Review: Well-danced ‘Chicago’ national tour worth a fresh look

The national touring production of "Chicago," in San Diego through Sunday, Feb. 18.

After a long absence from the San Diego Civic Theatre stage, the 1975 Kander and Ebb musical makes a welcome return

Some musicals don’t improve with age. But “Chicago,” the Kander and Ebb musical that turns 48 in June, seems to only get better.

A terrific touring production now playing through Sunday at the San Diego Civic Theatre has spectacular dancing and two strong performers in the lead roles. And the musical’s script — with its deep cynicism of American society and our fascination with celebrity culture and true crime — feels more relevant than ever.

When “Chicago” debuted in 1975, the show’s book — co-written by Fred Ebb and director-choreographer Bob Fosse — was not well-received by Broadway critics. They found the self-absorbed, fame-craving, unsympathetic characters very hard to love. But over the years, stage and television shows with deeply flawed central characters have become much more popular with American audiences.

For those not familiar with the story, it’s a dark look at Prohibition-era Chicago, where the sensationalistic press turns killers into superstars of the moment. Roxie Hart is a vain chorus girl who murders her lover, then competes for media attention with the other “merry murderesses” in a women’s prison, including vaudeville dancer and double-murderer Velma Kelly.

Katie Frieden holds up a newspaper in "Chicago."

It’s been many years since a “Chicago” tour has visited San Diego, but the popular musical has continued to pop up in local productions every few years. This sharp-looking touring production retains all of Fosse’s original choreography and his original staging concept, with a jazz orchestra onstage in a band riser and each song introduced as if it were a ‘20s-era vaudeville act.

Kailin Brown, who plays Velma, starts the show off with a bang, leading the company in a meticulously performed “All that Jazz.” Brown is a stunning dancer — tall, lithe and muscular — with a decent singing voice. Brown contrasts well physically and stylistically with Katie Frieden as Roxie Hart. Frieden isn’t quite as strong a dancer, but she’s a more natural and spontaneous actor with more nuanced vocals. Side by side, the redhead Freiden and the black-wigged Brown are like fire and ice.

The show’s supporting cast is good, if not as memorable as Brown and Frieden. They include Robert Quiles as Roxie’s sad-sack husband Amos; Connor Sullivan as Roxie’s greedy lawyer Billy Flynn; and Illeana “illy” Kirven as prison matron “Mama” Morton.

The ensemble and dance scenes are the highlight of the show and the 19-member company is jam-packed with strong dancers who faithfully re-create the show’s most memorable numbers, including “We Both Reached for the Gun,” “Cell Block Tango” and “Me and My Baby.”

It’s nice to see “Chicago” back at the Civic in such fine form.

ALL THAT JAZZ AND MORE

Bandstand, shining lights, and sexy murderers in lingerie. Chicago celebrates 25 years of razzle dazzle with this national tour featuring the original New York production directed by Walter Bobbie and choreographed by Ann Reinkingin the style of Bob Fosse. With the bandstand as the centerpiece of this City Center’s Encores! production, this national tour has all of Broadway’s glitz and glamor.

chicago national tour run time

This is a story as old as time. Roxie, a bored attention-craving housewife and small-time performer kills her lover Fred Casely in the heat of anger. Having failed to get her boorish but kind-hearted husband, Amos, to take the fall, Roxie lands in Chicago’s infamous Cook County jail with the possibility of being put on death row. Roxie meets Velma Kelly, a vaudevillian who spends her days plotting her return to stardom upon the expected acquittal of her own murder charge. The ensemble is complete with a buttery-voiced Matron “Mama” Morton, the well-connected queen bee who presides over the jail, and the greedy, sly, defense lawyer Billy Flynn. Pride, greed, jealousy, and, yes, murder are the name of the game in Chicago .

chicago national tour run time

Shimmy right on. The cast is fantastic, sexy, and talented. Our leads, Logan Floyd (Velma Kelly) and Katie Frieden (Roxie Hart), are both seasoned singers and actors. Their high kicks are on point, and their splits are perfectly flat. In addition to having legs that go all the way to Canada, their voices are strong and perfectly suited for their roles. I honestly could not remember the last time being genuinely enamored by national tour leads before this production. They are both phenomenal.

chicago national tour run time

A sleeper crowd favorite is found is Brian Kalinowski ‘s portrayal of Amos. The crowd cheered his every appearance on stage, almost without missing a beat. Towering over the whole cast, Brian stood out in all the beautiful ways with his humorous performance and jovial stage presence during “Mr. Cellophane.” Christina Well brought the house down with her performance of “When You’re Good to Mama.” I mean, that voice!! Enough said! The very handsome Jeff Brooks as Billy Flynn executes smooth dance moves, especially when accompanied by a fantastic dance ensemble. His techniques are solid, just like his portrayal of the egomaniac lawyer.

chicago national tour run time

I really have nothing to criticize in this production. Sound designer Scott Lehrer’s excellent work is cut in half because the cast uses good stage diction. What a novel idea! The band, led by a very charming director, Cameron Blake Kinnear , is fun, though occasionally really pushing the acceptability of tuning. Nevertheless, the band being the center of the set works well for storytelling and many pleasant kitschy moments.

chicago national tour run time

There is not much to it. It is entertaining as hell, and I would call musicals like this the equivalent of what the Fast and Furious series is for movies. You are not here for an evening of mental nourishment. Instead, you will be treated to camp, jazz licks, belting solos, and sexy dancers. So, go spend an evening and experience what Broadway is very good at.

chicago national tour run time

The cast also includes Michelle Attardo, Lincoln Belford, Cate Benioff, Megan Campbell, Tony Carrubba, Jess DiForte, Robert “Shapiro” Garris, Ed Gotthelf, Jasmine Janae, Tal Kedem, Liz Lester, Chase McFadden, Sammy Tuchman, Asher Van Meter, Evy Vaughan and James Vessell .

Review: 'Chicago' still very entertaining after all these years

Katie Frieden in 'Chicago,' which plays at the Kravis Center through Sunday.

“Chicago” is the musical theater version of the perfect little black dress; it’s reliable, it’s timeless, and its subtlety is what makes it a showstopper.

West Palm Beach is the first stop on the latest national tour of “Chicago,” where it is the season opener of the Broadway Series at Kravis Center.

With music and lyrics by John Kander and Fred Ebb, and book by Ebb and Bob Fosse, “Chicago” premiered on Broadway in 1975 and ran for more than 900 performances. The 1996 Broadway revival introduced a new generation to the 1920s tale of merry murderesses Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart, and their slick but charming lawyer Billy Flynn. The revival has run more than 10,000 performances and is still going strong. The show was further popularized by the 2002 film version, which won the Oscar for Best Picture.

Several of the characters in “Chicago” are based on real people, at a time when murder was a form of entertainment sensationalized in the press, and those accused of murder, especially attractive women, became celebrities. The all-encompassing desire for fame, even when achieved through an infamous act, is one thing that makes “Chicago” timeless.

More: Arts and culture season preview: What to expect in exhibitions and performances

This production of “Chicago” is everything one expects from the show, and more. The stripped-down set consists of a mostly bare stage, save for the band, which is arranged vertically in the center. Chairs are used as props. The cast is costumed in an assortment of black lingerie, short dresses, mesh shirts, hats, and suits, with some white shirts among the seductive wardrobe. The lighting is stark, with spotlight moments and the occasional punctuation of color.

The choreography by Ann Reinking in the style of Bob Fosse is understated and sexy, which was Fosse’s signature. A roll of the shoulder, a flick of the wrist, a thrust of the hip on a musical beat are the soul of subtlety and understatement, though they convey so much.

The leads have terrific voices and slay in their roles. Kailin Brown plays Velma Kelly, a singer and dancer accused of murdering her husband and sister. The way Brown’s athletic, lithe form slinks across the stage in “All That Jazz” and throughout the show is a marvel to watch. Katie Frieden brings sass and a unique charisma to Roxie Hart, a housewife who murders her lover. She shines in “Roxie,” her gleeful fantasy about fame. Connor Sullivan cuts a swath as Billy Flynn, and wows the audience with his ability to hold a note on “Razzle Dazzle.” Illeana Kirven plays Matron “Mama” Morton with gusto, and makes her solo, “When You’re Good to Mama,” all her own. Robert Quiles as Amos, Roxie’s cuckolded husband, gains the audience’s sympathy, especially, in the sad but funny “Mr. Cellophane.”

Although it’s set more than 100 years ago, “Chicago” remains sadly relevant in today’s celebrity and fame-driven culture. It’s a satiric commentary about what passes for entertainment, and, even after all these years, is still very entertaining.

“Chicago” runs through Sunday, at Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, 701 Okeechobee Blvd., West Palm Beach. For tickets and information, call 561-832-7469 or visit KravisCenter.org .

About this event

National Tour

If you are looking to experience the best sites, the best courses, and the best competition – either in preparation for Solo Nationals or to see where you stand against the best – The Tire Rack® SCCA Solo® National Tour is for you.

Known as "The Road to Lincoln,” each National Tour event is run in a similar format to the season-ending National Championships in Lincoln Nebraska. National Tour events prepare drivers for their National Championship and typically offer tougher competition than Regional autocross events.

These events average more than 275 drivers at each of the various locations across the country with most of the competitors coming from nearby states. These drivers come together to get a taste of the "Nationals" experience of competition and camaraderie.

National Tour competition takes place over two days with a different course each day, just like Solo Nationals. Drivers get three runs on each course with their best time from each added together for the final class standings. Runs are timed to 1/1000th of a second and knocking a cone down means a penalty of 2 seconds added to that time. All classes at National Tours are the standard Solo classes that you’ll find at Solo Nationals and in the SCCA in the Solo Rulebook.

SCCA Starting Line will be hosting a Starting Line Driver's Edge Experience at Route 66 Raceway in conjunction with SCCA's Tire Rack Chicago National Tour. This weekend-long experience is geared toward those new to National Tours. The SCCA Starting Line Driver’s Edge uses a team of successful autocross veterans who remember what it was like the first few times they pulled up to the starting line to make a run on the big stage of national-level competition.

In short, you’ll be given the tools and an explanation of the ins and outs of a Tire Rack National Tour event, arming you with the information to conquer the event without the intimidation factor that comes from doing something new. Our coaches will walk you through the event information page, talk about run/work assignments, teach you how the grid works, what to do at impound, and the information available to you at the driver’s information center.

Most importantly, our championship-level coaches will help you throughout the weekend, checking in to help answer any questions that come up, touching base in grid before your run heat, and providing support and encouragement along the way. Think of them as your big brother or big sister for the weekend!

There is  NO CHARGE  to take part in the Starting Line Driver's Edge Experience. If you are a driver that is new to National Tours, we encourage you to sign up and take part!

For more information about the Starting Line Driver's Edge, as well as other Starting Line programs, please contact Tracy Lewis at [email protected] .

Instruction will take place on the event's Test & Tune course and is a scaled-down version of their Phase 1 School. The program will net students a minimum of 12 runs with Evo's team of National-caliber instructors.  The Evo Advantage Driving School is not limited to Starting Line Driver's Edge participants, nor do you have to take part in both the School and the Driver's Edge programs if you do not wish.

The Evo Advantage Driving School is limited to 24 students and is $125.00. Two-driver cars are allowed, just make sure to enter the other driver's name in your entry when asked.

A love letter to The National at the start of its world tour

chicago national tour run time

If you are looking for a review, this isn’t it. This is an appreciation for a band that helped one of your best friends get through his divorce by listening to “Boxer” on repeat; a band whose music made your new city feel like home; a band whose songs helped you through one of the toughest times in your own life.

On Thursday, The National launched its tour with a four-night run at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago, opening with the quiet and gorgeous “Once Upon a Poolside” from its newest and ninth album “First Two Pages of Frankenstein.” You still saw the playful and charismatic lead singer Matt Berninger joking with the band, a powerful performance of "England" and a set that felt loose and comfortable, like you were just invited over to listen. But 20 years after they first hit the road, The National felt like it had grown up.

You don’t go see The National for stage theatrics or choreography, though you will enjoy the mesmerizing grainy video accompanying the show and Berninger’s dance moves that remind you he is a writer.

You go see The National because you love the band. If BTS has its Army, The National has its “sad dads,” a nod to its middle-aged band members and melancholy songs about angst and loss. And there were plenty of middle-aged men in their “Sad Dad” sweatshirts before the show, lining up to buy more band merch, but if you think that the grown-up hipster is the band’s only fanbase, you missed almost half the people at the show.

You go because even though you’ve seen The National play to much bigger crowds, and you know guitarist/writer/ frequent Taylor Swift collaborator Aaron Dessner played an acoustic version of “The Great War” in front of 66,000 people on her tour in Tampa , the band is at its best in a smaller venue. The Auditorium holds about 3,800 people.

You go because even though you heard a rumor that the band would play in its hometown of Cincinnati – and now your home – sometime this fall, you didn’t want to wait.

See photos from The National's Tour opener on its Instagram account

You go because Berninger is equally good with the lyrical “About Today” as he is at screaming “Graceless.”

You go because they make you feel young again. The band, who met in Cincinnati, formed in Brooklyn in the late 1990s. Now they feel like grown-up hipsters and you, too, have grown up, even if you were never hip. After 20 songs, the crowd still feels energetic and excited on its feet as they cheer for an encore just before 10 p.m., but most of them sit down for it, perhaps realizing we still need to get up for work tomorrow.

You go because while you had liked the band for almost a decade, you didn’t see them live until your second summer in Cincinnati, a place where I had moved with my then husband and four kids. That July night, before The National came on stage during the Bunbury Music Festival, a storm rolled and rain came down so hard, I thought they’d never play. Everyone was soaked.

And then there on the banks of the Ohio River, along with that friend who credits “Boxer” with surviving his divorce and his then new girlfriend, the skies cleared, the band took the stage. And somewhere between “Bloodbuzz Ohio” and “Mr. November,” I felt like I was home.

You go because these five guys, including two sets of brothers (Bryan and Scott Devendorf, Bryce and Aaron Dessner, and Berninger), have stayed together for two decades, through marriages, moves, and eight children. You go because somehow reading about Berninger’s depression in a beautiful piece in The New Yorker and the struggle to create the newest album is inspiring in the way you feel when you see people get through difficult things.

You go because three years ago you were writing a memoir about the hardest time in your life, including your mom’s suicide, and somehow listening to The National each night as you wrote, helped you hit your publisher’s deadline. “It takes an ocean not to break,” lyric from “Terrible Love” became a sort of mantra, and somehow writing about the worst part of your life helped make you better.

You go because sometimes you need to experience art to be inspired, because work is both exciting and complicated and maybe even weird right now, and life can feel heavy even in the best of times.

You go because you learned during the pandemic that there is nothing like hearing your favorite band with people who love them as much as you do. You go because hearing the songs that you wrote a book listening to, songs that helped your friend through the hardest of times, remind you of how much art matters. And that music can inspire and change you, too.

Review: COMPANY National Tour Presented by Broadway In Chicago

Marianne Elliot’s gender-swapped revival with a female Bobbie runs at the Cadillac Palace Theatre through November 12, 2023

pixeltracker

Director Marianne Elliot’s gender-swapped COMPANY centers on Bobbie, a 35-year-old single woman living in New York City with a chorus of married friends full of opinions about her relationship status. Stephen Sondheim ’s intellectually and emotionally stimulating musical originally focused on Bobby, an elusive bachelor who, for most of the show, seems reluctant to settle down. Based on a series of vignettes by book writer George Furth , COMPANY was a 1970 exploration of marriage and romantic relationships. While it’s since been sometimes accused of being dated, Elliot’s reimagining of the material makes it fresh and expands out the musical’s central theme to become a search for connection. This COMPANY is a touching portrait of one woman’s attempts to connect with her friends amid a bustling New York City, simultaneously a connecting and isolating place.

I think the switch from Bobby to Bobbie feels so entirely natural that it’s hard to imagine doing this musical just about any other way in 2023 (Elliot’s production debuted at the National Theater in 2018 before transferring to the West End and later to Broadway). This vision is brilliantly realized with book changes that help contextualize some of the key switches. Bobbie’s best friend, originally Amy, is now Jamie, who has a crisis on the day of his wedding to Paul. Although not all of the revised dialogue totally lands, overall the concept works, and most of Sondheim’s specific cultural references are preserved.

This ensemble is first-rate, and Chicago audiences will be especially excited to see James Earl Jones II as Harry (a great foil for Kathryn Allison as his wife, Sarah) and Ali Louis Bourzgui , who was phenomenal in the title role of THE WHO’S TOMMY at Goodman Theatre, as Paul — the Jamie’s fiancé (played by Matt Rodin — in the original production, Jamie was Amy). The ensemble nails their harmonies, particularly the disembodied chorus of “Bobbies” chiming in at the beginning of the show, and throughout, a representation of Bobbie’s liminal status.

As Bobbie, Britney Coleman is a mystery. But then again, that’s precisely the point. As originally written, Bobby was elusive and unknowable; oftentimes, he was a participant-observer of his friend’s actions. Here, Coleman makes Bobbie into a master of social monitoring, which is often culturally ascribed as a feminine trait. Bobbie’s a real empath as she shifts her mannerisms and behavior to accommodate her friends’ emotional revelations. She also has a soaring, crystalline voice with a pure tone that’s endlessly pleasant; Bobbie’s not an easy vocal part, but Coleman has a sense of ease about her. The catch, however, is that because Bobbie is so adept at social monitoring, she’s also unknowable to the audience. It’s hard to tell precisely what Bobbie wants, which is particularly keen in the show’s act one closer “Marry Me A Little.”

It’s in the moments leading up to “Marry Me A Little” that Coleman allows us to see what I think is closest to the true Bobbie. Fittingly, this depth of character is revealed during one of the show’s most fantastic moments. Elliot’s production, and this tour cast, absolutely nail the act one climax “Getting Married Today.” On the day of Jamie’s wedding, he has an anxiety-ridden breakdown as he contemplates pledging his “fidelity forever” to Paul. Rodin is divine as the frantic, frenzied Jamie, delivering his patter song at warp speed. Bourzgui is a magnificent foil for Jamie as the calm, patient, and loving Paul. Rodin and Bourzgui deliver a stunning contrast necessary to make the song work, along with a dynamite performance from Marina Kondo (who also plays Susan) as the song’s female soloist. Delightfully, Kondo keeps popping up in stranger and stranger places to deliver her verses. Also worth noting: I was drawn to Bourzgui in every single one of the group numbers in which he appears.

In what might be a millennial woman’s pipe dream, Bobbie has three men on her dating roster who seem surprisingly ready to commit. As Bobbie’s lovers Andy (originally April), PJ (originally Marta) and Theo (originally Kathy), Jacob Dickey , Tyler Hardwick , and David Socolar give an uproarious performance in “You Could Drive A Person Crazy” in which they opine about Bobbie’s mixed signals. Their harmonies are impeccable, and the antics are at a ten. It’s a specific, hilarious contrast to Bobbie’s more grounded and mysterious energy.

The vignettes with Bobbie and her suitors are also highlights. Dickey plays Andy as a well-intentioned but unintelligent soul, a flighty flight attendant if you will. Bobbie and Andy’s post-coital number “Barcelona” certainly lives up to its awkward, blustering energy. Hardwick plays PJ as full of verve and endless optimism about the possibilities of New York City, which he reveals in his solo “Another Hundred People” and in his wistful conversation with Bobbie. Socolar is warm and genuine as Theo, perhaps the most eligible of Bobbie’s suitors, though Coleman’s frantic energy in their exchange reveals her reticence about the connection. Even in these conversations, we see Bobbie as a social monitor; she’s a slightly different woman with each of the men she dates, and it’s unclear which one is the “real” Bobbie (if any).

While this staging reveals a deep understanding of COMPANY’s theme about the elusive search for connection, Bobbie’s final revelation that she might, after all, really want marriage, seems rushed. There’s a glimpse of it in the second act piece “Tick Tock,” which also now serves as an obvious reminder of Bobbie’s ticking biological clock.

While Bobbie’s older friend Joanne’s 11 o’clock number “The Ladies Who Lunch” is usually a hallmark of the show, here it’s presented with a rather light touch. Judy McLane handles the song vocally just fine, but it’s not the kind of bravura performance that’s been a staple of some past productions. Likewise, Joanne’s proposition that Bobbie sleep with her husband Larry doesn’t land quite right (in the original production, Joanne propositioned herself to Bobby).

It feels pivotal that Bobbie then poses the question “Who will take care of me?,” changed from “Who will I take care of?” in the original book, because that affirms traditional gender roles. But I wasn’t convinced that Joanne and Bobbie’s conversation set Bobbie down the path strongly enough for COMPANY’s stunning finale “Being Alive.” Coleman performs the number beautifully, and I have no quibbles with that. But in a musical that’s so deeply emotional and a meditation on human connection — or lack there of — I think the latter part needs higher stakes.

Undoubtedly, this COMPANY reminded me why this is an absolute masterpiece from Sondheim. It’s an intellectually and emotionally stimulating production. The show’s themes of longing for connection and the human desire to have someone see us for who we truly are are entirely present. I’ll drink to that!

The Broadway In Chicago engagement of the COMPANY national tour runs through November 12 at the Cadillac Palace Theatre, 151 West Randolph.

Caitlin Clark leads Iowa to 71-69 win over UConn in women's Final Four

Updated on: April 5, 2024 / 11:56 PM EDT / AP

Caitlin Clark led Iowa back to the national championship game, scoring 21 points as the Hawkeyes rallied past Paige Bueckers and UConn 71-69 in the women's Final Four on Friday night.

Next up for the Hawkeyes (34-4) is a rematch with unbeaten South Carolina, which lost to Iowa in last year's national semifinals. The Hawkeyes then fell short of winning the school's first championship, falling to LSU in the title game. Now Clark is one win away from bringing her home state its first women's basketball title in the final game of her college career.

After a rough opening 30 minutes because of a swarming UConn defense, the NCAA Division I all-time leading scorer finally got going in the fourth quarter.

Connecticut v Iowa

With the game tied at 51-all, Clark scored seven points in the first 2 1/2 minutes of the period to give Iowa a small cushion. UConn (33-6) got within 60-57 before the Hawkeyes scored six straight to take a 66-57 advantage.

UConn trailed 70-66 before Nika Muhl hit a 3-pointer after a steal with 39.3 seconds left to get the Huskies within one.

Iowa's Hannah Stuelke turned it over with 10 seconds left. UConn had a chance to take the lead, but Aaliyah Edwards was called for an offensive foul while setting a screen with 4.6 seconds left.

Clark made the first of two free throws before missing the second. Teammate Sydney Affolter got the rebound and UConn tied her up, forcing a jump ball. The possession arrow kept the ball with the Hawkeyes, who sealed the win by throwing the ball in the air to run out the final seconds.

Connecticut v Iowa

Stuelke scored 23 points to lead Iowa. Clark finished with nine rebounds and seven assists.

Bueckers and Edwards each scored 17 points for the Huskies, who were back in the Final Four after a one-year hiatus that ended their run of 14 straight seasons in the national semifinals. This might have been the best coaching job by Geno Auriemma. UConn had hopes of winning the 12th title in school history coming into the season, but those were quickly dashed by a series of injuries that sidelined nearly half of its roster.

But Bueckers, the national player of the year as a freshman in 2021 who returned to that form after missing an entire season and part of another with injuries, carried the Huskies back into title contention.

Connecticut v Iowa

UConn got going early behind Bueckers and stellar defense by Nika Muhl and her teammates, who swarmed Clark every time she touched the ball. The Huskies led by 12 points in the second quarter.

Iowa trailed by six at the half before getting going in the third quarter behind their star. She made her first 3-pointer of the game 2 minutes into the period, and then  her four-point play  got Iowa within one. The Hawkeyes then took their first lead later in the period right before Kate Martin got hit in the face by Edwards, resulting in a bloody nose. She ran off the court, leaving a trail of blood behind her.

Martin was back on the Iowa bench before they had finished cleaning the court. She then hit three big baskets down the stretch.

Clark had a tough first half, scoring six points while missing all six of her 3-point attempts. She barely got any open shots and at times looked frustrated. Iowa's coaches kept shouting words of encouragement to their generational player.

Even though she wasn't scoring, Clark kept the Hawkeyes in the game with six rebounds and four assists as the Hawkeyes trailed 32-26 at the break.

Immigration | New migrant shelter opening at Chicago’s St. Bartholomew Catholic Church

After months of delay , a new migrant shelter for families is opening at the shuttered St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Portage Park later this month, Mayor Brandon Johnson announced late Friday.

Johnson had said in January the city would not establish any new shelters amid a spat with Gov. J.B. Pritzker about the state’s role in directly providing housing for thousands of migrants who had arrived in Chicago in recent months, citing rising city costs. At the time, however, he left the door open to collaborations with faith and social service providers to run shelters.

Friday’s announcement noted the city would not incur any cost for the new shelter.

The Archdiocese of Chicago is leasing the space to the city, which is subleasing the school building and convent to the Zakat Foundation, a Bridgeview-based charity founded by Muslims to help address poverty internationally.

Zakat “will assume all operational costs, including logistics and staffing for the shelter,” according to a Johnson administration news release, while adhering to the city’s shelter operation guide. The charity will also coordinate with Chicago Public Schools to help enroll students.

Cook County is overseeing construction of shower facilities and other renovations to accommodate families there, according to the release, which did not disclose the cost of those renovations. The county pledged to contribute as much as $70 million this year to help cover the city’s cost of food and other expenses to respond to the migrant crisis.

“This initiative represents a remarkable example of what can be achieved when the public, private, and non-profit sectors collaborate towards a common goal,” Johnson said in the release. “My administration’s Office of Immigrant, Migrant, and Refugee Rights brought together an intergovernmental and an interfaith coalition to the table to work out this agreement.”

Zakat’s executive director, Khalil Demir, said the organization was “honored to assist the city of Chicago in this most important work of providing shelter for the refugee and the displaced, ensuring each family finds resettlement, retraining, new-language literacy, education, and earning through trade and jobs.”

In all, 38,624 individuals seeking asylum have arrived in the city since the beginning of the crisis, according to city data. 9,680 people were staying in shelters as of Friday. Another 84 people are awaiting placement. Johnson recently announced he would move asylum-seekers out of shelters that had been set up at a handful of Park District facilities across the city.

Other shelters in the city’s system are grappling with outbreaks of measles and a “small number” of confirmed tuberculosis cases , health officials separately confirmed Friday. The Chicago Department of Public Health declined to answer questions on the exact number of migrants with active cases or which shelters were affected.

When the city first unveiled plans to locate a shelter at the school in December, the city said it would have room for 300 to 350 people. The Friday release did not include the capacity of the shelter.

In all, the city and state are operating 21 shelters across Chicago. The city did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the delay between the planned January move-in and Friday’s announcement. The Sun-Times reported last month that the site was one of several the archdiocese had offered to the city over the course of a year.

Johnson called on President Joe Biden Thursday to create a streamlined work authorization process for both long-term immigrants in the U.S. without legal permission and recent migrant arrivals, the most recent demand that the federal government support the expensive and otherwise “unsustainable” response effort.

The focus on the estimated 450,000 long-term Illinoisans living in the U.S. illegally — the vast majority Chicagoans — is an effort to show that the city doesn’t need to choose between residents and new arrivals, Johnson said. “There are forces here that are looking to divide us. Not under my watch. There’s enough here for everyone,” he said.
