Our family was drawn to Huntsville because of the schools, job opportunities, amenities, and housing prices – and many more people are doing the same!

Of course, lots of people come to visit Huntsville and the surrounding area. We have some truly unique craft alcohol experiences to offer both locals and visitors. Downtown we have a former middle school that has been transformed into a space that houses breweries, restaurants, a coffee shop, meeting spaces, a ballroom, and bars. Elsewhere in the complex, you can find other fun places like an arcade, ax-throwing, and a wine bar.

Across town, you’ll find bars and restaurants that make visiting downtown worthwhile. From Phat Sammy’s, a tiki bar, to Sip, a swanky cigar bar, there are options for everyone.

There are craft breweries of all sizes around the city including Straight to Ale, Yellowhammer, Chandler’s Ford Brewing, Innerspace Brewing, Salty Nut, Green Bus Brewing, and Mad Malts. There is a Craft Beer Trail to follow, and recently the Downtown Huntsville Craft Cocktail Trail was unveiled which includes seven stops each offering a specific cocktail made for the trail.

I am a beer enthusiast and homebrewer. I have a nice homebrew system in my garage and I enjoy making various styles and variations. My favorite types of beer to drink and brew are porters, kolsch’s, and IPAs. My wife enjoys drinking sour beers, wine, and mixed drinks – especially with friends.

An example of just how enthusiastic I am about craft beer is a road trip that we took in 2018. Over nine days, we drove around the southeast visiting friends and breweries. We jumped off from Columbus GA and traveled through Nashville, TN, to Richmond, VA, down to Fayetteville, NC, through Athens, GA, and back home again.

I visited 15 breweries on the trip, and as a family, we visited eight more. Our two sons had a blast and we made memories that we’ll always cherish!

The value was definitely there, we went to 3 different breweries and had several complementary samples at each facility. Very friendly and entertaining tour guides.

Each location gives guests an immersive feel of the brewery. We come up close to the owner / operator and we are able to get questions answered. The tour easily transports guests from one location to another. Each brewery offers at least two flights. Guests have an opportunity to taste the flavors of the establishment and quickly select favorites to try again. The tour time is comfortable and well-paced, we have plenty of time to sample, to mingle and explore the venue. The merchandise offered at the venue is one-of-a-kind so shoppers have an abundant selection of local goods.

Great interactions at each brewery with the staff and brewers. The samples were great and the group seemed to have a great time.

Huntsville Brews Cruise was great way to spend a few hours exploring some new-to-me breweries! Vehicle was very clean, snacks and water provided, and host was fantastic.

Perfect experience for new residents to the area that want to see breweries and places they haven't been to before.

It's a nice mix of touring some breweries while more beer tasting at others. Patrick does a great job hosting the event and having snacks and water on the bus. The bus is very clean as well!

Boy oh boy was this a fun trip! I definitely will go again when I’m back in the area. I felt very safe and had a blast with my friends. Be sure to ask Pat questions because he is extremely knowledgeable and has some good dad jokes.

Great time! The Huntsville Brews Cruise is just what Huntsville needs. The tours were fun, interesting and educational, plus Patrick and Adrianne were excellent hosts. We visited Innerspace, Green Bus and Chandler Ford breweries. All stops had excellent beers. The tours of the brew houses and the tutorials from the brewers were informative.

The beers were very tasty at each location. Interstellar offered their top selling summer beers - very flavorful and refreshing. Green Bus offered their best sellers as well as a tour of their brewing room. The owner gave the tour and was very thorough about the process of brewing as well as some neat facts about the brewery. Our last stop was Chandlers Ford Brewing (in BeeZr) where they had some pizza for us to try as well as their top beers. This stop was also very informative about the pour method, aroma, and glass styles. The tour was full of incredible beer and really shows off the beer scene in downtown Huntsville.

Algonquin Cruises Set Sail at Deerhurst Resort

First cruise june 28, 2019.

A new cruise will ply the waters of famed Peninsula Lake in Huntsville with its home port at Deerhurst Resort. The  Tom Thomson , a name that is synonymous with the area, is setting sail with cruises taking place 5 days a week form June 28 – October 13.

The cruise is scheduled to sail four times a day; three 1hr sightseeing tours, and one evening 1.5hr sunset cruise. All cruises will be narrated giving guests a fully immersive experience that dives into the unique history and heritage of Huntsville. The area was pioneered through the waterways, and guests will gain a true appreciation for how the lakes shaped Muskoka’s history, past present and future.

Algonquin Cruises

Everyone knows the Lady Muskoka (pictured above) that has been sailing the Muskoka River for decades. Owner and operator Stephen Wyllie of the iconic Lady Muskoka is passionate about cruise ships, so passionate in fact that he brought the Tom Thomson to Huntsville. Although the ship is new to Muskoka, it has had a past life in Ottawa sailing the  Rideau Canal . Getting the ship here was no small feat, but the joy (and amazing sights) this cruise will bring makes it all worth while.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
