Mayrhofen is a skiing resort in Austria . It's also the main base for skiing on the slopes of the Ziller Valley .

Understand [ edit ]

The city brochure found in the tourist office is unexpectedly useful and comprehensive—surely grab a copy for your stay. It includes timetables for all trains and buses running from and around the city (including the skibus lines around the Ziller Valley) and lists most businesses you may ever need in the city. It largely duplicates content from the Mayrhofen official site . Russians are the most frequent visitors, followed by those from the UK and Benelux.

Tourist Information , Am Marktplatz 219 , ☏ +43 5285-6760 , fax : +43 6760-33 , [email protected] . From Dec 19: open M-Sa 09:00-18:00; reduced hours on 24-26 Dec, 31 Dec, 1 Jan .

When to go [ edit ]

Most agents (and therefore hotels themselves) sell lodging in weekly packs, Saturday afternoon to next Saturday morning.

This results in higher prices for some services (e.g. private instructors) for Su-Tu, and lowest prices for F-Sa.

Arrival day [ edit ]

To get the most of your time at the resort, use your arrival day to prepare everything you need for getting onto the slopes from the early morning of the next day. Plan to arrive at your hotel no later than check-in time, and go for preparations immediately.

Here are the average open hours for Saturday of different businesses you will likely need:

  • 14:00: check-in time at your hotel
  • 08:00-18:00 (Su 09:00): business hours for most skiing schools . Allow at least 15 minutes to settle all details.
  • 08:00-18:00: business hours for most ski rental shops. Allow at least half an hour for fitting, plus queuing time.
  • 08:30-16:30: business hours for the skipass sales counter.

Other hours for a typical day [ edit ]

  • breakfast at hotel: 07:00-10:30
  • skiing schools, group courses: 09:45–12:15 / 13:00-15:30pm (start time is for a meeting point up after ski lifts)
  • dinner at hotel (typical half-board): 19:00-22:00

What things cost [ edit ]

  • skipass 5 of 7 days: €180 ; 6 days €205
  • ski equipment rental: €50-60 per week per person
  • ski school (group courses, 2.5 hours per day): €102 / €111 for 3 / 4 days
  • ski school (private instructor, 4 hours per day): €180 / €165 / €160 per day for Su-Tu, W-Th, F-Sa
  • ski rental + 5 days' group course package: €169
  • average lunch (soup + average main): €20
  • double room in an average 3-star hotel: €110-140 in Jan-Feb

Get in [ edit ]

By train [ edit ].

Mayrhofen train station only sells tickets for the narrow-gauge railway, so make sure you purchase return tickets before you travel at Austrian Railways (ÖBB) .

From Vienna [ edit ]

Trains to Mayrhofen depart from Vienna Westbahnhof , not from Wien-Mitte

Getting in from Vienna to Mayrhofen by train is really comfortable compared to rented car, especially if you book your seats in a carriage with compartments, and is a good option if travelling with children. The journey takes 6 hours and you'll need to make a connection, but the connection in Jenbach is quite comfortable: there are lifts and no stairs to overcome; the train to Mayrhofen departs roughly every 30 min so you won't have to wait long. There is also a restaurant coach on board which is quite comfortable for children.

From Munich [ edit ]

Direct trains from Munich Hauptbahnhof to Jenbach. Once in Jenbach go to the Zillerteilbahn platform (ZL), from where the train departs to Mayrhofen every 30 min. The journey takes about 1 hr 30 min and costs around €7. You can buy the ticket directly on the train from the ticket man. The Zillerteilbahn becomes very busy with skiers towards the end; if you have luggage, store it so as to make room for everyone.

From Milan [ edit ]

Trains from Milan to Jenbach also are available. Once there, complete the journey to Mayrhofen as above.

By car [ edit ]

You won't need tyre chains to drive to Mayrhofen from any major city.

Get around [ edit ]

Any point of Mayrhofen can be easily reached on foot by an able-bodied person; it takes maximum of 1 hour to walk from one end to the other.

There's no need to have a car for skiing on other slopes of the Ziller Valley; ski buses take you everywhere, and for free most of the time. They also don't mind boarding a parent with a toddler and a pushchair, you don't even need to ask nicely most of the time.

See [ edit ]

Do [ edit ], winter sports [ edit ].

tourist office mayrhofen

There are two ski lifts in Mayrhofen itself: Penken and Ahorn. Besides them there are about dozen ski lifts in nearby villages, all of them easily reachable from Mayrhofen thanks to free ski buses. Those include Hintertux glacier.

Skipasses can also be purchased with a discount at Ascent Travel, which can be found in the lobby of Sporthotel Strass.

Unlike some other ski resorts, helmets are not mandatory to enter pistes, but as always the common sense thing is to wear it whenever on piste.

Basics of skiing resort [ edit ]

Grab a copy of pistenplan at the Skipass sales office or at tourist information; keep it with you while skiing. There are some maps on the slopes, but too few for an inexperienced skier.

Ski cellars. Most hotels have a special room called a ski cellar for storing guests equipment. This is also a place to dry your boots overnight, which is absolutely recommended, as otherwise your next day will be uncomfortable skiing in wet boots. The topmost rack is most effective, since the lower racks can be "rained on" from above by snow melting off others' boots.

Skiing schools [ edit ]

There are about 10 skiing schools in Mayrhofen. To give you idea of their services, prices and conditions, below are two most widely sold and prominently located schools. Be careful with "the only school with certified instructors speaking your language here " touting: in most cases, it only applies to private instructors who are much more expensive than group lessons.

  • Die Rotten Profis , ☏ +43 5285 63900 , +43 664 2104546 , [email protected] . Daily 08:00-18:00 . In group courses, those who joined at the beginning of week are forced to repeat the same set of introductory exercises day after day as new members are allowed to join the group every day.
  • Skischule Mayrhofen 3000 ( main office ), Hauptstraße 455 , ☏ +43 5285 64015 , +43 664 4637490 , [email protected] . M-F 08:00-11:00, 15:00-18:00; Sa 08:00-19:00; Su 08:00-12:00, 13:00-18:00 .

With children [ edit ]

Skiing schools accept children for training from 3 years old.

Ski rental [ edit ]

There are more than 10 shops offering equipment rental, and the competition is quite tough so expect their services and quality to be quite similar to each other.

No cash deposit is required in exchange for the equipment you rent.

If you choose to learn with a skiing school, the easiest option is to rent equipment directly from them. After the declared "special discount for school clients" it's a maximum of 10% more expensive than from a dedicated rental shop.

In any case, most shops (and schools) offer a good choice of equipment levels, from very beginners to quite advanced.

You take the full set of equipment for the duration of your rental and return it to the shop only on the last day. During that period, you either store it in your hotel or leave it at one of the ski depots (i.e. paid storages) at the base station or near the ski lift station. The only exception is SkiZone rentals, who offer free nightly storage of equipment you rented from them.

With young children [ edit ]

Young children will find walking around the village terribly boring, and this is best avoided as much as possible. Leaving kindergarten aside (see Cope section), there are several things to do in Mayrhofen:

  • Sledding on a small children's slope just near the exit from Penken lift. Rent them for €3 per day from a depot, or buy rounded sled in any shop down in the city. You'll need a second Skipass for this activity; a half-day pass is usually sufficient.
  • Spend time in the swimming pool and wellness complex .
  • Make sure you stay at a hotel with its own playground, as there aren't many public ones in the village.

Healthy alternatives to après-ski [ edit ]

Activities:

  • swim and take sauna at the wellness complex
  • skate on the rink near the wellness complex
  • Erlbenisbad Mayrhofen , Waldbadstraße 539 , ☏ +43 5285 62559 , fax : +43 5285 62559-50 . Swimming pool: 10:30-21:00; sauna: 12:00-21:30 . The sauna complex is mixed-sex only and has four types of sauna, a soaking pool, and an outdoor balcony to walk on the snow or sit down at a deckchair and cool off for a while. The swimming pool features two indoor water slides, a lazy river, a jacuzzi pool for 6-7 people, and a number of outdoor facilities open in summer only. The sauna and swimming pool have separate entrances and changing rooms, but once you're in you can walk from one to the other via an electronic ticket barrier. Sauna+swimming pool: €14, all day. Towels can be rented for €1, plus a €10 deposit per group .

Piste details [ edit ]

Penken [ edit ].

  • #7 : has 2 or 3 points of misleading navigation and two nearly horizontal pieces. This is easy to overcome if you gain enough speed before them. Worth it for a long wide-and-safe sector for a good speed.
  • #8 : very comfortable for safe and speedy skiing, from beginning to end. Perfect for those bored by #2 and #20 and find #7 too difficult to navigate.

Hintertux [ edit ]

  • #2 : although it's marked as red, it's quite comfortable for intermediate skiers. To have enough control, having even snow here is more important than for many other pistes, otherwise you'll bump on snowdrifts too often; head here in the early morning.
  • #15 : mostly oriented towards beginners; very simple and short
  • #17 : has two sections which are safe for speedy riding.

Buy [ edit ]

There are five or six equipment stores in the city. They will help to cover a missing piece in your kit, but don't expect to find many serious brands or professional-level equipment.

Beyond skiing equipment, there is some choice of perfumes and toys, but prices are generally higher than in Innsbruck or Vienna.

There are also several discount stores selling high-street brands.

Food specialities [ edit ]

  • wine store , near Gasthof Bruecke . until 6pm . Features ice wine for €12 for a small bottle.

There are 2 or 3 pharmacies where you can buy baby food and nappies.

  • DM Drodgerie Markt ( pharmacy ), Dursterstrasse 220, , ☏ +43 5285650200 . Arguably the best choice of baby stuff: two or three brands of nappies, several brands of baby food, plus fruit puree in speciality packaging.

Eat [ edit ]

Budget [ edit ], mid-range [ edit ].

  • Kostner ( cafe and confectionery ). Probably the most popular in the city among families with young children. Lovely cafe selling snacks and light meals, mostly sandwiches and pasta. The key feature for children is a cave leading to a heated balcony full of toys where "no parents are allowed" (cave is too small). Also features an outdoor terrace open in winter. Try their strudel. Desserts around €3; glühwein €3.90; cappuccino about €3 . ( updated Jan 2018 )

Splurge [ edit ]

  • 47.330288 11.862109 1 Edhof , Kapfingerstraße 11, 6263 Kapfing , ☏ +43 6764467402 . Steakhouse supplied by Zillertal farmers. They have a standard menu, but the it's the steaks you want to visit for. The standard €27 steak gets you 250g with a sauce of choice. There isn't a lot of seating capacity so it's recommended to reserve in advance. ( updated Dec 2023 )

Drink [ edit ]

Sleep [ edit ].

  • Gasthof Bruecke ( guesthouse ). Check-in: 14:00 , check-out: 10:00 . A decent choice for young families. Sold in Sat-to-Sat weeks most of the time in winter. Large double rooms with three wardrobes. Half-board dinner is good value for money and filling, while breakfast is just normal. Dedicated room to store guests' skiing equipment. Free private sauna complex with several types of sauna. Loud early evening après-ski and late-night weekend disco in nearby buildings; ask for a quieter room when booking if you are not that type. Very unhelpful reception. Wi-Fi available only near reception and in the bar area, at €5 per hour. double with halfboard: Jan-Feb: €140 .
  • 47.330482 11.864286 1 Hotel Giessenbach , Schöffstallstraße 1, 6263 Fügen , ☏ +43 528862901 . Check-in: 15:00 , check-out: 10:00 . Modern hotel with rooms and apartments, well suited for families. Next to the busy main road through the valley so not exactly quiet. ( updated Dec 2023 )

There are only four hotels rated as four- or five-stars in the village:

  • Hotel Neue Post , Haupstraße 400 , ☏ +43 5285 62131 , [email protected] . 700-m walk to Penken ski lifts.
  • Hotel Neuhaus , Am Marktplatz 202 , ☏ +43 52-856-7030 , [email protected] . double with half-board, €144-240 .
  • Sporthotel Strass , Hauptstraße 470 , ☏ +43 5285 6705 , [email protected] . Featuring large wellness complex; just next door to the Penken ski lift. €87-112 in Dec-Feb for a regular double, half board .
  • Hotel Elizabeth , Einfahrt Mitte 432 , ☏ +43 5285 6767 , [email protected] . 600 m walk from the Penken ski lift.

Connect [ edit ]

Mobile [ edit ].

There are four or five shops selling mobile contracts, but all are quite far away from the main street. Consult the tourist office brochure for exact addresses and directions.

Internet [ edit ]

Internet access is rare and expensive in the city; there are only one or two cafes offering free Wi-Fi, while most hotels charge something like €5 per hour.

Cope [ edit ]

Weather conditions on the ski slopes are very close to what is in the Mayrhofen itself; it's only significantly colder (and more wind) on the Hintertux glacier: expect the temperature there to be 5°C colder.

  • Ski kindergarten at Penken, by Total SMT ski school ( Skikinderhort am Penken ), Skihuette Penken , ☏ +43 5285-63090 . 09:00-15:30 daily . Supervises children from 2 to 4 years in their own playroom, on an hourly or daily basis.
  • Wuppy's Kinderland ( kindergarten ), Waldbadstraße 539 , ☏ +43 5285-63612 . M-F 09:00-17:00 . Welcomes children from 3 months to 7 years. Book your stay at least the day before to secure a place. €20 for half a day; €30 for a full day .
  • Tourism Association Mayrhofen ( babysitting service agency ), ☏ +43 5285-6760 . Call Mayrhofen tourist info office for details

Attractions in Mayrhofen-Hippach

A masterpiece of engineering, a twisting mountain road and a high-speed zipwire – the Schlegeis reservoir is one of the main attractions in Mayrhofen-Hippach, but this region in the Zillertal Valley also has plenty more to offer.

Located at the end of the Zillertal Valley, the Schlegeis reservoir is a huge expanse of water held back by a masterpiece of modern engineering. It can be accessed via the Schlegeis Alpine Road – a dream for drivers, motorcyclists and roadbike riders. Ever heard of the Christmas carol "Silent Night"? It comes from the Zillertal Valley! There is a museum here dedicated to this song and its history. It is housed in a 300-year-old farmhouse where the Strasser family once lived. Foodies should check out the Erlebnis-Sennerei Zillertal, a dairy farm and cheemakers. The Adlerbühne Ahorn is a birds of prey centre where eagles, buzzards and eagle owls feature in the regular shows.

Altitude: 630 m a.s.l.

In the rear Zillertal valley, there is one of the largest municipalities of Tyrol, which is Mayrhofen with its widely spread hamlets. The village is surrounded by impressive mountain massifs such as Mt. Grosser Löffler, which represents the border to the Valle Aurina valley in South Tyrol in Italy. Not only the numerous hiking paths, but also a stage of the Tyrol Mountain Bike Safari and some theme parks are perfect to explore this great scenery.

The Ahorn and Penken mountains invite to Funballz and flight demonstrations. As its name implies, the Action Mountain Penken is the place for adventures: From the Funsport Station, you can explore the surrounding landscape with Mountain Scooters, and have fun on the small pond with the Funballz. The Leisure Mountain Ahorn, however, is home to birds of prey. The Ahorn Eagle's Stage at more than 2,000 m a.s.l. is the highest located bird of prey station in all of Europe.

In winter, the valley is covered by snow and thus perfectly suitable for winter sports. Out of the pool of the five skiing areas, including the one of Mayrhofen, the Ski & Glacier World Zillertal 3000 emerged, which today is the one of the largest ski regions in the valley, boasting 210.5 km of slopes. You need a rush of adrenaline? So you will love the Harakiri, the steepest slope throughout Austria, featuring a drop of 78 %. In summer, you can overcome it in the Run & Walk Park.

10 BEAUTIFUL Things To Do in Mayrhofen, Austria (Hikes & Activities)

When it comes to exploring the Austrian Alps, it doesn’t get much better than the valley town of Mayrhofen.

Located in the Zillertal Alps, Mayrhofen offers some of the best hiking trails, mountain huts, and outdoor activities that you can ask for.

This guide will go through some of the best things to do in Mayrhofen in summer, and how to prepare yourself for a visit.

1) How to Get to Mayrhofen

First things first, you must get yourself to Austria.

While you can take flights into Vienna and make your way west from there, you can also fly directly into Innsbruck. The Innsbruck airport is located less than an hour away from Mayrhofen by car.

Once in Austria, you can decide to travel to Mayrhofen either by rental car or by public transport.

In general, I did find renting a car to be the most convenient way to explore Austria (and nearby Bavaria ) at my own pace.

By having a car, I was able to make my way to trailheads, leave on my schedule, and not need to worry about catching busses & trains around the country.

Now, if you are ONLY planning on visiting Mayrhofen, then renting a car may not be worth it, since you can easily take advantage of the public transport around the area.

But if you are planning a longer Austria road trip, then check out Rentalcars.com for potential car options that would work best for you.

Public Transport

Taking public transport to Mayrhofen should not be an issue, no matter where you are coming from in Austria.

There are essentially two main logistical aspects to consider:

1) OBB Train to Jenbach

First you will need to hop on a train that will let you off in Jenbach.

From Vienna for example, it is just 7 stops and takes 4.5 hours (from Innsbruck, just 15 minutes).

2) Zillertalbahn to Mayrhofen

The Jenbach station is located at the start of the valley. So, from there you will switch onto another form of transport to Mayrhofen.

The Zillertalbahn train is one of the main options that will take you down to Mayrhofen.

It takes around 50 minutes, as it makes stops throughout the valley before arriving at Mayrhofen Bahnhof.

In addition to the train, you can also take a bus (i.e route 8330) that heads between Innsbruck, Jenbach, and Mayrhofen with some more stops in between.

Now, if you want to head out to Mayrhofen in style, why not head on the steam train .

The steam train will run fewer times per day, but is a more unique option to consider as you complete the journey from Jenbach to Mayrhofen.

Mayrhofen Train

2) How to Get Around

Once you are in Mayrhofen, you will need to think about how to get around the area.

Luckily many attractions and activities are going to be within walking distance of town. So, depending on your interests, you may not need additional transportation to get around (besides for some cable cars that is).

But if you are trying to visit places further away from the town center, that is where you will need to consider your options.

If you have your own rental car, then there is not much to worry about. Like I said, you can be on your own schedule and head out to any trailhead or attraction as you see fit.

However, if you don’t have your own rental car, then you will need to leverage the public transport network that Mayrhofen has to offer.

In Mayrhofen, there are many busses that can take you all around the valley to most of the tops spots you would want to visit.

Simply figure out your route for the day, head on over to the Mayrhofen website for schedules , and then make your way to the station in town.

Google Maps does a pretty decent job of helping out with routes, and you can also get some transport info from your hotel if need be.

Schlegeis Stausee Lake Walk

3) Mayrhofen Weather & When to Visit

When it comes to Mayrhofen, it is a year-round destination.

During the winter time, you will find ski runs in the surrounding mountains and a fun après ski environment in town.

When the snow melts, the hiking trails open up and Mayrhofen becomes a top summer destination for travelers.

Since this guide will focus more on that summer aspect of travel, that is what I will go over here.

While hiking in the valley and at lower elevations will open up earlier, some of the higher elevation hikes may still be too dangerous in the Spring/Fall periods.

In general, the main hiking season will be between late June and September.

Not only will the snow be melted away, but some seasonal bus routes only operate between those months.

This holds true for the famous Schlegeis Alpine Road, which opens sometime in May and closes at some point in October.

Now, when visiting during the summer, you can expect some beautiful days of clear skies and more overcast days as well. If hiking up in the mountains, you will want to avoid those times when clouds are blocking all those beautiful views.

I would recommend checking out Meteoblue and Bergfex for the most accurate forecasts around the region.

You can also take a look at some live webcams , such as the one on top of the Ahornbahn.

4) Where to Stay in Mayrhofen

When it comes to Mayrhofen, you will find a pleasant town to walk around and enjoy during your time there.

All around Mayrhofen, you will find hotels within walking distance from the town center.

In addition to classic hotels, there are also guesthouses and serviced apartments that can be found around the area.

There really is a great variety to choose from across all budget options.

To make things simple though, below are a few of the top accommodation options to consider for your stay:

Luxury: Hotel Neue Post | Alpin Lodge das Zillergrund  | ElisabethHotel Premium Private Retreat

Mid Range: Sporthotel Manni | Alpendomizil Neuhaus | Zillertalerhof Alpine Hideaway

Budget: Birkenhof | Landhotel Rauchenwalderhof | Gasthof Edelweiss

5) The Top Things To Do in Mayrhofen

Now that you have a better background about Mayrhofen, it is now time to talk through some of the top things to do in and around the town.

» Head to Mayrhofen as part of your 7 Day Austria Itinerary visiting places all over the country

Olpererhutte Hike

Located up the Schlegeis Alpine Road, you will find the starting point of the famous Olpererhutte hike.

If you have seen those photos with the small bridge floating atop a river with the lake & mountains out back, this is your spot.

The Olpererhutte is an overnight hut that is located up in the mountains above the Schlegeis reservoir (Schlegeis Stausee).

While staying in the hut overnight is one option to consider, you can also simply head out to the hut on a day hike from the parking lot down below.

During the hike you will be able to enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding Austria Alps along with Schlegeis Stausee out in the distance.

Olpererhutte Hiking Trail Mayrhofen

Once you reach the hut, it is then just a few more minutes of hiking towards the famous bridge.

You can take some photos and enjoy the view before heading back down the same direction you came.

The hike comes in at around 3 hours round trip along with 6 km / 3.7 miles of length and 600 meters / 1,970 feet of elevation gain.

It is the perfect hike length for those that want a shorter overall trail, but still get some of the best views out there (in addition to spending time at the hut too).

Getting to the trailhead is pretty simple altogether. You will either just drive yourself to the starting point, or hop on the seasonal bus route that will get you to the same spot.

Also be aware that the Schlegeis Alpine Road is only open in the May to October timeframe (give or take). So, you can only hike the trail and head up the road during that time.

Be sure to read the Olpererhutte hike overview that will go into more detail about it all.

Mayrhofen Hikes To Do

Schlegeis 131

Staying on topic with the Schlegeis Stausee area is Schlegeis 131 .

When it comes to adrenaline inducing things to do in Mayrhofen, this is certainly going to be on the top of the list.

While Schlegeis may look like a natural lake at first glance, it is actually a reservoir. And at the edge of the reservoir is a large wall that drops down into the valley.

The wall comes in at 131 meters in height, hence the name Schlegeis 131.

There are a few different offerings at the wall including:

  • Flying Fox : a 600 meter / 1,970 foot zipline that goes from one side of the wall to the other.
  • Giant Swing : this is essentially a bungee jump, where you hop off of a platform located at the top of the wall.
  • Sports Climbing : on the wall you will find a bottom to top rock climbing course to take part of.
  • Via Ferrata : also on the wall are a couple via ferrata routes. This entails hooking in and out of metal wires and “walking” along the wall itself.

Fun Things To Do in Mayrhofen

Friesenberghaus

Another mountain hut that is located in the same general area as the Olpererhutte is called the Friesenberghaus .

This is another hut that you can day hike to (or stay overnight at) and can be reached from the Schlegeis Stausee parking lot.

Depending on your fitness levels, you can actually combine the Olpererhutte and Friesenberghaus into one longer loop hike.

However, if you don’t want to overdo it, then heading just out and back to the Friesenberghaus will be well worth the effort too.

Friesenberghaus Hike Mayrhofen

The out & back route should be around 4 hours in length (including the Olpererhutte will add an additional ~2 hours to the route).

Note : some folks prefer not to do the combo route because a portion of the trail between the Olpererhutte and Friesenberghaus can be on very rocky & unstable terrain.

The hike up and down to the Friesenberghaus is a beautiful one to take in as you get plenty of various mountain, lake, and valley views all around.

I especially enjoy the hike back down, as you have so much scenic landscape out in front of you, and the trail is quite pleasant to follow.

Hiking Tip: once you reach the Friesenberghaus, you can extend the hike to a viewpoint above the hut itself. In this area, called the Peterskopfl, you will find hundreds of rock piles sprawled throughout the area.

Mayrhofen Trails Summer

Ahorn Mountain

Standing tall high above Mayrhofen is Ahorn Mountain (also known as the Ahornspitze).

Luckily, to reach the main activity area on the mountain (the Ahorn Plateau), you can simply take the Ahornbahn that will immediately take you to 2,000 meters above sea level.

Once you reach the top of the Ahornbahn, it is up to you to decide what type of activities to take part of.

There are some very easy and enjoyable hiking trails in the immediate vicinity including the Leisure Ahorn Trail and Filzenalm Alpine Farming Trail.

In addition, you will find Lake Ahornsee , which is the perfect place to just sit back, enjoy the view, and dip your feet in the water.

For those bird lovers out there, Ahorn mountain has the Birds of Prey Station . Various birds can be seen here during the daily show that is put on.

Ahorn Lake

And lastly, there is of course the opportunity to hike to the very top of Ahornspitze as well.

Instead of just hanging out at the plateau, you can spend the day heading to the summit.

This is going to be a longer trail, coming in at 6-7 hours round trip. The hike covers 12 km / 7.5 miles along with nearly 1,000 meters / 3,300 feet of elevation gain.

I would recommend taking the first gondola up in the morning (the “hiker’s gondola”) to give yourself enough time to fully enjoy the hike.

Be sure to check out the Ahorn Mountain guide to learn more about this one of kind trail .

Hiking in Mayrhofen Austria

Penken Mountain

While the Ahornbahn is one of the gondolas offered in Mayrhofen, the Penkenbahn in the other.

Penken mountain offers a whole variety of things to do in Mayrhofen for the family.

Once up top the gondola you will find the “FunSportStation”. There are activities such as the Mountain Scooter Tour, MotorSkills Parcours course, and the Mountain Playground.

The mountain also offers live music and entertainment at MusikInsel , if that is something that sounds fun & exciting to you.

Hiking trails, mountain bike trails, via ferratas, and paragliding are also all available from atop the Penkenbahn.

There really is something for everyone here to enjoy a day out in the mountains.

Penken Mountain Cable Car

Berlin High Trail

For those multi day hikers out there, the Berlin High Trail is the top option to choose from.

Over the course of 6-8 days and 85 km / 53 miles, you will encircle the Zillertal Alps, as you stay in mountain huts along the route.

There really is no other hike in the area that will offer everything that this one does.

Mountains, lakes, valleys, and more will be a constant throughout the route.

If you are up for the challenge, then be sure to book your huts in advance to guarantee a spot.

Mayrhofen Summer Hiking

Via Ferrata / Klettersteig

I touched upon this briefly before, but all throughout the area you will find various via ferrata / Klettersteig courses.

This is going to be one of the more thrilling things to do in Mayrhofen during a stay.

A via ferrata (also called Klettersteig) is essentially a fixed route on the mountainside. You will need a harness, carabiners, and helmet to complete these routes in a safe manner (these can be rented in town).

Each route can have varying difficulties so be very aware of this when picking your course.

Throughout a via ferrata you will be clipping in and out of a fixed wire as you use the mountainside & metal pegs/rungs to continue on the route.

It really is a mixture between hiking & rock climbing, as it gives people the chance to go above and beyond compared to what they may normally do.

Check out the Mayrhofen via ferrata overview to learn more about these routes in the area .

Climbing Via Ferrata Austria

River Rafting the Ziller River

What better way to experience the beautiful Ziller River than to take a river rafting ride.

There are a few different river rafting experiences depending on the intensity you are looking for.

During a ride down the river, you will head around rapids, take in the beautiful Zillertal Valley scenery, and get some adrenaline going all at the same time.

You can check out the latest offerings , which also include other experiences like canyoning.

Ziller River Mayrhofen

Paragliding Over Mayrhofen

If you want to get the best views in the region, then why not head on a paragliding experience.

During a tour, you will take off from Penken Mountain and soar around the Austrian Alps in all directions.

Getting that bird’s eye view of the town, lakes, rivers, and mountains is going to be an experience like none other.

Expect the tour to take a couple of hours, but your time in the air to last between 20-30 minutes.

Feel free to book your Mayrhofen Paragliding tour to guarantee your spot in the air!

Walk Around Town

While heading up in the mountains and to the lakes are sure to be exciting, just walking around town will be a great thing to do in Mayrhofen as well.

The town is full of walking streets, unique architecture, and plenty of shops & restaurants throughout.

Taking some time out of your day to just head through the streets and take it all in will be the perfect addition to your itinerary.

You are bound to pass by the Ziller River as well, and it can be quite pleasant to just take a stroll along it during your time in town.

Mayrhofen Town Walk

That wraps up a guide to the best things to do in Mayrhofen, Austria.

If you have any questions or comments, be sure to add them in below.

Also, don’t forget to check out some of the other Austria itineraries and guides up on the site.

Have fun out there and safe travels!

Mayrhofen is located at the end of the long flat Ziller valley and is one of Austria's best-known ski resorts. A good mix of upmarket hotels and cheaper pensions and apartments makes for an interesting atmosphere in the ski resort and the nightlife and après ski is renowned for its duration and variety.

The skiing - and snowboarding - on offer is spectacular and ranges from the Hintertux glacier a few kilometers away to the high alpine slopes of Gerlos. But most visitors to Mayrhofen will spend their time on the two local areas - Mount Penken, a substantial and well-linked collection of mountains and slopes, or Mount Ahorn, the smaller alternative reached from the edge ofthe town.

Location: 6290 Mayrhofen - Tyrol - Austria

The Ziller valley is sometimes credited as being the cradle of tourism to the Tyrol. Mayrhofen certainly has a rich history in catering first for city-dwellers who wanted to visit the mountains for the scenery and the clean air in the summer and later for winter sports enthusiasts who took to the mountain slopes in the colder months.

The town itself is quite busy and lively during the day and at night, and, although the main traffic is kept away from the centre, the buses and taxis still do a roaring trade with people staying here and visiting from the other resorts in the Zillertal.

Moscow Travel Guide: Best Things to Do + More [2023]

· everything to know about visiting moscow, including the best things to do and how to get around. ·.

the red st basils church in moscow on a white winters day

Moscow is Russia’s vibrant capital city, and it also happens to be the largest city in all of Europe. The city’s long and infamous history makes it one of the most unique places we have ever visited.

The architecture ranges from centuries-old palaces to uniform, gray concrete buildings. The people range from cold and private to warm and welcoming. Moscow is a city is strong juxtapositions, and we learned a lot during our time there.

This post will break down all you need to know about visiting Moscow, including the best things to do, how to get there, how to get around, and more.

The Best Things to Do in Moscow

1. explore the red square.

The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.

The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.

2. Check Out the Ziferblat

The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.

Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.

For a detailed look at everything you need to know before you visit, make sure you read my post about visiting the Ziferblat Cafe in Moscow .

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.

St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church

4. Explore the Kremlin

The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.

5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum

Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.

6. Wander Along Arbat Street

The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.

7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre

As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.

8. Visit the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.

The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.

9. Wander Around GUM

GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.

While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.

10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.

How to Get to Moscow

Flying to moscow.

Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.

Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.

I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.

Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. I wrote in  my post about finding cheap flights  that using hub airports will lead to more affordable airfare, and the same logic applies here. Even though Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Moscow is still a major hub connecting passengers from all over the world.

Train or Bus to Moscow

Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.

Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.

If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.

How to Get Around Moscow

METRO | TROLLEYS | TRAMS | BUSES

Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.

The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.

Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.

But wait; there’s more!

The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.

Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.

The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow.

In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. There is no Uber in Moscow, but a similar app named Yandex is available if you need a ride in a pinch.

How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?

Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!

I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.

Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.

If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.

When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?

There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.

We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.

If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.

The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.

Is Moscow Safe to Visit?

While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.

In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.

Is Moscow Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.

While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.
