New hour-long sunrise tours to be offered at the historic Roman Baths

New “Sunrise Tours” are to be offered at the historic Roman Baths, giving people the opportunity to visit the site outside of the normal opening hours.

The tours, available for an exclusive number of people, will give participants the opportunity to find out about the history of the site from an expert guide.

The hour-long tours will cover the history of the Roman Baths, revealing how they were used by the Romans, and how they were discovered and excavated in the 1800s.

Visitors will explore the Roman Baths museum with some of the most experienced staff and get to talk to them about the unique artefacts on display, including the gilt bronze head of the goddess Sulis Minerva and the Gorgon’s Head.

After the tour, visitors will be free to carry on exploring the site at their leisure, though after 10am the site will also open to the general public.

Kevin Guy, Leader of Bath & North East Somerset Council, said: “This new experience provides visitors to the Roman Baths with an exciting chance to explore the historic monument away from the busiest times of day, and discover more about the history of this fascinating site from our expert staff.

“Sunrise Tours are perfect for those looking for a quieter, more intimate, experience when visiting one of the finest historic sites in the world.”

Tours will begin at 9am on Mondays and Fridays, from February to June 2023, excluding school holidays and Bank Holidays.

Pre-booking is essential, as tickets will not be available to purchase on the day, and tickets will be limited to a maximum of 60 people per session.

Tickets cost £60 per person, with group discounts available.

People can also book a table in the Pump Room restaurant, which offers a choice of a Champagne Bucks Fizz Brunch or morning coffee with pastries, accompanied by live music.

Experience Sunrise at the Roman Baths

Discover the ancient history of the Roman Baths and tour the historic site before opening hours. On select dates, visitors to the Roman Baths are offered the opportunity to beat the crowds and explore the historic site before it opens to the public.

The tours will run from 9-10am on the following dates:

• Monday 17th April to Friday 26th May
• Monday 5th June to Friday 30th of June

Please note that tours will not run on 8th of May, or 29th of May.

Places are limited to 60 people per session, so booking is essential. See the Roman Baths website for more information.

During your Roman holiday, don’t miss an opportunity to visit baths from times of the Roman Empire, where Caracalla’s baths are one of the most impressive. Moreover, the thermae of Emperor Caracalla are the city’s second largest and most famous in history ancient roman baths.

 The thermae were fully functional in the 5 th century when they were mentioned to as one of the seven wonders of Rome. The daily capacity of simultaneous visitors is thought to have been from 6 thousand to 8 thousand bathers

During our private Roman Baths tour you will get to know many interesting facts. For instance, did you know that the only area which has yet to emerge from the excavations and remains almost a mystery are the bathrooms/toilets? Also, we will discover the story of the Emperor Caracalla , whose reign was notable for the Antonine Constitution or the Edict of Caracalla, which granted Roman citizenship to people from all over the Roman Empire. Moreover, he had the reputation of a tyrant and cruel leader.

Construction of the thermae was probably initiated by father of Caracalla, Emperor Septimius Severus and inaugurated in AD 216. Interestingly, workers would have to install more than 2000 t of material daily for 6 years to complete the baths between 211 and 216.
