Five-time Grammy winner Keb’ Mo’, touring this time with his band, performs one special show at The Factory Theatre, Sydney.

With five GRAMMYs, 14 Blues Foundation Awards, and a groundbreaking career spanning nearly 50 years under his belt, Keb’ Mo’s got nothing left to prove. Just don’t tell him that. “I may be turning 70,” Keb’ reflects, “but I’m still breathing and I’m still hungry. I’m still out there going for it every single day.”

Born and raised in Compton, Keb’ began his remarkable journey at the age of 21, when he landed his first major gig playing with Jefferson Airplane violinist Papa John Creach. For the next 20 years, Keb’ would work primarily behind the scenes, establishing himself as a respected guitarist, songwriter, and arranger with a unique gift for linking the past and present in his evocative playing and singing.

Though he recorded a one-off album in 1980 under his birth name, Kevin Moore, it wasn’t until 1994 that he would introduce the world to Keb’ Mo’ with the release of his widely acclaimed self-titled debut. Critics were quick to take note of Keb’s modern, genre-bending take on old school sounds, and two years later, he garnered his first GRAMMY Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album with Just Like You . In the decades to come, Keb’ would take home four more GRAMMY Awards; top the Billboard Blues Chart seven times; perform everywhere from Carnegie Hall to The White House; collaborate with many including Taj Mahal, Willie Nelson, Bonnie Raitt, The Chicks, and Lyle Lovett; have compositions recorded and sampled by artists as diverse as B.B. King, Zac Brown, and BTS; release signature guitars with both Gibson and Martin; compose music for television series like Mike and Molly , Memphis Beat , B Positive , and Martha Stewart Living; and earn the Americana Music Association’s 2021 award for Lifetime Achievement in Performance.

Bringing it all back home, Keb looked to his own story for inspiration on his captivating new album, Good To Be , artfully linking the grit and groove of his Compton roots with strum and twang of his more recently adopted hometown of Nashville, TN, where he’s lived and worked for the last eleven years. Drawing on country, folk, blues, and soul, the collection transcends genre and geography, weaving together a joyful, heartwarming, and relentlessly optimistic tapestry that manages to encompass the entirety of this once-in-a-generation artist’s larger-than-life career.

Keb’ Mo’- The Subterania, Ladbroke Grove - 22/01/20

I reviewed Keb’ Mo’ for Blues In Britain when he played solo at Union Chapel in July 2019. I commented that Keb’ gave an almost perfect performance on that occasion but for the hand clapping ritual on too many numbers. I pleaded that when returning to London he brings a decent rhythm section. He obviously wasn’t aware of my plea but complied anyway. He returned six months later with his band and boy what a band he had. On bass was the very funky Stan Sargeant, on keyboards David M Rodgers, on drums with very snazzy specticles Marcus Finnie and on rhythm guitar Casey Wasner.

This was my first visit to The Subterania, Ladbroke Grove since 1991 when I then had to ask a certain John Martyn for directions to the venue where he was headlining later that evening. I have to say the staff were extremely polite and welcoming, which is not always the case especially with jobs worth security personnel, and the venue was as I remembered it but with far superior sound.

"Better Everyday" was a perfect feel good opener with the lyric "Hello Everybody, How You Doing Today?, Can I Pour You All A Cup Of Coffee, I Think I Got Something To Say". Keb' Mo' immediately connected to his audience and he certainly had attracted a devoted following on the night. The encouraging thing for me was the mix of old and young which is a rare thing these days. I should mention that the audience was impeccably behaved throughout which was obviously appreciated by the artist as he acknowledged this courtesy.

Keb' had brought a fine selection of guitars along and his National ResoRocket was employed next for "Muddy Water" from his 1998 Grammy Award winning album "Slow Down". Keb's young band was feeding off his cool personality and "Life Is Beautiful" probably best describes his relationship with life.

Things got funky with the excellent "Government Cheese" allowing the band to really came out of it's shell, especially Stan Sargeant on five string bass and David M Rodgers on keyboards. Perhaps life has not always been so beautiful for Keb' as the title refers to a processed cheese provided to welfare beneficiaries and the like in the United States until the 1980s.

Keb' gave the band a short break in order to take the opportunity to go solo and "I Remember You" ,the first track on his most recent and highly acclaimed album "Oklahoma", was first up. Keb' was not afraid to take time out and ensure his resonator was perfectly in tune, a wrong note is a bad note as he said. He suggested sarcastically that he was sometimes accompanied by his keyboard player for the next number "Just Like You" but as this didn't prompt him to join him on stage, Keb' suggested he must be out back smoking.

Bass and drums accompanied Keb' Mo' for the title track from his 2006 release "Suitcase". Stan Sargeant was given licence to excel with a wonderful bass solo before leaving Keb' to close his solo spot with "Am I Wrong".

The full band returns and we were treated to "Rita" a story of how Keb' had at some stage in his life messed up real bad and I am guessing he let the love of his life slip through his hands. "Remain Silent" followed before the highlight of the evening for me "Dangerous Mood" delta blues at it's best with Keb' showcasing his full vocal range. Beforehand Keb' took a well deserved sip of water, the drums kicked in and Keb' suggested this was going to be his drinking water song or perhaps he was like a stripper as he too needs a beat.

"Somebody Hurt You" closely followed by "The Worst Is Yet To Come" brought the main set to a close but there was no doubt these guys were not going to be allowed to leave West London without an encore. Keb' and his band kindly obliged with the ever popular "She Just Wants To Dance" and bringling a two hour set to a close "A Better Man".

A wonderful evening and I feel privaliged to have seen this supremely talented blues man twice in a short space of time, firstly with a solo performance and on this occasion with a full band. Keb' Mo' always performs with a smile on his face and he clearly enjoys the hand that he has been dealt in this life. This is very infectious as could be witnessed on the faces of both audience and band members.
