Travel Guide: SAS vs Norwegian. What Short Haul Scandinavian Airline is Best.

On our recent trip to Scandinavia we got a chance to try out both SAS and Norwegian on their short haul service within the region. SAS and Norwegian are the dominant players in the short haul market in this part of Europe. SAS and Norwegian have hubs in CPH, ARN, and OSL and that makes them both a good choice for flying around Scandinavia.

SAS does lots of long haul flying along side their short haul operation. Today I’ll be focusing on SAS’s short haul product. Norwegian previously had a decent size long haul operation, however that was ended before Covid due to financial problems. Norwegian has kept their short haul system running well and that’s what I’ll be comparing to SAS.

Bottom Line: I wouldn’t avoid either SAS or Norwegian for a short haul flight, they are both perfectly acceptable options. Pick the one with a better schedule or price.

I have a full review of a Norwegian 737-800 flight from OSL-ARN here.

I have a full review of an SAS A320neo flight from CPH-ARN here.

SAS vs Norwegian Short Haul Fleets

Sas vs norwegian plane comfort, sas vs norwegian in flight entertainment, sas vs norwegian in flight service, sas vs norwegian route network, sas vs norwegian ticket costs, sas vs norwegian baggage policy.

sas travel guide

SAS primarily uses Airbus A320 series aircraft for their short haul routes. This is primarily the A320Neo but also includes the A320ceo, A321, and A319. SAS does have some other larger planes in their fleet, but those aren’t used on their short haul routes.

sas travel guide

Norwegian exclusively uses Boeing 737 aircraft. This is mostly the 737-800 but they also have a few 737max8 aircraft in rotation with many more on order.

When it comes to the aircraft, I prefer riding on the Airbus, but they are not very different from each other.

SAS and Norwegian both just use narrow body planes in an all economy configuration. I wouldn’t say either of these are uncomfortable, but I do prefer to ride on the SAS A320.

sas travel guide

It’s just a little bid wider than the Norwegian 737s and it means just a little more shoulder width. The SAS planes also have just a touch more leg room and pitch than Norwegian. Both are on the tight side, but the SAS Airbus has more space.

sas travel guide

The SAS Airbus overhead vents are also much better than what you’d find on the Norwegian Boeing. This is very pedantic, but if we’re going to compare SAS vs Norwegian, I figured we’ll go all the way.

So overall, I would say that SAS is a little more comfortable than Norwegian on their short haul product.

Both Norwegian and SAS offer paid Wifi, though on my recent Norwegian flight, the Wifi didn’t work. The two airlines also offer a stream to your device entertainment option.

The one area where SAS has an edge on Norwegian is power in each seat. The SAS A320neo(most common plane) has USB power in every seat where the Norwegian 737-800(most common plane) doesn’t offer power.

sas travel guide

Norwegian has a buy on board program for it’s in-flight snack and drink service. SAS offers free water, coffee, or tea. SAS also offers other drinks and snacks for purchase.

Within Scandinavia, SAS and Norwegian both have very good route networks serving the region. Both airlines have major hubs at CPH, OSL, and ARN. Beyond regional European flights, SAS certainly has the upper hand as they have long haul operations to North America and Asia. Norwegian ended it’s long haul services in 2019.

SAS and Norwegian have both adopted a low cost carrier model for intra-European flights. This means that the tickets are very cheap, but you’ll pay for pretty much everything else. In comparison, there’s very little cost difference between the two airlines.

Being low cost carriers, both SAS and Norwegian have relatively restrictive baggage policies. With the most basic fares, no baggage, apart from a small personal item, is included.

sas travel guide

Norwegian allows you to add an over head bin carry on bag. This is included with their Lowfare+ and Flex ticket options. The total weight of your over head bag and personal under seat bag must be less than 10kg. Though when we traveled with Norwegian, no one checked bags for weight. The Lowfare+ also includes a 23kg checked bag. The Flex ticket adds a second bag, so a total of 2 23kg bags can be checked for free.

sas travel guide

SAS has very similar baggage rules. No overhead carry on bag is included on their cheapest SAS Go Light fare. Only a small under seat personal bag is allowed. The other fares on SAS include a overhead bag. The total weight of the two bags is limited to 8kg. For checked luggage, SAS includes a 23kg checked bag on all fares except for the Go Light. The SAS Plus Pro and SAS Plus Bonus fares get a second 23kg bag.

So on the whole the baggage polices for both SAS and Norwegian are broadly equivalent. Norwegian might have the slight edge as they allow 10kg vs 8kg for carry on weight. Though neither airline checked our bags.

SAS vs Norwegian Final Thoughts

Both SAS and Norwegian are good airlines that serve their local market well. Both provide good service on the relatively short routes for a reasonable price.

I think I like the SAS A320neo more than the Norwegian 737s. They are just a little bit more comfortable and they have better overhead vents along with USB power in each seat. SAS also provides a free coffee, tea, and water service on their short haul flights, Norwegian does not.

The Norwegian luggage policies are slightly more lenient than SAS. It’s only a very small amount, but a 10kg carry on is better than an 8kg carry on so Norwegian would win there. Then again neither airline checked so it really wouldn’t make much of a practical difference.

I think I liked SAS a little more, but would gladly fly with Norwegian again. It all comes down to price and schedule. Pick the cheapest flight that fits your schedule well. We’re talking about flights that are less than 2 hours, either airline will be just fine.

SAS Airlines Carry-on size guide: All you need to know

sas travel guide

Get ready to board your SAS Airlines flight in comfort. Read on to learn everything you need to know about flying on Scandinavian Airlines with carry-on baggage. Here, you will find a detailed guide on SAS Airlines’ carry-on size requirements so you can be prepared before your flight and avoid extra fees .

What is the carry-on policy on SAS Airlines?

All SAS Airlines passengers are allowed to fly with a carry-on. However, the carry-on allowance depends on both your destination and ticket type . For SAS GO Light when flying within Europe and Turkey, there is an extra charge for a single carry-on, while the same fare does not charge for a carry-on when flying within Canada, Asia, and the US.

On the other hand, when you purchase SAS Plus, SAS Business, and SAS Go Pro and Bonus tickets for a flight to the US, Canada, and Asia, you are allowed onboard with 2 carry-ons. Additionally, all these tickets allow passengers to have one under-seat bag.

sas travel guide

What is the SAS Carry-on size and weight limit?

Your carry-on bag needs to be no larger than 55 x 40 x 23 cm (22 x 16 x 9 inches) in order to fit in the overhead compartment above your seat. The carry-on bag’s handles, pockets, and wheels are all included in this measurement. You can verify your carry-on’s dimensions at either of the size check monitors at the airline’s ticketing stations and departure gates if you’re unsure about its size.

Check out this article on maximizing your carry-on bag’s capacity for packing tips and use the Fee Assistant tool on the flight results page to calculate the impact of additional luggage on your travel costs before you purchase a flight ticket.

What is the carry-on liquid policy for SAS?

A man loading and securing his bags in the overhead compartment of the airplane.

SAS liquid policy allows passengers to bring liquids including gels, and aerosols in containers with a maximum capacity of 100ml (3.4 ounces) on SAS flights. These containers must be put inside a transparent, resealable plastic bag with a one-quart maximum capacity. There is a limit of one such bag per traveler, and each one must be provided separately for inspection at the security checkpoint. Check this handy reference article for details about everything you can and can’t bring on a plane .

What extra items can you bring on board?

It is necessary to confirm any desired special baggage prior to departure. You can bring a diaper bag , a child car seat , and a stroller not exceeding 23kg at no extra cost if you’re traveling with an infant . If you’re not sure that your item fits these requirements, try using KAYAK’s Bag Measurement tool .

For an additional fee, owners of small cats and dogs may bring their pet as a carry-on for a fee . The pet must travel in a small pet carrier that fits under the seat in front of you . This counts as your one carry-on item.

In addition, you can bring duty-free bags and airport purchases into the cabin along with your cabin baggage.

SAS carry-on FAQs

SAS normally enforces severe size restrictions for carry-on luggage, defining precise dimensions and weight constraints for in-cabin storage. It is possible that you can be requested to pay an extra fee for the bag if it exceeds the permitted dimensions or weight.

If you intend on bringing a backpack or a carry-on. According to SAS, travelers are often permitted to bring a backpack as a personal item and a carry-on bag to store in the overhead compartment. However, note that the personal item also has size restrictions.

Going off to college or university can be an exciting time of life, with many new experiences to be had and new places to explore.

For those who plan to travel during school — be it for a study abroad program, an alternative spring break, a fun trip with friends or just to head home during school breaks — the cost of flying can be prohibitive. However, a number of airlines offer special deals on student flights to make travel more accessible.

Here is a list of airlines that offer student flight discounts for young people traveling around North America and beyond.

Instead of offering discounts on individual tickets, Air Canada offers a Student Flight Pass for students traveling frequently within the Americas. It also offers an International Student Flight Pass for those planning to travel frequently with more distant destinations.

You can either buy a pass outright or pay it off over nine months (with interest). The pass, coupled with your Aeroplan frequent flyer account number, scores you four to six flight credits (depending on the destination) to use over a specified amount of time, usually 12-15 months. You will have to choose a specific zone in which to fly (like the Western U.S., Alberta or Brazil).

One credit is valid for one one-way flight.

Make sure the pass covers travel to and from your preferred destinations. You will need to plan to fly with Air Canada at least as many times as your pass is good for or the investment won’t be worth it.

» Learn more: The points collector’s guide to Air Canada Aeroplan

You have to be a student in one of the airline’s participating regions (which includes the U.S. and Canada) and traveling out of specific airports to take advantage of Cathay Pacific’s student flight discounts.

Eligible student travelers will:

Get access to exclusive fares to some destinations and select fare categories.

An extra baggage allowance.

Free flight changes for Flex fare classes.

Exclusive rates for Light and Essential classes.

The discount is good for one-way and round-trip flights to specific destinations, plus it can be used to book a seat in economy, economy plus or business class.

Just remember to include your Cathay number on your booking, use the relevant discount code listed online and bring a valid form of student ID when you check in at the airport or you won’t get the discount.

There are limited booking windows for flight discounts for students on Cathay Pacific (for example, in 2024, you must book by April 4 for travel through April 2025 if flying out of the U.S. or Canada).

Before you book, check the website for more details and keep an eye out for future dates.

Air France works a little differently when it comes to cheap flights for students. You’ll still have to prove that you’re a student with a valid student card, proof of enrollment or an admission letter at check-in, but you’ll mostly search for flights on the website as usual — except under “passengers,” make sure to select “student.”

When flight results appear, the student rate, if it’s available, will be in the first column. Prices will vary, but on the upside, the student rate always gets two free checked bags, and you’ll be able to change your flight for no additional fee.

Many eligible trips have to be at least 21 days long; however, there are a few flight options from France to specific destinations that have to be only seven days long.

» Learn more: What to expect from Air France seats and fare classes

Unlike with most airlines, the discount offered by Iberia is open to anyone under 30, even if you’re not a student (with additional benefits for those studying abroad).

If that’s you, check to see if Iberia Joven, the discount program for students, offers flights to where you’re headed. If it does, you may be able to score a 10% discount on certain flights and an extra free checked bag if you’re studying abroad.

Just make sure you book on the Iberia Joven site specifically, and know that not all routes are included and the discount is only for the lowest economy fares.

Lufthansa also offers flight discounts for students who book on the airline website. The discounts are valid only for certain flights from select countries, but in addition to fare savings on travel that qualifies, students get more checked baggage allowances and flexible booking.

To take advantage of these fares, you have to be at least 16 and enrolled in some sort of higher education. You'll have to verify your status as a student on the airline website. Then, when you search for fares, just remember to select “Student” to see any applicable discounts.

If you’re a student flying on Turkish Airlines, whether or not you’re a Turkish citizen, you can get up to a 20% discount on domestic flights within Turkey and 15% on international flights.

Students also enjoy a 40-kilogram baggage allowance (about 88 pounds) on flights that charge by weight and two 23-kilogram (about 50-pound) bags on flights that charge by piece. Students get free one-time flight changes for international flights, plus 25% more miles credited to your Miles&Smiles account when you fly before the end of 2024.

To get the discount, verify that you’re a student in the “Discount Types” section on the “My Personal Information” page in your Miles&Smiles loyalty account. Then just select the “Student” passenger option when searching for and booking flights.

Students flying to Emirates’ 250 destinations can score up to a 10% discount on economy and business class fares, plus an extra 10 kilograms (about 22 pounds) or an extra piece of luggage (except when flying to the U.S. or Canada).

Use code STUDENT in the promotional code box to book, then make sure you bring proof that you’re a student to check in.

This special is available only to students ages 16 to 31, and as of this writing, you have to book by March 31, 2024. Act fast and keep an eye on the airline for future deals if you’re a student planning travel to one of Emirates’ destinations.

» Learn more: How much are Emirates Skywards miles worth?

Students flying on Singapore Airlines can enjoy a 10% discount on Lite, Value or Standard fares in economy class or premium economy class. They also get an extra luggage allowance, which is based on destination, and waived change fees the first time they need to alter their flight.

To enjoy these perks, first join the airline’s KrisFlyer loyalty program . Then you’ll be asked to verify that you’re a student, which you’ll need to do once a year. Then, when it’s time to search for flights, log in and do so on the airline’s dedicated student page. If you are younger than 16, you will not be able to verify your student status online.

SAS offers discounts not just for students, but youth in general, which includes individuals ages 12 to 25. The availability of these discounted fares on any particular flight is limited, and it’s reserved for SAS Go (standard economy) bookings for specific fare classes.

While no student ID is required, travelers will need to prove their age, so make sure to bring along a valid ID. Keep in mind that unaccompanied minors cannot book an SAS Youth Ticket.

There aren’t a lot of extra perks that accompany a Youth Ticket, and SAS doesn’t state how much you can save, but it’s worth searching to find out.

If you’re a student enrolled in higher education ages 18 to 30 and planning travel to any of Qatar Airways’ many destinations, it’s likely worth it to join the airline’s Student Club.

You’ll have to enroll online and share passport and university details, but once you do, you’ll be provided with a unique code to use during booking that will net you a discount.

That code will score you a 10% discount on your first flight, after which you’ll receive a new code for a 15% discount on your second booking and 25% off your third.

Students also get an additional baggage allowance, one complimentary date change for a booked flight and free Super Wi-Fi when you book on the airline website.

You can even fast-track your elite status once you graduate if you fly with Qatar at least once a year. The codes are valid only for Qatar-operated flights.

» Learn more: Qatar Airways — what travelers need to know

If you’re a college student, about to be a college student or — in the case of a few airlines — just qualify as a “youth,” you may be able to score some rich discounts and other benefits from a number of airlines.

Just make sure to take note of any special requirements from your preferred airline, sign up for loyalty programs in advance if necessary and enjoy the savings (plus a bit of extra baggage in many cases).

What's next for SAS 9 and SAS Enterprise Guide?

At SAS Explore 2023, Bryan Harris (SAS CTO) and Susan Owenby (head of the SAS 9 division in R&D) appeared on main stage with a strong message about the future of SAS 9. From my conversations with attendees afterward, it seems clear that this is exactly what many customers have been waiting for.

sas travel guide

  • SAS 9 will be available to our customers as they transition to SAS Viya.
  • SAS is investing in SAS 9 with the creation of the SAS 9 division. The SAS 9 division comprises developers, testers and product managers, all devoted to keeping SAS 9 relevant and its customers productive with their platform.
  • SAS released SAS 9.4 Maintenance 8 (SAS 9.4M8) in early 2023. The team releases SAS 9.4 quarterly security updates and fixes as needed. The next full maintenance release (SAS 9.4M9) is planned for 1H2025 .
  • There will be future releases of SAS 9. The SAS software support policy promises standard support for a release for 5 years from its general-availability date. For SAS 9.4M8, that puts standard support to January 2028. Assuming the planned SAS 9.4M9 sticks to schedule, that update would put standard support into 2030. With more SAS 9 releases on the horizon, support for SAS 9 will move forward beyond that for many years to come.

Building a bridge to SAS Viya

Even with this focus on SAS 9, SAS is not letting up on our attention to SAS Viya. The SAS Viya platform has monthly releases and is where most new innovation takes place. However, the move to SAS Viya from SAS 9 can be a big project, and SAS continues to build new tools and processes to help customers assess and migrate their analytics work to the more modern platform.

As part of this effort, Bryan and Susan announced that SAS Enterprise Guide will soon be able to connect to a SAS Viya 4 environment . (And, as of March 2024, this is now available as SAS Enterprise Guide 8.4 !) This is a change from previous direction, and is a direct result of customer feedback. Up until now, SAS Enterprise Guide was tethered to SAS 9 only, because SAS Studio (with its many enhancements) has been the deluxe coding interface for SAS Viya. SAS Studio is still the best environment to leverage SAS Viya features, but can use SAS Enterprise Guide as a bridge to leverage your existing projects and code workflows as you adopt SAS Viya.

SAS programmers are spoiled for choice

In addition to these SAS 9 announcements, SAS Explore featured the premier of SAS Viya Workbench , a light-weight cloud-native coding environment for developers using SAS, Python, and eventually R. These are all native code experiences that leverage the SAS Viya platform with your favorite programming language. SAS Viya Workbench allows you to use VS Code, Jupyter Notebooks, and even SAS Enterprise Guide for your coding experience. Read more about these technology announcements in this news release .

And if you love VS Code (I do), you can use the SAS extension for VS Code right now to manage and view your SAS programs, while connecting to SAS Viya or SAS 9 environments to run programs and view results.

sas travel guide

Hi Chris. Good news. We, the fans of SAS Enterprise Guide will be able to continue taking advantage of its benefits. Hooray!!!

That's interesting. SAS 9.4 is still stuck in the 1990s needing to run in "compatibility mode" for Windows 8, Microsoft's biggest screw-up since ever. Opening files in SAS 9.4 feels like Windows 3.1, as does the toolbar and menu with all it's seriously obsolete "functions". Well, hello SAS, it's not the 1990s any longer. Get out of hibernation and update SAS, so you might be able to get some of the customers back that you lost during the past 25+ years due to negligence. Gone are the days when Universities subscribed to SAS when it was still state-of-the-art.

Chris Hemedinger

Hi Frank - thanks for the comment. It's true that the SAS display manager interface (full SAS install on Windows) has not changed much in recent years. SAS has instead created modern interfaces for SAS users in SAS Enterprise Guide, SAS Studio within SAS Viya, and also brought the coding experience to VS Code -- which many new programmers prefer. Still, SAS 9.4 (base interface) has lots of users who depend on it, and it continues to get updates to keep it compatible with modern operating systems on Windows and Linux.

Hi Chris, this is very helpful. I tried to get to the announcements but couldn't figure out how to get there. I signed up and got to the SAS Explore on-demand page at https://www.sas.com/en_us/offers/23q3/explore-ondemand/watch-now.html#formsuccess but I don't see where to find the announcements about SAS 9 that you described. Thanks!

Hi Chris, We enjoy using SAS EG but we are looking forward to move to SAS Viya. So, this is really good news that SAS EG will soon be able to connect to a SAS Viya 4 environment. Do you have any idea about the actual release date? I expect this should be compatible with old EG project (such as egp in version 7.1). Is my expectation too high?

Hi Jessica, the current release timeline is end of Q12024. The release will be called SAS Enterprise Guide 8.4, and it will be the same features/functions that exist today except for the addition of being able to connect to SAS Viya (as well as continued support for SAS 9 environments). You can read your EG projects from earlier versions, but once converted to a later release of EG the projects cannot be used in the earlier versions. As always, we recommend keeping backup versions if you have a mixed environment of different EG versions.

Thanks! Any idea about the actual release date? Any good news?

The release date for a SAS Enterprise Guide that connects to SAS Viya 4 is still Q12024, as far as I know.

The "What’s New in SAS 9.4 Guide to Software Updates" mentions SAS terminated support for Geocode July 2023. What does this mean exactly? I am using PROC GEOCODE today for street-level geocoding using US Census shapefiles on SAS 9.4M8, and it seems to be working. It's after July, obviously.

I think you are referring to the note relating to data packs for DataFlux . It does not apply to the PROC GEOCODE feature that lives in Base SAS.

Our Inca Trail Tour was absolutely incredible and exceeded all expectations! This was largely due to our guide Henrry who is so knowledgeable about the landscape, history, astronomy and spirituality of the region - he also has a really fun attitude & energy. The chef was wonderful and cooked us delicious food, it was lovely to try some peruvian classics while also accommodating our dietary requirements. All of the team at SAS were so welcoming and made our trek so special and memorable, we can’t thank you enough!!

Incredible experience and will never forget! Dayvis is the best tour guide. He is super nice, very knowledgeable and very accommodating! The whole SAS trek team is incredible and highly will recommend to all my family and friends! It was my birthday and they even baked me a cake with what they had, it meant so much to me! Appreciated all the cooks, porters and especially our guide Dayvis. We are so thankful for SAS !!

Best Salkantay Tour Company!! SAS went above and beyond in every way for our 5 day salkantay trail! Best trip ever! Highly recommend this company for the best service and experience. Roger, our tour guide made every moment so special full of knowledge sharing, laughter, and positivity. He brought us on special add on hikes and excursions that were incredible. Oscar, our chef, prepared literal feasts for every meal that were all delicious, unique, and nourishing. Other tour groups were salivating when they saw the food we were served. Elias, quickly became our friend with morning tent wake-ups with cocoa tea, his huge smile, and incredible service for camping and meal time. All of the staff was incredible and made our experience feel like “glamping” in the most beautiful Peruvian Andes scenery. Jonathan, made planning this trip so easy with quick responses and extreme flexibility when we had to reschedule to 2022 after the 2020 surprise pandemic interrupted plans. It should also be noted that during our trip there were strikes going on that led to blockades around Cusco, making it difficult to get to the trailhead on day 1. However, our SAS team was the only tour company that found a way for us to begin the trip on time with commitment and creativity. We are so thankful for SAS!!

Amazing 4d/3n classic Inca trail.! I just finished hiking the 4d/3n classic Inca trail with SAS and would absolutely recommend this company. Communication was great from start to finish - even before my friend and I booked the tour, Jonathan was extremely responsive and helpful in answering all of our questions. On the hike, our tour guide Deyviss was extremely knowledgeable about the history and culture of the Inca empire. He was also very accommodating for the varying fitness levels in our group, even helping me carry my backpack when I got really bad altitude sickness on the second day. Elias, the porter team, and the chef were also phenomenal, running ahead of us to ensure everything ran on schedule. Overall, this was an amazing experience and I really enjoyed hiking with Deyviss and team!

Sacred Valley plus Short Inca Trail.! Just finished the Sacred Valley plus Short Inca Trail 3 Days/ 2 Nights Tour. The tour was incredible and more than covered everything in the prospective. But what really made the trip was the office staff and the guide. The personal attention from the Cusco office staff Jonathan as he setup the trip just as we requested including getting tickets to Huayna Piccho Mountain at the time we wanted and arranging for airport transport and Covid testing. I had a few special needs due to age and allergies, and he made sure that they were addressed. Our guide for the 3 days, Danny Ramirez, was both an expert guide with a deep knowledge of Inca and Spanish culture as well as the local flora and fauna, but also a personal coach, encouraging me forward yet giving me space to enjoy some of the most spectacular scenery on the planet. It was a real privilege for me and my family to spend 3 days with him. Thank you.

Program Itinerary

Day 1: cusco - ollanta - km 82 piskacucho - ayapata 1st camping..

Early pick-up from your hotel will begin around 5:00 am. We will meet at our departure point, Plaza Regocijo, by 5:30 to board our private transportation. Make sure you carry your original passport or ISIC card. Our journey from Cusco to Piskacucho takes approximately 3 hours, with many beautiful views of the Sacred Valley, the Urubamba River, Andean towns, and the Inca town of Ollantaytambo. Along the way, we will stop to stretch our legs, use the bathroom, and enjoy breakfast, before continuing on to Piscacucho (2,680 m / 8,790 ft). There we will meet our camp crew and the porters who will carry our belongings during our 35-mile hike. Passports in hand, we clear the official Inca Trail check point, cross a suspension footbridge across the Urubamba River, and begin our trek with a gentle climb. We have three hours on relatively level terrain as we follow the course of the river, rewarded with superb views of Mount Veronica (5,750 m). The easy walk passes through a forest of giant cactus and native bushes. At Miskay we take the trail to the left, ascending gradually to Willkaraccay high above the mouth of the Cusichaca River and across from the Inca town of Llactapata (Terrace Town). Our vantage point is from a flat bluff above the extensive site, which was built as a fort because it commands the entrance to the Cusichaca Valley. The terracing system was used during Inca times for growing maize, a prestige crop that needed irrigation in the dry highlands. After a short rest, we continue another 15 minutes down to our lunch site at Tayaroc. Our path is adorned with native flowers and bromeliads growing in the boulders along the left side, and by majestic views of the mountains in both valleys. Walking times are always approximate, depending on weather conditions, group ability and other factors. After lunch, another 3-4 hours will bring us to the village of Wayllabamba (3,000 m / 9,840 ft), followed by an uphill climb through woods and along a stream to our first camp at Ayapata (3,300 m / 10,824 ft). You will be rewarded with Te Macho and a buffet dinner. Buenas Noches!!! --- Meals: BLD, Accommodation: Camping, Maximum Altitude: 3,300 m/10,824 ft, Minimum Altitude: 2,680 m/8,790 ft, Distance Travelled: 12 km approx Approximate Walking Time: 6-7 hours / Ascent up: 620 m

Day 2: Ayapata, Llulluchayoq, Dead woman`s pass, Pacaymayo, Runkuracay, Sayacmarka, Chakicocha.

After breakfast, we depart from the Ayapata camp around 7:00 am. This is our longest day, but one rewarded with spectacular views down several valleys and up to the surrounding snow-covered peaks. We will put in a 5-hour hike to reach our lunch camp in the Pacaymayo Valley, then another 3-4 hours to our night camp at Chakicocha. We begin with a 900-m ascent up to the Warmiwanusca (Dead Womans) Pass at 4,200 m/13,776 ft. Along the way, we ascend steeply uphill through the Corralpunku Valley to the Llulluchayoc Zone, where you can see several species of birds. With luck we will see hummingbirds, falcons and black-chested buzzard eagles. We will soon enter a beautiful cloud forest, or polylepis woodland, and the treeless grasslands of the puna. From this point, you can see the highest pass ahead. The path climbs for two more hours along a large number of steps, some of them newly laid to protect the mountain from erosion. You can walk at your own pace, stopping to catch your breath whenever you like. This last hard climb brings us to Dead Woman's Pass, the first of two that we will cross today. Once the full group reaches this pass, we take a rest break before beginning a steep descent into the Pacaymayo Valley on the other side. You will find that your energy returns as we proceed along this downhill segment toward a generous lunch and rest. In the afternoon we begin a second ascent, this time to the ruins at Runcuracay, located a bit below the Runcuracay Pass (3,950 m / 12,956 ft). From the pass, in clear weather, you can look back to the Dead Woman's Pass and forward to a breath-taking sweep of snow-capped peaks. These include the 6,000-m Pumasillo (Pumas Claw) massif. From here, most of the trail is downhill or gently undulating until we reach the impressive ruins at Sayacmarca. After some exploration, another 20 minutes bring us to Chakicocha (3,400 m / 11,000 ft). This will be our coldest night on the trail, at around +3 degrees C in December and -4 C in June. Teatime and Buffet Dinner. --- Meals: BLD, Accommodation: camping, Maximum Altitude: 4,200 m/13,776 ft, Minimum Altitude: 3,000 m/9,840 ft, Distance Travelled: 16 km approx, Approximate Walking Time: 7-8 hours / Ascent up: 900 m

Day 3: Chakicocha, Aobamba Valley, Phuyupatamarka, Intipata, Winaywayna, (Aguas Calientes -optional)

At sunrise, you will catch sight of Sayacmarca back along the trail, perched on the side of one of the many mountains that surround our campsite. Today´s hike is exceptionally beautiful because we will pass the ruins of Phuyupatamarca, Winaywayna, and Intipata, and enjoy dramatic vistas of the Aobamba Valley. This stretch of the trail is of well-kept paved stone, still in great condition after hundreds of years. Your lungs will appreciate the fact that today´s hike is much more down than up, and significantly shorter than yesterday´s.  In getting to Phuyupatamarca (the Town of the Clouds), we will pass through the first of two short, natural tunnels in the mountains. After visiting this site, we will descend about 2,000 stone steps to Winaywayna. If you have not had any knee problems up to this point, you may after this descent. If you have had prior knee injuries, we recommend the use of trekking poles, and perhaps an extra porter, to relieve some of the stress on your joints.  Around mid-day, we will arrive at the site of Winaywayna the last of the remarkable ruins en route, which we will explore and have a guided visit (2,700 m / 8,856 ft). After we will visit the adjacent site of Intipata with its dramatic terraces on the left side of the road.  After visiting the complex of Wiñaywayna we have our lunch and time for a rest before we continue with our last section of our trek for about 1.5 hours toward the Sun´s Gate Inti Punku, natural mirador of Machupicchu here you can make really nice pictures and contemplate the beauty of this impressive wonder. From Inti Punku,- a final easy 40-minute hike will bring us to the entrance to Machu Picchu itself. The trail ends at a series of terraces, which present classic views of the overall city. We will continue on to explore the site, with explanations provided by your guide. Now in front of Machupicchu you will have time to appreciate this marvelous and magical place from the top levels near farming terrains to have spectacular views, after we enjoy enough time we start to walk down for 10 minutes toward Machupicchu´s main gate to board a bus to Aguas Calientes town, where staff of Viajeros Hotel are waiting for us.  After settle in our private rooms, your guide will take you to the natural hot springs to relax and indulge your muscles then return for our dinner at the Hotel. OR our 2nd option is if you don`t want to end in Aguas Calientes town, to get off the bus at Puente Ruinas camp for our 3rd Night in camping in Puente Ruinas near to the river OR our 3rd option is to stay at Wiñaywayna camping for the 3rd night (2 hours before Machu Picchu) and walk this short leg on the morning on Day 4th. and arrive to Machu Picchu by 08:00 am and spend the full morning with your group and have a guided tour. * (For those people interested in climb to WAYNA PICCHU mountain you need to book in advance and ask to purchase a new ticket USD$ 85.00 per person and this will be for the 2nd turn at 10.00 am after your guided tour at Machu Picchu). • What is a University student card? How can I use it to get a discount?  University student cards with a valid expiration date marked stands and it is accepted. (Only admitted until 26 years old). Please send us a copy in a scanned email at the time of your booking, otherwise, it is impossible to get a student permit.  The discount that is offered isn’t a SAS Travel discount but is actually offered by the INC and SAS Travel passes the discount on to you. For that reason, it absolutely necessary that we have a scan of your card “in hand” when we go to purchase your permits. If you didn’t send us a copy of it along with the initial booking, then make sure to note on the registration form that you have one and will send the scan as soon as possible so that we know to try and wait before we purchase the permit.
  • Can I pay for the entire tour up front?  Usually, we require to pay a booking deposit of $300 pp plus 5%. The prices of the tours are for cash payment.  You can withdraw US$ out of the ATMs or banks in Cusco. If you would like to pay in full for your tour up front you can pay in our website with your reservation code adding the 5% extra card fee.
  • I have forgotten how to pay for my reservation so I can confirm.  How can I pay online?     It is very important that you pay an online deposit for your reservation immediately as permits could run out if you do not do so immediately.  You normally just follow the instructions at the time but if you have let some time lapse then please enter this site to make your deposit of $300 per person plus 5%  or pay your remaining final balance. Please use the reservation code. (Pay with Visa, Master Card. OR pay through PayPal on our website. Click on How to Pay:
  • Arrive in Cusco and check-in at the Cusco SAS Travel office.-  We assume most people try to arrive in Cusco 2-3 days before the trek to allow adequate time for acclimatization and a buffer in case of transport delays.  Once you have settled in and rested you must come to the Cusco office to view and reconfirm the information we have pertinent to your trek, personal requirements and sign the conditions (even if you have already paid in full.) There are occasions when local holidays or unrest may require last-minute changes to departure times or some additional information and so we have a short briefing at 7:00 pm the night before your trek when you meet your guide and other group members.
  • Where can I store my luggage while I am trekking?  Most hotels and hostels in town offer a storage service in Cusco, for your tour you must only bring things you really will need and leave the rest of your belongings in Cusco. SAS Travel offers free luggage storage for all of our hikers at Hotel Marqueses (Calle Garcilaso  265), located near SAS Travel office. You can then pick up your bags up from the storage at any time after you return from your trek (the hotel is open 24 hours). or even better if you stay in this lovely colonial house.

Your guides will provide the procedure`s details of pick up times at the -briefing session the night before of you trek depart.
  • What should I pack?  See on the page. What to Bring on our trek page.
  • I don`t have a good sleeping bag.  Can I rent one?  YES, you can just organize it at the time of booking.  Down sleeping bag minus 8º Celcius US $ 25.00, 45 Lts Backpack US$ 20.00,  A pair of trekking poles US$ 20.00
  • Personal porter for 8 Kg US$ 80.00 (Half shared porter) or hire a shared personal porter for 6 Kg for $ 60 Dollars for the entire trek.
  • I don`t have a sleeping mattress.  Do I need one?  We include in the cost of the tour the loan of a sleeping mat for the duration of the trek. This is a fairly thick bulky mat that weighs 1 kg and we still say if you are traveling with a thermal-rest or technologically advanced type of sleep mat then definitely bring that instead. Also you can hire a thermal-rest mattress for extra $20 for the trip.
  • How much does the sleeping mat and sleeping bag weigh?  Sleep foam pad mattress weight = 1 kg and Sleeping bag weight = 2-5 kg. Total 3.5 Kg
  • I am on my own, will I have someone to share a tent with? Yes, another person of the same sex or if you prefer you can pay a single supplement for a tent just for you. This is US$ 70 (For the entire trek -please note that is for a single tent and an extra porter who will carry a single tent.)
  • Will I need any extra money? YES, so that you can take part in options such as bottled water, drinks on 1st and 3rd night camping, a hot shower on the 1st night (15 soles), the natural hot springs in Aguas Calientes (15 soles),  tips for your trekking staff -guides, cooks and porters, drinks, snacks in Machu Picchu and drinks at lunchtime at Aguas Calientes, etc.  You should take at least 350 -400 Nuevos Soles as emergency money that hopefully you will return to Cusco with!  Also, for the passengers that are concerned about health, it may be prudent on your part to keep in mind that a train ride from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes costs approx US$75 pp (in case you need to leave the trail early, in this rare case a 2nd guide or assistant will help you to take you a lower level and help you to get a train to Aguas Calientes town where we will arrange accommodation and meals until you meet your group, have a tour at Machu Picchu and return by train to Cusco.)
  • Do the guides speak English?  SAS Travel has high standards for our guides. All of our top guides must be educated in the field of tourism, most of them obtained a University degree, first aid assistance and completely fluent in English. Our guides are also one of the most popular aspects of our tours as some of them are historians and archaeologists and are passionate to transmit Incas History.
  • How many people will be in my group?  We require 6 people minimum for our treks, indicated dates on web availability are open groups in which you are welcome to join, Average 10-12 . We can have up to 8 trekkers with one guide and from 9 -16 trekkers we have 2 licensed trekking guides. During low season the groups are more likely to be small and during high season the groups will likely be full. The Park office has a rule in place that limits the number of passengers per 2 guides to 16 persons. If we are getting a lot of requests for a date and there are still a good number of permits available, we can easily open up a second group for the same date.
  • Should I hire an extra porter?  If you have not trekked in altitude before (3,000 meters to 4,215 meters / 9,842.52 feet to 13,828.74 feet) we highly would suggest you organize an extra porter, (70% of travelers hire an extra porter). If you would like to have a porter carry your things is $80.00 for the entire hike for 8 kilos, OR hire a 6 Kg personal porter for US$ 60.00 for the entire trek (then you only need to carry a small daypack with water, camera, snacks and rain gear in case). SAS Travel provides a duffle porter bag at the briefing the night before your hike -please return this bag after your tour. You should bring only what you absolutely need on the hike and store the rest of your belongings in Cusco (in your hotel or Hotel Marqueses -free luggage storage). Unless you have hired an extra porter, you will need to carry your own backpack, sleeping bag, sleeping mattress, clothings, personal staff and water for the day (boiled water is provided from Day 2 at lunchtime -please note that locals sell bottled water and other drinks at 1st and 2nd camp as a way to get some incomes for their families so we recommend you to buy from them to help their families). If you hire a personal porter, bring a small comfortable backpack with a good back support to carry your personal staff such items as your camera, water bottle, snacks (energy bars, dried fruits, sweets, etc) sunscreen, sun-glasses, a fleece or something warm and a rain poncho (during the rainy season or cloudy days) porters do not walk alongside you, your bags and belongings will be at campsite at afternoon. (Please after the hike return our blue duffle bag to your guide or into our office in Cusco).
  • Please note that there are fines and notifications against our company if you give excess weight to your hired porter, so try to under-pack rather than over-pack  -if your bag overweight at the check-in point, items will have to be removed to reduce the weight. If you are considering carrying all your belongings (mat, sleeping bag, clothes and personal items) we suggest bringing a bigger comfortable backpack -only if you are an experienced trekker, experience hiking on the mountain and top physical conditions.
  • B. ON THE TREK.-
  • I am not really an experienced trekker? What if I can’t keep up? How difficult is the Inca Trail?  1st recommendation is to hire a personal porter for 8 Kg, intensify your walks and hikes in a way of training at home, bring or hire trekking poles. Only in extremely rare circumstances does a passenger need to come back early. You just need to remember that you are able to go at a speed that is comfortable for you. Take your time, pace yourself, and enjoy. (One of the guides will always accompany the slow participants in the group help and assist you.
  • The Inca Trail is considered a moderate trek, it is a little difficult on the 2nd day when you reach the 4,200 meters masl. It's not a technical hike but there are a lot of Inca stairs to walk up and down, and the altitude may affect some individuals. The air is very thin which makes it difficult to breathe.  We recommend strongly to hire a personal porter, use trekking poles...enjoy, relax and rest.
  • Are Trekking poles really necessary?  For this trek more than any of the treks, we DO recommend the use of trekking poles, especially for those passengers with known knee problems. There are multiple times during the trek that a Trekking pole is handy, be it ascending a mountain or walking down immense sets of Inca stairs. It will help with your balance, security in irregular bleachers and reduce the impact on your knees.  You can purchase rubber tips for metal tips.
  • How long will I be walking every day? How long is the trail?  The total distance is 46 Km/ 28 Miles. This is an approximate breakdown according to our regular campsites: Pickups, Departure points?  Pick up from your hotels from 05:30 am. Meeting departure point at Hotel MARQUESES at 05:45 am.  (Depart from Cusco at 05:45 am).  From Cusco 3 Hrs Drive to Km 82, start of the hike.
  • Day 1:  3-4 hours drive to Km 82. Walk from Km 82 -2600m to Hatun-Chaka 1st Camp -3000m (12 Km to walk  6-7 hours)- 400m to climb.
  • Day 2: Hatun-Chaka  Pacaymayo 2nd Camp -3600m.(Highest point 4,200m)16 km. 8 hours 1,200 m to climb.
  • Day 3: Pacaymayo to Wiñay-Wayna 3rd Camp 2,700m. (12 km to walk. 5-6 hours).  200 m to climb.
  • Day 4: Wiñay-Wayna to Machu Picchu -2400m. (6 Km to walk. 3 hours walk) 200 m to climb.
  • Day 4th wake up around 4.00 am, 2-3 hour to Inti-punku Sun`s Gate, MachuPicchu. The entire trail is about 46 kilometers (27 miles) long from start to finish. For hikers interested in climbing to Huayna Picchu Mt (takes 2 hours) you must reserve and pay in advance so we can purchase your passes and it is after your group tour by 11.00 am.
  • Is Altitude Sickness common?   And how high is the Inca Trail?  It's impossible to predict who will be affected by altitude. Your ability to adapt to high altitude is determined by your genetic makeup and has little to do with fitness or health. Most people will have no problems as long as they take the time to acclimatize properly. A full day spent in Cusco (3,399m), take it easy and drink plenty of water is enough for some people but if you can arrange to have minimum 2-3 days drink cups of Coca tea, eat light, no alcohol, in case of any travel disruptions as well then this is what we recommend as there is also so much to do here!.  The highest point you will reach while hiking the Inca Trail is 4200m/13818 ft. on the 2nd Day.
  • What if I am unable to finish the trail?  In the scenario that you are unable to finish the trek due to health issues, SAS Travel will do everything in its power to get you to the nearest civilization and get help or transportation to help. If the issue is respiratory or due to altitude, we do carry at least one tank of oxygen on a trek that you will have access to. In extreme cases, a helicopter picks up can be arranged at your own expense. (Travel Insurance reference is required.) There are no refunds in the situation that you are unable to finish though.  Generally if due to altitude sickness people can`t make it over the pass on the 2nd day they come back to Ollantaytambo accompanied by a porter if just mild (or guide if serious) and if they recover from altitude sickness they stay the night here in Ollantaytambo and then take the train to Aguas Calientes the next day ( Day 3) and we look after them in Hostal Viajeros and then they rejoin their group in Machu Picchu early on Day 4 and continue the tour as normal.  The additional costs for this such as train ticket and accommodation is payable by the passenger and usually is between $60-100 total.
  • Can SAS Travel accommodate my dietary needs?  What kind of food will there be?
  • Not to worry, SAS Travel is able to accommodate many types of dietary needs upon request at the time of booking. If you are a vegetarian, or cannot eat gluten or have allergies to certain foods, it will not be a problem. The meals of our chefs are one of the most popular parts of our tours too, and the quality will not be reduced when accommodating your dietary needs. The meals are served buffet style and you are able to choose what you would like to eat. Your guides will let you know what time the meals will be served.  Our cooks prepare excellent high-energy meals appropriate for a trek of this nature. The menu usually includes quinua, cereals and vegetable soups, Beaf Lomo Saltado with rice, chicken casserole, fresh fruit and vegetables and a variety of oatmeal, eggs and other breakfast foods as scramble egg, quinua panqueques.
  • Will I need to bring water? We recommend that you purchase a 2 liters bottle of water to take with you on the first day. On 2nd you can buy water from locals because they provided their campsite and bathroom, they offer hot shower for 15 Soles, we will boil water when is possible so you can refill the same bottle, not recommended to drink water directly from streams or rivers even using water purification -most people get sick not for the altitude rather by drinking not good water. You will be able to buy bottled water, drinks (Gatorate, Cocacola, beers, etc) along the way on Day 1 and Day 2, then again on the afternoon of Day 3, and of course at Machu Picchu (bring small bills in Soles).
  • Are there bathrooms along the way? Along the trail, there are several sites with toilets with running water. Bring a roll of toilet paper. As far as other trash goes, please carry your own trash to each campsite where the porters will pack it up and take it out. Our camping team will install a toilet tent for our group. Leave no trace! Please do not litter.
  • Is it OK to bring toddlers on the trail? If you are thinking of bringing any small children with you, we highly recommend arranging a private tour with us instead of going on a group service departure. That way, you can get the extra attention that you will require from the guide. It should be remembered that it is likely you will have a difficult time as it is, so if you have never done higher altitude trekking with your child before, you’ll want to carefully consider your enjoyment and the enjoyment of the child. Also, it should be kept in mind that the emergency rescue services while on the trek are extremely limited.
  • Is there a chance that my trek will be canceled?  There is very little possibility of a cancellation of a trek by the INC (Park Office) even under extreme weather circumstances or even in case of a strike, there will be no cancellation.  The Park office or SAS Travel cannot change the date of a trek if there is a general strike. We do everything possible to ensure you get to the trailhead to start the trek for the permit date and this means that we must have correct contact details as about 4-5 times a year there is a general strike. This means no land transport is allowed to travel and so the night before the trek /strike date we have to gather everyone together and drive to the trailhead area to camp the night before so we make sure that the trek goes ahead.  In the case that a passenger decides to cancel the tour for whatever reason, you will just have to pay US$75 more and we can put you on a train to Aguas Calientes. That way you are still able to use the Machu Picchu entrance join your group for a tour and return train ticket at least.
  • Is the trail still good during the rainy season? Is it safe?  The trail is perfectly safe during the rainy season. Some people actually like to go during the rainy season because there are fewer tourists. If you are one who doesn’t mind the rain, then we say ‘Go for it!’ You will just have to bring good rain gear and waterproof boots.
  • What kind of weather can I expect on the trek? Temperatures?  During the “rainy season” (1 Dec - 1 May), you could have some rain any day but you can expect that it could rain every day in Feb and could be heavy! Often in Dec and Jan, you may just get some light continual showers or it could be fine and then a heavy afternoon downpour but in truth, you could also have fine days.  At the same time, it will also be noticeably warmer at night. The day times will get up to about 25 degrees Celsius, the low will be about 2 degrees Celsius.  On the other hand, during the “dry season” (June – Nov) the daytimes will seem strikingly like springtime, with bright and sunny skies, but it will be much colder at night. During the daytime, you can expect it to be somewhere in the range of 20 to 30 degrees Celsius and at night it will be as low as 0 to -5 degrees Celsius. It is always best to dress in layers during any time of year, really. As you hike, put them on when you feel cold or shed them and put it in your day pack when you get hot.
  • How many trekkers and trek crew are in a typical group?  For a group of max 16 trekkers, our typical trekking staff comprise of:  01 guide, 01 assistant guide, 01 cook, 01 assistant cook, 01 general assistant in charge of setting up and organization of safe campsites and 18 porters or carriers.  If the group is 8 or less then just 1 guide, 01 cook, 01 general assistant in charge of setting up and organization of safe campsites and 12 porters or carriers.
  • What is the standard procedure when it comes to tips? Tips for the above-mentioned trekking staff are not included in the price of the trek. Tips are optional  not mandatory. Generally, tips are distributed amongst the trekking staff (except the guide and the assistant guide ) on the third night of the trek at Wiñaywayna camp after the evening meal since these trekking staff will not accompany the group to Machupicchu.
  • Tips for the Cook, Assistant cook, Coordinator & Porters: On the third night at dinner time, someone from the group is usually elected to collect the tips. Please remember to take small bills We recommend that the cook should receive about 50% more than the other trekking staff. The money should be paid directly to each individual or representative of porters rather than given to the guide or cook. Deciding how much to tip is always a difficult and sometimes uncomfortable decision. SAS Travel pays our trek staff fairly and treat them with respect and try to provide good working conditions. We think that a tip should not be used to subsidize a poor wage but should be a way to show the staff that you have enjoyed the trek and appreciated the services that they have provided. The tip should, therefore, be optional and not mandatory. However, if you have enjoyed the service, we recommend that each person in the group contributes between (US$ 25-35 ) to a porters tips “pot” which is then distributed amongst the cook, assistant cook, general assistant and porters. This should ensure that each porter will receive a tip of about US$ 20-25 and the cook around US$ 45-50. Obviously, if you want to tip more please do so. Tips for the Assistant Guide: The assistant guide will accompany the group to Machupicchu and Aguas Calientes, he is in charge of getting the passes for Wayna Picchu climbing. We, therefore, recommend that you tip the assistant guide at lunchtime on the fourth day in Aguas Calientes at lunchtime in Hotel Viajeros. We suggest that each person in the group tips the assistant guide between (US$10-12)  Again, tips are optional, not mandatory and dependent on the level of service provided. Obviously, if you want to pay more please do so.
  • Tips for the Guide: The guide will accompany the group throughout the tour including Machupicchu. We recommend that you tip the guide after the tour in Machupicchu at the time of lunch at Hotel Viajeros in Aguas Calientes  We suggest that each person in the group tips the main guide between (US$12 -15)  Again, tips are optional, not mandatory and dependent on the level of service provided. Obviously, if you want to pay more please do so.
  • SUMMARY:  Like in most American countries, tipping is normal practice. If you have enjoyed the service provided by the trekking team we would recommend bringing between (US$ 45-50 ) to covers tips for the trekking staff (porters, cook and guides). However, if you think that you have received poor service you are under no obligation to pay a tip. The trekking team will soon get the message. Please pay tips in cash and do not pay in kind such as in beers, alcohol drinks etc. We have tried to be as clear as possible about tipping but we understand that this is a complicated issue when many different cultures and lifestyles come together.  (The procedure and amounts listed above have been written in conjunction with our guides and trekking staff. We accept that not all of our clients will be in agreement with this information. It is important that you tip the amount that you feel comfortable with. Please try not to let the procedure stress you or cause anyone to feel badly towards other members of the group who wish to pay less than the recommended amount or decide not to pay a tip at all). Will I be able to witness the sunrise at Machu Picchu?  In truth, it is not a typical sunrise. As long as you don´t have too much mist or low cloud then you see the first light illuminating Machu Picchu. It is after dawn though as the sun must rise up over the high mountains surrounding Machu Picchu.
  • How long am I able to stay at Machu Picchu? How I will I get down to Aguas Calientes?
  • You will have a guided tour of the ruins that lasts approximately 2-3 hours, after which time you will have 2-3 hours more to spend on your own. You can climb Huayna Picchu att 11:00 am (reservation and new pay required $85 pp) or just explore. After the guided portion, your guide will give you a bus ticket for the transfer down to Aguas Calientes. You can take the bus anytime you like. We will be serving a buffet lunch in Aguas Calientes town at Hotel Viajeros starting at 1.45 pm so that is something to keep in mind. If you choose to skip lunch, then you just need to be down in time for your train ride at 14:30 pm at the latest. Train leave at 14:55 pm  /  2nd train at 16:22pm
  • What time will I be back in Cusco? You generally, arrive back to Cusco around 7.30 pm -8:00 pm. 4Day/4Night Inca Trail version will be returning by 13:00 Hrs.
  • Can you explain the train service a little more?? Many of our travelers request a later train to climb Wayna Picchu or to visit the natural hot baths (for which the town Aguas Calientes is named). We therefore generally reserve a late afternoon train around  14:55 pm or - 16:22 pm for our travelers. Occasionally it is direct to Cusco, but otherwise, the service is to Ollantaytambo with a private bus transfer onwards to Cusco. Often passengers decide to stay a further night in Aguas Calientes instead of returning on the 4th night. This is fine, and we can coordinate your accommodation, but any changes you would like to make with train tickets must be made in person with Peru Rail in Aguas Calientes with proof of identity (i.e. your original passport). They will charge a fee for change of dates and coach options will be according to availability.
  • Where this tour start.- All our tours as Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu hikes 4Day/3Night, 4Day/4Night or 5Day/4Night, short 2 Day/1Night Inca Trail, alternatives hikes to Salkantay, Lares, HuchuyQosqo, Choquequirao, Auzangate, tours by train to Machupicchu, Jungle trips to Manu Park, trips to Puerto Maldonado start from Cusco, located at 3,400 meters in the southwest mountains region of Peru. Cusco (the center of the Inca civilization) is the oldest Inka´s ancient capital called Tawantinsuyo, now it is a beautiful and impressive city in Peru with many Inca temples around blended with the Spanish heritage and rich architectural history and Art which from a long time ago was named as the Rome of America. Cusco is still not a big city compared Lima or Arequipa, quite safe, a 10 minutes ride from the airport and you are at the center of Cusco, more than 20 churches, monasteries, and Plazas and most of the travelers found this city very beautiful, with many good restaurants and shops where staff speak English, most people here speak Spanish and Quichua the Inka´s language, official taxis for less than $1.5 per service (3-4 Soles)... then after your great days in Cusco and around you can continue visiting Manu National Park, Jungle trips to Puerto Maldonado, Colca Canyon in Arequipa, Nazca Lines, Paracas Reserve, Ballestas Islands, the Lake Titikaca in Puno or still visit Copacabana, Sun Island, Uyuni Salar in Bolivia.
  • ALTITUDE or MOUNTAIN SICKNESS, SOROCHE.- Altitude sickness is serious and can ruin your trip. The biggest mistake you can make is to fly directly to Cuzco (3326m/10,910ft) and expect to hike the next day. Give yourself a few days to adjust to the altitude first.  Altitude sickness, also known as acute mountain sickness (AMS), altitude illness, hypobaropathy, or Soroche, is a pathological effect of high altitude on humans, caused by acute exposure to the low partial pressure of oxygen at high altitude. It commonly occurs above 2,400 meters (approximately 8,000 feet). Acute mountain sickness can progress to high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) or high altitude cerebral edema (HACE). The causes of altitude sickness are not fully understood. The percentage of oxygen in air remains essentially constant with altitude at 21% up until 70,000 feet (21,330 m), but the air pressure (and therefore the number of oxygen molecules) drops as altitude increases consequently, the available amount of oxygen to sustain mental and physical alertness decreases above 10,000 feet (3,050m). Altitude sickness usually does not affect persons traveling in aircraft because the cabin altitude in modern passenger aircraft is kept to 8,000 feet (2,440 m) or lower.     A superficially related condition is chronic mountain sickness, also known as Monge's disease, occurring only after prolonged exposure to high altitude. An unrelated condition, often confused with altitude sickness, is dehydration, due to the higher rate of water vapor lost from the lungs at higher altitudes.
  • Those who ascend rapidly to altitudes greater than 2500m (8100 ft) may develop altitude sickness. In Peru, this includes Cusco ( 3326m) Machupicchu (2400m) and Lake Titicaca (3820m). Being physically fit offers no protection. Those who have experienced altitude sickness in the past are prone to future episodes. The risk increases with faster ascents, higher altitudes and greater exertion.
  • Symptoms may include headaches, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, malaise, insomnia and loss of appetite. Severe cases may be complicated by fluids in the lungs (high-altitude pulmonary edema) or swelling of the brain  (high-altitude cerebral edema) If symptoms are more than mild or persist for more than 24 hours (far less at high altitudes), descend immediately by at least 500 meters and see a doctor. To help prevent altitude sickness, the best measure is to spend two nights or more at each rise of 1000m. Alternatively, take 125mg or 250mg of acetazolamide (Diamox) twice or three times daily starting 24 hours before ascent and continuing for 48 hours after arrival at altitude. Possible side effects include increased urinary volume, numbness, tingling, nausea, drowsiness, myopia and temporary impotence. Acetazolamide should not be given to pregnant women or anyone with a history of sulfa allergy. For those who cannot tolerate acetazolamide, the next best option is 4 mg of dexamethasone taken four times daily. Unlike acetazolamide, dexamethasone must be tapered gradually upon arrival at altitude, since there is a risk that altitude sickness will occur as the dosage is reduced. Dexamethasone is a steroid, so it should not be given to diabetics or anyone for whom taking steroids is not advice. A natural alternative is ginkgo biloba, which some people find quite helpful.  When traveling to high altitudes, it´s also important to avoid overexertion, eat light meals and abstain from alcohol  Altitude sickness should be taken seriously, it can be life-threatening when severe.

This ticket will be for the second turn at approx 10:30 after your guided tour of Machupicchu.
  • 4.- FINAL PAYMENT: You must pay the full balance of your tour 1 month before the date of your tour departure using any of the payment options above. If you need to amend or add anything to your final confirmation invoice ie rental of sleeping bags or trekkking poles etc you should contact us at least 6 weeks prior to the tour. This is done by responding to the email with your final confirmation and indicating the rental ítems to be added and then we can adjust your invoice accordingly and reconfirm the exact balance you need to pay by emailing you within that week. (you need to add the 5% credit card comission or 6% Pay pal commission or other fees depending on which payment method you choose.

A Youth Travel card or International Teachers cards are not accepted by the control.
  • 6.- You must carry your original passport and valid ISIC card (if applicable) on the trail, If you do not take the correct original passport as indicated in your permit, the control will annul your permit and refuse you entrance to the trail. If for any reason, you organize a new passport after we have purchased your permits, you must bring the old passport with you, or if this is impossible advise us in writing with a scan of the old passport and your new passport for us to present to the INC with official documentation to avoid problems. Administration charge for this formal change is (US$ 15 pp)
  • 7.- Unless you hire an extra shared porter you need to carry your back pack, sleeping bag and a mattress (about 3.8 Kg), personal items, clothing and water for the day to drink, if you want an extra shared porter (for the full trip) you must have booked this with your original booking form as they require permits as well or send us an email immediately. Please note that we do this because we are prohibited to re-sell your spot after you have cancelled. However you can use part of the permit for Machupicchu admission in other tour such as Lares, Salkantay, or train tours to Machupicchu, if the entrance dates match, etc .
  • 10.- The Inca Trail Classic 4D/3N package includes: Train transport return to Cusco depends on train company availability. The train company only confirm the train schedule option to trekking agencies a few days before a trek for one way tickets from Aguas Calientes in high season dates. The train schedule offered could be anywhere between 4pm and 9pm and usually requires a private bus connection from Ollantaytambo to Cusco provided by SAS Travel. Our preference would be a train departure between 16:30 pm – 5:30 pm but needs to have enough seats available to accommodate the group and usually this is not an issue except around large festivals such as Inti Raymi, Independence day and Easter.
  • 11.- Train tickets: Changes to schedules or dates when train tickets have been finalised incurs an administration charge of US$ 10 per ticket. At times a change of date may only be possible with an upgrade and so the difference in price would need to be paid.
  • 12.- If you become ill or injured on the trail and are unable to continue, a porter will be provided to accompany you back to an area with emergency assistance capabilities. helicopter air lifts and medical assistance are paid at the expense of the passenger, if you fail to complete the tour due to illness we will assist you to meet with your group at Machupicchu to recommence your tour at that point, although there will be no refund from the original payment, we will however, present you with a document to certify illness and which can be used to present to your travel insurance company.
  • 13.- SAS Travel will take all reasonable care in providing service to our clients to avoid accident, illness, loss of personal property and will only employ suitably qualified staff. We accept responsibility for the actions of our own employees. SAS Travel cannot however be responsible for any action or event that was unforeseeable or unavoidable. We also cannot be responsible for improper acts by clients or other third party. You are totally responsable for your own personal property and rented equipment.

We reserve the right to modify or cancel the program due to any of the unforeseen conditions listed above.
  • 15.- In extreme cases when “ Inca trail to Machupicchu” is declared closed for safety reasons SAS Travel can replace your trek with an alternative trek such as 4 Day Lares trek or 4 day Choquequirao trek and your booking deposit money will be used for this or if you prefer an alternative tour such as 4 day Lake Titicaca package or Jungle trip etc to give you some of the many options.
  • 16.- Travel Insurance.- We srrongly recommend that full travel insurance is taken, which includes cover, under certain circumstances, against the loss of deposit or cancellation charges. Please note that no reimbursements are given when cancellations occur or for any unused services.
  • SAS Travel will do everything possible to assure a safe and enjoyable trip but we will not accept any responsibility for damages, injuries, losses, expenses due to delays, for any cause whatsoever, this applies to any person or property in connection with any service we or our intermediaries provide, which result directly or indirectly from acts of God or forces mayor.

CDC updates and simplifies respiratory virus recommendations

Recommendations are easier to follow and help protect those most at risk

For Immediate Release: Friday, March 1, 2024 Contact: Media Relations (404) 639-3286

CDC released today updated recommendations  for how people can protect themselves and their communities from respiratory viruses, including COVID-19. The new guidance brings a unified approach to addressing risks from a range of common respiratory viral illnesses, such as COVID-19, flu, and RSV, which can cause significant health impacts and strain on hospitals and health care workers. CDC is making updates to the recommendations now because the U.S. is seeing far fewer hospitalizations and deaths associated with COVID-19 and because we have more tools than ever to combat flu, COVID, and RSV.

“Today’s announcement reflects the progress we have made in protecting against severe illness from COVID-19,” said CDC Director Dr. Mandy Cohen. “However, we still must use the commonsense solutions we know work to protect ourselves and others from serious illness from respiratory viruses—this includes vaccination, treatment, and staying home when we get sick.”

As part of the guidance, CDC provides active recommendations on core prevention steps and strategies:

  • Staying  up to date with vaccination   to protect people against serious illness, hospitalization, and death. This includes flu, COVID-19, and RSV if eligible.
  • Practicing good hygiene by covering coughs and sneezes, washing or sanitizing hands often, and cleaning frequently touched surfaces.
  • Taking steps for cleaner air , such as bringing in more fresh outside air, purifying indoor air, or gathering outdoors.

When people get sick with a respiratory virus, the updated guidance recommends that they stay home and away from others. For people with COVID-19 and influenza, treatment is available and can lessen symptoms and lower the risk of severe illness. The recommendations suggest returning to normal activities when, for at least 24 hours, symptoms are improving overall, and if a fever was present, it has been gone without use of a fever-reducing medication.

Once people resume normal activities, they are encouraged to take additional prevention strategies for the next 5 days to curb disease spread, such as taking more steps for cleaner air, enhancing hygiene practices, wearing a well-fitting mask, keeping a distance from others, and/or getting tested for respiratory viruses. Enhanced precautions are especially important to protect those most at risk for severe illness, including those over 65 and people with weakened immune systems. CDC’s updated guidance reflects how the circumstances around COVID-19 in particular have changed.  While it remains a threat, today it is far less likely to cause severe illness because of widespread immunity and improved tools to prevent and treat the disease.  Importantly, states and countries that have already adjusted recommended isolation times have not seen increased hospitalizations or deaths related to COVID-19.

While every respiratory virus does not act the same, adopting a unified approach to limiting disease spread makes recommendations easier to follow and thus more likely to be adopted and does not rely on individuals to test for illness, a practice that data indicates is uneven.

“The bottom line is that when people follow these actionable recommendations to avoid getting sick, and to protect themselves and others if they do get sick, it will help limit the spread of respiratory viruses, and that will mean fewer people who experience severe illness,” National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases Director Dr. Demetre Daskalakis said. “That includes taking enhanced precautions that can help protect people who are at higher risk for getting seriously ill.”

The updated guidance also includes specific sections with additional considerations for people who are at higher risk of severe illness from respiratory viruses, including people who are immunocompromised, people with disabilities, people who are or were recently pregnant, young children, and older adults. Respiratory viruses remain a public health threat. CDC will continue to focus efforts on ensuring the public has the information and tools to lower their risk or respiratory illness by protecting themselves, families, and communities.

This updated guidance is intended for community settings. There are no changes to respiratory virus guidance for healthcare settings.

### U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES

Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are curable or preventable, chronic or acute, or from human activity or deliberate attack, CDC’s world-leading experts protect lives and livelihoods, national security and the U.S. economy by providing timely, commonsense information, and rapidly identifying and responding to diseases, including outbreaks and illnesses. CDC drives science, public health research, and data innovation in communities across the country by investing in local initiatives to protect everyone’s health.
