What our adventurers say

michele sutliff

Our tours are perfect for groups too...

Hi Bernie and Chris, When it comes to customer service and communication l can’t thank you enough for ALL of your support and l can say we had nothing but fun in the sun. From your preparation and very interactive care factor on day 1 we felt well looked after. Contacting us daily and ensuring we knew what we were doing came as a blessing because my dad, 78 years old and I’m certainly not the most in shape cyclist, we certainly had a well-rounded, organised and fun filled ride with each other thanks to you and your Team. Memories that will last a lifetime.    Accommodation and scenery on our journey was well and truly past my expectations. We both cannot thank you enough and still talk about how well we were treated. Bernie, if only l had 30 more staff members of your passion and commitment in my business. Truly inspiring and such a pleasure to have met you. Epic!!! Such a life changing experience to have done this with my father but could not thank you enough for your efforts.Chur/Thanks Aaron and Doug

  • 561lesleyh 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Well organised and fun We did the 6 day "Loop the Loop' tour which covered the whole 200K Great Taste Trail and an extra day in Mapua (definitely recommend this extra day to explore this area and have a lovely winery lunch at one of the great venues in the area) This was a most fabulous tour and so well organised by the Gentle Cycle Company. The trip notes provided were excellent with lots of suggestions re where to stop to coffee/lunch etc and the accommodation booked for us at the end of each day was well chosen - very comfortable, clean and often quirky! Every night, Bernie checked in with us to make sure we had arrived safely and were happy with everything. The E bikes were brand new and perfect for the terrain. We loved everything about this trip from start to finish. We will be doing more tours in NZ thats for sure. Read more Written March 10, 2024
  • Nomad04618299278 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles The Tuscan Tour...best cycling day possible! To say that I surprised myself today is something of an understatement! Having not ridden a bike in years and being only mildly fit, I happily managed over 30kms of terrain and I am still smiling! WHAT A DAY!!! The weather was superb and cycling was glorious. We also enjoyed an amazing brunch in the shadey gardens at 'The Grape Escape Cafe' in Nelson and a yummy home-made fruit ice-cream in downtown Mapua. Chris, the owner and main operator at Gentle Cycling, prepared us for a super successful day out. This started with him picking us up from our accomodation. Back at base, and the beginning of our ride, our strudy steeds were all ready to go. Chris armed us with all the necessary information, including maps, great tips and specific advice to ensure our safety and success. It struck me how passionate Chris was about ensuring our experience would be the best one for us. He willingly customised the tour information to suit our preferences. Although we were on the Tuscan Tour, we decided not to focus on wine this time, and that was fine too! Note that your day can be completely tailored to your interests, carefully planned or equally left open, as you choose. If you're not sure, following Chris's suggestions is the way to go! No matter what, you will feel super safe and relaxed with the preparation Chris puts in to ensure you have a great day. The 'Tuscan Tour' we booked, took us along the well marked 'Taste Trail' and through Rabbit Island to beautiful Mapua. The crossing on the Mapua Ferry was a well appreciated rest before discovering the delights of Mapua. The vistas around Mapua, looking across the water to the mountains, were sublime. The countryside of gentle fertile hills, is dotted with wonderful galleries, wineries and historical points of interest. A highlight was our visit to the timber toys gallery and shop. The cycling is very doable for all levels of riders and the bikes are second to none. And to top it off, Chris picks you up wherever you decide to finish your ride. We ended at the Somerset Farm Historic Cottage and had the most comfortable and chatty trip back to our accomodation. Thank you Chris and Gentle Cycling Company for a most magnificent day. • 45lucye 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great bikes - friendly service We stayed in Monaco which was a little away from gentles base, but their service was above and beyond. The bikes were dropped to us in the early morning with a friendly greeting Bernie came with all we needed for the day. Their local map was great, we stopped at a nearby cafe to plan our day, dropped into pics peanut butter (be sure to pre book tours - we got lucky as someone had cancelled) and then had lunch and tastings at a winery for lunch. Their easy voucher system meant we could wine taste at two places - and grab the ferry to Māpua were we spent an hour at the brewery and rui wine bar (one of their stops). The bikes were in great condition and Chris picked us up in the arvo. For two non regular bike riding individuals the track was flat and easy going, having lots of stops made it an enjoyable day. • Curious9072 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Richmond to Mapua family ride Bernadette and Chris could not have been more helpful. They accommodated our changing plans the week prior and updated arrangements efficiently, not even requiring a deposit. All shapes and sizes, we were supplied well fitted bikes delivered to the Richmond Aquatic Centre car park and cycled through to the Rabbit Island ferry link to Mapua. The Waimea estuary ride at high tide is particularly uplifting. Thank you so much Bernie and Chris, dealing with us mainly online or by phone. If you are at the Tahunanui camping ground it would be so very easy to sort a cycle trip at their prefab there and make amazing memories on the Nelson cycleways for a very reasonable outlay. 2024 Could Be a Make-Or-Break Year for the Tour de France Femmes

Amidst sponsorship concerns and viewing challenges, we’ve reached a critical juncture for the race in its third year.

2nd tour de france femmes 2023 stage 7

If there’s one depressing fact I’ve learned in nearly two decades of covering women’s cycling, it’s that, sadly, there’s rarely a moment to rest on one’s laurels in this sport—and that’s particularly true for race organizers, and team owners.

Just because a race does fantastically well one year in terms of unprecedented levels of viewership and media coverage or because a team is arguably the absolute best in the world doesn’t guarantee anything. It’s all easy come, easy go. That’s why I’m nervous about the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift and why I believe that this year could be the most pivotal year for the race.

But why am I worried about the Tour de France Femmes in year three? After all, viewership numbers have been high, enthusiasm hasn’t waned, and sports bars are full of fans screaming for Demi Vollering and Kasia Niewiadoma. And yet... There are a few important factors to consider.

“There’s no kind of resting on the fact that last year was really successful,” Veronneau said then. “I look at it and think, ‘Last year was pretty easy sell: It was the first women’s Tour de France in over 30 years. That was easy to get the media on board, easy to get sponsors on board. It was the first time that that huge of an audience watched women’s racing.”

Year two was hugely successful, but what about year three?

The sponsorship dynamics at play

First, there’s the simple fact that this is year three of Zwift’s four-year commitment to the Tour de France Femmes in partnership with ASO. That means if Zwift isn’t planning to continue its support or is going to cut back its sponsorship budget, this is the year the race needs to look for a new sponsor.

Leaving it entirely to next year, the final year in their contract, is foolhardy. So I have to imagine that there’s some buzz happening behind the scenes already. I haven’t heard any scuttlebutt about them giving up their title sponsorship position, to be clear, but considering Zwift just had a round of layoffs and a shuffle in their C-suite , who knows where they’re heading? Hopefully into another lengthy contract, but it’s unclear. My fingers are crossed.

Viewership challenges

Viewership this year will also be more important than ever. High viewership numbers mean a better chance of securing new or renewed sponsorship dollars, and TdFF viewership has been undeniably impressive. But this year is going to make that tricky. The men’s Tour de France and the Tour de France Femmes are separated this year by the Olympics. That means three weeks between the races, rather than the men’s race ending on the day the women’s race began.

In the past two years, it was easy to just continue tuning in if you’d been watching the men’s race. This year, viewers will have to actively seek it out starting August 12—the day after the Olympics finish. That is a lot of TV watching for cycling/sports fans to contend with. While serious fans will still tune in, those ‘medium’ fans may not.

The state of the cycling industry

Then, there’s the cycling industry landscape. Brands like Trek and Specialized are slashing budgets , and Shimano is reporting quarter after quarter of losses . To blithely assume that there’s a cycling company capable of taking Zwift’s place as title sponsor in the current landscape is a mistake.

I say all this not to be discouraging. It’s meant to be a rallying cry. What does this all mean for you, the person reading this?

I want to believe that this race will survive and thrive in the same way that Le Tour has for over a century. But I also know that it takes more than love to keep a race of this magnitude running. It takes cold, hard cash. It takes commitment from big businesses that often see women’s cycling as a line item that they can scrap when it’s time to tighten up their belts. It took decades to get back to a point where we have this race. It’s happened before, it’s been lost before. Let’s not let it happen again.

It’s time to get fired up and ensure that the Tour de France Femmes isn’t just a blip in the cycling history books. Mark your calendars, set a Google alert for the Tour de France Femmes, follow racers on social media, and plan watch parties—let’s make this the loudest Tour de France Femmes yet.

Great Taste Trail

cycle tours nelson

“This trail rivals any European cycle tour”

NEP_08.jpg

The Great Taste Trail is made up of three stunning sections. The Rail route, Coastal route and Valley route offer beautiful and varied experiences of the Nelson and Tasman Region. Tastes are often associated with food, but on the Great Taste Trail the taste comes in many ways, shapes and forms.

Total Distance

Need to know more? We have curated a detailed, interactive map with all of the features and highlights of the Great Taste Trail.

The Coastal Route

This sextion of the trail takes in stunning coastal scenery from Nelson and across rolling hills to Kaiteriteri on the edge of the edge of the beautiful Abel Tasman National Park.

Get your first taste of the expansive Waimea Inlet as you travel along the Nelson waterfront. A sign pointing you towards the Mapua Ferry is just the start, as you turn towards Tasman.

Travel along raised pathways above the tidal shallows of the Waimea Inlet. The Waimea River Swing Bridge takes you towards Moturoa Rabbit Island. Cruise along the beachfront or take the more inland Faulkners Track on your way to the Mapua Channel. From here, the ferry will transfer you across to Mapua Wharf, a beautiful village full of artisanal shops, world class food and drink, and a celebration of the history of the area.

The Trail continues along Ruby Bay towards Tasman Village, where you head slightly inland and up along the ridgeline on Tasman View Road. You will be treated to panoramic views of the Waimea Plains as you meander down to Lower Moutere and around the outskirts of Motueka. The next leg takes you through Riwaka, along the hillside and through the Easy Rider trail of the Mountain Bike Park, before arriving at the golden sands of Kaiteriteri Beach.

The Valley Route

Following the beautiful Motueka River inland, you will experience some of the most remote sections of the great taste trail. From Riwaka, you will travel along the Motueka Valley to Woodstock, right on the edge of the Kahurangi Regional Park. Take in the twists and turns of Motueka River as you travel this remote part of the region.

From Woodstock, you turn to follow the Baton River, crossing the purpose built swing bridge before climbing up to the Baton Saddle. At the Saddle you will be rewarded with views up and down the valley, to both reward your efforts and entice you further on.

As you swoop down the valley and turn Towards Tapawera, you will see the traditional sheep and dairy farms, along with the unique hop and berry farms that the town is known for. Tapawera is a great place to stop for a beer and chips at the pub, a fuel up at the Four Square, or a Coffee at the Cafe.

The Great Taste Trail continues through reserves alongside the main road, through Kohatu, before linking up with Spooners Tunnel.

The Rail Route

Following the old railway line from Spooners Tunnel into Central Nelson, this section of the trail is steeped in history.

Start by riding through the Spooner tunnel, which at 1352m long is the longest disused rail tunnel in the southern hemisphere. Cruise down the valley to Belgrove and you will pass one of the few remaining railway windmills on your way to Wakefield, where you will find a wonderful town center to break and enjoy some local treats of stop for a lunch.

The rest of this section takes you slightly downhill, following the base of the Richmond hills and through the vineyards of Waimea Plains. Be sure to stop at the birthplace of Sir Ernest Rutherford in Brightwater on your way to crossing the Wairoa River.

From here, you will cruise along the plains on your final approach into Nelson.

Enrich your journey around the Great Taste Trail and immerse yourself in the local history through informative panels and signage. Some parts of the trail are surprisingly recent, with some features steeped in history.

Nelson is known for plentiful sunshine hours, exquisite food, award winning wineries, craft beer culture, Abel Tasman National Park, and its breath-taking scenery. With that in mind, the Great Taste Trail rivals any European Cycle tour.

Tadej Pogacar signals for a fourth win of this year’s race at the finish line in Barcelona

Tadej Pogacar wins final stage to round off Volta a Catalunya dominance

  • Slovenian makes it four victories from race’s seven stages
  • Mikel Landa second overall, almost four minutes down

Tadej Pogacar completed his mastery of this year’s Volta a Catalunya, sprinting to a fourth stage win in the seven-stage race.

The Slovenian, already in total command of the Volta going into the final stage around Barcelona, left his rivals in a reduced bunch trailing once again, giving him overall victory ahead of Mikel Landa (Soudal Quick-Step) by three minutes and 41 seconds. Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers), five minutes and three seconds down, finished third.

Dorian Godon of France came closest on the line to denying the UAE Team Emirates rider, but he had to settle for second with compatriot Guillaume Martin third. Pogacar’s dominance was such that, along with topping the general classification, he also secured the points and mountains jerseys too.

“João Almeida set a good pace on the climb and we were a small group in the front,” said Pogacar afterwards. “He made a good attack on the last small climb and almost came to the finish. I wish he could arrive but I’m happy to take this win, too.”

Meanwhile, Mads Pedersen got the better of Mathieu van der Poel in a punishing final sprint to win Gent-Wevelgem in Belgium. The pair headed towards the finish together, with the Dane leading out and holding off Van der Poel’s surge in thrilling fashion.
