Is the Train Route From Zurich to Zermatt Scenic?

The Intercity trains  from Zurich to Bern are  not scenic trains . These are fast trains that travel from one big city to another, whose main purpose is to transport passengers as quickly as possible. These trains can reach high speeds, particularly while traversing the Zurich to Bern section.  You can still see the scenery during the ride, but it won’t be slow and steady like other scenic trains.

Starting Visp , the route starts becoming more beautiful. The trains also drive slower. However, if you want to go for scenic trains with huge panoramic windows, I would suggest taking the Glacier Express from Zermatt. The  Glacier Express  runs between  Zermatt  in Valais and   St. Moritz   in Graubünden over 291 bridges and 91 tunnels. This train route takes you from the home of the Matterhorn to St. Moritz, a fancy mountain resort in Engadine.

Other Scenic Trains

In case you would like to check out other scenic trains, then there are more scenic trains recommended below. These are the  Golden Pass Line,  the  Glacier Express,  and   the  Bernina Express.  Another interesting train is the Historical Train that goes from Davos to Filisur.

Your other options in detail are the following:

  • Glacier Express  – Glacier Express   is a long journey that starts from Zermatt, home of Matterhorn. It then traverses 291 bridges and 91 tunnels before stopping in St. Moritz. Both Zermatt and St. Moritz are beautiful mountain resorts worthy of a longer stay. The Glacier Express   passes by several idyllic mountain villages.
  • Bernina Express  – Bernina Express is another train route that begins in  Chur . Chur is the oldest alpine city in Switzerland and is worth visiting. This train route spans 196 bridges. It goes through 55 tunnels and passes 20 beautiful villages in Switzerland. For you to go on this scenic train, you will have to go from Zurich or Lucerne to Chur first.
  • Historical Train Davos to Filisur – May through October, vintage carriages are pulled by the century-old crocodile locomotive from Davos Platz to Filisur . Zurich to Zermatt: 10 Tips for Getting There by Train

Zurich to Zermatt - Switzerland Travel Tips

The trip from Zurich to Zermatt is one of my personal favorite train rides. I first made the trip down to Zermatt when my wife and I were spending a week of our honeymoon there. Needless to say, we immediately fell in love with Switzerland.

As it is with all Swiss rail travel, this is a relatively painless, straightforward trip. The most direct route takes about three and a half hours and involves only a single transfer. It’s also easy to take a less direct, more scenic route, depending on how much time you have.

These ten tips will help you with some of the most common questions and concerns. Some are general Swiss train tips. Others are specific to the Zurich to Zermatt journey.

Whether you’re a first-timer or a Swiss travel pro, these tips are good things to keep in mind when you’re hopping on a train and making your way down to the Matterhorn.

#1 Buy Your Ticket Before Boarding

This is an important one, regardless if you are a first-timer or if you have previous experience with Swiss rail from years back.

It used to be that, like with many railways, you could simply hop on a Swiss (SBB) train and buy your ticket on-board. At that time, railway workers would make their way around the train for passengers to purchase tickets from. This is no longer the case.

Today, almost all SBB trains are self-check. This means that conductors will not necessarily make their way around the train after it departs and it’s possible that no one will check your ticket.

However, the railways frequently send in crews to do random ticket checks and you’ll be in for a hefty fine if you’re found without one. An honest mistake of assuming you can purchase a ticket on-board could easily turn into a very expensive ride.

Save yourself from a potential headache and purchase your ticket at the station before you intend to board. You can use a kiosk or purchase at a counter. Either way, it will only take a moment and it could save you from losing a chunk of cash before your trip even truly begins.

#2 Download the SBB App

The Swiss Federal Railways has their own app and even though it does have some quirks, it’s a great tool to have at your disposal.

First of all, the app gives you quick access to all of the timetables. This is way easier than trying to hunt them all down on the website or on Google. They’re all laid out in blocks and you can click/swipe your way into a ticket in a matter of seconds.

SBB Mobile App Screenshot - Switzerland Train Tips

You can purchase all of your tickets (and Swiss rail cards/passes) within the app. All of them will be kept on the app, eliminating the need for a printed physical ticket.

There are a ton of other features like sharing your itinerary through WhatsApp, automatic suggestions for alternative connections in the event of a missed train, and even an alarm that will wake you upon arrival. Quite a few little things add up to add some nice quality of life features for Swiss rail travel.

Here’s a link to the SBB mobile app’s web page . It provides the complete list of features and additional info.

#3 Consider a First Class Ticket During Busy Season

I’m a fan of upgrading to First Class tickets on Swiss trains any time of year, but even more so when things are busy. Ski season, for example, can sometimes cause things to be a bit congested in Second Class. That said, even busy Swiss trains are quite a bit more comfortable than the vast majority of what you’ll deal with elsewhere. First Class is just the cherry on top.

If it’s not busy on the train, Second Class will be perfectly fine for the vast majority of travelers. The difference between First and Second isn’t nearly as dramatic as it is in most other countries. Just keep in mind that Zermatt is a very popular destination when ski season is at its peak.

#4 Don’t Be Late!

This one is short and sweet and it applies to all Swiss public transit: Don’t be late.

Unlike many other railways, Swiss railways are very efficient in their operation. Things tend to move like clockwork. That means that you shouldn’t even assume that you can be a minute late and still make your train. You’ll quickly learn that you’ll be promptly left in the dust.

Fortunately, you never have to wait long for another train in Switzerland if you do happen to miss a connection. Many routes will have another train available in a matter of minutes. The longer waits you could possibly encounter are almost never more than about an hour.

#5 Make a Quick Stop in Bern

Bern is an absolutely perfect spot for a half-day trip and the main route from Zurich to Zermatt cuts right through Bern. The stop is an easy one and it’s a lot of fun.

Bern Switzerland - Zurich to Zermatt

The best thing about a quick stop in Bern is that the train station is right in the middle of the best part of Bern, the Aldstadt (Old Town). The Aldstadt is Bern’s medieval city center and one big UNESCO World Heritage site. Incredible cathedrals, Renaissance fountains, and other architectural marvels abound in this beautiful city.

Great food is also a recurring theme in Bern. You’ll have no trouble at all finding a good meal at any number of outstanding restaurants.

Almost all of Bern’s best sites, attractions, and restaurants are at most a 10 or 15 minute walk from the train station. The Aldstadt is definitely one of the most walkable destinations in Switzerland, so there’s no reason not to check it out if you have a few hours to spare while traveling to Zermatt.

#6 Opt for the Glacier Express for a More Scenic Trip

There is more than one way to get to Zermatt from Zurich. The most common route is the one that passes through Bern, but if you don’t mind taking your time, there’s another route that offers one of the most beautiful train experiences in the world.

The Glacier Express is a panoramic train that offers up some of the most amazing views on the planet. It’s the slowest express train in the world, allowing you to take it all in.

Glacier Express Train - Swiss Travel Tips

The Glacier Express route spans 150+ miles, starting in St. Moritz and going all the way to Zermatt. It’s split into four sections: St. Mortiz to Chur, Chur to Andermatt, Andermatt to Brig, and Brig to Zermatt. If you’re adding it to your Zurich to Zermatt trip, you’ll be taking a regular SBB train from Zurich to Chur and hopping on the Glacier Express there. This is perfect, as you only miss one leg of Glacier Express route (St. Moritz to Chur). The best part of the trip is from Chur on anyway.

Again, this is truly one of the most incredible train experiences in the world. Your camera will stay glued to your hands as you meander through vivid mountain passes and valleys.

First Class is something I highly recommend on the Glacier Express. This is a special trip and the extra comfort is 100% worth the premium.

You can visit the Official Glacier Express website to get more info or to book your trip.

#7 Be Ready to Transfer Quickly in Visp

The main train route from Zurich to Zermatt includes a connection in Visp, Switzerland. When you take a look at your ticket timetable, it’s very likely that you’ll notice that it’s a very quick (usually about 10 minutes) connection.

This isn’t a big deal, but it pays to be prepared to quickly hop off one train and quickly hop on the other. It can be stressful when things are busy and you’re trying to get switch trains in such a short amount of time.

Right before your train pulls into the Visp station, collect your luggage and head for the doors. This will allow you to exit the moment the doors open and eliminate the stress involved with quickly trying to collect your belongings without forgetting anything.

You’ll need to go down a flight of stairs (or a ramp). From there, you’ll go under the train tracks to a platform on the other side. The signs will make it easy to find the right one. The walk will take only take you about 3 minutes or so.

#8 Protect Your Belongings

Swiss railways are among the safest in the world. Incidents occur at a much lower rate than much of the rest of the world. However, this can sometimes lull people into complacency when it comes to paying attention and protecting themselves.

In the years following Switzerland’s entry into the Schengen Area (a collection of European countries that allow for easy travel without border security or the need for a visa/passport), pickpockets have become more common. They are still not nearly as much of a problem as they are elsewhere, but they do still exist.

Visp is the station at which you should be the most careful, as it’s a spot that’s often frequented by pickpockets. The commonly frantic connections and tight spaces make it a prime spot for ne’er-do-wells to take advantage.

Just keep your wits about you and pay attention to your luggage and pockets. A little bit of common sense goes a long way.

#9 Take Advantage of Your Window

Your window is your friend. You’re going to be covering a lot of ground on the train, passing through some of the most beautiful places in Switzerland. Even the most basic train routes will provide you with some great views.

Swiss trains are clean and comfortable. Unless your train car is packed with loud travelers, most experiences can be very relaxing. It’s a great opportunity to put down the phone for a while and get a good taste of the Swiss countryside.

So don’t keep your head down for an entire trip!

#10 Ask Your Zermatt Hotel to Pick You Up at the Station

You’re probably well aware at this stage of your planning that Zermatt is totally car-free. You won’t find a single regular motor vehicle on the streets. Instead, you’ll find tiny electric taxis that look like shrunken buses.

Taxi trips around Zermatt are quick and efficient, but they are expensive relative to how short the trips are. 99% of the time, you’d rather walk in Zermatt, but probably not with all of your luggage.

To streamline the process, call your hotel before you arrive at the station and ask them to send a taxi for you. Plenty of hotels in Zermatt will provide this for you free of charge. One less thing to worry about when you’re weary from travel!

Other Ticket Providers

train journey zurich to zermatt

SBB is the main national rail operator in Switzerland, but tickets for journeys by the other significant operators including BLS and SOB can be be booked on the SBB website.

SBB also sells tickets for journeys to many destinations which involve a combination of SBB trains and services provided by the many independent operators who serve the Alpine resort towns. However, if you will be making a long-distance return day trip, look out for he possibility of SaverDay passes being cheaper than tickets.

Though if you download the SBB app, booking tickets on SBB's mobile services can be simper than using the website. Also watch out for the fact that booking international tickets can be comparatively quirky.

Omio is an online ticket agency which offers tickets for rail journeys in France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy and Spain.

The three key advantages of using Omio are

  • it offers prices in multiple currencies
  • it usually offers price comparison with other modes of travel including flights and buses
  • when visiting Europe, you can book journeys in multiple countries in one transaction.

The disadvantage of booking with Omio is that it often adds a booking fee to the final price; therefore when it does so without offering a price advantage, SMTJ doesn't tend to offer Omio as a booking option.

Happy rail Guide

Happy Rail is a Netherlands rail ticket agency which sells tickets for both national and international journeys within a range of countries including Belgium France, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland.

Other forms of payment include Visa debit cards will incur a fee.

Travel Information

Zermatt is one of the more distant ski resorts from Zurich, but it's comparatively easy to make the journey by train.

The connecting tine between trains at Visp will be around 6 mins so booking end-2-end tickets for the entire journey on SBB's ticketing service, or travelling with a day pass which can be used on any train, is recommended. If you opt to buy tickets for the train on to Zermatt on arrival in Visp it's likely that you will have to take a later train on Zermatt.

The 6 min connection in Visp is virtually guaranteed so it should still be a comparatively stress-free transfer.

From Zurich Hb station:

These trains usually depart from gleis (platforms/tracks) 31 and 32 in the lower level part of Zurich HB station. Note that these trains should arrive in Zurich HB station around 7 mins before they are due to depart, so keep an eye on the departure time and don't rush to board by the nearest door (if you don't have to).

From Zurich Flughafen/Airport:

These trains on route IC 8 depart from Zurich Flughafen/Airport station 11 mins before they depart from the city centre station; Zurich HB

Journey Features

Good to know.

Final Destination: Brig

The double deck IC trains are used on this route. These trains use the 'higher' speed line between Olten and Bern and they then reverse direction on departure from Bern station. So if you want to see these views of the Thunersee, take a seat on the right when boarding in Zurich.

These trains use the 'higher' speed line between Olten and Bern and they then reverse direction on departure from Bern station So if you want to see the views of the Thunersee, take a seat on the right when boarding in Zurich.

Now that these trains use the Lotschberg Base Tunnel this journey is not as scenic as it once was. But from the left of the train (when facing the direction of travel) there are views over the Thunersee between Thun and Speiz.

On departure from Thun station:

And then on departure from Speiz station:

Though not only was that video captured on a different, more sunny, day, it was taken when travelling in the opposite direction. It's been included here to showcase, what you will see from the right on this part of the journey, when heading south.

Then after exiting the Lotschberg Base Tunnel, the train will travel through a steep valley for the final part of the journey on to Brig.

In Zermatt the train from Visp will arrive at the MGB station, which is across the street from the CGB station for trains on to  Gornergrat .

Booking Tickets:

Tickets can be booked online for this end-to-end journey which involves taking a SBB train + the train on to Zermatt which is operated by MGB.

Online bookings open: up to six months ahead of the travel date

‘Individual tickets’ can be used on any train(s) on your travel date, but they tend to be comparatively expensive.

Supersaver tickets are cheaper, the portion of the journey by the SBB train can be discounted by up to 50%, but these tickets are train departure specific. If you book a Supersaver ticket and a flight delay etc, causes you to miss a train you are booked on to, you will have to book another full-price ‘Individual Ticket(s). You can then apply for a refund of the Supersaver ticket, but the application costs CHF 10.

Hence it’s worth comparing the ticket price of a journey with the price(s) of Saver Day Passes; they might save you money and can also allow for a less stressful journey.

Using Saver Day Passes:

Now that the Swiss Transfer tickets have been discontinued a Saver Day Pass may save you money, if you can book at least a couple of weeks ahead (usually), so that you can obtain the pass at a discounted price.

They can be cheaper than tickets for the end-to-end journey, though they are more likely to be a money saver if you will be making a day return trip between Zurich and Zermatt, even if you can book in advance.

They can be used on;

  • the trains between Zurich Fughafen/Airport or Zurich HB and Visp
  • the trains between Visp and Zermatt

They are not train specific, so can still be used in the event of a journey to Switzerland being delayed. Though as they’re only valid for one day’s travel, the clue is the name, if you will be travelling back on another date, you’ll need to purchase another Saver Day Pass for your return journey.

They need to be booked at least a day ahead of your travel date, so won't be an option if you book tickets at the station on arrival in Switzerland. They're also cheaper the further ahead that you book.

Zurich to Zermatt by car

As a car-free resort, you may well be wondering how to get to Zermatt by car – or indeed, can you drive to Zermatt? The trip from Zurich to Tasch near Zermatt typically takes between 3 and 4 hours and is fairly direct, but you cannot drive directly into Zermatt itself.

However, if you plan to travel around Switzerland by car, it is still possible to reach Zermatt.

There are a couple of different routes between Zurich and Zermatt so when renting a car ( check rates here ), we recommend you select one with satellite navigation and to choose the route which suits you best.

There are two main routes. You can travel via Andermatt (purple marker on the map below), or via Kandersteg and the Lotschberg Tunnel (green marker on the map below).

Map showing various road routes between Zurich and Zermatt

The route via the Lotschberg Tunnel is especially interesting as you need to drive your car onto a special train for the 16-minute trip through the tunnel.

Two trains operate every hour in each direction and fares start from CHF 25 for a car and up to 9 passengers.

By purchasing your ticket online in advance, you not only save money but will also have access to the fast-entry lane.

All passengers remain inside their vehicle whilst travelling through the tunnel and it is quite a unique experience to be sitting inside a vehicle on the back of a moving train.

Arrival at Zermatt

If you’re arriving by car, you’ll have to park in the nearby village of Tasch, where there are plenty of purpose-built car parks. One of these is right by the station, from which you can then take the shuttle train to Zermatt.

The trip takes 12 minutes, and trains depart every 20 minutes throughout the day.

Parking in Tasch costs around CHF 16 for 24 hours, and the Täsch to Zermatt shuttle train ticket costs about CHF 17 return for a standard adult fare.

Train tickets can be purchased at the station either from ticket machines (which have instructions in English) or you can buy online .

Electric taxis wait outside the Zermatt train station

Many Zermatt hotels provide their own transfer from the Zurich train station by electric bus, or there is an electric taxi stop right outside the station.

If you do hire a rental car from outside Switzerland, do note that a road tax sticker must be clearly shown on the windscreen. This ‘vignette’ must be purchased as soon as you cross the Swiss border. It costs around CHF 40 and can be purchased at any fuel station.

Zurich to Zermatt Travel Options (Train & Car)

zermatt matterhorn starlight

Zermatt is one of the most stunning towns in the Swiss Alps. And with the Matterhorn towering over this fairytale village , things are off to a good start.

With epic skiing, hiking and mountain biking along with world-class restaurants, mountain hotels and spas, you are going to have a memorable time here no matter how you choose to spend your time.

If you are heading to Zermatt from Zurich, here are the best options to get there in no time.

How To Get From Zurich To Zermatt

The ideal way to get to Zermatt is by train because it is a car-free town and you cannot drive directly to it.

From Zurich HB (Main Station) it takes 3 hours and 12 minutes to get to Zermatt train station. You only have to change trains once in Visp.

If you come directly from Zurich Airport, you have to catch the train underground at the Zurich Flughafen station to Visp at 45 minutes past the hour, change in Visp also, and arrive in Zermatt 3 hours and 45 minutes later.

There are other connections from the airport , however, this one is the shortest.

How Much Does It Cost By Train From Zurich To Zermatt?

The prices of a train ticket from Zurich to Zermatt can vary depending on the class and any discounts that you may have.

Tip: If you have the Swiss Travel Pass, this train ride is completely covered.

Here are the general prices:

There are two main routes that will take you from Zurich to Zermatt by car.

  • You can travel via the Lötschberg Tunnel (one of the famous tunnels in Switzerland ), which is an experience worth doing once since you have to drive your car onto a train, which then whisks you through the tunnel. This is the fastest way to Zermatt by car.
  • Another scenic route is over the Brunnigpass, then over the Grimselpass, then down the Rhone valley. I have done this a number of times and it is fantastic, but it is only open in from early summer until the snow comes in October/November.
  • Another option is to drive via Andermatt and then take the Furka car train to avoid the Furka pass, which will also be closed in winter.
  • Lastly, you can drive via the Gotthard tunnel and then via the Furka, however, I would avoid the Gotthard tunnel at all costs because there is always massive traffic jams there. You can drive over the pass instead, however, this adds a lot of time to your trip.

where can you drop off a rental car in Zermatt? Driving from Zurich to Zermatt, dropping car, then glacier express to St. Moritz.

Then getting a car driving to Halstatt Austria any ideas??

Unfortunately Zermatt is a car-free town, so there is nowhere near there to drop off rentals. The closest place I could find is Sion. From there you would have to catch a couple of trains to get to Zermatt. Switzerland is a very train-oriented country.

Is this Train Route From Zurich to Zermatt Scenic?

The Intercity trains that travel from Zurich to Bern are not specifically designed for scenic journeys. These trains are built to transport passengers quickly and efficiently between the two cities.

As a result, they reach high speeds, particularly while traversing the Zurich to Bern section. While you can still see the scenery during the ride, it’s not the slow and steady experience you would get on a dedicated scenic train.

However after Bern, the train leads to the Bernese Highlands and the landscape becomes correspondingly more picturesque

After Visp, the journey continues through the valleys of the Valais into the mountains high up to Zermatt. The trains also drive slower, allowing for a better view of the surrounding landscape. If you’re looking for a truly scenic train experience, there are other options available.

Scenic Train – Glacier Express to Zermatt

When it comes to traveling from Zurich-Zermatt, the Glacier Express is an option that is worth considering, even though it may not be the most direct route. This spectacular journey is a highlight of any holiday to Switzerland and one of the most scenic trips you can take anywhere, offering breathtaking views of the Swiss Alps.

To experience this option, travelers will first need to make their way from Zurich HB or airport to Chur, which takes around an hour and 15 minutes. Once in Chur, you can board the Glacier Express and begin your journey to the alpine village.

The train will take you through Andermatt and Brig, providing an opportunity to see the picturesque Swiss Alps in all its glory.

Zermatt from Zurich by Car

However, as a car-free resort, travelers may wonder how to reach it by car. Renting a car and driving to Zermatt is still possible, but you cannot drive directly into village itself.

You’ll need to park in the nearby village of Täsch and take a shuttle train to Zermatt. Parking in Tasch costs around CHF 16.- for 24 hours and the return shuttle train tickets costs about CHF 17.- for a standard adult fare. In the village itself are electric taxi and bus services available.

The trip from Zurich to Täsch by car typically takes between 3 and 4 hours. There are two main routes between Zurich and Zermatt, via Andermatt or via Kandersteg and the Lötschberg Tunnel.

The route via the Lotschberg Tunnel is especially interesting as you need to drive your car onto a special train for the 16-minute trip through the tunnel.

Is there a direct train from Zurich to Zermatt?

There are no direct train services. While traveling from Zurich to Zermatt by train, a transfer at Visp is required, with all intercity connections involving this change.

Can you do a day trip from Zurich to Zermatt?

Yes, a day trip from Zurich is feasible. With a travel time of just over 3 hours, you can depart Zurich early, for instance, taking the first connection at 06:02 AM, arriving in Zermatt by 09:14 AM. This schedule allows ample time to explore Zermatt and its surrounding mountains. However, don’t forget to plan for your return journey.

Final Thoughts

Zermatt, the abode of the renowned Matterhorn and a paradise for ski enthusiasts, is easily accessible from Zurich by train services. However, before embarking on your alpine adventure, consider a few key points. The intercity trains from Zurich to Bern are not scenic, so for a more picturesque journey, opt for the Glacier Express. Additionally, direct car access to Zermatt is not possible; parking in Täsch and taking a shuttle train is necessary. Lastly, evaluate if a Swiss Travel Pass or Half Fare card could be economically beneficial for your journey.

In conclusion, based on our experiences during recent visits to Zermatt, traveling by train is the most straightforward option. While driving to Zermatt is possible, it involves parking in Täsch and then taking a taxi or another train, which adds waiting time and extra costs. The train journey, with just a single transfer in Visp, offers relative comfort.

You got 4 reasonable connections that evening.

train journey zurich to zermatt

Getting through customs takes all of 10 seconds to walk through the green (nothing to declare) corridor. (Spot checks at times.) Getting through immigration depends on staffing levels at the airport. It takes me anywhere from 3-7 minutes. But it depends on the time of year.

Check timetable for example at http://www.sbb.ch/en - last trains for arriving shortly before midnight at Zermatt leave the airport shortly after 20:00. Check also statistics on delays for planned flight to Zurich .

Then if your plane has arrived at the E gates you have to take the shuttle train to the main building. Most long haul flights come into the E gates.

Allow an hour to get to the station with your checked baggage. And be pleased when it takes less….(last time I flew in from North America I was on the station platform 30mns after landing…but it was 0600 and ours was the first to land that day AND I am Swiss so don’t have to wait a lot for passport control.

Local News | Model train show brings memories, wonder to La Grange

Henry Norvilas, 4, enjoys the model trains Saturday in La Grange. (Jesse Wright)

For one day on Saturday, hundreds of visitors in La Grange got a chance to take a peek into the past at the annual All American Railroad Show, a sprawling display of bustling downtowns, classic cars and a look at what once connected most American towns and cities — the railroad.

The rolling stock included both freight and passenger, steam, diesel, and even a few electric trains, each with an era-accurate design and logo, a sort of alternate reality set in 1:87 scale. Size aside, the model trains differed from their real-life forebearers mostly in their destination.

All the live-long day in the Lyons Township High School North Campus gym, the trains went on and on down the track, circling through towns, mountains and freight yards. The sun never set and the little engines never yielded to a highway, a pipeline, or an airplane and their tracks never faced a future as a bike path or a hiking trail.

All types of model trains were on display Saturday at the All American Train Show Saturday.

These trains aren’t going anywhere and they’ll be back again next year, on time and ready to go and when they come back, they’ll attract hundreds of more kids, eager to imagine and hundreds of adults, eager to remember.

For the event organizers and the enthusiasts who displayed the models, the work is the product of decades of love and a fascination that began decades ago. Patrick Golden, the coordinator of the All-American Railroad Show and a member of the DuPage Division of the National Model Railroad Association, said he got his first taste in 1961 when his dad brought home a Lionel model train set.

“He always said it was for us kids, but I realized later it was otherwise,” Golden said. “Well, he bought the Lionel set but then from the Lionel, I branched off in the HO gauge trains and model trains, once it’s in your blood it’s in your blood.”

Like any other hobby, it can cost as much in time and coin as a collector is willing to invest and the set-ups on Saturday reflected some serious investments on both fronts but that’s not the point of the show. Some meets offer swaps or opportunities to buy parts or cars, but the All American Railroad Show, though it is a fundraiser for the DuPage railroad club, doesn’t allow any selling or trading. The event raises its money from ticket and snack sales while the trains are for display only, a main attraction for the curious, the kids as well as the collectors.

“It’s just because our goal is families here,” said Golden. “You see a jillion little kids here watching the trains run.”

Cameron Thickens, in the bunny ears, watches intently as a model train comes along the bend along with Jack Herrell. (Jesse Wright)

One of those eager spectators was Henry Norvilas, 4, who’s been an annual attendee for the last three years.

Maybe one day he’ll buy a set—or get one some Christmas—but Golden said kids and their parents shouldn’t have to feel any pressure to invest in anything on the spot.

“We don’t want that 4-year-old to fall in love with a high-priced item, and we raise enough money to keep our chapter running well,” he said. Indeed, Golden said this was the chapter’s biggest annual fundraiser and it allows the organization to donate money to various community projects, like a local Boy Scout chapter that needed a new trailer for camping outings.

But for every 4-year-old, there were serious collectors, too, often found on the other side of the tracks, talking up their models laid out proudly for a day on display.

Bob Kosic, a member of the Mod-U-Trak group, said he and four others set up their rig the night prior, after hauling it in on a 16-foot Penske truck. The Mod-U-Trak group is a Chicagoland-based club that specializes in standardized displays set within a specific geography, meaning tracks can be easily interchanged with each other. This also allows for a display to be easily disassembled, transported and set up so the group goes to a lot of train shows. Kosic said it only takes about five people to put the whole thing together.

Bob Kosic, with a Mod-U-Trak setup featuring a Santa Fe train line setup, explains his models to visitors to the train show on Saturday at the LTHS gym. (Jesse Wright)

Kosic’s track also featured recreations of various suburban communities set sometime in the 1950s, including Lombard, Romeoville, and Willow Springs.

Kosic, like Golden, got into train modeling from his father, who brought home a model kit when he, Kosic, was a small child. They both got hooked.

“We fell into the rabbit hole,” he laughed.

It’s a common story at the show among model enthusiasts, but there are still a few who found their way first into a love affair with the real deal.

Ralph Eisenbrandt began working as a teenager for the Rock Island, so young he couldn’t work the yards by law, so he started as a mail clerk and then a file clerk until he was 18, when he was old enough to work the yards.

“I got interested in railroads in high school,” he said. “It was natural; all the other kids in my school got into railroads.”

Eventually, he moved into another career and quit the Rock Island and while these days he doesn’t take any more Amtrak trips due to health issues, he never lost interest in the trains. As the crowds piled into the LTHS gym, he’s still fascinated by the machines and the models, though he does lament an industry that won’t afford curious boys much of a chance to work the yards.

Time stands as still as the automobile traffic on the train model sets, on display Saturday at the LTHS gym. (Jesse Wright)

“Unfortunately there’s not that many jobs out there like there used to be,” he said, before adding he’s still hopeful of a turnaround. Every year there’s talk and maybe even a little action.

“Around the country, there’s a resurgence in commuter lines,” he said. “And virtually every other counter in the world has a high-speed rail line.”

But in the meantime, there’s the All-American Railroad Show. It’s still going strong and it’ll be back again next year, right on time, in La Grange.
