Barbie exhibition description.

Explore the world of everyone's favorite ten-inch tall fashionista with Barbie: A Cultural Icon - The Exposition at the Shops at Crystals. This unique experience offers a colorful and thorough history lesson about this pop culture phenomenon that spans decades.

Travel back to 1959 to find out how this itty-bitty blonde beauty took the world by storm. What makes this exhibition truly unique is the bird's eye view it offers of the world's changing culture through the lens of this singular children's toy.

Your tour starts with the original design that features demure, downcast eyes, housewife fashion, and the most intricately made miniaturized doll accessories we've ever seen. From that striped bathing suit style, Barbie has evolved through the decades to highlight the most important parts of each era. The 1970's Malibu Barbie changed the body design to bright, forward-facing eyes, a glowy suntan, and an open-mouthed smile that continued to be the basic face design for the next few decades. When the feminist and civil rights movements began to rise in the United States, Barbie was the first company to make a black doll to show support for desegregation in the 1960s.

Throughout Barbie's lifetime, she's been a doctor, a president, a pilot, and an astronaut, showing girls from multiple decades that there is no limit to what women can do.

Barbie has been on the cutting edge of culture and fashion throughout her time on department store shelves, and Mattel continues to update her design to be a positive role model for future generations.

So snap a few photos of your favorite doll or take a seat in the Barbie dream house because at Barbie: A Cultural Icon, we're all  Barbie girls in a Barbie world.

The History of Barbie

world of barbie tour las vegas

Barbie has been a cultural icon since her invention in 1959. Barbie has started fashion trends, impacted pop culture, and shown us all that she’s more than just a doll.

Vintage Barbie dolls began inspiring children with career representation for women that had never been seen on such a large scale before. Barbie continued to gain popularity as more skin tones and body types were manufactured. Barbie quickly became known as the most diverse doll line on the market.

This positive attention sky-rocketed Barbie to popularity as a global icon for kids and adults alike. Barbie became known as a role model and best friend. The creative design team for Barbie wasn’t afraid to take risks. The world got a real sense that Barbie means diversity in every sense of the word.

Sixty years later, Barbie: A Cultural Icon Exhibition is a popular tourist destination in Las Vegas. Barbie continues to be one of the most popular dolls in the world today. She’s impacting cultural touchstones of fashion, pop culture, and equal representation for all.

Las Vegas Strip To Host First Stop Of Barbie Cultural Icon Tour

  • News and Tips
  • Travel News

Las Vegas has always been home to the biggest names in the entertainment business. And now one of the biggest names over the past 60 years is coming to the Strip.

Barbie: A Cultural Icon will debut October 22 and run for close to 3 months inside The Shops at Crystals. The exhibition will display the very first Barbie doll produced in 1959, then lead visitors through her changes through the decades, paying homage to Barbie and the world around her.

The exhibition will also feature more than 150 vintage dolls, artifacts, and life-sized fashion pieces that will come to life, and videos and interviews with Barbie designers will expand the story.

“We are excited to partner with Illusion Projects to bring Barbie: A Cultural Icon to Las Vegas,” Julie Freeland, senior director of location-based entertainment for Mattel, said in a statement . “Barbie is a brand that has evolved through generations, and we can’t wait for fans of all ages to take a journey through time with us.”

The display is expected to tour after its Las Vegas run, but organizers felt Nevada was the perfect place for the launch.

“So much of the entertainment and fashion culture of Las Vegas is mirrored in the generations of Barbie,” said Pete Housley, exhibition executive director. “The Barbie exhibition is perfectly positioned in the middle of The Shops at Crystals alongside many of the world-famous fashion brands that Barbie has worn through the decades.”

This is something new for The Shops at Crystals, a location even many residents of Las Vegas are not familiar with. Much like the more famous Forum Shops at Caesars and the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood, The Shops at Crystals features dozens of high-profile stores.

Located in City Center between Aria and New York New York, the shops feature 49 luxury retailers like Christian Dior, Gucci, Stella McCartney, Tag Heuer, and more.

“Barbie has an amazing and inspiring history. There is a real sense of nostalgia when you see what was happening in the world, and in Barbie’s world, when you were a kid — and then follow the story to how she’s impacting our world today,” said Tim Clothier, CEO of Illusion Projects Inc.

Pre-sale, discounted tickets for the exhibition are $49.95 for adults and teenagers, $39.95 for seniors 55 and older and members of the military, and $29.95 for children ages 3–12.

Aqua announcing Barbie World Tour, stopping in Las Vegas in December

world of barbie tour las vegas

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Life in plastic, it's fantastic, at least according to Aqua.

The band behind the hit song "Barbie Girl" has announced their Barbie World Tour. The song has gotten a boost recently thanks to the hit Mattel movie starring Margot Robbie. Rappers Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice sampled the song for a new track for the film's soundtrack.

"We've been working for this for 27 years! Performing two sold-out shows in New York City and Los Angeles this summer was a dream come true," the band said in a statement. "To be able to come back soon for a nation-wide tour is absolutely insane. We cannot wait to meet everyone for the first time, face-to-face."

Keyboardist Soren Rasted said fans may only know "Barbie Girl" but they also have other catchy songs.

"We didn't have any other hits in America. We put "Lollipop (Candyman)" out as the second single and it never worked," Rasted said. "It was a bit disappointing because in America, suddenly we became a one-hit-wonder band."

Aqua's Barbie Girl tour kicks off in Seattle in November. They're scheduled to perform in Las Vegas at the House Of Blues, which is at Mandalay Bay, on Dec. 19.

Ticket start at $65. Pre-sales start on Monday, Aug. 28 with the code word TRACK.

‘Barbie: A Cultural Icon’ exhibition coming to Las Vegas in October

In partnership with creative design and production company Illusion Projects, Mattel has announced that “Barbie: A Cultural Icon” — the first Barbie doll exhibition to tour in the United States — will launch at The Shops at Crystals in Las Vegas in October with additional tour dates to come.

Barbie: A Cultural Icon Exhibition

The new exhibition will showcase Barbie’s six-decade evolution into a global icon — her status confirmed by the fact that few people don’t know who Barbie is, whether or not they played with the iconic dolls themselves. For me, it’s twofold: I was certainly a Barbie fan as a kid, but my mom also went to high school with Barbara Handler, the daughter of then Mattel owner (and Barbie’s namesake).

“Barbie has an amazing and inspiring history. There is a real sense of nostalgia when you see what was happening in the world, and in Barbie’s world when you were a kid — and then follow the story to how she’s impacting our world today,”  said Tim Clothier, CEO of Illusion Projects Inc.

Barbie: A Cultural Icon - Barbie honors frontline workers

Barbie has always been at the intersection of fashion and pop culture and continues to represent global diversity by showcasing a multi-dimensional view of beauty and fashion. Named the 2020 Top Global Toy Property of the Year by the NPD Group, the brand engages consumers through new product innovation, cultural relevance, digital dialog, and the celebration of female role models. Barbie also received the Board of Director’s Tribute at the 2019 CFDA Fashion Awards and has served as a creative inspiration to more than 150 designers.

Barbie: A Cultural Icon - Barbie history

To honor Barbie’s 62 years (though she certainly doesn’t look her age), the exhibition will display the very first Barbie doll produced in 1959 and lead guests through the decades, paying homage to both Barbie and the changing world around her. The exhibition will also feature custom-themed displays featuring 150+ vintage dolls, artifacts, and life-sized fashion pieces, as well as video media and interviews with Barbie designers.

“We are excited to partner with Illusion Projects to bring Barbie: A Cultural Icon to Las Vegas,” said Julie Freeland, senior director of location-based entertainment at Mattel. “Barbie is a brand that has evolved through generations, and we can’t wait for fans of all ages to take a journey through time with us!”

world of barbie tour las vegas

There’s no better place for an exhibition honoring a global fashion iconic than The Shops at Crystals, a collection of 50 of the finest luxury brands in the world, including Louis Vuitton, Gucci , Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, Hermes, Fendi, and Chanel.

“So much of the entertainment and fashion culture of Las Vegas is mirrored in the generations of Barbie,” said Exhibition Executive Director Pete Housley. “The Barbie Exhibition is perfectly positioned in the middle of The Shops at Crystals alongside many of the world-famous fashion brands that Barbie has worn through the decades.”

Pre-sale tickets are $49.95 for adults and $29.99 for children ages 3-12. Pre-Sale vouchers can be redeemed for tickets starting Oct. 10, 2021, and are valid through Jan. 15, 2021.

Michael Sinatra was the performer along with his lady counterpart Valita Leigh-Garcia, who we liked even better. Michael did not attempt to impersonate Frank, but did his own interpretation. the two had a tough job as the audience was very small that night which was likely disappointing, but they still provided energy and excitement and made it a special evening for us. Mattel’s Barbie Exhibition Set for Vegas

Mattel and Illusion Projects are set to open Barbie: A Cultural Icon, the brand’s first exhibition to tour the U.S., in Las Vegas next month.

Barbie: A Cultural Icon will showcase the six-decade evolution of the Barbie brand. The exhibition will display the first-ever Barbie doll produced in 1959 and will then lead guests through the decades with more than 150 vintage dolls, artifacts and life-sized fashion pieces on display.

Video media and interviews with Barbie designers will expand the narrative to give guests a full picture of how the brand has evolved over the years and its impact on fashion and pop culture.

More info on Banijay Kids & Family here .

The exhibition will open inside The Shops at Crystals in Las Vegas. More tour dates will be set.

“So much of the entertainment and fashion culture of Las Vegas is mirrored in the generations of Barbie,” said Pete Housley, the exhibition’s executive director. “The Barbie Exhibition is perfectly positioned in the middle of The Shops at Crystals alongside many of the world-famous fashion brands that Barbie has worn through the decades.”

Sneak Peek: See Inside the 'Immersive' Barbie Experience Touring North America Starting This Summer

“World of Barbie” debuts in Toronto this July and will stop in New York, Chicago, Dallas and other cities

world of barbie tour las vegas

Visiting Barbie's Dreamhouse is now a reality!

Barbie fans of all ages will be able to walk into a human-size version of her imaginative world at "World of Barbie," an immersive experience that celebrates everything the iconic doll's universe has to offer. Entertainment company Kilburn Live partnered with Mattel to bring Barbie's neighborhood to cities across North America as part of a tour that kicks off this summer in Toronto. The attraction will stop in New York, Chicago and Dallas with more to come.

"World of Barbie," created by entertainment company Kilburn Live and Mattel , kicks off this summer in Toronto before touring around North America, and will allow fans to walk down Barbie's neighborhood streets. Visitors can explore several immersive play sets, including a life-size version of Barbie's bubblegum pink camper van. The vehicle even includes a hammock to lounge on, bringing a signature feature of the toy campers to life.

Other event highlights include strutting down the pink carpet, which features a row of six giant doll boxes with themes like "Western" and "Fashionista" that guests can climb into to snap a photo.

The real show-stopper is Barbie's iconic dreamhouse. According to Mark Manuel, CEO of Kilburn Live, the life-size house will transport guests to Malibu.

Not only can visitors sit in Barbie's modern living room and kitchen, but they can also play outside on a patio complete with a fake pool. And, of course, fans can walk into Barbie's closet, full of her different career-themed clothing and outfits inclusive of her style over the years.

What makes "World of Barbie" stand out is that the experience is meant to be enjoyed across generations, says Manuel: "Stepping into Barbie's real life dreamhouse, being transported to Malibu, sitting down in her camper van…there's no age limit to that."

There's also an element of nostalgia in Barbie's real-life neighborhood for grown-up fans. "You also have an older generation who's going to walk through and be brought back to their childhood days," he adds.

"World of Barbie" even includes a museum that chronicles Barbie's development over the decades. Julie Freeland, Senior Director of Location-Based Entertainment at Mattel, says that part of the attraction really plays into the universal connection fans have with Barbie.

"I travel all over the world, and people have their own stories of the favorite dreamhouse they had when they were a kid or their favorite doll that they grew up with. And they pass that on to their kids," she tells PEOPLE.

Barbie's neighborhood also includes multiple play sets that are career driven — from a TV studio to a space center and fashion studio. There's even a hands-on science lab where visitors can perform experiments. The purpose of the play sets isn't just purely fun. They're meant to help young kids explore and cultivate their interests.

"Barbie has had so many firsts, and has had so many different careers," Freeland said. "We hope that they leave truly feeling inspired and feeling like [they] can do anything."

"World of Barbie" kicks off in Toronto this summer before touring U.S. cities. Visit theworldofbarbie.com for more information.

‘Barbie Girl’ by Aqua has seen a resurgence in recent months due to the buzz around the Barbie movie.

While the track did not feature directly on the star-studded soundtrack , a reimagined version was recorded by Nicki Minaj  and  Ice Spice , which sees the pair sample original snippets of the Aqua classic.

It was previously reported last year that Aqua’s version of ‘Barbie Girl’  would not feature in the film , but star Margot Robbie was apparently insistent on it featuring.

“I was like, ‘Greta, how are we going to incorporate this song? We can’t do a Barbie movie and not have a nod to Aqua’s ‘Barbie Girl.’ It has to be in there.’ And [Greta] was like, ‘Don’t worry, we’re going to find a cool way to incorporate it,’ ” recalled Robbie in a feature with Rolling Stone .

She continued: “And then, when she was like, ‘Guess who’s going to do the remix of Aqua’s “Barbie Girl”? Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice.’ I was like, ‘Together? Are you joking?!’ I just knew immediately that all my girlfriends were going to lose their minds.”

Barbie is opening the doors to her Dreamhouse.

Ahead of Greta Gerwig ‘s highly anticipated and star-studded “Barbie” film, out this July, the entertainment company Kilburn Live and Mattel have teamed up in creating an immersive experience called “World of Barbie” that initially kicked off in Toronto and will now tour across North America through the summer. The experience opens in Los Angeles’s Santa Monica Place on Apr. 14. Tickets are available on the Fever website for $34.50.

Read More: Everything We Know About Margot Robbie’s ‘Barbie’ Movie

Of course, the highlight of the experience is Barbie’s Dreamhouse, where guests will be able to explore the exquisitely designed rooms of the life-size Malibu mansion complete with a patio and pool, and walk-in closets filled with garments from decades of iconic Barbie fashion history.

The Los Angeles run will also feature special events and after-hour celebrations. Starting in late May, 21+ guests will be invited to Sips after Sunset, a recurring event with DJ-driven music and specialty cocktails, while June will see the opening of Pink Carpet Night, where guests will be encouraged to wear their most glamorous, “Barbiecore” attire for a night of live music, dancing and drinks.

Warner Bros. released the official trailer for Gerwig’s “Barbie” film last month. While plot details have been kept tightly under wraps, the film does find Barbie and Ken stuck in the real world, where the former discovers the challenges of being a live woman. Robbie stars opposite Ryan Gosling, who plays Barbie’s longtime boy toy Ken.

Along with Robbie and Gosling, the star-studded cast includes Will Ferrell, Emma Mackey, Connor Swindells, Nicola Coughlan, Emerald Fennell, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Simu Liu, America Ferrera, Ncuti Gatwa and Issa Rae, among many others.

While there, you can lounge in Barbie's perfectly decorated living room and walk the pink carpet; you can also try on some of Barbie's fashionable personalities by stepping into life-size doll boxes with themes like "Western" and "fashionista." Outside, you can lounge on Barbie's patio and splash in the pool.

It is plastic, so no diving is allowed.

Not only will you be able to walk through Barbie's home, but you'll also have a chance to tour her very pink camper van and explore areas themed to a few of Barbie's many careers — including newscaster, lab scientist and astronaut. You can enjoy snacks from a Barbie-themed cafe and visit a museum that chronicles Barbie's history and evolution.

Special events will occur throughout World of Barbie's Los Angeles run. For instance, on Pink Carpet Night, guests are encouraged to don their best pink outfits. They can also enjoy Movie Days with Barbie animated films as well as Sips After Sunset nights with live music and themed cocktails.

The photo opportunities are endless, but World of Barbie's creators hope visitors come away with more than selfies.

Their goal is for kids to be inspired to dream big like Barbie — the only doll in history who has held down simultaneous careers as a pilot and a rock star and managed to look flawless doing both. Adults who grew up with Barbie can reminisce about the doll they've loved since childhood and admire how she has evolved throughout the years.

‘Barbie’ Frenzy Continues With Aqua’s 2023 ‘Barbie World Tour’

Barbie fans…”Wanna go for a ride?”

The masterminds behind the 1997 smash-hit “Barbie Girl” are heading out on the aptly-titled ‘Barbie World Tour’ this fall amid the ongoing ‘Barbie’ sensation.

Mattel’s 2023 ‘Barbie’ movie has officially surpassed $1 billion in box office sales internationally, breaking various records. You’ve probably seen promotional materials for the film everywhere — with a whopping $150 million spent on the movie’s marketing campaign, and now, the frenzy will continue.

Buy Sell and Go with confidence at StubHub

“AMERICA…You wanna go for a ride?” Aqua, the Danish-Norweigan Europop group, asked on a social media post this week.

The U.S. trek will kick-off in Seattle on November 12, followed by gigs at venues like New Orleans’ Fillmore, the House of Blues in Chicago, and The Depot in Salt Lake City. They’ll wrap-up at Los Angeles’s Hollywood Palladium on December 20.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by AQUA (@aqua.dk)

The chart-topping track “Barbie Girl” certainly helped put Aqua on the map in the late ’90s with their debut Aquarium — and it was even sampled in the ‘Barbie’ film under the new name “Barbie World,” recorded by Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice. However, the dace-pop group still has more to offer, delivering Aquarius in 2000 and Megalomania in 2011 after over a decade-long break.

Since 2016, the band has been back in action and released the single “Rookie” in 2018 and “I Am What I Am” in 2021.

A new book charts all the colourful looks worn by Margot Robbie on the Barbie press tour

In one of the most literal and dedicated forms of ' Method Dressing ' we've ever seen, Robbie's red-carpet looks throughout Barbie 's promotion – from pink Valentino polka-dots to playful gingham Prada ensembles – were inspired by outfits worn by the doll herself, expertly re-created by top designers with the help of Robbie's stylist, Andrew Mukamal. Now, a new book, Barbie: The World Tour , pays homage to this epic feat of life imitating art, with photographs by Craig McDean charting all of Robbie's Barbie-coded outfits.

Accompanying McDean's sumptuous photography are images of original Barbie dolls from the period, a treasure trove of rare materials from Mattel's Barbie fashion archives, and the designers' sketches and Polaroids from fittings. With text by Margot Robbie and Andrew Mukamal, as well as handwritten contributions from the designers behind the looks, the book is a unique look behind the curtain at one of the most iconic tourdrobes in recent memory.

"The work that Andrew did in bringing all these elements together – the history of Barbie, the research he did through the Mattel archives, bringing in designers who had a childhood connection with Barbie or found inspiration in her for their later careers, or even just sensing what the world in general was getting excited about and trying to create moments for them – it was amazing, and it felt like that should all be celebrated," writes Robbie.

Here, we delve into our favourite photographs from the book. 'Barbie: The World Tour' by Margot Robbie and Andrew Mukamal (Rizzoli New York, 2024) is out now.

"It wasn’t just looking into the history of Barbie and the history of Mattel but also going into the knowledge that I had already accumulated just through work and interest in these different fashion houses and understanding their signatures, their codes, the things they’re most famous for," writes Mukamal in the book, of finding the designers – and the outfits – for Robbie.

Margot Robbie as 'Day to Night' Barbie in Versace

Robbie wore this look, designed by Donatella Versace, to the Barbie premiere in Seoul. Featuring a pink and white skirt suit with a matching boater hat, pointed pumps, a mini bag and a glittery pink phone, it's one of the most famous from the whole tour.

Sketches by Donatella Versace

"My first memory of Barbie was seeing her iconic blonde hair and understanding she was a powerful woman who could be anything. A total inspiration!" wrote Donatella Versace on one of her inspiration sketches for Robbie's 'Day to Night' Barbie outfit. Also pictured is a sketch of the second look Robbie wore to the Seoul premiere, which featured a shimmering bodice and tulle skirt – also based on one of the doll's original designs.

A sketch by Andreas Kronthaler

text, letter

"Without Barbie, I would not be a fashion designer," reads a note by designer Andreas Kronthaler, affixed to a sketch for the Vivienne Westwood dress Robbie wore to the European Barbie premiere, held in London. On the night, Robbie wore a couture gown modelled on the 'Enchanted Evening' doll from 1990, which was made from blush satin and embroidered white tulle, which she accessorised with ivory opera gloves, a pearl choker and a rose brooch.

Margot Robbie in Chanel

The Barbie tour was actually cut short due to the SAG-AFTRA strike , meaning not every look made it onto the red carpet. All were photographed, however – meaning this is one of the first looks at Robbie in a Barbie-inspired Chanel jacket and skirt.

Margot Robbie as 'Cherry Pie Picnic' Barbie in Bottega Veneta

a person sitting in a chair

Mukamal's inspiration for this look was the 'Cherry Pie Picnic' Barbie from 2015, and featured turn-up jeans by Bottega Veneta, a red belt and a tie-up floral shirt, along with Manolo Blahnik mules. "For an early morning talk show, we loved the idea of wearing Matthieu Blazy’s version of 'Cherry Pie Picnic' for Bottega Veneta: something surprising, our only denim look of the tour and a step away from pink," writes Mukamal in the book.

Margot Robbie’s Complete Barbie World Tour Wardrobe Gets the Art Book Treatment

Stylist Andrew Mukamal shares never-before-seen looks from the film’s press tour.

Margot Robbie in Chanel in the Barbie: The World Tour book

After the actors' strike shut down the Barbie press tour just before the movie hit theaters—with record-breaking sales at the box office—last July, the film’s star, Margot Robbie , her stylist Andrew Mukamal, and other members of Robbie’s team were having tea at Claridge's in London. "It was a celebration, but also bittersweet, because it was the end of a special and exciting moment for all of us," Mukamal remembers.

They weren't sure when they would all be together next. At that point, putting together a book-length project of Robbie's Barbie-inspired looks was a dream put on pause. Luckily, it eventually materialized into a reality.

Barbie: The World Tour , from Rizzoli, is out in the world on March 19 with 160 glorious pages of incredible images by photographer Craig McDean. The coffee-table book also includes luscious collages combining sketches and notes from the designers, images of vintage Barbie inspiration and snapshots of Robbie stunning on the red carpet.

Many of the looks featured will be familiar to anyone who gobbled up Getty Images of Robbie as she promoted her work on the Greta Gerwig-directed film. Think, for instance, of the c ustom Hervé Léger bandage dress that put a spin on Barbie's iconic black and white striped bathing suit, or Versace's interpretation of the doll's famous "Day to Night" 1985 ensemble, featuring a clunky early cell phone and all.

Robbie in Versace

Other looks will be completely new to the reader, including the outfits that Robbie and Mukamal didn't take out on the road when tour stops were canceled for strike-related reasons. For instance, a stunning overcoat with a matching brocaded dress by Miu Miu replicating Barbie's "Evening Splendor" that Robbie was supposed to debut in Tokyo.

For Mukamal, Barbie: The World Tour, is the book he’d always dreamed of making.

Barbie: The World Tour

"As a teenager, I was obsessed with fashion images, magazines, books,” he said, reflecting on the joy of leafing through “something where you could see the references, the process, fabric swatches, handwriting, final product.” He adds, “If I were younger, this would probably blow my mind."

The beginnings of the project came about before Robbie ever stepped foot on a red carpet, as she and Mukamal were preparing for her eventual press tour. Mukamal gathered his ephemera and inspirations in a folder, including sketches and swatches; that folder became his "happy place."

world of barbie tour las vegas

Once creative director Fabien Baron, who was also responsible for the collages, came on, he wanted to carry the idea over to the page. "It should feel like a journal, like a narrative," Baron says. "There's so much storytelling in Barbie."

The photoshoot for the book happened in just three days—post-strike, of course. McDean, Mukamal, Robbie, Baron, and set designer Stefan Beckman created environments specific to the clothing. "I approached each look as its own unique thing," McDean says. "Some looks we did more simply, and others had more layers with things like sets and props. Margot is incredible to work with because she gives you such a range of characters to capture."

world of barbie tour las vegas

Robbie wearing Vivienne Westwood

world of barbie tour las vegas

Robbie threw herself into the book with the gusto you might expect. Wearing Schiaparelli's "Solo in the Spotlight" black sequined gown, she gives Barbie-as-chanteuse. In Givenchy's polka-dotted "Gay Parisienne," she looks particularly doll-like, eyes wide. "When she is in work mode and she sprays her Barbie perfume on her and she's just gliding in and out of outfits, she's the first one running to set," Mukamal says. "We're all chasing after her." (Yes, Robbie has a specific perfume she wears to inhabit the spirit of Barbie. Mukamal could not confirm the brand.)

The book was produced quickly to meet the Barbie moment. "To me, it's a document," Baron says. "It's what it meant at that time, and what it did to America as a film. The timing was super crucial."

Some of that significance is summed up in the forward by former British Vogue editor-in-chief Edward Enniful, which explains how "it's very rare that a film traverses the globe in the way the Barbie movie has." You can also spot it in the personalized notes written on the sketches. Donatella Versace, for instance, scribbles: "My first memory of Barbie was seeing her iconic blonde hair and understanding she was a powerful woman who could be anything. A total inspiration!"

Robbie in Chanel

world of barbie tour las vegas

These intimate contributions from designers are some of the treasures of the book. For instance, Mukamal put Robbie in a 1992 minidress by Bob Mackie for an after-party. Because he bought the dress on The Real Real for $500—a steal for that kind of find—he reached out to Mackie for an original sketch. Mackie, who has a long history with Barbie, wanted to sketch the dress anew, with Robbie in it. "Everybody else was putting Margot's head on the idea of the outfit before it was produced, before she wore it," Mukamal says. "And this was going backward with this one look, which felt so incredible."

The book perhaps is the final evolution of Robbie's journey as Barbie. After all, if you measure a real Barbie against the image of her on the cover, laid out as if in a box, you'll find they are the exact same size.

Margot Robbie with an inset of the "Barbie: The World Tour" book

Come on Barbie, let’s go walk the red carpet.

Margot Robbie and her stylist Andrew Mukamal culminated a fashion-filled chapter in her career with “Barbie: The World Tour” ( $50 $39) — a book chronicling her many unforgettable “Barbie” press tour outfits .

And with Amazon’s Big Spring Sale is in full swing, the hot-off-the-presses pink coffee table book is already on sale for nearly 30% off.

“Barbie: The World Tour”

"Barbie: The World Tour" book

The 160-page project combines sketches, archival Barbie photos and notes from the designers with (what else?) images of Robbie all dolled up in Mukmal’s Mattel-inspired style selections, shot by famed fashion photographer Craig McDean

And while “Barbie” fanatics will recognize many of the looks — who could forget when she cosplayed 1985’s Day-to-Night Barbie , complete with a fake phone? — there’s also some never-before-seen gems from carpets cancelled amid the SAG Aftra Strike.

“This book was an idea I had in my living room when I started dreaming about Margot’s wardrobe for the “Barbie” press tour in March 2023,” Mukmal wrote in an Instagram post announcing the release.

“I could have never imagined just a few months later we’d be in the studio shooting this project with the team of our dreams,” he added, before thanking Robbie for “bringing me on this wild ride and being the most incredible and trusting partner.”

Amazon's Big Spring Sale is HERE!

In addition to books, plenty of beauty buys are also dramatically discounted during Amazon’s Spring Sale — including some of Robbie’s standbys.

She’s shouted out Lancer Cleanser ( $90 $86) and Klorane Dry Shampoo ( $42 $19) in interviews over the years, once telling British Vogue she “can’t be without” the latter.

If you’re looking to watch the “Barbie” movie for the first time (or again, let’s be honest), it’s available on many streaming platforms.

How ‘Barbie’s’ awards season hopes (mostly) fizzled at the Oscars

Eight months ago, on an otherwise quiet July weekend, two films — Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” — shared a release date and together, as Barbenheimer, became the cinematic event and cultural phenomenon of the summer. They seemingly set the stage for a pink-filled, explosive awards season.

But the recognition for the unlikely twins was hardly identical. While “Oppenheimer” pulled in 13 Oscar nominations, “Barbie” earned just eight.

While saluting the stunt community at Sunday’s ceremony, “Barbie’s” Ryan Gosling and “Oppenheimer’s” Emily Blunt — each nominated for their supporting roles in their respective films — playfully acknowledged the faceoff.

“I’m just happy we can finally put this Barbenheimer rivalry behind us,” Gosling told Blunt as they took the stage.

Ryan Gosling, Slash and 65 Kens lead Oscars audience in ‘I’m Just Ken’ singalong

The Oscar-nominated actor led an ensemble of 65 dancers in the live rendition of the ‘Barbie’ musical number, with Mark Ronson and Simu Liu in tow.

March 10, 2024

Continuing the bit, Blunt kept it blunt : “That’s right — it’s Ken and Kitty, just leaving all that fodder in the dust. And the way this award season’s turned out, it wasn’t much of a rivalry. So, just let it go.”

“It’s true, you guys are doing very well, congratulations,” Gosling said, channeling his character’s finesse with a burn. “But, you know, I think I figured out why they called it Barbenheimer, and they didn’t call it Oppenbarbie. ... I think you guys are at the tail end of that, because you were riding ‘Barbie’s’ coattails all summer.”

Behind every joke, there is some truth. In the end, Barbie won one of its eight nominations — original song . “Oppenheimer” won seven of its 13, including best picture, lead actor for Cillian Murphy and director for Chrisopher Nolan — his first win.

“What Was I Made For?,” music and lyric by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell, took home the sole trophy for “Barbie.”

“I’m so grateful for this song, and this movie and the way it made me feel. This goes out to everyone who was affected by this movie and how incredible it is,” Eilish said from the stage.

‘Barbie’ singer Billie Eilish becomes youngest person to win two Oscars

The 22-year-old singer-songwriter made history by winning the original song Oscar for her ‘Barbie’ ballad ‘What Was I Made For?’

But it wasn’t the haul many might have expected for a critically acclaimed, history-making blockbuster.

“I hadn’t expected [‘Barbie’] to plummet as a contender so clearly and so quickly early on,” said Stephen Galloway, dean of Chapman University’s film school. “Usually, it takes longer. There’s room for surprises.”

The film, starring Margot Robbie as the iconic blond plastic doll, saved the summer box office, becoming the highest-grossing film of the year with $636 million in North America and $1.4 billion globally to date. The impressive receipts also came with frenzied buzz, boosted by a dizzying amount of marketing tie-ins and Robbie’s impressive press-tour fashions inspired by actual looks worn by the famous doll over the years.

After months of living in a Barbie world, the academy rewarded the film with a more-than-respectable eight Oscar nominations, including for best picture. Two of its actors were nominated in supporting categories: Gosling, as Ken, and America Ferrera as Gloria , a frustrated working mom whose very human complications set off a crisis in Barbieland. Songs “I’m Just Ken” and “What Was I Made For?” made the original song category. It also was nominated for its costume and production design, and for its screenplay, by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach.

The 2024 Oscar winners list

Oscar winners “Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things,” Emma Stone and more took home Academy Awards during Sunday’s ceremony.

But the conversation on nominations morning in January was dominated instead by what “Barbie” wasn’t nominated for. Gerwig was left off the directing list, and Robbie, the titular star, who also executive produced the film, wasn’t nominated for lead actress. Numerous observers pointed out that these snubs reflected the same problems the film identified in the broader culture.

“The popular vote is never a guarantee of the establishment vote,” Galloway said. “In fact, the establishment has always been wary for them. If you look back at films that have emerged as classics, the most important of all time — Spielberg’s early films: ‘Jaws,’ ‘Close Encounters,’ ‘E.T,’ has he ever made better films? Not from my point of view, but they were not the ones that got awards. ‘Star Wars,’ which has probably influenced more of my students than any other film in history, no one even considered a serious contender for best picture. There’s always been a bit of a clash. And let’s face it, the establishment never recognized the avant-garde.”

Of course, “Oppenheimer,” a rare mix of box office clout and prestige, made for formidable competition. The film grossed nearly $1 billion worldwide and had all the makings of an Oscar darling: It was helmed by a long-admired director, tackled cerebral material in a serious manner and boasted a star-studded cast that included Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr. and Blunt.

All the best and worst moments of the 2024 Oscars, as they happened

“Oppenheimer” won several top awards, including best picture, director and lead actor, while lead actress went to Emma Stone for “Poor Things.” Billie Eilish won best song after Ryan Gosling performed “I’m Just Ken.”

It also came into the night on Sunday with plenty of hardware, including wins from the predictive trifecta of the Screen Actors Guild, the Directors Guild of America and the Producers Guild of America, as well as the Golden Globes and BAFTAs. “Barbie,” by contrast, was largely shut out at those major awards.

“Barbie’s” performance at the Oscars — or underperformance, as some might argue — highlights the motion picture academy’s ongoing struggle to balance the voting preferences of its members with the tastes of the filmgoing (and awards-show-watching) public.

Just as film studios have largely shifted toward tentpole and franchise fare in their output, the Oscar nominations have increasingly highlighted indie and international films. The pandemic underscored this evolution, with little-seen best picture winners “CODA” and “Nomadland” primarily distributed via streaming services. In turn, many have theorized that a lack of nominees and winners like box office behemoth “Titanic,” which took home best picture and 10 other Academy Awards during the highest-rated telecast ever in 1998, have contributed to the Oscars’ declining viewership.

Three women on the red carpet.

All the looks from the 2024 Oscars red carpet

Here are all the looks from the 2024 Oscars red carpet, from Emma Stone to Emily Blunt, Lupita Nyong’o to Zendaya.

In 2018, the organization even considered establishing a “popular film” category to bring blockbuster-type movies into the broadcast but quickly shelved the idea. The Golden Globes introduced such a category this year.

Its first winner? “Barbie.”

This marks Usher’s second marriage. The “Yeah” singer was previously wed to fashion designer Tameka Foster, with whom he shares sons Usher “Cinco” Raymond V, 16, and Navid Ely, 15.
