Madrid to Rome

I was concern with this trip because with did not have a lot of information about Europamundo but overall the trip was great. The tour guides Marina, Linux and Anibal were great took care of the hotel reservations, give us a ton of historical information during the trip, give us suggestion for restaurants were to eat in several cities. We enjoy the inside trip (you have to paid additional) to La Sagrada Familia cathedral. The tour guide lady that give us the tour give us a ton of information of the history, symbols, architect design thinking, etc. We love it. My family also love Switzerland, specially the climb to Glacier 3000, they have fun with the snow. Italy was also good, I was a disappointed that we could not see IlDuomo in Milan due to a concern but Rome was good an compensated for the lost in Milan. Overall as I say the trip was good, definitive will use Europamundo again.

The only problem was my transport from the Civitavecchia port to the Rome hotel never arrived and I had to take a taxi. Tour guide Lucy made sure I was reimbursed for the taxi fare.

Cosmos Tour Director Gabrielle and Driver Oscar are the best! Enjoyed seeing Spain, France and Italy and would recommend this tour. The only suggestion I would have would be to have less one night stays in hotels. Two nights is fine, but the one night stays got tiresome.

• Enjoy plenty of free time in Rome to discover the ancient Colosseum, stroll through Vatican City and gaze up towards the gods inside St Peter's Basilica.
• Less time spent travelling; more time to explore each destination. The primary means of transportation on this trip is by train. Trains are a fast way to cross long distances, allowing you to avoid traffic jams and arrive right into the city centre. They are comfortable and all have toilets, however, can sometimes be quite busy. Please note that you'll have to carry your own luggage on and off the train, so make sure it doesn’t exceed our weight and size recommendations. You can find specifics under ‘Packing’ in the ‘Essential Trip Information’ section.
• Europe is steeped in majestic old buildings, and often there are no lifts or escalators, particularly in some train stations or hotels. You may have to carry your bags up and down stairs, but the trek will be worth it.
• Don’t let the heat keep you from exploring the world! Summer temperatures can be very high (over 40°C), which can make things uncomfortable. It’s important to use sun protection, wear layers to combat the heat, and drink plenty of water.
• Hotels in Europe often don't have double beds, but rather two single beds that can be pushed together. In some cases, bathroom facilities will be shared rather than ensuite.
• On this trip you must pack as lightly as possible because you will be expected to carry your own bag and although you won't be required to walk long distances with your luggage (max 30 minutes), we strongly recommend keeping the weight under 15kg / 33lb. Most travellers carry their luggage in a backpack or suitcase, although an overnight bag with a shoulder strap would suffice if you travel lightly. Smaller bags or backpacks with wheels are convenient although we recommend your bag has carry straps to accommodate the cobbled streets, uneven surfaces, stairs and steps you are likely to encounter while carrying your luggage. You'll also need a day pack/bag to carry water and a camera etc for day trips.

Barcelona's quirky character and fabulous Catalan cuisine mixes seamlessly with a ground-breaking art scene, Gothic architecture, superb dining and a non-stop nightlife, making it a city you won't soon forget. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 7 pm today – you can arrive at any time before this. If you arrive early, use free time to get your bearings of Barcelona. There are plenty of galleries, cafes and historic corners to keep you busy. Gaudi's bizarre La Sagrada Familia Basilica is not be missed. As there's not much time in Barcelona, we suggest you arrive a few days early so you can get under the skin of this great city. The heart of Catalonia prides itself as a gastronomic centre and so this evening, perhaps venture out to taste the reputation for yourself. You could take a tapas crawl through rustic Catalan dishes in the funky neighbourhood of El Born.

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place. If you would like to visit La Sagrada Familia, it’s best to pre book your tickets before the tour. On this trip the best time to visit is before the group meeting today, ideally in the morning or early afternoon.

Travel north today by train and climb into the Spanish Pyrenees, which form a mighty barrier between the Iberian Peninsula and the rest of Europe, arriving in the small town of Ribes de Freser (approximately 2 hours). This is your base for next two days. Beautifully placed Ribes de Freser is a low-key town situated at the confluence of three different rivers; Freser, Rigard and Segadell. The town is not only an important tourist centre in this part of Pyrenees, but it’s also well known for its mineral water and milk products. Make sure you sample these, perhaps in your free time during the rest of today. The town is a great place to relax with the views of beautiful Pyrenees Mountains in the background. In the evening, perhaps head out for dinner with the group.

Today, enjoy stunning views from a cogwheel train ride into the Nuria Valley. This train line was first opened in the 1930s and connects Ribes de Freser with Queralbs, making a spectacular and magical snaking journey up to the small ski town and pilgrimage site of Nuria. It crosses viaducts, travels past dramatic cliffs, through tunnels, forest and waterfalls, finally arriving at 2000 metres above sea level after one of the most magnificent rides in the Pyrenees. Along with the cogwheel train journey, you will find time to stretch your legs on a hike in the scenic surrounds. Take to the hills for a day of hiking in the Pyrenees and be prepared for some steep ascents. Climb up through the forest to a fantastic viewpoint of the mountain peaks (weather permitting). Don't forget your camera, as the alpine scenery is spectacular. Return to Ribes de Freser in late afternoon. Tonight it's time for an included paella dinner.

On today's hike please be prepared for some steep sections on uneven and rocky terrain. Please make sure you bring sturdy trainers or light hiking boots. Feel free to opt out of the hike if you prefer to take it easy upon arrival at the final stop of the cogwheel railway.

Continue your adventure across the French border today with a combination of a train journey and private transfer to Carcassonne (approximately 4.5 hours). The stunning medieval French city of Carcassonne looks like it's straight out of a classic fairytale and is famous for its 53 watchtowers and double-walled fortifications. The first walls were built in Gallo-Roman style with later additions made in 13th and 14th centuries, making it the biggest and most beautiful medieval construction in Europe. For good reason, this World Heritage-listed fortress is the second most visited tourist site in France after the Eiffel Tower. There’ll be plenty of time to explore and uncover the memorable castle and ramparts, crossing the medieval stone-arched bridge and navigating the cobbled streets that form a spider’s web through the town. You'll have plenty of time to explore and uncover Carcassonne’s secrets. Chateau Comtal, a 12th-century fortress within Le Cite, which offers archaeological exhibits and a tour of the inner ramparts, is certainly an interesting option for a free afternoon. This evening, if weather permits, watch a golden sunset over this medieval landscape.

Leave Carcassonne behind today and take the train into the French region of Provence, through heartland scenery that has long attracted the brushes of Impressionist painters, settling in the town of Arles (approximately 3 hours). Once a provincial capital of ancient Rome, Arles is now famed for inspiring the paintings of Van Gogh, which can be seen at the local gallery that takes his name. On arrival, take a walk around this town stepped in Provençal culture and immerse yourself in the picturesque landscapes that surround you. There’s also an included trip to see the beautiful double rows of arches of the Arles Amphitheatre in the afternoon, an ancient Roman arena still in use after 1000 years. Later, what better way to round off the day than a leisurely stroll, relax, and a coffee or ‘pastis’ at the shaded terraces of the atmospheric outdoor cafe that once paid host to the famous painter.

Enjoy a free day in the town of Arles. Perhaps follow the Van Gogh trail to see sites that the artist drew on as subjects for his paintings, finishing at the Vincent Van Gogh Foundation to browse the changing exhibitions of the Post-Impressionist painter, as well as temporary exhibitions of other famous artists. Discover Gothic architecture in a walled city where the Pope once took refuge, uncover an ancient Roman necropolis and theatre, or stroll past an ancient multi-storey aqueduct. You could also head outside of the town to the Camargue Nature Park, a beautifully bio-diverse region, and cycle among pink flamingos that frolick in sandy reed beds. The Antiques Museum, Arlaten Ethnographic Museum and Reattu Museum back in town also provide lots of culture to discover. Otherwise, you might simply relax by the Rhone River and watch the world go by. A wander around the town at night becomes an art history lesson, with scenes recognisable from famous artworks like ‘Cafe Terrace at Night’.

Take the train to Nice today, which should take you around five hours. The star of the Riviera and a great base from which to explore the rest of the Cote d'Azur, Nice boasts both public and private beaches, with countless opportunities to relax. Your afternoon and evening are free but try not to miss the flower and evening markets on Place Saleya. Take some time to explore Nice’s old centre, walking its maze of staircases and lanes, fine Baroque churches, and the famous Promenade des Anglais – a hot spot for street theatre and local artists. The Old Quarter is a warren of alleyways, boutique shops, cafes and restaurants just waiting to be discovered.

Today is free for you to further explore Nice as you like, there's even the option of taking a day trip to the glitzy city of Cannes, which only costs around EUR14 by train. The famed film festival host is a place of sun, sand, style and shopping, while the old town still maintains a Provencal feel. You might like to visit the cliff-top village of Eze, known as 'The Eagles Nest' which is just a few kilometres outside of Nice. This medieval town is a true gem – it’s vaulted, narrow streets are filled with art galleries, workshops and gastronomic restaurants and at the top is a ruined medieval castle commanding one of the most beautiful panoramas on the Cote d'Azur. Back in Nice there are museums to explore, tiny shops in the retro neighbourhood of Vieux to browse, beaches to lounge on, scenic gardens to discover, and delicious French fare to feast on.

This morning after breakfast, spend the day travelling by train across the Italian border to the once important naval base of La Spezia, now the gateway to the gorgeous Cinque Terre, or ‘Five lands’ in English (approximately 6 hours). The name comes from the five tiny villages – Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore – whose position, wedged into a series of coves between sheer cliffs, makes it one of the highlights of the whole of Italy. On arrival in La Spezia there won't be too much time to explore yet, but after checking into your hotel perhaps get your bearings of the area with a short walk around the pedestrian zone on Via del Prione to the gardens along the harbour, or head out for dinner with the group. Afterwards, you might like to relax and rest up before the walk along the famous Cinque Terre route tomorrow.

This morning venture out on the footpaths of Cinque Terre (Five Lands), a region of Italy famed for its coastline and pastel villages. The footpaths that run between the villages were once the only way to travel in the region, and take you through olive groves, vineyards and on to idyllic vistas. Walking the entire network of paths can take around five hours (12 kilometres in total) and you will need a good level of fitness. You can also choose to walk just a few sections, which will still unveil a great amount of majestic scenery. Some sections of path can be difficult, as there are challenging uphill stretches, narrow paths, steep cliffs and foot bridges. Please remember to bring comfortable footwear such as trainers or light hiking shoes. It's also possible to take the train between any of the villages or back to the group's base whenever you want. After working up an appetite, take advantage of the foods of the Liguria region with a pesto class – focaccia is also a speciality in this area and makes a great start to lunch. The rest of the day is free for you to enjoy at your own leisure. In the evening, there's no better way to recover from your day of walking with more indulgence in delicious Mediterranean food.

Due to recent landslides in the area, it is currently not possible to walk the Via dell'Amore and the coastal section between Manarola and Corniglia. There are alternative inland routes, however these are of a higher physical rating and involve steep ups and downs. It is possible to take the train or a bus for these sections. Due to safety reasons some sections of any path can be closed at short notice. Please remember to bring comfortable footwear such as trainers or light hiking shoes.

Depart Cinque Terre today and catch a train to Pisa (approximately 1 hour). Divided in two by the River Arno, the heart of Pisa is the Santa Maria quarter on the north bank. Here there'll be ample time for you to visit the world-famous Leaning Tower, as well as the Duomo (Piazza dei Miracoli, once the largest in Europe) and Pisa Baptistry. Please note that it's not always possible to climb the tower, although you'll have plenty of time to take pictures and explore the city. The tower was built in the 12th century, but its foundation was on shifting sand and clay, meaning that it now leans at an angle of 4 degrees (after restoration and stabilising work). Wander the shopping streets, from high-end boutiques to speciality book and antiques stores, and perhaps enjoy lunch and an aperitif in a backstreet restaurant before returning to the station in the afternoon and taking the train to Florence (approximately 2 hours). After checking in to your hotel, join your leader for quick orientation walk. The rest of your evening is free to explore the city of the Renaissance.

• Pisa - Leaning Tower of Pisa - EUR20

After breakfast head out into Florence, one of the most culturally rich and beautiful cities in Italy, known to many as the beating heart of Tuscany. The Medicis, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Brunelleschi, Machiavelli, Donatello and Michelangelo all lived in Florence at the height of their creative reign. It's impossible to see everything in this Renaissance wonderland, so take your time and enjoy it. Perhaps visit the Uffizi, one of the world's oldest art galleries, or walk up to Piazzale Michelangelo, which is set on a hill on the south bank of the Arno River, to take in beautiful views of the city – a lovely way to while away the day. There are plenty of sights to see during your time in Florence – don't forget to visit Michelangelo's David, housed in the Galleria dell'Accademia. As the evening comes around, join the locals in taking a passeggiata, a leisurely socialising stroll, perhaps between piazza Beccaria and piazza della Repubblica.

The individual Florentine State Museums have slightly different opening times and closing days between them but the website firenzemusei.it has everything you need to know about all of them, including the option to purchase tickets. We suggest that you pre-book your visit to the Uffizi, as this museum experiences enormous queues (up to 5 hours) all year round. Your leader can be of assistance. Leave Florence early in the morning by bus for a day tour to Siena (approximately 1.5 hours). Surrounded by olive groves and the vineyards of Chianti, Siena is one of the most idyllic cities of Tuscany. Wander the tiny alleyways and lively piazzas, and search out the unique Piazza del Campo, a grand fan-shaped piazza built on the site of the old Roman forum, and where the famous Palio horse race takes place (twice annually in mid-July and the end of August). Siena has an energetic and friendly student atmosphere thanks to one of the oldest universities in the world being located here. Be sure to visit the small but stunning Siena Cathedral, and see the statue of the Capitoline Wolf which was brought here by Romulus and Remus, the mythical founders of Rome. You will be back in Florence for the evening, which is free to enjoy as you please. Food is also a major part of the city's identity, so perhaps explore some of the culinary delicacies on offer from across Tuscany. Regional specialities are noted for their simplicity and fine flavour, and the use of high-quality olive oil, cannellini beans and fresh herbs.

In the morning, take the train to Rome (approximately 2 hours), and remember that while here, the best attitude is ‘when in Rome’! Join your leader on an orientation walk around the city, where you can see some of the iconic sights such as the Colosseum and Arch of Constantine, the Forum (centre of ancient Rome), the Victor Emmanuel Monument, the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona, Spanish Steps, Via Dei Condotti and Piazza Venezia. No visit would be complete without a trip to Vatican City and St Peter's Basilica, so check with your leader for options and tips on how to fit that in a day. Entry to the Basilica is free and there's a small charge to climb the dome for a panorama over the city. Use your free time to also visit the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel. Rome is packed full of restaurants and trattorias that cater to every taste and budget. Eating in trattorias will give you a chance to sample some Italian wines, with house choices usually very good and affordable. Head out in the evening with the group for a final farewell gastronomic fling.

3 Weeks in Spain, France, and Italy

When I decided to spend 20 days across these two iconic countries, it was more of a challenge. I’ve been to all three, but on separate trips . I really loved each of them, and the most I think of it, I can really see the reasons why these are the top destinations in Europe.

Now, not everyone has the time to take many trips. Trying to see as many countries as possible in a single trip is quite popular. So, I went and challenged myself to spend 3 weeks in Spain, France, and Italy and see if it was possible .

Spoiler alert: it can be done! But it’s not for everyone . It’s a tight-pack itinerary, but with careful planning and knowing that you can stick to that plan, you can do it.

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE GOING TO SPAIN, FRANCE, AND ITALY

Spain is the largest country in Southern Europe and shares a border with France in its northern region. It is also one of the most visited countries in Europe. Spain is known for its food, music, arts, literature, siesta, flamenco, and more.

France, on the other hand, is located primarily in Western Europe and sits just above Spain. France has numerous world-famous landmarks and food, such as baguette, cheese, and fine wine.

Last but not least is Italy, located near the Mediterranean Sea. It shares borders with a few countries, including France on the north and west. It also enclaves microstates of San Marino and Vatican City.

When is the best time to go

The best time to visit Spain, France, and Italy is generally during the shoulder seasons of April to June and September to October . You’ll enjoy pleasant weather and fewer crowds.

The peak tourist season is in the summer months, July and August when the weather is hottest and the places are most crowded. December is also a busy season for these three destinations. During these months, it gets really expensive due to the high demand.

Rainy seasons vary : Spain and Italy’s wetter months are usually October to December, while France’s northern parts see more rain from November to January.

Are 3 weeks enough for Spain, France, and Italy

As I mentioned before, it’s possible but will require careful planning. Consider visiting 3 cities and travel by air most of the time if each destination is more than 4 hours of driving, bus, or train ride.

You can also be very strategic in choosing the cities. For example, if you include Paris, you can take a day trip to Dunkirk and Calais.

If you choose Marseille, you can travel to Nice and explore Southern France more as a day trip. The same goes for Seville and Malaga in Southern Spain; it allows you to see more cities since these are in the centre of major attractions.

So, look at the map and pick which cities are well-located.

What to pack

If you’re visiting during the summer season, packing comfortable and breathable clothing is highly recommended. Comfortable walking shoes to sandals are needed for visiting Europe .

On the other hand, for those who plan to come during the winter or fall season, make sure you bring warm clothes. Aim for layering rather than a bulky winter jacket. We have a c ompilation of packing lists for a 3-week trip depending on the season.

How to get around

This all depends on your destination. France and Italy both have amazing train systems and are quite affordable, too. Spain, on the other hand, has a rail network as well but not as intensive.

I really recommend you consider travelling by air to save you time . But first, check if points A to B can be done by bus or train (somewhere around 4 hours).

All these three destinations can be travelled by car rental too. However, the cars are usually in manual transmission. By bus will be the most affordable option, but also the slowest.

Language and currency

The official language of France is French . Most locals who work in the hospitality industry can speak English, but outside that, it can be a challenge. This is because French people don’t enjoy speaking English.

The opposite can be said about Spain. The official language there is Spanish, but many locals enjoy speaking English . However, in smaller towns and rural areas, English may be less commonly spoken.

Italy can be a hit-and-miss, where the official language is Italian . In my experience, lots of young people are happy to speak English with foreigners, but the older generation might ignore you.

Make sure to learn some basic words and carry a translation app with you, especially for France. Learning some basic words will also help you with navigation, and it’s a great way to show the locals respect and appreciation for their culture.

France, Spain, and Italy use the Euro (€) as the main currency . Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in France, Spain, and Italy , especially in cities and tourist areas. However, cash is still preferred for small transactions, in local markets, and in rural areas. It’s wise to carry some cash for such instances.

Average travel cost for 3 weeks in Spain, France, and Italy

This can really vary a lot, but the season is what affects the cost of a vacation in these three destinations. France is the most costly, followed by Italy, making Spain the most affordable on this list.

However, during the peak season (summer and Christmas), the prices gets nearly double when it comes to accommodation, transportation, and tours.

On average, you can plan €150 a day, so for 3 weeks, that will cost you around €3,000 . This allows you to book a private room, sign up for mid-range tours, use trains or even planes to get from one city to another and eat out in a decent restaurant.

For a budget trip, €90 can do it (€1,800 total) . You will be staying in a dorm room in a hostel, signing up for free tours (tip-based), taking buses, and visiting convenience stores or supermarkets for meals.

For those looking for luxury experiences such as honeymooners or anniversary celebrations, €350 a day per person or around €7,500 for three weeks is realistic. With this budget, you can sleep in 4 or 5-star hotels, take premium tours, get around with private vehicles, and enjoy fine dining.

If you’re visiting during the busy season, make sure to book your accommodation at least 6 months in advance to have plenty of choices.

Spain, France, and Italy are all located in Europe, are members of the EU, and are part of the Schengen Area. This means that they all implement the same visa.

If you hold a passport from the UK, New Zealand, Canada, Australia, the US, some parts of Latin America, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, and some parts of the Gulf country – you can travel to Spain, France, and Italy without a visa for up to 90 days (in total, not 90 days in each country).

You can book a flight to Paris, then fly out of Barcelona back to your home country, for example. You don’t need to fly into and fly out of the same city.

For the rest of the world, you must apply for a Schengen visa at the nearest Spanish, Italian, or French embassy/consulate. You must send in your application to the embassy of which country you plan to enter first.

For example, if you plan to start your trip in Italy, you must obtain a visa from the Italian Embassy. EU passport holders have freedom of movement in these destinations.

Other travel tips

I personally always book the accommodation first because these are the ones that get booked up fast. At the time of writing this, I have a plan to go to Europe in the summer, which is 9 months away. But I also booked my hotel.

3 WEEKS IN SPAIN, FRANCE, AND ITALY ITINERARY

If you ask me which of these countries is my favourite, I honestly won’t be able to answer you because each of them offers a unique experience, fantastic dishes, and extraordinary history.

Lastly is the island of Capri , located in the Tyrrhenian Sea of the Sorrento Peninsula. Just like Amal Coast, Capri is also famous for jet setters. This place is filled with exquisite villas, immaculately manicured gardens, and stunning natural vistas.

Ancient ruins, city tours and cannoli on a family tour of western Sicily

Start in Palermo and head west for a family adventure featuring street food, ancient ruins and a magical night tour of the city.

Italians may flock to Sicily’s soft sands in summer, but this far-flung Mediterranean island is far more than just a beach destination. Families can scale Mount Etna in giant off-road jeep buses, feast on classic Sicilian sweets and delve into archaeology at well-preserved ruin complexes like the Valley of the Temples. Older kids, meanwhile, can satisfy any gangster fascination by exploring mafia heritage in Palermo and seeking out The Godfather filming sites in the quiet mountain villages. And with the island lying closer to Africa than Rome, its southerly climate makes it a great choice for off-season travels around Easter and October.

Palermo by night

To beat the heat of the Sicilian capital in summer, try venturing into town after dusk for a guided night tour , when Palermo’s landmarks are magically illuminated. The walk can take in city highlights such as the medieval Kalsa district, the Arabesque domes of San Giovanni degli Eremiti, the Norman cathedral of Monreale and UNESCO-listed Zisa palace.

Gangster’s paradise

Unpick the island’s deep-rooted connection with the Sicilian Mafia, known locally as Cosa Nostra, at Palermo’s No Mafia Memorial museum . It explains the origins of the crime cartel and the government’s efforts to quash the organisation after the Second World War. If you’ve got more time, there are also Mafia-related tours taking in the eastern villages of Savoca and Forza d’Agro, which were key filming locations for The Godfather — a good bet if you’ve got any movie-mad teens in tow.  

Street-food specialities

Sicily’s original thick-crusted pizza is a must try. There’s a topping for every palate so picky eaters are bound to find something they like; the more adventurous should go for the classic, which includes anchovies, herbs and strong cheese on a passata base. For dessert it’s cannoli, deep-fried pastry tubes filled with sweet ricotta, that take centre stage. Arancini — fried risotto balls — are another favourite for a cheap meal on the go. A Palermo street-food tour is a fun way to explore for those whose kids love to try new dishes.  

Sicily’s sweet-making centre

With its sloping cobbled streets and crowning castle, Erice — around 70 miles west of Palermo — has a fairytale quality. But in Sicily this town is best known for its almond pastries — especially those made by local pastry chef Maria Grammatico , whose stories have been immortalised in the biography Bitter Almonds, by Mary Taylor Simeti. Follow the sweet scent of powdered sugar down winding lanes to find her old-fashioned bakery and encourage the kids to order belli e brutti — ‘beautiful and ugly’ — a buttery bite-size pastry laced with almonds and lemon.

Archaeology discoveries

Sicily has more than its fair share of ruins and many of the best are in the west of the island. Closest to Palermo is the fifth-century Segesta Archaeological Park , around 47 miles west of the capital, which offers panoramic views from a Hellenic theatre atop Monte Barbaro. But Sicily’s finest ruins can be found at the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento on the southwest coast — a UNESCO World Heritage site with one of the world’s best-preserved Greek temples.  

Volcano tours to Mt Etna

  The east of the island is famed for its succession of exquisite baroque towns in the south and the cone of Mount Etna on the east coast. Towering 3,329 metres high, Europe’s tallest volcano is also one of Sicily’s seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites — and a family favourite because of how close kids can usually get to the fuming calderas. The trip starts with a cable-car ride up to 2,500 metres, from where 4x4 jeep buses carry travellers higher on guided tours of the lunar-like landscape and smoking volcano craters. Tours are available from Catania, Taormina or Messina, but keep an eye on the local news — Etna last spewed lava as recently as November 2023.  

Where to stay

Is it possible to do a day trip from Rome to Tuscany?

Want to travel from Rome to Tuscany on a day trip? Lonely Planet writer, Paula Hardy, tells you how to make that happen.

Last year she was back in Rome and Florence researching for new pocket guidebooks. Here, she answers a reader's question about how to take a day trip from Rome to Tuscany.

Question:  On my upcoming trip I'll be visiting Rome for the first time, but would love to see a bit more of Italy as well. Is it possible to take a day trip to Tuscany from Rome? 

Answer: Yes, you can do a day trip from Rome to Tuscany , but be warned it will be a whistle-stop tour. After all, Tuscany is one of Italy’s blockbuster regions, stuffed with medieval towns, Renaissances art cities, historic country castles, world-class vineyards, gorgeous walking trails and unforgettable restaurants . It’s hard to experience all that in day. But if you’ve only got a day and want a little taste of Tuscany’s bella vita (good life), it can be done.

First things first, it’s good to get an understanding of what’s where and consider exactly what kind of experience you’d like. Is seeing Florence non-negotiable or do you want to get out into the countryside and sample some Tuscan wines? Or, would you rather visit unique medieval towns like San Gimignano and then linger over a long lunch instead? Or, do you want to see as many sights as possible and are happy with a picnic lunch en route? These preferences all dictate quite different trips.

Rome to Tuscany by car

You can easily hire a car for a day in Rome and work out a self-drive tour, but bear in mind as a first-time visitor navigating will take you more time and as a driver you won’t get to enjoy the views out the window in the same way. Then there’s the eternal problem of parking in Tuscany’s tiny (and often pedestrianized) historic centers. Alternatively, you can book one of  RomeCabs varied itineraries. It offers a car and driver, but you’ll need to sort out and book your own lunch and you won’t have a tour guide – although an LP guidebook can help you there!  

If you book onto a tour, you’ll be in a small group and will be riding in a minibus. When assessing itineraries bear in mind distances and traveling time. Pisa , with its famous Leaning Tower , and medieval Lucca with its historic walled center, are 4 hours and 370km (230 miles) away from Rome; Volterra , Italy’s oldest city, and lovely Renaissance Florence are 3.5 hours (280km/174 miles) away, as is San Gimignano with its sky-scraping towers. Terracotta-colored Siena is a smidge closer at 2 hours and 45 minutes (235km/146 miles), while the closest place of interest is the vineyard-clad hills of the Val d’Orcia with its famous wine towns of Montepulciano and Montalcino . They are 2.5 hours from Rome as is UNESCO-heritage site, Pienza, a perfectly preserved 15th-century Tuscan town that features heavily on most day trip tours.

If you’re envisioning lunch in a picturesque setting as a key part of your Tuscan dream, then opt for an itinerary around Pienza and the Val d’Orcia as this will give you enough time for a little cultural exploration in the morning, a leisurely lunch and then some afternoon wine tasting before returning to Rome.  Walks of Italy has a great itinerary that includes lunch at a family-run winery in Montepulciano.

Rome to Florence by train

If Florence is a must-see on your Tuscan tour, then look out for a mixed train-and-car trip. The high-speed  frecciarossa service from Rome to Florence takes just 1.5 hours, meaning you can be in the city by 9am, in time for coffee and croissant in art nouveau  Caffè Gilli . You’ll then head out into the countryside by car to visit either Siena, San Gimignano or the wine country of Chianti .  Italy on a Budget has a very well-priced tour that manages to cover all of them and includes lunch and a wine tasting.

If you can possibly spare another day for Tuscany, Florence with reward you amply. You’ll then have time to visit the spectacular Duomo , Michelangelo’s David and the Medici’s marble tombs . There’s also nothing better than toasting the sunset over the Arno River in rooftop bars like  SE.STO on Arno . While the evening can be spent sampling wine at the  Antinori palazzo or dining at exciting contemporary restaurants like  Gurdulù . Then you can head into the countryside the next day with Ariana at  KM Zero Tours . A Chianti native, she creates fantastic small group tours to local farms, cheesemakers and vineyards. If the years I’ve spent researching in Italy for Lonely Planet have taught me anything, it’s that taking more time always pays off.

An alternative day trip from Rome

Finally, I’d like to consider whether the main motivation behind your question is that you’d just like to venture outside Rome and see some of the fabled Italian countryside and perhaps you’re not wedded to Tuscany as the destination? If that’s the case, then perhaps you should consider a day tour to the borderlands between Umbria and Lazio (Rome’s wider region). The area has many of the same lovely features – rolling hills, ancient hilltop towns, and miles and miles of vineyards. It’s also much closer to Rome and within an easy 1.5-hour drive. Here you’ll find gorgeous Renaissance Orvieto , medieval Todi and Viterbo , stunning Civita Bagnoregio perched on its volcanic outcrop, and even the sunny shores of Lake Bolsena. Happy planning!

Latest Foreign Office travel advice for France, Spain, Turkey and Italy

T he Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), provides information and guidance about risks of travel to any of 226 nations and territories in a bid to help people make informed decisions and stay safe.

The Government department's updates can include things like security risks, passport and visa requirements, and health warnings, and it is important to be aware of the latest guidance.

Ahead of what is likely to be a very busy year for international travel, we have taken a look at all the latest travel advice for France, Spain, and other destinations that are popular with UK travellers.

While there are no enforced covid requirements in France at the moment, Gov.UK guidance states: "You’re strongly recommended to wear a face mask in health settings. In some areas, people aged 6 and above may need to wear a face mask."

As with all EU countries, your passport must be issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country - so you should check the "date of issue" - and be valid for at least three months after the day you plan to leave (check the "expiry date").

If your passport was issued before 1 October 2018, extra months may have been added to its expiry date.

On arrival in France you may need to show border control staff proof of where you intend to stay, for example a hotel booking, as well as proof of travel insurance, a return or onward ticket, and proof you have enough money for your whole stay.

You can travel to countries in the Schengen area, which France is part of, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa.

You cannot take food items such as meat and dairy to France from the UK, though there are some medical exceptions which include certain amounts of powdered infant milk and infant food. You can find out more about this here.

The FCDO says terrorists are "very likely" to carry out attacks in France and advises UK travellers to be vigilant at all times. It adds that attacks could take place in areas such as shopping centres, entertainment establishments, on public transport, and at places of worship.

Foreign Office advice also warns there can be "frequent industrial action across France", which can lead to delays and disruption especially on public transport. It adds: "If you’re due to travel to or within France, monitor the media, check your operator’s advice and follow the advice of the authorities."

A further warning reads: "Thieves and pickpockets operate on the Paris underground, RER lines and at mainline stations" while people with a British driving licence who plan on driving while in France are reminded: "You may need a UK sticker to drive your car outside the UK.

"These have replaced GB stickers. Check the guidance on displaying number plates if you are driving outside the UK."

There are currently no covid rules for Spain, according to the FCDO, and as with France your passport must be issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country, and be valid for at least three months after the day you plan to leave.

You can travel to countries in the Schengen area, which Spain is part of, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. To stay longer, to work or study, for business travel or for other reasons, you need to meet the Spanish government’s entry requirements.

Border control staff may ask for proof you have enough money for your stay and confirmation of your accommodation - which may be a hotel booking, or a carta de invitation completed by your hosts.

People planning to travel between Spain and Gibraltar are warned over delays due to border checks, with FCDO advice adding: "There is no charge to enter or leave Gibraltar. You should not hand over money to anybody claiming there is a charge."

You cannot take food items such as meat and dairy to Spain from the UK, though there are some medical exceptions which include certain amounts of powdered infant milk and infant food. You can find out more about this here.

The FCDO says terrorists are "likely" to carry out attacks in Spain and advises UK travellers to "stay aware of your surroundings" at all times. Of Spain's "political situation", the government department adds: "Demonstrations, political gatherings or marches can take place with little or no warning, particularly in cities. Follow the advice of police and local authorities.

"While most demonstrations are peaceful, there is a risk of unrest or violence. If you’re in and around areas where demonstrations are taking place, be aware of what is happening around you and move away if there are signs of disorder."

Travellers are also advised to protect their belongings and "be alert to street crime" although "most visits to Spain are trouble-free". Advice states: "Take care of your passports, money and personal belongings" and suggests people keep a photocopy or scanned copy of their passports in a safe place.

When it comes to alcohol, UK travellers are reminded: "You cannot drink alcohol in the street in some areas of Spain. You can be given an on-the-spot fine.

"There are strict controls on drinking and sexual activity in public places, including on beaches."

Local laws limit the sale and availability of alcohol in areas of some resorts on the islands of Mallorca and Ibiza, prohibiting drink promotions such as happy hours, open bars, and off licence sales between 9.30pm and 8am.

Hotels and other establishments are obliged to evict customers who behave dangerously on balconies. Both the customer and the establishment can be fined for such behaviour.

People planning on driving while in Spain are reminded: "You may need a UK sticker to drive your car outside the UK. These have replaced GB stickers. Check the guidance on displaying number plates if you are driving outside the UK."

The FCDO advises against travel within 10km of Turkey's border with Syria, and against all but essential travel to Sirnak and Hakkari province.

If you are visiting Turkey, your passport must be valid for at least 150 days from the date you arrive and have a full blank page for entry and exit stamps. You only need a visa if you plan on staying longer than 90 days in any 180-day period.

The FCDO says terrorists are "very likely" to carry out attacks in Turkey and advises UK travellers to be vigilant at all times. It adds that attacks could take place in areas such as shopping centres, entertainment establishments, on public transport, and at places of worship.

Of the nation's "political situation", it adds: "Occasional demonstrations can occur in cities and may become violent. Police have used tear gas and water cannon to disperse protests.

It also warns that "street robbery and pick-pocketing are common in the major tourist areas of Istanbul", and advises people always make sure their personal items are secure.

The FCDO says that 42 cases of sexual assault were reported to British consular staff in Turkey in 2023, adding: "Most sexual assault cases reported to British consular staff in Turkey have happened during summer holidays in coastal tourist areas.

"Many were committed at night by someone the victim met during the day, including hotel workers. There have also been sexual attacks on minors visiting toilet facilities alone. Be extra vigilant in these situations."

A stray dog warning is listed for Turkey, as packs "congregate and can be aggressive". People are advised to take care and not to approach any dogs.

Guidance adds: "If you’re bitten, get medical advice immediately. Rabies and other animal borne diseases are present in Turkey."

There are no covid requirements for Italy however if you are visiting a hospital intensive care ward or a car home, you must wear a FFP2 mask.

As with travel to all other EU nations, your passport must be issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country, and be valid for at least three months after the day you plan to leave.

You can travel to countries in the Schengen area, which Italy is part of, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. To stay longer, to work or study, for business travel or for other reasons, you need to meet the Italian government’s entry requirements.

Border control staff may ask for proof you have enough money for your stay and confirmation of your accommodation, as well as proof of travel insurance and a return or onward ticket.

You cannot take food items such as meat and dairy to Italy from the UK, though there are some medical exceptions which include certain amounts of powdered infant milk and infant food. You can find out more about this here.

The FCDO says terror attacks in Italy "cannot be ruled out" and advises UK travellers to "remain vigilant at all times." Of Italy's "political situation", the government department adds: "Demonstrations may occur with little or no warning in cities. Avoid any protests, political gatherings, or marches."

People are advised that crime levels are "generally low" but that petty crime such as bag snatching and pickpocketing is more common in big cities such as Rome and Milan.

It adds: "Robberies from parked cars have been reported, in Rome, particularly the Colosseum area, Ostia, Milan and Pisa. Coastal areas and towns have been targeted as well as motorway service stations. Always lock your vehicle, never leave valuables in cars and avoid leaving luggage in cars for any length of time."

The government department also warns travellers that some Italian towns and cities have specific local laws. These may see you fined for actions such as dropping litter, sitting on monument steps, and eating or drinking next to churches or other historic buildings.

Gov.uk advice adds: "It’s also an offence to enter or bathe in public fountains in many towns and cities, including Florence and Rome. A fine of up to 10,000 euros can be imposed for urinating in a public place."

You must also not take any disposable plastic items, such as bags, cups or places, onto the island of Capri. If you are caught doing so you can be fined up to 500 euros.

People should also only use licensed taxi drivers, the FCDO has said, and that these "should be called or taken from an official rank rather than hailed in the street".
