How to Plan a Yangtze River Cruise Tour

Though the ship experience onboard Yangtze River cruises will be extremely leisure and hassle-free, planning such a tour is not easy at all. There are many questions requiring your answers. When to cruising? Downstream or upstream? Which ship company and ship to choose? Where to go before and after the cruise trip?

By time and weather : the best time to experience Yangtze River cruises comes in April, May, September and October, when you will get the most pleasant weather. November is also suggested, because the weather is still good enough for cruising and the price is attractive.

By trip length : The upstream cruise trip from Yichang to Chongqing takes about 5 days, while the downstream trip from Chongqing to Yichang takes about 4 days.

By ship company and ship : there are more than 6 ship companies and more than 28 ships serving on Yangtze River. Prices, features and cruising schedules vary according to different ships. Century Cruises , Victoria Cruises and Yangtze Explorer are our pick of best recommends. If you want more choices, please check all Yangtze River ships to get more idea.

By entire itinerary : If you are going to visit cities close to Chongqing before the cruise trip, like Chengdu, Leshan, Lijiang, Kunming, Guiyang, Lhasa, you are suggested to select the downstream cruises. While if you coming from cities like Wuhan, Zhangjiajie, Guilin, Yangshuo, the upstream journey from Yichang side is more recommended.

The Three Gorges on the Yangtze River

The Three Gorges on the Yangtze River

The Three Gorges are world famous as the most scenic section of the navigable reaches of the Yangtze, and the location of the Three Gorges Dam. They form a series of natural and cultural attractions on a Yangtze Cruise between Chongqing and Yichang on the middle reaches of the Yangtze.

Qutang Gorge

Qutang (/chyoo-tung/ 'Qu (a family name) pond') Gorge begins at the county town of Fengjie, about 500 km (300 miles) downstream from Chongqing City, in Chongqing Municipality .

Wu ('Witch') Gorge begins where Daning River joins the Yangtze at Wushan.

Travelling up the Daning River takes travelers through the Lesser Three Gorges , a compact version of the Three Gorges , which has a still narrower set of gorges, called the Mini Three Gorges, at the far end.

Wu Gorge is also about 40 km long, and joins Xiling Gorge at the county town of Badong (/bar-dong/ literally: 'east of East Sihuan and Chongqing', just over the border in Hubei Province).

It is about 40 km (25 mi) long, and ends at Wushan (/woo-shan/ 'witch mountain') County Town. Read more

Xiling Gorge

Xiling (/sshee-ling/ 'west mountain range') Gorge starts from Badong, where Shennong Stream and the Yangtze meet.

The crystal clear waters, suspended walkways, and hanging coffins of Shennong Stream draw tourists for mini-cruises to explore this side attraction.

Sanyou Cave (/san-yo/ 'three travellers'), where three famous ancient poets are said to have stayed, is the best cave in the Three Gorges area. Sanyou Cave is about 10 km (6 mi) from Yichang on Xiling Gorge.

Xiling Gorge is about 100 km (60 mi) long and finishes at Yichang City. Read more

Recent Changes to the Three Gorges — Huge Dams

The Three Gorges were once a dangerous stretch of the river, nevertheless frequently used for shipping, with the inland industrial center of Chongqing as the hub.

Since the construction of the Three Gorges Dam (structurally complete in 2006) the river level has been raised by up to 180 m (590 ft), and the river has become much quieter and more navigable.

  • The world record smashing Three Gorges Dam , the world's largest dam and hydroelectric power station, is in Xiling Gorge .
  • The earlier Gezhou Dam (completed in 1988) is at Yichang City, the Three Gorges Dam is 35 km (23 mi) upriver.

Cruise ships now travel between Chongqing and Yichang on placid, lake-like waters , enclosed by steep cliffs , giving passengers a better chance to see the beauty of the gorges.

Best Time to Visit Three Gorges of Yangtze River

The best time to visit Yangtze River Three Gorges is from March in spring to November in autumn. In spring, blooming flowers on two banks are so beautiful. In summer, the mountain peaks are at its greenest covered by lush plants. As for autumn, you can appreciate the red leaves all over the peaks. However, the river water is turbid during the rainy days and the peaks are veiled in mist, therefore you’d better not go sightseeing there in such period.

Largest electric cruise ship makes debut

yangtze river 3 gorges cruise

The world's largest electric cruise ship, the Yangtze River Three Gorges 1, developed in China, made its maiden voyage in Yichang, Hubei province, on Tuesday.

The ship, which is 100 meters long and 16.3 meters wide, can accommodate 1,300 passengers and will mainly be used for Yangtze River sightseeing trips near Yichang.

The ship is powered purely by electricity provided by battery capacity of 7,500 kilowatt-hours, the equivalent of the total battery capacity of more than 100 electric cars. It can travel 100 kilometers on a single charge, the equivalent of 530 metric tons of fuel, and will account for a reduction of 1,660 tons of emissions each year.

The ship is a project sponsored by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the Ministry of Transport in a bid to tap clean energy and green transportation.

With an investment of 150 million yuan ($23.5 million), the ship was developed by China Yangtze Power, a subsidiary of China Three Gorges Corp, and Hubei Three Gorges Tourism Group. Other leading ship manufacturers and research institutes including China Shipbuilding Industry Corp and Beijing University of Technology also participated in research and development.

Zhang Xingliao, general manager of China Yangtze Power, said the ship generates zero pollution and zero emissions, as it is powered by clean hydropower electricity from the Three Gorges Dam.

The ship also features low noise and low vibration, compared with the high noise and strong vibrations common in ships powered by diesel engines. The Yangtze River Three Gorges 1 can sail more smoothly and passengers will feel more comfortable, he said.

The project developers also managed to reduce the equipment failure rate and operation and maintenance cost by equipping the ship with an automatic control system and intelligent power management system, he added.

Lei Mingshan, chairman of China Three Gorges Corp, said at the ceremony to launch the maiden voyage on Tuesday morning that the ship is a milestone in promoting green transportation, the protection of the Yangtze River and a low-carbon future.

He said the corporation will take the maiden voyage as a starting point for increasing investment in the zero-carbon industry in the Yangtze River basin.

Cheng Lu, a passenger from Wuhan, the capital of Hubei, said the ship sailed very smoothly and she "couldn't feel it moving".

"It was not my first time to take an electric boat, but it was my first time to ride on such a big electric ship. It felt almost like sliding on flat ground," she said.

Chen Guohai, the captain of the ship, said he has been sailing ships for more than 20 years but this was his first time to maneuver an electric ship. As the ship's first captain, Chen said he has gone on several trial voyages and had to sail out every day for the past month for testing.

As an experienced captain on conventional ships, Chen, 46, said that handling the electric ship felt different, as its operation is more flexible and all systems are controlled by computers.

"Before, I used my own experience to determine if any equipment went wrong. Now it is all monitored by computers. For problems regarding electricity consumption and battery endurance, there are data for comparison and automatic control," he said.

Three Gorges Dam: The world's largest hydroelectric plant

Three Gorges Dam, China

In 2012, the Three Gorges Dam in China took over the #1 spot of the largest hydroelectric dam (in electricity production ), replacing the Itaipú hydroelectric power plant in Brazil and Paraguay. The Three Gorges Dam has a generating capacity of 22,500 megawatts (MW) compared to 14,000 MW for the Itaipu Dam. But, over a year-long period, both dams can generate about the same amount of electricity because seasonal variations in water availability on the Yangtze River in China limit power generation at Three Gorges for a number of months during the year.

The height of Three Gorges is about 594 feet (181 meters (m)) and the length is about 7,770 feet (2, 335 m). The dam creates the Three Gorges Reservoir, which has a surface area of about 400 square miles (1,045 square kilometers) and extends upstream from the dam about 370 miles (600 kilometers).

In the United States, the Grand Coulee Dam on the Columbia River, Washington, is the largest, with a generating capacity of about 6,800 MW (5th overall worldwide).

Longjin Brook

Longjin Brook is one of the most charming scenic spots in the Tribe of the Three Gorges. There are many stilted houses by the river, built by local people, and many of them are Tujia ethnic minority group.

Along the Longjin Brook, there is the Brook-side Village, where you will find young girls washing clothes in a traditional way, and a girl in red holding a red umbrella standing in the front of wooden sailboat. While the scenery, with the green mountains covered by mist against the clear water, is like a beautiful landscape painting.

Village on the Water

The Village on the Water is part of Three Gorges Tribe scenic spot, located at the junction of Longjin Brook and Yangtze River. The boatmen performance provided here presents the working scene of fishing and other part of life along Yangtze River.

One of the most impressive parts would be the roaring of boatmen, which is called “Haozi” (号子) in Chinese as a unique form of folk art of the Three Gorges area. The “Haozi of Yangtze Boatmen” was listed in the performing arts of Intangible Cultural Heritage of China in 2008.

“Crying Marriage” Folk Show

Another highlight is the “Crying Marriage” Folk Show. The show is based on the wedding custom of local Tujia people. According to old stories, every bride had to cry at her wedding ceremony. Otherwise, she would become the laughingstock of the village and her neighbors would look down upon her family.

During the show, the beautiful “bride” will throw a wedding ball to the audience, and one lucky man who get the ball will be invited onto stage and he would be the “bridegroom”.
