Bad Bunny Anchors a Year of Explosive Growth for Latin Music

The most nominated artist at the Latin Grammys has earned blockbuster numbers on streaming and on tour in 2022. He’s far from the only Spanish-language artist finding fresh listeners.

The top nominee at the 23rd annual Latin Grammy Awards on Thursday is the Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny, with 10 nods for “ Un Verano Sin Ti ,” his chart-topping, streaming-dominating release that is the year’s most popular LP.

But for the wider Latin music business, Bad Bunny is the cherry on top of an extraordinary year on streaming services and on tour, by artists including the singers Karol G, from Colombia, and Anitta , from Brazil; genre-crossing innovators like the Spanish pop disrupter Rosalía ; and regional Mexican bands like Grupo Firme.

Long seen as a niche field, Latin music is continuing to penetrate fresh markets, with streaming platforms helping artists reach broad new audiences, who in turn are buying up hundreds of millions of dollars in concert tickets.

“Latin music is having a moment,” said Gary Gersh, a longtime music executive who is the president of global touring and talent for the concert company AEG Presents. “But it’s not going away. The doors have been blown off.”

In the first half of 2022, sales of Latin music recordings reached $510 million in the United States, a new peak, according to the Recording Industry Association of America, and may pass $1 billion by the end of the year. Of that total, 97 percent came from streaming — indicating an audience that is young and technologically connected. According to Spotify, half its users around the world stream at least one Latin song each month.

In the past, Latin artists were few and far between among the industry’s top tours, but that is changing. According to data from the trade publication Pollstar, the top 100 tours around the world for the first three quarters of 2022 includes 13 Latin artists who together sold $436 million in tickets — up from nine with $205 million in sales for the same period in 2019, the last comparable year before the pandemic. (Pollstar’s tracking period each year begins in late November.)

Bad Bunny, 28, is the leader of Latin’s current wave, with sales and tour numbers that routinely rival and beat English-language pop titans like Taylor Swift and Beyoncé. His latest album notched 13 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, more than any other title this year. According to industry estimates, his two tours in 2022 — one hitting arenas, the other stadiums — will top the year-end global touring list with around $400 million in combined sales, putting him in the league of giants like Swift and U2.

Born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, Bad Bunny — his stage name comes from a childhood costume — represents a new kind of pop star , with an eclectic style and broad, global appeal. After emerging in 2016, he built his career as a featured guest, rapping and singing on songs by artists like J Balvin and Cardi B, before releasing his first album, “X100PRE,” in 2018.

Since then he has become inescapable, appealing not only to Spanish-speaking listeners but to fans whose personal playlists may also be dotted with hip-hop, K-pop and everything else. Meanwhile, Bad Bunny has expanded into a global brand. He has an Adidas sneaker partnership, has wrestled in the W.W.E . and is set to star in the new Marvel superhero movie “ El Muerto ,” from Sony Pictures — while also being outspoken about political and social struggles in Puerto Rico.

“I don’t think that pop culture really has borders or language barriers anymore,” said Jbeau Lewis of United Talent Agency, who books Bad Bunny’s tours. “I don’t know that a fan necessarily draws a distinction between BTS, Taylor Swift or Bad Bunny.”

When tickets to his arena outing, El Último Tour del Mundo, were put on sale in April 2021, it became one of the fastest-selling tours in Ticketmaster’s history, and a key data point showing the industry that fans were eager to return to concerts amid the pandemic.

Lewis said that while those tickets were being sold, he could see in Ticketmaster’s back-end system that, for some shows, up to 300,000 fans were waiting to buy more — a sign of huge demand. That day, Lewis said, he and Noah Assad, Bad Bunny’s manager, had a discussion and realized, “Oh man, we need to hold some stadiums for next year.”

The recent Latin touring powerhouses encompass a wide spectrum of aesthetics and traditions. Karol G, known for neon-colored wigs and her Caribbean-flavored hit “Provenza,” made a splash at Coachella in April — where she paid tribute to past Latin crossovers like “Macarena” and Daddy Yankee’s “Gasolina” — and then sold $70 million in tickets for her North American tour. That may be the biggest haul in history for a Latin female act.

Maná, a veteran Mexican rock band, played 12 times at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, Calif., as part of a residency this year, and just announced a North American arena tour for 2023. Grupo Firme, a Mexican banda group that has collaborated with pan-Latin pop stars like Camilo and Maluma, has sold $57 million in tickets in 2022, according to Pollstar.

Historically, artists singing primarily in Spanish — or any language other than English — faced a huge barrier to success when it came to radio. But streaming has provided a path around that obstacle, and many Latin acts have flourished as a result. An early indication of this shift was “ Despacito ,” the 2017 song by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, which became a huge hit on YouTube — though its success was partly attributable to a radio-friendly remix featuring Justin Bieber.

“The barrier is not the same as it used to be, that you had to have a song at radio so you can sell lots of tickets,” said Gersh, of AEG. “I think we are going to see more music that isn’t sung in English reaching English-speaking kids, and we’re probably going to see more English-language music reach into other countries where English isn’t the first language.”

“That, to me, is the real alternative music — it’s the alternative to the mainstream,” added Gersh, who was one of the figures who kicked off the alternative rock explosion in the 1990s by signing Nirvana to DGC Records.

Radio is still lagging behind this wave. While Bad Bunny is the king of streaming — he was the most-streamed act on Spotify in 2020 and 2021, and stands a good chance of retaining the title this year — he is only the 119th most played artist on Top 40 radio stations so far this year, according to the tracking service Mediabase.

To some extent, demographic shifts can help explain the growth of Spanish-language music. As of 2021, 19 percent of the total United States population identified as Hispanic, up from 16 percent in 2010 and just 5 percent in 1970, according to Census data and the Pew Research Center .

Those fans can straddle multiple genres and cultural spaces, said AJ Ramos, a longtime radio and streaming programmer who is the head of artist partnerships for Latin music at YouTube. Using himself as an example — born in the United States, speaking Spanish at home in a Salvadorean family, but growing up a hip-hop fan — he describes those culture-straddling fans as representing “the 200 percent.”

“You have Mexican artists like Yahritza y Su Esencia and Fuerza Regida , who embrace American culture and embrace Latin culture, living in both spaces,” Ramos said. “That audience will go from a Kendrick Lamar record to a Fuerza Regida record.” (Yahritza y Su Esencia, a trio of siblings whose Mexican family migrated to an agricultural area of Washington State, is up for two Latin Grammys, including best new artist .)

That success — enabled by streaming and social media, and now amply visible on tour — will only continue in the future, said Maykol Sanchez, an executive at Spotify who handles Latin artist and label partnerships.

“In the past, it was harder,” Sanchez said. “Today, you can have an artist from Chile that has a hit, and it happens globally on Spotify, creating a space for that artist grow bigger.”

Facebook icon

Tickets On Sale Friday, January 28 12pm Local Time On Worldshottesttour.com

Proclaimed the most listened-to artist in the world for a second consecutive year by Spotify, Bad Bunny has distinguished himself for his revolutionary moves that constantly impact the music industry. Today, the multi-award-winning artist adds a new milestone to his career, announcing his first stadium tour “Bad Bunny: World’s Hottest Tour” across the United States and Latin America. Promoted by Live Nation and CMN in the U.S., the tour kicks off on August 5th at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, FL, making stops in Miami, Chicago, New York and many more before wrapping at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on September 30th, then heading out to Latin America in October. Tickets for this stadium tour will go on pre-sale beginning Wednesday, January 26 at 12pm local time. Subsequently, they will go on sale to the general public beginning Friday, January 28 at 12pm local time on worldshottesttour.com .

Joining Bad Bunny as special guests on select dates in the U.S. will be GRAMMY® nominated DJ and Record Producer, Alesso and ten-time GRAMMY® nominated artist, Diplo . With his music and visuals, Alesso creates experiences that have made him one of the most celebrated live performers. Diplo is one of the most dynamic forces in music today with billions of streams on some of the world’s best dance recordings.

This announcement is a clear representation of Bad Bunny’s extraordinary  growth as a global superstar. Just after announcing his tour “El Último Tour Del Mundo 2022” in April 2021, which will begin February 9th and will tour 35 indoor arenas across North America, the artist broke the record at Ticketmaster for the most ticket sales for a tour on its first day of sales since 2018. Bad Bunny quickly sold out all 35 shows, moving more than 500,000 tickets. In addition, the artist performed his first stadium concerts in December 2021, breaking audience records with two performances at the Hiram Bithorn Stadium in Puerto Rico. There is no doubt that after such success, “Bad Bunny: World’s Hottest Tour” in stadiums with an all new production will continue to elevate the artist’s career to new transcendental levels.

Over the past year, Bad Bunny has released top hits that have earned him the title of #1 Latin Artist in the US by Billboard for a third consecutive year and was also named one of the top 10 most popular global superstars. As if that were not enough, he is also the highest-ranking Latin act on Billboard’s general all genre chart “Top Artists,” ranking at #10, and is the artist with the most hits to reach the Top 10 of the “Hot Latin Songs” chart since the charts inception.

Adding to his great accomplishments in 2021, the artist closed the year by surprising his fans with the premiere of the music video for “Te Deseo Lo Mejor,” which he made in collaboration with The Simpsons . The series is known for bringing some of the most popular celebrities in the world to life in cartoon form and this time Bad Bunny caused a great impact with his participation, reaffirming his leading spot in the music industry.

After selling out his 36-date El Ultimo Tour Del Mundo arena tour in record time, and before even playing a single show from that tour — which kicks off Feb. 9 — Bad Bunny is announcing an ambitious 29-date stadium tour for 2022.

Promoted by Live Nation and CMN, Bad Bunny: World’s Hottest Tour kicks off Aug. 5 at Campus Stadium in Orlando, and will make 15 U.S. stops, including Yankee Stadium in New York, Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, and Fenway Park in Boston.

That’s very good news for the thousands of fans who weren’t able to score tickets for El Ultimo Tour del Mundo, which sold out in days. The World’s Hottest Tour also comes with a bonus: In the U.S., Bunny will feature DJ Alesso as a guest for 11 dates, and Diplo as a guest at two dates, including the final show at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles Sept. 30.

The tour then continues to Latin America for 14 stops in October, including Estadio Velez in Buenos Aires and Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.

Tickets will go on pre-sale Wednesday (Jan. 26) at 12 p.m. via worldshottesttour.com , and goes on sale to the general public on Friday, Jan. 28, also at 12 p.m.

The tour announcement was followed very quickly by a new album announcement, which Bad Bunny made via a video on Instagram reels.

Bad Bunny’s tour may be the most ambitious for a Latin artist ever in the U.S. But then again, the Puerto Rican star has been on a record-breaking streak for the past three years. Bunny (real name Benito Martínez Ocasio) was the top selling Latin artist of 2021 for the third consecutive year, according to MRC data, and the most streamed artist globally on Spotify for the second consecutive year. He is also the first artist to place an all-Spanish album at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 .

On the live front, in 2021 Bunny sold 480,000 tickets and grossed $84 million in a single day when his 2022 El Último Tour del Mundo tour went on sale. It became Ticketmaster’s top-selling tour for a first day since Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s On the Run II Tour in 2018.

In December 2021, Bunny played back-to-back shows at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in Puerto Rico, staging a festival-like performance that included multiple stages and environments. Whether this will serve as the template for Bunny’s upcoming stadium tour remains to be seen.

Ten PGA TOUR Americas players to watch during the Latin America Swing

Change Text Size

TULUM, Mexico – Kicking off its 16-event inaugural season Thursday with the Bupa Championship at Tulum, PGA TOUR Americas will set the bar high for the up-and-coming talents competing across Latin America and North America. By the end of the season, the new Tour will reward the best 10 players with 2025 Korn Ferry Tour cards. Before we get to that point, players will have to go through the six-event Latin America Swing to determine the top 60 who will secure exempt status for the North America Swing.

In no specific order, the following are 10 players worth watching during a busy nine-week stretch that will take PGA TOUR Americas across five countries in Latin America:

Davis Shore

This 25-year-old University of Alabama alum seems to be on the brink of moving to the next level. Making his Korn Ferry Tour debut earlier this month, he made back-to-back cuts in Argentina (T44) and Chile (T11) while posting three rounds of 65 or better. Recording five top 10 finishes between PGA TOUR Latinoamérica, where he was the Brazil Open runner-up and finished the season ranked 13th, and PGA TOUR Canada, where he won the Osprey Valley Open to finish the year ninth, Shore constantly proved his strength. He had a scoring average of 69.5 strokes across 60 rounds and 17 starts across both Tours last year.

Mateo Fernández de Oliveira

Coming off a strong 2023 season that saw him transition from an amateur to the pro ranks, this 24-year-old from Buenos Aires, Argentina, has gained experience and carries strong momentum heading into PGA TOUR Americas. As the 2023 Latin America Amateur Championship winner he made three major championship starts last season and finished 16th in the PGA TOUR University Rankings. Making four PGA TOUR Canada starts late last season, with a tie for sixth as his best finish, he has gotten familiar with the competition he will be facing this year.

Devon Bling

The runner-up at the 2018 U.S. Amateur Golf Championship, where he lost the 36-hole final to Viktor Hovland (6&5), Bling played the 2019 Masters and the 2019 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, as a 19-year-old. Following a strong amateur career at UCLA, he turned pro in 2022. As a PGA TOUR Canada member, he came close to victory last season, losing a playoff at the Commissionaires Ottawa Open and tying for second at the Windsor Championship. He only missed one cut in nine starts and had a scoring average of 68.32 on his way to a 10th-place finish in the 2023 Fortinet Cup Standings.

Marcos Montenegro

He broke through to win the 2023 Diners Club Peru Open last season on PGA TOUR Latinoamérica. That win, his first as a pro, pushed him to a 10th-place finish on the season-ending Points List. The 26-year-old from Loberia, Argentina, is poised to return to the Korn Ferry Tour, where he spent one full season in 2022.

Following a 17th-place finish in the PGA TOUR University Rankings, Carr had a consistent 2023 season on PGA TOUR Canada. He made the cut in six of his seven starts with a tie for sixth at the Osprey Valley Open as his best finish. He went on to secure his 2024 PGA TOUR Americas card as No. 57 in the Fortinet Cup Standings. The 23-year-old Georgia Southern University alum was the runner-up at the 2022 U.S. Amateur — losing the 36-hole final match to Sam Bennett — earning him major championship starts at the 2023 Masters and the U.S. Open.

José de Jesús Rodríguez

The oldest player to make this list at 43, Rodríguez remains a force in Latin America. As a 2018 Korn Ferry Tour winner, he achieved a lifelong dream of playing on the PGA TOUR in 2018-19. Besides competing on the Korn Ferry Tour, between 2022 and 2023 he won two PGA TOUR Latinoamérica events to become the Tour’s winningest player with six tournament titles in only 56 starts. Back in 2011, two years before the Canadian Tour became PGA TOUR Canada, he ventured into Canadian soil to claim Player of the Year honors with two wins and a runner-up finish.

Stuart Macdonald

A tie for 24th at the PGA TOUR’s Mexico Open at Vidanta, an event he entered as a Monday qualifier four weeks ago, proves he is ready to have another strong year. Playing 14 events, eight on PGA TOUR Latinoamérica and six on PGA TOUR Canada, this 29-year-old from Vancouver had an impact across both Tours in 2023. He collected a victory at the Commissionaires Ottawa Open, a tie for second at the Windsor Championship, and a solo third at the Colombia Classic. While finishing the season ranked seventh in Canada and 20th in Latin America, he also produced the lowest round of the season on both Tours and had a combined scoring average of 68.95 in 54 rounds played.

Isidro Benítez

A PGA TOUR Latinoamérica champion at age 19, when he claimed the 2018 Visa Argentina Open, Benítez is still quite young and hungry for success. He earned his PGA TOUR Americas card following a lackluster season that saw him finish 47th on the Latin America Points List. Working hard to get back on track and compete at this new stage, the 25-year-old lefty worked hard over the past few months and showed progress while making his first PGA TOUR cut at the 2023 World Wide Technology Championship and tying for 11th at the Korn Ferry Tour’s 2024 Panama Championship.

Sandy Scott

Making his professional debut last season on PGA TOUR Latinoamérica, this 25-year-old from Nairn, Scotland, finished 14th in the Points List with a trio of top 6 finishes in 12 starts. A two-time All-American at Texas Tech, Scott posted a 2-1-1 record as a member of the Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup team in 2019. Both his victories came in singles play, defeating Andy Ogletree, 1-up, and Brandon Wu, 4 and 3, at Royal Liverpool Golf Club.

Julián Etulain

At the age of 35, this Argentine veteran is back on the drawing board. A former Korn Ferry Tour champion and a four-time winner on PGA TOUR Latinoamérica, Etulain carries the experience of 290 starts on PGA TOUR-sanctioned Tours. He was a PGA TOUR member for two full seasons (2016-17 and 2018-19), making 50 starts at the highest level. After finishing the PGA TOUR Latinoamérica season ranked 19th, he turned two starts on PGA TOUR Canada into a 64th-place finish in the Fortinet Cup Standings.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

‘Frozen in time’: Kamala Harris tours blood-stained building where 2018 Parkland massacre happened

Vice President Harris speaks to the media after she and the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention met with families

Vice President Kamala Harris toured the blood-stained classroom building where the 2018 Parkland high school massacre happened, then announced a program to assist states that have laws allowing police to temporarily seize guns from people judges have found to be dangerous.

Harris saw bullet-pocked walls and floors still covered in dried blood and broken glass left behind from the Feb. 14, 2018, attack at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that killed 14 students and three staff members and wounded 17 people.

The halls and classrooms inside the three-story structure remain strewn with shoes left behind by fleeing students as well as wilted Valentine’s Day flowers and balloons. Textbooks, laptop computers, snacks and papers remain on desks.

Harris was told about each victim who died.

“Frozen in time,” Harris said repeatedly during the tour. She was accompanied by victims’ family members, some of them pushing for more spending on school safety and others for stronger gun laws.

Harris, who leads the new White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, said there are lessons to be learned from Parkland, both for stopping school shootings before they happen and mitigating them with measures such as making sure classroom doors don’t lock from the outside as they did at Stoneman Douglas. She pointed out that shootings are a leading cause of death for children and teenagers.

“We must be willing to have the courage to say that on every level, whether you talk about changing laws or changing practices and protocols, that we must do better,” Harris said.

World & Nation

Must Reads: A year after the Parkland massacre, two fathers are divided on guns but united by pain

Andrew Pollack had just settled into a folding chair in a palm-shaded campground when gunfire rang out from a nearby target range.

Feb. 13, 2019

At Stoneman Douglas, former student Nikolas Cruz , then 19, fired about 140 shots from his AR-15-style semiautomatic rifle during his six-minute attack, moving methodically from the first floor, through the second and on to the third.

He pleaded guilty in 2021 . He was sentenced to life in prison in 2022 after his jury couldn’t unanimously agree he deserved a death sentence, angering the victims’ families.

The building was preserved so his jury could tour it. It has loomed over the 3,600-student school from behind a temporary fence since the school reopened two weeks after the shooting. It is scheduled to be demolished this summer. No replacement plan has been announced.

After Harris’ tour, she announced a $750-million grant program to provide technical assistance and training to Florida and the other 20 states that have similar “red flag laws.”

Florida’s law allows police officers, with a judge’s permission, to temporarily seize guns belonging to anyone shown to be a danger to others or themselves. The statute has been used more than 12,000 times since it was enacted six years ago in response to the Parkland shooting.

Harris also called on both Congress and states without red flag laws to adopt them. The Biden administration has called for a national red flag law.

Cruz had a long history of troubling and bizarre behavior, including animal torture. In the weeks before the shooting, he had been reported to local law enforcement and the FBI by people fearing he was planning a mass shooting, but no action was taken. He legally purchased 10 guns in the 17 months between his 18th birthday and the massacre.

“Red flag laws are simply designed to give communities a vehicle through which they can share ... information about the concern of potential danger or the crying out for help,” Harris said.

Sen. Rick Scott, a Republican who signed Florida’s law as governor in 2018 shortly after the Parkland shooting, issued a statement Saturday calling the Biden administration’s proposed national red flag law “radical,” saying it would be modeled on California’s law and strip gun owners of their rights. California’s law is broader than Florida’s as it allows family members, employers and others to initiate the process, but the removal also has to be approved by a judge.

California’s law “abandons due process to more quickly and easily take constitutional rights away from law-abiding Americans. That is unacceptable,” Scott said.

Harris’ tour was the latest by elected officials and law enforcement and education leaders in recent months. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona toured the building in January and several members of Congress, mostly Democrats, have gone through since law enforcement returned custody of the building to the school district last summer. FBI Director Christopher Wray and Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle visited the building in recent days.

“It is important to bring these people through the building so they can see not only the horror that still exists there, but so that we can point to the exact things that failed,” said Tony Montalto, president of Stand With Parkland, the group that represents most of the victims’ families. His 14-year-old daughter, Gina, died in the shooting.

Some Stoneman Douglas families who participate in the tours want the sale of AR-15s and similar guns banned, as they were from 1994 to 2004, as do Harris and President Biden, but there isn’t sufficient support in Congress. Opponents, which include other victims’ families, argue that such a ban would violate the 2nd Amendment and do little to stem gun violence.

Kamala Harris, in San Francisco, outlines ‘profound’ stakes of election, raises her own profile

Vice President Kamala Harris returned to San Francisco to collect some campaign cash and make the case for democracy being at stake in the 2024 election.

Linda Beigel Schulman said the tour showed Harris the carnage a mass shooting creates — it no longer will be an abstract concept. Beigel Schulman’s 35-year-old son, geography teacher Scott Beigel, was killed as he ushered students to safety in his classroom. The papers he was grading when the shooting began remain on his desk.

“She understands how important gun violence prevention is for us,” Beigel Schulman said of the vice president. “But when you go into the actual building and see what actually happened, it doesn’t matter that it is six years later, it really does something to you.”

Max Schachter, whose son Alex died in the shooting, uses the tours to persuade officials to enact school safety measures such as making doors and windows bullet-resistant. Alex, 14, died from shots fired through the window of his classroom’s door.

Schachter said while there is disagreement over gun laws, school safety brings the sides together. He pointed particularly to a fall visit by Utah officials leading to that state enacting a $100-million plan to harden its schools.

“I couldn’t save Alex, but every time I have officials come through that building, lives are saved,” Schachter said.
