Meet your Ross Tours representative at Sydney Domestic Airport for your Qantas flight to Perth. On arrival in Perth our Tour Leader Colin Barlow will transfer you to the Duxton Hotel, our home near the Swan River for 2 nights. Join your fellow travellers at our Welcome Dinner tonight.

This morning we head to wildflower hotspot, Wireless Hill Park. The panoramic views of the city & Swan River are breathtaking! Then we visit the wildflowers of South Beach & Bold Park, Perth’s largest urban bushland park. Finish the day at Perth’s iconic Cottesloe Beach with dinner and sunset views overlooking the beach’s crystal clear waters and white sands.

Travel to Hyden through the famous Western Australian Wheatbelt Country. Stop at Corrigin, charmingly known as the ‘Town of Windmills’ due to the abundant supply of groundwater. Almost every home had a windmill until 1960 when the town was supplied with scheme water. Carpets of everlasting daisies and fabulous proteaceae plants including banksias, grevilleas, hakeas and dryandras are a feature of this area.

In Hyden, visit the world-famous Wave Rock, a 2,700 million-year-old granite rock that’s 15m high, 110metres long and looks remarkably like a giant wave about to break! Lunch and dinner included today.

Wave Rock Hotel , Hyden

Travel to Esperance through Salmon Gum country where pink barked eucalypts & carpets of wildflowers colour the landscape. Lunch and Dinner included today.

Hospitality Inn , Esperance

First stop this morning is Cape Le Grand Beach to view Frenchman Peak, then onto Hellfire Fire Bay, Thistle Cove and Lucky Bay, where we will hopefully see kangaroos on the beach. We will take the Merrivale Road to New Orleans Beach and Hamer Head and later in the afternoon we will arrive at Esperance’s Stonehenge, before we return to our hotel for the night. Lunch and dinner included today.

Take the cross-country road through wetlands and mallee country to Hopetoun. See water birds and iconic wildflowers including red kangaroo paw and pretty lemon flowers of the grey cottonheads, Conostylis. Lunch included.

Check into our hotel in Hopetoun for 2 nights with dinner included this evening.

Wavecrest Village , Hopetoun

The 42nd Annual Ravensthorpe Wildflower Show is our highlight today. Over 700 different species are featured at the show – celebrating the abundance of floral diversity in the region. Lunch and dinner included today.

More wildflowers today in Fitzgerald River National Park including Qualup Bells, Possum banksias, regelias, the bell-fruited mallee, Scarlet Banksia and the ‘jug’ flowers of Albany Woolly Bush. Recognised as one of the most botanically significant parks in Australia, Fitzgerald River National Park is home to nearly 20% of Western Australia’s flora species, many of them endemic. We’ll find a perfect shady picnic spot for lunch!

Dinner is included this evening.

We’re off to explore the triangle between Hopetoun, Jerdacuttup and Ravensthorpe, recognised as one of the most botanically significant areas in Australia. See banksia artwork painted wheat silos and the Ravensthorpe Ranges.

Travel on to Albany and check into our hotel, home for the next 4 nights. Albany sits on the south coast of WA, considered one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. The South West also has one of the world’s best wildflower displays!

Hilton Garden Inn , Albany

The biodiverse hotspots of the Stirling Range National Park, with more than 1,500 species of plants (123 orchid species) and the ancient Porongurup National Park with over 750 species of plants are our destinations today. Lunch is included today.

Explore the unique beauty of WA’s ancient southern coastline and incredible floral diversity. First, we head to the Gap and Natural Bridge to witness the power of nature in creating these extraordinary landforms. Hold onto your hat here their beauty will blow you away! The nearby Regional Wildflower Centre is another botanic hotspot with over 100,000 indigenous plants, many rare and endangered, the floral effect here is simply stunning! Immerse yourself in the beauty of wildflowers then step back in time at the historic Whaling Station to gain insight into the transformation of Albany from whaling to whale watching. Finally visit the award-winning ANZAC Centre. Lunch is included today.

A bucket list day! Ascend to the treetops of some of the tallest trees on earth. The Valley of the Giants Treetop Walk gives you a bird’s eye view of ancient red tingles (Eucalyptus jacksonii) – trees which occur nowhere else in the world and whose origins trace back to Gondwana! Climbing 40 metres into the forest canopy and meandering through the treetops for 600 metres, the walking trail is the first of its kind, designed to maximise views and minimise human impact. Lunch is included today.

Travel back to Perth through majestic forests of Marri Red Gums & ancient towering Jarrah trees. Enroute, stop for lunch at Kojonup and go hunting with Colin for delicate spider & cowslip orchids. Lunch included today.

Afternoon arrival at our luxurious hotel in Perth.

The Kings Park Festival celebrates the amazing plant life of Western Australia, showcasing thousands of wildflowers and more than 3,000 WA plant species, in showstopping floral displays. A fitting finale for our tour.

traveller – 1 March 2024

A great company to plan and travel with. My sister and I found everyone friendly, helpful, professional and extremely well organised. Nothing was too much trouble and even when the airline delayed our flights home twice, Kate was contactable and helpful. The wildflower itinerary was well paced and enjoyable. Highly recommended!

Cheers, Lindy

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.
