Monforte Accomplished : 29 miles / 46 km, elevation gain: 2,998 feet / 914 meters Longer Option: 36 miles / 58 km, elevation gain: 3,729 feet / 1,137 meters Accommodations: Villa Beccaris

Off to Asti

Challenge yourself with an optional morning loop ride or take a last stroll through the town of Monforte. Enjoy a final breakfast in the  limonaia . Your guides will then transfer you to the train station in Asti as you head on to your next destination.

After breakfast in about 30 minutes by car you will reach Vogogna. Independent visit of this important fortified center nestled in the Ossola Valley, an integral part and seat of the Val Grande National Park. In the central medieval square it is possible to visit the fourteenth-century Palazzo Pretorio which preserves the Celtic Mascherone inside; a little further on the church of Santa Marta dating back to the sixteenth century, the primitive place of prayer of the militiamen of the fortress. From the Visconti Castle, today the site of events and demonstrations, it is possible to see the remains of the fortress, a further bastion of the valley. Coming down from the castle, the parish church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus appears majestic and, next to it, the former church of Ss. Giacomo and Cristoforo, with its richly carved sixteenth-century portal. Also not to be missed is a tasting of the savory Ossola cheese accompanied with typical wines. In the afternoon, after about 30 km, you will reach Lake Orta. You will overnight at the HOTEL L’APPRODO in PETTENASCO located on the shores of the magical lake (variations of hotels and locations are possible depending on actual availability during the season).

After breakfast you will meet your guide who will accompany you to discover the magnificent Borgo. Orta San Giulio stands in a splendid position on the green peninsula of Sacro Monte, on the eastern shore of Lake Orta, facing the island of San Giulio. The picturesque village is crossed by narrow and winding streets, overlooked by ancient Baroque houses and palaces with arcaded courtyards and wrought iron balconies. On the central square is the Community building, with a large portico. The town is dominated by the Sacro Monte di Orta, about 400 meters of altitude, included by UNESCO in the list of its World Heritage Sites. Small yet rich in historical evidence, the Island of San Giulio retains a mysterious and particular charm that makes it truly unique. You will reach it in a few minutes of navigation. In the center stands the imposing bulk of the Benedictine monastery "Mater Ecclesiae", where the cloistered nuns spend their day in prayer and in the long and complex restoration of precious fabrics. Pilgrims have been coming here for centuries to visit the splendid Romanesque church of San Giulio, dedicated to the first evangelizer of Cusio. The saint's body rests in the crypt, built in the Baroque period, in a sumptuous silver and crystal case. Of particular value are the early medieval finds preserved in the adjacent local museum. Leaving the basilica, it is impossible not to walk along the circular path that surrounds the island, getting lost among the ancient houses of the canons transformed over the centuries into elegant private residences and surrounded by small, seductive flower gardens. In the late afternoon, after an abundant hour on the road (about 80 km) you will reach the Biellese area. You will overnight at IL RELAIS SANTO STEFANO in Sandigliano (hotel and location variations are possible depending on actual availability during the season).

After breakfast with your car you will reach Candelo (about 6 km far) where you will meet the guide who will take you to discover the Ricetto di Candelo. Walking through its cobbled streets is like breathing history, it is like “going up and down” through the Middle Ages to discover moments linked to peasant culture, it is like getting lost in the magic of a unique place. The center of the town consists of a group of buildings of mostly fourteenth-century origin, fortified by a circle of herringbone pebbles, which served as agricultural storage and refuge for the population in case of danger. Pseudo-pentagonal in plan, with five road axes intersected by two orthogonal streets, it has corners protected by circular towers; access is through a tower door with a pointed arch. On the square in front of the entrance is the Palazzo del Principe, a sort of three-storey strong house with a keep, built at the end of the fifteenth century. Canestrelli, very thin, irregularly shaped sweets, typical of this area, also date back to medieval times. In the afternoon, passing by Turin, you will reach Pinerolo where you will overnight at the HOTEL BARRAGE 4 * (hotel and location variations are possible depending on actual availability during the season)

After breakfast with your car you will climb up to the 1,400 meters of Usseaux. A welcoming alpine village in the Alta Val Chisone, Usseaux is part of three natural parks and preserves elements of the typical Alpine architecture and the traditional "patouà" language, a variant of the Oc language. Murals and sundials enrich the town and will guide you towards the characteristic Piazza del Sole. The peasant tradition lives on in the fountains, wash houses, mills and ovens; imposing, in the capital, the church of San Pietro; in the hamlet of Balboutet there is the church of San Bartolomeo, rebuilt in the mid-nineteenth century on the remains of an ancient church. Not to be missed: - a visit to the villages and mills; - excursions in the mountains and on the Assietta road; - tastings of the Violets cheese, the Plaisentif accompanied by local bread. At lunch you cannot miss a stop in one of the typical restaurants where you can enjoy an excellent mountain menu. In the afternoon you will reach Saluzzo (about 70 km away). Along the way we recommend a stop at the Staffarda Abbey, an impressive abbey complex founded in the 12th century in Romanesque style that includes the church, monastic buildings and nine farmhouses. Founded between 1122 and 1138 on the territory of the ancient Marquisate of Saluzzo, the Benedictine Cistercian Abbey reached in a few decades a considerable economic importance as a place of collection, processing and exchange of the products of the surrounding countryside, made fertile by the monks with extensive and complex remediation works. Of the abbey complex, the Church is particularly appreciated, with the Polyptych by Pascale Oddone and the sixteenth-century wooden group of the Crucifixion, the Cloister, the Refectory, with traces of a painting depicting "The Last Supper", the Chapter Room, the Guest House; the other buildings make up the so-called "concentric" of Staffarda, that is the village, which still retains the historic architectural structures functional to agricultural activity, such as the covered market on the square in front of the Abbey and the farmhouses. Overnight at the ANTICO PODERE PROPANO (hotel and location variations are possible depending on actual availability during the season)

After breakfast, going up the Po Valley you will reach the areas where the head of the homonymous river is located. On your own you can visit Ostana, the smallest of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Ostana is a sort of enchanted world to be discovered. A small town of scattered hamlets, it enjoys a sunny and panoramic position on the Monviso group. Named for the first time in 1322 (when Manfredo IV di Saluzzo invested the Marquis Manfredino and Oddone del Carretto also in the fiefdom of Austane, to pay off a debt of 9 thousand Genoese lire), it is an alpine corner of Occitania that invites slow walks. The best way to find out is in fact walking through its villages, a tour that takes four hours and requires the use of snowshoes in winter. In the afternoon you will return to Saluzzo, capital for over four centuries, from 1142 to 1548, of the marquisate to which it gave its name. Saluzzo is a city with a fascinating history. Among its scenic streets, palaces and churches preserve real artistic relics, produced in a long period in which in these lands the autumn of the Middle Ages was intertwined with the explosion of Renaissance art. A real cocktail of cultures in a place that for centuries has been an important crossroads of men, goods and ideas. For dinner we have booked you a table at the pub of the Brewery della Granda. With a Piedmontese breed meat burger combined with one of their delicious craft beers you will end this fantastic day in the best possible way. Overnight at the ANTICO PODERE PROPANO (hotel and location variations are possible depending on actual availability during the season)

After breakfast, another day another valley, to be visited completely independently in order to dedicate yourself to the activities you prefer. You will go up with your car to the border between Piedmont and France. A village of Occitan culture awaits you with a slate heart, with slate roofs, stones and houses with ancient beams. Sheltered in a very strategic position that keeps it safe from the dangers of avalanches, in Chianale you can breathe the magical scent of the Alps. The fairytale touch is given by the larches resting in the snow next to houses heated by fireplaces. The Provencal culture of the troubadours still lives in the area, there is the largest Cimbri forest in Europe. And there is the Chemin Royal which led all the way to France. No war in the village. The Catholic church and the Calvinist temple looked upon each other in peace. Chianale is a fraction of the municipality of Pontechianale in the province of Cuneo. The town closes the Alta Val Varaita with its lake surrounded by woods and pine forests. Going up, you arrive at the beautiful village of Chianale, all in stone located at 1,800 meters high which is located on the ancient Chemin Royal, the salt road also went straight to France. Along a very steep climb (which can only be done in summer) you can reach the Colle dell’Agnello at 2,748 meters and from below you reach the Queyras region. On your way back we recommend stopping by at: - SAMPEYRE, a village famous for the Baìo, a traditional Occitan festival that takes place every five years, - MELLE, a town famous for the production of typical cow cheeses (the Tumin del Mel) and a compulsory stop to taste the hay-flavored ice cream of the small "Fioca" laboratory, - BROSSASCO one of the major production centers of Rustic Furniture, - PIASCO seat of the famous Victor Salvi harp factory which houses in addition to the production workshops also a beautiful museum dedicated to this noble instrument. At the end of the day you will reach Bra, the capital of cheese and slow food. The overnight is provided at HOTEL CANTINE ASCHERI 4 * (hotel and location variations are possible depending on actual availability during the season).

After breakfast early in the morning you will reach the truffle ground where Piercarlo and his Tabui (in Piedmontese this word indicates the truffle hunter's faithful dog) await you. Going through the woods in search of truffles, be it black or white, is undoubtedly one of the most exciting and intense experiences that the Langhe area can offer. Then, along a scenic road that caresses the Alta Langa area, you will arrive in Monforte d'Alba which you can visit independently. Of Roman origin, Monforte is located in a privileged position on one of the most majestic hills of the Langhe. The village, clinging to sunny slopes, has a medieval layout, with narrow streets that rise towards the square of the Antica Chiesa, where the oratory of Sant’Agostino and the Scarampi palace are located, obtained from the structures of a medieval castle. The main square, shaped like an amphitheater, is a real open-air auditorium. In the late afternoon in about half an hour you will reach Neive. The overnight stay is foreseen at the COZY SMALL HOTEL AL PALAZZO ROSSO (hotel and location variations are possible depending on the actual availability during the season).

After breakfast, you will meet a representative of the Tourist Office who will accompany you to discover Neive. A suggestive walk through the alleys of one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Among baroque houses, churches and villas with splendid gardens we will climb up to the castle floor where you can enjoy, climbing the renovated Clock Tower, an unforgettable view of the UNESCO World Heritage areas of Langhe, Roero and Monferrato. A stop at the Museum of the Wild Woman, a tribute to the work of Romano Levi and his sister Lidia who for over sixty years, continuing the tradition of their ancestors, have produced a unique Grappa, embellished by the colorful poetic labels drawn by hand by Romano. The walk will end with a visit to the historic cellars of the Neive Castle. The visit to the cellars begins in the ancient access, where the centuries-old wine press preserves the historical memory of the work done. This is followed by the entrance to the cellars carved into the rock, where the wines rest at a naturally controlled temperature and in large and small wooden barrels. These are important wines that come from an area appreciated for the production of a great red from Piedmont: Barbaresco. There will be tasting sessions, in the beautiful garden in front of the cellar or in the wine shop. In the late afternoon, after about an hour drive, you will reach Monferrato. Overnight at the LOCANDA MARTELLETTI in Cocconato (hotel and location variations are possible depending on actual availability during the season)

After breakfast, time at leisure to discover the Borgo. Cocconato is a small but lively village that can boast one of the best preserved and restored historic centers in the Asti area. The town winds from the central and lively Piazza Cavour, animated by cafes, restaurants and shops selling typical products, from which you can go up towards the upper part of the town along via Roma, between ancient houses with balconies with wrought iron railings and carved wooden doors, up to the 15th century Palazzo Comunale, the most significant monument of the locality and a rare example of civil architecture in the Gothic style of Monferrato. The building, with arcades on the ground floor, follows the course of the road and has three floors above ground on the side towards the street and two on the side of the courtyard. Continuing along the cobbled streets climbing uphill, you arrive at the parish church, dedicated to Santa Maria della Consolazione, in a panoramic position over the town and the surrounding hills. In the early afternoon, leaving the province of Asti to enter the province of Alessandria, in about forty minutes by car, you will reach Rosignano Monferrato. Upon reaching your destination, a visit to a historic winery with its characteristic infernot awaits you, followed by a tasting accompanied by a platter of local products. Overnight at I CASTAGNONI SMART RESORT in Rosignano Monferrato (variations of hotels and locations are possible depending on actual availability during the season)

After breakfast, check out and autonomous visit of the Borgo di Cella Monte. Built in sandstone, a reminder of the sea of millions of years ago, this small Piedmontese village lies on the gentle slopes of Monferrato. Cella Monte is located in the province of Alessandria in that part of Piedmont famous all over the world for its excellent vineyards and devotion to wine production. Immersing yourself in its alleys, you may happen to observe shells inside the walls: they are not the work of man, but of nature. Millions of years ago there was the sea here and the Monferrato hills were its archipelagos. As the water withdrew, the sandstone remained, a stone with which the houses of its five hundred inhabitants were built. The deeper you go into the walk, the more you realize you are walking through an open-air museum, which has remained exactly the same as when it was built: all around, the soft hills on which a group of houses occasionally sprouts, between the wonderful ups and downs of the vineyards that look like an impressionist painting. Lunch in a typical restaurant (drinks not included) and end of services.
