  • The island of Comino takes its name from the plant that grows there in abundance in spring: cumin .
  • It’s only 3.496 km² and has 3 year-round inhabitants.
  • Comino is only accessible by boat. Cars are not allowed as the area is protected and classified as a nature reserve.

How to get to Comino and the Blue Lagoon?

As Comino is located between the island of Malta and the island of Gozo , shuttle boats and boat trips are offered from these 2 islands.

Here are all the options you have to get to Comino from Malta and Gozo:

Getting to Comino Blue Lagoon from Malta

From Malta , you can go to Comino by boat from several towns: Valletta , Buggiba/ St Paul’s Bay , as well as from Cirkewwa and Marfa , in the North of Malta.

There are 9 different ways to go to Comino:

  • Day trip to Comino Blue Lagoon
  • Catamaran boat trip to the Blue Lagoon and other bays
  • Sailboat day trip to Comino (3 islands)
  • Private boat trip to Comino (3h) or Full Day
  • Private sailboat trip to Comino Blue Lagoon
  • Day trip to Comino Blue Lagoon + Gozo
  • Evening trip to Comino “Swim, Drink Dance” (Adults only)
  • Comino shuttle boat from the North of Malta
  • Renting a boat to visit the Blue Lagoon

I will now detail each option , so you can choose the one that will suit you the best!

This boat trip is the most classic way to go to Comino and the Blue lagoon .

The boat departs daily from St Paul’s Bay , a town in the northwest of Malta , 15 km from the capital Valletta.

The great thing about this tour is that they can organize pickup/drop-off from hotels in Malta.

So if you don’t have a car, you can contact the company after booking and they will organize the transport for an extra fee. In any case, that will be much cheaper than a taxi!

So even if you haven’t hired a car for your itinerary in Malta , you can still enjoy the beautiful island of Comino.

Once on the boat, you will start to navigate along the North coast of Malta before reaching the first stop of the day: the Crystal Lagoon . A bit less known than the Blue Lagoon, Comino’s other lagoon is just as nice to have a swim!

Surrounded by high cliffs and with translucent water , the place is super beautiful and can only be reached by boat. You will spend around 1 hour there to swim and snorkel .

The boat then goes to the famous Blue Lagoon of Comino, where you will have the chance to spend the rest of the day swimming (and taking pictures of the crystal clear water!).

During the day, you will also be able to enjoy all the facilities of the boat: slides, deck chairs , underwater vision for fish watching, showers, toilets .

And of course, you can take a walk around Comino if you feel like it. I will tell you more about the things to do in Comino a bit further down the article.

On the way back , you will pass by Santa Maria cave (used by pirates to hide their booty!) and the other sea caves of Comino.

To book this boat trip to Comino from Malta , you simply need to click on the button below:

Remember to bring everything you need for the day: towels, sun cream, hat . There is no shade at all on Comino and it’s very hot in summer!

Comino blue lagoon

To go to the Blue Lagoon, you can also opt for a Catamaran day trip.

Just like for the “classic” day trip to Comino I mentioned above, the boat will depart from St Paul’s Bay and you can opt for the hotel pickup option (after booking) if you don’t have a car.

During the day, you will go to the best swimming and snorkeling locations of Malta, including Comino Blue Lagoon and Crystal Lagoon of course!

The destination you will go to will depend on the weather and sea conditions: the captain will make sure you will be at the right place at the right time.

In addition to the Blue Lagoon, other possible swimming destinations include:

  • Ghajn Tuffieha bay in Malta and sail close to Popeye Village
  • Mellieha bay in Malta
  • Ramla bay in Gozo

For lunch, you can opt for the traditionnal BBQ they are making and serving on board (it needs to be booked directly on site). It’s delicious!

No doubt you will love your day at sea on the world’s largest day passenger sailing Catamaran. 😊

To book your catamaran trip to the Blue Lagoon and other bays, you simply need to click on the button below:

Blue Lagoon Catamaran

Third option to visit the beautiful Blue Lagoon of Comino (as well as other Maltese bays!) is to opt for the famous Sailboat “3 islands” day trip.

What’s amazing about this trip is that you will sail on a beautiful wooden Turkish Gullet , and everything is included:

Hotel pickup and drop-off, lunch (including wine!) and snorkeling equipment.

During this fantastic day at sea, you will discover:

  • Paradise Bay (North of Malta)
  • The Crystal Lagoon in Comino
  • The Blue Lagoon indeed!
  • Comino’s sea caves , including Santa Maria’s cave
  • Armier Bay (North of Malta)

A great itinerary for a 1 day boat trip!

To book it, you simply need to click on the button below:

Blue Lagoon

You want to discover more than just Comino?

You don’t want to be with the other tourists?

Then this private boat trip to Comino and Gozo is made for you!

During 3h, you and your group (up to 6 people) will discover the southern coast of Gozo as well as Comino : the sea caves, the Crystal Lagoon and the Blue Lagoon indeed!

Josef, your skipper, will show you the best places to swim far from other tourists and tell you interesting anecdotes about Gozo and Comino.

In addition, the snorkeling equipment is included.

The tour will start from Gozo Harbor (next to the ferry) or Northern Malta: Marfa (Riviera Hotel) or Cirkewwa (Paradise Hotel).

And as it’s a private tour, you can decide of the starting time with Josef.

You will also be able to decide of the route, how long you want to stop for a swim and more! It’s your tour , and everything can be customized according to your wishes.

To book your half day boat tour to Comino and Gozo, simply click on the button below:

You think half a day at sea isn’t enough?

Well, it’s also possible to book a full day VIP private boat trip (6h) to Comino Blue Lagoon and Gozo!

In this case, you will discover the best of Southern Gozo and go all around Comino . It’s the only way to get a good grasp of both islands from the sea in a day.

It’s what I did during my trip to Malta and it was one of the best day I had in my life! (along with the Gozo VIP quad bike tour I talk about here: how to visit Gozo by quad bike? )

You need to book your full day private boat trip to Comino Blue Lagoon and Gozo here:

Blue Lagoon Malta

Another amazing way to discover Comino, the Blue Lagoon and even more Maltese bays is to opt for a full day VIP private sailboat tour!

Just like for the other private boat trip I mentioned above, the boat will be only for your group . This means that you can go wherever you want and spend as much time as you please at a given location!

Another great thing is that this boat trip to Comino Blue Lagoon starts from Valletta . This will allow you to discover the Grand Harbor from the sea!

I won’t tell it enough, but for me, this kind of private boat trips are the best way to make the most of your day at sea.

To book your private sailboat trip to Comino Blue Lagoon and other Maltese bays, simply click on the button below:

croisiere catamaran Santorin

You’re in Malta only for a few days and don’t want to spend too much time in Comino to be able to visit other places too?

Well, this day trip to Comino Blue Lagoon + Gozo is made for you!

Just like the full day trip to Comino Blue Lagoon I mentioned above, the tour will start from St Paul’s Bay.

During this tour, you will spend 1h at Comino Blue Lagoon in the morning.

You will then head to Gozo, where you will have 3 hours of free time to visit the island . As you will not have a car, you will be able to take the bus or opt for one of the transport the boat company will offer you (for an extra fee).

The various transportation options they offer are a great way to see as much as possible during these 3 hours in Gozo. It’s also very convenient as it will take you back to your starting point to catch the boat back to Malta .

During high season, the boat will then make one last stop at the Crystal Lagoon, where you can enjoy 1h of snorkeling.

To book your boat trip to Comino + Gozo, it’s super simple, you just have to click on the button below:

If you want to visit Gozo and Comino in a day , there is another version of this trip that includes:

  • Free pick up and drop off from several towns in Malta: Valletta, Gzira, Sliema, Buggiba, Mellieha…
  • 3h tour of Gozo by Jeep
  • 3h boat trip around Comino and the caves with swimming stops at the Blue Lagoon and Crystal Lagoon.

It needs to be booked here:

gozo Mgarr Ferry

The Swim, Drink, Dance evening boat trip to Comino Blue Lagoon is very different than the other day trips I mentioned above, for 3 reasons:

  • It’s an “adults only” boat trip
  • You’re going to the Blue Lagoon in the evening , so you will avoid the crowd (and the sunburns 😋)
  • It’s more a “lounge bar/dance” kind of excursion, so if you want to meet new people, it’s a great choice!

To book your evening at the blue Lagoon, it’s here:

To reach Comino Blue Lagoon, your last option is to take a shuttle boat from the North of Malta or from Gozo.

Please note that this is a taxi boat (not a ferry) with room for only 20 people and no cars/scooters/bikes. Motor vehicles are anyway no allowed on Comino.

These shuttles depart from Cirkewwa and Marfa , 2 places located in the very north of Malta and only 2 km apart.

Cirkewwa is also Gozo ferry’s departure point (you can take it with your rental car, no problem!).

That’s why some people get confused and think it’s possible to take the ferry from Cirkewwa to Comino. But it’s not the same thing, the ferry only goes to Gozo.

Marfa , on the other hand, is a small bay located in front of the Labranda Riviere & Spa Hotel .

The taxi boat ride to Comino from the North of Malta takes around 15 minutes.

To book your shuttle boat to Comino Blue Lagoon from Nothern Malta (Cirkewwa or Marfa – same price), you simply have to click on the button below:

And if you prefer to take a shuttle boat from Gozo to the Blue lagoon:

  • The shuttle boat will depart from Gozo harbor , just in front of the ferry
  • The boat ride to the blue Lagoon will take around 10 minutes.

You will need to book your taxi boat from Gozo to Comino Blue Lagoon there:

No matter where you depart from, the price always include the return trip.

There are boats all day long in summer, so you can choose a departure time that suits you. For the return, same thing, just get in the boat to leave Comino when you will want!

During winter, the company will contact you to arrange a boat at a convenient time for everyone.

If you are driving to Cirkewwa and Marfa , you can park in one of the nearby car parks .

You can also go to Cirkewwa by bus from the Malta’s main cities (Mellieha/ Buggiba/ St’Paul’s Bay/ Sliema/ Valletta). There is also a bus stop 200 meters from Marfa.

To check the bus timetable and plan your journey, you should visit Malta Public Transport official website or download “Tallinja” app.

Blue Lagoon beach Malta

If you have the boat license, you have another option to go to Comino Blue Lagoon: renting a boat!

It’s a great choice if you want to visit Comino with your family and friends.

If you want to rent a boat for a nice day at sea during your trip to Malta, you should book it with Samboat.

Motorboats, sailboats, yachts, small boats without a license, with or without a skipper: they simply have the most complete offer for boat rental!

So, what are you waiting for to book your sea trip in Malta? 😊

How to go to Comino from Gozo

If you prefer to go to Comino from Gozo (instead of from Malta), you also have several options.

  • Private boat trip to Comino Blue Lagoon from Gozo
  • Shuttle boat to Comino from Mgarr harbor

As I have mentioned above, in “4. Private boat trip to Comino Blue Lagoon and Gozo” Josef’s private boat trip going to the Blue Lagoon can also departs from Gozo!

In that case, you will start your boat trip from Mgarr Harbor, where Gozo ferry arrives.

He offers 2 different boat trips (click on the orange links to book):

  • 3h private boat trip to Comino and Southern Gozo
  • Full Day private boat trip to Comino and Southern Gozo (my personal choice!)

Simply choose the duration you want and enjoy a perfect day at sea with Josef!

Gozo from above

Your 2nd option to go to Comino from Gozo is to take the shuttle boat from Mgarr harbor.

They are located just in front of the ferry departure , it’s very easy!

Your shuttle boat to Comino Blue Lagoon tickets need to be purchased in advance by clicking here:

The 6 best things to do in Comino

Now that you know how to get to Comino from Malta or Gozo, here is my list of the best things to do on this small island.

You already know it: the Blue Lagoon is the most famous tourist attraction of Comino.

This splendid lagoon with turquoise water is actually the reason why most people are going to Comino during their trip to Malta.

It’s simply the most beautiful place in Malta to have swim!

When you will arrive in Comino, you can’t miss it: all boats arrive directly at the Blue Lagoon.

Opposite the Blue Lagoon, you can also swim to the small island of Cominotto.

If you took a boat tour to go to Comino, you can enjoy the sun on the deck of the boat after a swim in the Blue Lagoon.

However, if you took the taxi boat, you may want to rent deckchairs or sit on the rocks overlooking the lagoon.

In any case, try to arrive early in the morning if you want to get a sunbed or to find a good spot, as it quickly gets crowded after 10 am.

If you have any valuables you don’t want to let on the beach when you go swimming, you can put them in the lockers located next to the boat pier.

Comino Blue Lagoon

The Crystal Lagoon is the other lagoon of Comino.

Reachable only by boat , it’s quieter than the Blue Lagoon. It’s also known to be one of the best places in Malta to do snorkeling.

And if you’re up for an adrenaline rush , you can try cliff jumping from one of the few spots around the Lagoon. (Always make sure the water is deep enough first!)

On Comino, you can also go to 2 other nice beaches , much less frequented than the Blue Lagoon:

  • Santa Maria Beach, a sandy beach with crystal clear water located 20 minutes walk from the Blue Lagoon. Deckchairs and parasols can be rented + There is a food kiosk
  • San Niklaw beach , a very small (but nice!) beach.

Plage Santa Marijia Comino

If you don’t like to spend the whole day in the water or get bored quickly at the beach, you should go for a hike around Comino!

This 3 hour walk is the best way to admire the landscape and enjoy a quiet moment, far from the other tourists.

You should walk around the island in an anti-clockwise direction , first heading to Saint Mary’s tower.

You can climb to the top of this former 17th century watchtower and enjoy an amazing 360° view over Comino, Malta and Gozo .

To get inside the tower, you will be asked to make a small donation (1 or 2 euros per person). Quick tip : You can only visit the tower if the flag is raised, it means it’s open to visitors.

After your visit, continue your walk to St Mary’s Battery. Built in 1715 to protect Malta, it houses 6 cannons.

From the battery you can take the path that goes directly to Santa Maria beach or opt for the slightly longer version of the hike by walking along the cliffs first (there is no real path along the cliffs, so you need to wear good shoes!).

From Santa Maria beach, it will then take about 20 minutes to get back to your starting point: the Blue Lagoon.

Bring trainers if you want to visit Comino on foot, as the paths are quite rough.

In summer especially, remember to bring water with you for the hike as you won’t be able to buy some before reaching Santa Maria bay.

Comino Malta

You might not know it, but Comino is also an amazing place to go diving!

With warm and super clear water, it’s the perfect place to discover the underwater world and see the corals and fishes.

The Crystal Lagoon, Santa Maria Cave or the Cominotto Reef are some of the best diving spots.

At the foot of Santa Maria tower, you can also dive to see the P31 wreck , a patrol boat used by the armed forces and now lying 20 metres underwater .

To dive in Comino, you will need to be an experienced diver (first dives aren’t organized there) and book your dive in advance by clicking on the button below:

Scuba diving Malta

Swimming in the Blue Lagoon, snorkeling and hiking around the island are really the 3 main activities to do in Comino.

But if you want more, from the boat pier, you can also go for a towed buoy tour, rent kayaks or rent jet skis.

There are no restaurants on Comino, but you will find food trucks selling sandwiches, burgers, chips and cold drinks.

It will for sure not be the best lunch of your life, but the prices are quite fair, especially considering the fact that there is no competition.

And if you want to be totally trendy, there is one thing you must do in Comino: drink a cocktail served in a pineapple!

You can choose between pina colada, mojito…or Blue Lagoon! With or without alcohol.

Don’t forget to take a picture of your pineapple cocktail with the turquoise colour of the Blue Lagoon in the background 😉.

The best things to do around Comino

Comino is located between Malta and Gozo and is only visited on a day trip.

So after visitng Comino and the Blue Lagoon, you’ll have plenty of time to explore the other 2 islands during your stay.

Here is my selection of the best things to do in Malta:

  • Valletta, the capital. The city is famous for its traditional architecture and its cathedral, the co-cathedral of St. John, featuring numerous gold-plated decorations.
  • The Three Cities, 3 cities located opposite Valletta, offering superb views over the Grand Harbor
  • Mdina: the ancient capital of Malta, very charming and picturesque
  • The Blue Grotto (not to be confused with the Blue Lagoon!): a sea cave with deep blue water. You can admire it from the viewpoint or opt for a short boat trip.

Where to stay when visiting Comino?

If you were planning to spend a holiday in Comino , this is unfortunately no longer possible.

The only hotel in Comino has recently closed for renovation .

As it will probably be destroyed and completely rebuilt, it’s not yet known when it will reopen.

There is however a campsite in Comino , but it’s just a place to put your tent, there is absoluetly no amenities.

This means that you will have to bring all your equipment (tent, stove etc…) if you want to camp in Comino. Not very convenient!

So you will have to stay in Malta or Gozo to go to Comino.

Here is my selection of the best hotels in Malta and Gozo depending on your budget , organized by city.

If you want a hotel in the south of Malta , you should stay around Valletta:

Our favorite in Gozo, you should book it really in advance!

To book your stay at The Holiday Hub, simply click the button below:

Holiday Hub Gozo

You can go to Comino all year round .

However, as you are going there by boat, the trips might be canceled due to weather conditions.

It’s hopefully rather uncommon, especially during summer!

During the low season (between November and April) there are fewer departures.

In summer, between June and early September, it gets crowded quickly at the Blue Lagoon.

So your best bet is to opt for a private boat trip that will allow you to visit the Blue Lagoon in the late afternoon ( click here to book the 3h version  and there for the full day.)

In my opinion, the best time to go to Comino if you want to swim is end of May-early June and September-October . The water is quite warm and it’s less crowded.

For hiking , you should ideally go to Comino at end of March/April: it’s greener and the temperature is perfect for a walk!

Comino Blue Lagoon

Comino is a beautiful island sitting between Malta and Gozo. It is renowned for its crystal clear waters, hence the name of its most famous bay – the Blue Lagoon.

The Blue Lagoon is also referred to as the Crystal Lagoon due to its crystal clear light blue waters.

Apart from Comino Hotel, there is only one single family living permanently on the island. Comino has become a favourite destination for tourists from all over the world, particularly cherished for its peace and tranquillity.

St Mary’s Tower is the most visible structure on the island. It dates back to 1416, when the Maltese petitioned their King to build a tower on Comino to serve as an early warning system in case of invasion. At the time they wanted to deter marauding Turks, pirates, smugglers and corsairs from using Comino as a hiding place and staging ground for devastating sorties onto the sister islands of Malta and Gozo.

Chaudron Power Boats

Our Power Boats are custom built by the famous Chaudron boat company, a company established in Malta in 1988 which today is the undisputed top boat-building company in Malta. Among the many prestigious awards won by Chaudron is the SuperSport Championship, which it won for three years in a row: in 2007, 2008 and 2009.

Our power-boats are 33 feet long with twin Yamaha 300hp engines and can take over 20 people. Safety is our top priority, and our boats are built with all necessary safety measures to ensure a smooth and safe boating experience.

Chaudron started competing in the Powerboat P1 championship in 2004 with the debut race in home seas.

Chaudron were allowed to compete after being given a wildcard and after the experience the team planned on entering the SuperSport championship with the main aim of securing the world title – an ambition achieved in 2007 and 2008.

The only issue with these ferries is some of the operators depart only from Malta island, go to Comino, and then proceed to take you to Gozo. So, many choose to opt for the Comino Gozo ferry. But if that’s not what you are looking for, then you will have to ensure you get a ticket for the right ferry in advance.

Remember that the ferry between Gozo and Comino depends on weather conditions. So, if you are travelling during the off-season, then it is recommended to check the weather forecast beforehand.

Refer to the timetable here if required. Ensure you return the same day as the island empties of travellers in the evening unless you’re staying at the only hotel on the island (which is closed temporarily.)

Best time to visit for a Comino trip

The best time to visit Comino largely depends on the activities you are aiming for.

If you are visiting Comino only for the Blue Lagoon, then the peak tourist season of summer from July to August is for you.

But that also means having to deal with the crowd. You can either consider planning your Gozo Comino tour either early in the morning, preferably around 8 am, or late in the afternoon when most of the boats depart from Comino.

Even though Blue Lagoon is not a sunset spot, you will still find it spectacular in the evening.

If this is not possible, then you can think about the weekday ferry to Comino when Blue Lagoon sees lesser tourists as compared to weekends.

If you are on Comino for hiking and outdoor activities, then the months of May and October are ideal for you.

Malta is one of the warm places in Europe in October even during the winter months. The early winter sun makes for a pleasant day where you can go from Gozo to Comino for an entire day.

Is it worth travelling from Gozo to Comino on your Malta trip?

Honestly?  It depends on what your interests are and how much tolerance you have for the touristy crowds.

If you are visiting Comino only for Blue Lagoon and that too during the peak tourist season, then you will have to put up with the crowded beach.

If you are adding Comino to your itinerary for its natural charm and outdoor activities, then it is definitely worth your time.

Away from all the Malta Game of Thrones locations , exploring this small island on foot is a unique experience.

Of course, it limits the months you can visit Comino as summer is usually too hot for walking around a whole day. And winter months mean less Blue Lagoon charm. But all in all, no matter when you take a ferry Gozo to Comino, you will find it a memorable trip.

From Gozo – Comino tours that are highly recommended

With a plethora of tour operators between Gozo and Comino, finding a tour that suits your needs and preferences will be easy. Many tours also cover a few activities on Gozo and then go to Comino for spending a day. Here are the few Gozo to Comino tours that are popular amongst tourists –

Comino: Blue Lagoon, Crystal Lagoon, and Sea caves Tour – the best part of this tour comes with flexible pick-up and drop-off spots. Depending on how much time you have, you can either opt for a 7-hour tour or go for a 4.5-hour tour. Keep in mind that Crystal Lagoon is covered only from June to October and it depends on the weather conditions. This Gozo Comino blue lagoon and caves tour is likely to sell out. So, book your tickets in advance.

Apart from the ones mentioned above, you can also find different tours while wandering around Gozo. The only drawback is almost all the best-selling tours fill out fast and you may find spots available only for less-popular tours.

Places to stay on Comino

Now, this is the tricky part when it comes to staying on Comino. There is only one hotel on the entire island of Comino and only 2 people actually stay on the island.

No homestays, no service apartments, nothing! So, if you are willing to spend a night on Comino, you will have to book your room way in advance.

The Comino Hotel & Suites is located overlooking the crystal clear water of San Niklaw Bay.

This 4-star property ensures you get everything under one roof. They have their own ferry service to Malta and Gozo which proves useful for arranging airport transfers.

The hotel staff will also help in arranging night cavern diving, diving, and snorkelling if you are interested in water sports.

The only problem is this hotel may not be operational during the off-season. You may find it closed from November to April, though the dates are not mentioned on the official site of the property.

It is recommended to call the property directly before finalizing your trip plan for the Comino tour. Because if The Comino Hotel & Suits is closed, you will not have any other place to spend the night and you will have to go back to Gozo.

Impromptu plans are strictly off-limits when it comes to staying on Comino.

Camping on Comino Island

If you are not the one for luxurious stays and spa retreats, then Comino may work out perfectly for you.

Camping on Comino is allowed, but only on the dedicated Tal Ful camping site as the island is a protected nature reserve.

You can use the toilets and showers around Blue Lagoon when staying here, but they are a little away from the campsite.

Keep in mind that this is not exactly a popular choice and the site is not always well-kept. Carry insect repellants, follow guidelines, and do not leave any garbage behind after you are done camping on Comino.

Where to eat on Comino?

Again, this is a tricky part when it comes to Comino travel.

As it is a small island with only one restaurant of The Comino Hotel and a few food kiosks around Blue Lagoon and San Niklaw Bay, you can expect only basic food items on Comino.

And that too, if the weather conditions are favourable for setting up kiosks and if the hotel is not closed during the off-season. The prices are usually higher and options are limited.

One way to handle this is to pack as much food as you can before travelling from Gozo to Comino. But whatever you do, do not forget to buy that refreshing pineapple drink, and do not forget to click photos for your Gram!

Things to see on your Comino trip

Blue lagoon.

Of course, the list must start with the most popular Blue Lagoon which has rightfully earned its place in the Maltese tourism industry.

With its turquoise water and sandy beach, the lagoon attracts thousands of tourists during the peak season. And that makes it extremely crowded during the day.

You can plan your ferry to Comino early morning or late afternoon and you will be able to avoid some of the crowd. But if you are taking a boat trip to Comino, then you will have to stick to the timimgs.

Do not let other travellers stop you from visiting this stunning cove on Comino for it will be the highlight of your trip.

The water here is great for swimming and snorkeling with plenty of marine life around. A perfect excuse to go underwater and away from everyone! All details can be found here for the Blue Lagoon Malta .

Crystal Lagoon

Crystal Lagoon stands true to its name with crystal clear water with limestone cliffs protecting it from many travellers.

As beautiful as Blue Lagoon and still a lesser-known place on Comino, visiting Crystal Lagoon will take you away from all the touristy hustle and bustle.

You can reach this by only boat and you will have to opt for tours that include this in their itinerary . If time permits, definitely add Crystal Lagoon to your trip to Comino.

Tunnel Cave

Comino has some interesting cave structures along its coastline and you will be surprised by how beautiful these structures are.

With different caves to explore, Tunnel Cave gathers more visitors as it is a natural tunnel connecting Blue Lagoon and Crystal Lagoon.

You can either rent a kayak or go swimming. But, keep in mind that currants can be unpredictable and it is not recommended to swim in the caves on Comino if you are not a seasoned underwater explorer.

Lover’s Cave and Popeye Cave are located nearby and are also visited by many. Read more about Malta’s safety flag system for beaches here .

Santa Marija Bay

A perfect alternative to Blue Lagoon, Santa Marija Bay on Comino is all about laid-back vibes.

Opt for sun loungers and catch some tan or go swimming in blue water. You can also take a walk on a white sandy beach, but some people have noticed seaweed during the off-season.

Showers and toilets are available here and you will also find a couple of food kiosks around.

Santa Marija Tower

Address: 284H+QW2, Ghajnsielem, Malta

St. Mary’s Chapel

Situated above Santa Marija Bay, St. Mary’s Chapel may be one of the oldest structures on Comino.

It was first mentioned in 1296 and even though the chapel we see today was built after 1618, it is interesting to visit the place of worship in a faraway corner of the world with so much history to share.

It is a simple building where you stop for some time while wandering around the island.

Santa Marija Tower is also commonly known as Comino Tower. dating back to 1618, this watchtower was in use as recently as 2002.

After that, it was handed over to Din l-Art Helwa and is well-restored today. With so much history to share, this tower is visited by many. It can also be seen from the ferry to Comino.

But keep in mind that you will have to walk to Santa Marija Tower as there are no vehicles on Comino. Even if the tower is closed to the public, you can still climb up a little and get to view an entire island from above.

Santa Marija Battery

Santa Marija Battery on Comino is another historic attraction. Even though it was built by the Order of Saint John in 1716, it is said to be abandoned by 1770.

But, after it was restored twice by Din l-Art Helwa in 1997 and 2004, gun carriages were reinstalled and cannons were mounted.

Even though it is far from being restored to its former glory, one can see the impressive structure it once was. It is open to all throughout the day and entry is free of cost.

Practical details for your trip from Gozo to Comino

If you are visiting Comino on your own and intend to walk around, make sure you are carrying plenty of water. The shade is hard to find and with no vehicles to drive you around, you must keep yourself hydrated.

The same goes for sunscreen. Even if you stick to Blue Lagoon, the chances of renting an umbrella are slim during peak season. And good sunscreen will come in handy when you explore Comino on foot.

If you are interested in mountain biking, then a few areas of Comino will make for a great adventure. You can enquire at the only hotel on this island and they will help you with arranging the necessary gear.

Make sure you are wearing a sturdy pair of shoes as the island is rocky and uneven in many parts. You will need comfortable footwear if you decide to go on a small hike or simply walk around a bit.

Go for scuba diving and snorkelling during your Comino trip. But avoid cliff jumping and swimming near caves. It may not look risky, but Comino witnesses cliff-jumping gone wrong every year. Stick to the designated swimming zones as well.

It is surprising that a small island like Comino is packed with so much history, natural beauty, and interesting sights to explore, isn’t it?

All you have to do is hop on a ferry to Comino and get ready to spend a day (or even night) on Comino soaking in everything it has to offer.

Moscow is the financial and political centre of Russia and the countries formerly comprising the Soviet Union. It has a population of around 13 million and an area of 2,511 square kilometres (970 sq mi) after an expansion in 2012. One-tenth of all Russian citizens live in the Moscow metropolitan area. Moscow is the second most populous city in Europe, after Istanbul . Moscow is in the UTC+3 time zone; there is no daylight saving time.

Many years since the break up of the Soviet Union, the economy has improved, and the modern era has brought upon a wide variety of construction projects, modern architecture and newer transport systems replacing the derelict ones during Soviet times.

Geography [ edit ]

Moscow is a large metropolis on the Moskva River, which bends its way through the city. The historical center is on the northern bank of the river. The other major waterway is the Yauza River, which flows into the Moskva east of the Kremlin.

Much of Moscow's geography is defined by the 3 'Ring Roads' that circle the city at various distances from the centre, roughly following the outline of the walls that used to surround Moscow. With Red Square and the Kremlin forming the very centre, the innermost ring road is the Boulevard Ring ( Bulvarnoye Koltso ), built in the 1820s where the 16th century walls used to be. It runs from the Christ the Savior Cathedral in south-west central Moscow, to the mouth of the Yauza in south-east central Moscow.

The next ring road, the Garden Ring ( Sadovoe Koltso ), derives its name from the fact that landowners near the road in Tsarist times were obligated to maintain gardens to make the road attractive. In Soviet times, the road was widened, and there are now no gardens there.

The Third Ring Road, completed in 2004, is not much use for tourists but is a heavily used motorway which absorbs a bit of Moscow's traffic. It roughly follows the outline of Kamer-Kollezhsky val , the customs boundary of Moscow in the 18th – early 20th century. The outer edge of Moscow is largely defined by the Moscow Ring Road (widely known by its abbreviation: MKAD-Moskovskaya kolcevaya avto doroga), a motorway which is 108 km (67 mi) long and encircles the entire city (similar to London's M25 and Paris' Périphérique ).

Climate [ edit ]

The climate of Moscow features warm summers and long, cold winters.

Get in [ edit ]

See Russia#Get in for visa requirements to Russia.

By train [ edit ]

boat trip comino

Moscow is a railway hub, with connections to all parts of Russia and far into Europe and Asia. Due to its hub status, Moscow's train stations are often crowded; trains are the usual form of intercity transport for most Russians. The stations have a reputation for being unsafe but paradoxically the threat of terrorism has improved things: security gates, policing and surveillance deter the casual thugs and villains. Guard your valuables and yourself as you would in any big city.

All long-distance trains are operated by Russian Railways and its subsidiaries, except for a few international trains with other operators. Tickets can be bought at stations or online . For domestic trains, you can show the ticket officer your online boarding pass; however, international trains require a printed ticket. There are usually ticket counters with English-speaking personnel - they may be marked as such, or the clerk may direct you to another counter if they can't cope with your English. See Russia#By train 2 for more details on travelling in Russia by train.

From Europe [ edit ]

All trains from Europe halted since 2020

Train stations in Moscow [ edit ]

Moscow has 10 train stations, 9 of which are near metro stations close to the center of Moscow. Be sure to note the station from which your train is departing, which will be indicated on the ticket, or online . Three stations ( Leningradsky , Yaroslavsky , and Kazansky ) are on one huge square, informally known as the "Three Stations' Square". A running joke among Moscow taxi drivers since the Soviet times is to be able to pick up a fare from one of them to the other, taking the unwary tourist on an elaborate ride in circles. Be prepared for enormous queues trying to enter or exit the Metro at peak times, as people are getting off or on the commuter trains.

By car [ edit ]

Many entry points to Moscow over the Ring Road and into the city feature rotating roadblocks, where teams of traffic police may stop a vehicle, especially if it is not featuring Moscow plates. You may be stopped and questioned but you'll be allowed to proceed if you have all the proper documents.

Foreign cars, especially expensive cars, might attract unwelcome attention, and there is cumbersome paperwork involved to enter Russia by car.

By boat [ edit ]

There is no scheduled passenger service to Moscow by boat; however, cruise ships do provide service to the Northern River Terminal, on the Moscow Canal near the Khimki Reservoir. The pier is not convenient to the city and it can take over 2 hours to reach the city centre by car.

A system of navigable channels and locks connects the Moskva River with the Volga River, which is further connected to the Baltic Sea , White Sea, the Azov, the Black Sea, and the Caspian Sea. In the Soviet times this allowed the official propaganda to refer to Moscow as "a port on the five seas".

By bicycle [ edit ]

Moscow is the easternmost destination of the EuroVelo cycling routes . Eurovelo Route 2 , the Capitals Route, is a 5,500 km (3,400 mi) route starting in Galway , Ireland , passing through Dublin , London , Berlin , Warsaw and Minsk before terminating in Moscow.

By metro [ edit ]

boat trip comino

The Metro is open from 05:30-01:00. Station entrances are closed at 01:00, and at this time the last trains depart from all of the termini stations. After 01:00, many locals will enter the train station using the exits, which are still open. Service on the ring line runs until 01:30, although entrances are closed at 01:00. The down escalators are also shut off at 01:00.

There is signage in the Metro stations in English and the Latin alphabet, but these signs are not everywhere. Each train carriage has a map in Latin script and there is one near the entrance to each station. Note the direction of the train before you alight. It is worth printing a map of the metro system in both Cyrillic and Latin letters to take with you.

All trains in the system have free WiFi onboard, but you will need to have a Russian phone number to get the authorization code to access the WiFi. Some of the older train cars are not climate controlled.

2 or 3 stations may be connected as transfer points but will each have a different name. There are 2 stations called Smolenskaya and 2 stations called Arbatskaya , but the station pairs are not connected to each other despite having the same name. Some of the stations are very deep underground, and transfer times between certain metro lines can take a lot of time. In the city centre, it can save time to go directly to the above-ground entrance of the line you want to take rather than to enter at a connecting station and transfer underground. On the escalators, stand on the right and walk on the left except for peak hours, when standing on the left side is also allowed.

Some of the train stations include beautiful architecture and it is worth taking a guided tour of the metro system. The most interesting stations in terms of decor are Komsomolskaya (ring line), Novoslobodskaya (ring line), Kievskaya (ring line), Kropotkinskaya (Line #1 - red), Kievskaya (Line #3 - dark blue), Arbatskaya (Line #3 - dark blue), Ploschad' Revolyutsii (Line #3 - dark blue), Mayakovskaya (Line #2 - dark green). Also look at the architecture of the ground entrance building of Arbatskaya (Line #4 - light blue) and Krasnye Vorota (Line #1 - red). History buffs may appreciate that Metro Line #1 (red) has the oldest stations, opened in 1935.

The Vorobyovy Gory Metro Station on Line #1 (red) is unique in that it is on a bridge crossing the Moscow River. This bridge also carries auto traffic road on another level. There is a beautiful view through the transparent sides of the station. A great observing point around Moscow is located nearby on Vorobyovy hills, next to the main building of Lomonosov Moscow State University.

There are a couple of unique trains operating through the system and you will be lucky if you get to ride them. Aquarelle (Watercolor) is a train that includes an art gallery. The train operates daily on Line #3 (dark blue). The Sokolniki Retro Train is a train modeled after the original 1930s trains and it occasionally is placed into service, usually around a major anniversary of the metro system.

The metro is relatively safe, although pickpockets are a problem, as they are in any environment where a lot of people are pressed together. Opportunistic petty crime, such as snatching someone's mobile phone and jumping out just as the doors are closing, is also commonplace. Take the usual precautions at night when gangs of inebriated teenagers may look for an excuse to beat someone up. There is no train guard or conductor, so the first car near the driver may be the safest. Every car is equipped with an intercom to the driver's cabin; they are beige boxes with a grill and a black button near doors, and mostly work, unless visibly vandalized.

By tram [ edit ]

There are several tram routes, although trams are not common in the city centre.

By monorail [ edit ]

Moscow Monorail is a 4.7 km (2.9 mi) monorail line with 6 stations. It is slower, less frequent, and has shorter operating hours when compared with the metro (every 30 min, 08:00-20:00). However, the view is picturesque. It is useful to get to the Ostankino Tower, or to get to the VDNKh exhibition centre from Metro Line #9 (silver). Interchanges between Moscow Metro and Monorail is free, no additional fee will be charged.

By hop-on-hop-off bus [ edit ]

The hop-on-hop-off bus is a convenient way for tourists to see the major sights quickly and efficiently. The buses feature English-speaking guides to answer any questions. A 1 day pass costs $24 for adults and $15 for children.

See [ edit ]

Do [ edit ].

Moscow has many attractions, but many of them are not friendly to a non-Russian-speaker. English-language newspapers like The Moscow Times , Element [dead link] , Moscow News and others can help to navigate towards English-language friendly attractions and services.

Circuses [ edit ]

Theatres [ edit ].

  • Bolshoi Theatre , one of the oldest and best known ballet and opera companies in the world.

Learn [ edit ]

boat trip comino

Moscow remains the educational center of Russia and the former USSR. There are 222 institutes of higher education, including 60 state universities & 90 colleges. Some of these offer a wide-spectrum of programs, but most are centered around a specific field. This is a hold-over from the days of the USSR, when Sovietwide there were only a handful of wide-spectrum "universities" and a large number of narrow-specialization "institutes" (mostly in Moscow & St.Petersburg). Moscow offers some of the best business/management, science, & arts schools in the world. Moscow is also a popular destination for foreign students to learn Russian.

Work [ edit ]

You will need a work visa which is not an easy process. The visa needs to be arranged well in advance of traveling. It is possible to work in Moscow, you just need to find a good company to support you. The main obstacle for many foreigners will be a mandatory Russian language exam required to obtain a work permit.

Shopping malls [ edit ]

Large shopping malls are common near metro stations.

Tipping [ edit ]

For information on tipping in restaurants, see Russia#Eat .

Ethnic food [ edit ]

Authentic ethnic food from countries of the nearby Caucasus ( Azerbaijan , Georgia , Armenia ) is common in Moscow. Japanese food, including sushi, rolls, tempura, and steakhouses are very popular in Moscow. Other Asian cuisines including Vietnamese, Thai, and Chinese are becoming increasingly more common.

Budget [ edit ]

Street food [ edit ].

Free-standing kiosks serving sausages, meat pies, or kebobs are plentiful, although the origins of the meat served is questionable and the food has been known to occasionally make people sick.

Muscovites are also fond of their ice cream, consumed in any weather, even in the dead of winter, cheap and usually of superior quality; kiosks can be found all over the center and near all Metro stations.

Foodcourts 2.0 [ edit ]

This term is used in articles by local food critics: since 2016, several special food courts were opened with independent and small food chains, for those people who get bored of McDonald's-like food. They offer a wider choice of cuisines.

Clubs [ edit ]

Nightlife in Moscow is bustling, intense and exciting. It starts quite late; it's common for the headliners to start at 02:00-02:00. Most noticeable are areas near Solyanka street and Krasniy Oktyabr' place. At summer time a lot of clubs opening open-air terraces called "verandas". Most of clubs in Moscow are very picky of who they let in, so make sure you have a positive attitude and dress up if you are going to a fancy club.

Gazgolder [dead link] (not far from Kremlin) is among the best.

Cafes [ edit ]

Moscow has several café chains with great coffee including Coffeemania and Coffee Bean [dead link] . Moscow also has a good selection of tea saloons. High-quality infusion teas such as Newby, are widely available in cafes, both in packets and loose.

Asking to add boiling water to the tea you ordered earlier is a practice that some cafes don't welcome, but normally it's acceptable.

Sleep [ edit ]

Stay safe [ edit ].

Moscow enjoys a relatively low crime rate.

boat trip comino

Drunk people are the most likely sources of problems. In the past years, lots of policemen were corrupt, and it was best to avoid them. Nowadays Moscow has a Tourist Police force, whose officers are able to speak foreign languages and help tourists. Police officers are equipped with body-cameras.

It is preferable to avoid some parts of the outer districts of Moscow, especially in the south. Some of those areas are notorious for gopniks (drunkards notorious for muggings and starting fights with strangers, and will do so seemingly unprovoked), who normally hang out in sparse residential areas and in industrial zones. The same problems can be witnessed in the surrounding regions and in other Russian cities as well.

While traveling in Moscow, as in the rest of Russia, you should always have your passport with you. If you look non-white, your papers may get checked more often than otherwise. The police may demand to see your papers to check if you have been registered within 7 business days of your arrival into Moscow. Always remember that if you stay in a hotel then you are automatically registered and will be handed a confirmation paper at a time of check-in, so don't worry in this case. The police are usually looking for migrants from Central Asia and unless you fit this profile, you are unlikely to be questioned.

Women should take caution walking alone late at night since they may receive unwanted attention from drunk men. Women should also stay clear of large companies of men in front of bars, restaurants, etc. It is best to walk with a friend if possible.

Streets can become very slippery in winter. Wear shoes or, even better, boots with decent grip to prevent twisted ankles. Ice patches can be hard to spot. A waterproof raincoat is also sensible.

Traffic is poorly handled, and vehicle accident rates are very high. Stay safe.

If you need help with translation, ask students or pupils: younger people are more likely to be able to help you than the older generations.

Beeline Wi-Fi [dead link] operates the largest network of both paid and free Wi-Fi access points. If there is a charge, you can pay online via credit card.

There is a large network of free Wi-Fi hotspots in the city centre; check your device in the middle of a busy area and you may find one.

Many cafes and restaurants offer Wi-Fi - ask for password. Most bookstores offer free Wi-Fi, including "Dom Knigi" on New Arbat Street or "Respublika" bookstore on Tverskaya near Mayakovskaya Metro Station.

Some establishments that offer free Wi-Fi may require you to verify an authorization code sent to a Russian phone number before gaining access, but for the most part, foreign numbers also work as of 2016.
