Severance is Cleveland’s musical home for symphonic music and other presentations, including the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Concert Hall and Reinberger Chamber Hall. We are strongly committed to making everyone feel welcome. The doors to Severance open three hours prior to most performances.

The most convenient parking option is Case Western Reserve University's (CWRU) Lot 29 Campus Center Garage. The garage is located directly adjacent to Severance Music Center off East Boulevard, and provides stair and elevator access to the hall.

Availability is limited, and pre-paid parking passes for the garage can be added for select performances during checkout.

Accessibility Services

Below is a list of the features and services that The Cleveland Orchestra has made available in the Jack, Joseph, and Morton Mandel Concert Hall at Severance for this concert.

Wheelchair Access & Seating

Our venue’s seating has reserved special areas for those attending with the use of a wheelchair. These seating options are available during your seat selection across seating price levels. Ushers are available to assist, especially in the event of a General Admission concert.

There is barrier-free entry to Severance Music Center with automatic sliding doors at our garage entrance on Lower Level One in the CWRU Campus Center Garage. There is an elevator for wheelchair access in the center of the garage for traveling from Lower Level Two (the lowest level) to Lower Level One (the level of our arrival entrance). The Euclid Avenue entrance to Severance is best suited for wheelchair entry, with a convenient drop-off area designated at the curb.

Companion Wheelchair Seating

Wheelchair companion seating is available for purchase online and through Severance Ticket Services. Look for a "C" shape on the seating map when making your selection. 

Assistance for the Deaf or Hard of Hearing

Infrared Assistive Listening Devices (ALDs) are available without charge for most performances in the Jack, Joseph, and Morton Mandel Concert Hall. Please request one in advance online or by calling the House Manager’s office. You will be asked to provide a driver’s license or ID card upon arrival, which will be held until the return of the device. Head Ushers can explain how to use the ALD.

Interpretive services may be available for certain events at Severance.  Prior arrangements should be made four weeks in advance. Appropriate seat locations may be necessary. TTY line access is available at the public pay phone in the Security Office located at the garage entrance.

Assistance for the Blind or Persons with Low Vision

Large Print Programs are available for most Cleveland Orchestra performances in the Jack, Joseph, and Morton Mandel Concert Hall.  These are available at the Coat Room locations or from Head Ushers on each level of the Concert Hall, and at Concert Previews.

For select vocal performances, Braille texts may be available on request with 2 weeks’ notice.

Service Animals

Trained guide dogs and service animals are welcome at Severance. If you have any questions, please contact the Ticket Office or the House Manager.

All Smith Lobby restrooms are fully accessible. In addition, private family-accessible restrooms are located in the Smith Lobby and off the Dress Circle Lobby.

Cleveland’s Progressive Field to host Elton John on farewell tour

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Elton John ’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour is scheduled to play Progressive Field on Saturday, July 30, 2022.

Tickets will go on sale Wednesday, June 30, 2021, for the tour’s North American concerts. An Amex presale runs noon Wednesday, June 23, through 10 p.m. Tuesday, June 29.

The concert is part of John’s 30-date North American and European stadium tour. It kicks off May 27, 2022, in Frankfurt.

Progressive Field does not hold many concerts. Billy Joel played there in 2017, as did Luke Bryan. Jason Aldean also performed at the stadium. Jimmy Buffet played in 1995 when it was Jacobs Field. Team officials go to great lengths during concerts to preserve the field, which often must be in condition for baseball soon after the show. For Joel, a specialized plastic matting was laid down.

The North American leg will begin at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia on Friday, July 15, 2022.

His final American tour shows are set for Dodger Stadium on Nov. 19-20, 2022.

In 2023, John is planning shows in Auckland, New Zealand, and Australia to wind down the tour.

When John plays Cleveland he will be 75 years old.

Cleveland Native Brings "The Music of Billy Joel and Elton John" to Playhouse Square

Michael Cavanaugh doesn’t bill himself as a tribute act.

Those who buy a ticket to his show, The Music of Billy Joel and Elton John playing Feb. 11 at the KeyBank State Theatre, won’t see a guy trying to impersonate the Piano Man or donning knockoffs of the Rocketman’s flamboyant stage costumes.

But the 49-year-old Middleburg Heights native does sound an awful lot like Joel when he performs the pop-rock star’s biggest hits, so much so that Joel suggested Cavanaugh play and sing his songs in the hit Broadway musical Movin’ Out . Joel’s own mother gave Cavanaugh what might be the biggest compliment he’s ever received at an opening-night party in 2002.

“She said to Billy and I, ‘I can’t tell you two apart!’” Cavanaugh remembers. “I don’t necessarily think I sound like Billy. But when I sing his songs, they kind of come out the way they went in.” 

The story of how Cavanaugh developed the two-hour-plus show, half of which is devoted to playing his musical hero’s songs, is the you-can’t-make-this-up stuff of which dreams are born. During a multi-year stint playing the New York-New York Hotel & Casino piano bar in Las Vegas, Cavanaugh met Joel’s tour manager, Max Loubiere, and stayed in touch with him. On Valentine’s Day 2001, Loubiere called Cavanaugh and announced he was bringing Joel to catch his act that night.

“Of course, I was completely freaking out, losing my mind,” Cavanaugh admits. But he wowed Joel with an animated rendition of his request, Jerry Lee Lewis’ “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On.”

“It came time for the piano solo, and I’m jumping on and off the piano, playing with my feet, playing with my butt. … He was loving it. He was fist-pumping and hooting and hollering,” Cavanaugh recalls. By the end of the set Joel was at the bar’s second dueling piano, joining Cavanaugh for the Beatles’ “With a Little Help From My Friends” and Elvis Presley’s “Don’t Be Cruel.”

“He ran up to me, and he gave me a hug and said, ‘Great to meet you, kid. I gotta go,’” Cavanaugh says of Joel’s hasty exit from the rapidly filling little bar. “I wasn’t sure I’d ever see him again. I just thought, This is the coolest thing that’s ever happened to me.” 

Joel surprised Cavanaugh by inviting him to dinner and both of his concerts with John the following weekend. In June 2001 Cavanaugh flew to New York City to successfully audition for the part of the Piano Man in Movin’ Out — a role for which he would receive Tony and Grammy nominations. When the musical closed in late 2005 after a three-year run, Cavanaugh returned to Las Vegas and developed a performance of Joel’s music with various symphonies.

Joel had made the show possible by generously removing the standard Broadway contract stipulation that cast members refrain from performing a production’s music anywhere else.

Cavanaugh slips one or two original songs from his 2009 release In Color and 2017 effort The Way I Hear It in a set list that includes Joel’s “Piano Man” and “It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me” as well as John’s “Bennie and the Jets,” “Crocodile Rock” and “I’m Still Standing.” (His personal favorites are Joel’s “Scenes From an Italian Restaurant” and John’s “Honky Cat.”) During the pandemic, he began livestreaming performances of original material on Facebook and YouTube. 

“It’s very satisfying for me to do that,” he says. “[But] I never get frustrated that I perform these songs by other artists. When I’m onstage, I’m really an entertainer first. And I want to do anything I can to get that audience excited so they have the time of their lives.”

Elton John & Billy Joel, Face 2 Face Tour Headed to T-Mobile Center Dec. 1

Elton John and Billy Joel, the most successful and longest-running concert pairing in pop history, will bring their wildly successful Face 2 Face tour to T-Mobile Center on December 1, 2009 at 7:30pm. Since kicking off the 2009 Face 2 Face tour in March 2009, the duo have performed over 40 sold out concerts in front of nearly three-quarters of a million people.

Elton and Billy open the concert with a series of duets, playing twin pianos and trading vocals. Each artist then performs a set with his own band. A grand finale brings the two superstars and their supporting musicians back together for a closing encore. This includes some of both Elton and Billy’s greatest hits along with an unpredictable selection of rock and roll classics.

Tickets go on-sale this Saturday, October 24 at 10:00 am through all Ticketmaster outlets, ticketmaster.com or charge by phone at 1.800.745.3000.

Concert dates announced for the fall 2009 segment of the Face 2 Face tour include Kansas City, Oakland, CA, San Jose, CA, Salt Lake City, UT, Portland, OR and two shows in Seattle, WA.

“I love touring with Billy. I have the greatest respect for him and we’re such good friends,” Elton said.

"The great thing about performing with Elton is that he is such a good piano player and that makes me have to dig deep to keep up with him, not to mention I’ve got the best seat in the house-only one piano away from Elton John!” said Billy.

“T-Mobile Center is honored to host our first ever Face 2 Face performance featuring legendary artists, Elton John and Billy Joel,” said Brenda Tinnen, T-Mobile Center general manager and senior vice president. “Kansas City eagerly anticipates the return of Elton John and Billy Joel to T-Mobile Center after selling out shows in our inaugural year.”

Elton and Billy played the first date of their co-headlining Face 2 Face tour on July 8, 1994 at the 62,000-capacity Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia PA. That Veterans Stadium concert began a run of 21 sold-out performances in 13 cities and established a winning formula for all future Face 2 Face concerts. The duo last toured together in 2003.

Perhaps the high point of that 1994 maiden voyage was the series of five concerts at 75,000-capacity Giants Stadium in New Jersey. In his review of the July 22 performance, Neil Strauss of the New York Times wrote: “Musically, the two gifted, idiosyncratic artists exist in the nether world between pop and rock, where Broadway show tunes, classical compositions, ragtime, gospel and rock-`n’-roll mingle freely.”

  The 1994 Face 2 Face Tour played its final concert August 20 at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, FL. It had become one of the ten biggest US tours of all time. In March and April 1995, the Face 2 Face Tour returned for twelve encore performances at some of the country’s largest stadiums.

Three years later, the tour that conquered North America took Europe, Japan and Australia by storm with a total of 30 performances.

Elton and Billy last toured together in 2003 with 24 sellouts. There could be no doubt that Face 2 Face starring Elton and Billy was according to Billboard, “the most successful touring package of all time.”

Billy Joel and Rod Stewart – two of the most respected recording artists in history – have announced a one-night-only performance at Cleveland Browns Stadium in Cleveland, OH on Friday, September 13th. The iconic musicians will each perform their most beloved songs from throughout their illustrious careers. The spectacular show promises to be an unforgettable evening of live music.

Tickets will go on sale to the general public beginning Friday, February 2nd at 10 am EST via Ticketmaster . Citi cardmembers will have access to presale tickets beginning Monday, January 29th at 10 am EST until Thursday, February 1st at 10 pm EST.

This is the third show Joel has announced today as the legendary Piano Man is known for sharing one date at a time, usually weeks apart. Earlier, Joel and Sting announced a joint performance at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas for November 9th and The Alamodome in San Antonio, TX for October 25th. The pair will begin their joint headlining run on February 24th at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa with stops at Petco Park in San Diego on April 13th, and Busch Stadium in St. Louis on September 27th. Joel and Stevie Nicks who began the joint One Night Only run in 2023, will continue to tour together with performances at AT&T Stadium in Arlington on March 9th and at Chicago’s Soldier Field on June 21st.

Joel has also announced solo shows for Seattle’s T-Mobile Park for May 24th and Denver’s Coors Field on Friday, July 12th.

New York’s quintessential son is one of the greatest musicians of our time. He began Madison Square Garden’s first-ever music franchise in January 2014 that continues to this day, performing one show at The Garden each month. Joel’s record-breaking residency will end in July 2024 , a little more than ten years after it first began, marking Joel’s 150th lifetime show, which have all sold out at the venue. Joel’s MSG shows have redefined the concept of residency. The scope and ambition of Joel’s residency, where he has played once a month at Madison Square Garden, is unprecedented.

This summer, Joel will also perform his first-ever show in Cardiff and his only European performance in 2024. Joel will be performing a one-off show at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on Friday, August 9th, joined by special guest Chris Isaak.

Joel has been added to the performance lineup for the 66th Grammy Awards for Sunday, February 4th in Los Angeles. He will perform following the release of “ Turn the Lights Back On ,” his first new single in decades.

Billy Joel and Rod Stewart to play Cleveland Browns Stadium together Sept. 13

The Piano Man and the Smiler will take the field at Cleveland Browns Stadium this summer.

Officials with the city and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame announced Thursday that Billy Joel and Rod Stewart will play here together for the first time on Sept. 13.

Joel was inducted into the Rock Hall in 1999. Stewart has been inducted both for his solo work, in 1994, and as a member of the Faces in 2012.

Destination Cleveland CEO David Gilbert touted the billions in economic impact from tourism, and he said data for 2023 shows impressive results compared to similarly sized markets.

“We continue to beat our peers in growth,” he said. “It supports 70,000 jobs in the county."

Joel’s current tour has been ongoing since 2013, bringing him to Cleveland most recently in 2017. The bulk of the tour has been a residency at Madison Square Garden.

Stewart last played here in 2021. Both performers found fame in the 1970s alongside Elton John, Genesis, KISS and several other acts, which have launched farewell tours in recent years.

Barry Gabel, senior vice president of marketing with Live Nation, said there will be no shortage of people who can sell out stadiums in the future.

"Last year we had a baby band play here and sold out 50,000 tickets: Machine Gun Kelly,” he said. “So, these acts are there, the next pantheon of young artists."

Tickets for the Cleveland show go on sale Feb. 2 for the general public. Rock Hall CEO Greg Harris expects tickets to “explode” out of the box office.

“Come to Cleveland, fill up our hotels, enjoy great music, enjoy great museums, come to the Rock and Roll Capital of the World,” he said.

ANTHONY Mara

Adelaide-based, Anthony Mara has been touring his Billy Joel Show since 2017, that’s seen him play to capacity theatres and concert halls across the country’s metro and regional towns.
