Looking to get from Sayulita to Puerto Vallarta? Let me help! I live in Puerto Vallarta and visit Sayulita often – here are the best ways to get between these two beach paradises.

Sayulita is around 40 km (25 miles) from Puerto Vallarta’s international airport. At its core, it’s a small fishing town with a population of under 5,000.

That was, of course, until the surfers showed up. Then the day trippers. Then the yogis. And now the digital nomads…

It’s safe to say the secret is out about Sayulita, so don’t come here expecting some quiet, tranquil beach town.

As a top-rated day trip destinations, it gets quite busy here – especially on weekends and holidays.

Here’s an updated guide on planning a day trip to Sayulita from Puerto Vallarta to help you make the most of your time there.

How to get to Sayulita from Puerto Vallarta

You’ve got a few options for getting to Sayulita from Puerto Vallarta.

Drive from Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita

Renting a car isn’t just about getting from Point A to Point B; it’s about the freedom to explore.

When you rent a car, you’re not tied to bus schedules or beholden to taxi fares. Want to catch the sunrise at a secluded beach? You can. Feel like lingering in a café? No one’s rushing you.

Renting a car in Puerto Vallarta is easy, and it’s just an hour’s drive to Sayulita along the highway. The only issue is finding somewhere to park in town. I recommend parking further away from the main strip, otherwise you’ll end up doing circles looking for a spot.

Need a rental car? I use and love Discover Cars to find the best rates in Mexico!

Ride-sharing apps or taxi

Alternatively, you can always hail a cab or use ride-share apps. I recommend having both Uber and InDriver on your phone.

If you’re not familiar with the latter, it’s an app where you make an offer that drivers can accept or counter. You need cash for this, but it’s usually cheaper, and drivers get to keep more of their earnings.

You can also hire a local taxi driver to take you, but in my experience, they charge almost double what ride-sharing apps do.

Bus from Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita

local Bus from puerto vallarta to sayulita

If you’re heading there straight from the Puerto Vallarta Airport to Sayulita, you just need to walk across the bridge outside the airport, and you’ll be able to hop on a bus within minutes.

While the bus stops several times and various vendors and performers may hop on and off, that’s all part of the adventure. Plus, it gets you up there for just a few bucks (around 50 pesos).

If you’re already staying in the city, you can also catch a bus from downtown Puerto Vallarta. I’ve caught it just outside the HSBC bank in Versalles.

The buses list where they are going in the front of the window, so just look for Sayulita. If you aren’t sure, ask the driver when you get on.

Since the bus is a bit slower than driving, it takes about an hour and a half.

Sayulita tour from Puerto Vallarta

If you’re short on time or prefer a guided experience, a day tour to Sayulita from Puerto Vallarta could be your best bet.

With a day tour, there’s no need to worry about logistics. You get picked up, shown the highlights, and dropped back off. It’s travel made easy.

Traveling solo or looking to meet new people? Day tours are a great way to socialize. You’ll meet like-minded travelers and share a day of fun.

Plus, tour guides often share insights you won’t find in a guidebook. From the best street food to hidden gems, you’ll get the local lowdown.

Things to do in Sayulita

Surfing sayulita.

two girls surfing in sayulita

Surfing basically put Sayulita on the map, and that’s still the most popular activity here.

With plenty of surf schools and boards for rent along with smaller waves, this is a good place for beginners to surf near Puerto Vallarta. More advanced surfers may be a bit underwhelmed.

Relax on the beach

Sayulita Beach Bar

If that’s not your thing, there’s still a long stretch of beach to enjoy here. There are plenty of sun loungers that you can rent, as well as beachfront restaurants where you can use theirs as long as you’re a paying customer.

Since the main beach can get crowded with surfers, it’s nice to walk north to find a quieter stretch of la playa . You can even walk all the way to San Pancho . Just bring plenty of water and sunscreen.

We usually don’t make it past Club de Playa Camaron . This place drew us in the first time we visited and we go back every time to chill out and drink some cervesas .

You can also walk in the other direction past the cemetery to arrive at Playa de Los Muertos, not to be confused with the similarly named beach in PV .

There isn’t much going on here, so BYO whatever you may want to eat or drink and plop down in the sand.

Sayulita Beach Drone Picture

Those who feel like being more active have a few other options here. Climbing Monkey Mountain seems to be a popular hiking trail , but we haven’t gotten around to it yet. One of these days…

As I mentioned, yoga is pretty big here as well. There are a few different yoga studios in town, including Paraiso and Los Sueños . Yoga retreats and teacher training are also on offer in Sayulita.

Walk around town

colorful flags in sayulita

Other than that, just hang out and enjoy the vibe. The plaza always seems to have something going on, especially at night.

Walk around town to peruse the market and bohemian shops, stopping to check out the street art. Should you ever get thirsty or hungry, you’ve got plenty of options here. I’m dreaming of the fish tacos at Tacos Gaby and a cold beer at Yambak as I write this.

When night falls, there are a handful of fun bars and music venues to hang out in. We’ve had a great time at Atico with their swing seats and gypsy jazz band.

Sayulita Nightlife

Where to stay in Sayulita Mexico

For a small town, Sayulita has a wide variety of accommodations available if you want to stay longer than a day.

There are dorm rooms at backpacker hostels, romantic villas, luxury vacation rentals, and more. We even stayed in a tree house last time…

Treehouse in sayulita

On the budget end, La Redonda is a solid choice. Staying in one of their dorms allows you to meet other travelers and have more money for tacos and beer. And isn’t that what it’s really all about?

If you prefer a private room and a bit more mellow atmosphere, El Pueblito de Sayulita is worth a look. They have private rooms with balconies as well as a really nice pool.

And for those looking to splash out, Hotel Ysuri looks like a fabulous choice. Their infinity pool overlooking the main beach is the perfect spot to enjoy some good old-fashioned R&R.

Sayulita Art

Is Sayulita worth going to?

As with many small towns that attract a lot of attention, there have been some growing pains for Sayulita.

It’s tough to accommodate everyone who wants to visit this Pueblo Magico (Magical Village), as there really isn’t much room for it to grow.

While it’s definitely not a sleepy little fishing town anymore, there’s still plenty that’s magico about this pueblo once you dodge the golf carts and influencers.

While it’s true that Sayulita’s narrow, cobblestone streets are often clogged with golf carts, and it can be a bit chaotic, it’s still a fun place to visit.

Surfing, hiking, yoga, and beach bumming occupy the days here, while evenings are for live music, bar hopping, and of course, delicious tacos, ceviche, and more. There’s a reason it has become so popular!

And for all you digital nomads, there are a few coworking spaces if you need to work a bit.

Selina offers day passes, or you can try to work from the cafe. Tabachines is where we posted up when we had to punch in for a few hours.

What is Sayulita known for?

Sayulita is known as a surfing destination, but there’s so much more to this town! It boasts a beautiful colorful market (one of my favorite places in Sayulita), some less-explored beaches, and hiking trails within a quick drive. It’s easy to see why Sayulita has become an international favorite, and even though it can feel a bit too touristy and crowded, it’s full of charm and magic.

Many also say Sayulita is home to some of the best beaches in Mexico . If you are a beach bum, you don’t want to miss this place!

How far is Puerto Vallarta from Sayulita?

Sayulita is 28 miles (38 kilometers) away from Puerto Vallarta.

How long does it take to get from Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita?

It takes between 50 minutes to 1 hour from Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita depending on traffic and your type of transportation. If you take a bus, it will take you longer. Uber to Sayulita will be considerably faster than a public bus, but it will also cost more. Choose what works best for your travel plans and your budget 💵

How to get from Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita: a detailed overview

Renting a car in Puerto Vallarta is a great way to visit many nearby towns, but you can also get around by Uber, specially if you want to visit Sayulita

Getting from Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita by rental car

The easiest way to get to Sayulita is by renting a car . This way, you can travel at your own pace without worrying about public transportation and also visit other beach towns in Rivera Nayarit. I recommend DiscoverCars , my favorite platform for renting cars in Mexico and other countries that offers flexible rates and great inventory.

Find Your Rental Car

✅ You can rent a car at Puerto Vallarta Airport after landing, and drive to Sayulita. Read my complete guide to renting a car in Puerto Vallarta to avoid mistakes and save money!

Puerto Vallarta Airport to Sayulita

The drive from Puerto Vallarta Airport to Sayulita is pretty straightforward. All you need to do is exit the airport and drive under the drive to get across to another side of the highway.

Take the highway toward Bucerias, a town in Nayarit about 20 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta, where you can find many supermarkets and convenience stores. Continue north toward Sayulita and follow the signs. It’s an easy drive.

Check my complete guide to renting a car in Mexico to save money and avoid the worst tourist mistakes.

Is it safe to drive from Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita?

Yes! The drive is safe and will take you from busy Puerto Vallarta through the lush jungles on Nayarit.

Taking Uber is the fastest way to get from Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita

Getting from Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita by private transfer

If time is short and you care about convenience, hire a private transfer from Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita . A private transfer can pick you up at the airport and drop you off at your hotel in Sayulita. It’s a good option if your Spanish skills are limited and you don’t feel comfortable getting on a public bus or haggling the price.

Why take a private transfer?

When you arrive at the airport, a driver will meet you in the arrivals area. They will hold a piece of paper with your name and typically speak at least basic English. Booking a private transfer to Sayulita is the most hassle-free option if you don’t want to deal with all the logistics and want to relax after a long flight.

Taking a private transfer is a great option for those travelers who don’t have a lot of time and want to get their hotel quickly without dealing with all of the public transportation.

Bus from Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita

You can catch a regular bus from Puerto Vallarta airport.

All you need to do is walk across the footbridge outside the Puerto Vallarta Airport, and find the bus stop. Buses to Sayulita typically have the big letters “Compostela” on them and have a sign on the windshield that says Sayulita.

How much is the bus from Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita?

The bus to Sayulita from Puerto Vallarta costs $2 USD, but be prepared for a longer drive, as these buses make frequent stops. And, while they have a set schedule, they don’t always stop at Puerto Vallarta’s airport. When you see one of these buses, just flag them down, so you don’t have to spend the next 10-15 minutes waiting for another one.

Getting from Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita by taxi

If you have traveled around Mexico, you probably noticed that not every airport allows Uber. This is also the case with Puerto Vallarta. Only licensed taxis are allowed to pick up passengers at the airport in Puerto Vallarta, which is good news for those travelers who have safety concerns.

How much is a taxi from Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita?

A taxi from Sayulita can cost anywhere between $40 to 70 USD. It can be pretty expensive if you travel by yourself, but if you have a few friends with you, you can all split the cost of the trip.

PRO TIP: Speaking Spanish will be a huge bonus if you want to take a taxi or Uber from Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita. You can haggle and lower the price and chat with your driver or ask a question. Speaking from personal experience, being able to communicate in Spanish can change your entire experience. That’s why learning Spanish is one of my top travel tips for Mexico .

Best hotels in Sayulita

Getting from Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita by Uber

Getting to Sayulita from Puerto Vallarta by Uber is cheaper, but it requires some knowledge.

For starters, not all cities in Mexico have Uber. For example, you will not find Uber in Cancun or anywhere in Quintana Roo, or many towns along the Oaxaca Coast like Puerto Escondido , Mazunte , or Bahias de Huatulco.

You can catch Uber at Puerto Vallarta’s Airport, but since Uber is not allowed to pick you up at the airport, you will need to cross the footbridge (just like when you have to take a bus), and look for an Uber stop.

How much is Uber from Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita?

Uber in Mexico is considerably cheaper than in the United States, and you will most likely spend between $25 to 40 USD on your trip to Sayulita. The downside of taking Uber is that you will have to carry all your luggage across the bridge, which is not a very convent, so it’s better to pack light.

Is it safe to take Uber in Puerto Vallarta?

Yes! Taking Uber from Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita is safe.

I know that some travelers have questions about it because of all the negative coverage Mexico gets in the news, but based on my personal experience and advice from fellow travelers, taking Uber in Mexico is much safer than taking a taxi, which is sometimes operated by professional criminals, especially in bigger cities like Mexico City and Guadalajara .

Is there Uber in Sayulita?

There’s no Uber in Sayulita, but there are plenty of taxis that can take you to many places in the region. Uber works only if you need to get outside of Sayulita to places like Bucerias , Punta Mita , or San Pancho (a neighboring town that is a perfect getaway from Sayulita).

Still, finding Uber in Sayulita is not an easy task, and if you get one, you are very lucky!

Do I need to tip my driver when taking Uber from Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita?

Whether you want to tip your Uber driver after arriving to Sayulita is up to you. Although it’s not required, you can leave a custom amount through the Uber app, or give a cash tip when you exit the vehicle.

Since Uber prices in Mexico are much lower than in the United States,Canada or Western Europe, leaving 20-30 Pesos for your driver is a great idea.

✅ Read my complete guide to tipping in Mexico to know how much you should leave in gratuities.

Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita with a guided tour

If you are spending your vacation in Puerto Vallarta, but still want to visit Sayulita, join a guided tour. This is a perfect option if you want to spend no more than a day in Sayulita, but don’t have a care rental and don’t want to deal with public transportation.

How to get from Puerto Vallarta Airport to Sayulita?

The best way to get from Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita is by renting a car. Another option is to catch a taxi (which would be the most expensive option for a one-way trip to Sayulita) or get an Uber.

How to get from downtown Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita?

The easiest way to get from downtown Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita is by taking an Uber. This will cost you more than taking a public bus, but it will be much faster. Since Uber is allowed in Puerto Vallarta, your Uber driver can pick you up right outside of your hotel.

Sayulita is a pueblo mágico and is one of the most popular beach towns in Mexico that is famous for its surfing.

Tips for traveling to Sayulita:

  • Carry cash – Whenever you travel around Mexico, always carry cash with you. This is one of my top tips for Mexico travel. Many stores, restaurants, and street vendors only accept cash.
  • Learn some Spanish – Speaking Spanish is a game changer for your trip to Sayulita! When you speak the language, it’s much easier to communicate, buy tours, book hotels and do many other things.
  • Slow down for topes – Topes are speed bumps that are very common on many roads in Mexico. They can be tall and if you hit them at full speed, you can damage your car.
  • Have your documents ready – checkpoints are not uncommon on Mexico’s roads. Always have your documents ready in case you get stopped.
  • Stop for some fresh fruit and roadside snacks (yum) – Don’t forget to stop for some yummy treats and fresh fruits that are sold on the side of the road around many towns in Mexico.

Yes, Puerto Vallarta is a safe place for families to visit on vacation. Because it is a big tourist place, the beaches are protected and kept clean and secure for everyone. Like always, make sure to be cautious and know your surroundings, and you’ll be good to go!

These 18 activities are some of the best things you can do together as a family when visiting Puerto Vallarta with kids. Choose one of these, or create a list and get as many as you can during your vacation. What adventure do you want to do in Puerto Vallarta as a family?

What to Do in Puerto Vallarta with Family

1. stroll the malecón.

The Malecón Boardwalk is the center of Puerto Vallarta and stretches along the waterfront. It is filled with street vendors selling trinkets and souvenirs, restaurants, and entertainment. It’s the perfect for kids to enjoy.

This is a place to walk with your family to see everything downtown Puerto Vallarta has to offer. It is also a great place to take beautiful pictures with many sculptures and backgrounds to enjoy.

You will find delicious foods to try, such as shrimp on a stick, and tons of stores to get all your shopping done in one place.

One of the best things to do in the Malecón is free! You can watch street performances as you walk around. Some have seen Voladores de Papantla where these men “fly” everywhere in circles across the street. It’s a pretty amazing thing to watch!

Don’t miss an opportunity to wander the parallel side streets where you will find street art and the beautiful Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This is a famous church in Puerto Vallarta and definitely worth a quick detour.

2. Day Trip to Las Caletas with Vallarta Adventures

Another fun family adventure at Puerto Vallarta has to include Las Caletas. Go explore a beautiful beach hideaway with a day trip with your family. With Vallarta Adventures , you can enjoy the day out at sea with their boat tour.

Las Caletas is one of four beaches that are only accessible by boat. This is quite the adventure as you can paddleboard, kayak, snorkel, take cooking classes, have animal encounters, and so much more. With all of the activities on this beach, kids of all ages will enjoy something, especially the kids’ adventure park.

At the kids’ adventure park, your kids can enjoy a zip line, face painting, riding a donkey, and so much more. If you are traveling with teens, you will also find a teen adventure cove filled with waterslides, a banana boat, and obstacle courses.

If parents want some downtime, don’t miss an opportunity to get a massage while you’re there. You can sign up on the boat and it is 100% worth it!

3. Canopy River Zip Line

If you want an adrenaline-filled adventure as a family, you will love the Canopy River Zip Line . You will fly over through the Sierra Madre mountains and see the river as you fly down the line. At this location, there are 11 zip lines, and at the last zip line, you can dive into the river.

Along with the zip line, you will tour the gardens with a nature walk riding on a mule. There is also an infinity pool to enjoy at the end of your tour. This zip line adventure takes about two hours in total. This fun family adventure is only for children over six years old.

4. Parasailing

There are plenty of opportunities for parasailing along Banderas Bay in Puerto Vallarta. Children nine and older will love flying through the sky and taking in all the beauty of the ocean. Sometimes you might even see some dolphins.

If you’ve never gone parasailing before, this is a must-have activity; you will not see anything more beautiful than Puerto Vallarta while flying.

5. Eco-Adventure Islands

The Marietas Islands are another fun place to go exploring with kids in Puerto Vallarta. These islands are protected and safe for families. The eco-adventure islands tour goes at your own pace and allows you to snorkel, paddleboard, kayak, just about anything you want to do. You will be able to see sea turtles, stingrays, and even some humpback whales. Enjoy the natural beauty Puerto Vallarta offers with your kids at the Marietas Islands.

6. Day Trip to Sayulita

There are many day trips from Puerto Vallarta that can be booked through tour companies, but consider renting a car and heading to Sayulita with your family. This is a very laid-back town where you can enjoy time at the beach or strolling through town. Sayulita is a great place to escape the busy city and just enjoy some downtime. This can be much needed when traveling with kids!

You can windsurf, snorkel, do some yoga on the beach, or get a massage here. Other fun activities to include in your day trip to Sayulita with your kids are to go horseback riding, whale watching, kayaking, surf lessons, and so much more. There is something for everyone to enjoy in Sayulita.

7. Pirate Cruise

What child wouldn’t love a Pirate Cruise ? You can enjoy many fun pirate ship tours, whether you choose a day trip for lunch or a night ride with some delicious dinner. You will find a real pirate ship that is a replica of the Santa Maria ship. This cruise is filled with music, action, shows, food, and more.

8. Cooking Class

If you are traveling with older kids who love to cook and eat delicious Mexican food, there are plenty of fun cooking classes in Puerto Vallarta . You will learn how to cook an authentic Mexican dish that is absolutely delicious!

Many of the cooking classes take you to the local market where you can experience purchasing your food just like the chefs. Then, together as a family, you will learn step by step how to cook whatever dish you choose. This would be a great bonding experience on your trip.

9. Spend the Day at the Beach

Of course, you will want to spend plenty of time at the beach with your family. In case you want to leave the beach at your Puerto Vallarta resort and explore other areas, these are some of the best beaches in Puerto Vallarta for kids:

Playa Los Muertos

Los Muertos Beach is one of the top tourist attractions in Puerto Vallarta, so it will be crowded. However, this means it also has tons of things to do and places to eat nearby. You can enjoy delicious food vendors right on the beach, along with some great photo-op locations and a gorgeous beach for swimming.

Conchas Chinas Beach

This beach is more secluded and relaxing. The way this beach sits, it is almost entirely wave-free, which is great for little ones. This beach is also protected and cleaned regularly to make it safe.

Nuevo Vallarta Beach

Nuevo Vallarta Beach is another great family-friendly beach in Puerto Vallarta with things everyone will love to do. It has soft sand, it’s a wide beach, and has medium waves which are great for boogie boarding and surfing.

10. Whale Watching

If you plan to visit Puerto Vallarta between December and March, you must go whale watching as a family. You can see amazing humpback whales here and even baby humpback whales too. There are many whale watching tours you can go on, but you might be able to see them from the beach as well!

11. Vallarta Botanical Gardens

The Vallarta Botanical Gardens is another beautiful and relaxing place to visit with kids. Here you can enjoy some downtime in nature. You can see all the beautiful native Mexican plant species.

Explore the garden and forest at your own pace, or you can go on a guided tour. They also have a restaurant with delicious authentic food to enjoy as well. Kids under the age of four get free admission.

12. ATV Puerto Vallarta tours

If you love riding ATVs, go on a fun ATV tour in Puerto Vallarta . Zoom through the forest on a dirt trail in this one-of-a-kind adventure. These tours allow you to go at your own pace and have a tour guide to lead you along the way.

You will also have the chance to do a little bit of hiking if you want and find a hidden natural pool to dip in the water for a bit too. This is an experience you will definitely want to try with your family.

13. Vallarta Food Tours

Puerto Vallarta is all about food. While you can enjoy many of the delicious things this city has to offer, going on a food tour will allow you to savor everything this city has to offer. From learning about the best local food spots to untouristed places, you can learn and enjoy it all. If your family loves food, definitely sign up for a food tour!

14. Los Arcos National Marine Park

One of the best places to visit in Puerto Vallarta with kids is the Los Arcos National Marine Park. Here you can enjoy the five granite islands in the middle of Bandera Bay.

This is the perfect spot to get some stunning family pictures with the islands as your backdrop. Take a snorkeling tour and you will find caves and tunnels to explore along with amazing ocean wildlife.

15. Las Animas Adventure Park

At Las Animas Adventure Park , you will find zip lines and obstacle courses as you spend the day flying through the forest in Vallarta. This is definitely a family spot in Puerto Vallarta you don’t want to miss.

Kids of all ages will love climbing through rope bridges and flying from tree to tree. You can easily make this a day trip from Puerto Vallarta.

16. Choco Museo

Chocolate lovers will enjoy this museum! At Choco Museo , you will learn all about chocolate and delicious Mexican creations that use chocolate. The museum is free to go and explore, but they also offer tours. Kids can have a mini chocolate cooking class to enjoy or learn how to make truffles as a family!

17. Aquaventuras Water Park

Aquaventuras Water Park is one of the best things to do in Puerto Vallarta with kids. Kids can enjoy going down waterslides or swimming with the dolphins. There are also fun playgrounds and zip lines. Kids of all ages will love coming here, and you will make so many fun memories together!

18. Horseback Riding

Horseback riding is another fun family adventure to do while you are visiting Puerto Vallarta with kids. This horseback riding tour is a unique experience, not quite like any other horseback riding trip you’ve done in the past. You will horseback ride through the mountains together and end up at a waterfall where you can swim and cool off.

tours from puerto vallarta to sayulita

My wife and I are taking our daughter (18 years old) on a laid back Spring Break trip next year. My wife and daughter's only goals are to get sun and they want massive beach time. The beach and heat are good for me as well to relax and get away from work. We want to be gone for one full week.

1. If I want to add in some serious walking, is this beach long enough? I know zero of the area.

2. If my daughter were to bring her classmate, would the the two of them survive a week? I think this is a slam dunk yes, but would love to hear from other teenage parents

3. I am thinking of splurging a bit and getting the swim up room. Is this worth it or are there drawbacks I haven't thought of?

We don't need nightlife or anything over the top, just a really nice place, cold beverages, and good customer service with a sweet beach. Have I picked the right place?

I appreciate you TA experts!!

There isn't any serious walking on the beach at Hyatt Zivza but it is perfect for sunbathing and chilling.🥰 It is a lovely beach vacation situation! 😎

tours from puerto vallarta to sayulita

AThe beach and location are gorgous, lots of palapas to chill. As mentioned, not a long walking beach 10 minutes there and back total. We had a club swim up and it was amazing!!! We used it day and night. You have abutton you can push to get food and drink service in your swim up, loungers, it was great. We would go to the beach in the morning for the day and then afternoons/evenings in the swim up.

Not tonnes of action, but old town is a short Uber/taxi, but away to break up the days if you like.
