Plan a field trip to the History Fort Lauderdale and experience our various interactive educational programs! History Fort Lauderdale offers programs dedicated to the history of Broward County and Fort Lauderdale where students will be able to understand our rich cultural past through interactive modules. Interested in science? History Fort Lauderdale offers several science based hands on programs where students discover how history and science can be entwined during the learning experience. If you decide to join us at History Fort Lauderdale, each field trip participates in a tour of the main History Museum, the Pioneer House Museum, and the 1899 Schoolhouse Museum as well as the program(s) of your choice.

Hispanic Heritage: Grades 6th – 12th Students will engage and explore some of the primary source materials describing social and political circumstances surrounding the first European settlements in North America – right here in Florida – during the early 1500’s. This experiential adventure will capture the attention and interest of students and staff alike. Using interactive and inquiry-based learning methods, a visit with to History Fort Lauderdale is sure to open up a world of interest in the art and science prevalent at the time of our earliest Spanish speaking arrivals.

CSI New River: Grades 6th – 12th Explore a modern look at the Cooley incident on the New River through a forensic anthropologist and bio-archaeologist lens. Examine the events that led to the death of William Cooley’s family and their tutor Joseph Flinton. Learn how a forensic team would determine the cause of death among the Cooley family by the skeletal markers which are left behind for archaeologists to find. Discover how a CSI team collects and interprets evidence as well as how evidence is used in criminal cases.

Archaeology on the River: Grades 4th – 12th Students experience an interactive study on the pre-historic and historic archaeology of South Florida and the New River. They examine a South Florida archaeology site after participating in an overview of anthropology and archaeology. This is followed by an interactive simulated archaeology dig before working in teams to determine outcomes from analysis of the archaeological data.

Policies/Fees 

• The base program fee is $7.00 per student and $10.00 per parent/chaperone. There is no charge for school personnel.
• Groups are encouraged to send 50% of the payment at the time of reservation.
• Payments can be made by cash, check (made out to the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society, Inc.) or credit card.
• It is recommended that groups of more than 50 students be split between two or more days.The program lasts approximately 1-1/2 to 2 hours.
• Please arrive at the scheduled time.
• Please check in at the New River Inn located at 231 Southwest Second Ave.
• Cancellation policy: 72 hours notice is greatly appreciated.
• Suggestion: Pack a brown bag lunch for eating on the picnic tables near the New River. Some groups like to pack a pot-luck style lunch.
• The 1899 Replica School House is handicapped accessible, but the New River Inn Museum’s second floor and the King-Cromartie House are not.

Looking for a fun, engaging and creatively stimulating experience for your group.

S chedule your next group tour at the Art and Culture Center/Hollywood, located in Southern Broward County. The Center, which opened it's doors in 1975, offers critically acclaimed international and regional contemporary fine arts programming. Our exhibitions include diverse themes, featuring art in every medium from painting and sculpture to film, digital animation, photography, installation, and other mixed media. Experience accessible, contemporary art programs that delight and stimulate visitors of all ages. Bring your group or class in for an interactive experience.

Guided tours are generally 1 - 2 hours.

An activity may be added for an additional fee.

Group Admission

Group admission is $6 for adults, $3 for students and seniors. 

Payment:  Once your tour has been scheduled, an initial 50% deposit of the total group cost is required. Your deposit must be received by the Center within seven days of making your reservation in order to guarantee your tour date. A minimum of 10 people are considered a group. The balance due for your group is payable upon arrival at the Center on the date of your visit.

CURRENT EXHIBITIONS ON VIEW

Environmental Futures III: South Florida Women Artists brings together master and emerging women and non-binary artists, highlighting the concepts of environmental ecology, social ecology, and mental ecology, as referenced by Felix Guattari's book The Three Ecologies .

Somewhere I Belong is a transformative art installation showcasing the convergence of avatars from the Metaverse, Snapchat, and The Sims 4 within a mesmerizing, multi-dimensional AI-generated landscape. The installation becomes an expansive altar, inviting viewers to step into a larger-than-life, techno-spiritual experience. 

Workshops and Activities

Workshops are hands-on and geared for special tour groups to create a unique experience every time. The Art and Culture Center/Hollywood provides an incredible opportunity for visitors to explore their creative potential in an inspiring and encouraging space surrounded by contemporary art. The tour provides insight and activation into the materials and objects on view, offering an open and accessible path to the art around us.

Bonnet House Field Trips

Bonnet House Museum & Gardens located in Fort Lauderdale is one of the last native barrier island habitats in Florida.  Our historic 35-acre property hosts five unique environmental zones and provides plenty of curriculum-worthy experiences.  Our Education Department will schedule a Field Trip for your Group. Did you know that Broward County Teachers receive Complimentary Admission anytime?

Onsite Field Trips to Bonnet House Museum & Gardens, for Grades K-12, include tours of the House and Grounds.  Our Field Trip Staff immerse students in a memorable experience where the barriers of past and present disappear.  Conclude your visit by bringing a picnic lunch to enjoy beneath our heirloom fruit trees with views of local wildlife.

This huge outdoor learning environment includes our 100-year-old historic home built in 1920 by the Birch and Bartlett Families from Chicago.  Mr. Hugh Taylor Birch, a Fort Lauderdale Pioneer, studied all things Nature, while his daughter Helen was a Poet, Composer, and Fine Art Collector. Frederic and Evelyn Bartlett were American Artists and Muralists with eclectic styles.  With our own Curated Primary and Secondary sources, students integrate their classroom knowledge with real-life stories from the many people who lived and worked on the Bonnet House property.

Trek through a timeline from the Tequesta to the mid-twentieth century while learning about Florida History and Natural Science.  Study our extensive ecosystems, plant adaptations, and field observations.  Deepen an understanding of the diversity of wildlife and habitats between the Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal Waterway.

We offer FIELD TRIPS, CLASSROOM OUTREACHES and EXPERIENCES AT YOUR SCHOOL tailored for ALL age groups and grade levels. All programs integrate Florida Standards to support various curriculum needs for each grade level.

Lots of Dots: The Art of Yayoi Kusama

Discover the art of yayoi kuma and bring your own polka dot flowers to life..

For nearly a century, Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, lovingly named “the Polka Dot Princess” has enchanted the hearts and minds of art lovers young and old. Inspired by Kusama’s giant flower sculptures, students will create their own mixed-media polka-dot flowers. Included in the activity are STEAM based elements involving the parts of a flower.

Ceramic Pottery: History’s Tupperware

Explore ancient civilizations and create your own clay pots..

From the dawn of civilization, clay has played a pivotal role in the social, physical and technological development of humankind. From ancient clay writing tablets to decorated pottery, the art of ceramics has served an essential part in telling the story of humanity. Inspired by ancient pottery, students will create and decorate their own pinch pots using air dry clay (no kiln drying required). Included in the activity are STEAM based elements including the how clay is formed, the different varieties of clay and a brief history of the many uses of clay.  

Fossils: Digging Up The Past

Become a paleontologist and create your own clay fossils. you may even discover a dinosaur.

Fossils are the key to unlocking what the world was like hundreds, thousands or even millions of years ago. Fossils preserve the image of long extinct animals and plants, including dinosaurs.  Students will create and decorate their own clay fossils using air dry clay (no kiln drying required). Included in the activity are STEAM based elements including an introduction to paleontology, how fossils are made and where they are found.

No Strings Attached: The Art of Puppetry

Discover the magic behind the art of puppetry and build your own puppet..

One of the oldest known forms of storytelling, puppetry is the art of bringing inanimate objects to life. Miami puppeteer Pablo Cano continues this age old tradition with his own unique upcycled marionette creations made with found objects. Students will create and decorate their own puppets. Included in the activity are STEAM based elements including an introduction to history of puppets and the mechanics of building and manipulating puppets.

Water: Making a SPLASH!

Dive in and become inspired by the beauty of water..

Artists have always had a special connection to water. Water has inspired, sparked the curiosity and challenged the skills of generations of artists. Following that tradition, Miami based collaborative artists Nice’n Easy explore water as the subject matter of their sculptures and installations. Students will create their own water themed artwork. Included in the activity are STEAM based elements including an introduction to the importance of water as a natural resource and as a well as a source of creativity.

Mysterious Me! Mixed Media Masks

Learn about different cultures and make wearable art..

Learn about the rich tradition of crafting masks integral to storytelling and cultural expression for centuries. Students will design and decorate their own unique masks using a variety of materials. Gain insights into the historical significance of masks across different cultures. The activity seamlessly integrates S.T.E.A.M. elements by introducing students to the science and engineering behind mask construction, allowing them to explore the mechanics of creating and adorning these symbolic artifacts.

DIY Outreaches

Plan your next group outing to the florida everglades, field trips in the everglades.

Sawgrass Recreation Park is Broward County School Board approved for water-related activities. We host thousands of students and field trips every school year from Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties. Life vests are supplied for all children ages six years and under, as required by Florida law. Picnic areas are available for lunches, and bottled water can be purchased for your group at a discounted rate. We can accommodate large groups, and we have ample bus parking available.

We offer extended airboat tours and photo souvenirs at discounted rates for schools and we can even take care of lunch for your students and chaperones from The Gator Grill!

Explore a coastal barrier island and mangrove estuary at West Lake Park in Hollywood Florida!

Students become “Wildlife Biologists” as they spend an exciting day exploring the mangrove fringed shorelines and interconnected waterways at West Lake Park. On the protected mangrove lined waterways, students master the skills of canoeing and study the ecological relationships between coastal waters and mangroves. Students work in teams to collect water samples and predict what plants and animals live in these ecosystems.

Next, the field trip continues as students travel to Anne Kolb Nature Center. This 1,501-acre nature center became the largest in the Broward park system, a coastal mangrove wetland rich in plant and animal life, including threatened and endangered species. During an interactive wet-lab at Anne Kolb Nature Center, students put their hypotheses to the test as they collect and identify the invertebrates and fish that call the mangroves their home. In addition, students understand the significance of these coastal waterways and the interconnected uplands to the survival of the Native Americans and early settlers of this region.

Journey home, students reflect on the adventures in West Lake Park and the importance of mangrove estuary conservation! INSTRUCTORS ARE:

The Great American Bus Interactive Education, GABIE,  provides a STEM/Agriculture curriculum based mobile, interactive, educational bus and program that covers a multitude of standards that travels to your school.  Our in house bus and program houses displays of your state's primary Agriculture.  Students walk through their state's exciting colorful interactive world of STEM/Agriculture.  We have shadow boxes of different commodities that they can touch, read its educational importance and watch its purpose on our TV's.  We have our very own whisper mill that the students grind wheat seeds into flour. They learn about technology advancement from the 13 colonies to present day America.  We discuss Honey Bee's so they can see how they make honey by a chemical reaction and the importance of their role in our food supply and human survival.  * New Station... Our cooking field trips in Miami, FL are like nothing else students have ever experienced. Of course, there are all types of fun field trips in Miami, FL for your students, but our program may be the 1st time your students have the opportunity to have a hands on experience with food.

Many of the students who take part in our field trips walk away with a new appreciation of where food actually comes from. As you already know, there are countless benefits to having occasional field trips for your students. But, can you think of a better impression to make on your students than teaching them how to cook or bake nutritious, healthy meals they love?

Best for younger children, allergy concerns.

We do NOT use peanuts or peanut oil. Please notify us if any of the children that will be included in the Field Trip has any food allergies to flour, tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, strawberries, bananas, pineapple or chocolate. We are happy to accommodate special requirements. We want the whole field trip experience to be a safe and fun one for everyone involved!

One of our more popular menu items is the Pizza on a Stick. Your students will prepare their own pizza stuffed with mozzarella cheese and 2 toppings of their choice.

A healthy indulgence, the chocolate covered fruit skewers remains a popular choice with the kids. The light drizzle of healthy dark chocolate compliments the healthy fruit selection to make a perfect dessert choice.

Field Trip FAQs

Are you kosher, are you an approved vendor in broward county.

No. We are not an approved vendor in Broward county and have no plans to become approved in the foreseeable future.

Is this cooking field trip appropriate for my special needs students?

Yes. Not only is it an appropriate activity, we have found it to be one of the most gratifying for these students as well as for us! We have successfully worked with all levels of special needs students.

This will be our first field trip with The Real Food Academy and I have questions. Can I call and speak with someone?

Absolutely. Call Chef Arthur anytime with your questions. His direct number is 786-395-0355

The room we are using for the field trip is available to us for a limited time. How long will the event take?

The time needed for the event is affected by a number of different factors.

• The age of the children will affect the time needed. Younger children take longer then older children.
• The size of the group affects the time. Larger groups take longer then smaller groups.
• When we find the room with all the needed tables and chairs in place, that saves of time. If we don't have to gather tables and chairs from other rooms in the school we can save a lot of time.

That said, we can usually get the job done in time regardless of the above circumstances. We can simply work at a faster pace if needed. However, when there is a time limitation we appreciate knowing well in advance.

Is there anything I need to prepare before you arrival at our school or camp?

Yes. We always appreciate when the room is ready for us when we arrive. Please have the needed number of tables and chairs in the room where the event will take place. There is no need to arrange the table and chairs, just have them in the room.

I just booked my field trip and entered an "estimated" number of kids. The actual number of kids may be higher or lower. How will I be charged?

3 day's before your field trip you will receive an email from us requesting a final head count. If your "final head count" number is higher or lower, you can make the adjustment by replying to that email. If we do not receive an adjusted number, you will be billed according to the original number. If you supply us with a new number, the new number will be the amount you will be billed for.

I just booked my field trip. The only option for start time was 9am, but can I start at a different time?

Yes, your event can start anytime; whatever is best for you. We are only suggesting 9am as a start time as this time works best for most organizations. If you would like a start time before or after 9am please send an email request to [email protected] and follow up with a phone call to 786-395-0355 if a confirmation is not received within a few days of the requested change.

What age groups are included in the field trips?

Our field trips are open to boys and girls ages 3 through 14 who may be interested in exploring the culinary arts.

Do we need a kitchen for the field trip?

A kitchen is not needed. We can setup in any classroom, cafeteria, etc.

In every lesson, we will travel around the world and prepare traditional dishes utilizing healthy ingredients (the ones that are good for you!) We will be offering lessons on breakfast, brunch, lunch, snacks, and dinner preparation.

Our cooking field trips in Miami, FL are open to boys and girls ages 3 through 14 who may be interested in exploring the culinary arts. We also accommodate children under 3 years old when additional supervision is provided by the school, camp or organization.

We Provide Everything Your Students Need to Prepare the Meals!

Our mobile kitchen is equipped with everything your students will need to prepare succulent, healthy meals, including:

• All portable equipment – Convection ovens, electric pans, griddle, blenders, mixers, juicer, etc.
• Cooking utensils – Dishes, cups, spatulas, eating utensils, napkins, wet towels, cleaning supplies
• Ingredients – All food ingredients
• A Chef’s Hat for each child to keep for an extra $2 per child

Chocolate covered fruit skewers.

This fun activity will allow your child to make a fruit pattern using wooden skewers and fresh fruit (strawberries, bananas and pineapple). A fondue melted chocolate will be poured over the skewers (optional).
