Entry requirements

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Vietnam set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Vietnamese Embassy in the UK.

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering Vietnam.

If you show symptoms of COVID-19 on arrival, you must notify the health agency at the border gates.

Passport validity requirements

If you’re visiting Vietnam, your passport must have:

  • an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the day you arrive
  • at least 2 blank pages
  • no damage – British nationals have been denied entry and exit due to passport damage

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Checks at border control

Make sure you get your passport stamped.

Check the visa expiry date written in your passport is correct before leaving border control.

Visa requirements

If you plan to stay in Vietnam for 45 days or fewer, you do not need a visa for:

  • business travel – but not paid or voluntary work

You must have a visa for longer stays or if you’re entering Vietnam for other reasons.

Applying for a visa or e-visa

Tourists staying more than 45 days can:

  • book with a travel agent in Vietnam and ask them to apply for a visa preapproval letter – your agent will tell you when to collect your visa from the embassy
  • apply for an e-visa that allows a 90-day stay and multiple entries – e-visas restrict you to entry and exit points you select when you apply
  • apply for other visa types from the Vietnamese Embassy in the UK

The British Embassy will not assist with visa extensions or sponsor visa applications.

If you get an e-visa while in Vietnam, you must exit the country and re-enter to start your e-visa.

To stay longer (to work or study, for business travel or for other reasons), you must meet the Vietnam government’s entry requirements. Check which type of visa or work permit you need with the Vietnam Immigration Department .

Read about visas and work permits if you live in Vietnam .

If you overstay your visa or work illegally, you may be delayed from travel until you pay a fine, and you could be deported and prevented from visiting Vietnam in the future.

Extend a non-tourist visa through the Vietnam Immigration Department .

Travelling through Vietnam

If you transfer from an international flight to a domestic one in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, you must go through immigration and enter Vietnam. You must do this even if your final destination is outside Vietnam.

Check with your airline before departing.

Vaccination requirements

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and certificates you need in TravelHealthPro’s Vietnam guide .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Vietnam . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

If you’re taking prescription medication into Vietnam, carry it in your hand luggage with a copy of the prescription. If it has a total import value greater than 100 US dollars, you must declare it at customs. For information about restrictions on medication, see Health .

Taking money into or out of Vietnam

If you’re taking cash into or out of Vietnam, you must declare amounts over:

  • 15 million Vietnamese dong
  • 5,000 US dollars (or the same amount in other currencies)

If you’re leaving the country with more than these amounts, declare the money at customs and show either:

  • confirmation you’re carrying cash abroad, issued by an authorised credit institution
  • written approval to carry cash, issued by the State Bank of Vietnam

Have a Question?

Vietnamese visas for british citizens.

From 15 Aug 2023, the government of Vietnam decided to extend the duration of stays in Vietnam  from 15 to 45 days  for citizens of 13 countries who are unilaterally exempted from visas by Vietnam.

These countries are  Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the U.K., Northern Ireland, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Belarus.  Citizens of these countries are allowed to stay for 45 days from the time of entry, regardless of passport type and entry purpose.

According to the U.K. government, Britons are making trips to Vietnam more than 200,000 times a year. With beautiful bays, peaceful beaches, exciting city life, and large coffee plantations, this small Asian gem has a lot to offer. For starters, British travelers enjoy the inexpensive dining and shopping, as well as the many river cruise options throughout the country.

What may be driving British citizens to visit Vietnam, aside from the destination itself, is that London started offering direct flights to Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi in 2011. These nonstop flights are available on Vietnam Airlines, or you can fly to either airport, as well as the one in Da Nang , via connecting flights on any of the following airlines:

  • Singapore Airlines
  • Cathay Pacific
  • China Eastern
  • Asiana Airlines
  • Etihad Airways

Travelers flying to Vietnam out of England can leave from London, Manchester, or a few other international airports, while Scottish tourists can fly out of Edinburgh or Glasgow. Flights from Cardiff in Wales only go to the Hanoi airport, and there aren’t any nonstop options. Most tourists from the U.K. fly into Hanoi and out of Ho Chi Minh City, as it gives them a chance to explore both areas.

Britons may have to get a visa before visiting Vietnam, so make sure you get that squared away before booking a flight.

Do U.K. Citizens Need a Vietnam Visa?

According to the latest Vietnam Immigration Regulations, United Kingdom citizens holding an ordinary passport valid at least 06 months more from date of arrival into Vietnam airport, and stay up to 15 days ONLY, are on the Vietnam visa exemption list until June 30, 2019.

Between the two exempted entries period (counting from the exit date of the 1st exempted entry to the 2nd exempted entry date), the applicant MUST ALSO WAIT FOR AT LEAST 30 DAYS.

That means the following:

  • If a United Kingdom citizen’s length of stay in Vietnam is LESS THAN 15 days, they do not need a visa to travel.
  • If a United Kingdom citizen’s length of stay in Vietnam is LONGER THAN 15 days, a Vietnam Visa is required.

In either case, the traveler’s passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry into Vietnam.

How to Get a Vietnam Visa from the U.K.

British tourists have two options for obtaining their visa, depending on their length of stay. If your trip is 30 days or less and you are traveling by air, you can get your Vietnam visa online. This is known as a Visa On Arrival . To obtain a Vietnam Visa On Arrival, travelers just need to complete the following simple steps:

  • Submit an application form online via our secured network to receive an approval letter.
  • Take your approval letter and passport on your trip and have an immigrations officer give you your stamp and entry visa upon arrival at one of Vietnam’s international airports.

The second option for securing your visa is to go through the Vietnam Embassy. Take your passport and the following information to your closest consulate to apply for a visa:

  • Name: Your full name, exactly as it is on your passport
  • Birthday: The date (DD/MM/YY)
  • Arrival: The date you will arrive in Vietnam. You may enter the country later, but not earlier than your specified arrival date
  • Passport number
  • Nationality: As shown on the passport you are using to enter Vietnam

Once you have submitted your application, you will have to go back to the embassy to pick up your stamped visa after several days.

@Julie Pratt, As long as he holds a valid UK passport, he can visit Vietnam from Australia for up to 15 days without having to obtain a visa.

I am a Uk passport holder I will be entering vietnam on the 29th of July and leaving on the 15th of august to go to Japan but will then return to Vietnam on the 23rd until the 29th of August to go to cambodia. My orginal plan was to get a single e visa entry from the 29th to the 15th of August for 30 days then when I come back use a visa waiver would it be possible to do that?

@Lance Gill, Sure, your plan sounds great:

  • Yes, E-visa for the first entry works fine (29 Jul to 15 Aug).
  • The second entry from 23-29 August, you can return on a visa-free entry.

I am a UK passport holder. I have entered vietnam on a 30 day evisa. This runs out on the 29th April. My flight out of Ho Chi Minh City is on 4th May back home. So I am 5 days over. Can I exit Vietnam at the laos land border crossing and then re-enter straight away on a 15 day visa waiver?

@Scott, In 2020, the 30-day gap regulation between two entries was removed, which means that you can now leave and immediately return for another visa-free entry without waiting for 30 days.

I will be travelling to Hanoi on 22nd April, do I require visa for Vietnam Hanoi? I am only staying for 8 days.

@Minesh, As a UK passport holder, you are not required to obtain a visa for visits up to 15 days in Vietnam. Therefore, if your stay in Vietnam is only 8 days, you do not need to apply for a visa.

Could you please help me and verify that I would be eligible for a 6 month tourist (non working visa) to Vietnam based in Da Nang. I am currently living in Thailand on a retirement visa but my partner has a new job in Vietnam (12 month contract) and obviously I will join them. It is not possible for 12 months correct?

@Mike Worth, Currently, there are no tourist visas available for a duration of 6 months or 1 year. The maximum length of stay that one can apply for is a 3-month visa.

I am a holder of Uk Passport and will be visiting Vietnam in July for 18 days. I understand I am eligible to stay there for 15 days only, would I need to apply for tourist visa to stay few days longer?

@Tanya, For stays exceeding 15 days, a visa is required to enter Vietnam. Thus, we recommend that you apply for a visa prior to your departure.

I have a question about Vietnam visa, before I apply on your site! I have a United Kingdom passport and I am travelling from Phnom Penh to ho chi minh city by bus. I will be in Vietnam for less than 15 days, and I know with United Kingdom passport you get 15 day free. I just wanted to check, does this still work going by bus through land border for visa on arrival or only flying?

@Arya, You can enter Vietnam by bus without any issues under the visa exemption policy. If you plan to stay in Vietnam for less than 15 days, you will not need a visa.

Everything You Need To Know About Vietnam Visa

vietnam-visa-image

Note: If you do not hold an official British citizen passport but have another type of British nationalities, such as British national (overseas), you need to apply for a regular visa before you plan your travel into Vietnam.

Important points to consider when applying for Vietnam visa

If your travel plans include several visits within a short span, you are advised to apply for a regular multiple entry visa (which is covered in the following sections).

This is because the evisa is currently valid for 1 entry only.

When your port of entry is Phu Quoc, note that here you can avail the facility of visa-free entry of up to 30 days. However, this is valid when your itinerary includes only stays in Phu Quoc. If you are visiting other places, you have to follow the visa requirements of the respective regions.

Hence, when you enter through Phu Quoc and plan to stay here for the entire duration, select the 30-day Phu Quoc visa waiver. If you plan to travel to other places, opt for the evisa facility. Communicate with the immigration official clearly so that he grants you the required exemption facility.

If you choose the 30-day Phu Quoc visa waiver and later change your plans and wish to travel to the Vietnamese mainland, you have to apply for a Vietnamese visa at the Phu Quoc Immigration Office. Again, when you have the 30-day waiver but travel to another nation and return to Vietnam, you can re-apply for an e-visa.

We know the above regulations can be confusing. If you have any additional doubts, you can call our helpline and discuss with us about your exact requirements. We shall guide you through the process.

Overall, British nationals have the following visa types available:

  • Regular visas obtained from the Vietnamese Embassy in London

If you have fixed travel plans, that exceeds 15 days but is limited for up to 30 days, you can apply for an e-visa. For this, you need to submit your application online. This is one of the fastest, easiest, and most comfortable methods since you can carry out the entire process electronically from any location.

All you need to do it fill out the application form online. The documents required to be submitted are a scanned copy of the biodata pages of your passport and a recent passport-size photograph. Once your visa is approved, you will receive a Visa Approval Letter issued by Vietnam Immigration Department through email.

Now, take a print out of the approval letter. Once you arrive at the visa landing counter in Vietnam, present this document to the immigration officer along with your original passport (with a minimum of 6 months validity and at least two blank pages), 2 passport-sized photos, the completed and signed visa application form, and stamping fee.

The official will tally your documents with the records on the system and stamp the visa on your passport.

Note: E-visa is applicable only at fixed entry/exit points in the country. You need to select this point when you fill up your application form.

The international airports where e-visa is allowed are

  • Ho Chi Minh City
  • Da Nang City
  • Nha Trang City
  • Hai Phong City
  • Phu Quoc Island
  • Any of the 13 international land border crossings.

Regular visas

When you do not have fixed travel plans or you are planning to stay in Vietnam for more than 30 days, you need to obtain a visa from the nearest Vietnamese embassy before you enter the country.

Regular tourist visa

Regular Vietnamese tourist visas can be applied at the embassy. They are available in either single entry or multiple entries. Both single entry and multiple entry visas come with validities of 30 and 90 days. You can apply for one as per your requirements.

For this, you will need a completed visa application form, a valid and original passport, and a passport-size photograph. You do not need an appointment to submit the application package.

Once your visa is processed, your stamped passport can be collected from the consular section of the embassy.

Regular business visa

Regular business visas, which are obtained from the embassy, also offer options of single and multiple entries. They arrive with validities of 30 and 90 days, just like tourist visas.

For this, apart from the passport, photograph, and visa application form, you need to submit an invitation letter, travel itinerary (onward/return tickets). As for the application process, it is similar to that for a tourist visa.

Diplomatic visa

If you hold a diplomatic or official passport and are based in the UK, you can get a visa on Gratis. For this, apart from the general documents (passport, photograph, and visa application form), you need to submit a Note Verbal or an official letter from the UK Foreign Office or diplomatic missions accredited to the UK.

Visa for official travel

In order to avail an official travel visa, you have to apply though the Embassy. For this purpose, you need to submit a completed application form, a passport, and a photograph. The specifications are the same as those for a tourist visa.

Along with the above documents, please attach a business cover letter from your employer in the UK, a proof of approval issued by the sponsor in Vietnam, and a Note Verbale specifying your purpose of travel and approved by the Vietnamese Embassy.

Once all the documents are in order, follow the same steps for visa application as outlined in the section for tourist visas.

Transit requirements

British nationals transiting visa Vietnamese airports are visa-exempt for a stay of up to 24 hours. However, for this, you must have a valid passport, hold proof of sufficient funds, own onward/return airline tickets, and possess all the documentation required for the next destination.

Vietnam entry requirements for British nationals who are spouses or children of Vietnamese nationals

If you are a British national and are the spouse or child of a Vietnamese resident, you can apply for a visa exemption certificate.

This certificate offers a validity of up to 5 years and you can use it to enter Vietnam multiple times, with each visit not exceeding 6 months.

You can apply for this document at your nearest Vietnamese Embassy or at the Immigration Department in Vietnam.

Restrictions at land borders

Do note that in Vietnam, there are several local crossing points shared by the borders of Cambodia and Laos. These crossing points are only meant to be used by citizens of Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam.

If you attempt to cross such locations, please confirm with the local authorities before travelling to the points.

Registration

After you arrive in Vietnam, you need to register your stay. If you are staying in a hotel, submit your passport at the check-in point and the staff shall register your stay with the local police.

Ensure that you collect your passport and do not use it as a means of renting a room.

Again, if you are planning to stay in private accommodation, you can take the help of your host to register yourself. Failing to abide by the rules can lead to a fine or penalty.

UK Emergency Travel Documents

UK Emergency Travel Documents (ETDs) are accepted by the Vietnamese government for entry, airside transit and exit from the country. Of course, you should apply for a visa before your travel plans.

However, in the case that you lose your passport, you can apply for an ETD at the Vietnam Immigration Department. However, before you exit Vietnam, you must apply for an exit visa. This process may take up to 5 working days.

Under any scenario, never overstay the period mentioned on your Vietnamese visa. If you do so and do not have the required permissions from authorities, you may be fined and your travel plans can be delayed.

For any doubts, you can always reach out to our 24x7 helpline or contact the Vietnamese Embassy in London.
