17 Accredited Drive Through Zoos and Safaris in the U.S.

After years of traveling around the United States, both with my family and without, I have run across many drive through zoos, safari parks, and wildlife preserves. As traditional zoos have transitioned to animal conservation and education over entertainment, there has been a shift to larger, more natural animal habitats and enclosures. The nice thing about drive through safaris and zoos is that most have acres and acres of land for animals to roam in a much more natural setting.

I constantly struggle with the benefits of zoos versus the negative impacts of keeping animals in captivity. Although I know many have different views, I see many benefits of these safari and wildlife parks from seeing the simple joy on a child’s face when they see an animal in person that inspires a lifelong interest in animal preservation, to the important research that these parks provide in understanding animal behavior and saving them from extinction.

That said, I do think we need to be careful about which establishments we support, which is why I have included only the zoos and safari parks that are accredited members of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums or the Zoological Association of America .

Drive Through Zoos & Safaris

I have intentionally left out a few safari parks, even ones that I have visited because greater research showed that they weren’t accredited by one of those two widely recognized organizations. (I found this article helpful in understanding the different types of accreditation and what it means.)

As of this writing, this list is only of drive through zoos and safaris that are accredited AZA or ZAA establishments or overseen by government wildlife entities. I have included drive through safaris and wildlife parks where you can either self-drive your own vehicle or take a safari tour or safari ride through the animal habitats.

Lion Country Safari, Loxahatchee, Florida

Rhino at Lion Country Safari

Animals from six different continents can be found at Lion Country Safari, including lions, white rhinos, chimpanzees, zebras, giraffes, and more.

After taking a scenic drive through the preserve, guests can enjoy the rides and attractions at Safari World. These include a boat ride on the Safari Queen, a paddleboat, miniature golf, a carousel, a Flying Elephant ride, and the Rio Grande Train. Safari World also includes Safari Plunge water slides, so guests can really make a day of their visit.

They will open it as soon as it is safe to drive through again. The zebra-striped vehicles are the safari wardens and supervisors. They are the ones caring for the animals and making sure everyone is following the rules. If you need assistance please flag one of them down. Please note: due to traffic or the individual species, not all animals may be seen.

Of course, the best part is you’ll stay comfortable within your car — and the adrenaline rush won’t cost you much. Six Flag’s Safari Adventure is included in your theme park admission! Virginia Safari Park is the only of its kind in the state! Families who embark on this drive-through safari adventure will be fully immersed in Virginia’s natural environment, as hundreds of animals frolic across this 180-acre property. In fact, this safari animal park is entirely focused on a laid-back philosophy, letting animals roam free to follow their instincts. Drive your vehicle over three miles of gravel road set against the gorgeous Blue Ridge Mountains in the Shenandoah Valley. Along the way, appreciate elks gazing, gazelles prancing by your windows, and even the occasional zebra sighting. Take as much time as you want to explore and feed the animals through your windows!

Virginia Safari Park , one of the best drive-through safari parks on the East Coast , also showcases additional chances to tour its property! Take a wagon ride around the park to receive a behind-the-scenes tour. Or, enjoy the Safari Village Walk-Thru Area , where kids can spot tigers, kangaroos, and penguins, and even feed an 18-foot tall giraffe! There’s also an aviary highlighting various bird species native to the area, as well as a Petting Zoo for little ones to interact with animals up close. Pet pot-bellied pigs, chickens, baby llamas, and all your barnyard favorites!

Located within Disney’s Animal Kingdom , this attraction allows families to explore the Harambe Wildlife Reserve through an open-air vehicle. Though only twenty minutes, Kilimanjaro is a fantastic break from the theme-park chaos, particularly for the educational value you’ll receive from the expert tour guide. Spot African lions, giraffes, elephants, cheetahs, and so many more amazing photo opportunities on this unique visit to Disney World !

Luckily, outdoor fun doesn’t have to stop there at this safari animal park ! Disney World’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park , one of the best drive-through safari parks near Orlando , offers families anything from rainforest adventure rides to character-led animal performances, and a Conservation Station featuring real fossils! To see the Harambe Wildlife Reserve from a different vantage point by night, you can also take an After-Dark Safari Tour ! Pine Mountain, Georgia

A hand feeds a horse out a car window at the Pine Mountain Wild Animal Safari, one of the best East Coast Safaris for Families.

Pine Mountain Wild Animal Safari was designed with little ones in mind! This affordable park is especially appealing to children aged three to twelve, helping growing imaginations develop a lifelong love of animals and nature. Arrive early to ensure you have plenty of time to tour the park at your own pace (and a few dollars to buy some regulated treats to feed the cuddly creatures!). Along the 3.5-mile drive, families will have endless opportunities to encounter hundreds of exotic animals, including many who will approach your car directly to say hello! Feed a giraffe, watch water buffalo roam free, and also come face-to-face with a slobbering camel. Visitors of all ages always leave here with wide grins to remember the experience!

Pine Mountain Wild Animal Safari offers various attractions included in its admission ticket. If you don’t want to dirty your own car, for example, take a complimentary bus tour led by an entertaining guide. Or, rent one of the popular Zebra vans to drive through at your leisure! Many contributors recommend the rental van to avoid car scratches, as many animals will be coming right up to your vehicle. As an alternative to the drive-in experience, Pine Mountain also offers a walk-about area, where you can spot Bengal tigers, peacocks, and more while stretching your legs! With so much to offer, this is truly one of the best drive-through safari parks on the East Coast for kids.

Lion Country Safari

Palm Beach County, Florida

Several lions lounge on the grass at the Lion Country Safari, one of the best East Coast Safaris for Families.

Lion Country Safari is a one-of-a-kind Florida experience! Featuring a drive-through and walk-in safari, a group of entrepreneurs developed it to bring an authentic African experience to the U.S. South Florida was the perfect location because of the warm climate and plentiful land! Luckily, families can still enjoy their fruitful idea today, whether on foot or in a vehicle. In the spirit of Lion Country Safari being the first U.S. drive-through safari, however, definitely tour the preserve via car first! Split into sections like Gir Forest and Las Pampas; the park is home to various wildlife visible from your window. Kids can spot African lions, ostriches, wildebeests, and more as you traverse through 600 acres of almost 1,000 animals.

Or, experience the walk-through SafariWorld by feeding some giraffes, petting a goat, or strolling the aviary!

5 Unforgettable Connecticut Scenic Drives To Experience

' data-src=

Compared to other states in New England, Connecticut is relatively small. However, what it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in breathtaking views, unique experiences, and some of the best New England scenic drives year-round.

You can experience some of the most beautiful scenic drives in Connecticut in the span of a few hours, though there are often many enticing places to stop along the way.

Whether you’re interested in ziplining, sampling fresh produce, golfing, fishing, or more, you’ll find all of these (and more) on the best scenic drives in Connecticut.

Connecticut Scenic Drives You Need to Try

USA Connecticut Scenic Drives map

Connecticut Scenic Drives: South Litchfield Hills (CT-272 N, US-44 W, and US-7 S)

  • Distance: 52.8 miles
  • Time needed: 1 hour 15 minutes direct to 1 full day

Litchfield Hills is one of the best scenic drives in Connecticut, and there is plenty to see and do along the way. You can choose to take many routes, but we like the drive from Litchfield to Kent the best.  You’ll take CT-272 N from Litchfield to Norfolk before reaching North Canaan. From there, take US-7 S until you conclude your drive in Kent.

USA Connecticut Scenic Drives - Lichfield Hills

There are plenty of stunning roadside views along these back roads in Connecticut, especially during the fall. Visit the Action Wildlife Foundation near Goshen, where you can experience a drive-thru safari to get up close and personal with over 350 exotic animals. Children will love the petting zoo, and the foundation also gives hayrides in the fall.

Next, browse the unique specialty shops in downtown Torrington or take in the breathtaking scenery at Stillwater Pond State Park. Then travel to Norfolk and climb Haystack Mountain to get to the tower, where you get an unforgettable view of Vermont’s Berkshires and the Green Mountains.

Pro Tip: If you’re not an experienced hiker, it will likely take you 30-45 minutes to walk the half-mile trail to the top of Haystack Mountain .

And lastly, be sure to stop at Bull’s Bridge on your way to Kent. This historic bridge crosses the Housatonic River and is a great place to pause for a photo opportunity.

USA Connecticut Scenic Drives - Bulls Bridge

When to Go: Enjoy this scenic Connecticut drive year-round, although some attractions may not be open during the winter months.

Connecticut Scenic Drives: Merritt Parkway (CT-15 S)

  • Distance: 41 miles
  • Time needed: 40 minutes direct to 1 full day

If you’re planning a Connecticut road trip to New York , enjoy the pastoral route by taking Merritt Parkway. Not only is this one of the most beautiful roads in the state, but it’s also one of the few roads to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Best of all, you don’t have to worry about semi-trucks, and it’s a less hectic alternative to I-95.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the Merritt Parkway is the 69 Art Moderne and Art Deco-style bridges motorists can enjoy along the way from Milford to Greenwich, CT. Perhaps this is why one historian described Merrit Parkway as “one of the most beautiful and best-engineered highways of the time.” No two bridges along the route are alike, and only three have been replaced in over 50 years.

USA Connecticut Scenic Drives - Merritt Parkway

Merrit Parkway provides easy access to several interesting stops along the way, such as Boothe Memorial Park and Museum near the northern end of the route in Stratford. This sprawling 32-acre property has lush rose and wedding gardens, a miniature lighthouse, a clock tower museum, and much more.

You can also take exit 37 off Merrit Parkway to visit New Canaan Nature Center , where you can hike the trails, drink fresh apple cider, and explore the Discovery Center.

When to Go: Although you can take Merrit Parkway year-round, it is lovely during the warmer months when you can see the bridges more clearly.

Connecticut Scenic Drives: Connecticut River Loop (CT-9 S, CT-156 W, and CT-154 S)

  • Distance: 32 miles
  • Time needed: 50 minutes direct to 1 full day

This historic scenic drive takes you through some of the most beautiful places in Connecticut and around a portion of the Connecticut River. Begin your journey in the iconic New England town of Essex and travel to Lyme via CT-9 S and CT-156 W before concluding your drive back in Essex.

Both Essex and Lyme have many boutiques and antique shops filled with treasures waiting to be discovered, and there are also many stately historic buildings to see along the way. Take in both art and architecture at the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme and enjoy a sweet treat at the Old Lyme Ice Cream Shoppe and Cafe.

The Connecticut River Loop also winds its way through several state parks, including Ferry Landing State Park. This tiny seaside area is perfect for a photo opportunity or two, and there is also a walking trail along the shoreline.

USA Connecticut Scenic Drives - Gillette Castle

Another popular stop along the Loop is Gillette Castle State Park . This 124-acre estate features a medieval-style castle designed by the late actor William Hooker Gillette. If you take a tour of the castle’s interior, you’ll be surprised!

Pro Tip: If you have children, stop by Ray of Light Farm in East Haddam. They can feed the goats and lambs without needing to make a reservation!

When to Go: You can travel the Connecticut River Loop year-round.

Connecticut Scenic Drives: Connecticut State Route 169 (State Highway 169)

  • Time needed: 1 hour direct to 1 full day

Explore the back roads in Connecticut with a drive along State Route 169 . This one-hour drive is filled with lush green trees, peaceful winding roads, and many photo opportunities of rolling hills, quaint towns, and historic sites along the way.

Begin your drive on this two-lane country road at the Massachusetts border and conclude at Lisbon.

Make your first stop in Woodstock to visit Roseland Cottage, an eye-catching historic home that now operates as a museum. This Gothic Revival summer home is a sight to behold, and it even has an indoor bowling alley and a spectacular garden on the grounds. Before leaving Woodstock, be sure to savor a piece of gourmet pizza at Sweet Evalina’s Stand , voted Best Hidden Gem by Connecticut Magazine .

USA Connecticut Scenic Drives - Roseland Cottage

If antiquing is more your thing, stop at Scranton’s Shops in South Woodstock to find your next hidden treasure. Continue on to Lapsley Orchards in Pomfret, where you can enjoy fresh seasonal produce and fun activities through the fall.

Finally, stop to hike in Mashamoquet Brook State Park, an area rich in both history and beauty. Catch a glimpse of the fabled Wolf Den and marvel at Table Rock and Indian Chair, a few of the park’s natural rock formations.

When to Go: You can make this scenic drive in CT at any time of year, but the fall foliage is particularly breathtaking in autumn .

Connecticut Scenic Drives: Connecticut Coast Scenic Drive (I-95 S)

  • Distance: 108 miles
  • Time needed: 1 hour 55 minutes direct to 2 days

Your time in Connecticut wouldn’t be complete without taking the Connecticut Coast Scenic Drive from Stonington to Greenwich. You’ll wind your way down the coast, stopping at quaint seaside villages along the way and breathing in the brisk sea air. You’ll drive through all types of terrain, and there are many picture-perfect views you won’t want to miss.

Take some time to explore Stonington before embarking on your journey down coastal Connecticut. There are many exciting shops and restaurants, but the Stonington Lighthouse Museum is a true treasure. Climb the lighthouse tower and take in a breathtaking view of Long Island Sound, Rhode Island , and New York .

Pro Tip: If you’d like to visit the lighthouse, make sure you do so before October 15th

USA Boston Day Trips - Mystic Connecticut

Spend a few hours (or the day) in Mystic, where you can visit the Mystic Aquarium, explore the Mystic Seaport Museum, snap pictures of the Mystic Drawbridge, and enjoy some outdoor fun at TreeTrails Adventures . Finally, sit down to a delicious meal at any one of Mystic’s fine restaurants.

There are many sandy beaches and seaside escapes along this Connecticut road trip, so don’t be afraid to stop and bury your toes in the sand. The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk is also a fascinating attraction, and there are several special exhibits open to the public over the summer months.

Norwalk is also home to the Stepping Stones Museum for Children , which is full of interactive exhibits for kids of all ages.

When to Go: Although the Connecticut Coast is beautiful in winter, we recommend driving between spring and fall to take full advantage of the many seasonal attractions.

Safari Drive-Thru

The Virginia Safari Park, located in Natural Bridge, offers visitors the opportunity to see and feed animals up-close from their vehicles in the safari drive-thru attraction.

drive through safari new england

The Virginia Safari Park opened in the spring of 2000 because we felt there was a need and desire for people to be able to see wild animals in a much more natural environment than had previously been available.

In the Safari, you'll be able to see animals run and frolic with abandon on our 180-acre property. Take your time as you drive along the three miles of maintained gravel road. Feed the animals through your vehicle windows and be prepared to stop for them as they stroll across your path or even lie down.

Our animals are allowed to roam freely and act instinctively. This means you might see males competing with each other for the females’ attention, resulting in cute baby animals being born throughout the season. You could be among the lucky visitors who witness a live birth and the first steps of the newborn.

Feed the Animals

As you make your way along the road in the Blue Ridge Mountains in the Shenandoah Valley, stop every once in a while to feed the animals our specialty grain mixture.

You’ll never forget the experience of one of our huge bull elk or deer eating from your bucket of feed. Drive through as many times as you like to give everyone in your group a chance to have a memorable encounter like this.

5-mile safari drive

The uk's longest safari drive.

Our 550-acre Safari Drive is home to many animals from around the world. From Bactrian Camels and White Rhino to Baboons and African Lions, you can see them all as you drive around the grounds. The route is split into different continental zones where you’ll drive through many habitats and see our collection of animals along the way. Once you’ve finished your roar-some experience, you can head down to our Foot Safari - both experiences are included in your ticket!

Your adventure begins in Eastern Asia where you’ll meet our herd of Bactrian Camels whose coat sheds throughout the year, and lots of Yaks, Eastern Kiang and Père David’s Deer roaming around. In the Southern Asia area, you’ll find the Axis Deer and Eld’s Deer as well as Nilgai and Blackbuck.

Our African Savannah zone is home to one of the largest White Rhino crashes in the UK. Watch out for the world’s largest bird too, the Ostrich, as they love to come over and say hello! Can you spot the distinct markings on the Roan Antelope or the short pointed horns of the Waterbuck? Whilst driving through the African woodland, keep your eyes peeled for the Sitatunga too.

Dare to enter the monkey jungle? The most anticipated area of the Safari Drive. Hold on to your seatbelts as our Baboons steal the show. They’ll come right up to your car so, if you’d prefer, our car-friendly route will allow you to watch from afar. If you still want the full mischievous experience, why not book the Baboon Bus?

African Lions

Our Safari Drive takes you through Lion Country, allowing you to watch the pride without a fence between them and your vehicle!

African Lions

White Rhino

White Rhino are one of the most endangered animals on the planet. They are often hunted for their horn.

Warning infographic incase of a breakdown

It's important to us that our guests and animals stay safe so we ask all guests to follow our rules of entry. Our animals behave as close to the wild as possible and can be unpredictable, so you should stay inside your car at all times. If you break down while on the safari drive it is important that all passengers stay within the car, you should sound your horn and wait for a patrol vehicle to come to your assistance.

Our safari drive is full of wild animals who can act unpredictably at times and we are not able to accept any responsibility for damage caused by our baboons within their enclosure. If you would prefer not to take this risk then why not take our car-friendly route or even hop on our Baboon Bus.

Guests are strictly prohibited from feeding the animals – that’s our job! If you are seen feeding the animals from your vehicle you will be asked to leave.

Dogs are not allowed in any areas of Knowsley Safari. This includes both the Safari Drive and also the pedestrian areas of the Foot Safari.

We do however provide basic accommodation for your dog should you wish to bring them on your trip.

Our kennels provide basic accommodation for your pet. Drinking water is available but we do not provide water bowls or blankets. Please feel free to bring with you any items that will make your pet as comfortable as possible. A £5.00 refundable padlock is available at reception on arrival.

We are famous for our drive-through Baboon enclosure but did you know that you can watch their antics from a safe distance if you’re not quite brave enough to venture in? You can take our car-friendly route which still gives you fantastic views of our cheeky residents.

If you fancy the thrill of the Baboons without any of the risk then try our baboon bus. You can book your seats online and you’ll be driven the whole way round the safari as well as through the baboon enclosure.

What’s new at the Six Flags Great Adventure Drive Thru Safari?

Similar to 2022, there are new animals to see and new enhancements to the Six Flags Safari.

New animals at the Six Flags Great Adventure Drive Thru Safari

Here’s what guests visiting the drive thru safari this spring can expect to see.

Five Stunning Siberian Tiger Cubs

  • Five Siberian tiger cubs turn one-year old in May and will be introduced to an exhibit in a new area of the safari.

Young Animal Additions

  • Adorable European brown bear cubs under specialized care, a rare newborn bongo calf and a sable antelope calf all join the safari in 2023.

Sable mom and baby walking at Six Flags Safari in Jackson NJ

In 2022, these were the new Six Flags Safari animals.

Sawyer, the Southern White Rhinoceros

  • Six-year-old (now 7 years old) Sawyer joins three adult female rhinos in the Afrikka section of the safari. Although grey in color, the southern white rhinoceros is the largest living species of the five species of rhino, averaging 4,000 to 6,000 pounds. At 3,800 pounds and growing, Sawyer has a youthful bounce in his step and enjoys human touch like scratches from a bristle brush. With a diet of hay and grain, Sawyer and his fellow rhinos are one the world’s last remaining “mega-herbivores” – a large animal that eats mainly plants. He lives side-by-side with other animals native to Africa such as elephants, ostriches and zebras.

Three Reticulated Giraffe Calves  (now toddlers)

  • Three adorable and graceful calves were born in the safari this winter and join the safari’s “tower” (group) of 13 giraffes. Native to Africa, giraffes are the tallest land mammal on Earth. They can stand up to 17 feet tall and weigh from 1,500 to 3,000 pounds. A giraffe’s long neck measures up to seven feet long, and despite its length, contains seven vertebrae just like humans. Due to habitat loss, poaching, and other human-wildlife interferences, giraffes are considered “vulnerable to extinction.”

Six Flags Great Adventure Safari - Giraffe & SUVs

Two sable antelope calves (now toddlers)

  • This striking, horse-like antelope from Africa boasts a tufted tail, mane, and impressive, ringed horns that curve like a scimitar. Typically settling near water, the sable is an herbivore. In the wild, their beautiful horns are a highly prized trophy for hunters. Born in the safari, the pair of sable calves now reside in the Serengeti Grasslands section along with exotic hoof stock like addax, white-tailed gnu (black wildebeest), and aoudad.

Two red lechwe calves (now toddlers)

  • Identifiable by their reddish fur, white-ringed eyes, and tall horns reaching up to three feet long, this type of antelope is usually found near aquatic areas in Zambia and Botswana and are considered a “near threatened species” in the wild. The safari’s red lechwe calves, born onsite this winter, reside in the Wilde Plains section with a vast array of African species such as giraffe, greater kudu, ankole cattle, dama gazelle, white-bearded gnu (blue/brindled wildebeest), bongo and more.

Two Asian water buffalo calves

  • Two adorable Asian water buffalo calves join the Afrikka section. While they bear some similarities to their African cousins, the Cape buffalo, these are domesticated animals. In the wild, they are commonly found on farms as beasts of burden. Their milk, which has more fat than that of domestic cattle, is used for making liquid butter in India. In the safari, they are true to their name and are often found submerged in ponds with only their heads visible above water.

Spring brings more baby animals to the Drive Thru Safari (now toddlers)

The Animal Care Team looks forward to welcoming an array of adorable babies including the exciting arrival of giraffe babies and scimitar calves.

Safety improvements at the Six Flags Great Adventure Drive Thru Safari Made in 2022

  • Roadway Enhancements – Guests enjoy a smooth experience on an expanded, two-lane roadway with five newly paved miles of blacktop. The wider roadway helps to better accommodate guests who wish to enjoy the tour at their own pace and accommodates school buses for educational programs.

More Highlights for the 2023 Six Flags Great Adventure Drive Thru Safari

  • Georgia the Giraffe  celebrates thirty-one years of life, likely one of the oldest giraffes under human care and a grandmother to many giraffes on property.
  • Save an Icon Pin Program  returns with proceeds benefitting the Wildlife Conservation Network. This 2023 collectible pin will feature both the Bald Eagle and Blue and Gold Macaw.
  • Monthly Safari Overnights  Six Flags Wild Safari will host their popular monthly overnight camping adventures this summer, a unique experience for a lifetime of memories.

Other enhancements to the Six Flags Great Adventure Drive Thru Safari made in 2022

  • Enhanced Safari Entrance –  Six Flags’ expansive modernization and beautification efforts included a new roadway entrance and upgraded safari plaza to welcome guests;
  • Enhanced Mobile App  – A new mobile app feature allowed guests to add their safari pass to their Google Pay Wallet or Apple Wallet expediting the admission experience and reduce wait time.
  • New Audio Tour –  Guests can immerse themselves in the animal world with a new audio tour. Energetic narrators will showcase 11 simulated natural habitats featuring more than 70 different species of animals. Guests will learn fun and educational facts about the animals, hear fascinating animal sounds and music from around the world. At the start of their adventure, guests will receive a handout with QR codes that take them to the audio tour and safari map. The audio tour is free and can be streamed from any mobile device.
  • Volta Electric Vehicle Charging Stations  – Compatible with all electric vehicles, units are available in the safari parking lot.
  • Safari Off Road Education –  This fun and educational tour on a giant, off-road vehicle features a personal tour guide and driver, and an opportunity to feed giraffes and meet small exotic animals up close.
  • Science on Safari  – This contactless safari experience features a special Academic Adventure audio tour, grade-specific guidebook and optional visit with an animal educator.

a car drives past an elephant in the drive thru safari at Great Adventure.

Are there any differences between the new drive thru safari and the old one?

The safari was renovated in 2013 for the opening of Safari Off Road Adventure, and some of the sections were redefined. That pathway remains in place. Plus guests will be able to visit the Baboon Jungle prior to exiting the safari. Camp Aventura will remain closed.

You no longer have to worry about the baboons. No. In 2003, fencing was added along the roadway to separate the baboons from the cars.

How long will the drive thru safari be available?

To ensure the safety of guests and maximize on social distancing guidelines, the safari will remain a self-drive-thru experience after Six Flags Great Adventure opens for the regular season. They do plan to reopen the Safari Off Road Adventure in the near future. No date has been set.

Will there be restrooms available?

There will be indoor restrooms available at the exit of the safari.

Will there be any souvenirs to buy?

Yes! There will be concession stands for souvenirs or refreshments at the end of the safari tour.

Stay tuned. This is a developing story and we can’t wait to bring you more details.

Maps show when and where Vermont's best solar eclipse views will be

By Terry Eliasen, Exec. Weather Producer

Updated on: April 8, 2024 / 4:58 PM EDT / CBS Boston

BURLINGTON, Vt. - When the total solar eclipse takes place, one of the best spots to see this historic event will be in Vermont, where the weather looks to cooperate . Here's a map showing where totality will occur, and what time it will happen.

Vermont solar eclipse path of totality map

vermont-eclipse.jpg

The southern edge of the path of totality line passes right through the towns of Middlebury, Northfield and Barre. You will need to get just north of these areas.

Cities and towns that will see a 100% total eclipse include:

  • St. Johnsbury
  • Essex Junction

Popular Vermont communities to the south like Rutland, Springfield, Bennington and Brattleboro are just slightly outside the path of totality. But even 99% totality is NOT ENOUGH to get the full experience of seeing a total eclipse.

Hoping to hit the slopes for the eclipse? Ski Vermont says "lodging at Vermont's ski areas is booked, with few exceptions." Anyone heading north is advised to arrive early.

Places to stay in Stow have a 99% occupancy rate, and area bed and breakfasts began selling out a year ago . Some of the cheapest rooms still available start at $500, an inn owner tells WBZ-TV.

Vermont had a view of a partial eclipse in 2017 , seeing about 60% of the sun obscured by the moon.

Vermont total solar eclipse timeline

burlington-eclipse.jpg

In western parts of Vermont like Middlebury and Burlington, the eclipse gets underway starting at 2:14 p.m. On the eastern side in places like St. Johnsbury, it will start at 2:16 p.m.

Burlington will be in darkness (totality) for 3 minutes and 19 seconds, starting at 3:26 p.m. If you're flying in for the show, the FAA warns that the Burlington International Airport could see delays.

The entire event from start to finish lasts just over 2 hours, concluding at about 4:37 p.m.

Vermont cloud cover forecast for April 8

Historically, the data shows that New England is very likely to have a cloudy day in early April. However, the latest forecast gives us reason to be optimistic that there will not be any major storminess or cloud cover in the region.

There will be a warm front stretching across the Upper Midwest and through the Great Lakes on Monday, bringing some high clouds into the region.

Though the clouds could add a bit of a white haze, it's not likely that it will completely block the show.
