30 Australian Made Camper Trailers (+ 33 Imported Brands)

Gone are the days where a camper trailer is a simple canvas tent sitting atop a box trailer. Over the years, camper trailers have evolved into very capable and well-equipped recreational vehicles, providing us with all of our adventurous needs, yet still being wrapped up in a lightweight and low-profile package.

The rise in availability of more affordable camper trailers has reduced the barrier to entry for many Australian families who are wanting to own a camper trailer, yet may not have had the funds to do so in the past.

Just like everything, China is able to replicate what the consumer wants, but at a fraction of the cost. However, with the cheaper cost, comes cheaper quality.

Many people are still opting for Australian made camper trailers purely for the superior quality and the extra bells and whistles that come with the locally-built trailers.

Australian made camper trailers are generally constructed using lighter materials, with higher-quality canvas, fittings and components. They are designed with true Aussie off-roading in mind.

Australian Made Logo

When looking for Australian made camper trailers, it’s important to read the company’s wording very carefully. Just because a business is 100% Australian owned and operated, that sheds no light on where the bulk of the trailers are actually manufactured.

In fact many businesses are falsely advertising Australian made camper trailers, even though the parts have been manufactured in China and shipped over as a flat pack. Simply being assembled in Australia is not enough to claim the 100% Australian Made title.

In this article you’ll find:

  • Types of camper trailers
  • List of Australian made camper trailers
  • List of camper trailer brands that are partially or fully manufactured overseas

This camper trailer brands Australia list is solely focussed on Soft-floor, Hard-floor and Pop-up trailers. Hybrids are a category unto own and will be covered in a separate article.

100% Australian Made Camper Trailers

This Australian made camper trailers list only includes campers that are 100% manufactured within Australia (which is usually proudly displayed on their website).

If I couldn’t find a definitive answer as to where a camper trailer is made, or if it seems to be partially made overseas, I’ve added it to the ‘Made Overseas’ list down below.

Camper Trailer Brands Partially or Fully Manufactured Overseas

The following camper trailer brands list includes campers that are either partially or fully imported into Australia, then distributed.

Many camper trailer manufacturers will import the parts, then assemble the trailers here (sometimes with additional Australian parts). However, those products cannot stake a claim at being 100% Australian made camper trailers, so this is where they land.

Any camper trailer brands that don’t clearly advertise or state that they are Australian made in any way have also been added to this list. We can only assume that they’d be advertising it loudly and proudly if they were.

To further your research, check out my post on how much camper trailers weigh (including a comparison weight chart with averages).

Notice any camper trailer brands Australia that need to be added or removed from these lists? Let me know in the comments down below.

Hi, loving the lists with my research to buy a tailer. Just a correction for your list. Offroad RV should be Offroad RVS (offroadrvs.com.au (not offroadrv.com)). Cheers Keith

Thanks, Keith, that’s been updated.

australia travel trailers

There was a time when Australia was a proud camper trailer building nation. When we didn’t have to write an article about Australian made camper trailers, because, apart from a few notable exceptions (mostly from South Africa), all our camper trailers were built locally. It’s really only been in the last decade that that’s changed.

Early Australian camper trailers were built in response to rising fuel costs and cars with smaller capacity engines – just because you drove a Fiat 500 in 1972 didn’t mean you weren’t interested in towing a trailer on summer holidays, after all. They were mostly predecessors to the Jayco-esque camper trailers which are, in essence, just small caravans. But the first Australian camper trailer is generally considered to have been built by R.J Rankin in 1928. It was basically just a trailer with a canvas canopy over it and bed inside. Designs evolved from there, though, and Australian builders were influenced by overseas designs from Europe and the USA. Notably, one of the four RV manufacturers in Australia that are more than 50 years old is Cub Campers, which is one of the most vocal advocates of Aussie manufacturing in the sector.

Today, there’s a shrinking, but passionate number of camper trailer manufacturers operating in Australia, but because they can’t compete on price with most of the imported product from China, they compete on quality and innovation. Australian made camper trailers are, as a general rule, amongst the best on the market and often the ones setting the trends. They are roughly divided into three camps: the Jayco-esque campers, the tent-trailers, which are mostly steel trailers with a canvas tent incorporated, and hybrid camper trailers, which look a lot like small caravans or teardrops, but are made by camper trailer manufacturers and usually very handy off-road .

Aussie camper trailers are increasingly innovative, and come in all different shapes and sizes. (image credit: Brendan Batty/campertrailerreview.com.au)

By contrast, the factories in China building camper trailers for local importers continue to grow and, at the same time, quality continues to improve – driven by market demand and pressure from the Aussie builders and global markets. Every time I think I’ve got a handle on all the different camper trailer brands, I hear about another – while I was writing this, it was Hitched Campers and SUV Campers . Where 10 years ago there was almost no comparison between the quality of imported and local camper trailers, the lines are now much blurrier. Camper trailers also come in small quantities from South Africa and very small numbers from the USA.

The benefits of buying an Australian-made camper trailer go beyond the inherent quality manufacturers need to aspire to relevance in the market. Many Australian campers have innovations that no other campers have: from the literal staircase incorporated in Patriot Campers and the innovative (and patented) awning system in the Trackabout Campers to the simple genius of how Cub Campers’ forward fold camper opens and closes.

Those innovations have led to campers that are, as a rule, quick and easy to set-up and pack-up and very well suited to the Australian styles of travel, which often involves days of travel before finally setting up at a dream location.

Local builders often have more scope to customise their trailers to suit more personal needs, as they are usually built to order, rather than by the container-load months in advance. This isn’t just a boon for the end-consumer, as even importers of Chinese-built campers still find campers they’ve ordered missing features they wanted or with surprises they didn’t and so have to do some tinkering locally.

The functionality and complexity of Aussie camper trailer kitchens is one of their strong points.

Buying Australian also ensures the quality of ancillary parts are high. Items like water tanks, suspension components, tyres, bearings and electrical components have often been weak points in Chinese-built campers, but quality in these areas have been points of pride amongst the Australian industry.

Australian-built campers are usually lighter than even the best equivalents from China. Part of that is a result of better engineering from Australian manufacturers and also a local understanding that lighter campers go further off-road (assuming, of course, there’s no reduction in strength). I’ve had importers tell me that they use heavier steel in their campers just to make sure they’re as strong as Aussie ones – the weight a reasonable trade-off for warranty problems down the track.

This weight is often also continued into the tent canvas. In general, campers with Australian-made canvas use a 275gsm Wax Converters Canvas – generally considered the best canvas in the world, local bias aside – whereas most imported campers use a heavier 450gsm canvas, again to make sure there won't be any problems with it down the track.

Of course, Australian-built campers are more expensive than imported ones, so feature for feature, you pay more. In the end, you have to be happy with that and satisfied that you aren’t just buying a list of components bolted together, but the pride and expertise of local manufacturers. These days it’s hard to find a bad Aussie camper trailer builder , but these are some of the best to buy.

07. Walkabout Campers

Cost: From $6000

Most caravanners are familiar with the Gall Boys and their wild adventures in northern Australia, but few realise one of them builds camper trailer tents from a small shed in Queensland. And they’re bloody good.

Simple, elegant and in great colours, the tents are top notch and the simple trailers are built around the corner. It’s a great, cheap option that’s all Aussie. However, Craig does only have capacity to make 45 a year, so you might have to wait a bit for yours .

These Aussie camper trailers come in bright colours and are among the least expensive on the market. (image credit: Walkabout Campers/Craig Gall)

06. Cub Campers Frontier

Cost: From $35,990

Although the forward-folding camper concept was invented in Australia, it took anyone here a long time to have a good crack at it.

The Cub Frontier is the only fully Australian-made forward folding camper which has the best tent set-up, plus simple and comfortable features in a light trailer. It suits travelling couples, although is one of the better forward-folds if you’re considering one for your family travels.

Although it’s one of the most expensive forward-fold campers on the market, it’s simple setup, comfortable living space and Aussie build make it good value. (image credit: Brendan Batty/campertrailerreview.com.au)

05. Jayco Eagle Outback

Cost: From $28,990

The Jayco range of pop-up camper trailers are conceivably the most popular in the country, especially with families. The Eagle has the best floorplan, though, with a lounge next to the larger bed so adults can retire to it for quiet conversation and port, while the kids slumber at the other end. Any of the Jayco camper range is a great family camper.

With recent upgrades to suspension and a time-honoured layout inside, the Eagle Outback continues to be a family favourite.

04. Track Tvan Canning

Cost: From $67,490

Still one of the most desirable camper trailers on the market , its space-age teardrop design, incredibly clever tent system and military proven suspension system are the pride of many outback travellers.

There are four models in the range, but the third-tier Canning seems the best value to me, with just the right amount of comfort, without going overboard. Suits the serious, long-term outback traveller.

Long considered one of Australia’s best off-road camper trailers, the Tvan has been improved through constant modernisation.

03. Cub Brumby

Cost: $29,490

Cub is the longest standing camper trailer builder in Australia and the Brumby is one of its most iconic models. Simple, strong, small and light-weight, it’s enduringly easy to set up and pack up with just enough comfort for two. It’s the best value, Aussie-made rear-fold on the market.

Although it’s only small and light, the Brumby has long been Cub’s most sought after camper trailer. (image credit: Brendan Batty/campertrailerreview.com.au)

02. Trackabout Explorer

Cost: From $30,500

Trackabout has always made an honest , hard-working camper trailer, but its most recent models have been really innovative. The Explorer is the smallest walk-up camper on the market – a walk-up camper is one with a walkway inside the trailer body at the end of the bed, so there’s no ladder to climb into bed – thanks to its folding bed design. It’s also super quick to set up and has a patented awing arm system. In touring form it’s great for travellers who move often or those who want a lightweight off-road camper trailer. In basecamp form it’s ideal for small families.

For 20 years Trackabout has been known as a tough-as-nails camper trailer builder. Its latest models are also incredibly innovative.

01. Patriot X1

Cost: $45,990

Patriot is like one of those kids at school who everyone loved and hated in equal measure because they were too good at everything.

The latest trailer, based in the top-of-the-line X1 , features a hard-topped roof, soft-floor tent which sets up in an instant. I’ve used the normal soft-floor tent version, which goes up in about two minutes.

Patriots are expedition-style trailers with great storage options, an excellent kitchen and innovative features and have one a stack of awards. Perfect for anyone, because their tent options are extensive.

Intricate, rugged and darn good-looking, there’s a reason the Patriot is the most desirable camper on the market right now.

What do you think is the best Aussie-made camper trailer? let us know in the comments.

TIPS TO CHOOSING A STAR VISION CAMPER

Getting away from the city’s noise and embracing the simplicity and peace of nature is a highly enjoyable experience for many Australians. However, traditional camping on hard surfaces or in tents can quickly become tiresome. Camper trailers and caravans provide an ideal solution, allowing you to engage in outdoor activities, take a hot shower after a day of travel, enjoy a meal in the wilderness, and relax in a comfortable bed as night falls. A camper trailer becomes your mobile sanctuary, turning each journey into an unforgettable experience.

Considerations to think about include:

  • What kinds of locations will I be visiting?
  • Does my family/I prefer less crowded and remote destinations?
  • How often do I plan to go out on camping trips?
  • During which seasons of the year will I most often be towing?
  • What facilities and technologies do I want in my camper trailer or caravan?

If your adventure involves exploring remote and less-visited locations, then our off-road camper trailers, hybrids & caravans are the perfect choice. With features like heating systems, water tanks, refrigeration, a sturdy exterior, and a fully-equipped kitchen — it frees you from traditional campgrounds. Furthermore, you can enhance your evenings with built-in entertainment facilities — all the luxuries you need for your holiday are seamlessly included, with no additional setup required. Our range of camper trailers, hybrids & caravans include all the essential features for exploring the wilderness.

Pioneer Verve

Pioneer Campers was taken over by Track Trailer – makers of the famous Tvan – in 2020. The Verve is a derivative of the original 2015 Pioneer Mitchell cross-over van, with input from Track’s engineering

Ezytrail Parkes 15 Mk2

At OTA we purposely avoid testing caravans, because we reckon there are enough people doing that. However, we do like to check out the cross-over van market, typified at the top end by pop-top, single-axle units like Ezytrail’s Parkes Mk2.

Cub Frontier Forward Fold camper

Forward-fold campers occupy less ground space and provide a dinette area – just like a small caravan. Cub’s model is truly off-road compatible as well.

Stoney Creek Campers

This brand has been around for a few years now and seems to have a loyal following. The model range covers the whole camper trailer spectrum, from soft-floor shorty to forward-fold models.

Pod Campers

Pod Campers

The Pod Camper range is one of the few offerings in the Australian camper tailer marketplace that is designed specifically for lightweight camping. Many camper trailers are too heavy and have far too much ball weight for towing by SUVs and small 4WD wagons.

10 Best Camper Trailers of 2022

Whether you are looking for a camper trailer for family travels or just some solo time, we've got the best picks for you.

These handpicked camper trailers in Australia come from only popular and renowned brands. We've taken time to explore each camper trailer and dig out all the details about its performance and features.

Here are the best camper trailers that can be a part of your adventure in 2022!

1. Escapod Teardrop Trailer

At the time of writing, we are unaware if these are available in Australia. There may be second hand privately imported models for sale.

Escapod is a Utah-based company well-known for producing futuristic and top-notch teardrop trailers. Our favourite camper trailers from the Escapod are from their Topo series. The Escapod camper trailers start at a price of about $17,000 USD.

We love these camper trailers as they come with a bundle of features. In this teardrop trailer, you get a comfy queen-size bed, solar panels, insulated walls, and every other van life essentials you'd want.

What's more, the hard-topped roof also lets you mount rooftop tents and showers to unlock more utility. The trailer has enough space for two campers. There are also features for internal lighting, storage.

You'll fall in love with the exterior design of Escapod's simple trailers. You'll also appreciate the fact that it comes in great colours. Lastly, the large cooking area, hot water system, and off-road tires will make van life fun!

2. Bruder EXP 6 Camper

Your hunt for a travel buddy is all set to come to an end with the Bruder EXP 6 Camper. Bruder is an example that nothing can beat an Aussie build! This monster trailer weighs a whopping 2,000 kg and comes at a price tag of $70,000 AUD.

If you are a camping enthusiast or want to live off-grid, the Bruder EXP 6 Camper is an excellent investment.

The EXP 6 Camper can sleep small families of up to 6 members. Wait until you see the fancy outdoor and indoor cooking area, a pop-top roof, and working shower!

You'll also be delighted to learn that this ultimate camper trailer harbours a plush queen-size bed, an enormous fridge , Wi-Fi, TV, and air conditioner.

There is more space than you'll ever need! Since the kitchen deck folds out, you can enjoy outdoors while cooking your favourite camping dishes.

3. Sherpa Camper

Next on our list is the Sherpa Camper. This Australian trailer is a product by BRS Offroad. The camera trailer looks straight out of some sci-fi or future film from the outside.

You need to shell out $66,000 to bring home this camping buddy. One of the notable features of this camper trailer is that it only takes a couple of minutes to set up.

The rooftop tent pops open in the pop-up camper trailers like these. It is thoughtful how the brand offers resilient outlining and mosquito-proof nets. The Sherpa Campers have also surprised us with their three layers of windows.

Being an off-grid trailer, it can take all the beating your throw at it. It features road tires so that the muddy and tricky terrains don't use your journey. Its space-like design and hi-fi cooking area have our appreciation! Though costly, you would find the Sherpa Camper to be worth every penny.

4. Timberleaf Pika

The Timberland Pike can be every minimalist's dream space. You'll dig its bold black paint the moment you lay eyes on this cool camping unit. Apart from black, the trailer comes in a whole range of colours. Though it only has the basics, you cannot deny its durable and excellent engineering.

Plus, the trailer is compact, budgeted, and lightweight. It means that this light trailer is easy to tow. However, you'll not find many facilities and accessories in the Timberland Pika. But, for a price tag of just $11,000 USD, we think you can overlook those missing facilities.

It includes galley cabinets, where you can store your cooking accessories. The trailer also takes care of cooling your beverages with its 35L refrigerator. All in all, it offers the best value for first-timers and people who are not looking to spend big bucks on campers.

 5. Pioneer Campers

We cannot simply miss Pioneer Campers in the best camper trailers list. The Mitchell Trailer is one of Pioneer Campers' best off-road camper trailers.

The pricing is a tad steep at $50,000 AUD, but you'll understand that the various features make up for the pricing. It is also worth mentioning that the camper trailer weighs 1300 kg.

The best deal about this camper trailer is that most elements slide out, enabling more space. Even while off the beaten track, the durable build of this camper gives you a comfortable experience.

There's a tent and a shower, perfect for a trip with family. You'll find a stainless steel rollout kitchen, slide-out bench, cutlery drawer, sink, two-burner stove, and a large bench in this caravan. It also gives you access to clean water with its 120-litre water tank.

You'll have a great sleep at night with the larger bed holding an innerspring mattress . By and large, Pioneer Campers absolutely know what they're doing with this camping trailer.

The classic and reliable build of the Airstream Basecamp is perfect if you are looking for a camper trailer that will live for years to come. We think that the exterior is incredible and modern. Besides, it packs all the latest gizmos and gadgets that you'll need during your camping trip.

Of course, with the various features, the price tag of the Airstream Basecamp touches $38,000 USD. You'll find this trailer a worthy investment because it comes with all top-notch amenities – blackout curtains, bathroom, shower, and kitchen with two-burner hob.

Remember, this trailer is not as big as our previous picks. It's perfect for a pair with pets. One of the main reasons to pick this trailer is its excellent storage and posh interiors.

The Blackseries HQ17 camper trailers cost $50,000 AUD! You can technically call it an apartment on wheels!

The HQ17 from Blackseries boasts quality off-road tires and excellent suspension, best for tricky terrains. It is also one of the very few off-road camper trailers that include a washing machine.

If you think the above camper trailer is beyond your budget, you'll love the Oregon Camper Do Drop that costs as little as $6,200. The exterior trailer body features a clean and straightforward design. This little fellow is perfect if you have a small tow.

Also, being just 250 kg, it is the lightest camper trailer on our list! The manufacturer has put together off-road tires, storage, and a double bed to make sure you have a pleasant time.

The clever design of the window transforms into a table when you want to dine in. There's also a roof rack that lets you add more storage and portable showers.

9. Cub Campers Frontier

Cub Campers is one of the best camper trailer manufacturers in Australia. The brand offers a diverse range of forward folds, soft floors, dual folds, and hybrid caravans. Do you know that Australia developed the concept of the forward-folding camper?

However, it took a long time for anyone to have a good crack at it. The engineering of the Cub Campers Frontier feels like a breath of fresh air. The camper can handle a total weight of 670 kg.

Frontiertier also happens to be one of the easiest-to-set-up forward folding trailers. The caper encompasses a living area, kitchen, bed, and everything you'd expect from a trailer.

Under the foot of the bed, you'll find six internal storage boxes. If you ask us, Frontiertier harbours all the amenities you can get at that price tag.

10. Jayco Eagle Outback

Last but not least, we have the Jayco Eagle Outback trailer on our list. The Jayco camper range is perfect for families. This Australian-made camper trailer can accommodate seven people. All the Jayco models follow a similar setup process, which is quite simple for beginners.

We also find the interior space to be highly functional and optimal. One of the most significant advantages of this camper trailer is its slide-out bed.

The Eagle Outback is also a chef's delight. The kitchen in this caravan has a four-burner cooktop, stainless steel sink, 90 L refrigerator, and sufficient benchtop space. There's also under-bench storage that can hold all the kitchen items.

Most existing Jayco users also claim that the Eagle Outback gives you a lot of opportunities to upgrade and modify.

Things to Consider While Buying Off-Road Camper Trailers

We wish that the process of buying a camping trailer was as joyful as riding in one. The best camping trailer will check all the boxes of towing capacity, build quality, living space, simple setup, and comfortable bed.

But that's not it. Several factors determine whether the off-road camper trailer is a good choice or not. You’ll need to understand the different types of camping trailers, weight attributes , and a slew of other features. But worry not! We've done the homework for you and put together a buying guide that will help you pick the best camper trailer.

Prioritize Storage

Whether travelling solo or with a large group, storage space always comes in handy. Even if not your topmost priority, storage should be one of your considerations. If you go on outdoor vacations for a week or more, you'll need a lot of utilities in your camper.

Storage allows you to keep things inside the trailer organized and the space decluttered. That said, there should be different storage spaces to lug your baggage, kitchen items, and personal items.

Understand the Types of Camper Trailers

If you are a first-time buyer, you might not be aware of the different camper trailers available in the market. This section will walk you through all the camper types!

  • Soft floor camper trailers: They'll look much the same if you compare a large cabin tent and soft floor camper trailers. The soft floor campers offer fantastic internal storage and spacious interiors. Many people find the setup of soft floor campers to be challenging. Also, they might not have all the amenities offered by hard floor camper trailers. They are best suited for large groups and families.
  • Hard floor camper trailers: Hard floor campers are much like pop-up camper trailers. The roof raises, rear, and front to create a spacious living. Hard floor campers are also the easiest to set up. You should know that these types of camper trailers have smaller sleeping space, less internal storage, and tend to weigh more.
  • Hybrid camper trailers: The hybrid camper trailers offer immense flexibility to the users. They retain many features of typical caravans. However, these camper trailers run more costly than soft or hard floor camper trailers. In terms of weight, the hybrid camper trailer is much bulkier.

Don't Forget the Modifications and Accessories

If your camper comes with accessories or recent upgrades, you should ensure that they are in proper working conditions. Also, depending on your requirements, you might require additional accessories such as microwaves, Wi-Fi, air-con, and so on.

Moreover, the camper trailer should also have some scope for modifications such as upgraded bedding, a second battery, and larger water tanks.

Unfortunately, finding a camper with all accessories and modifications can be tricky. As a result, we suggest you prioritize your requirements to help you narrow the choices.

Give Interior and Exterior Checks

Here is a list of a few interior and exterior checks that will make it easy for you to pick the best camper trailers:

  • Check the bedding to see if they are in good condition
  • Make sure all the lighting and electrical outlets work properly.
  • The overall condition of the interior should be tip-top.
  • It is also wise to check the exterior canvas for holes.
  • The awning should be easy to set up. Additionally, it would be best to consider the condition of the zips and velcro.
  • Analyze if the kitchen construction is durable or not. Amenities such as sinks, microwaves, and refrigerators should be present.
  • The capacity of the water tank should be enough for all the members. Also, check for a hot water system.
  • Does the camper trailer come with a bathroom? If yes, is it outside or inside?
  • The setup and pack down of the camper trailer should be simple.
  • Camper trailers should have stone guards to offer adequate protection.
  • Inspect the number of batteries in the trailer and whether they are solar-powered or not.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do i need to tow a camper trailer .

These days, camper trailers come with accessible towing features to save you from back-breaking work. You will need different components to ensure a proper towing mechanism. Below, we have mentioned all the five elements that are a must for camper towing:

  • Wiring harness
  • Trailer hitch ball
  • Pin and clip
  • Ball mount
  • Trailer hitch receiver

Make sure you check the towing capacity of your tower before loading the camper onto it!

Is a Camper Trailer Worth It?

Owing to the extensive cost of buying a camping trailer, you might be wondering if they are worth the investment or not.

Well, beyond the realms of DIY outdoor shelters and tents, camper trailers offer a comfortable and reliable experience. Here's what makes camper trailers worth it:

  • They cost lower as compared to hotels and rental accommodations.
  • You can tow off-road camper trailers to a variety of terrains.
  • Camper trailers allow outdoor adventures without limitations for cooking and bathing.
  • These days, campers come with all modern amenities to give you a home-like feel.
  • If you have a family of four to six members, you can go on family trips on the camper.

How Long Do Camper Trailers Last?

When you spend that kind of money on a camping unit, you indeed want it to last for years. Many people wonder how long camper trailers last before purchasing the trailer.

After all, you don't want to end up spending on something that will no longer be functional after a couple of years. Luckily, camper trailers last for up to 10 years on average. The lifespan of your camper trailer also largely depends on the build and how you maintain it.

The Final Verdict

Finding the best Australian-made camper trailer is an adventure in itself. There are hundreds of camper trailer brands in the market fighting for your attention!

Moreover, you have to consider the build quality, tent setup features, living space, water tanks, and so much more.

Hopefully, you'll find yourself a perfect camper trailer from our list based on your needs and requirements. Happy travelling!

CONVENIENCE

Ever felt the gaze of others as you arrive at a busy camping area?  Onlookers watch as you select your spot and start unpacking.   But there’s no need to worry with a Kerfton because setting up is so simple that you will look like pro every time.

In a Kerfton you can be setup for an overnight stay in minutes.  This includes bedding for the whole family with no need for “kids rooms”, stretcher beds or inflatable mattresses.  Bedding stays made-up when the camper is folded.

A Kerfton can be setup on any ground surface.  Its fully self supporting which means there is no need to drive in tent pegs or position poles on the ground.  Overnight stops on long journeys are easier when any spot is a potential camping spot.

Kerfton off road family camper trailer setup at camp.

The kitchen and fridge are accessible without erecting the tent.  If you arrive late at camp, one person can start preparing dinner as another unfolds the living area.

The kitchen is ready for use as soon as its moved into position.  It is permanently plumbed with hot and cold water and gas.  So, there's no hoses to connect and nothing to be forgotten and lost at the previous camp spot.

Kerfton family camper trailer quick access kitchen

Every Kerfton comes with a large table and bench seats, perfect for those kids not yet able to eat from a plate on their lap.

These are accessible as soon as the tailgate is opened making them perfect for roadside lunch stops.

The stainless steel sink is removable so you can drain the dishwater away from the camp spot without needing a bucket.

Kerfton camper trailer comes with bench seating & table for quick lunch stops

Storage space in a Kerfton is more than ample for extended camping. There are six interior cupboards and two drawers; the kitchen includes a large and small drawer and an open pantry area.

The fridge carrier accommodates fridges up to 78lts.  The front storage boot is big enough to fit a portable bbq (e.g. Webber Baby Q Premium), a chemical toilet and all your other camping gear.  The top of the boot can also be used for external storage.

Nothings as important as a good night’s sleep.

The Kerfton has a full queen sized master bed and two large single beds.

The whole family sleeps in style, in comfort, in safety, inside. The perfect family camper.

Kerfton 4 Berth Family Camper Trailer with 2 kids beds and full size queen bed

The size of the trailer was designed around the queen master bed.   Being an Australian standard size, all your linen from home fits perfectly.

The single beds are the ideal size for sleeping bags.

All beds are inside in the trailer, away from the creepy crawlies which is great for those families with younger children.

20221021_183331_reduced.jpg

The two single beds are separated which means no fighting between kids at bedtime.  In fact, your children will probably love having their own personal space.

For bigger families the single beds are long enough to top-and-tail smaller children.

The heater is great for making the interior more comfortable on those cold evenings and early mornings if you don't have a roaring campfire outside.

Interior of the Kerfton camper trailer with separated kids beds & full queen size bed for adults

Interior space within a Kerfton is larger than many hard floor trailers on the market. There's also plenty of interior height for standing up while getting changed.

The table can also be used inside making an interior meals area.  Or a great spot for that board game before the kids are off to bed.

Kerfton off road family camper trailer in full setup mode at camp

The entry steps are comfortable and easy to use.  With a full height door there's no need to duck down when entering the tent.  A huge benefit when you might be in and out dozens of times a day.

The tread height and spacing of the steps were designed using domestic staircase standards which is why the're so natural to use.

The TT730 abandons the full base camp station at the front, in favour of a smaller storage compartment, for storing racing gear, tie down straps, recovery equipment, a portable fridge, or anything else you could think of.

australia travel trailers

The TH610 is 6.1 metres long in total; including the base camp section up front, which provides storage, water, power, kitchen facilities and more. Not only will you haul your toys to remote, off road destinations, but you can camp there with them for longer.

australia travel trailers

The TH730 follows the same design cues as the 610, but with more space, totalling 7.3m long from the hitch to the end of the deck. If you’re looking for more space to accommodate a larger, four door side by side, or if you simply have more off road toys to haul.

australia travel trailers

Who doesn’t love a road trip?

They’re a cornerstone for families and couples looking to have fun while exploring deeper into their own countries. There are many options to go about road trips, including vehicles like RVs and caravans.

While they’re great options, they’re not always the best for smaller families or just a small couple. So, we thought we’d take a look at the best small camper trailers.

Let’s take a look at the best options for your off-road adventures!

Why have we chosen these camper trailers to feature in our list?

They’re great off-road.

australia travel trailers

Our choices for the best small camper trailers all feature great off-road capabilities. It’s all well and good having a travel trailer, but what good is it when you’re limited in where you can go with it on the road? By having an off road trailer , you’re opening yourself up to the endless possible travel destinations in Australia.

They’re perfect for small families!

australia travel trailers

While small travel trailers aren’t going to work for fast-growing families or families that have older kids, a small camper trailer is perfectly suited for smaller families. You’ve got more than enough space for a small family or couple to enjoy the open road and camp out comfortably.

Their custom design gives lots of storage space!

One thing that you’ve got to know about small camper trailers is that what they lack in size (which is by design), they make up for in smart planning. The makers of the small camper trailers we’re going to discuss have all been made to ensure there’s enough space for everything you need.

They’re packed full of other features!

Don’t be fooled by these small trailers. Sometimes more space isn’t better - it can be a nuisance!

For instance, some of these trailers for sale below have the lowest tow weight in the game, saving on fuel costs without sacrificing standard features the whole family will benefit from. Because of the limited space, manufacturers have come up with innovative designs and layouts to make sure these trailers are only packed with the essential features that your family will need on your camping trip.

As a result, some of the best camper trailers out there for small families and couples will still be stacked with pull-out kitchens, hot water, slide-out fridges and ovens, outdoor lighting, and so much more - you’ll be amazed at what’s cleverly been included in such a small living space.

They’re affordable!

If you’ve got the travel bug and want to hit the open road but are afraid of the cost of a small travel trailer, never fear. The great thing about small camper trailers is that they’re extremely affordable in comparison to other off-road camper trailers, caravans , RVs, etc.

You’ll be able to take to the open road in style without breaking the bank - these micro minnie campers are the definition of affordable luxury.

australia travel trailers

Cub Weekender

  • Well-crafted.
  • Ample storage.
  • Easy to set up and take down.
  • Pole storage isn’t amazing.

The Weekender is a brilliant camper from the ever-reliable Cub Campers. This model offers a great deal of space with a lightweight design that’s sure to work for a small family - comfortably fitting two children and two adults.

In addition, there are a ton of storage options available to ensure everything you need to bring with you has a place to go!

With this easy-to-set-up camper trailer, you’ll be able to enjoy your holiday in no time at all. Additional features include the pullout kitchen, which provides an excellent cooking area and optional extras like power packs, mini fridge packs, and more.

Overall, this is an affordable option that is ready to make you a happier camper on your road trip across the Australian continent.

australia travel trailers

Pod Allroada RT Camper

  • Lightweight and easy to tow.
  • One of the easiest camper trailers to set up and take down.
  • Affordable with a focus on value for money.
  • Average storage.

The Pod Allroada RT Camper is an interesting camper because it focuses heavily on plastic. That’s right, a lot of the core elements of the camper are, in fact, plastic, which significantly reduces the camper trailer's weight.

As a result, this baby is easy to tow! For this camper trailer, this rooftop tent is easily accessible by a ladder. A heads up…this isn’t the kind of camper that’s going to work for more than a couple.

Overall, this camper trailer is very small, more on the micro minnie side, but it’s a great camper trailer for couples. It’s got a large queen bed that’s comfortable, albeit thin. The windows provide great airflow, and you can simply just zip them up when it's raining.

With the fully fitted kitchen, it’s a great camper that’s going to make your trip comfortable and far more enjoyable.

australia travel trailers

Marlin Cruiser

  • Lightweight.
  • Great additions are included in the camper.
  • Value for money.
  • Very basic standard fit-out.

The Marlin Cruiser is simple, compact, and ready for adventure.

This is a brilliant small camper trailer for a couple looking to travel across Australia. This is a super affordable camper trailer, so you can also enjoy it without breaking the bank. Thanks to its ridiculously low weight of 280 kg, you are able to tow it using almost any vehicle.

This soft floor and roof camper is easy to set up and take down while providing enough space for a queen-sized bed/mattress. You can even use the other section for a smaller bed if you’re bringing along your child.

Overall, this uncomplicated camper trailer is exactly what you need for a cross-country trip. It provides comfort at a reasonable price.

australia travel trailers

Jayco Swift

  • Great use of space.
  • Perfect size.
  • The kitchen is exactly what you need.
  • Limited storage.

The Jayco Swift is a really interesting camper trailer. It’s small and compact, but when it’s out in full force, it’s incredibly impressive and spacious.

They’ve made this design matter, and their execution shows that. The floor plan means they’ve packed a lot of great features into the space without making it difficult to exist in.

With a fitted kitchen, bed, dining area, and cupboards, there’s a lot going on, but it doesn’t feel like it - especially with the excellent interior height Jayco has managed with its pop-up roof design.

Overall, Jayco has ensured their Swift camper trailer is one of a kind. It’s probably one of the best budget camper trailers out there, considering what it has to offer. You and your growing family will find a great use for this camper trailer and should comfortably fit two adults and two children.

australia travel trailers

Signature Deluxe II

  • The kitchen is very simple but great to use.
  • Great for off-road travelling.
  • Value for money.
  • The ladder could be better.

The Signature Deluxe II isn’t the best on the market, but it’s one of the more off-road capable trailers you’ll find. The rooftop tent is easy to set up, up top while the rest of the camper trailer acts as storage and kitchen space. A word of warning - this vehicle is suitable for a couple only, fitting two adults and two children in this camper will be tough!

Another thing to note, the ladder to get to the tent isn’t great, and it’s probably our biggest gripe with this camper trailer.

Overall, this is a decent camper trailer, if you’re young and active and don’t mind it’s a bit rough around the edges. However, you’ll be able to find good use in this model as it’s got just about everything you’d need for a successful road trip - especially if you’re going off-road.

BONUS: Brüder EXP-4

  • A great focus on tech elements.
  • Sturdy design using quality materials.
  • Truly an all-terrain camper trailer.
  • Expensive in comparison to any other option on this list!

Listen. This is a bonus because, in comparison to the other models, the Brüder EXP-4 is incredibly expensive. To put it into perspective, you could buy several Pod Allroada RT camper trailers for the price of one of these bad boys.

So, why mention it?

Well, it’s probably the best compact camper trailer out there. This thing is designed to be an all-terrain camper trailer fit with solar panels and many other incredible features. There’s ventilation, ample storage space, a queen size bed and enough room for a small family of four with the ability to put a tent on top - increasing your sleeping quarters to up to six people.

Additionally, there’s a fully fitted kitchen and numerous other elements such as independent suspension, roof racks, high ground clearance and LED lighting, not to mention this thing looks like it’s a NASA-inspired design.

Overall, while expensive, the Brüder EXP-4 is an incredible camper trailer. It’s simply hard to deny reality…even if that reality has a healthy dose of sticker shock.

You’ll be a happier camper with a tiny trailer!

So what are you waiting for?

It’s time to get one of these nifty small vehicles while the road still beckons! With Driva, you’ve got access to numerous options for financing your small camper trailer. So just head over to our quote flow, to find your perfect camper trailer finance options .

Want something a bit bigger? Check out our picks for the best camper trailers on our website.

Which is the best small trailer in 2022?

While it’s expensive, the Brüder EXP-4 is a great small camper trailer. With the self-levelling suspension, double bed and bunk options for children, and a bunch of included tech in the camper trailer, it’s hard not to put this as the best. The only problem is that in comparison to any other option on this list, it’s extremely expensive. This is a major downer.

Who builds the highest-quality travel trailers?

That’s a difficult question to answer when any of these brands could be considered for the honour of being the highest quality camper trailer maker. However, if we had to choose just two options, we’d choose Stockman and Brüder X. They’ve proven they can make some great quality models crossing various price ranges.

Which is the best small camper trailer for a family of 4?

It pains us to say that the Brüder EXP-4 offers probably the best sleeping arrangements for a family of four. With bunk beds, it makes it one of the few options where a kid is even able to stay in the camper. The second best would be Jayco Swift. The Swift can handle a small family of campers with ease.

Tough As Nails: Australian Overland Trailer Hits U.S. Market

Tighten the lug nuts and fill the jerry cans, ’cause the Aussies’ favorite camping trailer is now available in ‘Murica.

patriot camper trailer x1 overland

If your idea of a camping vacation involves an engine snorkel, or if you think near-vertical rock faces look like parking spaces, this, my unhinged friend, is the trailer for you.

Voted Camper Trailer Australia Magazine’s camper trailer of the year four years running, Patriot Campers made its U.S. launch last week. And that’s good news for overlanders.

patriot camper trailer x1 overland

Patriot Campers America: Exploration Outfitters

Oklahoma’s Exploration Outfitters became the official North American distributor of Patriot Campers. Previously, Patriot pull-behinds were only sold in Australia.

Patriot Camper: The 'Worst-Case-Scenario' Mobile

Being stranded in the jungle would be a bummer, but if you were driving around in this, it would definitely be less of a bummer, and you probably wouldn't get stranded at all. Read more…

With the launch, U.S. customers can order two of the brand’s trailers, the X1 and smaller X2. Sadly, Patriot’s overland trucks (see above) are still an ocean away.

Patriot Campers X1

The flagship trailer in the Patriot stable, the X1 offers the most space and standard features within the brand.

patriot camper trailer x1 overland

For living: A pop-up awning and tent contain a lofted king-size fold-out mattress. Integrated tent poles pitch the bug screen and canvas tent walls. Plus, the awning and walls that encase the kitchen and storage area feature LED lighting for moving around at night.

There’s no bathroom, but the X1 does have an outboard hot-water shower. And the hidewaway kitchen is comprehensive: Pull out trays reveal a 5.7ft.³ fridge, two-burner gas stove, kitchen sink, stainless steel workspace, cutlery drawers, and wet storage.

patriot camper trailer x1 overland

There’s also a front-box “man cave” that includes gas bottle holders, fire extinguisher, high-lift jack, utility shelf, and a swing-out gas barbeque. And, scattered around the sides and rear of the trailer, Patriot touts 2,000 liters of storage space.

For driving:  Independent dual coil shocks, a 40-degree departure angle, and nearly 19 inches of ground clearance mean this trailer can go over—or through—serious off-road.

Plus, it can carry up to 1,200 pounds of gear and equipment—two-thirds its own weight. Despite being rugged, a full monocoque aluminum body keeps the total weight under a ton.

patriot camper trailer x1 overland

Once parked, the adjustable air suspension lowers the X1 from drive (crush) mode to camp mode. And the whole shebang draws power off of two 120-Ah batteries with solar-compatible charging.

The X1 starts at $32,490 .

Patriot Campers X2

For thriftier overlanders, the X2 offers a smaller, scaled-down version of the X1. It’s designed more for weekend excursions, hauling gear instead of housing a family, and being less of a burden on the budget.

patriot camper trailer x1 overland

For living:  Unlike the X1, there’s no awning standard. Instead, the deck fits various aftermarket roof-top tents, or it can be used to carry watercrafts, bikes, and/or tents.

The gas stove is standard, but hot water and shower are optional add-ons.

As a result, the X2 weighs 1,500 pounds, almost 400 pounds less than the X1. So it’s a better fit for a Jeep Wrangler than it is a Humvee.

patriot camper trailer x1 overland

For driving:  The X2 remains capable despite its smaller stature. It sports 18 inches of ground clearance, a 35-degree departure angle, and independent coil suspension.

Exploration Outfitters has the X2 starting just under $21,000 .

Patriot Campers offer a lot of versatility and capability in a relatively lightweight, compact package. Its reputation translates to a hefty price tag. But if you can afford it these make for a stout off-road camping companion.

Especially since it’s no longer a world away.

Hit the open road and camp in comfort with the best travel trailers.

australia travel trailers

With so many brands, sizes, and amenities to choose from, it can be difficult to know which travel trailer is right for your next adventure in the great outdoors . Paige Bouma, executive vice president of sales and operations of Trader Interactive, knows a thing or two about RV travel. She has been taking RV vacations with her family for years, often traveling for 30 weekends a year. According to Bouma, towable RVs (like travel trailers) are great for camping , and there are a number of choices to consider. "Families looking to experience the great outdoors have several choices when it comes to trailers they can tow behind their car, SUV, or pickup," she said. "The traditional travel trailer comes in a variety of lengths and weights, and provides a multitude of amenities and a sleeping capacity for any size family to go camping."

With this in mind, we've rounded up 13 of the best travel trailers so you can plan your next road trip . Whether you're a first-timer looking for tips to get started or a frequent traveler trying to decide on your next RV rental , this list includes fan favorites like Airstream, Winnebago, and Jayco travel trailers, ranging from luxury vehicles to small and lightweight campers.

1. Airstream Classic Smart Trailer

Airstream travel trailers are among the most luxurious, spacious, and advanced towable RVs. They say not to mess with a good thing, but Airstream's new and improved Classic Travel Trailer is an exception. This elegant and roomy travel trailer is best for long trips, with lots of space and innovative amenities, like a heated bathroom and handcrafted cabinetry. Now, this iconic trailer has smart-control technology, allowing you to adjust the lights, awning, and air-conditioning as well as monitor propane, battery, and tank levels from your phone. This trailer can be between 30 and 33 feet long and can sleep up to five people with four different floor plans. Airstream is currently working on more improvements for future RVs, including off-road capabilities and advanced electric vehicle compatibility.

2. Winnebago Micro Minnie

Winnebago travel trailers are beloved in the RV world, and the Winnebago Micro Minnie is one of their most popular options, even winning the RV News Top Lightweight Towable Trailers Award in 2021. This compact, seven-foot-wide trailer offers a number of floor plans to choose from, with features like a spacious kitchen with a sink, a double-door refrigerator, a microwave, and a cooktop. Each floor plan also has windows designed for cross ventilation. With a starting weight of 3,360 pounds , the Micro Minnie is the perfect tow for electric vehicle owners. It also comes solar-ready, with a spacious, walkable roof. With certain packages, the trailer even includes off-road tires, perfect for the boondock explorer. Once you've settled into your campground, take the fun outside with its patio speakers and a power awning featuring LED lighting.

3. Jayco Jay Flight

The Jayco Jay Flight has been a family favorite for years. This travel trailer has a large range of floor plans, offering options with luxurious kitchens featuring stainless steel appliances, comfortable seating, spacious lounge areas, and more. Jayco's elite package offers solar prep, which, depending on your rig, comes with corresponding batteries, inverters, and Go Power! kits for sidewall and roof-mount prep. It's important to keep in mind that certain floor plans may exceed an electric vehicle's towable weight limit. Jayco prides itself on its craftsmanship and construction so you know this trailer can handle any adventure you embark upon.

4. TAB Teardrop Camper

If you're looking for a small travel trailer, the TAB Teardrop Trailer might be the best choice for you. This nuCamp RV is perfect if you're traveling alone or with a partner. The Convenience Package comes with a solar roof package, perfect for electric vehicles.

5. Happier Camper Traveler

6. KZ Durango Half-Ton

The KZ Durango Half-Ton RV is a fifth wheel trailer that offers eight unique floor plans, complete with a washer and dryer, maple-glazed farmhouse-style carpentry, an electric fireplace, a double-door refrigerator, and so much more. The Hideout has several sizes and floor plans, and it comes with a three-year limited structural warranty, LTE and Wi-Fi antenna, tinted windows, high-quality kitchen appliances, and more. Most floorplans are towable by standard cars, however, the model's heft makes it durable to sustain off-road bumps and swerves. The Hideout features a walkable roof and multiple options for SolarFlex™ solar panels, providing high-quality energy great for electric vehicles.

9. Forest River Alpha Wolf

The lightweight Alpha Wolf trailer from Forest River's Cherokee line was named "Best in Show" by RV News in 2018. According to the Forest River site, the Cherokee Alpha Wolf "offers the best mix of floor plan diversity and top-shelf amenities while at the same time creating a tougher, lighter, better insulated shell." The interiors of this travel trailer look beautiful and modern while providing areas to cook, relax, and dine. Alpha offers multiple packages to personalize your trailer experience, including the Juice Package for all your solar needs.
