TOURDATES & TICKETS
Metal lyrics often deal with serious topics such as war, civil unrest, injustice, political views, etc. and in that sense pirate metal is a breath of fresh air. Pirate metal bands don’t take themselves or life in general too seriously and it’s all in good fun. One of the leading bands in the genre is Alestorm. They forge a clever and infectious combination of power metal and folk metal but on occasion they still like to experiment with other genres such as thrash, black and death metal. While it’s easy to dismiss the gimmick of grown men pretending to be pirates as merely silly, there’s no denying that Alestorm are actually good at what they do and their songs show more musicianship than they generally get credit for. Their latest concoction ‘Seventh Rum of a Seventh Rum’ (2022) pours the same wine in the same bottle with a new label – uhm, lyrics. Once again they’ve served up the perfect party soundtrack so raise yer mugs, don yer eye patch and sing yer hearts out! Yarrr!

Gig Reports
Alestorm ”European Tour 2023” (De Mast Torhout, Belgium) – 28/01/23
It’s a fact: the first concert of 2023, at least for me, has happened. And what a banger to start with. Alestorm playing in a small venue that fit about 1500 people, you don’t see that very often. And when you do, you take your pirate hat and sword and party with them!
Rumahoy got to open the show tonight. What a great band to warm up the crowd. The band had a smile on their faces and in return got a smile on our faces. We started moving along to the beats of folky pirate metal. Even the people who were waiting in line for either merch, drinks, or toilets. We were all dancing to the funny shenanigans of Captain Yarrface and his bandmates Bootsman Walktheplank , Cabinboy Treasurequest and Swashbuckling Pete . What a great names, honestly.
I lost it when they started playing Not Looking for Love , which is a very poppy song with a high voice singing the chorus. Cabinboy Treasurequest took that upon himself to sing those lyrics. That in combination with the low pirate voice of Captain Yarrface was truly beautiful. In the video I recorded you can see and hear the joy they brought us.
Cowboys of the Sea Harambe, the Pirate Gorilla Treasure Gun Not Looking for Love Forest Party Time to Party Pirateship
From pirates, we went to dwarves. Last time I saw Wind Rose , it was the last pre-covid show in January 2020. They only played for 30 minutes then and that simply wasn’t enough. This time, they were on stage for 40 minutes, let’s stay positive and say that that is already a bit longer. At least, it’s an extra song that we got to hear. I loved to see the joy on their faces while they played their songs. We got to sing along with Mine Mine Mine! , Drunken Dwarves and the song that Wind Rose is known best for: Diggy Diggy Hole . They played the song and everybody sang along as loud as they could. At the end of the song, they put away their instruments and the song went all techno/dance on us. It was amazing, and the crowd lost it and went crazy. Wind Rose took the time to thank everybody and receive their well deserved applause from us.
Army of Stone Drunken Dwarves Fellows of the Hammer Mine Mine Mine! Together we Rise Diggy Diggy Hole
Gloryhammer
From pirates to dwarves to intergalactic superheros. Gloryhammer is one of my personal favorite bands that I have seen live quite a few times already. Although their show was a lot like the one on Graspop 2022, they always deliver good and high energy shows that feel far from repetitive. This time, our hero the Hootsman announced a new album coming this summer. He didn’t give us an exact date, unfortunately. They did give us a new song, called: Keeper of Celestial Flame . The chorus of that song was already spotted on Gloryhammer’s Instagram while lead singer Sozos was in the recording booth singing it. Well, now we have the live version to listen to, because I recorded it too. It’s a high energy song with a very catchy chorus.
Together with Fly Away , this is now the second song we have that are originally recorded with new singer Sozos and those two songs will also be on the new album called ‘ Return to the Kingdom of Five ’. They opened with The Siege of Dunkeld , and played other Gloryhammer classics like Universe on Fire, Masters of the Galaxy and Angus McFife . They closed the show with The Unicorn Invasion of Dundee . And with that, I couldn’t be more happy with the show. The next time our intergalactic heroes set foot on Belgian grounds will be at Alcatraz 2023. Hoots!
The Siege of Dunkeld (In Hoots we Trust) Gloryhammer The Land of Unicorns Fly Away Keeper of Celestial Flame Masters of the Galaxy Hootsforce Angus McFife Universe on Fire The Unicorn Invasion of Dundee
After pirates, dwarves and intergalactic superheros, we are back to the pirates of Alestorm . This time in full green and black outfits and with a massive, massive rubber ducky on stage. I know it’s always there, but seeing it on a smaller stage it just seemed huge. Drummer Peter Alcorn actually asked the stage people if they could move the duck a bit, because it was hitting his cymbals. Both him and keyboardist Elliot Vernon were playing on a raised platform.
Starting off with their classic techno / flashing lights Alestorm intro and the following song Keelhauled , we were ready for the last band of this big party. We had beef guy drinking a bottle of whine this time, not beer, followed by Hangover . He later came back in a dress too. Captain Yarrface joined on Tortuga , and we had a row pit during Nancy the Tavern Wench . So much happened during this show. So many crowd surfers came and went, where there were none before during the other bands. It was great fun.
During Graspop 2022, Alestorm brought a tribute to a deceased fan named Robbe, by playing Zombies Ate My Pirate Ship . Robbe past away earlier that year. Today, they played that song with the same heart and passion. Although they didn’t specifically announce it, I saw Elliot Vernon signing with the person next to me, who I believe was Robbe’s twin sister Rani. A beautiful moment.
To close the show, we had to swear one more time. Fucked With An Anchor was the perfect song for that. When they finished their show, Alestorm asked all the security guards on stage to thank them for catching all the crowd surfers and keeping everybody safe. Thank you Alestorm !

Encore: Drink Zombies Ate My Pirate Ship Fucked With an Anchor
Tonight was one big party! All the bands came to deliver their part of the party and the crowd was in for a good time too. Like I said in the beginning; You don’t see these bands playing a small venue very often. So when you do, you gotta be there! And if you couldn’t be there; not only Gloryhammer is coming to Alcatraz festival, also Alestorm and Wind Rose are coming. So if you missed your chance now, get your tickets to see them this summer in Kortrijk.

‘Alestorm’ are in a league of their own, weaving together a genre that is widely recognized as “pirate metal”. They hail from Perth, Scotland, and are signed to Napalm Records, with whom they have released a handful of studio albums.
The band signed to Napalm Records in 2007, and their debut album, “Captain Morgan’s Revenge” was released on January 25th 2008. The album started to build the band’s audience on an international platform, as they embarked on tours building on their profile.
This was followed by “Black Sails at Midnight” released on May 27th 2009, which included a live DVD of the band’s performance at the Wacken Festival of 2008. They played on the Paganfest tour in Europe, and Heathenfest in the United States, but most notably The Black Sails Over Europe Tour, which was prior to the release of the album. The band had 1000 copies of a teaser CD burned with three songs from “Black Sails at Midnight” on it, to generate hype adding to their campaign.
The band visited Australia and even Hard Rock Hell: Road Trip in Ibiza, before embarking on a tour before the release of their third studio album “Back Through Time”. They earned themselves a spot at the Sonisphere Festival in the UK, and a main support slot for Kamelot on their headlining North American tour. The album “Back Through Time” was released on June 3rd 2011, and made it to #42 on the German Albums Chart.
This band have many accolades to their name, having played on the “70000 Tons of Metal” cruise in the Caribbean, having supported Dragonforce, and having headlined their own North American tour. Alestorm’s fourth album, “Sunset on the Golden Age” was released on August 1st 2014.
Live reviews
Now who wouldn't want to see five musicians dressed as pirates playing their unique brand of folk metal. Alestorm's show is exactly that yet so, so much more. Pioneering a new genre that they have dubbed pirate metal, the Scottish band originally from Perth have a huge cult following in the UK and continue to sell out shows to fans who want to hear their unusual sound.
Touring across the world, the band are synonymous on the metal scene and have played at some of the most prestigious venues including Metalcamp and Wacken Open Air. All this exposure has meant the boys have created a bizarre, boisterous live show with nautical themes running through the stage set up and the setlist. Their folk rock is pretty powerful stuff, with crowds head banging along to the likes of 'Over The Seas' and popular opener 'Walk The Plank'. The characters come out from time to time, and the charisma is partly what makes them so unusual as a metal band, brilliant crowd interaction during 'Wenches & Mead' leaves fans cheering for the eccentrics' return.
They reappear with a frantic encore of '1741' and the satirically titled 'Captain Morgan's Revenge' which leaves fans cheering long after the pirates have boarded their ship to the next venue. Alestorm are a band who understand the importance of standing out in a saturated market, and for anyone who wants to see an alternative to the usual metal performers, catch them on their upcoming UK tour.

Once again a disappointing show from the overly drunk underperforming weirdos that are Alestorm. (3rd live show for me) Somehow they manage to string together a coherent performance for their albums but live they are just awful, they either need to sober up, or get better at playing when drunk. They also seem to have lost their way, lots of people turned up expecting a pirate metal themed show, but instead we got a drug addled psychedelic vision of ducks, bananas and dog shirts. A lot of disgruntled fans... Plus so many of their fans are total d***s, looking forward to Sabaton not touring with these guys anymore, because so many of the Alestorm fans are just a pain to be in a room with. 2/10
Show was a blast. The supporting bands did great for mood and getting you amped up for Alestorm. Alestorm had a ton of energy as usual, and I was pleased to discover they have a thing where people holdup a hooked hand instead of the metal horns typical at shows. Their set was good, and the pit was a blast. Everyone out for everyone to have a great time. Chris Bowes crowd surfed to the bar after the set. I've not seen Alestorm and had a bad time yet, and I don't expect that to change.
The bands I saw were, in order, Adavant, Rainbowdragoneyes, the Dread Crew of Oddwood, and the fabulous bucaneers of Alestorm. Every single band knew how to host a properly pandemonious pirate party, and every single band was worth the money I spent even if they had been the only act that night. The floor was packed, the crowd was rowdy, and the rum was plentiful. If you're looking for a hearty good time with (optional) moshing, Alestorm is a sure bet anytime.
I found the show great, a lot so singing and before they came 3 songs by Queen and everyone that I could tell was singing every work in time. It was a great start to the show, half way through the show they through out a huge plastic duck that was getting hit up into the air till it got killed it was great fun, they put on a great show all in all, security did an amazing job of catching crowd surfers
What can I say, this was a brilliant concert! From the first note the whole audience exploded with singing and partying and it only ended when the concert was finished. The band does their very best to keep everybody entertained and continually invites audience participation. Excellent music, excellent atmosphere. Recommended!
Epic as expected. Second time seeing them in London and I loved every minute of it, extremely enthusiastic crowd went perfectly with the fun loving band and their huge inflatable duck to make a memorable evening. Excellent music and excellent people. Will see yet again when they are around.
Would recommend 10/10
I went into the show with reservations (a friend brought the tickets)
Overall, i had an absolute blast! These guys are bludy Awesome!
Even the pre show bands were fkn cool!!
I've gone from a "yea i like em" to "fuck yes, these cunts rock!"
Will definitely see them again!!
If you like their music, it is pirate metal so probably yes, you will love their live performance.
Really great band with a good vibe, massive performance and everything they play is dead on.
Had a fucking fun night out.
Also wall of death.
Perfect 10/10
The show was amazing, the first cover band wasn’t really amazing in my opinion (the guitarists and drummer were brilliant) but I wasn’t a fan of the lead singer. The second cover band was actually really good and alestorm were fantastic as expected
