Golden Triangle

An amazing journey that I thoroughly enjoyed on The Golden Triangle Tour. I loved learning about the culture and seeing such beautiful architecture and hearing the wonderful associated stories. The Kite festival was brilliant, our tour guide 'Manu' was helpful and friendly at all times and added a personal touch to our group,he was very knowledgeable. I fully recommend the 'cooking class' in Jaipur and of course the highlight of the tour was the Taj Mahal. All the places we stayed were great except The Hotel Grand Park Inn, Delhi, the staff were lovely but the rooms were cold and damp with mould in the bathrooms, grubby linen and general cleanliness was lacking, as there was no communal area to go sit or meet others, I felt confined to my room, not the best place to start and finish an other wise great trip.

India\'s Bestseller - 5 Day Golden Triangle - Delhi, Agra & Jaipur (Guaranteed Departure) Tour

India's Bestseller - 5 Day Golden Triangle - Delhi, Agra & Jaipur (Guaranteed Departure)

Pros: - Competitive pricing of the tour, especially considering that it is a private tour - The hotels were all decent for the price, and I really enjoyed the breakfast buffets - I liked the structure of the tour, with all the key highlights of the Golden Triangle - The guide in Agra was good - The guide in Jaipur Himmat Singh was great, he gave me a lot of information and background knowledge on the visited sites, and was very friendly. He also helped me to find a good place to purchase perfume and really adapted the tour to my wishes - The driver Subhash was very kind and caring Cons: - The Delhi tour guide Pradhyuman Singh was not honest and made me feel uncomfortable. He made me pay the bicycle tour 500 rupees (should probably have been 5-10 times less). I knew it wasn't right and protested, but he kept repeating 500 and I didn't have a choice because I couldn't go anywhere else otherwise. Only after I paid he said that it was including a "tip" and that it was "as I wished" but on the moment I had no choice. I complained and clearly said I will not pay anything anymore if I'm not warned before. During the entire tour he kept repeating that he collects currencies from counties and absolutely wanted to "see" Swiss francs, implyingt that he wanted me to give him a Swiss banknote. Although I initially wanted to give a tip of 500 rupees, I told him he could have a CHF 10 note instead as a tip, which is approximately 1000 rupees, because he wouldn't stop talking about it. He then seemed unhappy and said that I have to tip 2000 rupees per guide. I said that it was way too much, but he kept insisting that it was always that amount, that everyone paid this amount, and that otherwise he barely gets any money to live. I tried to argue but eventually felt obliged to give the money - Irresponsive tour operator on the forced tipping issue: I contacted both the tour operator as well as Tourradar to ask for help on the problem encountered with the Delhi tour guide directly on the first evening. The tour operator never answered my message - In some places (Delhi mainly) I felt like I was always pushed to buy things, donate money, tip, overpay etc.

5 Days Private Golden Triangle India tour from New Delhi Tour

5 Days Private Golden Triangle India tour from New Delhi

I have booked a Golden triangle tour of India for my self and 5 other friends from 3-7 March(5 days).. from the start of the booking to the end of our trip all was well organised and very efficiently managed. We had a very good driver Mr Yasmin for the all trip, who couldn’t do enough to be helpful and attentive,we had 4 tour guides in all,and all of them very helpful and professional..The tour company that organised the actual tour in India was based I think in Agra.. the in charge person I think was Ahil and always available for resolving any questions. Will be using tourradar in the future as I know they do tours all over the world..a 5 star experience..Thank you..Vincenzo

Indian Getaway Tour

Indian Getaway

The tour guide was great, very knowledgeable and accommodating. Some of the elements felt like a school trip but that’s maybe because I have travelled alone before and am not used to doing everything en mass. Javed was fantastic and no request was too small. I would recommend the tour and also Javed as a guide.

Golden Triangle Tour With Ranthambore Tour

Golden Triangle Tour With Ranthambore

I travelled to India as a single mother with my 13 year old son and we booked the golden triangle with Ranthambore trip for 8 days. From the initial booking of the trip on line with Tour radar, the run up to the holiday and throughout the trip, I found the communication and service to have been excellent. There was a small issue prior to departure after a PayPal payment for additional activities that I had paid a month prior was bizarrely sent back to me, but I paid this in cash on my arrival to India. Thankfully the mishap didn’t affect the planned additional activities. Our driver ‘Messi’ picked us up at the airport and looked after us throughout the entire 8 day trip. He was brilliant, always available and friendly. We stayed in 4 different hotels, that were mostly adequate and comfortable. I wouldn’t class them as UK 4 star, but reasonable for the price you are paying. The second hotel in Jaipur unfortunately was not best as the location was very near to an open sewage river and ontop of the smell from that, there was a wedding on the hotel grounds across the road, that kept us awake all night when we had to be up at 4 am the following morning for an early start. We had tour guides in Delhi, Jaipur and Agra who were all very knowledgeable and friendly and whilst we were in Ranthambore on tiger safari, the safari guides were also good and we had an amazing experience of seeing a tiger very close up. Agra and the Taj Mahal was incredible and was the perfect ending to our trip before we went back to Delhi and flew home.

Golden Triangle Tour with Varanasi Tour

During our trip to India in September 2023, World Travel Experiences arranged a fantastic and adaptable private journey for our family covering Varanasi and the Golden Triangle. Their suggested add-ons were not only valuable but also fascinating, allowing us complete freedom to choose. We were truly impressed by their excellent communication and hospitality, which we greatly appreciated. Our transportation was in a comfortable car equipped with a convenient phone charger, accompanied by a friendly and accommodating driver. Moreover, at each city, we had the pleasure of meeting local guides who shared their extensive knowledge in a way that was both comprehensive and easy to understand. Overall, it was an incredibly pleasant experience.

Reviews of India Solo Tours

Although I LOVED everything about this trip, I have to say that the experience was 10 times enhanced by our amazing CEO, Manvendra. He went above and beyond and truly made this the trip of a lifetime
Excellent tour!! Covered all the major sights in 05 days.
This was a really great experience. Our driver Praveen was superb and did everything he could to make our tour enjoyable. The hotels we stayed at were very good and especially Lal Garh in Jaselmere which was superb. The guides provided were informative and helpful and the Forts, Palaces and Temples were out of this world. In terms of value for money the tour was excellent. My highlights were Taj Mahal, Amber fort, Jaselmere and Udaipur, although there were so many others. My only dislike was the desert camp. It was windy, dusty and a lot of trash blowing around. However, if you like camels and desert then you will enjoy.

India Group Tours for Solo Travellers

Travel solo as part of a group tour to India

why travel solo to india?

Ancient spirituality, urban vibrancy and an eye to the future combine to tantalising effect in India.

On a group trip with other like-minded solo travellers in India, you’re in for a rich sensory experience. Whether you’re weaving through the rickshaws of Delhi, navigating the back alleys of Jaipur or drifting through the backwaters and beaches of Kerala, you’ll find moments of beauty at every corner.

Ancient traditions are the lifeblood of Indian culture. The birthplace of Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism, this is a country that exudes transcendental spirituality, evident in everything from architecture to everyday beliefs and locals threading marigolds outside temples as offerings.

The north is home to India’s most iconic (and chaotic) cities. Yet travel south to Kerala, and you’ll find yourself in another, more-tranquil world altogether. One of lush coconut groves and inviting beaches, with fragrant gently-spiced curries never far out of reach.

Top places to visit in India

This state on India’s tropical Malabar Coast is a beach lover’s dream with nearly 600km of Arabian Sea shoreline. Inshore from its palm-lined beaches you’ll find vast tea, coffee and spice plantations on the slopes of the Western Ghats, and backwaters to explore by boat.

The Taj Mahal may be Agra’s biggest tourist draw, but it’s not its only attraction. The Mughal empire has left its rich history within the city through a grand fort that overlooks the banks of the Yamuna River, as well as tombs and mausoleums.

Embrace the chaos of Delhi to truly make the most of a trip here. A wander around the city will have you weaving around tuk-tuks, spice stalls and strings of macaques silhouetted over rooftops, via haggling merchants and textile shops. Take in the local street food on a tour or turn to the temples to dial down the pace.

The capital of Rajasthan displays its royal history through opulent palaces and erstwhile aristocratic homes, many now converted into character-filled boutique hotels. At the centre sits the grand City Palace complex with an old town encircled by rose-toned walls that give “The Pink City” its name.

The Unforgettable Solo Groups to India

  • January 16, 2018 May 14, 2019

  • Destinations

Are You Looking For Something More Than The Average Solo Groups?

Never underestimate the mysterious beauty of India. Everyone knows of the wonders of Delhi and the strange, romantic Taj Mahal. In truth, they are “must see’s—destinations you see on a postcard, or browsing a ‘top ten places to go in india’ list. But after you witness India’s greatest hits the question remains—where do you go from there? It’s almost hard to imagine the amazing experiences that await in any direction. I like to say India a bombardment of sights, sounds, taste, and smell. It is a place that can all at once overwhelm your senses and also a place that can bring you peace.

Do you dare venture beyond the cookie cutter India trips? The solo groups where you see the safe highlights without wonderment or inspiration? Or do you travel with Suzy and Adventures For Singles a solo groups that with absolute certainty will go beyond your wildest expectations. The vibrant colors of the people and the country will leave a permanent mark in your soul.

The trip “Punjabi Boys & the Dalai Lama” offered by Adventures for Singles gives the solo traveler that rare opportunity to see an India that many only read about. Yes, you get your dose of Delhi and the Taj, but you also get immersed in those cultural experiences which set India apart from any other country.

Let Our Solo Groups to India Take You Away From The Norm

Discover three distinct lands that blend into a peaceful community who loves to receive visitors. I did this on my own last year. I present one of the most unique India Tour Packages for you who want to travel outside of the box of a tourist-trodden path. (see my blog). It’s such an easy journey with just two short internal flights. By the time you return you’ll feel you’ve ventured into two different planets!

Welcome to Amritster, land of the friendly Sikhs. At first sight, I fell in love with these gentle souls wearing funny neon turbans. Check into the Hyatt and explore the Old Bazaar. At the famous Golden Temple, we’ll help serve 100,000 lunches in the world’s largest kitchen. In Attari, attend the spectacular Flag Ceremony at the iconic Waghah Border Crossing. Frenetic and colorful, you’ll want to linger in Punjab.

Traveling to the Punjab region to the north, you will not just witness daily life and rituals, you become a part of them. Who wouldn’t want the opportunity to visit Dalai Lama’s cultural home of Dharamshala and spend time with Monks who have trained with His Holiness? Or work side-by-side with Sikh pilgrims to feed the poor in the world’s largest soup kitchen at the iconic Golden Temple? Oh, and don’t forget spending time caring and pampering elephants.

This solo groups highlights an India that goes beyond your standard tour. India is a country to be touched and truly witnessed and lived, not just viewed from a bus. This trip will change you.

‘Sikh’ and ye shall find fantastic fun! This is for those of you with wanderlust who want a story to tell. It will reboot your heart with an attitude of gratitude. Just bring your curiosity. Join us on a vacay to learn in-depth about the pursuit of happiness!

Before you hit the road for your next big adventure, you should check out some more solo travel ideas. If you want to join a group for your next solo adventure, contact Adventures for Singles today!

The perks of solo travel in India with Intrepid

An Intrepid leader and a group of travellers drinking chai in a street

A local leader

As a solo traveller, it’s easy to stick to the tourist trail. You take a selfie with the Taj Mahal, stroll around Red Fort or kick back in Goa. As great as these places are, you may miss out on those unexpected experiences that happen off the well-trodden path. A group tour isn’t like that. OK, you'll tick off big-ticket sites, but you'll also have an expert leader to introduce you to famous chai wallahs, take you to the best street food vendors and give you recommendations for your free time.

The busy ghats in Varanasi, India

India can be overwhelming sometimes, but it's generally a safe country for travellers and you should be able to enjoy your trip without any problems. That being said, scams, petty theft and pickpocketing (especially in crowded places) can happen. Our leaders know the areas to avoid after dark, can haggle at markets and will help you avoid pickpockets. It’s all the flexibility and freedom of independent travel, but with fewer risks.

A group of travellers eating a meal in a temple in India

Ready-made friends

Go solo, but not alone. That’s our motto. The average Intrepid trip has about ten people on it – people of all ages, backgrounds and places from all over the world. You're welcome to have as much downtime as you want to relax or explore your way, but it's nice to have travel pals to whizz around in a rickshaw with, share a biryani or have a chat over the breakfast table. Joy's doubled when it's shared.

Cyclists riding past a local woman and cows in India

Logistics and convenience

We get it – the thought of navigating busy bus stations and embarking on your first overnight sleeper train can be a little daunting. Travelling alone in India can be confusing and complicated, but not when you're with us. We'll organise your accommodation, public transport and all other logistics of travel so you don’t have to worry. Sit back and enjoy the ride, we've got your back.

Do I need a COVID-19 vaccine to join a solo tour in India?

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Learn more about Intrepid's COVID-19 policy

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organised on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you.

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please  contact us  so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re travelling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling to India?

You sure do. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their tour. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Are credit cards widely accepted in India?

Credit cards are being accepted in an increasing number of cafes, shops, restaurants and hotels/hostels in India, with Mastercard and Visa being the most common. That said, cash is still king, especially outside of cities like Kolkata, Delhi and Mumbai.

Are Intrepid's India tours accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. However, we’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Our solo travel safety guide

Share your itinerary.

Good advice for us all, but particularly for people travelling solo. Make copies of your itinerary, contact details, passport and travel insurance, then email them to yourself and to one or two friends/family at home. Check-in on social media when you can so people can keep track of where you are.

Remember the little things

If you’re arriving late in a city by yourself, book a hotel with a front desk or concierge service (many hotels also offer private transfers that don’t cost the earth from the airport or train station). If you're travelling with us, we can help you organise an arrival transfer. Read your maps  before  you head out for a walk (you can use a map app on your smartphone – or take screenshots of where you’re going if you don’t want to use up your precious data). If you need to check your map when you’re out and about, duck into a shop or café to do it. Leave the blingy jewellery, wedding rings and designer clothes at home, and aim to dress like the locals do – hit up the local markets if you haven’t packed the right outfits. Aim to keep track of travel times, so you’re not caught out after dark.

Roam if you want to

Most mobile/cell providers now offer travel passes to help manage your international roaming costs (which, let’s face it, are expensive!). For a few dollars a day, you’ll have access to data, which means you can log into your apps (like Skype, email and WhatsApp) when you’re out of WiFi zones and quickly get in touch with someone – a friend at home, someone in your group, or the police – if you need to. It might also be worth checking out the local cell/mobile providers as these can be quite cost effective.

Fare's fair

Solo travellers are way more likely to be ‘taken for a ride’ at the airport by unscrupulous taxi drivers, so do your research before you arrive. Make sure you get a cab from the airport/station taxi rank – if you’re not sure where to go, just head to the information desk for help. Touts tend to hang out in the arrivals area and promise cheaper rates, but can often be dodgy. When you get to the cab rank, ask the driver to use the meter or request a cost estimate  before  you hop in the car – if it’s way higher than it should be, pick another vehicle. A lot of airports have train stations attached as well, so consider public transport if you want to save a dollar or two.

Stick together

It’s one of the advantages of travelling solo on a group tour: safety in numbers. The big, 50-person bus groups stand out on the road, but a small Intrepid group of eight or nine people, with a local leader showing the way – including areas to avoid and getting around safely – won’t draw much attention. Plus, it’s a great way to see parts of the world you may feel uncomfortable exploring on your own. If you want to do things on your own, consider a day tour to familiarise yourself with a city and get to know the local way of life.

Trust your instincts

Solo travel is all about confidence. If you’re relaxed and self-assured on the street, you’re more likely to blend in. When you meet new people, don’t assume they’re all out to get you, but be sensible too and trust your gut. If it feels wrong, it probably is. Remember: the popular tourist areas are often the most well-lit and secure, but they’re often a juicier target for pickpockets and scammers. Just use your common sense; half of travel safety is simply being aware of your surroundings.

Are you thinking about travelling to India alone? Why not consider joining one of our small group tours? If you're thinking being led around with someone holding a flag think again! These are modern, immersive and fun adventure holidays giving you an experience you'll never forget!

On average, 50% of those who book with us are solo travellers. Each small group is made up of typically between 8 and 14 people with a mix of gender and age. The average age varies depending upon the particular adventure.

You'll have a guide who will help introduce everybody on day one before you embark on your holiday adventure. Included in the price is the guide, accommodation, often meals and activates as well as any gear, each specific adventure page will provide details.

During the adventure there is plenty of free time and no obligation to spend every minute of every day together. Below are some ideas and some examples of the adventures we have but please browse our website and do get in touch! We have an expert team on hand to help at ay time.

Hassle-free adventures

Our aim is to make it as easy and enjoyable as possible to experience unique trips at the best price, no matter if you travel on your own or as part of a group. You will be able to socialise, meet new people but also have some time to yourself throughout the holiday.

Accommodation made easy

We try to make this part as simple as possible. You will be paired with another traveller of the same sex to share a room during your adventures so you won’t have to pay anything extra. If you prefer your own room you can pay a little extra (we work hard to keep this as little we can) which we can arrange after making your booking, just let us know.

Authentic and affordable trips

We try to work with as many local providers as possible. It means we can offer you the biggest range of adventures and it enables you to see countries in a more unique and authentic way. Plus, we can keep the cost of the trip down by cutting out the middle man!

We work hard with our suppliers to minimize extra costs like single room supplements for solo travellers.

Like-minded travellers

Most trips are guided in small groups, usually made up of between 10 and 15 people. In these groups, half or more will be fellow solo travellers. You get to meet like-minded people who all have the same sense of adventure and thirst for exploring. You'll have a local tour leader to look after all of the group’s needs and logistics and ensure you have the best experience while you are away.

Independent travel

If you like to travel a bit more independently, we have a selection of tours that are self-guided. We will equip you with all the things you may need for your adventure and you can explore at your own pace. Again, we try to keep any single supplements as low as possible by working closely with our local partners.

Adventure Holidays For Singles

If you're single this type of holiday is fantastic, we would say that but they really are. We have loads of trips for different age ranges and interests. The small group adventures offer a social holiday for singles which provide an immediate group (or squad) to explore with. You'll certainly make friends for life.

Hope to hear from you soon.

How do I meet everyone in the group?

You'll meet everyone face to face on day one, typically meeting in your accommodation reception or bar at 18:00 but this can differ. The guide will be there too to provide some information and help with everyone getting to know one another.

Will I have my own room?

You can either share with someone of the same gender or if you'd prefer your own room you can select your room and pay a little more during the booking process.

Are there activities every day?

Each adventure will contain a mix of travel, experiences and free time. The idea is not to rush but to enjoy! there is enough that the children will be entertained!

Is the guide with us all the time?

When you're travelling then typically yes and for activities too. During free time the guide will not be with you but is always contactable.

What is the accommodation like?

The accommodation is usually 3 or 4 star. More details are on each trip page or in the brochure. You can always speak to our team who can provide much more information.

Are vegetarian food options available?

Yes, vegetarian food options are available on all tours. The guide can also point out great places to eat if meals are not included in the tour price.

Can I talk to someone to find out more?

Of course, we have an expert team on hand to talk to you.

Please contact us if you'd like to find out more by telephoning: UK - 44 0208 004 8886 US - 1 917 472-9385 All - 0333 006 2683 or email us on [email protected] or submit an enquiry on the website and we'll be in touch.

Will we require a Visa?

Maybe yes. Please see the latest travel advice from the FCO.

21 Challenges Faced by Solo Traveller

Solo travel can be a rewarding and empowering experience, but it also comes with its own set of challenges. Solo travel is the act of traveling alone without the company of friends or family. It can be a liberating and empowering experience, as it allows individuals to explore new places, cultures, and experiences on their own terms. However, it also comes with its own set of challenges such as safety concerns, loneliness, and navigating unfamiliar places.   Here are 21

Ten entire days. Ten full days of complete and silence far away from your regular life. Do you think it is worth achieving inner peace? I thought so. However, no talking at all is just one code of discipline for Vipassana – a form of meditation that’s been practiced in India for thousands of years. After overcoming all the second thoughts in order to learn Vipassana, I finally took a 10-day meditation course in Dharamkot, India. You want to know if I was scared?

How to Travel India: With a Group or Solo?

Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links, which means I make a small commission at no extra cost to you if you kindly choose to book via my links!

How to travel India… with or without a group… that is the question

When I found out I would be visiting India for two weeks as part of a project with the Goa Tourism, I fell into a predicament. I knew that if I was coming all the way to India, I needed to see more of the country than merely the state of Goa. At the same time, so many people had told me that India was unsafe to travel solo as a female, and I hadn’t been able to rope anyone into travelling with me.

Hence, the idea of doing a group tour in India popped into my head. I will admit, I was hesitant to look into this option at first. I have a love/ hate relationship when it comes to group travel. Over the past few years, I’ve done my fair share of group tours (albeit it, mostly for work).  Through my experience of travelling both in a group and independently, I’ve personally find that I prefer to travel solo or with one other person as I enjoy the freedom and flexibility of determining my own schedule.

However, India was very different from the places I’d travelled solo in the past. Knowing that solo travel in India (particularly as a female) was far from a walk in the park, I made the decision to go with a group tour with G Adventures  for my first visit. Below I’ve outlined all the positives and negatives of going on a group tour versus travelling solo through India. Hopefully it will help you if you are planning a trip to India and you are not sure which way to go!

Picking a Group Tour

I went on the  Uncover India- Delhi to Goa  trip with G Adventures, which was a 15-day tour which went through Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Tordi Sagar, Pushkar, Udaipur, Mumbai and Goa. The trip included accommodation, a tour leader throughout, transportation and some activities.

I picked this particular trip for a few reasons:

  • The route of the trip felt like a good introduction to India as it showcased a diverse mix of big and small cities and rural areas
  • It was G Adventure’s ‘YOLO’ style trip, meaning it was specifically designed for young people aged 18-35
  • It was one of the most affordable trips that G Adventures offers. The service level was considered ‘basic’, meaning we stayed in simple hotels, paid for most our own meals and caught local transport.

Why G Adventures?

I became fascinated by the tour company G Adventures  after reading Bruce Poon Tip’s book, Looptail (a great read for any budding entrepreneur). As a company that claims to have built its foundations on sustainable tourism, I was very interested to go on a G Adventures Trip and see these principles action. From my prior research, I discovered that G Adventures only uses local vendors for all their activities, meals and accommodation. In order to invest back into the local communities that the tours pass through, the company has also started numerous community development projects through their non-profit organization Planeterra . Based off what I experienced firsthand on my India tour, I was pleased to see that the tour company living up to its sustainable tourism model and for this reason, I would travel with G Adventures again.

Below are 6 reasons I decided to go on group tour through India instead of travelling solo:

1. ease and convenience.

I’m not going to lie, travelling full-time does make me a little lazy from time to time. If planning a regular trip is time-consuming and frustrating, planning a trip to India is at a whole new level. As they say, once you travel to India, you can travel anywhere. Going on a group tour meant EVERYTHING was organized for me in advance. This included accommodation, transport, walking tours, optional activities and places to eat. I just had to get to the initial meeting point and then I could switch off my brain for two weeks, unlike if I had decided to travel India solo and would have to plan the whole thing out.

The downside to having everything arranged for you is of course not having the freedom to go where you like when you like, removing the chance for spontaneity. This was particularly frustrating in certain situations, such as when I found places that I really enjoyed and would have loved to stay on longer. If I were travelling solo, I would have had the flexibility to do this, but as I was on a group tour, I was locked into the schedule they had set.

2. Local knowledge

Having a local tour leader to take us around was a major positive of travelling with a group as oppose to travelling solo. Our tour leader, Manu, worked so hard to make the trip run smoothly and was there to solve any problems we had. He provided a great overview of every place we visited and also taught us so many interesting things about Indian culture that we wouldn’t have known otherwise. He made sure we didn’t get ripped off when buying things, ensured every restaurant we ate at had a good level of hygiene, and even suggested which foods we should try.

I can’t pick out too many negatives to having a tour leader. The only thing I found frustrating was the fact we were taken to many ‘westernized’ Indian restaurants that were full of tourists. I did often find myself wanting to eat at more local, ‘hole-in-the-wall’ places so I could have the true Indian experience, rather than places that served both India and Western food. There is something very disarming about seeing pizza on the menu of an India restaurant. Having said this, I do have to give kudos to our tour leader as no one on our tour came down with serious food poisoning (which is always a possible hazard in India).

3. Activities

Another positive of being on tour was that there were some worthwhile optional activities arranged for us. I partook in some really unique experiences that I probably wouldn’t have thought to do had I not been on tour- things like cooking classes, watching a Bollywood film, hopping into a cycle rickshaw and going 4x4ing through sand dunes. The best experience of all was camel-riding through the desert. This entailed spending the evening around the bonfire, eating a feast cooked by the cameleers, watching gypsy dancers and magicians perform, and then falling asleep under the stars. Of course, these are all activities you could seek to do on your own, however, it’s obviously a lot easier having it all arranged for you!

As with any tour, there is a general schedule that needs to be adhered to. Having a schedule and pre-planned activities does make it difficult when there are things you want to do or places you want to go. We still got some free time on the tour we were on to do our own thing but as someone who is used to travelling solo, I was always wishing for more time to enjoy each place I was in, without worrying about having to be certain places at certain times.

4. Transport

One of the coolest part of tour I went on was getting to experience all the different forms of transport that locals actually. During the course of our 14-day tour, we traveled by sleeper trains, public buses, 4x4s, taxi, tuk-tuks, cycle rickshaws and even camels. Again, if I had been travelling solo, I might not have gotten to experience all these things.

Possible the biggest logistical nightmare of travelling India is navigating the chaotic public transport system.  The country simply does not have the infrastructure to support a population of over one billion, meaning public buses and trains are always overcrowded and overbooked. As a result, booking transport can be very difficult and has to be done well in advance. Going on a group tour saved me the nightmare of having to worry about transport.

When booking a group tour, it is important to be aware of the type of transport that will be used on your trip. Many tours these days will stuff you into a private coach, where you will end up spending the majority of time on your trip. Of course, this style of travel may suit you perfectly. Personally, if had I been stuck on a tour bus two weeks, I think I do not feel I would have gotten the same rich culture experience as I did catching local transport (even if it was a little uncomfortable at times!)

I’m sure you’ve heard it said a million times- India is not the safest place to travel solo, especially as a female. Naturally, travelling with a group made me feel much safer than if I had been travelling alone. At the end of the day, the knowledge that I had my tour leader and a whole tour group looking out for me was very comforting. When I was alone, as expected, I did find that I would attract a lot more male attention than when I was in a group.

India tends to get a bad rap when it comes to safety and there is a real stigma around travelling alone as a female. I did spend a few days in Delhi by myself and I also separated from the tour group quite often, and, personally, I never felt very unsafe or threatened. Of course, everywhere you go, there are bad people, and India is no exception. But that doesn’t mean that 99.99% of the population aren’t genuinely good, honest and kind people.

Whilst it is essential to remain street smart when travelling in India, it is also important to not become overly cautious and closed off to interacting with locals. If you have the mindset that everyone is out to get you, you can miss out on really special experiences. One of my favourite memories from India was the time I separated from the group and ended up sitting drinking chai tea and having a deep and meaningful chat with a shopkeeper for an hour. If I had been closed-off and fearful of being alone, I would have missed out on this very meaningful experience.

5. Affordability

To be honest, it’s hard to say if I would have saved money or spent more money when travelling on my own.  It was nice knowing that all my accommodation and transport had been paid for and that I only needed to budget for food and optional activities. The price of the tour was $1000 USD all together, so for a fifteen day tour it worked out to be about $100 a day, and I probably spent  $40 per day on top of that for food and activities. It would definitely be cheaper to travel on your own if you were staying in hostels and catching local transport everywhere, however we were staying in budget hotels and using a mix of local and private transport.

The tour didn’t include as many meals or activities as I had expected, and so I found myself spending more than planned. I later found out that the reason for this is that G Adventures offers different levels of trips and we were on the most basic level, meaning less activities and meals were included. There were many optional activities that everyone was expected to do anyway  (such as riding camels and sleeping under the stars in the desert), so it seemed strange to not include such things. Next time, I would rather pay extra for a tour that included more so I didn’t have to think so much about budgeting for everything. But again, that is just my laziness kicking in.

Compared to tours I have done in the past, this G Adventures tour did offer a lot of free time and activities and meals that were optional. As we were a fairly small group ( ten in total), most of the time everyone would opt to do the optional activities and eat together anyway. I liked the fact that the schedule wasn’t too jam-packed as I am the kind of person who needs my down time!

Obviously, the biggest negative to any type of group tour is ultimately the lack of freedom. The schedule is set, activities and meals are planned, transport is fixed. As I am a spontaneous person and enjoy my independence when I travel, this was the most difficult thing for me to come to terms with. Particularly when we were doing things like walking tours, I found being in a group really frustrating, as I obviously take a long time to take photos and so found I was always being rushed along (or making the group wait)! Again, this is just one of those things you have to accept when taking part in a group tour.

THE VERDICT:

Overall, I think I made the right decision to do a group tour for my first visit to India. The reality is that India is a difficult place to travel solo, particularly if it is your first time visiting and if you are a female (as much as I hate that gender comes into play). However, now that I’ve done a group tour and become better acquainted with the country, I would feel a lot more confident to travel India independently. I am already planning to revisit and explore this incredible country even more!

If you are interested in booking a group tour or just finding out more information about group tours through India, you can head over to the G Adventures website .  For the sake of full disclosure, I was lucky  enough to have G Adventures host me on the Uncover India Tour, however all opinions stated in this article are completely my own.

Have you travelled to India solo or on a group tour? I would love to hear your thoughts about which style of travel you prefer!

Explore the Mawsamai Cave, Seven Sister Falls, Dainthlen Waterfalls. Later return to your hotel in Umtyngar . Overnight at homestay

Day 04   Double Decker root bridge Trek +Drive to Shillong Start early today (by 7.30 am) and head towards Nongriat village. Which is the starting point for the legendry double decker living root bridge. It’s a moderate trek and one has to climb up and down a total of 3500 steps (approx.). Once you go about 50 steps down - you feel cut off from the world and totally immersed in peaceful greenery. All along this trail, there are a variety of small shops selling bottled water, chips, fruit, and other refreshments. These piece of manmade structure (with the help of nature) is a must-visit and has many stunning views with amazing, lush green surroundings and a highly biodiverse flora and fauna. However, it requires a lot of stamina, especially while coming up.

After the trek, return to Shillong.

In the evening, enjoy a nice warm Bonfire (subject to availability and weather).

Marriott’s Ritz-Carlton in Jaipur. Plus: Skift India Summit Starts – India Report

Bulbul Dhawan , Skift

March 19th, 2024 at 11:00 PM EDT

The Skift India Newsletter is your go-to platform for all news related to travel, tourism, airlines, and hospitality in India.

The debut Skift India Summit is off and running! It’s a sign of the enormous possibilities of post-pandemic travel in a changing India.

On March 20, we are bringing together the best minds in the travel business from India and across the globe at The Leela Ambience, Gurugram, to discuss the future of travel in the country. We are focusing on three main themes: The new outbound Indian traveler; the massive potential in a market of 1.4 billion people; and the steadily growing inbound tourist market into India. We’ll have coverage throughout the day on Skift.com and highlights in tomorrow’s India Report.

– Peden Doma Bhutia

Marriott International Signs First Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Jaipur

Marriott International has announced the signing of its debut Ritz-Carlton property in Jaipur, Maharashtra. The 250-key hotel is expected to open in 2028. Currently, the hospitality company operates five hotels in the city. Rajeev Menon, president, Asia Pacific excluding China at Marriott International, said that the Indian market is flourishing and its interest in luxury travel is leading to a growth in demand for global luxury brands.

Marriott has two Ritz-Carltons in India, in Bengaluru and Pune. A third one has been signed in Shimla and is slated for a 2029 opening. Skift earlier reported that Marriott has plans to open 12 hotels in India this year. After Moxy’s debut in India earlier this year, Menon said that the company would be looking at possibilities of launching more brands in the country.

IndiGo Announces Operations in Lakshadweep

India’s largest airline IndiGo is adding Agatti in the Lakshadweep archipelago in its network. Starting March 31, the carrier will fly between Bengaluru and Agatti daily. The island group marks IndiGo’s 88th domestic destination. At present, only Alliance Air operates to the Lakshadweep archipelago.

The move not only marks the expansion of IndiGo’s network, but also significantly impacts the aviation and tourism landscape of Lakshadweep. Earlier this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the island group’s beauty in an effort to boost its tourism industry. The government is looking to develop a new airfield on Minicoy Island for military and commercial aircraft. Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) also has two Taj resorts coming up at the destination to enhance accommodation options for travelers.

Indians Exploring Diverse Experiences, Spiritual Destinations For Holi, Easter Getaways

The festivals of Holi and Easter are mere days apart this year, offering Indians an opportunity to travel. Hence, they are exploring domestic as well as international destinations. According to Booking.com data, travelers are looking for diverse experiences, as aside from metros, the website has seen significant uptick in searches for leisure destinations such as Udaipur, Jaipur, Goa, Lonavala, and Manali. The online travel agency also noted that spiritual destinations including Vrindavan, Rishikesh, Puri, and Varanasi were also among the most-searched destinations.

Indians also searched international destinations for travel between March 23 and 31. Dubai was the most-searched destination, followed by SIngapore, Bangkok, Makkah in Saudi Arabia, and London. Santosh Kumar, country manager for India, Sri Lanka, Maldives and Indonesia at Booking.com said that the company’s Travel Predictions 2024 research revealed that 85% of Indian travelers feel more alive when they are on vacation.

Air India Express Summer Flights Frequency Grows 25%

Air India Express has increased its flight frequencies to navigate the anticipated surge in demand during summer. The airline is set to operate more than 360 daily flights. Its 2024 summer schedule has a 25% increase in domestic flights as compared to last year. For international flights, this increase is 20%, the airline said.

Air India Express is a subsidiary of former national carrier Air India, and it offers budget flights to travelers. The airline, which is being merged with AirAsia India (now AIX Connect), is planning to operate 40% more flights in the 2024-25 financial year . It is also expecting to complete the acquisition of 50 white tail Boeing 737 Max aircraft by the end of this year.

SpiceJet Enhances Fleet For Upcoming Peak Season

Budget carrier SpiceJet has finalized lease agreements for 10 aircraft to enhance its capacity for the summer schedule. The airline has also received three airframes as part of recent settlements with key aircraft lessors, the company said in an exchange filing last week.

In a subsequent exchange filing , the company said that it had signed a lease agreement to introduce two wide-body A340 aircraft in its fleet. These two aircraft have been earmarked for the upcoming Haj operations, and will fly from Srinagar and Guwahati. With this move, SpiceJet is seeking to match the revenue of INR 3.37 billion ($41 million) that it generated from Haj operations last year.
