The Final 'Star Trek: Discovery' Voyage Will Commence in 2024 — Why Was it Canceled?

Back in 2017, the famed Star Trek universe (which began in 1966) expanded with the arrival of Alex Kurtzman and Bryan Fuller's prequel series Star Trek: Discovery . Set about 10 years before Captain Kirk's five-year mission and about 100 years before the events of Star Trek: Enterprise , the Paramount Plus series "follows the voyages of Starfleet on their missions to discover new worlds and new lifeforms, and one Starfleet officer who must learn that to truly understand all things alien, you must first understand yourself," as detailed by the official Star Trek website .

Starring Sonequa Martin-Green ( The Walking Dead ), Mary Wiseman ( Longmire ), Doug Jones ( The Shape of Water ), and Anthony Rapp ( Rent ), among others, Star Trek: Discovery 's intergalactic adventures will cease after Season 5, which will hit the streamer in early 2024, per Deadline .

So why was Star Trek: Discovery canceled?

Why was 'Star Trek: Discovery' canceled?

“Star Trek: Discovery is a perennial favorite on the service, near and dear to the hearts of legions of Star Trek fans as well as all of us here at Paramount Plus,” Tanya Giles, chief programming officer at Paramount Streaming, said in a statement.

“The series and its incredible cast and creatives ushered in a new era for Star Trek when it debuted over six years ago, embracing the future of streaming with serialized storytelling, bringing to life deep and complex characters that honor Gene Roddenberry’s legacy of representing diversity and inclusion, and pushing the envelope with award-winning world-building,” she continued. “This final season will see our beloved crew take on a new adventure, and we can’t wait to celebrate the series’ impact on the franchise leading up to its final season early next year.”

With the series earning an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 85 percent (though it boasts an audience score of 36 percent), it's difficult to see why Star Trek: Discovery is getting the ax. In fact, according to Parrot Analytics , "the audience demand for Star Trek: Discovery is 19.3 times the demand of the average TV series in the United States in the last 30 days."

It has been the privilege of a lifetime to join the #StarTrek universe. Thank you to all of you who’ve welcomed us into your hearts. Known for being one of the flagship series to aid in launching CBS All Access (which is now Paramount Plus), Star Trek: Discovery has been praised for featuring a Black female lead and LGBTQ+ representation (via Dr. Hugh Culber and Lieutenant Paul Stamets).

Though little information about the reasoning behind Star Trek: Discovery 's end has been revealed, Trekkies will be pleased to know that the Star Trek universe is far from complete. Future voyages await viewers.

Per Entertainment Weekly , Alex Kurtzman revealed at 2022's San Diego Comic-Con that the team is "currently developing two more Star Trek shows." Furthermore, fans "can certainly expect to see more Star Trek shows with female leads."

The first four seasons of Star Trek: Discovery are currently streaming on Paramount Plus.

Star Trek: Discovery is coming to end.

The Paramount+ sci-fi drama will embark on its final voyage with its upcoming fifth season.

Sources say principal filming of the season is mostly complete. But with this move to end the show, there will be additional filming to help craft a conclusion for the series. The fifth and final season will premiere in early 2024.

“When we first started talking about the return of Star Trek eight years ago, we never could have imagined the indelible impact Star Trek: Discovery would have,” said David Stapf, president of CBS Studios. “The series brought back a beloved global franchise, and just like its predecessors Discovery honored Star Trek’s legacy of ‘infinite diversity in infinite combinations,’ representing the best of what we could be as humans when we celebrate our differences.”

The move comes on the heels of Paramount+ announcing that another member of its Trek team, Star Trek: Picard , will wrap with its current third season.

Martin-Green wrote: “I can hardly believe that this mind-blowing journey with Discovery is ending. I’m astoundingly blessed by God to have played Captain Michael Burnham and to have taken part in a legacy alongside an extraordinary cast, phenomenal crew and remarkable writing team. To our most supportive partners at CBS Studios and Paramount+, who insisted on making television history, I’m deeply grateful. I’m also deeply grateful for the creative collaboration with our showrunners Michelle Paradise and Alex Kurtzman, as well as Olatunde Osunsanmi and the incomparable team of executive producers. I will never forget how it felt to stand together as a show family, cradling the heirloom of Trek with all those from the franchise at large and with the fans. The fans welcomed us into their hearts as we launched a new iteration of Trek and an entire entertainment platform, and we’ll never forget it…65 episodes later, here’s to the entire company of Star Trek: Discovery , to the show and its fifth and final season, to its beloved fans and to all those who envision a better future. Let’s fly….”

The decision follows Paramount Global CFO Naveen Chopra telling an investor conference on Feb. 28 that the company might spend less on streaming content in 2024 than previously forecast due to the integration of  Paramount+  and Showtime.

The departure of Discovery secures its spinoff Star Trek: Strange New Worlds the undisputed new captain of Paramount+’s Star Trek series fleet. Strange New Worlds embraced the more planet-of-the-week style of The Original Series and launched last May to a 99 percent positive score on Rotten Tomatoes. Paramount+ said Strange New Worlds was the most-watched new Trek  series on the services over its first 90 days and the company touted the series in a Super Bowl ad last month. The show returns for Season 2 sometime this year.

Kurtzman has also teased the development of another potential spinoff, Star Trek: Academy , which would focus on a new generation of young cadets. Nothing has been officially announced yet on that front, however. Kurtzman is one of Paramount Global’s most important producers and has delivered hits outside of the Trek franchise for Paramount+ through his deal with CBS Studios. He inked his second nine-figure overall deal with the David Stapf-led CBS Studios in 2021.

Star Trek: Discovery, which launched in 2017 , is a legacy show for Paramount+. It helped announce then-upstart streamer CBS All Access as its first commissioned original series . It also launched the Star Trek franchise on the streamer, which has grown to five current series. With Picard currently airing its final season , Star Trek: Discovery will be the final CBS all Access series to end its run on Paramount+.

CBS made waves in 2017 when Discovery , part of a storied franchise and one of its most valuable IPs, was sent to the company’s then in-the-works streaming service instead of the flagship broadcast network. Star Trek: Discovery did get a broadcast premiere on CBS before becoming a CBS All Access exclusive. Discovery then made a return to CBS in the fall of 2020, when Season 1 was used as contingency programming because of the pandemic’s impact on production.

“The series and its incredible cast and creatives ushered in a new era for Star Trek when it debuted over six years ago, embracing the future of streaming with serialized storytelling, bringing to life deep and complex characters that honor Gene Roddenberry’s legacy of representing diversity and inclusion, and pushing the envelope with award-winning world-building,” Giles added. “This final season will see our beloved crew take on a new adventure, and we can’t wait to celebrate the series’ impact on the franchise leading up to its final season early next year.”

Principal photography has just wrapped, but there will be come additional filming on the season, a source tells Deadline.

“As lifelong fans of Star Trek , it has been an immense honor and privilege to help bring Star Trek: Discovery to the world,” said executive producers and co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise . “The ‘Trek’ universe means so much to so many – including us – and we couldn’t be prouder of everything Discovery has contributed to its legacy, particularly with representation. If just one person sees themselves, or the possibilities for their future, in a new way because of Discovery, then we think we’d have made Gene Roddenberry very proud.”

Along with Martin-Green, the Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 cast includes Doug Jones (Saru), Anthony Rapp (Paul Stamets), Mary Wiseman (Sylvia Tilly), Wilson Cruz (Dr. Hugh Culber), David Ajala (Cleveland “Book” Booker), Blu del Barrio (Adira) and Callum Keith Rennie (Rayner).

“Of course, there would be no Discovery without Sonequa Martin-Green and the extraordinary team of artists, both in front of and behind the camera, who have brought this show to life. Their passion and determination to make every episode special has been deeply inspiring; so too has their love and support for one another and their genuine love for Star Trek ,” Kurtzman and Paradise continued.

Martin-Green made Star Trek history as the first Black woman to Captain a ship, with the show setting other major firsts in LGBTQIA+ representation on both Star Trek and in television in general.

“I’m astoundingly blessed by God to have played Captain Michael Burnham and to have taken part in a legacy alongside an extraordinary cast, phenomenal crew and remarkable writing team,” said star and producer Martin-Green. “I will never forget how it felt to stand together as a show family, cradling the heirloom of ‘Trek’ with all those from the franchise at large and with the fans… 65 episodes later, here’s to the entire company of Star Trek: Discovery, to the show and its fifth and final season, to its beloved fans and to all those who envision a better future. Let’s fly… ”

As Discovery and Picard are coming to an end, there has been speculation about new series in the franchise as part of Kurtzman’s deal with CBS Studios. As we previously reported, a new offshoot,  Star Trek:  Starfleet Academy ,  is in development at CBS Studios and  Alex Kurtzman ’s studio-based Secret Hideout for the streamer. Also in the works is Section 31,  a Discovery spinoff that features the Emperor Philipa Georgiou character played by Michelle Yeoh. Current Star Trek series, in addition to Discovery and Picard , include Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy.

“When we first started talking about the return of Star Trek eight years ago, we never could have imagined the indelible impact Star Trek: Discovery would have,” said David Stapf, president of CBS Studios. “The series brought back a beloved global franchise, and just like its predecessors, Discovery honored Star Trek ’s legacy of ‘infinite diversity in infinite combinations,’ representing the best of what we could be as humans when we celebrate our differences.”

“To the fans around the world, thank you for joining us on this incredible journey,” Kurtzman and Paradise added. “We can’t wait for you to see what we’ve been working on for this final season; we appreciate your patience in the meantime and trust us when we say it’ll be worth the wait. We love you all! LLAP.”

Star Trek: Discovery’s upcoming fifth season will be its final voyage

A Black woman with long braids wearing a red uniform and clasping her hands together in front of her chest.

Star Trek: Discovery both carved out a foothold for the franchise in the streaming space and gave people a compelling reason to sign up for Paramount Plus back when it was still CBS All Access. But with its upcoming fifth season, the series will be coming to an end.

This evening, CBS Studios announced that Star Trek: Discovery ’s fifth season, due out sometime in “early 2024,” will be its final one and that the show’s cast and crew are gearing up for a year of “celebrations and appearances at key events in markets around the world” in the build-up to the season’s premiere. In a statement about bittersweet news, executive producers and co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise expressed their gratitude to Discovery’ s fans and said that it’s been “an immense honor and privilege to help bring Star Trek: Discovery to the world.”

“The Trek universe means so much to so many — including us — and we couldn’t be prouder of everything Discovery has contributed to its legacy, particularly with representation,” Kurtzman and Paradise said. “If just one person sees themselves, or the possibilities for their future, in a new way because of Discovery , then we think we’d have made Gene Roddenberry very proud.”

While CBS has not announced the exact date when Star Trek: Discovery returns next year, it described the show’s final chapter as following Captain Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and her crew “on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries.”

Another Star Trek Series Is Coming To An End At Paramount+

Similarly to Picard, another Star Trek project at Paramount Plus has been confirmed to be saying its goodbyes in the next season.

Star Trek: Discovery 's next season has been confirmed to be the last. It has also been confirmed that the season in question has been pushed forward by Paramount Plus.

Initially set a whole decade behind the events of the original series, Star Trek : Discovery follows the adventures and failings of Commander Michael Burnham, who inadvertently launches the Federation into a war with the Klingons and is stripped of rank and reassigned to the eponymous ship, the USS Discovery. Throughout four seasons, fans watch Burnham atone and move on, doing her duty, helping to end the war she started, and eventually rising to command once more

Now, Star Trek: Discovery season 5 has been confirmed by execs to be the last adventure for the crew of the USS Discovery, in a similar vein to Picard season 3, which promises to be the final curtain call for the crew of Star Trek: The Next Generation . “I can hardly believe that this mind-blowing journey with ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ is ending,” Sonequa Martin-Green, who starred and produced the show, said. “I’m astoundingly blessed by God to have played Captain Michael Burnham and to have taken part in a legacy alongside an extraordinary cast, phenomenal crew, and remarkable writing team.”

Star Trek Discovery Netflix Paramount Plus

In addition to the merit of its plot and design, Star Trek: Discovery has been on the leading edge of more progressive moves for the franchise, giving the franchise its first black female protagonist and Star Trek 's first non-binary and transgender additions to a main cast. Furthermore, the show has managed to avoid the pitfall of overt reliance on these characteristics to build fan interest in the characters or stakes in their stories, leading to near-seamless acceptance of the choices. David Stapf, President of CBS Studios, commented that the show “honored ‘Star Trek’s’ legacy of ‘infinite diversity in infinite combinations,’ representing the best of what we could be as humans when we celebrate our differences.”

While Star Trek: Discovery is certainly well-loved and will be missed, the impact it had on the franchise as a whole won’t fully vanish with its curtain call. Throughout the show’s run, Star Trek: Discovery implemented many retcons that will continue to affect other shows and films going forward. Whether or not the show’s final season will leave even more for other showrunners and fans to wrap their heads around or tie everything up nicely remains to be seen.

“ Star Trek: Discovery ” will end with the upcoming Season 5 at Paramount+ , Variety has learned. In addition, the fifth and final season will now debut in early 2024 as opposed to this year as originally thought.

Filming is mostly complete on Season 5, but according to an individual with knowledge of the situation, there will be some additional filming that has yet to take place. In addition, Paramount is planning to send the show off in style, with events planned in certain key markets throughout the year leading up to the final season’s release. Further details will be released at a later date.

“As lifelong fans of ‘Star Trek,’ it has been an immense honor and privilege to help bring ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ to the world,” added executive producers and co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise. “The ‘Trek’ universe means so much to so many – including us – and we couldn’t be prouder of everything ‘Discovery’ has contributed to its legacy, particularly with representation. “Discovery” has been the flagship modern “Star Trek” series since it launched in 2017, at a time when Paramount+ was still known as CBS All Access. The series kicked off the rebooted “Star Trek” TV universe and led to the successful spinoff “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” which is currently prepping its second season. The show also chalked up a number of firsts for the franchise, including having a Black female protagonist in Michael Burnham. It also prominently featured LGBTQIA+ characters in a way not previously seen in a “Star Trek” show.

“When we first started talking about the return of ‘Star Trek’ eight years ago, we never could have imagined the indelible impact ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ would have,” said David Stapf, president of CBS Studios. “The series brought back a beloved global franchise, and just like its predecessors, ‘Discovery’ honored ‘Star Trek’s’ legacy of ‘infinite diversity in infinite combinations,’ representing the best of what we could be as humans when we celebrate our differences. I’d like to thank Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise, who have led this show with heart, passion, and as fans themselves with vivid storytelling – always ready to push boundaries like those before them. And finally, I’d like to thank this talented cast, led by the brilliant Sonequa Martin-Green, whose leadership both onscreen and off has helped guide the way from day one.”

Bryan Fuller and Kurtzman are the credited creators of “Discovery.” Kurtzman and Paradise serve as executive producers and co-showrunners, with Heather Kadin, Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Frank Siracusa, John Weber, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth also executive producing. CBS Studios produces in association with Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment. Secret Hideout is currently under an overall deal at CBS Studios.

“’Star Trek: Discovery’ is a perennial favorite on the service, near and dear to the hearts of legions of ‘Star Trek’ fans as well as all of us here at Paramount+,” said Tanya Giles, chief programming officer at Paramount Streaming. “The series and its incredible cast and creatives ushered in a new era for ‘Star Trek’ when it debuted over six years ago, embracing the future of streaming with serialized storytelling, bringing to life deep and complex characters that honor Gene Roddenberry’s legacy of representing diversity and inclusion, and pushing the envelope with award-winning world-building. This final season will see our beloved crew take on a new adventure and we can’t wait to celebrate the series’ impact on the franchise leading up to its final season early next year.”

Along with “Discovery” and “Strange New Worlds,” Paramount+ is currently airing the third and final season of “Star Trek: Picard,” which features a reunion of the “Next Generation” cast alongside series lead Patrick Stewart. There have been rumors that spinoffs built around characters in “Picard” could also be in the works.

Paramount+ also has the adult animated series “Star Trek: Lower Decks,” which is prepping its fourth season, as well as the Nickelodeon series “Star Trek: Prodigy,” which is prepping its second season. Paramount has also been developing a Starfleet Academy series for some time, along with a series about the mysterious Section 31 starring Michelle Yeoh as Philippa Georgiou, a character she originated on “Discovery.”

Star Trek: Discovery Will End After Season 5

The show that brought star trek back to tv will wrap up with a fifth and final season in early 2024..

Image for article titled Star Trek: Discovery Will End After Season 5

Paramount has confirmed that Star Trek: Discovery —the first series in the franchise since Star Trek: Enterprise ended in 2005, and the herald of Star Trek ’s revitalization as a streaming show universe —will come to an end after its fifth and final season .

“There is much adventure yet to come in season five–but today we share the bittersweet news that after 65 incredible episodes with Captain Burnham and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery , the upcoming season premiering in early 2024 will be our last,” a letter from showrunners Michelle Paradise and Alex Kurtzman reads in part. “No series continues forever, of course, so this day was always going to come. We are forever grateful to have been able to share such an amazing journey with you.”

“I can hardly believe that this mind-blowing journey with Star Trek: Discovery is ending,” Sonequa Martin-Green , who plays Michael Burnham in the series, added in her own statement.“I’m astoundingly blessed by God to have played Captain Michael Burnham and to have taken part in a legacy alongside an extraordinary cast, phenomenal crew and remarkable writing team. To our most supportive partners at CBS Studios and Paramount+, who insisted on making television history, I’m deeply grateful. I’m also deeply grateful for the creative collaboration with our showrunners Michelle Paradise and Alex Kurtzman, as well as Olatunde Osunsanmi and the incomparable team of executive producers.”

“I will never forget how it felt to stand together as a show family, cradling the heirloom of Trek with all those from the franchise at large and with the fans,” the actress continued. “The fans welcomed us into their hearts as we launched a new iteration of Trek and an entire entertainment platform, and we’ll never forget it. 65 episodes later, here’s to the entire company of Star Trek: Discovery , to the show and its fifth and final season, to its beloved fans and to all those who envision a better future. Star Trek: Discovery Is Ending With Season 5 On Paramount+, But There Is Good News

Michael Burnham's story is coming to a close.

Star Trek: Discovery , the series that ushered in a new era of television for the revered sci-fi franchise, is coming to a close. Reports say that the Sonequa Martin-Green-led series will end with its upcoming Season 5, set to air in early 2024. The reveal will undoubtedly come as a shock to fans of the series, but there is good news for them to take solace in as early reports suggest it will get a proper ending.

News of Star Trek: Discovery 's ending was confirmed by Paramount+ . In a joint statement, Star Trek executive producer Alex Kurtzman and showrunner Michelle Paradise offered thanks to fans who supported the show for all these years:

To the fans around the world, thank you for joining us on this incredible journey. Your love for these characters and your excitement for every episode, every season, has meant the world to us. We can’t wait for you to see what we’ve been working on for this final season; we appreciate your patience in the meantime and trust us when we say it’ll be worth the wait. We love you all! LLAP

News of  Star Trek: Discovery 's ending came initially via  THR , which also reported that principal filming on the season is almost complete, but that there will be additional filming in order to help create a conclusion for the series. This is likely why the release date is being pushed to 2024 when it seemed not long ago the series would arrive sometime in the midpoint of 2023.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 looks like it's a departure from what we've seen in the series so far, as trailers for the season appear more action-packed than previous entries. Even so, actor Doug Jones confirmed to CinemaBlend some time ago that the heart of what made Discovery so great was still there . Take a look at the trailer below:

Star Trek: Discovery is often praised for its diverse cast and is largely responsible for the launch of the much-acclaimed spinoff Strange New Worlds . The series also forged new territory beginning in Season 3 when it jumped to the 32nd century, further expanding the bounds for storytelling in the universe.

Star Trek: Discovery 's ending may leave some wondering what this means for other upcoming Trek shows . Streaming services across the board are cutting down on original content and trimming libraries in an effort to save money. Strange New Worlds , Lower Decks , and Prodigy are all expected to air new seasons in 2023, as was Discovery . It's possible that more announcements about cancellations could come as the year continues.

It also may leave some wondering about the fates of proposed Star Trek shows that have been in development for some time. As of writing, the franchise is working on a Section 31 series that Michelle Yeoh was attached to as well as a Starfleet Academy series . It also seems like the cast of Star Trek: Picard and showrunner Terry Matalas are campaigning for a follow-up to the series , though no official talks about that have evidently happened. These are questions that could be answered if we knew why Discovery was cancelled.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 is coming in 2024, but only for those with a Paramount+ subscription . Subscribe now to catch up on the final season of Picard and wonder alongside many just what the future of Trek on the platform could look like a year from now.

Star trek: discovery cancelled or season 3 here's the future of the series.

Star Trek: Discovery brought the beloved sci-fi franchise back to TV but is it returning for season 3 or has it been cancelled?

The show has brought the beloved sci-fi franchise back to TV but is Star Trek: Discovery cancelled or will it return for a third season? The Star Trek franchise was in somewhat weak shape in the mid-2000s. Star Trek: Nemesis , which was the big screen swansong of the Star Trek: The Next Generation crew, proved to be a critical and financial failure. Prequel series Star Trek: Enterprise also came to an end in 2005 after four seasons. J.J. Abrams rebooted the movie franchise with 2009's Star Trek , casting Chris Pine as a young Captain Kirk.

Due to some time-travel shenanigans, the new movie took the original crew and split them off on a new timeline, but while the reboot was criticized for plot issues and an overabundance of lens flares, it proved to be a solid hit. Sequel Star Trek Into Darkness  wan an even bigger success but also received backlash for a number of story issues, including hiding that Benedict Cumberbatch was playing iconic villain Khan. The third entry Star Trek Beyond received the strongest reviews of the Kelvin Timeline trilogy but was also the lowest-grossing.

While the big screen future of the series is in question, with Quentin Tarantino currently primed to direct a Star Trek movie following the completion of Once Upon A Time In Hollywood , the franchise is thriving on the small screen. CBS' Star Trek: Discovery brought the series back to TV in a major way, and over the course of two seasons has taken fans on exciting new adventures. Following the end of the second season, will the crew return for Star Trek: Discovery season 3 or is it cancelled?

CBS Renewed Star Trek: Discovery For Season 3

is star trek discovery cancelled

While there were rumors Star Trek: Discovery could be cancelled following the end of season 2, they proved to be unfounded when CBS renewed the show for season 3 in February 2019. While the series had trouble finding its own identity in season 1, Discovery season 2 proved to be a more assured and entertaining series. While fans have had certain issues with the show, it can't be denied Star Trek: Discovery has brought the franchise to a whole new audience.

The Future For Star Trek On TV Looks Bright

Captain Picard Star Trek

Not only will Star Trek: Discovery return for season 3 but a whole host of new shows are planned. The most exciting is Star Trek: Picard , featuring the return of Patrick Stewart's Jean-Luc Picard. Other planned spinoffs include Star Trek: Section 31 , focusing on Starfleet's shady black ops outfit, which will feature the return of Michelle Yeoh's Georgiou.

There will also be a Nickelodeon Star Trek kids show and another animated show dubbed Star Trek: Lower Decks . Fans are also calling for a spinoff featuring Arson Mount as Captain Pike, who made a big impression during Discovery season 2. While there was once a dearth of the franchise on TV, Star Trek: Discovery season 3 and all the planned spinoffs prove the show has a bright future.

What’s this tv show about.

Streaming on the Paramount+ subscription service, the Star Trek: Discovery  TV show stars Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Mary Wiseman, Wilson Cruz, David Ajala, and Blu del Barrio. A prequel to the original Star Trek series, this drama follows the crew of the USS Discovery of the interstellar government known as the United Federation of Planets (UFP). Season four finds Captain Burnham (Martin-Green) and her crew facing a threat unlike any they’ve ever encountered. With Federation and non-Federation worlds alike feeling the impact, they must confront the unknown and work together to ensure a hopeful future for all .

Telly’s Take

Unless they decide to publicize viewership, it is difficult to predict whether Paramount+ will cancel or renew Star Trek: Discovery for season five. That being said, the Trek franchise is the cornerstone of this streaming service’s original content so I would be surprised if Discovery didn’t reach at least five seasons. I’ll keep my ears open and an eye out for news, and will update this page with breaking developments. Subscribe for free alerts on Star Trek: Discovery cancellation or renewal news.

Discovery is by far the best and most interesting Star Trek ever!

STD is so intensely horrible that I cut on an episode only to find myself realizing the episode has ended and I haven’t even watched it, all while staring at the TV the entire time. I have absolutely NO IDEA what has taken place because it is so dreadfully boring it simply cannot hold my attention throughout an entire episode. This is SHAMEFUL for a Star Trek series! I can watch and rewatch all of the Star Trek series ever made and know everything about all of them including episode names, yet I can’t even sit and watch this bland …  Read more »

If you had watched the series from the beginning, you would know that “Black Alert” refers to an upcoming jump through the Mycelial network that is the basis of the Discovery series, said jumps being highly disruptive. It has nothing to do with ‘race’ which Stra Trek has always dismissed as irrelevant, divisive, and unscientific!

GOD D@#$ they refuse to cancel this trash now matter HOW low it goes in the ratings. This kind of crap is why we can’t have watchable Star Trek any more. Burnham is the face of 1 00 billion dollar franchise turning into a 100 million dollar franchse.

It’s a dumpster fire… Star Trek fan since the 70’s so I have an opinion on how the spinoffs have progressed through the years. STD is literally the only one I have a problem with. By God I wish someone with competence would take the lead and start a new show in respects to what Star Trek is about at it’s very soul. The trash fire of STD has to go.

I am a long time Trek fan. Season 1 and 2 were really enjoyable to watch. They held my attention. There was danger, conflict, excitement. Although the season one finale kinda tied things up just a little bit too neatly and quickly regarding the Klingon/Federation war, but I was willing to forgive that. Season 2 was exciting and a love letter to fans of the original series and even the original pilot of TOS. But Season 3 and Season 4 (so far) have just felt so tiresome and like I’m watching “This is Us”, but aboard a Federation starship. I’m …  Read more »

Is This the End of Star Trek's Golden Age of Streaming?

With several shows either being cancelled or finishing their runs, the trekscape is shifting. but fans shouldn't be worried..

Is This the End of Star Trek's Golden Age of Streaming? - IGN Image

It had to end. In 2022, Star Trek fans were able to watch five new Star Trek series, their releases staggered across the year – Star Trek: Discovery (Season 4, November 2021-March 2022), Star Trek: Picard (Season 2, March-May 2022), Star Trek: Lower Decks (Season 3, August-October 2022), Star Trek: Prodigy (Season 1, Part 1, October 2021-February 2022/Season 1, Part 2, October-December 2022) and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (Season 1, May-July 2022). Deep down, we all knew it could not last. And that has now been confirmed with the ending or cancellation of three of those five shows.

The most recent blow to fans came with the announcement that Prodigy’s second season would not stream on Paramount Plus. That followed the news from March that Discovery will end its run with the upcoming Season 5. Picard, meanwhile, came to the end of its planned three-season story this past April.

But all is not lost. Although some of the signs are worrying, there is hope for the Star Trek franchise yet.

Star Trek: Prodigy has been removed from Paramount Plus and its second season is now in limbo.

Star Trek: A Balancing Act

Long-running, complicated franchises always have to tackle the issue of how to attract new viewers. Long-time viewers may drift away or even shuffle off this mortal coil entirely (bear in mind, Star Trek has been running for 57 years at this point) and in order to keep growing, the franchise needs new people to start watching it. That means it needs a careful balance in its programming. Picard – and especially Season 3 of that show – is brilliant and deservedly beloved by long-time fans. But it is unlikely to attract too many new fans unless their partners or parents force them to watch it.

Even someone who is interested in Star Trek and wants to give it a go might struggle to work out where to jump in. Discovery is built on a succession of season-long arcs that all feed in to the next season, the new Starfleet Academy show, announced in spring 2023, is expected to be a spin-off of Discovery, and Lower Decks is wall-to-wall in-jokes and references. Perhaps part of the reason for the success of Strange New Worlds is that, as a prequel, it is a good place for new viewers to start (there is a tiny bit of Discovery-related backstory, but the show has essentially set that aside). Its episodic format means you do not even have to start with Episode 1 (just like The Original Series).

In the glory days of 2022, the need to balance the interests of different viewers was not too much of a problem because so much Star Trek was being greenlit that there was something for everyone. Do you want something modern, arc-based, and not too intricately connected with decades-worth of old shows? Watch Discovery! Want to get your younger kids interested? Watch Prodigy! Are you a long-time fan wanting a continuation of 1990s Trek? Watch Picard! Do you fancy something a bit lighter that calls back to the series you loved back then? Watch Lower Decks! Do you just want some good old-fashioned Star Trek with some fresh characters mixed in with legacy ones? Watch Strange New Worlds!

But we have reached the inevitable point where the boom of streaming is coming to an end in a spectacular bust of cancelled programming and merging services. The expansion of both streaming services and the programming available on them could not go on forever. Viewers simply do not have enough time to keep up with every new show as it comes out, and in the face of rising costs of living in many parts of the world, they cannot afford to pay for more and more streaming services either. That means that streamers like Paramount have to look at streamlining their content, including Star Trek. And they need to provide a balance of producing shows that reward long-time fans with nostalgia, the continuation of long-term storylines, or both, while also making titles that can bring in new viewers who just want to dip their toe in to the Star Trek world.

A Shrinking Universe

We can see the immediate impact of this change in direction in the smaller number of Star Trek TV series being greenlit. Picard ended on a tantalising note, teasing a new series with Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) as Captain of the Enterprise-G and a cliffhanger featuring Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) in a mid-credits scene. Despite these obvious lead-ins for a new series and online clamour from fans asking Paramount for a proposed spin-off (dubbed Star Trek: Legacy) to be greenlit, so far the show is nothing more than a twinkle in Picard Season 3 showrunner Terry Matalas’ eye.

Another Star Trek series that has been stuck in development for years has now been downgraded – in terms of screentime – to a straight-to-streaming movie. As far back as 2018, Michelle Yeoh was in talks to star in a new series, Star Trek: Section 31, as Emperor Georgiou, one of her characters from Discovery. By January 2019 the series was in development, but then it was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, and remained in a state of limbo until spring 2023. Section 31, starring Yeoh, has finally been greenlit, but as a single feature-length film that will stream on Paramount Plus.

There are several reasons for this, not least the fact that Yeoh is now an Oscar-winner and may have other projects she wants to pursue. Paramount may also be looking at expanding the type of content they produce. Star Trek has so far avoided the limited series or one-off special presentations the Star Wars franchise and MCU have been making (Werewolf by Night, The Book of Boba Fett, etc.). With the exception of the short-lived series Short Treks (2018-2020), Star Trek has so far stuck to traditional TV series (20-30 minutes animated, 45 minutes – one hour live-action) or feature films with a theatrical release. It may be that the change of plan for Section 31 is a combination of practical issues and a desire to expand the format of the Star Trek Universe. But ultimately, the result is that fewer Trek shows are being greenlit.

Much more worrying for Star Trek fans is the cancellation of Prodigy. Along with the absence of any announcement regarding Legacy and the change in plans for Section 31, this takes us down from five currently-running Star Trek shows in 2022 to only three by 2025 (Lower Decks, Strange New Worlds, and Starfleet Academy). That in itself is not so bad. After all, for most of the five decades Star Trek has been on the air, there have only been one or two Star Trek series airing at the same time. But the way Prodigy has been cancelled and the uncertainty surrounding where and how fans can watch Season 1 and whether they will even get to see Season 2 is more worrying.

is star trek discovery cancelled

Prodigy: An Uncertain Future

Prodigy was cancelled during post-production on Season 2. Because it is an animated series, this is quite a lengthy process. Co-executive producer Aaron J. Waltke has been optimistic on Twitter about getting the second season finished and picked up elsewhere, but it is still very disappointing that something so close to completion has been pulled, and considering recent high-profile cases of films and shows that have been completed but never released, like Warner Bros.’ Batgirl film, there is a clear concern that we might never get to see Season 2. And to make things even worse, Season 1 has been pulled from Paramount’s streaming service Paramount Plus entirely. The only legal way to stream Prodigy at the moment is to buy it from Amazon Prime or a similar service.

We love Prodigy ( #SaveStarTrekProdigy ) but looking at this from a cold-hearted business point of view, we can see the argument for cancelling it. Prodigy is a show primarily aimed at children. Following its release on Paramount Plus in October 2021, the first 10 episodes aired on Nickelodeon from December of that year, and the Nickelodeon logo appears in the title sequence and in the show’s publicity. This can be off-putting to some grown-up fans, who seemingly can’t get past the “kids show” branding.

Prodigy is supposed to be a point of entry for new viewers, enticing kids in with an exciting story that introduces them to the world of Star Trek and gets them, hopefully, watching even more Star Trek. But the writing of Prodigy, especially the second half of Season 1, just as often seems aimed at long-time Star Trek viewers. There is an entire episode that riffs on The Original Series (“All the World’s a Stage”), an episode featuring cameos from legacy characters and Star Trek’s most famous cadet test (“Kobayashi”) and a cliffhanger that revolves around two legacy characters and an ongoing plot thread from way back on Star Trek: Voyager.

But that is exactly why some long-term fans are desperate to save the show, or at the very least to see the nearly-finished Season 2. Throughout Voyager, which ran from 1994-2001 and finished airing long before Prodigy’s main target audience was born, there was an ongoing romantic tension between Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) and her First Officer Chakotay (Robert Beltran) that was never resolved. Picard has established that Chakotay is no longer with Seven of Nine, his girlfriend in Voyager’s finale, and Prodigy has clearly been stirring up those long-dormant tensions in the development of its plot, culminating in a season-ending cliffhanger that revolves around the question of whether or not Admiral Janeway and her young crew will be able to rescue Chakotay from a future time period where he has been lost. Kids will be disappointed if there is no more Prodigy; grown-up Voyager fans will be absolutely livid if the possibility of resolving a nearly 30-year-old storyline is dangled in front of them and then taken away again.

The removal of Prodigy from Paramount Plus is even worse news than its cancellation. When CBS Access was re-launched as Paramout Plus in the US in 2021 with expanded content – including from Nickelodeon, which is owned by Paramount – and in some other territories in 2022, it was sold as “the home of all Star Trek.” Without Prodigy, that is simply not true. It comes back to that balance again. Star Trek overseer Alex Kurtzman told Variety back in 2021 that he wanted to make sure viewers did not have to watch every show in order to enjoy any of them, and that is a thoroughly sensible move. But it is also important to satisfy franchise fans who do want to watch every show, and the very least Paramount can do is keep them all on the same streaming service.

Part of the reason for pulling Season 1 as well as cancelling Season 2 seems to be that they want to sell Seasons 1 and 2 of Prodigy as a package to another streamer, which does at least keep Prodigy itself all in one place. But with viewers making carefully considered choices about which streaming services to keep and which to cancel in the face of the ever-rising cost of living, Star Trek fans will feel short-changed at finding they have to pay for at least two streamers if they want to be able to watch all the Star Trek shows. Putting all of Star Trek in one place was a big selling point for Paramount Plus, and fans now feel cheated of that promise.

There is no need to feel too gloomy about the future of the Star Trek franchise as a whole. One, two or three TV shows plus a movie (straight to streaming or otherwise) is a pretty decent amount of Star Trek to be enjoying at one time, and more than has been available for much of the franchise’s history. But which shows? The challenge for Paramount is to balance the needs of long-time viewers against the need to attract new viewers, and to do so without upsetting the long-time fans so much that they turn their backs on the current shows. If something has to be cancelled, viewers want to see the material that has already been filmed, and preferably they want to see it all in one place.

And we want Star Trek: Legacy , Paramount, pleaseandthankyou!

Star Trek: Discovery cast didn't know it was cancelled until after they finished filming season 5

A risky maneuver.

The rumors were true: Star Trek: Discovery 's fifth season wasn't originally meant to be the final one, co-showrunner Michelle Paradise has confirmed.

Much has been written about the sci-fi show and its legacy ever since it was announced that its fifth season would be the last one , but it wasn't until CCXP 2023 that we heard more about it straight from co-showrunner Michelle Paradise and star Sonequa Martin-Green (Michael Burnham).

We'd already heard from Star Trek veteran Jonathan Frakes that maybe season 5 had to be reworked into a final season for Discovery after principal photography had ended, and Paradise confirmed that was the case: "We did not know going into season 5 that it would be our final season. We found out after we were done shooting the season. So thankfully, Paramount+ and CBS Studios gave us the ability to go back and shoot some additional scenes, so really, at that point, it was about wrapping it up in the best way and having it feel wonderful for all of the people who love Star Trek."

It doesn't sound like an ideal scenario, but with all the talent involved, we're hoping for the best.

Martin-Green expressed her excitement and conflicting emotions about ending her Star Trek run alongside an amazing crew, but it appears the showrunners and writers did manage to give her a full arc that was planned from the very beginning. We're of course talking about Burnham eventually becoming the captain of the Discovery. Here's what she had to say about the long-in-the-works arc, highlighting how much of the show was about going on that journey with her: "It feels amazing… We had planned for this to be a journey to the chair, and I couldn’t exactly share that with everybody, ‘cause it was a little bit of a secret then… When Burnham sits down on that chair for the first time, at the end of season 3, you feel it too."

As far as TV shows cancellations go, this one doesn't sound too bad, so maybe Star Trek: Discovery has a solid chance at sticking the landing.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5: Renewed or Cancelled?

Naman Shrestha of Star Trek: Discovery Season 5: Renewed or Cancelled?

Created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman, ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ is a science fiction series that revolves around the adventures of Captain Burnham and the crew of the starship Discovery. Set a decade before ‘Star Trek: The Original Series,’ the seventh series in the franchise revolves around the Starfleet officer and her crew as they come across new worlds and life forms on their journey.

The science-fiction adventure drama originally premiered on September 24, 2017, simultaneously on CBS and CBS All Access (now known as Paramount+). Starting with season 4, the show moved entirely to CBS’ streaming platform Paramount+. Thanks to the legacy of the franchise, ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ opened to lots of love and praise from fans and critics. Over its four seasons, the series has welcomed newer fans on board and gained a much stronger following. So, if you are one such fan looking for details about season 5, allow us to share with you what we have found!

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Release Date

‘Star Trek: Discovery’ season 4 premiered on November 18, 2021, on Paramount+ , with the season finale airing on March 17, 2022. The fourth season comprises 13 episodes in total with a runtime of 37–65 minutes each.

With regard to the fifth installment of the fan-favorite series, here is all the information we have. Being one of the most-watched original series on Paramount+ along with ‘ Star Trek: Picard ,’ it is evident that the streaming platform relies heavily on the success of this show to attract new subscribers. So, it is no wonder that ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ was renewed for the fifth round on January 18, 2022.

In an interview in March 2022, one of the executive producers Olatunde Osunsanmi revealed that the team is currently in the very early phase of preparation as far as season 5 is concerned. Moreover, the upcoming installment is slated to have just ten episodes, making it the shortest season of the series so far. However, an exact release date for the season 5 premiere is yet to be announced.

Much like season 4, the fifth round is likely to be produced under COVID-19 regulations, which may significantly slow down the production process. So, if the cast and crew get back on set in the coming months, they could be working through 2022. Hence, we expect ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ season 5 to release sometime in Q1 2023.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Cast: Who can be in it?

All the main cast members of ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ are expected to reprise their roles in season 5, including Sonequa Martin-Green (Michael Burnham), Anthony Rapp (Paul Stamets), Doug Jones (Saru), Wilson Cruz (Hugh Culber), and David Ajala (Cleveland “Book” Booker). Since Mary Wiseman (Sylvia Tilly) returned in the season 4 finale, she is expected to be back for the new installment as well.

Apart from them, it would be safe to assume that other cast members such as Oded Fehr (Admiral Charles Vance), Ian Alexander (Gray Tal), and Tara Rosling (President T’Rina) will also return. Moreover, there is a possibility that Shawn Doyle will come back in season 5 despite the supposed death of his onscreen character Dr. Tarka. If new characters are introduced, we may get to see some fresh faces as well.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Plot: What can it be About?

Each season of the show tends to focus on a new threat that the Discovery crew has to deal with. The fourth season begins with Captain Michael Burnham and the rest of the Discovery crew lending a helping hand to a damaged space station. Following this, tensions keep rising as the threat over the galaxy looms large with each episode. So, Burnham and her crew have to find a way to get a hold of the situation before it is too late. The season 4 finale ends with Burnham hinting at learning more about the 32nd century and exploring all that it has to offer.

So, in the fifth round, ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ is expected to take a more philosophical approach in the style of the classic shows ‘Star Trek: The Original Series’ and ‘ Star Trek: The Next Generation.’ There is also a possibility of the series having some more action sequences occurring on Earth as the planet returning to the Federation is a significant event in the finale of the fourth season. Moreover, in the March 2022 interview, Osunsanmi teased that the upcoming edition may delve deeper into the past and the events that shaped the present of the Discovery crew.

3 reasons why Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 won't be the end of the series

Disco 's going to be around for a while yet.

is star trek discovery cancelled

It's a good time to be a Star Trek fan. All the classic shows and movies are available to binge at a moment's notice, and there's a boatload of new stuff coming our way. One of the biggest things on our radar at the moment is Discovery Season 3 . We don't yet know when it's coming to CBS All Access, but we're willing to venture an educated guess that it's happening pretty soon. If you've been scouring the internet for new info about the upcoming episodes, you may have come across a worrying rumor claiming Season 3 will mark the end of the series.

We're not convinced Discovery 's ending anytime soon, and you shouldn't be either. Below, we're unpacking three of the biggest reasons why.

The Midnight's Edge YouTube channel, which analyzes news, rumors and industry context for popular sci-fi franchises and other assorted nerdery, claims Discovery Season 3 was substantially reshot, and the season's cliffhanger ending was turned into a suitable series finale, paving the way for cancellation.

is star trek discovery cancelled

3. Discovery 's concept can be infinitely rebooted

The first season of Discovery focused on Burnham's past with Captain Georgiou and explored the Mirror Universe. Season 2 was all about dipping a toe into the Original Series era with Pike, Number One, and Spock. Of course, part of this is because of widely reported showrunner turnover behind the scenes.

While some fans have bristled at this impulse to completely revise the show's premise, it's also key to the show's longevity. With the USS Discovery officially "off the books" according to Spock at the end of Discovery Season 2, the black-ops Federation ship is free to pick and choose which bits of canon it wants to play with. Or, as is presumably the case with Season 3, it's free to leave all that baggage behind and head nearly a thousand years into the future to tell an entirely different kind of Star Trek story.

So even if the worst-case scenario is true, and Season 3 is indeed a "dumpster fire," as Midnight's Edge claims, the showrunners will probably just rejigger the concept again. But by leaving behind the thorny bramble-bush of canon that bogged the show down in previous seasons, we'd expect Discovery can spend well more than one season exploring the distant future.

2. A delay in filming is not a cancellation

There's a couple reasons to suspect we might see a substantial gap between the end of Discovery Season 3 and the premiere of the show's fourth season. So even if the third season did see some reshoots – which are pretty standard for most movies and TV shows – that doesn't mean they changed it because the show has been preemptively cancelled.

The most obvious reason for a delay that series star Sonequa Martin-Green, who plays Michael Burnham, recently revealed that she's expecting her second child. She hasn't shared how far along she is, but it's fair to assume Discovery Season 4 wouldn't begin filming until the tail end of this year, and maybe early 2021. (Unless they plan to have Burnham carrying a lot of potted plants and books, that is.)

View on Instagram

Another important detail: Disco doesn't need to carry the franchise alone anymore, so there's no need to rush. There are more Trek shows in the works, like Lower Decks and a possible Captain Pike spinoff with Anson Mount. Michelle Yeoh's Section 31 spinoff just got underway after Discovery Season 3 wrapped in late February. If new episodes of Disco arrive in spring or summer 2020, there's Section 31, Picard Season 2, and perhaps a yet-unannounced show to fill the gap for a good long while

1. Discovery is the flagship for CBS's long-term Trek strategy

Alex Kurtzman, currently executive producer of Discovery and Picard, signed a five-year deal to oversee the entire Star Trek franchise in 2018. He's played a major role in creating the future vision of Trek since 2009, working on J.J. Abrams' movie reboots as well as the CBS shows.

That seems to be a pretty strong indicator that the powers that be at the studio are happy with the job Kurtzman's doing with Star Trek. They're so happy with it that they want him to keep doing it until at least 2022.

As alluded to above, there's a lot of potential in the latest change-up to Discovery, which leads us to believe that Kurtzman's thinking long-term for the show, rather than mulling over how to cut his losses and wrap it up.

"The only restraints are making sure that we don't violate some Trek fundamentals. But because we're not having to sync up with canon, we really had a different kind of freedom this year," Kurtzman told Space.com in early February.

Star Trek: Discovery is ending and it’s long past due

Paramount+ is ending Star Trek: Discovery after season 5.

Star Trek: Discovery never found its footing in the wider Star Trek universe, despite launching as CBS All-Accesses big new show. It was supposed to carry the fledgling streaming service at a time when everyone was all in on streaming. Companies were investing hundreds of millions, if not billions of dollars into these services, expecting huge returns. For the most part, however, that hasn’t happened.

Discovery was given every chance to succeed in the early streaming years. Debuting in 2017, the show was marketed as hard as anything at the time, but it never achieved the same universal acclaim as Strange New Worlds did.

It was a niche show that catered to niche fans. It was constantly involved in on-set and behind-the-scenes drama, with rotating showrunners, lawsuits, and just poor writing with even worse characters. Discovery was finally canceled by Paramount+ and in turn, delayed the final season until 2024.

Discovery’s reason for the cancellation has not been revealed as of yet, but after a moderate season three reboot, the show would once again lose its traction in season four and remains largely one of the most unliked shows in Star Trek history.

Why Was Star Trek: Discovery canceled?

Streaming is no different than television in the sense that if a show is making them money, no matter how bad it is, they’ll keep it around. Even if the show’s returns are shrinking, but can still be deemed profitable, they’ll keep it around.

Considering Paramount+ is struggling to make waves and has been since the original service first launched in 2017, the price of Discovery has just become too high. There are rumors that the show was carrying an $8.5 to potential $10 million per episode. With the decline in revenue for streaming and the lack of subscribers, Paramount+ clearly saw that the show wasn’t making them money anymore, same as Picard, and opted to cancel the series.

Now, Star Trek has had two canceled shows, and it isn’t looking good for those shows “in production”.

The confusing timeline that Star Trek: Discovery caused

S tar Trek: Discovery will be starting its fifth and final season in a matter of weeks, and in doing so will close one of the more confusing times in Star Trek history. The show was and remains incredibly divisive and will close with one of the more confusing runs in franchise history. It's a show that has confused the heck out of fans for a variety, least of all the time that it exists in.

While Discovery was the seventh show ever produced, it's actually the second show and the last show in the franchise's timeline. It's a bit confusing so let's start from the beginning. The series served as a proto-prequel for The Original Series. The Original Series is the first show that Star Trek ever produced, starting in 1966, and ending in 1969. That show, however, was not the first show in the franchise's timeline, that would be Star Trek: Enterprise.

Enterprise starts its run in 2151 and ends in 2155. Its ending concludes right before the Romulan War. The series finale, however, happens in parts in 2161, a year after the war concludes. Discovery is set nearly a hundred years later in 2256, starting off during the Federation and Klingon War. This puts the series about a decade before the start of the original series, set in 2266.

Strange New Worlds finds itself in between at 2259, three years after Discovery's first season would take place. This all seems pretty simple, but then it gets complicated.

At the end of season two, Discovery goes missing and ends up in 3188 to start season three. This means that Discovery is both the second-earliest show in the franchise's history and the latest in the franchise's history. The time-jump was seen as a soft-reboot and brought some fans back to the show, and so it remained the staple of the series ever since.

‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Coming To SkyShowtime In Europe – All 5 Seasons

is star trek discovery cancelled

| February 29, 2024 | By: TrekMovie.com Staff 27 comments so far

If you live in a country in Europe that doesn’t have Paramount+ you have not been able to stream Star Trek: Discovery , but that all changes in March.

Disco on SkyShowtime

In Europe, Paramount Global has divided things up for streaming with the biggest markets (UK/Ireland, Germany/Austria/Switzerland, France, and Italy) getting a localized version of Paramount+ and the rest of the continent getting SkyShowtime, a joint venture with Comcast. When SkyShowtime launched last February it didn’t include all of the original Paramount+ Star Trek shows. But now S tar Trek: Discovery is finally arriving on the streaming service.

Seasons 1 – 3  of Discovery will be available to stream from March 8 and season 4 arrives on March 22. This is great news for fans in European countries without Paramount+ who lost access to the series when it was removed from Netflix at the end of 2021, shortly before the launch of season 4. Pluto did stream season 4 live in some markets but for most fans in SkyShowtime countries, this will be the first time getting access to the fourth season.

SkyShowtime will then debut the fifth and final season of  Discovery  on April 5, one day after the Paramount+ debut.

Here is SkyShowtime’s version of the new trailer…

Star Trek on SkyShowtime

SkyShowtime also includes the new Paramount original shows Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Prodigy . In addition, the service has every season of the classic Star Trek shows (TOS, The Next Generation , Deep Space Nine , Voyager , and Enterprise ). Currently, SkyShowtime also has all three Kelvin Universe Star Trek movies as well as Star Trek: Nemesis . Amazon Prime Video streams Star Trek: Lower Decks and  Picard in the SkyShowtime markets.

In an interview with THR earlier this month, SkyShowtime CEO Monty Sarhan talked up their Star Trek offerings, saying “And we superserve fans. If you look at Star Trek, we have so much of this amazing franchise from Paramount. We have Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Voyager , Deep Space Nine , Star Trek: The Next Generation , Star Trek The Original Series , we have Enterprise – all of that, and we have almost all the movies. So if you’re a Star Trek fan, SkyShowtime is the place for you.”

Here is a SkyShowtime video from 2023 featuring Star Trek: Strange New Worlds  stars Rebecca Romijn and Anson Mount answering fan questions…

As a joint venture with Paramount Global and Comcast SkyShowtime offers a selection of content from Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Nickelodeon, DreamWorks Animation, Paramount+, Showtime, Sky Studios, and Peacock along with original programming. It could be seen as a model for a potential joint venture that could bundle Paramount+ and Peacock together, which has reportedly been in discussion by Paramount and Comcast .

Here is a look at what’s coming in 2024 on SkyShowtime

SkyShowtime is available in Albania, Andorra, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Norway, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden. It is available through select television providers in some markets and across Apple iOS, tvOS, Android devices, Android TV, Google Chromecast, LG TV, Samsung Smart TVs, and the web.

SkyShowtime is also introducing a new lower-cost ad-support tier in all of their markets starting April 23 with monthly subscription pricing starting at €3.99 to €5.99 (depending on the market).

‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Actor Kenneth Mitchell Has Passed Away

Courageously spending millions of dollars to withhold content to spite Netflix, only to then not be able to show it to millions of viewers for another two and a half years, by which time the show is cancelled. Brilliant strategy.

Netflix was also providing funding for the show right (or at least, they were paying to be able to have the worldwide rights)? Paramount essentially paid money to be given less money, and then narrowed their audience in the process?

I seem to recall reading that Netflix paid so much to air the show internationally that it essentially funded the series.

that’s 100 percent true… they were paying over 100 million… then paramount gave it back and cancelled the deal before season 4 started pulling the rug out from under overseas fans. paramount even bragged about owning disco fully. then paramount paid for season 5 all by themselves… cut the order to 10 to save money and cancelled it before it even aired and delayed it another year. still doesn’t make sense. the show was paid in full by netflix until they ended the deal.

I guess on one hand you have to applaud them for thinking long term and truly wanting Star Trek to feel exclusive to one site. And also to ultimately have fans just pay for one site to watch all the new shows on instead of the multitude of places now.

But yeah it was also short sighted and they way overestimated people’s willingness to subscribe to yet another streaming site just to watch one show. And I’m guessing the overwhelming majority of Trek fans abroad would rather have Netflix since they still have all the classic shows which is 700 hours of Star Trek they can watch and Discovery with just a few seasons and episodes isn’t a huge pull for most unless they really love the show.

Now of course the show got cancelled over it partly due to Paramount hurting for money and cutting content. I’m sure that $100 million is looking mighty good right now.

Why the vitriol?

There’s a difference between deriding a corporate strategy and being a rude d*ck about a person for no good reason.

They clearly overestimated how much people wanted to watch Discovery or paying for another service to watch it and it cost Discovery in the end. A highly stupid move and the show probably could’ve went another 1-2 seasons.

And not being able to time the negotiations to coincide with when the service was up and running in more places was bonkers.

Yep! Made no sense. Especially since also Star Trek isn’t even that big abroad outside a few places, so it was never going to be a huge pull like it would be in America. I doubt few people in Italy were on pins and needles to get Discovery.

It wasn’t even people not wanting to pay for another service. Paramount+ simply wasn’t available in a lot of markets where people can watch Netflix.

Yeah obviously the bigger problem lol. Yeah none of it made any sense.

Talking about “shooting yourself on the foot”. Although sometimes I wonder how Paramount is being lead, with all the shenanigans about Trek movie announcement and now this total dropping of the ball. They should probably get a Ferengi to lead the company.

It’s wild. They waste money on a lot of things public and internal, but also are always imposing austerity measures – Paramount Pictures has probably been more known for being stingy over the last 35 years more than it has for its stretches of largesse. They announced a whole new slew of measures today that affect the studio, CBS, and Paramount+, on top of recent layoffs.

“SkyShowtime also includes the new Paramount original shows Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Prodigy. In addition, the service has every season of the classic Star Trek shows (TOS, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise).”

_____________________________________

Good for our fandom siblings across the pond who’ve been wanting to see the shows but have had to wait. But man, it really feels like CBS, Paramount, Viacom, or whatever corporate entity whose name we’re using this week to refer to Trek ’s owner-custodians has way more trouble than it should getting this franchise in front of appreciative eyeballs.

I wonder sometimes about the focus on exclusivity, and how it seems there’s typically just one carrier for a given Trek series in a given market. Not so many years ago (back when there was nothing newer in the franchise than Discovery ), at least here in the US one could stream the classic shows on not just one but several different services. Netflix, Hulu, Prime, and (for a short while) CBS: All Access all had the classic shows – TOS, TAS, TNG , DS9 , Voyager , Enterprise – simultaneously, rather than them being exclusive to just one single outlet. Eventually, as the old licensing agreements expired, the shows disappeared from Netflix, Hulu, and Prime (unless one got CBS:AA / Paramount+ as a Prime add-on channel), as they tried to make exclusive Trek a selling point for Paramount+, but that meant the franchise had less reach and exposure.

Obviously it’s better for us if Star Trek shows and movies are available through as many outlets as possible, but I can’t help but wonder whether it might be better for its corporate master, too. Would they ultimately do better keeping Star Trek exclusive to Paramount+ as a means of incentivizing subscriptions, or would the overall corporate empire make more money by licensing it out non-exclusively to a bunch of different services, like they did several years ago?

Only they have the data on which subscribers are only really watching for the legacy Star Trek content. I would think getting an infusion of licensing cash is a better business call than gatekeeping the legacy shows and movies since they can always claim Paramount+ is the only place to find the new shows. I understand the inclination to not try to feed the Netflix beast, but they have more money to burn than Paramount Global. It’s time to at least do some light “arms trading” again.

the netflix beast was paying for the entire discovery budget until paramount ended the deal before season 4 began. leaving the overseas fans with nothing. they killed the fanbase overseas and gave back 100 million dollars at the same time even though they weren’t ready to launch overseas p+. none of that made sense. and now netflix had prodigy which is kind of hilarious.

the only way trek grows is for people to find it… and no one’s gonna find shows exclusive on paramount plus. that means you have to be looking for trek specifically. i became a trekkie finding it accidentally on local tv years ago. they should sell trek everywhere… legacy or new show and new shows are soon to be legacy shows.

The issue for Paramount is that they can’t get a handle on how to best benefit from that growth. Licensing Trek out exposes it to more people and brings them lucrative fees and likely a fair amount of trickle down merchandising revenue. Probably would stoke some renewed interest in new content, be it legacy sequels or more shows like Discovery.

Licensing also benefits competing streamers and feeds them in a market Paramount has a vested interest in on two fronts – as a fellow streamer with a sizable base but profitability issues, and as a broadcaster with a huge but waning empire that Netflix wants to destroy.

If all competitors fall by the wayside and Netflix is the only streamer, then it will have too much outsized power in all aspects of negotiations, and that’s a real danger. As an aside, Hollywood studios really should have left Netflix, Apple and Amazon to negotiate with the unions separately – they are not playing the same long game.

Paramount is also so used to having an outsized stake in the distribution and revenue new Trek ventures generate, Prodigy being exclusively on a rival streamer it has no investment in is pretty wild.

In the end, content is still king and Paramount+ needs a big library and a steady stream of new shows to remain relevant, but I agree they could stand to start licensing again, otherwise they’ll never be able to afford paying for it.

i became a trekkie when i was home sick as a kid and came across it… city on the edge and ive loved all of it ever since… with varying degrees of love. i agree it should be available to everyone at some point so people can find it. if it’s exclusive to one streaming channel few people get then that means people need to search out trek specifically.

Originally I supported the idea of Star Trek being exclusive to one site. It would funnel fans to one site obviously and save them money in the long term. Seeing where things are today I couldn’t have been more wrong.

I obviously understand keeping the new shows in one place but I imagine it was the classic shows most people watched and that probably created more new fans for the base because it was accessible in so many places. I would see people saying they watch watched Star Trek for the first time on Netflix or Hulu.

Now it forces new fans to subscribe to a site many still don’t see eager to subscribe to. And when it was already on 3 other sites, chances are everyone had at least one of them as a regular subscriber.

It seems to have made the fanbase much smaller, especially since there seem to be very little new fans checking out the new shows because it’s just very limited on where to watch it

I’m really hoping in the future the classic shows gets distributed to other streamers again (but still staying on P+ of course). And maybe in time for the newer shows too. Paramount+ is just not a strong enough site to bring in more fans and the new shows feel like they are in a tiny bubble due to lack of exposure.

And when you have MAX which has over twice the amount of subs and with a higher monthly cost now licensing their DC content to Netflix again maybe it’s time for Paramount to follow suit

(this is more about paramount being a mess vs star trek but) paramount was getting paid 100 million plus from netflix to air discovery overseas which paid for the entire budget. when they gave the money back and took the show back, they acted so proud that they owned it all… they even announced it and bragged disco was all theirs. then they made the first season with no money coming in from netflix, cut it to 10 eps… and cancelled it before it even aired and delayed it a year. it’s strange. the show was free for them until they axed the netflix deal.

and i remember when that happened… so many overseas fans had the rug pulled out from under them. and it was done like days before the premiere. i remember ripping the episodes for people overseas and sending it to them because they had no other option.

going all the way back to the 70s and paramount’s attempt to create a new network using star trek which eventually turned into the motion picture… to them using voyager to launch UPN then enterprise on the CW and Discovery for cbs all access then paramount plus and who knows what is next… it just shows they’ve never had any idea what they are fully doing but they use star trek every time.

it’s amazing we have as much good star trek as we do thanks to the dedicated writers and creatives, considering the mismanagement at paramount for decades. i think the 80s were the most solid for the management side at paramount.

This idea that Netflix paid for the show is outdated and needs to die.

We have public records of Seasons 1 and 2 budgets based on the tax credits they received and the amount spent in Canada alone. Then add above-the-line costs and post-production.

https://www.mpa-canada.org/press/star-trek-discovery-on-an-economic-mission-for-ontario-spending-over-257-million-in-just-two-seasons/

netflix paid for the show completely. it was what it was. i worked at paramount and enterprise and have friends there who still are in the know and this is not only true it’s old news. i knew this before season 1 even ended. they gave netflix the money back then cut the order then ended it then erased prod and very quickly went from announcing a trek a week all year to 2 shows… and im sure the new cw-like show will be much cheaper. nothing anyone can do but truth is truth. trek always survives. and people always love the new shows 10-20 years later.

Yes despite it all we now have over 800 hours of it which is amazing even if you don’t like all of it.

Paramount clearly sees it’s value over 50 years later but it has been mismanaged here and there, the latest being the new movies and probably overestimating the amount of new shows since they are now cutting back on those and the films are still DOA despite having so much promise in the beginning.

But we are still getting a steady stream of new stories and content and it beats the dry well of having no new show on for over a decade and just a few Kelvin movies every 3-4 years.

As far as I’m aware SkyShowtime do not broadcast anything above 1080p, and no HDR… and it seems even the audio may be limited to stereo. Speaking of which, Prodigy on Netflix only has stereo sound and not the full 5.1!

Hilarious how some of the same fans who whine incessantly about DSC are suddenly so uber-concerned about Europe’s access to it.

Actually, you are not able to see Lower Decks season 3 and 4 in the Skyshowtime region as Amazon Prime only has season 1 and 2, at least in Denmark…

Kenneth Mitchell , the actor best known for his work in Star Trek: Discovery and Jericho , has died. He was 49.

The news of his death was announced in a post to X on his personal account. The actor had been battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) for over five years; a GoFundMe fundraising link was shared to Mitchell’s X account on Sunday, with the actor requesting that any gifts “be directed toward ALS research or in support of his children.”

TV Stars Who Died in 2024

He was perhaps best known for playing Klingons Kol, Kol-Sha, Tenavik and Aurellio in Paramount+’s Star Trek: Discovery between 2017 and 2021. He also voiced several characters in an episode of Star Trek: Lower Decks in 2020.

He went on to appear in episodes of other series including Odyssey 5, Grey’s Anatomy, CSI: Miami, Lie to Me, Ghost Whisperer, Hawaii: Five-0, NCIS: Los Angeles, Bones, Switched at Birth, The Astronaut Wives Club, Nancy Drew and more.

On the film side, Mitchell most notably played Ralph Cox in the 2004 sports movie Miracle . His other film credits include Captain Marvel, Blood Honey and Home of the Giants , among others.

Mitchell most recently played Joe in three episodes of FX’s The Old Man in 2022.

I had no idea he had ALS. That’s just way too young to go. :( I enjoyed watching him on Jericho. Rest in peace.

Giving you a high five and a hug, because those are my thoughts exactly.

He was on Discovery between 2017 and 2020.

Another lost far too soon. BTW, those dates for Star Trek: Discovery may not be accurate, I don’t believe it was airing between 2007-2010. And I’d no idea he’d provided some of the voices for Lower Decks, good to know.

I was so heartbroken reading the post on instagram this morning. He truly lived life to the fullest, esp after his diagnosis, brought so much joy to everyone around him. It really showed. There’s a wonderful video (I think it can be found on the official Star Trek site) where he talks about his love of Trek and his castmates talk about working with him. The kind of tribute that usually comes after someone dies and you kinda go “I wish they’d done this before”–but here, they did. Also, the wording of this post is a bit misleading, it implies he ONLY played Klingons on Trek. His final character, Aurellio, was human, he appeared without makeup; they even made a futuristic upright wheelchair for him. I will never forget his scenes in those episodes b/c they gave his character a little speech about why he’d joined the nefarious group he was part of–but it was plainly a very thoughtful way to give Kenneth a chance to talk about what being part of the franchise meant to him. He really put his heart into it, you could tell he knew he might be saying goodbye and wanted to express his true feelings. Frakes’ direction was very gentle and thoughtful in those scenes as well. I rarely get that emotional just watching actors act, esp at such a subtle scene from a guest character, but the emotions there on both sides of the camera were so *real* it completely took me. He was an amazing soul.

ALS sucks!! RIP!

I’ve loved watching Kenneth Mitchell in anything he was in. There’s a great Star Trek interview with him with cast and production interviews on YouTube – very emotional and worth a watch: youtube . com/watch?v=mQklUgy89F0

Thanks for the link. Definitely an emotional interview. Very well done by the Star Trek crew.

Ah, I didn’t know this existed. Thank you for sharing. I’m way behind on my Star Trek Discovery, but I plan on catching up, soon.

What a beautiful and emotional interview. Thank you for the link. What a loss.

Oh, damn. This is sad. I’m currently watching “Jericho” for the very first time and am enjoying Kenneth Mitchell as “Eric” on the show. I was familiar with his work before this, too. He was a fellow Canadian and good looking, wonderful guy. RIP

You’re in for a treat. That first season of Jericho goes down as one of my top favorite seasons of any series. It was just so good.

I just rewatched Jericho recently, and rewatched Odyssey 5 around the same time. Kenneth was great in both.

I am so sorry to hear this. I had no idea he had ALS. It sounds like he faced any of his challenges with courage and determination and will be missed by so many. Deepest sympathies to his family, friends, fans and anyone who loved him. Sadly I have known two people who have passed from ALS and both were way too young. May he Rest in Peace. . ALS is one reason that I am glad that we have MAID in Canada for those who wish to use it.

Condolences to his family, friends, and fellow castmates past and present. I did not know about his parts in Discovery; I will have to keep an eye out when I eventually catch up to later seasons. The character of Eric in Jericho had a lot going on where he could be heroic, hypocritical, and even hatable at points, and Mitchell delivered on the complexity of that.

So sorry to hear that Kenneth Mitchell passed away. He always reminded me of Peyton Manning. RIP Kenneth😥

Watch the bittersweet trailer for 'Star Trek: Discovery's final season (video)

The end is nigh when Paramount+'s flagship space fantasy series returns April 4 for a 10-episode run.

It's been a long and somewhat bumpy road for Paramount Plus' " Star Trek: Discovery " since it first touched down on the streaming platform back in 2017 as the first "Star Trek" small screen enterprise in 12 years. It's taken a couple of seasons to moderate its tone and style but it seems on track to bring it all home safely starting on April 4, to stick the landing and satiate most temperamental fans.

Now with the turbulent events of season 4 in the rear view mirror after finally confronting the Dark Matter Entity, it's time for one last heroic mission for Captain Michael Burnham and her valiant crew into the cold inky abyss of deep space to try and locate a powerful treasure as this latest sentimental trailer explains. (Check out our Star Trek streaming guide to see when and where to catch the latest Trek shows.)

Here's the official synopsis:

"The fifth and final season will find Captain Burnham and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery uncovering a mystery that will send them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries. But there are others on the hunt as well — dangerous foes who are desperate to claim the prize for themselves and will stop at nothing to get it."

"Star Trek: Discovery's" season five cast contains Sonequa Martin-Green (Captain Michael Burnham), Doug Jones (Saru), Anthony Rapp (Paul Stamets), Mary Wiseman (Sylvia Tilly), Wilson Cruz (Dr. Hugh Culber), David Ajala (Cleveland “Book” Booker), Blu del Barrio (Adira) and Callum Keith Rennie (Rayner).

In this final preview for the endgame season, USS Discovery captain Michael Burnham acknowledges that "It has been a helluva journey, but everything ends someday." As the entire crews gathers for one last adventure, Starfleet's Kovich (David Cronenberg) warns that "the greatest treasure in the known galaxy is out there. It's more important that you can imagine."

That's the basic launch point of a cosmic scavenger hunt to locate a puzzle box that looks like something right out of director Luc Besson's "The Fifth Element," and is described by Burnham as "one of the greatest powers ever known," while various competing factions attempt to claim this priceless universal artifact for themselves, including imposing foes L'ak (Elias Toufexis) and Moll (Eve Harlow).

Canadian actor Kenneth Mitchell, who continued working after ALS diagnosis, dead at 49

Mitchell appeared on tv in jericho and the old man, on the big screen in miracle and captain marvel.

Toronto actor Kenneth Mitchell who found consistent work in television and film, even after a 2018 diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), has died. He was 49.

Mitchell's family said in a post on his Instagram account that the actor from Star Trek: Discovery and Jericho died on Saturday.

"For five and a half years, Ken faced a series of awful challenges from ALS. And in truest Ken fashion, he managed to rise above each one with grace and commitment, to living a full and joyous life in each moment," the statement read. "He lived by the principles that each day is a gift and we never walk alone."

After experiencing health problems and wondering if he shared his mother's diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, Mitchell was told in August 2018 he was suffering from ALS.

Mitchell told People Magazine in 2020 it was a moment of "complete disbelief," and like "watching that scene where someone is being told that they have a terminal illness."

Also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, after the 1930s New York Yankees star, the disease destroys nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord needed to walk, talk, swallow and, eventually, breathe. Most people suffering with ALS die within a few years of diagnosis.

By the year following his diagnosis, he was using a wheelchair. In Star Trek: Discovery , he portrayed Aurellio, a scientist who uses a hovercraft wheelchair, and in the Hulu series The Old Man starring Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow, he played an FBI agent who uses a wheelchair.

Mitchell told People it was "empowering" to be able to continue to work.

"Although it feels more challenging, people are accommodating and making it work," he said. "They do it in a way that they don't ever make me feel like I'm dragging things out or a hindrance or anything."

Didn't originally pursue acting

Mitchell's path to the screen was unlikely, as he told the Guelph Mercury in 2004. After attending Earl Haig Secondary School in Toronto, he attended the University of Guelph for landscape architecture studies. After finding work in Guelph and Toronto after university, a friend introduced him to an agent.

After appearing in commercials and an independent productions, one of Mitchell's first career breaks was in a recurring role in the Showtime series Leap Year and Odyssey 5 , which were both shot in Canada.

Along with guest spots on shows like Grey's Anatomy and CSI: Miami and a small but pivotal role as one of the last players cut on the storied 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team in the film Miracle, he also landed a supporting role in the Colin Farrell-led The Recruit .

By that point, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue work.

"I was blessed to start in Toronto, build up my legs and a body of work," he told the Guelph Mercury. "But to achieve what I want in this business, the best place to be is out here."

He landed a role as a series regular in the post-apocalyptic CBS drama Jericho  portraying Eric Green, the brother of the lead character played by Skeet Ulrich. The series was cancelled after one season, but after a campaign from devoted fans it returned for a limited run to wind up its storylines.

"You will never ever be forgotten!! You are embedded in the hearts and minds of so many," Ulrich posted on social media on Sunday. "You will always be an inspiration! All my love to you and your beautiful family."

Mitchell's work continued apace after Jericho , with featured or recurring roles in series Switched at Birth , The Astronaut Wives Club, Nancy Drew and Frequency , as well as a part on the big screen in Captain Marvel , starring Brie Larson.

"Thank you for being a beautiful light on this earth. Rest in peace," actress Lea Thompson, who worked with Mitchell on Switched at Birth , posted on Instagram on Sunday.

One of Mitchell's last social media posts was on the five-year anniversary of his ALS diagnosis, in August.

"I'm so thankful to have this day in front of me," he posted. "It's been a long 5 years. So much lost, so much gained. Incredibly hard times, mixed with so many more blessings."

Mitchell is survived by his wife, the American actress Susan May Pratt, daughter Lilah and son Kallum.

The actor disclosed his illness in a 2020 interview with People magazine.

“I think it, over time, became the theme of us accepting this with grace,” he told the publication. “Trying to see the beauty in it, in a way. I’ll never forget, one of my Star Trek costars told me, because they had dealt with some trying times with illnesses and stuff, and I remember them communicating to me, saying, ‘You have a choice. You can look at this in many different ways, but maybe try to look at this like a gift where you get to experience life in a way that most people don’t.’”

Mitchell played three roles in three seasons on “Star Trek: Discovery.” The last character, Aurelio, who used a hoverchair, was created to reflect the actor’s need for a wheelchair. He also voiced three characters in the first season of “Star Trek: Lower Decks.”

For two seasons, Mitchell played Eric Green opposite Skeet Ulrich in “Jericho,” a 2006 CBS drama about life in a small Kansas town following a nuclear attack, which was notably brought back for a second season by a fan campaign after being canceled by the network.

In a two-decade career, the actor played more than 50 roles, including TV appearances in “The Astronaut Wives Club” as Deke Slayton, “Ghost Whisperer,” “Switched at Birth” and “Frequency.” Film roles included “Miracle,” starring Kurt Russell, in which Mitchell played Ralph Cox, the last player cut from the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team, and “Captain Marvel.” His most recent role was a 2022 episode of the FX series “The Old Man,” starring Jeff Bridges.

Mitchell was born in Toronto, Canada, on Nov. 25, 1974, and is survived by his wife Susan, their children Lilah and Kallum, his parents Diane and David, and his brother Sean.
