Known as South Carolina's premiere PGA TOUR event, the RBC Heritage has been played on Hilton Head Island since 1969. Its host, the Heritage Classic Foundation, donates Tournament proceeds to charitable organizations in the Lowcountry.
A Rich History
Today, Hilton Head Island golf courses are known around the world for challenging play and outstanding resort amenities. But in 1969, Hilton Head Island was just a little-known Lowcountry treasure. So when Sea Pines developer Charles Fraser announced a PGA-level tournament would be held at the newly created Harbour Town Golf Links over Thanksgiving weekend, people had their doubts. An unfamiliar course on a little-known island on a holiday weekend? There was no guarantee the big names in golf would be there for the first Heritage Classic.
But when both Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus (who had helped legendary golf course designer Pete Dye lay out the course) committed to play, people began to realize the Heritage Classic was going to be something special. Palmer went on to win the inaugural Heritage Classic, his first victory in 14 months, drawing even more press coverage than usual. Commentators and journalists praised Dye’s new links course and soon everyone knew that Hilton Head Island was THE new resort destination.
Since Then, Much Has Changed
The RBC Heritage is now held the week after the Masters, and the original purse of $100,000 ($770,000 in today’s dollars) has jumped to $20 million. The fan base has grown, too, thanks in part to extensive TV coverage by both CBS and The Golf Channel. Each year, more than 100,000 spectators arrive from across the US and around the globe, bringing an estimated $102 million annually to the state. And each year, the RBC Heritage leaderboard features some of the biggest names and brightest stars in the sport.
The RBC Heritage kicks off like no other event on the PGA TOUR. The past champion, Heritage Classic Foundation Board members, volunteers and state dignitaries parade around the Harbour Town Yacht Basin to the sounds of the Citadel's Pipe and Drum band. The past champion is presented with his Captain of Gentlemen Golfers plaque and continues the tradition of using an authentic hickory club to hit a featherie-style golf ball into the Calibogue Sound in unison with a cannon shot. Those shots officially begin the start of Tournament week and are a reenactment of a Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews tradition dating at least to the mid-18th century.
American Golf: Where it all began
The story of golf in our country begins in South Carolina, and its heritage is centered right here on Harbour Town Golf Links. Watch our video to learn about the history and ongoing purpose of the RBC Heritage: giving back to our community.
The First in America
Many historians had believed a golf club outside Yonkers, NY, was the first to import the sport from Scotland in 1886. However, Sea Pines founder Charles Fraser uncovered a ship's manifest from 1786 that noted that "golfer sticks" and "featheries"—a pre-20th century golf ball made from boiled bird feathers and cowhide—had been shipped to residents in South Carolina and Georgia. His findings indicated golf may have arrived at Harleston Green in Charleston a full hundred years before it was played in Yonkers. Fraser honored that Scottish heritage by naming the PGA TOUR event the "Heritage Classic."
While much has changed over the years, the Tournament still maintains the unique Lowcountry hospitality and family-friendly fun that have made the RBC Heritage one of the best stops on the tour for both players and fans.

Past Champions
The list of past winners is a veritable who’s who of golf’s greatest players:
Sustainability at the RBC Heritage
Over the past few years, we've been working hard to make sure the RBC Heritage is one of the most sustainable tournaments on the PGA TOUR. We're seeking to lighten the overall environmental footprint of the event while taking steps to foster nature, conserve resources, and engage and support the local community.
Here are a few of our commitments and achievements—and some of the ways you can get involved and help us in KEEPING IT GREEN!
GEO Certified® Tournament
Last year, we set out to become one of the first PGA TOUR events to attain the GEO Certified® Tournament award. Presented by the GEO Foundation, an international not-for-profit dedicated to advancing sustainability in and through golf, the certification is awarded to tournaments that meet a published set of criteria and commit to continual improvement.
We embedded a lot of best practices into our decision making and operations, began tracking key data and highlights, reached out to work with new partners and generally stepped up our efforts.
We are delighted to say that following a very positive on-site verification visit and report from the Council for Responsible Sport, we achieved the accolade.
Check out our GEO Certified® Tournament press release here and official certification report here .
Our great thanks to our sustainability partners: The Sea Pines Resort, Experience Green and Palmetto Energy.
And we’re currently in the process of making sure the certification continues!
Reducing Waste
- Reduction of 11.71 tons of wast.
- 23.86 tons of waste was recycled—up by 1.14 tons from the previous year.
- More than 100 recycling receptacles were available to help reduce the amount of waste being sent to local landfills.
- Concessions were served in compostable or recyclable food packaging (no Styrofoam), with condiments served in bulk where possible.
- Unused food was donated to Second Helpings, a local organization that collects and distributes food to agencies serving the disadvantaged.
- All cardboard from the Tournament and Clubhouse was baled and recycled.
- All landscape debris was mulched and reused inside Sea Pines.
Carbon-Neutral Event
- Green Power Fossil Fuel reduction program saved enough to power 13 South Carolina homes for a whole year!
- By working with Palmetto Electric Cooperative and Santee Cooper , the 2019 RBC Heritage tournament was powered by 100% renewable energy-sourced mains electricity.

Environmentally Responsible Golf Course Operations
- Harbour Town Golf Links, along with the two other courses in Sea Pines Resort, received the GEO Certified® distinction in 2015 . Only 10 golf facilities in the US have been awarded this honor for measurably advancing comprehensive sustainability.
- Since 2006, Harbour Town Golf Links has been certified as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary . Less than 5% of US golf courses have this prestigious environmental designation.
How to Be a Green Patron
- Think before you toss —Use designated bins to separate your recyclables from trash that will go to the landfill.
- Travel the better way —Carpool, bike or walk to the event to reduce vehicle emissions.
- Watch your step —Harbour Town Golf Links is GEO Certified® and has been designated as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary . Many of the vegetative features surrounding wetlands and lagoons are important wildlife habitats and buffers to protect water quality .

Matt Fitzpatrick defeats Jordan Spieth in dramatic RBC Heritage playoff
- Fitzpatrick secures emotional victory at Harbour Town
- He is second Englishman to win event after Nick Faldo
Matthew Fitzpatrick has claimed his first win since last year’s US Open, winning the RBC Heritage at the third playoff hole at Harbour Town, after a thrilling duel with three-time major winner Jordan Spieth for the title.
Fitzpatrick became the first Englishman to win the tournament since Nick Faldo in 1984 after Spieth cruelly lipped out a $5.4 million putt to fall heartbreakingly short of becoming just the tournament’s fourth-ever back-to-back winner.
Spieth long looked in the ascendancy but couldn’t close out birdie putts at both the first and second playoff holes that would’ve claimed the win. At the third playoff hole, Fitzpatrick almost holed out from the fairway to leave himself with just a tap-in for birdie.
Spieth couldn’t respond, making Englishman the winner of the $3.6 million (A$5.4m) top prize. The American had to settle for second and a cheque for $2.2 million. Americans Patrick Cantlay came third at 16-under, missing the playoff by one shot, followed by Xander Schaffuele one shot further back.
Fitzpatrick, the 2022 US Open champion, triumphed in the town where he spent many of his family vacations after first visiting as a six-year-old.
“It’s hard to describe,” the 28-year-old from Sheffield said. “I said to (caddie) Billy (Foster), it doesn’t get better than this – walking down here, just looking around. It’s a course I dreamed of playing when I was young.”
“I managed to play a couple of times with my dad and yes, this one means more than anything.” Fitzpatrick’s family was at Harbour Town to share the victory with him.
Spieth had made four birdies in the opening six holes but he missed a short putt for bogey on the par-three 14th and left the door open for Fitzpatrick.
after newsletter promotion
The Englishman then made birdies on the 15th and 16th to grab a share of the lead and could have won it at the death if Spieth hadn’t made a tricky six-footer to force the playoff.
“It was a really good round. I got off to a dream start and then just kind of hung in there for a little while and then made a nice putt to get into the playoff, and then played the playoff really well,” said Spieth.
“Someone was going to make a birdie. It wasn’t going to be a bogey to lose that playoff the way that we were both playing today. He just did what he needed to do on 15 in, when it had been kind of me and Patrick for a little while there. He just snuck in and played some tremendous golf.”

Matt Fitzpatrick Wins 2023 RBC Heritage After Three-Hole Sudden Death Playoff With Jordan Spieth
- Author: Gabrielle Herzig
In a three-hole sudden-death playoff, Matt Fitzpatrick defeated RBC Heritage defending champion Jordan Spieth, and emerged victorious at a PGA Tour venue that he has always cherished.
Playing in the final pairing with Spieth and Patrick Cantlay , Fitzpatrick clinched the victory by sticking a 9-iron to less than a foot on Harbour Town’s 18th hole—the pair’s third playoff hole. That very same club highlighted the 18th hole of Fitzpatrick’s major championship victory at the U.S. Open last June.
MORE: Final prize money, payouts from Harbour Town
“It was another 9-iron,” Fitzpatrick joked after he tapped in the birdie putt.
Fitzpatrick grew up playing the famed Hilton Head Island golf course on family vacations. He says the Pete Dye design is his favorite on the PGA Tour behind only Augusta National.
“Yeah, it’s hard to describe. I said to Billy, it doesn’t get better than this. Walking down here just looking around, it’s a course I dreamed of playing when I was young” Fitzpatrick said.
On the first two playoff holes, Spieth and Fitzpatrick both had looks at tournament-clinching putts. On the opening playoff hole, Spieth had just 13 feet for birdie, but his putt just skirted the edge of the cup, prompting a colorful reaction from the Texan.
On the next—the par-3 17th—both players hit irons to inside 12 feet, but neither could convert for birdie. It wasn’t until the pair headed back to the 18th hole for a second time that Fitzpatrick was able to seal the deal by taking dead-aim for the pin.
“I just felt like I had to be really patient. I felt like if I could just hang on in there, do as best I can. I felt like I’ve been playing really solid, felt like I had a great week last week and coming into the week in practice I felt pretty solid too,” Fitzpatrick said.
Fitzpatrick shot a career-low round of 63 that included a hole-out eagle on Saturday to take a one-shot lead heading into the final round. Spieth sat two shots behind the Englishman at 12-under and fired off a final round 66 to enter the playoff. On the final sudden-death hole, Spieth’s distance control got the better of him, as he was left with a 33-foot putt to match Fitzpatrick’s guaranteed birdie.
Fitzpatrick will be the first Englishman to don the tartan jacket since 1984.
Leading up to his second career victory on the PGA Tour, Fitzpatrick battled a nagging neck injury that sent him into a temporary rough stretch earlier this season. Once the 28-year-old’s neck started to bother him, he missed four out of seven cuts, including at the Genesis Invitational and the Players Championship.
Next week, Fitzpatrick will tee it up in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans —the PGA Tour’s annual team-format event—with his younger brother Alex, who currently plays on the Challenge Tour in Europe.

The PGA TOUR uses a standardized system for determining event fields, based off the current season’s Priority Ranking while also including additional exemption and qualifying categories.
Field sizes can vary by event, as can the number of event-specific exemptions. Fully exempt PGA TOUR members are guaranteed entry into all full-field events, with various conditional categories subject to periodic reshuffles based upon FedExCup Points accrued throughout the season. Categories with 'reshuffle' notation indicate that a reshuffle period has occurred.
Note: An additional year of eligibility was granted to some categories because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Valspar-winning Malnati looks ahead to RBC Heritage and calls the tournament 'amazing'
M ar. 25—Shortly after winning the 2024 Valspar Championship at Innisbrook Resort's Copperhead Course in Palm Harbor, Florida, on Sunday, Peter Malnati shared some thoughts about his newfound eligibility to play in the PGA Tour's upcoming signature tournaments, including the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links.
Malnati called the upcoming RBC Heritage tournament "amazing."
At the Copperhead course, he carded a 4-under 67 in the final round on Sunday to claim his second PGA Tour victory, $1.51 million, and his first win in nine years.
"We've put an emphasis, and rightfully so, on prioritizing getting the top players in the world to play together more often," Malnati said during his post-round press conference. "Right now I'm 16th in the world in the Fed-Ex Cup, and I'm going to have a strong handful of opportunities in those fields.
"To be in those is incredibly meaningful because, first of all, they're some of my favorite tournaments. I get to go play Hilton Head. Hilton Head, next to this golf course (Copperhead), is one of the most challenging courses that we play all year, and it's one that I look forward to going to each and every year, so knowing that I might not have been there this year was motivation to play really well and work hard and try to get there. And now I'm there, and it's amazing."
Players will begin the scheduled four rounds of the 56th annual RBC Heritage on Thursday, April 18.

2023 RBC Heritage one and done picks, sleepers, purse: PGA Tour predictions, best bets from top golf expert
Mike mcclure has locked in his sleepers and pga one and done golf picks this week for the rbc heritage 2023 at harbour town golf links.
The biggest names on the PGA Tour are set to take on Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head, S.C. this week for the 2023 RBC Heritage. World No. 2 Scottie Scheffler is the 8-1 betting favorite in the latest RBC Heritage odds at Caesars Sportsbook. He is followed by 2023 Masters champion Jon Rahm (17-2), Patrick Cantlay (14-1), Jordan Spieth (18-1), Collin Morikawa (18-1), Viktor Hovland (20-1), Tony Finau (22-1), Xander Schauffele (22-1), and Cameron Young (22-1). As an elevated event, the tournament features a purse of $20 million, with $3.6 million going to the champion.
As the 2023 Masters champion, Rahm will likely be a very popular PGA one and done pick this week. Is the new world No. 1 a must play this week at Harbour Town? Or would it make more sense to go with a sleeper like Max Homa, Sungjae Im, or Rickie Fowler? Before locking in your 2023 RBC Heritage one and done picks, you need to see what SportsLine DFS pro and PGA expert Mike McClure has to say .
The One and Done format is growing in popularity. It has several noticeable similarities to NFL Survivor pools, with the main difference being entries are not eliminated with a bad week. Players pick one golfer per week and earn points based on their selected golfer's prize money for that tournament. Golfers can only be used once per season, and the point format makes nailing majors and big money tournaments critical.
McClure is a DFS legend with nearly $2 million in career winnings, and he's been red-hot on his PGA picks dating back to the PGA Tour restart in June of 2020. McClure uses his proprietary simulation model to analyze the field and crush his golf picks .
McClure has nailed plenty of One and Done picks, including Luke List at the Sentry Tournament of Champions. At the Farmers Insurance Open, McClure's top One and Done pick, Max Homa, outlasted the entire field to take home his sixth career PGA Tour victory and $1.566 million. At the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, McClure backed 48-1 long shot Taylor Pendrith in One and Done pools, and he came through for $271,100. At the WM Phoenix Open, McClure nailed Scheffler winning the tournament, taking home $3.6 million. At the Genesis Invitational, he was all over Max Homa, who finished in second place and took home $2.18 million. At the Arnold Palmer Invitational, McClure took 35-1 longshot Jason Day, who finished in 10th place for $485,000. And at Valspar Championship, McClure's top OAD pick, Tommy Fleetwood, finished in third place.
Now, McClure has dialed in on the 2023 RBC Heritage golf tournament, and just locked in his one and done picks and PGA predictions. You can only see McClure's RBC Heritage one and done picks at SportsLine .
Top 2023 RBC Heritage One and Done picks
One of McClure's top one and done picks this week for the RBC Heritage is 26-year-old Collin Morikawa. The five-time PGA Tour winner comes in at 18-1 to win the tournament, but McClure believes he has tremendous upside this week against an elite field at Harbour Town. Morikawa, the No. 11 player in the world, is coming off a top-10 finish at the Masters and has three top-6 finishes in eight starts in 2023
The two-time major champion is elite in several metrics. He ranks second on the PGA Tour in strokes gained on approach (1.095), fourth in strokes gained tee-to-green (1.725), ninth in total strokes gained (1.622), and 22nd in strokes gained off the tee (0.462). With the massive amount of talent in the RBC Heritage field, it's very possible that Morikawa will fly under the radar in one and done pools this week offering huge value. You can see who else to back this week at SportsLine .
How to make 2023 RBC Heritage One and Done picks
McClure is also targeting another golfer for his 2023 RBC Heritage one and done picks that is listed at 28-1 in the latest PGA golf odds. This player has been red-hot dating back to 2022, but consistently flies under the radar and has the ability to win any tournament he enters. You can find out who it is, and check out all of McClure's RBC Heritage 2023 One and Done picks, at SportsLine .
Who wins the 2023 RBC Heritage? And which golfers should you target for your PGA one and done picks this week? Visit SportsLine now to get Mike McClure's RBC Heritage 2023 one and done picks, all from the DFS pro with over $2 million in career winnings , and find out.
