Orange and white Clownfish swimming through anemone on the Great Barrier Reef, Australia

The Great Barrier Reef needs no introduction

It's one of the world's seven natural wonders. It's home to over 1,600 types of fish, 30 species of whale and dolphin, and 215 varieties of birds. And it's  the planet's largest coral reef system . In fact, it's so big that astronauts have seen it from space. After dry land adventures along  Queensland 's  East Coast , hit the water with professional marine biologists to explore this fascinating underwater world. Look out for clownfish peeking out of anemones, inquisitive Maori wrasse gliding below or turtles munching on seagrass.

Great Barrier Reef travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

How to get to the Great Barrier Reef

Most of our East Coast trips begin in Sydney, Cairns or Brisbane. Some of the most popular launching pads for the Great Barrier Reef are Airlie Beach, Townsville and Port Douglas.

These destinations are all serviced by commercial airlines. It's also possible to drive to one of the towns near the Great Barrier Reef and access the wonders of the underwater world on a small group tour.

How do I get around the Great Barrier Reef?

If you plan on visiting the reef on a day trip, try to allow at least two days to visit the Great Barrier Reef. This will give you some flexibility if the weather isn’t good on the day you originally planned to visit the reef. The other option is to join a Whitsunday Islands Explorer tour and spend several days on a live-aboard yacht exploring the Great Barrier Reef. The waters of the Great Barrier Reef get warmer the further north you go.

When is the best time to visit the Great Barrier Reef?

There are only two seasons along the reef – the dry season (winter) from May to October and the wet season (summer) from November to April. The temperatures are fairly consistent throughout the year with average highs of 30°C and lows of 21°C.

May through October is considered to be the best time to experience the reef as rainfall is low and water visibility is high. You may also see whales during their annual migration from the Antarctic.

If you're visiting between October and May, it's advisable to wear a stinger suit to protect yourself from possible jellyfish stings.

What do I pack for the Great Barrier Reef?

The Great Barrier Reef tends to be a casual place so you can leave your fancy clothes at home. Even if you're staying at a high-end resort, smart casual clothes are all you will need. Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat are a must, even in winter, as the sun reflects off the water and white sand. Bring essentials such as basic medications with you won't find any shops when you're out exploring the reef.

What is the internet access like on the Great Barrier Reef?

In short, pretty much non-existent unless you're near one of the major tourist hubs such as Hamilton Island in the Whitsundays or on the mainland at a town like Airlie Beach.

Is there mobile phone coverage on the Great Barrier Reef?

Unless you're near one of the major tourist spots, it's unlikely you will be able to get a mobile phone signal.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travellers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Great Barrier Reef Overview

Get Ready for Fascinating Adventure on Great Barrier Reef Tours

Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is more than just a proud national treasure – it’s one of the natural wonders of the world. At over 1,800 miles long and up to 40 miles wide in some places, it holds the distinction of being the only living thing on the planet that is visible from outer space!

You can get the opportunity to witness the breathtaking beauty of the Great Barrier Reef up close by booking one of the many exciting Great Barrier Reef tours that are available.

Where is the coral reef?

The Great Barrier Reef is located in the Coral Sea and runs almost parallel to the coast of Queensland on the eastern coast of Australia. Also along the Queensland coast are the hugely popular cities of Cairns, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Brisbane. Each one of these cities makes the perfect starting point for your Great Barrier Reef adventure.

Great Barrier Reef Tours from Cairns , for example, can be multiday tours that give you the chance to visit several locations such as the splendid reef, Daintree Rainforest (the oldest living forest in the world) and a day spent learning spear throwing and fish hunting from the welcoming Aboriginal people.

If you begin your Australia vacation in thrilling and picturesque Sydney, there are Great Barrier Reef Tours from Sydney that let you stop in many iconic locations such as captivating Uluru (Ayers Rock), engaging Alice Springs and cosmopolitan Melbourne.

Go snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef!

It’s a diver’s paradise! The Great Barrier Reef is made up of over 3,000 magnificent coral reefs with a spectacular display of more than 400 different types of coral and over 1,500 species of tropical fish. If you enjoy snorkeling then this is the most amazing snorkeling adventure you’ll ever have!

Many visitors take a cruise from Cairns over the reef. Once there, you can go on guided snorkeling tours or venture out on your own to explore the reef. If you are new to snorkeling, no worries – join an introductory diving class to learn all the basics then head off to see all the wonders of the reef.

Aside from snorkeling, you also have the options of helmet diving to the ocean floor, or joining a glass bottom boat or semi-submersible tour of the reef.

The Islands of the Great Barrier Reef

Coral cays and hundreds of picture perfect islands are also a part the amazing Great Barrier Reef. These many gorgeous islands include: • Fraser Island – You can easily see why this dazzling island is called “Paradise” in the local Aboriginal as you tour its gorgeous beaches and discover all the amazing wildlife it holds. • Lady Elliot Island – Manta rays, dolphins and an absolutely scrumptious buffet lunch make your day on this island simply unforgettable. • Green Island – With crystal clear waters and sparkling white sandy beaches, Green Island is a natural choice for lazing the day away.

Enjoy a Trip from Cairns or Brisbane

To visit the very best coral reef Australia (or any other country) has to offer, you can join a day trip from Cairns or book Great Barrier Reef tours from Brisbane, which feature stops at popular tourist attractions such as Hervey Bay, Airlie Beach and the Whitsunday Islands.

Relax as your tour company handles all the planning and you can relax and enjoy your vacation pretty much at your own pace! Many Australia tour packages arrange hotel accommodations, included stops and transportation options for you, even if you opt for the freedom and convenience of a self-guided tour.

Having your itinerary planned by tour experts who know the area so well is a real bonus! Whether it’s a ride from beautiful Bagara to the Mon Repos Conservation Park to see nesting and hatching Logger Head turtles or a day spent exploring the wonders of Green Island.

VISITING THE GREAT BARRIER REEF – AUSTRALIA: A COMPLETE GUIDE

VISITING THE GREAT BARRIER REEF – AUSTRALIA: A COMPLETE GUIDE

Visiting the Great Barrier Reef – Australia. A complete guide with everything you need to know about visiting Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

About the Great Barrier Reef

Situated in the Coral Sea, the Great Barrier Reef starts at the tip of the Cape York Peninsula, stretching more than 2300km along Queensland’s coast right down to Bundaberg in the states south. It’s the worlds largest reef system, boasting around 3000 individual reefs and 900 islands. The Great Barrier Reef is roughly the same size as Italy, so large that it can be seen from outer space! It’s home to a diverse range of wildlife including more than 1500 species of fish, six of the world’s seven species of turtle and thirty species of whale, dolphin and porpoise, just to name a few. In 1981, the Great Barrier Reef was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Visiting the Great Barrier Reef

It’s safe to say that the Great Barrier Reef is one of Australia’s great icons. Tourists flock from near and far to witness one of the seven wonders of the natural world . And so they should. A visit to the Great Barrier Reef is an unforgettable experience. As everyone is different, it is worth considering what kind of experience you want to have and then researching an option that will help meet your expectation. We know people who have visited the Great Barrier Reef and walked away disappointed. To be honest, we can understand why this happens. There are places along the reef that are great for fish life, others which are great for colourful corals and then there are sites which are better for spotting larger marine life like turtle and sharks.

Unfortunately, the Great Barrier Reef isn’t completely full of vibrant colourful corals like you see in travel brochures. Although these picture perfect scenes do exist, you won’t find them everywhere. So before you go ahead and book a trip to the reef, consider how much time you can spend on the reef, ask what you can expect to see and try to work out if this may satisfy your expectations. It may also be worth considering visiting different sections of the Great Barrier Reef, as they are all different!

Popular places to visit the Great Barrier Reef from

There are so many options available when planning a visit to the Great Barrier Reef. Gateways to some of the reefs most popular areas are located in prime tourist locations along Queensland’s coastline, making a reef visit easily accessible. Some of these spots include:

  • Cape Tribulation – Gateway to reef day trips
  • Cairns – Gateway to reef day/multi day boat trips and islands visits
  • Port Douglas – Gateway to reef day/multi day boat trips
  • Townsville – Gateway to reef day/multi day boat trips and island visits
  • Airlie Beach – Gateway to reef day/multi day boat trips, Whitsunday Islands visits & scenic flights
  • Hervey Bay – Gateway to reef day trips and island visits
  • Bundaberg – Gateway to reef day trips and island visits

Visiting the Great Barrier Reef from Airlie Beach

Best ways of visiting the Great Barrier Reef

There are several ways of visiting the Great Barrier Reef and there is for sure, an option for everyone:

1. Day trip by boat

Jumping on board a day trip is probably the most popular way of visiting the great Barrier Reef. Both dive and snorkel trips depart from destinations such as Cairns, Port Douglas, Airlie Beach and Townsville and are a great way to experience the reef. Tour operators frequent many different sites along the reef, with options to snorkel, dive or stay on board. There are multiple operators to choose from and itineraries vary as do prices. We recently booked a day trip from Cairns with Passions of Paradise and had a great day scuba diving out on the reef. A full day trip usually includes lunch, tea/coffee, fins/snorkel, stinger suit (during stinger season Nov-May) and full dive gear hire (if you’ve booked to dive).

Visiting the Great Barrier Reef from Hamilton Island

2. Overnight sailing trip

If you have a little more time, booking an overnight or multi night sailing trip is an even better way of visiting the Great Barrier Reef. You’ll stop at more sites, have more opportunities to swim, snorkel or dive and more time to soak it all up! The most popular place to book a sailing trip is from Airlie Beach. We indulged in a 2d/2nt sailing trip with Oz Sail back in August 2021. Despite blue skies on our departure morning, the weather gods turned on us, making the snorkelling and sailing conditions pretty average (and cold!) Some of the nicer parts of the reef were around Hook Island. But the tides and conditions often dictate each boats itinerary. Overall, there are some lovely parts of the reef to explore in this area and an overnight sailing trip is a great way of doing that!

Visiting the Great Barrier Reef on a multi day sailing trip

3. Live-aboard boat trip

Attention all Scuba Divers! By far the best way of visiting the Great Barrier Reef as an avid scuba diver is by joining a live-aboard. There are a few operators out of Cairns offering multi day trips, a spectacular way of immersing yourself in this underwater haven. We recently booked a 5 night Coral Sea & Cod Hole expedition with Mike Ball and all we can say is WOW. Exploring both the Osprey and Ribbon Reefs, we were treated to some of the Great Barrier Reefs premier dive sites, which were in pristine condition. The diversity of marine life living in these parts of the reef were incredible. With no other boats around, we had these sites all to ourselves, making our experience even more memorable. These trips aren’t cheap, but the experience was incredible and totally worth the money in our opinion.

4. Visiting one of the Great Barrier Reefs many islands

Another great way of visiting the Great Barrier Reef is by heading out to one of the reefs many islands. It’s possible to do day trips to some of these islands, but for a more relaxed experience, we would recommend staying for a night or two. From some of the islands it’s possible to snorkel, dive, paddle board, swim or take a glass bottom boat tour. You may even be able to book a dive or snorkel trip during the day as well. To make life easy, below is a list of some of the islands resort where you can stay:

5. Take a Great Barrier Reef Scenic Flight

Most people visiting the Great Barrier Reef do so from the water. But there is one other way to see the reef which will totally blow your mind! Taking a scenic flight and seeing the reef from a birds eye view gives a totally new perspective of this UNESCO World Heritage site. Fly Australia operates amazing 70 minute flights over the Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef. It’s difficult to describe just how beautiful it is seeing the reef from above, so we highly recommend taking a flight to witness it for yourself. The flight circles around the famous Heart Reef a couple of times, allowing plenty of opportunity to get some snaps. We booked our fights through Book Me and were able to get a heavily reduced rate.

Tip – The optimal time to take a GBR scenic flight is during low tide as the reef is more visible when the water levels are lower.

The best time to visit the Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is situated within Queensland’s tropics and visiting is possible year round. The region generally has a wet season – November to March and dry season – April to October. The best time to visit is during the dry season with the best months (weather wise) being June-October. During these months, the temperatures are cooler and there’s less chance of rain. This creates ideal conditions and water visibility for snorkelling and scuba diving. The dry season is also the peak season (school holidays June/July), bringing more tourists to the reef and higher prices. April/May and November can often produce good conditions to visit the reef and are generally less busy.

Rainfall during the wet season can be high with February/March typically being the wettest months. The wet season is also cyclone season! Storms and strong winds occur more frequently which can result in water conditions and visibility being compromised. The temperatures are higher durning theses months and the humidity for some can be unbearable, particularly in the northern areas!

Weather aside, there are optimal times of visiting the Great Barrier Reef for certain Marine life experiences:

great barrier reef tours from melbourne

Visiting the Great Barrier Reef is a must when visiting Australia! There are so many wonderful areas of the reef to explore and a plethora of marine life to see. So whether it be chilling on a sun lounger and sipping a cocktail on a tropical island, snorkelling in the Whitsundays or diving on the Ribbon Reefs, Australia’s Great Barrier Reef has something for everyone.

Our Great Barrier Reef Tours

The Great Barrier Reef is a natural gift to Australia, a truly wondrous underwater phenomenon. It is the world’s largest coral reef system with 2900 individual reefs and 900 islands located off the coast of Queensland in the Coral Sea. Just to give an idea of its size, it stretches 2600 kilometres/1600 miles and is the world’s biggest single structure made by living organisms. In fact, it was declared a World Heritage site in 1981 and a must-visit on an Australian vacation.

Great Barrier Reef Vacation Highlights

The Great Barrier Reef is environmentally protected to ensure marine life is healthy so that one can continue to see whales, dolphins, porpoises, sea turtles and a whole host of colourful tropical fish swimming in these waters.

With its clear warm waters and accessibility, the Great Barrier Reef not only attracts snorkelers and scuba divers who find this a major region for their activities but visitors can choose to stay on the mainland in resorts on trips to Australia. These include Cairns and Port Douglas. Or you can decide to stay on one of the many islands catering to tourists such as Hamilton Island, Hayman Island and Heron Island in the Whitsunday Islands .

There are other ways to view the Reef on Australian tours. You can enjoy a short cruise for a few days or simply take a glass-bottomed boat for a half-day outing to view the underwater treasures.

Choosing how to explore might be the most difficult part of your Great Barrier Reef vacation, but you can bet it will be a rewarding one.

C’mon say G’day Downunder. Book one of our Australia vacations today and start exploring!

Melbourne, Sydney, The Reef and Uluru

The aussie experience you won't forget.

Experience Australia’s most famous icons with our 12 days Melbourne, Sydney, The Reef and Uluru Tour including the ever-vibrant Melbourne and the Great Ocean Road, stunning Sydney, it’s Harbour, Opera House and bridge, Uluru Ayers Rock in central Australia and the Great Barrier Reef.

Blue-Mountains-traverse-walk-gallery-13

Destination Highlights

Located in Australia’s southern state of Victoria, Melbourne is Australia’s second-largest city with a growing population of more than 4 million people. It’s a vibrant city with just the right architectural mix of colonial heritage and contemporary design; from the European grandeur of Flinders Street Station to the brave innovation of Federation Square.

Melbourne is a food lover’s paradise. You can dine in some of the finest three hatted restaurants in the country or enjoy some rustic fare in the authentic Italian restaurants of Lygon Street – the Little Italy of Melbourne. There’s nothing nicer than a hearty meal to keep you going while travelling around a new city.

Sydney has a feel to it like no other city – light reflected on water, buildings and bushland fringing the bright blue of the Harbour, ferries zipping around, seagulls squealing, excitement in the air. Local Sydney-siders from all walks of life and visitors from all over the World rub shoulders in a good-natured lifestyle. Life is good at Travel Destination Sydney. Sydney is a great city in which to spend time wandering while discovering the historic nooks and crannies that make it so interesting. The Rocks Historic Precinct has been well preserved, Circular Quay is a focal point for Sydney Ferries, and the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge dominate its centre.

Uluru is one of the Worlds Greatest Wonders

Nothing has quite prepared you for the contrast between the red sand stretching to the horizon in every direction and the monolith of red rock jutting upwards like the toe of a sleeping giant sticking up through the desert.

Uluru (Ayers Rock) is a mystical place, one to be savoured as the sun rises and the rock changes colour to meet the new day, or at sunset as the last rays beam across the flat of the desert and highlight the crevices and fissures of Uluru as it settles in for the night. It is almost as if this Australian icon has a personality of its own.

The Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest feature made up of living organisms.  Stretching  2,600 kilometres (1,600 miles) down the northeast coast of Queensland, Australia, the Great Barrier Reef can be seen clearly from outer space.

Consisting of more than 900 islands and 2,900 individual reefs, it cannot be experienced by strapping on a mask, snorkel and fins and taking a casual swim from the beach.  A great deal of thought has to be given to the style of the Great Barrier Reef trip you wish to take.

Blue Mountains

The Blue Mountains are a part of the Great Australia Dividing Range. This runs up the east coast of Australia from Melbourne in the south to past Cairns in the far north. They are about 1 and 1/2 hours drive from Sydney City and the 3 Sisters lookout and sky rail should be at the top of your bucket list. From here you have stunning expansive views and can smell the Australian bush and see wildlife in their natural environment while exploring the many walking and hiking trails.

Map of the Great Barrier Reef

Great Barrier Reef submarine reef tours permit passengers to truly submerge themselves into the underwater world of the beautiful coral and exotic marine creatures of one of Australia’s most iconic natural landmarks.

The only company which currently operates Great Barrier Reef submarine tours is based on Fitzroy Island , which takes 45 minutes to reach by ferry from Cairns. The island is a national park filled with mountains, rainforests, and a coastline encircling the Great Barrier Reef.

Only two people at a time can experience the Great Barrier Reef submarine reef tours departing from Fitzroy Island’s main beach, allowing for a truly intimate experience. Stinger suits and masks are provided, but passengers must bring their own sunscreen, swimwear, towels, and sunglasses.

All passengers receive instructions and safety briefings before a safety diver guides them into the submarine. The safety diver accompanies the submarine during the entire excursion, while the submarine pilot doubles as a tour guide providing vivid descriptions of the surrounding sea life and corals. The submarine never ventures very far from the shore during this 20-minute journey.

As the submarine contains no hatches, passengers can enjoy a true Great Barrier Reef diving experience without needing scuba diving equipment. Although the entire journey is less than a half-hour long, T-shirts and photo CDs are available so memories can last a lifetime.

Countries Visited

Places visited, suggested duration, customizable itinerary, melbourne - welcome to melbourne.

As the capital of Victoria and Australia’s second-largest city, Melbourne is a lively, multicultural urban center. Within Australia, Melbourne is celebrated for its diverse and gourmet dining scene, boutique shopping, coffee culture, and sophisticated taste in architecture.

Discover its charms as you settle into your hotel, hit the streets, and get better acquainted. Wander over to Flinders Street Station, a magnificent French renaissance-style building which has the distinction of being the first train station in an Australian city, then walk to Federation Square, a brilliant civic center and cultural precinct. Weigh in on the controversy surrounding its intriguing “shard” architectural design, watch a live show or see some of the 20,000 Australian artworks at the Ian Potter Centre. Finally, stroll along the Yarra River, stopping at local cafes along the way.

What's Included:

Melbourne - See the Sights with a Local

Now that you’ve done some exploring on your own, it’s time to throw an Aussie into the mix. On day two of your adventure, you’ll get to see all of the nooks and crannies of the city center on a walking tour led by a knowledgeable Melbournian.

Discover hidden lanes with incredible cafes, see cutting-edge environmentally sustainable architecture, and learn about historic gems as your tour guide walks you through the city, revealing what makes it special. Find out how Melbournians live, what makes their city unique, and get familiar with the local culture and history in an experience few tourists ever get.

In the afternoon join a Melbourne bicycle tour. Ride past the famous Melbourne Cricket Ground (and learn a bit about the national sport), find out which districts are known for their mansions, beaches, restaurants, or art, and go to some of the best vantage points in the city.

Melbourne - Discover the Great Ocean Road

Just beyond the hustle and bustle of Melbourne lies the beachside town of Torquay. Aside from being a dreamy place with gorgeous ocean vistas, it’s also home to some of the world’s best surf beaches, including Bells Beach, and the start of the Great Ocean Road.

Winding its way for 243 kilometers (151 miles) along the southeastern coast of Australia, the Great Ocean Road captures some of the country’s most breathtaking sights, sweetest towns, and natural wonders. Travel the famous asphalt ribbon while gazing out at open oceans framed by craggy cliffs, stopping in charming towns for a taste of fresh fish and chips and keeping an eye out for koalas in the wild.

When you reach the Twelve Apostles, a collection of towering limestone rock formations that jut out of the ocean near Port Campbell, board a helicopter for an exhilarating flight. Admire the beauty and make the most of unparalleled photo opportunities, as you get intimate with the majestic landmark. Listen to stories of the Shipwreck Coast, which has caught more than 600 ships in its deadly grasp, and learn of the brave and tragic characters of the region.

Cairns - Visit The Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef

Wave goodbye to the southern climes and deciduous trees of the south as you board a flight bound for the tropical north. Your destination will be Cairns; an electric north Queensland city that enjoys a prime position between the azure waters of the Coral Sea and the lush greenery of UNESCO World Heritage-listed rainforests.

Settle into your hotel and spend your afternoon enjoying the sun and relaxed waterside atmosphere of the area. Stroll the streets, popping into art stores, clothing boutiques, and cafes, walk the Esplanade, a picturesque coastal boardwalk, or lounge at a bar or restaurant by the water’s edge with a cocktail in hand.

Undara Volcanic National Park - The Gulf Savannah Country and Undara Volcanic National Park

Don your akubra (iconic Australian hat) and prepare to explore the Queensland outback as you travel out to the Savannah Country. Plains, grasses, and the occasional tropical rainforest inhabit this dry, relatively flat area, which is also home to cattle ranges, semi-precious stone deposits, and a fascinating underground volcanic cave system.

Embark on a scenic drive, with stops in beautiful spots and quaint towns, where you can sample local cuisine and try your hand at fossicking, searching for gold or semi-precious gems. Your final destination will be the Undara Volcanic National Park, home of the famous Lava Tubes.

Spend the evening breathing in the beauty of the surrounding bush, dining on Australian cuisine, or undertaking a wildlife at sunset walk to see and learn about the native animals of the area. Then settle into a restored turn-of-the-century railway carriage for a luxurious overnight stay.

Cairns - Explore the Lava Tubes of Undara Volcanic National Park

Some 190,000 years ago the Undara volcano erupted, throwing roughly 23 billion cubic meters of hot lava around the surrounding area. As a result, the flow of this lava formed colossal tube and cave systems, which remain the longest of their kind in the world.

Begin your day with a bush breakfast, before setting off to explore the prehistoric Undara Lava Tubes on a guided walk. Learn how the immense caverns were formed, the role they played throughout history, and admire their scale and beauty. Your guide will also show you other culturally and historically significant areas of the national park.

After your tour, enjoy a refreshing lunch and look out for wild kangaroos, wallabies, and bats, then set off back to Cairns.

Cairns - Snorkel the Great Barrier Reef

Just a little off the shore of Cairns lies the incredible UNESCO World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef. Spanning some 133,000 square miles, it is not only one of the seven natural wonders of the world, but also the largest living thing on earth.

Explore its underwater coral gardens and schools of tropical fish as you set off on a full-day reef adventure. Travel north to Palm Cove, from where you’ll board a catamaran and set sail for the outer-lying Agincourt Reef. Known as one of the most beautiful areas of the Great Barrier Reef, rich in tropical fish life, vibrant soft and hard coral, and even the occasional dwarf minke whale, it is a paradise waiting to be discovered.

Snorkel or dive the crystal clear waters and see the beauty and breathtaking vibrancy of the coral. Alternatively, if you prefer to stay dry, you can discover the reef from the safety of a semi-sub. Dip just one meter below the water and see the splendor of the reef in complete comfort.

Sydney - See the Sights of Sydney

On day eight of your trip, say your farewells to the tropics and head south to Australia’s largest city, Sydney. Positioned on a picturesque natural harbor and boasting the iconic Sydney Opera House, Harbour Bridge, and Sydney Tower, it is a sight to behold. What’s more, its mix of indigenous and colonial history, beautiful city beaches, and enviable dining and bar scene make it a must-see.

Breathe in its electric atmosphere as you settle into your hotel in the city center and begin your exploration of its streets. Walk along the harbor, admiring the sites and local musicians, see the flora and fauna at the Royal Botanic Gardens, explore Sydney’s many galleries and museums, or walk to Darling Harbour, where waterside restaurants, bars, clubs, and stores offer plenty of fanciful distractions.

Sydney - Cruise the Harbor

Since Sydney has one dazzling, sparkling harbor, why not make the most of it? Begin your morning with a spectacular Sydney Harbour cruise, which will show the city off to its best advantage. Cruise past the white sails of the Sydney Opera House and the famous arches of the Harbour Bridge as you gaze over the cityscape.

The cruise will also take you past the historic Rocks district, the smiling gateway of Luna Park (a 1930s-style amusement park), the waterfront mansions of the more prestigious suburbs, and the gorgeous headlands that frame the area. Along the way, learn about the Sydney way of life, its diverse culture, and its history.

In the afternoon, meet the cute, fuzzy, creepy, and downright terrifying inhabitants of Australia as you take a special tour of Sydney’s Wildlife World. Walk through a colorful butterfly sanctuary, get hands-on with unique local reptiles, and see the five most venomous snakes in the world. You’ll also get to cuddle up with a koala, see the Nocturnal House, where cute possums and quolls get active in the dark, and visit an exclusive quarantine area to learn about the likes of wallabies, echidnas, and more Aussie creatures.

Sydney - Marvel at the Blue Mountains

Ancient sandstone mountains imbued in a sapphire-colored haze seem to be a thing of fairy tales. Yet drive just 80 kilometers west of Sydney and you’ll find that the Blue Mountains are not a figment of your imagination.

See the legendary mountains in all their beauty, as you board a luxury mini coach and set off in a westerly direction. Make a stop in the leafy suburb of Glenbrook and go for a quick walk around the Blue Mountains National Park to see cute eastern grey kangaroos in the wild. Then set off further into the mountains until you reach the stunning Echo Point Lookout, near Katoomba. Here you can enjoy breathtaking views over Jamison Valley and the famous Three Sisters sandstone rock formation.

At this point you’ll be given a backpack, a map, and walk information, as well as three hours to explore the area at your leisure. Head down one of the walking tracks and watch the dry eucalyptus trees give way to lush ferns, palms, and mosses as you descend deeper into a canyon. Stop for a picnic lunch at the majestic Katoomba Falls, gaze over sapphire-hued valleys from designated lookout points, and breathe in the tranquility and beauty of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed area.

Sydney - Farewell Sydney

Take a final stroll around Sydney Harbour and stop for a coffee, before saying your goodbyes, heading for the airport, and boarding your flight home.
