2024 Houston Open Power Rankings: Top 10 Golfers To Watch At Memorial Park

T his tournament got an added shot of adrenaline when the best player on planet Earth, Scottie Scheffler, committed early to this event. He's now going for the hat trick (3 wins in a row), and despite a few other players near the top that are playing well, he'll once again be the prohibitive favorite and may be less than +500 on the oddsboard.

I hope that these rankings have become a staple in your weekly preparation and the place where you start your research for the week. I have carefully evaluated the field to project course fits and expected results, in an attempt to give you a glimpse at how my brain operates when it comes to handicapping golf. In addition to my Top 10 rankings, I will provide a brief summary for each player to give some reasoning behind their rankings. As always, thank you for your support, and good luck.

Let's get is started!

#10. Jake Knapp

The California-blonde locks are making there way to Texas and the fans at Memorial Park will be excited to catch a glimpse of the smooth-swinging Jake Knapp. Anytime a player can win at the Mexico Open, but also perform awesome at PGA National and Torrey Pines, it makes it difficult to pigeon-hole a course fit.

Maybe he is just that good? His confidence is certainly at an all-time high after winning a few weeks ago and then receiving high praise from Rory McIlroy. Knapp possesses effortless power, a skill which is shared by many of the former champions at Memorial Park. It will be fun to see if he can continue his great run.

#9. Si Woo Kim

Si Woo Kim has grinded his way into becoming one of the most accurate players off the tee in all of professional golf. He's been hitting 70% of fairways over his last 24 rounds which is a good 10% better than Tour Average, but is still maintaining a respectable 169 mph ball speed on average.

Kim finished in a tie for 6th place at THE PLAYERS and once again flashed signs of brilliance around Pete Dye's famed track in Northeast Florida. In all typically hinges on the Putter and a dash of much-needed patience for Si Woo Kim. If he can continue to pound fairways, this should be just the type of event where he looks to capitalize.

#8. Tom Hoge

There is one player who has been statistically the best iron player in the world for the past six months and his name is NOT Scottie Scheffler I'm of course talking about Thomas Hoge! He has now gained strokes on Approach in fourteen consecutive starts on the PGA Tour which is quite remarkable.

His exacting iron play should go well in Texas where the wind can often whip through these flat, exposed golf courses like Memorial Park. He still has his flaws, and despite all those insanely good weeks with his Approach-play, Hoge has failed to finish inside the top-6 in any tournament. I think this could finally be the week he finds himself near the top of the leaderboard on Sunday and he's looking to parlay his iron plays into a big paycheck in Texas.

#7. Jason Day

I spent a good bit of time following Jason Day, and his abundance of fabric, around TPC Sawgrass and THE PLAYERS Championship. He finished the week with a disappointing 35th place result and he really couldn't get his irons going like he had during the California Swing.

There's something Jason Day loves about Texas though. He's played this event in three consecutive seasons with middling results, but his continued attendance tells me there is something about Memorial Park that suits his eye. Every week it seems like he excels in one part of his game, but then something else slips. If he can put it all together one week, we could see another victory this season.

#6. Keith Mitchell

It was a tough Sunday at the Valspar Championship for those like myself who were sweating a Kieth Mitchell ticket. The absolute high of holing out for Eagle to garner a solo Saturday night lead quickly wore off with a barrel of Sunday bogeys. That said, it shouldn't deter you too much after one bad round because Mitchell has been flushing it.

He ranks top-5 in the field in Greens in regulation and strokes gained approach over the last 24 rounds played. He's also been particularly good with his long irons, ranking 4th in the field in proximity gained on approach shots over 200+ yards. He's played well here before and he's in great form. Could it finally be his week?

#5. Sahith Theegala

There are numerous players in my rankings this week who have been searching for some confidence with the Putter, Sahith Theegale is not one of them. He's been rolling it beautifully on the greens and ranks 2nd in the field in terms of strokes gained Putting over the last 30 rounds played.

He's on the precipice of becoming a bonafide star on the PGA Tour, and they could use more great players who bring a little flare and personality to the game like Theegala. He finished inside the top 10 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the PLAYERS Championship. Theegala should be riding high headed to Houston. He can get as hot as any player when he gets it going.

#4. Tony Finau

The anomaly that is trying to predict Tony Finau continues this week and I am left once again perplexed. Finau arrives this week with sights set this week on defending his 2023 Houston Open crown after he won last year by four shots. His approach play statistics for the last two months has been fantastic but he has not been able to manifest that into the results he wanted.

There have been numerous rough patches in his career with the putter, but what I have seen this season is borderline hopeless. As we know and watched with Scottie Scheffler for nearly a full season, no ballstriking prowess can completely cover up a putrid putter. It's possible that it returns this week on these relatively simplistic greens at Memorial Park, but I have to see it before I believe it.

#3. Will Zalatoris

I was surprised to see that Will Zalatoris has not previously competed in the Houston Open, but I believe this is a golf course that should suit his game perfectly. Zalatoris should feel right at home in Texas, and despite a lackluster performance at The PLAYERS, it would appear he has regained some of the ballstriking prowess that he leveraged to burst onto the scene as a Rookie and immediately show up at Major Championships.

Zalatoris still managed to gain +2.2 strokes on Approach at the PLAYERS even while missing the cut. That speaks to what TPC Sawgrass can do to you. One or two bad swings and it can erase an entire day of good play. I fully expect Zalatoris to rebound this week and will make it four straight weeks gaining at least +2 on approach. We already know what he is gearing up for next month in Georgia!

#2. Wyndham Clark

I generally feel like we, as a community of hardcore professional golf fans, move too slowly when adjusting our rankings on players who are performing at a level above their baseline. I say this because I believe Wyndham Clark may just be a top-3 player in the world right now. Clark has finished runner-up to Scottie Scheffler in his last two tournaments played and has been on the cusp of victory on both occasions.

He's got something intangible, I call it guts! His talent and skill from a ballstriking standpoint does not hold water to Scheffler, but Clark gets the absolute MOST out of his peak rounds and can catch fire with his putter. He's one of the longest players on the PGA Tour, a particular asset that should be well rewarded at Memorial Park. He's too good to continue to underate and underestimate.

#1. Scottie Scheffler

Scottie Scheffler continues his run as the best ball striker on the planet by a wide margin, and it might be time to say it, "Happy learned how to putt!". He won back to signature series events in the Arnold Palmer Invitational and THE PLAYERS. The train is running full steam ahead and the next stop is 3-in-a-row!

Scheffler has finished inside the top-10 in the past two seasons at the Houston Open, including a 2nd place in 2022. There is really not much else you can say about this guy, except to just sit back and enjoy the show. He's by a large margin the best ballstriker on the PGA Tour and if he can continue to build on his newly found confidence with the mallet style putter...it feels like a runaway train!

Best of luck this week Rotoballer family!

The Players Tour offers nearly 200 opportunities to play competitive golf in a fun atmosphere. The Players Tour offers:

  • Single-Day Events: There are approximately 170 single-day events hosted throughout Southern California.
  • The 2-Day Series : These 14 events are composed of 90 player fields and the results are submitted to Junior Golf Scoreboard (JGS) and AJGA.
  • Series Championship: There is a Series Championship at the end of every season that the top point finishers will earn a special invite to. Results are submitted to JGS and AJGA.
  • TTC Local Qualifiers: 15 one-day qualifiers for players to earn a spot in a specific Toyota Tour Cup Event.

Ready for the Next Level?

Once in The Players Tour, members can try and qualify for the prestigious Toyota Tour Cup. Here are the different ways players may do so:

pga tour schedule players

2. Toyota Tour Cup Qualifying School: 36-hole qualifying event for a year-long exemption to the Toyota Tour Cup. Ten percent (10%) of the final field size (boys and girls) will earn an exemption. No age divisions. The first Qualifying School will be held in May and the second will be held in December. * Points WILL NOT BE awarded for Qualifying School.

3. Local Qualifiers:  There are 15 one-day qualifiers throughout the year. From each qualifier, the top five (5) boys and top three (3) girls will earn exemptions to a specific Toyota Tour Cup tournament. The TTC event name will be listed on the qualifier page. Players will not have the option to transfer their exemption for a different TTC event. If they choose to forgo their spot in the TTC event that they qualified for, that spot will go to the next TTC member on the waiting list. Boys will then need to finish in the top 15 and girls in the top 10 at that TTC Event in order to retain their exemption for the remainder of the year.

4. 2024 Series Championships: The overall champion and runner-up for both boys and girls at each Series Championship will earn a Toyota Tour Cup Exemption.

TTC Exemption Conditions

  • If a player earns an exemption from the Series Championship and the Series Points Race within the same season, an exemption will not be extended to the next player on the Series Championship leaderboard nor the Points Race.
  • The Series Championship TTC exemption will be given to the overall champion and overall runner-up only regardless of the players’ Toyota Tour Cup status.
  • If there is more than one fully exempt player at the top of the points standings, the SCPGA Junior Tour will only drop down a maximum of two players.

How the PGA Tour Will Look in 2024, and How Players Will Get There and Stay There

How the PGA Tour Will Look in 2024, and How Players Will Get There and Stay There

  • Author: Bob Harig

Kyle Terada/USA Today

Eighteen months from now, the PGA Tour will embark on a new schedule, FedEx Cup format and change how players become eligible. Bob Harig offers a primer.

The last two weeks have seen some significant changes announced by commissioner Jay Monahan as to how future PGA Tour schedules will look and who is exempt to compete for the annual FedEx Cup title.

Among the differences will be a return after 10 years to the calendar-year schedule that will see the first official event of the new season played in January, rather than September.

Another is a strengthened alliance with the DP World Tour that will see the top 10 players from the Race to Dubai – not already exempt on the PGA Tour – become PGA Tour members .

Several other changes will occur starting next year, with a few details to be worked out along the way.

With the first co-sanctioned regular event between the PGA Tour and DP World Tour this week at the Genesis Scottish Open, here is a summary.

Calendar Year Schedule

The 2024 FedEx Cup season will begin at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in January and end at the Tour Championship in late August.

Unlike years past, only the top 70 players in the FedEx Cup standings through the regular season will qualify (instead of the top 125) for the first of three FedEx Cup playoff events – which will see the purses at the FedEx St. Jude and the BMW Championship increase to $20 million.

But that doesn’t mean players who finish outside of the top 70 lose their PGA Tour cards. In a return to the days following the start of the FedEx Cup in 2007, the fall events – apparently six – will serve as a place for those outside of the top 70 to continue to compete and try to retain their playing cards.

The exempt list will still be the top 125 players, but those six tournaments will provide an opportunity for those outside of the magic number to move in, and for those who are comfortable to potentially qualify for other big events by moving into the top 50 in the world rankings or earning a spot at the Tournament of Champions or the Masters .

How The Fall Will Work

There will not be a reset for players who finish outside of the top 70. That means those who are 70th to roughly 95th in the standings are safe to keep their fully exempt status for the following year. They can play as little or as much as they want.

Players below that risk losing their cards and those who are outside of the top 125 can improve their positions. It is unclear if it will simply be a continuation of FedEx Cup points earned to that point, but those players will not be able to displace those who finished in the top 70.

And FedEx points earned in the fall will not count toward the following season.

The Global Series

Monahan announced plans for a three-tournament “Global Series’’ that will invite the top 50 in the final FedEx Cup standings to play events in such places as the U.K., Middle East and Asia. The format and locations are to be determined. And so is the field size. It will likely be larger than 60 players, but these tournaments will offer $20 million purses with no cut. In theory, if players among the top 50 skip, the field will be filled going down the FedEx list. Players who do well in the fall, as well as those from the countries where the events are held, are likely to get invites to fill out the field.

What remains to be seen is: Will these events get World Ranking points? And will a majority of the top names participate? One of the benefits to the calendar season is it allows top players to take time off. Will they want to travel to faraway places?

The Korn Ferry Tour

The developmental tour that allows for players to earn a spot on the PGA Tour will undergo changes that increase the number of automatic PGA Tour cards from 25 to 30 but will eliminate what is now known as the Korn Ferry Tour Finals. That was established when the old Qualifying Tournament format was changed to not allow direct access to the PGA Tour.

As it will play out again this fall, those players who finish No. 1 to 75 on the Korn Ferry Tour points list along with those who finish 126th to 200th on the PGA Tour’s points list will convene for a series of tournaments that lead to 50 PGA Tour cards. Those who finished in the top 25 on the KFT are assured of a spot but their priority order can chance based on the results in the KFT finals.

That will change in 2023. Those final events will simply determine the top 30. Then there will be a Qualifying Tournament to determine who gets on the KFT but the top five spots and ties will get PGA Tour cards.

Where their priority is – do they fall directly behind the top 125 and ahead of the KFT qualifiers? – is still to be determined.

The Fallout

Whether these changes were made in response to LIV Golf is a matter of debate . The Tour has been working on different ideas for some time. And much of this is good.

The calendar schedule is welcome and when you consider that you need to be in the top 70 to make the FedEx Cup playoffs and will have potentially nine less tournaments (from the fall) to earn the points, the regular season should be more compelling. It puts more meaning on each tournament from January to August. It could lead to some of the top players competing more to make sure they get in the top 70. And it also removes the awkwardness of half the season being complete by the time the Masters is played.

From there, they need to be in the top 50 after the FedEx St. Jude to reach the BMW Championship. And then the top 30 for the Tour Championship, where the big FedEx payouts take place.

A potential issue could be the disparity between events that are getting big purse boosts and regular PGA Tour events. The Sentry Tournament of Champions goes to $15 million; the Genesis, Arnold Palmer, WGC-Match Play and Memorial go to $20 million; the Players Championship goes to $25 million. And the first two playoff events will also be $20 million.

If you’re the Honda Classic, with maybe a $9 or $10 million purse, the situation is not great. It follows Genesis and precedes Arnold Palmer and the Players. The Valspar Championship follows the Players and precedes the Match Play. The Valero Texas Open follows the Match Play and precedes the Masters.

Some of those big-money tournaments are traditionally skipped, but it will be harder to do so with those big purses and smaller fields.

It’s just something to consider amid a serious of positive enhancements for the PGA Tour.

What will Phil do next?

The short answer is prepare for the British Open . Mickelson will be making his 28th start at The Open and his sixth at the Old Course at St. Andrews, where he first played in 1995. Mickelson has never fared all that well at the home of golf, his best finish a tie for 11th in 2000 when Tiger Woods romped to an eight-shot victory. But he’s never missed a cut there, either.

“I love the golf course,’’ Mickelson said at the LIV Golf event outside of Portland, where he finished in a tie for 40th . “When I played there in ’15 (a tie for 20th), I thought the greens were difficult, they have a strong blade of grass, and you really have to roll it well. When they are like that they really don’t break a ton and you can make a lot of putts.

Phil Mickelson acknowledges the crowd at the LIV Golf Invitational at Pumpkin Ridge outside Portland, Oregon.

Phil Mickelson will make his 28th British Open start in two weeks.

“I putted terrible and for me it comes down to a having a good putting week because the golf course sets up really well. If I miss it left, left is fine all day for me on that golf course and so I can play my miss and get around just fine.

“And there’s something spiritual about playing there. I really enjoy it. I’m really looking forward to getting back there.’’

Mickelson, 52, could use some divine intervention for his game at this point. Since his self-imposed four-month break, the six-time major winner has played eight rounds of golf and broke par just once – in his very first round at the LIV Golf tournament outside of London. He missed the cut at the U.S. Open and was out of sorts at the Portland LIV event, where he shot scores of 75-75-76 to finish 10 over par and 23 shots back of winner Branden Grace.

“My game feels a lot better than I’m scoring,’’ he said. “A lot of good shots and then I’m making a lot of mistakes that are costing me five, six shots a round. I’m not discouraged. I actually putted terrible in London and at the U.S. Open. I’ve putted well (at the Portand event). It just doesn’t feel that far off. I actually feel pretty good. But I’m not scoring yet.’’

Mickelson, who won The Open nine years ago at Muirfield, said he will head to the Old Course to keep working. “I’m going to go early and spend a little more time there,’’ he said.

Fore! Things

1. J.T. Poston’s wire-to-wire win at the John Deere Classic was the first such victory on the PGA Tour since Joaquin Niemann did so at the Genesis Invitational in February.

2. Organizers of the JP McManus pro-am in Ireland did Tiger Woods a favor, giving him afternoon tee times for both Monday and Tuesday. He begins play at 9:05 a.m. ET on Monday, which is 2:05 p.m. in Ireland. The pro-am has attracted an all-star cast of players that includes Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy , Rickie Fowler, Scottie Scheffler , Matt Fitzpatrick, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka and many others. The players are not paid for their appearance, with all proceeds going to charity.

3. Jediah Morgan finished last at the LIV Golf Portland event, shooting scores of 76-84-77 to trail the 47th-place finisher, Shaun Norris, by four strokes. It was a tough week for Morgan, a 22-year-old Australian who earlier this year won the Fortinet Australian PGA Championship by 11 strokes. He tied for 30th in the first LIV Golf event outside of London, then missed the cut at the U.S. Open. For his efforts, Morgan received $154,000 for the first event and $120,000 for the second.

4. LIV Golf has made charitable contributions at each of its first two events, directing more than $1 million to local charities at both the London and Portland tournaments. It did not make a big deal out of donations, simply sending out a press release. Perhaps it could make a point to donate to women’s causes, including women’s golf initiatives, and getting behind an initiative that makes a difference.

Ryder Cup Fallout

While there remains some doubt on the European team side as to whether those competing in LIV Golf events will be eligible for the Ryder Cup – players such as Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer and Sergio Garcia last week made it seem clear they believed nothing should change  – the American side seems to offer little debate.

And that’s from U.S. captain Zach Johnson.

“So what I know is this: in order to play on the Ryder Cup team, whether you’re top six (automatic qualifiers) or a (captain’s) pick, you must garner Ryder Cup points through the PGA of America,’’ Johnson said at the John Deere Classic. “In order to garner Ryder Cup points through the PGA of America, you have to be a member of the PGA of America.

“The way that we’re members of the PGA of America is through the PGA Tour. I’ll let you connect the dots from there.’’

That suggests that players such as Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau – who all starred for the U.S. team last fall at Whistling Straits – won’t be part of the Ryder Cup in Rome. Phil Mickelson ’s slam-dunk future captaincy is also now in doubt.

LIV Golf officials have pushed back on this narrative. A look at the PGA of America bylaws shows that membership in the organization can be obtained in many ways, including being members of other tours. Of course, the PGA of America can change its rules. And since a player has to earn points via the PGA Tour to make the team automatically, this only comes into play for captain’s picks. And a captain, if so motivated, can simply not pick any of these players.

Johnson, 46, has played on five U.S. Ryder Cup teams, been an assistant at the 2018 Ryder Cup, the 2019 Presidents Cup and again at the 2021 Ryder Cup. He’s won two major championships, including the last Open to be played at St Andrews in 2015.

“I’ve got some friends that have decided to go that route," Johnson said. "A lot of individuals that I'm for. I mean, these are my friends. I'm for them. I want them to do well. I want them to, you know, find contentment or happiness in whatever it may be. It's not for me to say how that develops or how they find that. I will say I have the utmost respect for them individually.

“I would hope, and I'm not concerned about this, that they would have the respect for me and who I stand for and what I stand for. And I don't think it's very secretive or outlandish in saying that I'm for the PGA Tour. I'm for the individuals that paved the way for me in this great Tour, this platform in order to entertain, compete and I would say utilize for the betterment of others, not just my family. I'm for that.’’

Meanwhile, European captain Henrik Stenson continues to be linked to LIV Golf. He has not played the first two events, nor has his name officially been added to the list of players who will compete at Bedminster in three weeks. If he does make the leap, then what?

Money Matters

A story circulated since the first week of the LIV Golf Invitational Series in London: players with guaranteed contracts were not being withheld purse money as it was played off against their advances. So, in other words, it was portrayed as a player would not receive prize money until it totaled more than what he was being guaranteed for the year.

Charl Schwartzel, who won the first event and was on the winning team, earned $4.75 million. He went to Twitter to refute claims that he was not paid that sum. Other players and an agent confirmed the same thing to SI.com.

At a news conference last week at the Portland event, a LIV Golf interview moderator to took time out to also refute the claim, saying that all prize money is separate from any guaranteed contracts.

The Open Countdown

The Open begins in 10 days at the Old Course in St Andrews, Scotland. It will be the 150th playing of the championship that dates to 1860, and years of planning has gone into celebrating the occasion, which was supposed to occur last year but was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Old Course will stage The Open for the 30th time, more than any other venue, the first being in 1873 when Tom Kidd won the tournament as it was played for the first time on an 18-hole course.

The last staging of The Open at the Old Course was in 2015, when Zach Johnson won in a playoff over Louis Oosthuizen and Marc Leishman.

Six players earned their way into the field last week as the highest-ranked in the world not already exempt: Aaron Wise (USA), Brian Harman (USA), Sebastian Munoz (Colombia), Sepp Straka (Austria), Luke List (USA) and Si Woo Kim (South Korea) made it through that avenue.

Six more players qualified via finishing among the top three players not already in the top 10 at the Irish Open and the John Deere Classic. At the Irish Open, it was John Catlin, Fabrizio Zanotti and Davis Law. All three tied for fourth to earn their spots. At the John Deere Classic, winner J.T. Poston, Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Emiliano Grillo (who were tied for second) also earned a trip to St. Andrews via the Open Qualifying Series.

Another 16 made the field via four Final Qualifying Sites in the United Kingdom.

This week’s Scottish Genesis Open – a co-sanctioned PGA Tour/DP World Tour event – will offer three spots to the top three finishers in the top 10 not already exempt. And the Barbasol Championship – also co-sanctioned – will offer the final spot for a player finishing in the top 10 not already exempt.

Social Matters

 > The Goat?

 > Oops.

The Genesis Scottish Open has for years been the event played the week prior to the British Open, typically attracting a strong field of participants. The event will have its best-ever field as it is now co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour. That means players on the PGA Tour can earn FedEx Cup points and have another event count toward their membership requirements. It is especially helpful for those who compete on both Tours.

The result has been a boon to the field, as 14 of the top-ranked 15 players in the world will take part, led by No. 1 and Masters champion Scottie Scheffler. DP World Tour CEO Keith Pelley said “it will be the strongest regular tour event in our history.’’

The tournament is being played at the Renaissance Club, which is next door to Muirfield in Gullane, Scotland. Although the Renaissance is not a links along the lines of many Open venues, it is still an excellent primer for the kind of feel and shots to be played a week later at St. Andrews.

Seven Days On Tour: Inside the weekly routine of a PGA Tour pro

pga tour schedule players

Billy Horschel is a fountain of energy. He talks fast, walks fast and can’t help himself when it comes to Twitter. He’s a human can of Red Bull. These are not necessarily good traits for a golfer, but he’s done OK. Horschel has won five times on the PGA Tour after an impressive college career at the University of Florida, and in 2014 captured the FedEx Cup.

At 32, and in his ninth season on tour, the Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., resident is also a creature of habit and has the rhythm of life as a professional golfer down. What’s a typical week like for a PGA Tour player? Most fans only see the shots Thursday through Sunday, but there’s a lot more going on than meets the eye. So he gave us a peek.

This is when most of us are flying into town, except when you’re coming from another tournament on Sunday night or flying somewhere really far when you might get in a day or two earlier. The extra day of rest and to catch up on personal things is important because this is really the only “off” day I’ll have. The only time I will go to the course on a Monday is at a major, the Players and sometimes a World Golf Championship event. The WGC-Dell Match Play was one of those cases because the tournament started on Wednesday, so I flew into Texas late Monday morning, had lunch at the course and played nine holes with Brandt Snedeker.

My wife, Brittany, and our three children don’t often come on the road with me, maybe a handful of times a year. It’s a lot to ask them to travel as much as I’m on the road (the kids are 5, 2 and 3 months old now, too, so it’s a lot of work). Earlier in my career, I used to fly private most weeks, but since my family doesn’t travel nearly as much as they once did, I only do it 15-20 percent of the time now. At $5,000 an hour, it’s also expensive, and most weeks I don’t need it anyway. Delta is my “private” airline, and I share it with lots of my friends.

One thing I have figured out is that if you look at all the best players in the world, they are relentless with their routine. I’ve always had a routine even going back to my days in college at Florida, but it took about six or seven years out here to find what worked best for me and refine it through some trial and error.

Most weeks I’m up by 6 or 6:30 at the latest—I can’t sleep in anymore even if I try. Before I even get to the course, I’ve already been to the gym for an hour, with my workout focused on getting the muscles loose, core strengthening and flexibility. Fitness is something I’ve really taken seriously the last handful of years, especially as I’ve gotten older. We hit so many balls and have such long days, it’s helped me stay healthy. I’m only 32, but I feel more aches pains every day.

Once I’m at the course, breakfast is pretty simple: orange juice, oatmeal, yogurt and granola, fruit, a banana, and one piece of toast with peanut butter. I used to have eggs but found out that I have a moderate allergy, so I don’t eat them anymore. Then it’s time to practice.

Typically, I’ll text another player the night before to see if they want to play a practice round together. Sometimes I’ll run into a guy in the locker room and ask if they’re playing. Sneds and Webb Simpson are two guys who I play with a lot. Since Sneds and I have the same swing coach (Todd Anderson) and same stats guy (Mark Horton), we’ll play little games against each other on the course—mostly chipping or putting contests for a little extra something. Whatever the data says we need to work on the most. Unfortunately, I’m behind on the ledger because he’s been kicking my butt lately, but having competitions against each other has been really beneficial in sharpening my game and focus. Plus, it’s more fun that way.

The majority of the time we’ve played these courses so much, the rest of the round is just about seeing it in its current conditions. I might also be working on certain things in my swing to fit that course. It’s easy to hit every kind of shot you want on the range, but nothing can replicate having one ball and having to hit a shot on call on the golf course, especially with a little cash on the line.

Afterward, I’ll have lunch, hit balls for another 30-40 minutes then putt for 30-40 minutes and call it a day. Before I leave the course, I’ll see my physio (Alex Bennett) and spend another 30 minutes getting worked on and stretched out. It’s something I’ve done more of, again, as I’ve gotten older.

Wednesdays are pro-am days. The rounds can be long, but they’re important for us and the tour, and it’s the same routine for me before and after the round. Once I’m playing, though, I try to spend the first four or five holes focusing my energy on the amateurs, getting to know them, chit-chat, giving tips.

The next handful of holes I’m focusing on whatever I’m working on with my swing. Right now, it’s trying not to over-turn in my backswing. When I do, I lose consistency in my ball-striking, which is something that has always been a strength of my game. The feeling I’m trying to capture is that my backswing is driven by my arms rather than with my body. It’s weird because it feels like I have no power, but by not over-turning in my backswing I’m still able to generate power, just in a little different way. It’s helping me be more consistent, which is the goal.

At the end of the round, though, the day is far from over. After the pro-am, I’ll again hit balls for 30-40 minutes and chip and putt for another 30 on top of that. Here’s it’s just fine-tuning things so that we’re all set for Thursday.

RELATED: The Horschels' battle off the course

Once I’m back to the hotel, I’ll get some dinner, watch TV and then it’s zzzz. The goal is to go to sleep by 10. A lot of guys will go out every night, but that’s never been me. I’ll go out maybe two or three times during the week, maybe grab dinner with Sneds or Scott Piercy, another good buddy of mine out here, and just order room service or pick up dinner the other nights. That also allows me time to catch up with my family via Facetime, but that’s usually quick. We get to the point in a few minutes, and it’s done. We’re not on our phones like teenagers. But the time I spend not thinking about golf, I’ve figured out as I’ve gotten older, has been better for my mind and has had an impact on my game. Like I said, you can over-do it out here.

The rest of the time I watch a ton of TV, especially sports. I have 15-20 shows that I keep up with on a regular basis and watch on Netflix or iTunes. Everything else is mindless TV so I can check stuff out on the Internet and get in Twitter debates. Social media is entertaining, but it’s also something I’ve done less of the last year and am working on doing less of period. It’s just a time suck, and I need a break from it because it’s not really helping anything when it comes to what I’m out here trying to accomplish. My goal this year is to read a few more books when I’m in the hotel room.

Thursday through Sunday

Once the tournament starts, I’m the same creature of habit. If I’m in the morning wave, I wake up 3 hours and 15 minutes to 3½ hours before my tee time and arrive at the course 2½ hours to 2 hours and 45 minutes before I’m scheduled to go off. I don’t really have a preference on tee times, but if I’m going late-early the first two days, I’m usually only getting four or five hours of sleep between rounds because by the time I get back to my hotel and fall asleep it’s late.

billy-horschel-working-out.jpg

Twitter.com/BillyHo_Golf

The first stop at the course is the fitness trailer to warm up, get the blood flowing, warm up my muscles and get them activated. Yes, activated. They need to be ready to fire to make a proper golf swing. Then it’s off to breakfast in player dining for about 30 minutes.

Next, I start my warm up an hour and 15 minutes to a 1½ hours before my tee time. I do a longer warm up than most players—anywhere between 30-45 minutes longer. I could warm up in 45 minutes like everyone else, but I don’t like to feel rushed. I move quickly enough as it is, so slowing down and taking my time helps me focus.

If I’m not playing until the afternoon, I try to do a little workout in the morning—nothing too crazy, just enough to get things moving. I get to the course the same amount of time before my round and go through the same routine. If I’m playing late on the weekend, lunch before the round is usually a sandwich or some chicken and vegetables. I’ve always had a routine, and just sort of figure it out on my own over time to what works best.

billy-horschel-high-five-fans-honda-classic.jpg

Like with the pro-am, my day isn’t over after the round, either. I’d say 98 percent of the time, I do around 30 minutes of practice after my round, no matter how I played. It’s something I have always done because I guess in my head that if I didn’t do something after the round and come out the next day, I’d feel like I should have hit a few balls. I like to have my swing ingrained in my mind. It’s a comfort factor for me and makes me feel like I’m checking off the boxes of what I need to do.

It’s tough for me to say that I over-practiced early in my career because I’ve always been a guy who believes in practicing a lot, but after about seven years I figured out the benefits aren’t always there. I’m in my 10th year out here, so when I don’t play well I don’t stress out as much. Early on, I would practice all day, hitting ball after ball, and spend a ton of time putting. At this point, though, it feels like everything is pretty good. When it’s not, I just chalk it up to a bad day and move on. Still, to this day it’s a balance that I struggle with.

Whenever I do walk off the practice area, though, it’s at least 30-40 minutes before I leave the course because I’m getting worked on by my physio again. There are other obligations on occasion, too. At the Dell Match Play, after my round on Thursday I had a visit to one of their corporate tents as an obligation for one my sponsors. It only lasted about 20 minutes but it’s an important obligation. A few weeks earlier at Bay Hill, I did some filming for Zurich, another sponsor, along with Justin Rose. That was on a Tuesday afternoon and lasted about 90 minutes. And if I’m fortunate and playing well, I’ll spend time speaking to the media as well.

In other words, most weeks, there’s a lot more going on for us than what you see inside the ropes.

PGA TOUR releases full 2021-22 schedule

• As part of Strategic Alliance, Genesis Scottish Open, Barbasol Championship and Barracuda Championship will be included in both FedExCup and Race to Dubai, while Irish Open will see a significant increase in prize money.

• PGA TOUR’s schedule of 48 events includes the move of the first FedExCup Playoffs event to TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee, sponsored by FedEx.

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Florida, USA, and VIRGINIA WATER, Surrey, England – The PGA TOUR and European Tour today unveiled new details around their Strategic Alliance, with the PGA TOUR also releasing its 2021-22 PGA TOUR Season schedule.

The landmark agreement, announced in November 2020, further enhances and connects the ecosystem of men’s professional golf through a number of areas, including global scheduling, prize funds and playing opportunities for the respective memberships.

The latter event also has a new title sponsor in Genesis, the luxury automotive brand from South Korea, who will now title sponsor two tournaments on the PGA TOUR, with the Genesis Scottish Open joining The Genesis Invitational, which Genesis has titled since 2017; The Genesis Invitational will once again be played at The Riviera Country Club next year (February 14-20).

The Genesis Scottish Open (July 4-10), which is part of the European Tour’s Rolex Series, retains its place in golf’s global calendar the week ahead of The Open Championship (July 11-17), a date confirmed through to 2025. The player field will be a split between members of both Tours.

The tournament will also benefit from the continued commitment of the Scottish Government, managed by Visit Scotland – the agreement also running through 2025.

“We are delighted to welcome Genesis as a title sponsor of a European Tour event for the first time,” said European Tour Chief Executive Keith Pelley. “Genesis has a strong history of sponsorship on the PGA TOUR through The Genesis Invitational, and their commitment to the Scottish Open will further enhance one of our premier events of the season.

Although it will be on the PGA TOUR’s official schedule for the first time, the Genesis Scottish Open has a rich history on the European Tour, appearing in the Tour’s first two official seasons (1972 and 1973) and as part of the Tour’s International Schedule since 1986. It has also been part of the Rolex Series – the European Tour’s premium series of events – since the Series’ inception in 2017.

“Adding an existing, strong title sponsor in Genesis to our Strategic Alliance in the form of the Genesis Scottish Open – to be sanctioned by both Tours – is a significant step for the global game,” said PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan. “Coupled with their support of The Genesis Invitational at Riviera, we’re incredibly proud to forge a deeper relationship with this premier brand across the global game.”

Genesis will take over the title sponsorship of the event from abrdn, who are exploring ways for the decade-long partnership with the European Tour to continue moving forward. The venue for the 2022 Genesis Scottish Open will be confirmed at a later date.

“We are extremely excited to become title sponsor of the Scottish Open at this historic moment, as the PGA TOUR and European Tour announce details on their Strategic Alliance,” said Jay Chang, Global head of Genesis. “Genesis and golf share a culture centered on respect, mutual admiration and innovation. We will continue to strengthen our partnership with both Tours to deliver this spirit to golfers, communities and individuals around the world through successful tournaments.”

Paul Bush, Director of Events at VisitScotland, said, “We are thrilled the European Tour and PGA TOUR have identified the Genesis Scottish Open to further develop their Strategic Alliance, and there is no more fitting stage than Scotland, the Home of Golf, on which to embark on such a historic journey.”

In addition to the Genesis Scottish Open being co-sanctioned, there will also be access for 50 European Tour members to each of two PGA TOUR events in 2022 for the first time – the Barbasol Championship, which will be played concurrently with the Genesis Scottish Open, and the Barracuda Championship, which will be played alongside the following week’s 150th Open Championship at St. Andrews. Both events will be added to the Race to Dubai for European Tour members.

It was also confirmed today that as part of the Strategic Alliance and collaboration between the two Tours, the Irish Open will see a significant increase in prize money for its annual European Tour event – to $6 million, starting in 2022 – nearly double the amount on offer at Mount Juliet last month. In addition, the PGA TOUR will continue to work with the European Tour on commercial opportunities for the event.

“When we announced the Strategic Alliance at the end of last year, we said it was a landmark moment for global golf’s ecosystem that would benefit all members of both Tours,” said Pelley. “Today’s announcement underlines that promise, with further enhancements to the Genesis Scottish Open, a strengthening of the Irish Open for our members, and direct access for European Tour members to two PGA TOUR events.

“There has been considerable collaboration behind the scenes between our two Tours since November’s Alliance was unveiled, and we are delighted to share these initial developments, which demonstrate our commitment to working together for the betterment of our sport globally. We will have more to announce in the coming months – this is most definitely just the beginning.”

“With today’s news, I am pleased to say that the PGA TOUR and the European Tour are both stronger than at any time in our history, as we are positioned to grow – together – over the next 10 years faster than we have at any point in our existence,” said Monahan. “We are committed to continuing to evolve and adapt, and with our ever-strengthening partnership with the European Tour, to take the global game to the heights we all know it is capable of.”

PGA TOUR Schedule Highlights

The 2021-22 PGA TOUR Schedule includes several significant enhancements and features a total of 48 official events – 45 during the FedExCup Regular Season along with three 2022 FedExCup Playoffs events.

The 2022 portion of the schedule will kick off the PGA TOUR’s new, nine-year domestic media rights agreements with ViacomCBS, Comcast/NBC and ESPN. As part of the agreement, all three 2022 FedExCup Playoffs events will be broadcast domestically on NBC network television, beginning a rotation that continues with CBS hosting all three events in 2023.

Headline news includes the change in location and venue for the kickoff of the FedExCup Playoffs to TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee, starting in 2022, replacing the Regular Season event that has been held in Memphis since 1958. FedEx will serve as the title sponsor of the event, to be known as the FedEx St. Jude Championship (August 8-14), replacing existing title sponsor Northern Trust after this year’s playing of THE NORTHERN TRUST at Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, New Jersey.

“FedEx is excited that the first event of the 2022 FedExCup Playoffs will be hosted in our hometown of Memphis, Tennessee,” said Raj Subramaniam, President and Chief Operating Officer of FedEx Corporation. “We are proud of our history and the community impact we’ve had since becoming title sponsor of our hometown TOUR stop in 1986. We look forward to the impact it will bring to our local community and will continue to use it as a platform to showcase the groundbreaking work being done by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to golf fans around the world.”

“Since the inception of the FedExCup in 2007, we have made a number of changes to enhance the quality of the FedExCup Playoffs for our players, fans and partners,” said Monahan. “Thanks to the continued support from FedEx as the TOUR’s umbrella partner, we’re proud to bring the start of the FedExCup to Memphis and a course loved by our players. Not only will it be a great test worthy of Playoff golf, but we also anticipate tremendous enthusiasm from a community that has steadfastly supported the PGA TOUR for more than 60 years. And, of course, the important work of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will continue to be front and center.

“In totality, the 2021-22 PGA TOUR Schedule, combined with the momentum we have with our now-entrenched partnership with the European Tour, puts the PGA TOUR in a position of strength within professional golf like never before. We’re confident this schedule will give the world’s best players the opportunity to do what they do best – inspire and entertain our fans around the globe while helping our tournaments make a significant impact in their respective communities.”

The 2022 FedExCup Playoffs will continue to include the BMW Championship (August 15-21), which rotates next year to Wilmington Country Club in Wilmington, Delaware, and the FedExCup Playoffs finale, the TOUR Championship (August 22-28), once again slated for East Lake Golf Club.

The PGA TOUR’s flagship event, THE PLAYERS Championship (March 7-13), will anchor a true Florida Swing in 2022, which features four consecutive events through The Sunshine State in the spring, including the Valspar Championship, which was played in April/May this past year. THE PLAYERS will be in year three of its March date and as a kickoff to the Season of Championships, with Justin Thomas returning as defending champion.

The Memorial Tournament presented by Workday (May 30-June 5) enters the first year of a 10-year agreement in 2022 with new presenting sponsor, Workday. Founded in 1976 by golf legend Jack Nicklaus and held annually at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, the tournament partners for the first time with three-time NBA champion and two-time MVP Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors, and Ayesha Curry, an entrepreneur, host and New York Times bestselling author.

After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the RBC Canadian Open (June 6-12) in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, returns to the schedule in 2022 at St. George’s Golf and Country Club. Rory McIlroy won the last RBC Canadian Open, played in 2019.

Other notable items and changes to the 2021-22 PGA TOUR Schedule include (in chronological order):

• As previously announced, the Fortinet Championship (September 13-19), with new title sponsor Fortinet, kicks off the 2021-22 FedExCup Regular Season at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, California.

• The Ryder Cup will be played the week following the Fortinet Championship, with nine official events played during the balance of 2021 for a total of 10 events to be played in the fall.

• The reconfigured Asia Swing will begin with THE CJ CUP @ SUMMIT (October 11-17), which moves to the United States for the second year in a row and will be staged at The Summit Club in Las Vegas, Nevada, delivering back-to-back weeks of PGA TOUR golf in Las Vegas, as the Shriners Children’s Open will be contested October 4-10.

• Following THE CJ CUP @ SUMMIT will be the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP and World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions, with additional details to be available in the near future.

• As previously announced, World Wide Technology embarks on its first year of title sponsorship of the TOUR’s original event in Mexico, the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba (November 1-7).

• The Sentry Tournament of Champions – a PGA TOUR winners-only event – leads off the 2022 calendar year (January 3-9).

• The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am (January 31-February 6) and the Waste Management Phoenix Open (February 7-13) trade spots in the schedule, as the TOUR’s event at TPC Scottsdale remains in its traditional date of Super Bowl week.

• The Puerto Rico Open (February 28-March 6) will be played as an additional event alongside the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard.

• The Corales Puntacana Championship (March 21-27), in its first year under an extended term, will be played as an additional event alongside the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play.

• The Mexico Championship (April 25-May 1) returns to the calendar as a PGA TOUR co-sponsored event, no longer under the World Golf Championships umbrella. With the field of 132 players, there is an anticipation of additional Mexican golfers in the field to help in inspire and grow the game in one of golf’s key emerging markets.

• With the biennial Presidents Cup being held at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte in 2022, the Wells Fargo Championship (May 2-8) will be contested for one year at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm in Potomac, Maryland.

• The John Deere Classic (June 27-July 3), traditionally played the week prior to The Open Championship, moves one week earlier.

• Following The Open Championship, the 3M Open (July 18-24), Rocket Mortgage Classic (July 25-31) and Wyndham Championship (August 1-7) close out the FedExCup Regular Season.

The European Tour will announce the initial portion of its 2022 schedule later this month, with the full season announcement to follow in due course.

2024 Players Championship purse, prize money: Payout, Scottie Scheffler's winner's share from $25 million pool

Big stakes and big money were on the line this week at the pga tour's flagship event.

players-championship-trophy-g.jpg

The 2024 Players Championship represents the biggest non-major tournament on the PGA Tour schedule, and as such, it appropriately offers the biggest purse. With an event of this magnitude, it is only right the payday matches the stakes as a total of $25 million will be up for grabs this week at TPC Sawgrass.

The largest prize pool of the season, the purse at the Players Championship also shelled out the largest winner's check of the young year: $4.5 million. It marks the second straight season that this structure will be in place, and Scottie Scheffler has claimed both winner's shares as he became the first golfer to go back-to-back at The Players Championship  with a come-from-behind victory on Sunday.

In fact, Scheffler has collected $8.5 million for just 14 days of work over the last two weeks thanks to his $4 million winner's check from the Arnold Palmer Invitational, a signature PGA Tour event, last week. Certainly good work if you can get it.

Each of the top 35 finishers at The Players Championship collected six-figure sums with those inside the top 13 cashing more than $500,000 and those inside the top five clearing $1 million. While only Scheffler raised trophy at week's end, the Players champion was hardly be the only winner at the PGA Tour's flagship event.

Let's take a look at the payout list for the 2024 Players Championship for the top 65 players who make the weekend at TPC Sawgrass.
