Make your day trip to Stonehenge easier by leaving the driving, transportation, and ticketing to a trusted guide. It’s a 2.5-hour drive out to Stonehenge, and if you’re not familiar with driving on the left side of the road, it can make for a stressful experience. Instead, when you book with us, you’ll feel comfortable as you sit back and let your driver do the work.
Windsor Castle
First, head to Windsor Castle, the former Queen’s favorite residence. Located just an hour outside of London, this castle and its grounds are a popular place to visit. If you’re a fan of the royals, it’s easily one of the best London tours to take.
While no guides are allowed inside the castle, you’ll be prepared with a narrative from your driver-guide ahead of time and your skip-the-line tickets. There are 13,000 acres here, and you’ll be free to explore the Grand Apartments, Queen Mary’s Doll House, and more.
Next, you’ll head over to Stonehenge, which is possibly Britain’s most famous ancient ruins. This 4,000-year-old structure is likely of Druid origin and fascinates visitors who marvel at its construction. You’ll have plenty of time to walk up to these mysterious stones and take pictures. Depending on the time of year, you might even have a chance to purchase some local strawberries to enjoy while you’re here!
Your final stop is at Bath, which is another city with deep roots from the Roman Empire. In fact, those Roman baths here are what gave this town its name, despite their original use by the Celts too. You’ll need to arrange your own tickets here, but if you’re not as interested in Roman baths, you might be tempted by the Jane Austen Museum.
This time in Bath is free for you to explore as you like after hearing all about it on your drive there. Be sure to check out any of the local restaurants your driver recommends!

7. Exclusive Meet & Greet Tour with the Tower of London Beefeaters
Private Meeting with a Beefeater
It doesn’t get more exclusive than a private 15 minutes with a Yeoman Warder (also known as a Beefeater). While these guards have a serious 20+ years of military career behind them, there’s nothing they love more than entertaining visitors with stories at the Tower in between their official duties. You can’t beat that!
Then you get to have your own guided tour of the rest of the Tower. From the Bloody Tower to St. Thomas’ Tower, Traitors Gate, and the White Tower, there’s more to explore than you can imagine. That’s why your guide is here to help you navigate and understand it all.
You’ll also get entry to the crown jewels that have wowed millions of visitors with their lavish decadence. Make sure to keep an eye out for the piece your guide tells you is the oldest in the entire collection—dating back to the early 1600s!
- Private meet & greet with a Beefeater
8. Early Access Stonehenge Morning Tour from London with Inner Circle
Even if you’re an early bird, you might not want to navigate unfamiliar roads in the wee hours of the morning. That’s why you’ll appreciate leaving those details to a confident, local driver-guide. Catch an extra hour or two of sleep while you are safely transported to Stonehenge in the pre-dawn hours.
Stonehenge Sunrise
Watching the sunrise is always a magical moment. Make it even more memorable by seeing Stonehenge in that early morning light! These ancient stones are captivating any time of the day, but with this early morning tour, you get special access to Stonehenge before the general public. It’s a truly special experience that most don’t get to have.
Salisbury Cathedral and Magna Carta
A trip to Salisbury is up next, and you’re not too far away. This is the town where you’ll find the largest spire in the UK at the Salisbury Cathedral (Cathedral of St. Mary). Your guide will also tell you how to find an original copy of the Magna Carta, long regarded as the first accepted standard for human rights. You’ll have free time to explore this town and enjoy a break for lunch before heading back to London in the late afternoon.

From Lambeth Bridge to Southwark, see where Diagon Alley was filmed and the location for the Ministry of Magic (and much more).
Warner Brothers Studio
This is where booking a guide really comes in handy for a Harry Potter day tour. You can hop in a vehicle and let your guide easily take you to the famous Warner Brothers Studio outside of the city. Make your Harry Potter tour in London easy by leaving the details to us so you can just enjoy a few hours exploring the Harry Potter sets and gift shop here.

You’ll leave mid-morning with a small group on this full-day tour of some of England’s most ancient sites near London. And after a long day, you can relax while your trusted driver takes care of the driving.
Silbury Hill and West Kennet
England has its own mysterious manmade mound that is roughly the size of an Egyptian pyramid. You’ll find it at Silbury Hill, where your guide will take you first thing. Plus, you’ll stop at West Kennet Long Barrow to see an ancient burial ground that probably dates back to the Neolithic period (about 5,000 years ago!). These areas have so much mystery that it’s essential to go with a guide who can help you understand the significance of what you’re seeing.
Did you know there are mysterious circles of stones in Avebury too? They’re not quite as impressive as Stonehenge, but there are still some great mysteries to see here. Avebury is a charming town with a haunted pub. Your guide will definitely tell you all about it and recommend you eat a late lunch there too.
After your free time in Avebury, your driver-guide will transport you to the highlight of this tour: Stonehenge. What’s extra special about this tour is that your tickets give you guided access to the Inner Circle of Stonehenge for an hour after the public has already left. It’s the perfect way to enjoy this monolith in solitude at the end of the day. Then you’ll head back to London and let your driver do the hard work.
- Visits to see Silbury Hill and West Kennet
- Free time in Avebury with lunch on your own
- Haunted pub tales
- Entry to Stonehenge after the public leaves

See London from above
If the sky’s the limit, hire your own capsule in the London Eye for two, or take a breathtaking ride in a helicopter and whizz above the Thames with London Helicopter.

More About London
From treasured landmarks to sipping afternoon tea, there is something for everyone in London. The Houses of Parliament with Big Ben, the giant clock and bell, on the banks of the Thames are the classic backdrop of London, with Westminster Abbey, the site of coronations and royal marriages, standing nearby. Enjoy panoramic views from Tower Bridge and visit the nearby Tower of London, with its rich history and the crown jewels of England. Speaking of royalty, catch the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace, the residence of the reigning monarchs. In central London, enjoy Trafalgar Square, the National Gallery, the British Museum, and St. Paul’s Cathedral. London also has a splendid array of markets to explore, like Covent Garden or Portobello Road on Notting Hill. And for evening entertainment, enjoy world-renowned theaters and lively clubs in London’s West End. With all this and more, the historic and vibrant European capital of London is an absolute must-see.

The heaviest tourist season runs mid-April through mid-October, with another peak around Christmas—though the tide never really ebbs. Spring is the time to see the countryside and the royal London parks and gardens at their freshest; fall to enjoy near-ideal exploring conditions. In late summer, be warned: air-conditioning is rarely found in places other than department stores, modern restaurants, hotels, and cinemas in London, and in a hot summer you'll swelter. Winter can be rather dismal, but all the theatres, concerts, and exhibitions go full speed.
It's virtually impossible to forecast London weather, but you can be fairly certain that it will not be what you expect. It's generally mild—with some savage exceptions, especially in summer. In short, be prepared for anything: layers and an umbrella are your friends.

Guide to Planning a Trip
There are so many different vacation packages to choose from when visiting England, let’s break it down and give you a few important things to consider!
Where to Visit? England, Scotland, Britain, UK, United Kingdom….
This can get confusing so let’s start out by getting a few things straight!
England is part of what is officially called The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland . That’s a very long name to keep using! So to make things a little easier, we’ll just call it the UK.
The UK is made up of 4 regions – England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland . And across the border from Northern Ireland lies the country of Ireland (which is totally independent from the UK.)
So the first question to ask when looking for an England vacation package. Are you looking just to visit England? Or do you also want to visit other parts of the United Kingdom as well?
There are a few ways to plan an England Vacation Package. You could visit:
100% England Packages (we’ve got plenty of amazing things to see here!)
England with Scotland Packages: Combine a trip and go to Scotland as well!
England, Scotland & Ireland Packages : The big trip! These vacation packages sometimes also include Northern Ireland as well. For this size of trip, we recommend packages that are at least 2 weeks long!
And what about Wales? Many of the vacation packages also include 1 or 2 days in Wales
So in this article, we’ll divide up our vacation packages into 4 – ‘100% England Packages’, ‘England & Scotland Packages’, ‘England & Ireland Packages’ & finally ‘Special Packages’
What are our special vacation packages ? Well… these are packages that are based around a specific theme or event. In 2024, we have the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in May and the Edinburgh Military Tattoo Parade in July.
Plus we’ve got some amazing vacation packages for Downton Abbey fans, Game of Thrones fans, Outlander fans, as well as some awesome walking trips, railway trips and even adventure trips!
That’s a lot of England vacation packages to sift through! So please use the contents at the top of the page to navigate directly to what interests you.
We hope you find this guide useful. Please contact the Tourist England team if you have any questions!
How much would a trip to England cost?
This really depends on the length of your vacation package and the size of the group. Prices can range anywhere from $1,800 per person for an 8 day trip in a large group to over $5,000 for a 14-day small-group tour of England.
How many days do you need in England?
We would say that at least 7 days is a good amount of time to explore many of the highlights of England and get a feel for the country. Of course, you could easily spend many more days exploring the best of England, Scotland and Ireland with our amazing vacation packages from London !
How Can I spend 10 days in the UK?
We have many package tours that are 10 days in duration. Typically these trips depart from London and you can expect to spend 7-8 days in England, with 2-3 days in Scotland. With these kinds of holidays, you will normally travel in a loop, travelling north from London along the east side of England, heading into Scotland and then returning to London via the west side of England, with a little bit of Wales as well. Regions you’ll visit include Yorkshire, the Lake District, Scotland and London.
Do these vacation packages include financing options?
Many of the packages offer financing options, allowing you to spread out the cost of the trip over multiple payments. Many of the tours also require a low-value deposit in order to secure your place on the tour.
Do all-inclusive vacations get cheaper closer to date?
Normally booking well in advance is a good way to get a great price on vacation deals, since travel companies like people to book early. Vacation packages will only get cheaper closer to the travel date if the travel company is struggling to fill up the tour.
Is there a package to London and Paris?
We have a 9-day London and Paris vacation package that’s perfect for you! Spend a few days in London before hopping over the English channel and spend some time exploring the French capital.
Do you have mini-vacation packages to England?
Yes, we also have a selection of multi-day tours from London that last 2-5 days, as well as Scotland minibreaks from Edinburgh . These are great options if you are looking to visit a lot of sights but are pressed for time.

How to travel to London with points and miles in 2024

What comes to mind when you think of London ? For me, it’s a mix of museums, historic sites and nerdy pop culture references that make fantastic photo-ops — it’s home to Abbey Road Studios, Harry Potter’s Platform 9¾ and a big, blue “Doctor Who” Tardis Police Box, after all.
While a trip to London can be expensive, it doesn’t necessarily have to be. Sticking to public transportation, checking out free museums and attractions and using points and miles to fly and stay there can make a huge difference.
There’s plenty to see and do, whether it’s your first trip to London , you’re visiting with kids , or you’re only in town for a quick city break. It’s also a great destination if you’re just getting started with points and miles .
Here’s everything you need to know about traveling to London with points and miles — plus some of our favorite things to do there .
How to get started with travel points and airline miles
The cheapest award flights to London
Don’t limit your search to just one London airport, as most nonstop flights from the U.S. arrive at Heathrow Airport (LHR) or Gatwick Airport (LGW).
Additional connections may be available via other European hubs or to smaller British airports like London City Airport (LCY), Luton Airport (LTN) or Stansted Airport (STN) from other parts of the continent.
You’ll also find the best nonstop deals from major U.S. airport hubs, so it might be worth doing a repositioning flight to New York (JFK), Dallas (DFW) or Los Angeles (LAX) if you live in a more remote part of the country.
- Cheapest economy class ticket to London: 20,000 Virgin Points round-trip (from the East Coast, off-peak season)
- Cheapest business-class ticket to London: 88,000 All Nippon Airways (ANA) Mileage Club miles round-trip
- Cheapest first-class ticket to London: 136,000 British Airways Avios round-trip (from the East Coast, off-peak season)
The best travel credit cards
American Airlines AAdvantage
While not the cheapest redemption, it’s one of the most straightforward, letting you fly nonstop to Heathrow Airport from 10 U.S. cities on American Airlines or any number of combinations via its Oneworld alliance partners.
Here’s how many AAdvantage miles you’ll need to fly on American Airlines:
- Economy Class: From 50,000 miles round-trip
- Business/First Class: From 125,000 miles round-trip
You can also use AAdvantage miles to fly with British Airways, though you’ll end up paying higher fuel surcharges than you would by flying on American.

How to make a travel budget using points and miles
British Airways Executive Club
While you can fly nonstop to Gatwick Airport from New York (JFK), Orlando (MCO) and Tampa (TPA), you’ll find wider award availability for Heathrow Airport, which offers direct routes from 21 U.S. cities.
British Airways uses a distance-based award chart , so plug in your desired airports on Great Circle Mapper’s website to calculate the mileage first.
Be aware that you’ll have to pay higher fuel surcharges on award flights, though you can avoid this by connecting via another European city — for instance, flying to Dublin via Aer Lingus or Madrid via Iberia, both partners, then redeeming Avios for a short flight to London from there (or vice versa).
Here’s how many Avios you’ll need round-trip from New York or Los Angeles, ranging from off-peak (fall and winter) to peak season (summer and during school holidays):
- Economy Class: 26,000 or 40,000 Avios from JFK; 39,000 or 60,000 Avios from LAX
- Business Class: 100,000 or 120,000 Avios from JFK; 150,000 or 180,000 Avios from LAX
- First Class: 136,000 or 160,000 Avios from JFK; 204,000 or 240,000 Avios from LAX
British Airways Avios can also be used to book flights with Oneworld partners like American Airlines. Here’s how many you’ll need to fly from JFK or LAX:
- Economy Class: 41,500 or 51,500 Avios round-trip
- Business Class: 124,000 or 154,500 Avios round-trip
- First Class: 165,000 or 206,000 Avios round-trip
To accrue British Airways Avios quickly, sign up for the airline’s cobranded credit card to take advantage of its welcome bonus. Otherwise, transfer points from Chase Ultimate Rewards, Bilt Rewards, Capital One Rewards or American Express Membership Rewards (1:1) or from Marriott Bonvoy (3:1).
- British Airways Visa Signature® Card : Limited time offer! Earn 75,000 Avios after you spend $5,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening. 5x Avios on up to $10k in gas, grocery stores, and dining purchases for the first 12 months!
- Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card : Earn 75,000 bonus miles after you spend $4,000 within the first three months of opening your account.
- Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card : Earn 75,000 bonus miles after you spend $4,000 within the first three months of opening your account.
- Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card : Earn 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. That's $750 when you redeem through Chase Travel℠.
- Chase Sapphire Reserve® : Earn 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. That's $900 toward travel when you redeem through Chase Travel℠.
- The Platinum Card® from American Express : Earn 80,000 bonus points after you spend $8,000 within the first six months of opening your account.
- The Business Platinum Card® from American Express : Earn 120,000 bonus points after spending $15,000 within the first three months of account opening.

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club
The trick here is to only use Virgin Points to pay for your flight to London and either book your return flight with another points-and-miles currency from this list or fly back to the U.S. from another European city to avoid the high fuel surcharges. While they might not be too bad for economy-class tickets, the cost can be astronomical for business- or first-class redemptions.
Check Virgin Atlantic’s rewards website for off-peak and peak season dates, which vary based on where and when you’re going.
Here’s how many Virgin Points you’ll need to fly from the East Coast, Midwest/South or West Coast:
- Economy Class: 20,000, 25,000 or 30,000 miles round-trip (off-peak); 40,000, 45,000 or 50,000 (peak)
- Business Class: 95,000 to 135,000 miles round-trip (off-peak); 115,000 to 155,000 (peak)
Virgin Points can also be used to fly with partners like Delta, which is still a decent deal despite a recent award devaluation , or Air France/KLM, among others.
Here’s how many Virgin Points you’ll need for a Delta flight from the East Coast, Midwest/South or West Coast:
- Economy Class: 30,000, 35,000 or 40,000 miles round-trip (off-peak); 50,000, 55,000 or 60,000 miles (peak)
- Business Class: 95,000 to 135,000 miles round-trip (off-peak); 115,000 to 155,000 miles (peak)
Virgin’s cobranded credit card offers a generous amount of points to start with. Points can also be transferred from Marriott Bonvoy (3:1) or Bilt Rewards, American Express Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Capital One Rewards or Citi ThankYou Rewards via Virgin Red (1:1).
- Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard®: Earn 30,000 bonus points after you spend $1,000 within the first 90 days of account opening.
- Citi Premier® Card: Earn 60,000 bonus miles once you spend $4,000 within the first three months of opening your account.
Air France / KLM Flying Blue
While you can’t fly nonstop from the U.S. to London aboard Air France or KLM, Flying Blue miles provide a decent one-stop option for award flights to the UK via Paris (CDG) or Amsterdam (AMS). They can also be redeemed for nonstop flights with SkyTeam alliance partners like Delta and Virgin Atlantic.
Check the Flying Blue Rewards website for Promo Awards and to calculate how many miles you’ll need for your award flight.
Here’s how many Flying Blue miles you’ll need to fly to London from the U.S.:
- Economy Class: 40,000 miles round-trip
- Business Class: 100,000 miles round-trip
To accrue Flying Blue miles quickly, transfer points from Marriott Bonvoy (3:1) or Bilt Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, American Express Membership Rewards, Citi ThankYou Rewards or Capital One Rewards (1:1).
The best credit cards for airline miles
All Nippon Airways (ANA) Mileage Club
Using ANA miles to book flights with Star Alliance partners like United, Air Canada, TAP Portugal, LOT Polish Airlines and SAS is a real points-and-miles sweet spot.
Note that while they can also be redeemed for flights with Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa or SWISS, the fuel surcharges tend to be much higher. Flying with United, rather, would mean redeeming more miles but paying fewer fees.
Keep in mind that only round-trip redemptions are allowed with ANA, and you can only book award flights for you and your family members. It’s easiest to search for award availability on United’s website and then confirm it with ANA.
Here’s how many ANA miles you’ll need to fly to London from the U.S.:
- Economy Class: 55,000 miles round-trip
- Business Class: 88,000 miles round-trip
- First Class: 165,000 miles round-trip
Racking up ANA miles is easy, as points can be transferred from Marriott Bonvoy (3:1) or American Express Membership Rewards (1:1).

Traveling to Europe using points and miles
Activities and ground transportation
Getting around London is super easy thanks to the sprawling London Underground, more commonly known as The Tube, and double-decker buses. Walking and cycling also make fun ways to explore the city, as does cruising down the Thames.
Cabs, mini-cabs and ride-share services are also widely available. For a real treat, try a licensed black cab — its drivers have spent three to five years training and testing to learn everything there is to know about London, so don’t be afraid to ask questions about the city’s best restaurants and sites.
The British capital is well connected to other parts of the UK by train — and even Paris and beyond via Eurostar — making your options for day trips from London seemingly endless. If you’re more of a road trip person, note that cars here are driven on the left side of the road (from the right side of the car) and the roads are fairly easy to navigate.
Chase Sapphire Preferred and Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders can check the Chase Travel℠ portal to save on car rentals and guided tours. Ultimate Rewards points are worth 1.25 cents per point or 1.5 cents per point, respectively, so you could save a decent amount.
Certain cards, like the Capital One Venture and Capital One Venture X , let you redeem miles toward recent travel purchases at a rate of one cent per mile. The Chase Sapphire Reserve also has a $300 annual travel credit meant to “erase” travel expenses.

The Ultimate Travel Guide for London in January (2024) — from a Londoner!
Table of Contents
Planning a trip to London in January? Here’s a list of all the things to consider when visiting the UK capital at the beginning of the year — from a local!
This post may contain affiliate links. Check out my Disclosure & Privacy Policy for more information.
If you’re ready to start the year like a star, I’d say a trip to London is the way to go.
From the winter charm on less busy streets to embracing the beauty of the city in the dark, visiting in January can be quite captivating.
So as post-holiday calm descends upon London, it’s your turn to discover this magnificent place and maybe ( just maybe) enjoy it like most people would never — under the snow!
A well-planned trip to London in January can make the difference between a bad experience and a great one. So let’s dive in to see what you need to consider, what the city has to offer and the best way to enjoy it, from a London travel blogger.
The Ultimate Travel Guide for London in January
Is January a Good Time to Visit London?
Visiting London in January comes with a unique blend of pros. The most important being that it’s less crowded compared to December.
January is basically the start of the off-peak tourist season , so it provides a more relaxed atmosphere in the capital for exploring its streets and attractions.
It’s also the time when many of the city’s theatres have shows in full swing, so theatre-lovers are in for a treat! And if you’re more of a shopper, then you’d be happy to know that tons of London shops and markets offer exciting post-Christmas sales.
Needless to say that it’s the perfect month to witness the London’s winter charm firsthand, with the possibility of snow adding a magical touch to the city’s iconic architecture.
However, there are some drawbacks to visiting in January as well. The most obvious being the freezing temperatures (when will it not be about the weather in my beloved London?).
Winter in London can be quite cold, with temperatures often dropping below what you’d consider ‘normal’. If you’re not a fan of cold weather, January’s chill might be off-putting. Although I’d say it’s always possible to combat it if you’re wearing the right things…more on that soon.
On the other side, daylight hours are significantly shorter in winter . Say goodbye to the traditional sunsets after 6 and hello to ‘evenings’ as early as 4 p.m.!
This may potentially reduce your site-seeing time with good lighting for photos, but definitely not your exploration of London. In fact, I think the city during dark times is as stunning if not more, and it’s definitely underrated!

So when it comes to visiting London in January, the city’s charm, post-holiday calm, and the unique experiences on offer tend to outweigh the cons, especially if you’re prepared for the cold. So you should definitely consider it!
London Weather in January
Alright, let’s not mess around. How cold is it actually in January?
I won’t sugarcoat it, friends. It gets a bit nippy. Not awful, not unbearable (if you follow my advice), but definitely cold ; particularly during the night and early mornings.
Temperatures typically range between minimum averages of 2°C (36°F) to maximum averages of 7°C (45°F). But the strong winds make it feel so much colder than it is.
Chart for January 2024 from AccuWeather
Rain is also quite common in London throughout the year, and January is no exception. The city averages about 15 days of rainfall in the first month of the year. However, it’s often light and drizzly rather than heavy. I’d say a waterproof coat, footwear and backpack or tote will have you sorted.
There is also reduced daylight in January, with daylight hours going from 8 hours at the beginning of the month to slightly over 9 hours towards the end of it.
What to Pack for London in January
Look, even though there are always tons of options to be indoors in London (free museums, anyone?), you’ll still want to stay outside. At the end of the day, there’s nothing like exploring the famous landmarks with a hot cocoa warming your hands.
So you definitely need to be winter-ready! Here’s my list of your absolute must when packing for the cold days you’re about to experience.
Winter Coat
This one’s going to be your armour and that’s why you need to pick correctly.
When you select your winter coat of preference (let’s be honest, you’re probably not packing several as you won’t want to travel like Daphne from Scooby Doo), you need to think of functionality, warmth and convenience.
Make sure it’s cosy, not so heavy (there’ll be a lot of walking!) and, if you can, enhanced with a good hood. That way, you’re also prepared for light rain!
Nothing screams “winter in London” more than this layer. It’s the perfect balance between warmth and style, and it’ll be perfect to adapt to your surroundings.
I personally opt for 2 contrasting colours, so that I can switch things up without carrying much. Like black and white or brown and blue.
Thermals & Fleece Tights
Being warm and layering up shouldn’t come at the cost of fashion. And a good neutral thermal can make the difference between you trying to rush to your hotel or staying out until the last pub closes. They’re ‘invisible’ and functional, so you won’t regret it.
Fleece tights, on the other hand, will make it possible for you to wear your amazing cold jeans without hating life! Or that sexy skirt you were planning to pair it with…
Extremely good-looking and very warm, they’re perfect for the weather and for looking good on your trip. Just make sure they’re comfortable!
Scarf, Gloves & Hats
We couldn’t finish our January in London packing list without the perfect accessories to protect you from the cold wind. Three words — scarf, gloves, hat.
Other Items
Roaming around London requires you to be savvy on what you bring and how you carry it. At the end of the day, you want to be comfortable but stylish, as you’re in one of the most gorgeous cities in the world! You definitely need to consider these accessories to enhance your experience:
- A small backback or a medium tote . Consider neutral colours to use with everything, light yet waterproof materials, and a good size to have some extra space for any souvenirs or snacks.
- A compact umbrella. Yes, London is known for its rain. However, make sure to check the weather before carrying it, as you might be okay if your coat has a good, sturdy hood.
- Lip balm and hand cream. It gets dry in here! So pay extra attention and care to your lips and hands, as they’ll need it.
- Portable charger. Believe me, your phone battery will die as London is just too pretty. Plus, no one lives without Google Maps or Citymapper ! Here’s the one I use .
- Power adapter. Don’t forget that the UK operates under different outlets. I suggest getting a Universal Adapter if you’re travelling in Europe too on your trip.
What to Wear for London in January
Layers, layers, layers.
As you probably assumed from the packing list above, a winter in London requires you to pick your warmest garments and place them one over the other in a very smart way.
That doesn’t mean you need to look like a Michelin Man! On the contrary, it just means you need to choose correctly and prepare for anything. Because, yes, the myth is true: London weather is crazy.
I like to start my outfit with a solid base of warm and functional thermals, both on top and below. Then, a cosy turtleneck and your trousers or skirt of choice. If you’d like something more fashionable, a sweater dress might be the way to go. Just make sure that second layer is as strong as the first one!
Fluffy socks are great for boots. And if you’d like to secure comfort during your time outdoors, then a scarf and gloves are a must. Hats are optional, although highly recommended.
That’s it! You’re perfect to be outside. You can take off your coat when in a heated beer garden. And you can be more than free inside a cosy pub.
The Best Things to do in January in London
London in January means more than just cold and festive leftovers. After reading all the things you can do this month, you’ll be eager to get on the plane (or train)!
Go Ice Skating
Whoever’s in London during the winter knows this is an activity you can’t miss. And luckily for you, the most popular are still open. Like the Somerset House Ice Rink until the 14th and the fun Canary Wharf Rink until February 24th! (P.S. – If you’re in Canary Wharf, make sure the Canary Wharf Winter Lights are on your list too!).
Shop London’s January sales
Many high-street shops in London start their sales immediately after Christmas and until the middle of January, so it’s your perfect opportunity to shop like royalty. Don’t miss the iconic Fortnum & Mason , the luxurious Harrods , the classic Liberty and the huge Selfridges .
Visit Hogwarts in the Snow
If you’re a Potterhead or a big film lover, you can’t miss a visit to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter with Transportation , where you’ll see the wizarding world with a truly magical makeover.
From the Christmas trees in the Great Hall, the return of the Yule Ball and the snow in the Forbidden Forest; to the absolute jewel in the crown, the Hogwarts scale model covered in snow. All until January 14th!
Take a winter stroll in London’s best green spaces
Parks in London look beyond beautiful during the winter, so you can’t miss them. You can enjoy a quiet morning while admiring nature or have a hot and delicious coffee after lunch. Besides, the options are endless ! My favourites for a winter stroll are Hyde Park and Hampstead Heath .
And of course…go to a pub!
London in January FAQs
➡️ Is January cold in London?
Oh, yes. January in London can be quite cold with average high temperatures around 7°C (45°F) and average lows around 2°C (36°F). But nothing that a good winter coat can’t fix!
➡️ Should I go to London in winter?
Yes, yes, yes! Look, it’s cold and wet and dark, but London during the winter is absolutely stunning with its Christmas lights, food and antique markets, and festive entertainment. Plus, pubs couldn’t be cosier any other time of the year.
➡️ Does London snow in January?
A popular question, and I understand why. The idea of appreciating London under the snow is appealing, however I’m afraid to say that it only snows very very occasionally.
The average amount of snowfall per year is around 5 to 10 cm (2-4 inches), but this is more frequent in the outer suburbs of the city. Even if it happens, it rarely stays on the ground for more than a day or two at a time. Here’s what to do when it snows in London just in case.
➡️ What is a must do in London in January?
Well, January is your last chance to engage in London’s festivities! So if you’re here early in the year, make sure you catch the last moments of the sparkling Christmas lights on Oxford Street or the last Christmas shows in the West End.
➡️ Is London busy in January?
You’d be happy to hear that London in January is indeed less crowded, so it’s an exceptional time to experience the capital!

Solar eclipse maps show 2024 totality path, peak times and how much of the eclipse you can see across the U.S.
By Aliza Chasan
Updated on: April 7, 2024 / 7:29 PM EDT / CBS News
A total solar eclipse crosses North America on April 8, 2024, with parts of 15 U.S. states within the path of totality. Maps show where and when astronomy fans can see the big event .
The total eclipse will first appear along Mexico's Pacific Coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT, then travel across a swath of the U.S., from Texas to Maine, and into Canada.
About 31.6 million people live in the path of totality , the area where the moon will fully block out the sun , according to NASA. The path will range between 108 and 122 miles wide. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path of totality.
Solar eclipse path of totality map for 2024
The total solar eclipse will start over the Pacific Ocean, and the first location in continental North America that will experience totality is Mexico's Pacific Coast, around 11:07 a.m. PDT on April 8, according to NASA. From there, the path will continue into Texas, crossing more than a dozen states before the eclipse enters Canada in southern Ontario. The eclipse will exit continental North America around 5:16 p.m. NDT from Newfoundland, Canada.
The path of totality includes the following states:
- Pennsylvania
- New Hampshire
Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse.
Several major cities across the U.S. are included in the eclipse's path of totality, while many others will see a partial eclipse. Here are some of the best major cities for eclipse viewing — if the weather cooperates :
- San Antonio, Texas (partially under the path)
- Austin, Texas
- Waco, Texas
- Dallas, Texas
- Little Rock, Arkansas
- Indianapolis, Indiana
- Dayton, Ohio
- Cleveland, Ohio
- Buffalo, New York
- Rochester, New York
- Syracuse, New York
- Burlington, Vermont
Map of when the solar eclipse will reach totality across the path
The eclipse will begin in the U.S. on the afternoon of April 8. It will first be visible as a partial eclipse beginning at 12:06 p.m. CDT near Eagle Pass, Texas, before progressing to totality by about 1:27 p.m. CDT and progressing along its path to the northeast over the next few hours.
NASA shared times for several cities in the path of totality across the U.S. You can also check your ZIP code on NASA's map to see when the eclipse will reach you if you're on, or near, the path of totality.
How much of the eclipse will you see if you live outside of the totality path?
While the April 8 eclipse will cover a wide swath of the U.S., outside the path of totality observers may spot a partial eclipse, where the moon covers some, but not all, of the sun, according to NASA. The closer you are to the path of totality, the larger the portion of the sun that will be hidden.
NASA allows viewers to input a ZIP code and see how much of the sun will be covered in their location.
Could there be cloud cover be during the solar eclipse?
Some areas along the path of totality have a higher likelihood of cloud cover that could interfere with viewing the eclipse. Here is a map showing the historical trends in cloud cover this time of year.
You can check the latest forecast for your location with our partners at The Weather Channel .
Where will the solar eclipse reach totality for the longest?
Eclipse viewers near Torreón, Mexico, will get to experience totality for the longest. Totality there will last 4 minutes, 28 seconds, according to NASA.
Most places along the centerline of the path of totality will see a totality duration between 3.5 and 4 minutes long, according to NASA. Some places in the U.S. come close to the maximum; Kerrville, Texas, will have a totality duration of 4 minutes, 24 seconds.
What is the path of totality for the 2044 solar eclipse?
After the April 8 eclipse, the next total solar eclipse that will be visible from the contiguous U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044.
Astronomy fans in the U.S. will have far fewer opportunities to see the 2044 eclipse than the upcoming one on April 8. NASA has not yet made maps available for the 2044 eclipse, but, according to The Planetary Society , the path of totality will only touch three states.
The 2024 eclipse will start in Greenland, pass over Canada and end as the sun sets in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota, according to the Planetary Society.
