“We had a wonderful few days & everything more than met our expectations. The accommodation in Amiens & Ypres was very good, especially Ypres as it was on the main square & only a short walk to the Mennin Gate. The tour itself was very informative & we had more than enough time to spend at the memorials etc. We were able to find my Great Uncle’s headstone at Tyne Cot cemetery which was quite an emotional moment for me. A really good, but very sobering day. Such loss of so many young lives. We have told many people of our experiences & have no hesitation in recommending your company to any one who might be considering visiting that area of France & Belgium.” Denise Eastley

“Our 1 day private Western Front Tour with Rod Bedford from The Battlefields Experience was just fantastic. I’m so glad I went for that option and I would highly recommend it for anyone in a similar situation i.e. wanting to ‘follow in the footsteps’ of a grandfather and more.  Rod was just great. I had a bundle of my grandfather’s details from the Australian War Memorial & National Archives and a book on the 14th battalion. Rod had  huge amounts of general, specific and local knowledge.

He managed to pass on big picture info and explain all sorts of where/what/why stuff about particular battles and how events moved and changed and right down to all sorts of interesting and funny tidbits. And he seemed genuinely interested in granddad’s stuff and trying to piece together all sorts of stuff and to give me specific insights and suggestions on how to research some things further. And he was just such good company, chatting about all sorts of random stuff with both me and my 13 yo daughter.

So it really was a memorable experience for us both. I just wish it had been longer and I would love to go back some time and spend another day or two with Rod as my guide. Diana Kervin

Duty nobly done battlefield tours, australia's western front, travel back in time to follow the footsteps of our diggers across the western front. walk the ground of australia’s most defining moments of the first world war..

Duty Nobly Done Battlefield Tours is an Australian owned and operated battlefield tour business dedicated to providing guests with an engaging and memorable experience of the First and Second World War battlefields and other heritage sites in France & Belgium.

Spoecialising in the Australian experiences on the Western Front in the First World War, we follow the Anzac battalions across the very ground they fought on, and tell the stories of those courageous soldiers. Guests will get a real sense of not only where and how the battles unfolded, but the personal cost.

The many beautifully maintained cemeteries that dot the landscape give mute testimony to the tremendous bravery and sacrifice of the soldiers of many nations who clashed on the battlefields of France and Belgium.

As we cover most, if not all Australian battlefields, every effort will be made for an opportunity to visit your fallen soldier’s grave and pause for reflection. If they have no known grave, our extensive research will uncover where they fought their last battle so you can walk that sacred ground.

Each guest embarks on a pilgrimage to the Western Front battlefields for reasons they may not yet be able to understand beyond some sense of that restless Anzac Spirit passed down by their relatives. It will be different for each person and we believe that you will find what you are looking for with Duty Nobly Done Battlefield Tours.

“We have no hesitation in giving you a 10/10, and highly recommend Mat McLachlan Battlefield Tours. Adrienne & Graham Buttner Bombing of Darwin Anniversary Tour I really enjoyed the tour it was enjoyable, entertaining and informative, could not have asked for anything better. Jack Thomason Bombing of Darwin Anniversary Tour Amazing!  My sister and I visited the Western Front and experienced a one day private tour on the Ypres Salient and also a one day private tour on the Somme. As I go through my photographs of the 3 weeks we spent in Europe, it is these 2 days that I keep coming back to and would class as the highlight of the trip. The information provided was first class, the effort to locate some of our ancestors who did not make it home was very much appreciated and the whole experience was extremely moving.

I know that these 2 days will stay with me forever.

Absolutely incredible!

Erdem as guide, Roachie as our historian and Zafir as our fearless bus driver.

I would like to recommend highly the Western Front Battlefields Tour.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the tour. The whole experience was one I will remember.

The Tour Guide was very knowledgeable and approachable. The facilities were amazing.

I have been in complete awe of the service and experience from Mat McLachlan tours.

Not only was my family and I reassured about our safety from the moment we booked but we knew we were in safe hands the moment we started the tour.

Experience the Anzac Day Dawn Service at Gallipoli

Anzac day marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by australian and new zealand forces during the first world war. although this military campaign at gallipoli failed in its objectives, the actions of the australian and new zealand troops left us all a powerful legacy. gallipoli is seen to many as the birth place of what has become known as the "anzac legend" and the identity of both nations. in 1916 the date, 25th april was officially named anzac day..

Many thousands of people now make their way each year to the Gallipoli Peninsular for the Anzac Day Dawn Service to pay their respects to those that gave so much. It is a very special and moving experience. Most people will make their way to the Gallipoli Peninsular for the Anzac Day commemorations as part of a tour group. Tour companies today offer the easiest, best and most comprehensive way of getting the most out of your visit to Gallipoli.

Anzac Day Commemorations 2024

Important attendance pass registration, anzac day gallipoli tours 2024, anzac day gallipoli tours 2025, 100% aussie/kiwi owned and operated, history of anzac day, anzac day - 25 april - is probably one of the most important national occasion for australia and new zealand but why this day special to australians and new zealanders.

When war broke out in 1914 Australia had been a federal commonwealth for only 14 years. The new national government was eager to establish its reputation among the nations of the world. In 1915 Australian and New Zealand soldiers formed part of the allied expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula to open the way to the Black Sea for the allied navies. The plan was to capture Constantinople (now Istanbul), the capital of the Ottoman Empire and an ally of Germany. They landed at Gallipoli on 25 April, meeting fierce resistance from the Turkish defenders. What had been planned as a bold stroke to knock Turkey out of the war quickly became a stalemate, and the campaign dragged on for eight months. At the end of 1915 the allied forces were evacuated after both sides had suffered heavy casualties and endured great hardships. Over 8,000 Australian soldiers were killed. News of the landing at Gallipoli made a profound impact on Australians at home and 25 April quickly became the day on which Australians remembered the sacrifice of those who had died in war.

Although the Gallipoli campaign failed in its military objectives of capturing Constantinople and knocking Turkey out of the war, the Australian and New Zealand actions during the campaign bequeathed an intangible but powerful legacy. The creation of what became known as the "ANZAC legend" became an important part of the national identity of both nations. This shaped the ways they viewed both their past and future.

Early commemorations

The date, 25 April, was officially named ANZAC Day in 1916 and was marked by a wide variety of ceremonies and services in Australia, a march through London, and a sports day in the Australian camp in Egypt. In London over 2,000 Australian and New Zealand troops marched through the streets. A London newspaper headline dubbed them "The knights of Gallipoli". Marches were held all over Australia in 1916. Wounded soldiers from Gallipoli attended the Sydney march in convoys of cars, attended by nurses. For the remaining years of the war, ANZAC Day was used as an occasion for patriotic rallies and recruiting campaigns, and parades of serving members of the AIF were held in most cities.

The Dawn Service

The Dawn Service observed on ANZAC Day has its origins in an operational routine which is still observed by the Australian Army today. During battle, the half-light of dawn was one of the most favoured times for an attack. Soldiers in defensive positions were, therefore, woken up in the dark, before dawn, so by the time first light crept across the battlefield they were awake, alert, and manning their weapons. This was, and still is, known as "stand-to". It was also repeated at sunset.

After the First World War, returned soldiers sought the comradeship they felt in those quiet, peaceful moments before dawn. With symbolic links to the dawn landing at Gallipoli, a dawn stand-to or ceremony became a common form of ANZAC Day remembrance during the 1920s; the first official dawn service was held at the Sydney Cenotaph in 1927. Dawn services were originally very simple and followed the operational ritual. In many cases they were restricted to veterans only and the daytime ceremony was for families and other well-wishers. Before dawn the gathered veterans would be ordered to "stand to" and two minutes' silence would follow. At the end of this time a lone bugler would play the Last Post and then concluded the service with Reveille.

At Gallipoli

On Anzac Day in 1985, the name "Anzac Cove" was officially recognised by the Turkish government. Back then the Anzac Day services were very small affairs and held at the Ari Burnu Cemetery within the cove. From the mid 1990s the number of mainly young backpackers who made the annual pilgrimage grew and grew until 1999 when the number of people attending forced authorities to make another site. A purpose built "Anzac Commemorative Site" was constructed nearby on North Beach in time for the 2000 service.

Over the years, ANZAC Cove beach has been degraded by erosion, and the construction of the coast road from Gaba Tepe to Suvla, originally started by Australian engineers just prior to the evacuation of ANZAC in December 1915, resulted in the beach being further reduced and bounded by a steep earth embankment.

In 2003 the Australian government announced that it was negotiating with Turkey to place Anzac Cove on the National Heritage List, which included Australian sites such as the Eureka Stockade gardens. However this request was dismissed by the Turkish government as the Gallipoli peninsula itself is Turkish territory and already a national park in the Turkish National Park System.

Commemorating Anzac Day

As Anzac Day 2024 approaches, final arrangements are being made at commemorative sites in Australia and around the world, as we prepare to remember the contributions all service men and women have made for more than a century since the First World War. On Anzac Day, all Australians are encouraged to reflect on this, whether as part of a commemorative service overseas, or in Australia.

The Australian War Memorial will once again host the national Dawn Service, which will be telecast live on ABC TV and streamed via DVA’s Facebook page .

Returned Services League of Australia (RSL) and other ex-service organisations, as well as state and territory governments, organise Anzac Day services throughout the country. You can find out about local services by getting in touch with your local RSL sub-branch or visiting the Anzac Day page on the RSL Australia website .

A number of Australian War Cemeteries and Gardens of Remembrance hold Anzac Day services. Please check the Commemorations page on the DVA website for up-to-date information.

If you are planning a commemorative service, or choosing to commemorate Anzac Day at home, the Department of Veterans’ Affair’s (DVA) digital kitbag of printable materials can help. The kitbag includes speeches, Orders of Service, commemorative music playlists, craft activities and more. To download these resources, visit the Anzac Portal .

Services held in Gallipoli in Türkiye, and Villers-Bretonneux in France, hold special meaning for Australians. They’re where many of those who served in the First World War fought and died, and were integral in the forging of the Anzac traditions that are embraced and carried on today by the Australian Defence Force.

Anyone planning to attend either of these two services must register for a free attendance pass by visiting commemorations.teg.com.au . The international Dawn Services will also be broadcast live on the ABC on Anzac Day and streamed live on DVA’s Facebook page.

Every year, the Australian Government works with local authorities to also hold safe, solemn and dignified Anzac Day services at significant sites where Australians fought and died in the Second World War: the Bomana War Cemetery and Isurava Memorial in Papua New Guinea, Hellfire Pass in Thailand, and the Sandakan Memorial Park in Malaysia. Please consult the DVA website for important information about participating in these services.

More information about Anzac Day overseas services is available on the Anzac Day page of the DVA website .

Anzac day 2024.

On 25 April, Anzac Day services will be held in major cities and at international war memorials. If you're travelling to attend a service, be prepared and know what to expect.

The Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) manages the Anzac Day Dawn Services at memorial sites in:

  • Gallipoli, Türkiye
  • Villers-Bretonneux, France

DVA has information on the venue and time for each service .

Smaller services are held at other memorial sites.

Exercise a high degree of caution in Türkiye and France due to the threat of terrorist attacks. Attacks could happen at any time. Follow the instructions of security personnel. They're there to keep you and others safe. There’ll be security screening when entering the memorial sites. Security will take any banned items off you. You can find a list of banned items in the site conditions of entry.

Research the local laws and customs of your destination. Know the behaviour that's expected around important events. Always be respectful, no matter how you're marking the day.

Local health authorities give limited medical support at the memorial sites. They’re equipped for emergencies, not to treat minor ailments. There are few facilities for people with disabilities or limited mobility. Find out if local facilities will meet your needs.

Anzac Day Dawn Services are held outdoors. The weather can be variable. You'll be exposed to the elements as there's no permanent shelter. Bring clothing that suits the climate where you're going.

Know how you'll get to service locations.

  • There's no public transport to the Gallipoli Peninsula National Park in Türkiye.
  • Local tourism shuttles may be available from Amiens to Villers-Bretonneux, France.

You can’t drive a private vehicle to memorial sites on Anzac Day. Private vehicle parking is available near the sites. There will be free shuttles available to and from the memorial sites. You're encouraged to join a coach tour.
