Madman's Journey

Ultimate Dandeli Travel Guide

dandeli travel guide

Living close to a town rich with its flora and fauna for five years, I was bound to see the tranquil nature of Dandeli. With the majestic Kali river passing through the dense forests, an ecosystem with a variety of exotic animals stands in the village.

Not to mention, it also serves as a hotspot for white water rafting and many other watersports. Here goes my post on the Dandeli travel guide .

I visited Dandeli with some friends years back. I distinctively remember calling the homestays, arranging the budget, and all the activities we’d do. It was the first itinerary I’d planned out and it turned out a marvelous adventure.

However, there’s much more to do in Dandeli now. One of the latest attractions is the Dandeli Crocodile Park, Karnataka’s first official Crocodile Park. With my experience in glimpsing the scenic spot, I hope this Dandeli travel guide helps you travel better.

Table of Contents

5 Top Places to Visit in Dandeli

Travelers across India visit Dandeli for its water activities, wildlife safari, trekking, and ultimately take a break from their busy lives. Here are the 5 best places I clustered that cover all the things to do in Dandeli.

Kali River

1. Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary

Dandeli travel tips. For bird enthusiasts, this sanctuary homes around 200 bird species including the famous Indian Hornbill. However, another reason to visit the Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary is for the Wildlife safari organized by Karnataka’s forest department. They take you around the Kali Tiger Reserve (Anshi National Park) with buggies in scheduled time slots.

Expect to get a glimpse of more exotic creatures like elephants, deers, wild boars, sloth bears, tigers, and even the rare black panther.

2. Kali River

The infamous Kali river is the very reason for Dandeli’s recognition by tourists across the state. Don’t miss out on the water activities like kayaking, coracle rides, zorbing, ziplining, and of course, the 12 kilometers stretch white water rafting. I’d also recommend staying by the river where you can wake up overlooking the water stream!

3. Kulgi Nagzari Valley and other Trekking spots

Dandeli’s one of the savored trekking spots among the districts of Uttar Karnataka. They’re famous today and they have been for generations. The Kulgi Nature Camp run by the forest department hosts the 15-kilometers trek to the Kulgi-Nagzari Valley. While this is the longest trek for 8 hours, most trekking spots in Dandeli are relatively shorter.

4. Backwaters of Supa Dam

Walk on the picturesque spot of the backwaters of the Supa Dam in the evening. The backwaters road is blocked from end to end and is only available to walk across. It’s best to visit when the dams are full otherwise all you’ll find is dirt and sand for stretches with no water in sight.

While there isn’t much to do here, it’s great to breathe in the air after a long day of water activities in the Kali river.

5. Dandeli Crocodile Park

This is the latest edition of the places to visit in Dandeli. Visit the Dandeli Crocodile park, the latest addition to the Dandeli wildlife sanctuary. It serves as an animal shelter for various animals and it recently became open to visitors as an attraction with an amusement park. Oh, and it’s the first official crocodile park in Karnataka.

Budget for Dandeli Trip

How much does a Dandeli trip cost? Depending on how one spends on their trip, the budget varies for different travelers. As the spot has a wide range of hotels, activities, and rental services to pick from, the Dandeli trip cost for a 2 days trip can range from Rs.4000 to Rs.15,000 per person.

Here’s how one spends on a Dandeli excursion taking into account the essentials of transport, activities, and accommodation.

Keep in mind that watersport activities, rafting, and trekking aren’t included in this.

Most people book packages including watersport activities, campfires, and meals where it’s hard to tell how much does the standalone prices of accommodation are. The higher budget accommodations include water activities along with meals. Thus the start of meal prices with Rs. 0.

A moderate budget trip to Dandeli, even along with a package should be around Rs. 7000 – 8000 for 2 days. That’s how much we spent the last time, visiting Dandeli from Bangalore .

River Rafting Budget

Kayaking in Dandeli

Dandeli travel tips : The cost of kayaking, zorbing, jacuzzi, river crossing differs from one adventure camp to another. Some price them individually while others have a package that includes all for a fair price. The 12 km river rafting stretch stands popular among all.

It’s the most expensive activity from Rs. 500-1350 (typically more through a 3rd party) depending on the distance range and the rapid grade. But going for the long-distance rafting, I’d highly recommend – you’re in Dandeli afterall!

  • Short-range rafting, 1-2 km (Approx. 30 min) -Rs. 500
  • Mid-range rafting, 5 km (1-2 hr) – Rs. 1200
  • Long range rafting, 7.5 km – Rs. 1350 – Source: Dandeli.org .

As mentioned, the prices and distance of rafting vary based on the travel agency, season, and difficulty of the experience. For beginners, several grade II rafting is available while grade III is difficult to get and requires expertise.

Dandeli Travel Guide: Where to Stay

Dandeli travel tips – With Dandeli known by most locals and less by people outside, many local sites offer accommodation here. But I’d recommend booking from a trusted source where they provide all essential details on the stay. One of my favorite sites, Booking.com lets you book first and pay after you check out the hotel.

Here are some reputable stays for a family vacation I picked out for you along with their pricing, distance from the city, and inclusive features:

Though some state summers are hot and itchy for vacation in Dandeli, I believe it’s more pleasant for water activities under the cool canopies of the thick jungles.

Budget homestays in Dandeli

For all types of travelers, there are lavish family resorts to backpacking jungle homestays in Dandeli. As a budget traveler myself, I stayed in a homestay in Dandeli with pleasant home food for meals. Read my guide on choosing homestays in Dandeli .

For budget solo travelers, here are some great jungle camps I picked out i.e. homestays starting from Rs. 2000 :

Trekking in Dandeli

Dandeli travel tips: The best trekking routes in Dandeli are the Kulgi-Nagzari Valley trek, Potoli-Shiroli Trek, and Kavala Caves.

As mentioned earlier, the Kulgi-Nagzari valley trek is the longest trek (and a high difficulty one) that runs for a 15-kilometer stretch. It’s an 8-hour trek guided and organized by the forest department-owned Kulgi Nature Camp.

Potoli-Shiroli Trekking Route : This is a medium-difficulty trek of 13 km that lasts for 5-6 hours.

Kavala Caves route : This is the most popular among all Dandeli treks with a 3-4 km (2-3 hrs) range. With the limestone caves originating from volcanic activity, there’s a naturally formed Shivalinga inside. It’s open to tourists to see it inside where you’ll be taken 40 feet through narrow tunnels.

How to Book a Trek?

Apart from the JLR Jungle Lodges site , there’s no separate official booking site for this trek. To request pricing, the only option is to call or meet at their office.

Many tourists book through local travel agents and sites which take care of booking your trek instead. The last I checked, Thrillophilia offered the Kulgi-Nagzari Valley trek for Rs. 990 per head.

Dandeli Travel Guide: What to Pack

There aren’t any hardcore essentials to carry to Dandeli. But some things to pack for Dandeli are:

  • Cash : Online payment services don’t work in many places. You’re lucky if you have network here.
  • First Aid Kit : Keep at least a pack of bandages and the minimal essentials in case of emergencies.
  • Sunscreen – SPF 15 at min: The wildlife safari and rafting are under the scorching heat in summers.
  • Flip-flops or Sandals : Keep a pair of quick release footwear for water rides. Shoes aren’t advised here.
  • Sports shoes : Wear sports footwear when you head out for trekking or cycling in Dandeli.
  • Waterbottle : Hold a drinking waterbottle when you head out for trekking or safari.
  • Plastic Bags : To keep your post-watersport wet clothes.
  • Sets of clothes : Pack clothes according to the length of stay and change of clothes necessary after water rides.

Dandeli Travel Guide: Things to Know Before you Go

Best time to visit dandeli.

Some say the prime time to visit Dandeli is the months of January and February while others say it’s best to visit during the entire windy winter period from October to February.

In contrast to the belief, we visited towards the end of summer in June 2019 avoiding the peak season and experiencing the pleasant climate. Leaving out the rainy season, any time of the year should be fine to visit.

Excluding the rainy monsoon months from July to September, the best time to visit Dandeli is between October and July. To avoid the peaks of winter, visit during the summers from March to June.

How many Days are Sufficient to Visit

2-3 days are more than enough to visit Dandeli. We visited Dandeli for 2 days and we managed to cover most of the watersport activities, visiting the backwaters, a walk through the forests, and a campfire in the evening. Don’t miss out on the river rafting and trekking in Dandeli.

While 2 days are wonderful for a short trip, another extra day will let you cover all the spots visiting the Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary, its Crocodile park, and of course the safari through the dense forests. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot exotic creatures like elephants, rare birds, or even a tiger!

How to Get to Dandeli

Dandeli is well interconnected with its roads. But if you’re getting there by other means, here’s how to get to Dandeli:

By flight : The nearest airports to Dandeli are the Hubli domestic airport (73 km) and the Belgaum airport (87 km). From Hubli, you can come via Dharwad through the Haliyal road and the SH 46. Get there by either by bus or a rented car.

How to reach Dandeli By train : The nearest train junction to Dandeli is the Alnavar junction (34.1 km). From Bangalore, Rani Chenamma express and YPR VSG express are available to Alnavar. While there are only a few trains to Alnavar, another alternative is the major Dharwad Railway Station where many trains pass by from Bangalore, Belgaum, Hubli, and Dhavangere. From here, buses and taxis are available to Dandeli.

How to reach Dandeli from Bangalore

From Bangalore, the preferred route to reach Dandeli is by bus from Yeshwantpur or Anand Rao Circle (Majestic). It’s typically a comfortable overnight journey (9 hr 30 min) with sleeper coach buses.

Use MakeMyTrip or Redbus to book your bus – some trusted availabilities are VRL Travels, Navadurga Prasad, and SRS travels. It costs anywhere between Rs. 550-800 depending on seat availabilities and the bus itself.

The fastest way from Bangalore to Dandeli is to take a domestic flight from the Kempegowda airport to Belgaum or Hubli (approx. 1 hr 30 min) and take a taxi from the airport directly to your stay in Dandeli.

Dandeli Travel Guide: How to Get Around

dandeli near by tourist places

It’s best to have a four-wheeler to get around Dandeli. But there are many local rental services for both bike and car rentals. Before you call up one, request your accommodation or travel agency for transportation. Most budget packages don’t include the transport charges but it’s worth the shot. Well-known accommodations have alliances with transport services, so find out if they can facilitate you.

For a 4-5 seater economy car like Maruti Swift, Rs. 1500 is a decent price per day. Here’s a local cab rental site I found to rent out your cab. Call and request quotes on pricing for your desired dates.

Note : In case you’re driving by yourself, have a backup tire ready for emergencies as it’s tough to find a mechanic when you’re cruising through the woods on narrow roads. Speaking of narrow roads, go for a rental car only if you’re well-versed with driving.

History of Dandeli, Karnataka

Dandeli has a rich history of attracting settlers, with people from various states like Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Jammu, and Kashmir finding employment and making Dandeli their home. This diverse mix of people has earned Dandeli the nickname “Mini India.”

In this Mini India, you’ll encounter friendly, helpful, loyal, and trustworthy individuals who are more than willing to assist you during your visit. If you’re someone who loves to travel, create memories, explore jungles, witness wildlife, and experience the serenity of early mornings in nature, then Dandeli is the perfect destination for your next vacation.

The Love Story Behind Dandeli’s Name

The history of Dandeli is a captivating tale, much like classic love stories such as Romeo and Juliet or Heer and Ranjha. This town owes its name to an intriguing love story involving a man named Dandelappa.

Dandelappa, a loyal and humble servant of the Mirashi landlords, found himself in a unique love story. He fell in love with the lady of the Mirashi family, and she reciprocated his feelings by proposing marriage. However, due to his unwavering loyalty to the landlords, Dandelappa declined the proposal.

In an unfortunate turn of events, the lady falsely accused Dandelappa of inappropriate behavior to her brothers. Believing her, they tragically killed Dandelappa, separating his head and body. The present-day existence of two temples dedicated to him marks the locations where his head and body were laid to rest.

And so, the town was named ‘Dandeli,’ forever memorializing the tragic love story of Dandelappa.

How Dandeli Started to Develop:

Dandeli, a town with a current population of over 71,000 people, is a harmonious place where individuals of various religions like Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Jains, and Sikhs live together peacefully and happily. However, in the 1930s, the scenario was quite different. At that time, Dandeli’s population was only 515, and most of its residents were employed in the forestry department and government sawmill.

During this period, the inhabitants comprised diverse communities such as Konkanis, Devali, Marathas, Kuruba, Lambani, Africans, and Muslims. The settlement was situated on the banks of the Kali river and transformed into an industrial town with the establishment of several companies.

The Indian Plywood Manufacturing Company, which is now closed, was one of the early enterprises. Subsequently, the Lalbhai Ferro-manganese Factory and the renowned West Coast Paper Mill, initiated by the Indian businessman S.K. Bangur Group in 1955, contributed to the town’s industrial development.

Other notable establishments included the Indian Saw Mill and various small industries. The Karnataka Power Corporation also played a significant role in constructing power-generating dams along the Kali river. This period marked the development of Old-Dandeli.\

West Coast PaperMill, Dandeli – Contribution to develop this place:

The recognition of Dandeli by people across India can be attributed to the presence of the West Coast Paper Mill. As news of employment opportunities spread, individuals from various places began migrating to Dandeli. Over the years, Dandeli earned the reputation of being the primary employment hub, especially due to the West Coast Paper Mill. With time, the mill expanded, eventually becoming the largest paper mill in Karnataka.

As more people settled in Dandeli, a ripple effect occurred. Some individuals, inspired by the town’s growth, ventured into starting their own businesses. This gradual development process has led to Dandeli emerging as the adventure capital of South India. The town’s journey from being recognized for the West Coast Paper Mill to becoming a thriving hub of employment and entrepreneurship showcases its remarkable transformation over the years.

Solar Eclipse 2024: Full List of Places That Won't See It After Path Change

T he path of totality for the upcoming solar eclipse has shifted after more accurate calculations were made by a solar eclipse expert, and several areas in the U.S. originally believing they were within the path of totality are now outside of it.

On Monday, April 8, the moon will be positioned so that the entire disc of the sun will be blocked in several states, plunging millions of people into darkness during the early afternoon. The path of totality, i.e. when the sun is entirely blocked out, will start in Mexico and extend across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine before heading over the North Atlantic.

The event is expected to draw large crowds as people head to areas in the path of totality to witness the eclipse. Officials have voiced concerns about stretched public safety resources and an "enormous strain" on local hospitals and congested roadways. At least four states have urged residents to stock up on groceries and gas and to fill medical prescriptions in the days leading up to the eclipse, as it is expected that traffic could overwhelm local roads.

Just a week before the event, eclipse calculations expert John Irwin updated the path of totality map with a slight but significant change. Many locations previously expected to be within the path of totality are now just outside of it, while others that weren't expecting to be included now are.

People living along the path of totality's northern edge through central Texas now have to travel slightly to observe the total eclipse. This includes suburbs northwest of Fort Worth, areas located on the outskirts of Dallas such as parts of Denton, and the Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge. The southern path expands near San Antonio and Austin, but shortly after that, it begins to narrow again through the rest of the U.S.

The solar eclipse path of totality cuts through the southeast corner of Oklahoma. Under the new map, areas like Utica, Bennington, and Tuskahoma could be outside of the path of totality.

Cities along the path of totality's border in the northwest corner of the state could have to travel for the eclipse. For example, less of the Ozark St. Francis National Forest will experience the path of totality. On the southern line of the path, Little Rock is still within the path of totality, but some outskirt cities like Wrightsville may now have less exposure to the eclipse.

In Missouri, the eclipse passes through the southeast corner. Residents in areas outside of St. Louis, like Fayetteville and parts of New Memphis, will now have to travel to see the total eclipse.

Southeastern Illinois is within the path of totality. Areas like Effingham and Paris are impacted by the new map.

The eclipse will occur in a path extending from southwestern Indiana through the central and eastern part of the state. Parts of Turkey Run State Park, Crawfordsville, Frankfort, Kokomo and Fort Wayne are now outside the path of totality.

Part of northern Cincinnati will now be outside the total eclipse line. Columbus and Youngstown also will be affected.

Less of Syracuse will be within the path of totality, as will many other communities like Rome and part of the Black River Wild Forest and the Siamese Ponds Wilderness.

Pennsylvania

The outskirts of Cooperstown, New Lebanon and certain areas of the Allegheny National Forest are now outside of the path, as well as many other communities.

Parts of Barre and Northfield are now outside of the path of totality.

New Hampshire

Mount Cabot and Milan Hill State Park are now outside of the path of totality.

Phillips, New Portland, Solon and part of Lambert Lake are outside of the path of totality.

Even if cities are outside of the path of totality now, they will still be able to observe the eclipse. However, the moon will not fully block the sun in those areas.

"John Irwin's map tries to represent reality more closely than other maps. The eclipse map did not really change: it is just computed in a more accurate way," a spokesperson from Besselian Elements, which published the map, told Newsweek . "John Irwin's eclipse map is computed using a value of the eclipse solar radius slightly larger than the traditional value and it accounts for the topography of both the lunar limb and of Earth. The lunar limb is not smooth but it has a complex profile with mountains and valleys.

"Other eclipse maps use the traditional eclipse solar radius and the eclipse path limits they depict usually do not account for the topography of the lunar limb (they use a smooth lunar limb without mountains or valleys)," the statement added. "Recent experimental determinations support a value slightly larger than the traditional value and John Irwin's map uses its most likely value."

The map is not expected to change again before the eclipse occurs next week.

Magnitude 4.8 earthquake hits NJ, rattles entire tri-state; 4.0 aftershock felt hours later

The u.s. geological survey said the quake hit 3.7 miles east-southeast of califon, in hunterdon county. no damage to buildings or injuries to people were reported. it was the strongest earthquake with an east coast epicenter since 1884, by jennifer millman , tom shea , lauren maroney and jennifer peltz • published april 5, 2024 • updated on april 5, 2024 at 9:53 pm, what to know.

  • A magnitude 4.8 earthquake hit Hunterdon County, New Jersey, at 10:23 a.m. Friday -- and it reverberated across the entire tri-state area; there have been no reports of damaged buildings
  • No injuries were reported; no earthquake of that magnitude has had an epicenter near NYC since 1884, according to the U.S. Geological Survey
  • Hours later, a magnitude 4.0 aftershock hit the same area of New Jersey just before 6 p.m., according to the USGS. Further aftershocks will be unpredictable but are possible for the next week, experts say; if you find yourself in one, drop to the floor and cover your neck

A magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck New Jersey Friday, triggering frenzied phone calls from Manhattan to Albany to Long Island, Montclair and New Haven, as buildings rumbled in a region unaccustomed to the ground shaking — and that was before the area was hit with an aftershock almost as powerful.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the inital quake hit just over four miles north of Whitehouse Station, just below Tewksbury in Hunterdon County, about 40 miles west of New York City, at 10:23 a.m. It was a shallow earthquake, only 2.9 miles deep, which means an earthquake of that strength would be felt by a larger number of people. USGS put that number at 42 million.

"We're taking this extremely seriously," New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said, calling it the most powerful earthquake felt by the East Coast since at least 2011 and the strongest to hit the East Coast directly in the last century.

Perhaps most surprising: No injuries or any significant building damages were reported throughout the entire region.

For context, a magnitude 4.0 quake can be felt about 60 miles from the epicenter; a magnitude 5.5 quake can be felt from 300 miles from the center. This 4.8 one reverberated throughout the entire tri-state, and was felt as far away as Maryland and Maine, according to witness reports.

USGS reported "moderate" intensity near the epicenter, with light and weak shaking reported regionally.

Hours later, a magnitude 4.0 aftershock hit the same area of New Jersey just before 6 p.m., according to the USGS. The epicenter of the aftershock was said to be 7.4 miles northwest of Bridgewater, which is just over the county line in Somerset County. The aftershock was significantly deeper than the initial quake, about 5.6 miles deep, which explains why it wouldn't have been felt by as many people.

A much smaller aftershock, magnitude 2.0, was reported by the USGS in Bedminster, New Jersey, around 11:20 a.m. It was one of 12 aftershocks since the initial quake that have registered at least 1.8 or higher on the Richter scale, according to USGS geophysicist Timothy Clements. There may have been more, but any below 1.8 in magnitude would have been undetected.

Further aftershocks will be unpredictable but are possible for the next week, experts say. The USGS said there would be nearly a 50% probability of an aftershock magnitude 3.0 or more, a 16% of one magnitude 4.0 or more, and even a 3% chance of one that was more intense than the initial quake. If you find yourself in an aftershock, experts say you should drop to the floor and cover your neck.

4.8 earthquake map

Hochul said she directed her team to conduct damage assessments, including checking all state roads as well as major transmission lines and dams. The Democrat encouraged all municipalities to send crews for structural integrity assessments and vulnerable locations.

In New Jersey, there were few reports of damage, despite the epicenter being located there. There were three homes in along Seventh Avenue in Newark that saw structural damage after their roofs appeared to have collided during the shaking. Ten families, including 25 adults and three children, were relocated as a result.

Pictures and decorative plates tumbled off the wall in Christiann Thompson's house near Whitehouse Station, she said, relaying what her husband had told her by phone as she volunteered at a library.

“The dogs lost their minds and got very terrified and ran around," she said.

Whitehouse Station Fire Chief Tim Apgar said no injuries were reported, but responders fielded some calls from people who smelled gas. Nearby, the upper portion of the 264-year-old Col. John Taylor’s Grist Mill historic site collapsed onto a roadway, according to Readington Township Mayor Adam Mueller.

In New York City, people described feeling the quake as a slight vibration. Some thought it was just a subway rolling underground beneath them or construction nearby; others didn't feel it at all. A meeting at the United Nations was briefly disrupted. Hour-long ground stops were ordered at JFK and Newark airports to allow crews time to ensure the quake didn't cause any runway cracks, but no damage was found and those stops were lifted.

Traffic through the Holland Tunnel between Jersey City and lower Manhattan was stopped for about 10 minutes for inspections, the Port Authority of New York and Jersey said.

In midtown Manhattan, motorists blared their horns on shuddering streets. Some Brooklyn residents heard a boom and felt their building shaking. Cellphone circuits were overloaded for a time as people tried to reach loved ones. Later, phones blared with earthquake-related notifications during the New York Philharmonic’s morning performance, where Anton Webern’s Six Pieces for Orchestra “literally ended with a cellphone alert,” said spokesperson Adam Crane.

The Department of Education sent messages to guardians of New York City Public School students ensuring them that their kids' were safest inside their classrooms, and that dismissal proceeded as usual later in the day.

The NYPD says all relevant emergency agencies were briefed on the situation, though impacts were minimal. Mayor Eric Adams said there were no reported safety or infrastructure problems, nor any disruptions to the power, water or gas system.

The mayor also said the Department of Buildings found no problems after conducting inspections, though the DOB will continue to look at all buildings in the coming days for any delayed cracks or other effects on the city's 1.1 million buildings. The department had not received any calls about structural concerns.

Engineers said New York’s skyscrapers are made of high-strength materials and designed to sway slowly to withstand winds and other impacts. Modern high rises also have other features to help absorb any shock.

“High-rise buildings can be one of the safest places you can be in an earthquake,” said Ahmad Rahimian of the engineering firm WSP Global.

Our @NYCSchools haven't reported any issues, and our students and staff are safe. Dismissal and afterschool will continue as scheduled for today. — Mayor Eric Adams (@NYCMayor) April 5, 2024

The MTA said service was not impacted, though teams were dispatched to inspect train lines and tunnels. New Jersey Transit reported up to 20-minute delays due to crew bridge inspections in the aftermath, but service was not impacted further.

There were no reported issues along the infrastructure for MTA, after both the initial quake and the powerful aftershock hours later, saying that the system continued to run "safely and normally."

A 4.8 magnitude earthquake hit west of Manhattan and has been felt throughout New York. My team is assessing impacts and any damage that may have occurred, and we will update the public throughout the day. — Governor Kathy Hochul (@GovKathyHochul) April 5, 2024

History of earthquakes in Tri-State

Earthquakes with magnitudes near or above 5 struck near New York City in 1737, 1783 and 1884, the USGS said. Take a look at a list of the most powerful earthquakes near NYC in history.

The most powerful quakes near the city were on Aug. 10, 1884, and Dec. 19, 1737, according to the Lamont-Doherty Cooperative Seismographic Network. Both of those quakes were magnitude 5.2 in the greater NYC area, but the exact spot where they occurred is not known.

Friday's quake stirred memories of the Aug. 23, 2011, earthquake that jolted tens of millions of people from Georgia to Canada. With an epicenter in Virginia, it left cracks in the Washington Monument and rattled New Yorkers ahead of the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

It's not the first quake to rumble the tri-state area this year. In January, a magnitude 1.7 earthquake struck near Astoria, Queens, according to USGS.

Earthquakes in the New York City area are rare, even if they seem increasingly common in recent years.

There are fault lines in the city but experts say residents have nothing to fear.

“I wouldn’t worry about it too much. The East Coast has been geologically stable for millions of years," Stephen Holler, an associate professor of physics and engineering at Fordham University, said.

He did not expect aftershocks to be a concern.

While a relatively strong earthquake for this part of the United States, it doesn't compare to the one that hit Taiwan earlier this week. T he country's strongest earthquake in more than 25 years, the magnitude 7.4 quake that hit Wednesday killed at least nine people died and hurt more than 1,000. Scores remain missing.

Earthquake felt across Northeast

In Astoria, Cassondra Kurtz was giving her 14-year-old Chihuahua, Chiki, a cocoa-butter rubdown for her dry skin. Kurtz was recording the moment on video, as an everyday memory of the dog’s older years, when her apartment started shaking hard enough that a 9-foot-tall mirror banged audibly against a wall.

Kurtz assumed at first it was a big truck going by. The video captured her looking around, perplexed. Chiki, however, “was completely unbothered.”

Attorney Finn Dusenbery was in a law office in midtown Manhattan. “The building shook and I thought that the ceiling above me was going to collapse,” Dusenbery said. “I did think that maybe the building was going to fall down for a second, and I wanted to get out of the building when I felt that.”

At a coffee shop in lower Manhattan, customers buzzed over the unexpected earthquake, which rattled dishware and shook the concrete counter. “I noticed the door trembling on its frame,” said India Hays, a barista. “I thought surely there couldn’t be an earthquake here.”

Solomon Byron was sitting on a park bench in Manhattan’s East Village when he felt an unfamiliar rumble. “I felt this vibration, and I was just like, where is that vibration coming from,” Byron said. “There’s no trains nowhere close by here or anything like that.” Byron said he didn’t realize there had been an earthquake until he got the alert on his cellphone.

People in Baltimore, Philadelphia, Connecticut and other areas of the Northeast reported shaking. Tremors lasting for several seconds were felt over 200 miles away near the Massachusetts-New Hampshire border.
