Seychelles Tours & Vacations

People on Source d'Argent beach, with a bright blue sky and turquoise water in the Seychelles

Check out the world’s top-rated beaches and you’ll find the Seychelles making the cut time and time again.

It’s no secret the Seychelles is the ultimate paradise, but you can still find a piece of island nirvana away from the crowds. Take island hopping to the next level by cruising between the white sandy coastlines, sampling Creole cuisine, and dropping anchor in the perfect spot to plunge into crystal-clear waters. The Seychelles is described as the   Galapagos  of the Indian Ocean, with its diverse marine habitats. On our Seychelles tours, you can meet an old giant tortoise; snorkel along coral reefs surrounded by tropical fish, and hike through mangrove forests to see rare (unusually-shaped) coconut trees while spotting species of squawking parrots above.

Culture and history.

It’s hard to believe Seychelles were uninhabited for centuries, except for the odd ship stopping in, as the islands were found by explorers traversing ancient trade routes in the Indian Ocean. One of the first known records of the archipelago was by Arab traders in 851 AD. The land remained without a permanent settlement for centuries until the French, having already established colonies on Mauritius and Reunion, made claim to Seychelles in 1756, ruling for nearly 50 years before the British took over during the Napoleonic Wars. The nation gained independence at the start of the twentieth century. Due to its intermingled history, you’ll find a harmonious diversity throughout Seychelles with the population largely being of African, French, Indian, and Chinese descent. Catholicism is the most widely followed religion (80 percent of the population), followed by Islam, Hinduism, and a mix of local beliefs. Although the nation has a more recent history of British colonization, Creole influences still strongly exist today – through the arts, the food, and the language.

Eating and drinking

The Seychelles hold a tantalizing fusion of cuisines, mirroring the diverse cultural influences found throughout the islands. Not surprisingly, seafood is a major staple in local dishes, and you’ll find super fresh local ingredients like barracuda, tuna, or octopus blended with a variety of spices. Rice, coconut milk, and curry are the foundation flavors across most of the seafood, vegetarian, and various meat dishes you’ll find on offer. An abundance of tropical fruit is grown locally on the islands with the most common being papaya, mangoes, bananas, and the versatile breadfruit – also found in many Seychellois meals.

Must-try dishes of the Seychelles

1. Caris masala

A typical spiced curry served with a combination of seafood or vegetables – with a mixture of cumin, fenugreek, cloves, saffron, coriander, and mustard seeds.

2.   Fruit bat   curry

Yep, that’s right. It’s a traditional meal that still holds a place at some of the longstanding restaurant establishments around the islands.

3. Shark chutney

A typical dish found in the Seychelles – made with boiled shark meat that has been finely mashed and mixed with onion, pepper, salt, and turmeric, with fresh lime juice squeezed over the top.

4. Banana in coconut milk

A large ripe banana cooked in coconut milk and sugar – absolutely delicious. This is a popular local dessert and a must-try in the Seychelles.

Geography and environment

You can find 115 islands in the archipelago of Seychelles, located about 2,300 kilometers (1,430 miles) east of Tanzania in the Indian Ocean – part of the African continent. The three main islands attracting visitor numbers are Mahe, Praslin, and La Digue. Seychelles holds a spectacularly diverse number of tropical plants, standouts being the carnivorous pitcher plant and rare species of palm known as coco de mar or ‘the sea coconut’. There are two types of islands – granitic and coralline – the latter located in the outer islands and made largely of, as the name suggests, coral reefs. The landscape is lush and full of tropical plants throughout the archipelago, with frangipanis found flowering along the white sandy coast and wild orchids lining the winding rivers deep inside the rainforest. Bird lovers are prepared: Seychelle warblers, magpie robins, species of heron, and egrets, among many other species, call the Seychelles home. You can also find giant tortoises older than a century and marine national parks harboring whale sharks, sea turtles, and a variety of tropical fish species.

Seychelles is bursting with traditional souvenirs and handicrafts, with batik clothing, woven baskets, painted fabrics, and all kinds of colorful jewelry found mostly in bustling markets. Go to Sir Selwyn Clarke market in the center of Victoria for quirky souvenirs and to see locals shopping for fresh produce. For the biggest selection of wares in Seychelles, head to the main island of Mahe where you’ll find art galleries, handmade arts and crafts, locally sourced body products, and ceramic pottery. Bargaining is not part of the culture of Seychelles, and prices are generally fixed. However, if you feel the price is high for an item in the market you can try to slightly negotiate.

Festivals and events

Semaine de la francophonie.

Taking place on the island of Mahe every year in March, this week-long festival celebrates the past and existing influences of French culture in the Seychelles. Featuring art exhibitions, French music, and a tasty array of French-inspired cuisine.

Carnaval International de Victoria (October)

This is by far the biggest party the Seychelles has on offer. Held over three days with parades, live music, costumes, and everything else that brings together a hip-shaking carnival!

Seychelles Ocean Festival (December)

A festival dedicated to all things underwater, this event involves photography competitions, guest speakers, events, and showcasing diving and snorkeling spots throughout the Seychelles.

Creole Festival (October)

Celebrating Creole culture in the Seychelles is an important part of recognizing the nation’s history and heritage. As part of the event, a traditional Seychellois wedding is held, with funky exhibitions and performances.

The Feast of the Assumption of Mary (15 August)

A significant day of recognition throughout the islands with a dedicated public holiday held every year on 15 August. Locals travel to the main festival held on the island of La Digue, involving a church mass and parade through the streets.

Seychelles travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do I need a visa to travel to the Seychelles?

Travelers do not require a visa to enter Seychelles. However, you must hold an onward ticket, have confirmed accommodation, and have sufficient funds for the duration of your stay. Entry requirements for Seychelles can change at any time, so it's important that you check the Seychelles government website or your nearest Seychelles consulate for the latest visa information specific to your nationality. You can also find further visa information in the Essential Trip Information section of your chosen itinerary.

Is tipping customary in the Seychelles?

Tipping is up to the individual when traveling in Seychelles. In restaurants, a service charge of between five to ten percent is often added to the bill so you will not be expected to leave an additional tip. If you receive excellent service, a little generosity can go a long way considering the low wages of those working in the hospitality industry.

Are you expected to tip while on the trip?

On the adventure cruise, tips are included for the ship crew and hospitality staff. This amount does not include a tip for your tour leader, so you may wish to set aside some funds for this.

If you are happy with the services of your trip leader and wish to tip, EUR 2–4 per passenger per day is an appropriate amount. It is of great significance to the people who take care of you during your travels.

What is the internet access like in the Seychelles?

Many hotels and some restaurants and cafes offer Wi-Fi. Free Wi-Fi hotspots are found in some public areas in the capital of Victoria, Beau Vallon and Anse Royale on the main island.

Can I use my cell phone while in the Seychelles?

There is cell reception on Mahe, Praslin, La Digue, North Island, Fregate Island, and Silhouette Island. Many foreign mobile services have coverage in the Seychelles, but roaming fees are high. You can purchase a local sim card for the network providers Cable & Wireless Seychelles (CWS) or Air.

What are the toilets like in the Seychelles?

Western-style flushable toilets are available on adventure cruises. You will also find flushable toilets in hotels and restaurants throughout the Seychelles. Public toilets are difficult to find outside the main beaches of Victoria.

What will it cost on the islands for a…?

Small bottle of soft drink = EUR 1   Beer in a bar or restaurant = EUR 2.5  Simple lunch = EUR 5   Three-course meal = EUR 50

Can I drink the water in the Seychelles?

Drinking tap water isn't recommended in the Seychelles. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Instead, fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water. Ask your leader where filtered water can be found – some places you stay may have drinking water available.

Are credit cards widely accepted in the Seychelles?

The euro is the standard currency onboard adventure cruises. Visa, Mastercard and American Express are all accepted for settling your ship board account. It is wise to travel with sufficient cash (in local currency) to pay for shopping on the island and for incidentals such as shipboard items, airport taxes and taxis.

Major credit cards are usually accepted by large hotels and western-style restaurants throughout the Seychelles. Ensure you have adequate cash to cover purchases where credit is unavailable.

What is ATM access like in the Seychelles?

ATM facilities exist at major banks in Mahe, Praslin, and La Digue but will dispense Seychelles Rupees only. Foreign currency can be changed at banks or authorized bureau de change only. It is a criminal offense to change money with unauthorized persons. Credit cards are widely accepted throughout the Seychelles.

What public holidays are celebrated in the Seychelles?

For a current list of public holidays in the Seychelles go to:

https://www.worldtravelguide.net/guides/africa/seychelles/public-holidays/

Is the Seychelles a safe destination for LGBTQI-travellers?

For LGBTQI travelers visiting the Seychelles, there’s little to worry about but some discretion is advised with open displays of affection as there is no openly gay or lesbian scene in the country.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting   Equaldex   or   Smartraveller   before you travel.

Does my trip support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. Trips to this country directly support our global Intrepid Foundation partners, Eden Reforestation Projects and World Bicycle Relief. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Eden Reforestation Projects

Eden Reforestation Projects are helping to mitigate climate change by restoring forests worldwide; they also hire locally and create job opportunities within vulnerable communities. Donations from our trips support restoration across planting sites in 10 countries around the globe. Find out more or make a donation World Bicycle Relief

World Bicycle Relief provides people in low-income communities with bicycles to mobilize school kids, health workers, and farmers in far-out areas – giving them access to vital education, healthcare, and income. Donations help provide Buffalo Bicycles – specifically designed to withstand the rugged terrain and harsh environment of rural regions – to those who need them most. Find out more or make a donation

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Private Jet Seychelles

Off the Eastern Coast of Africa, surrounded by the Indian Ocean, is a collection of luxurious islands laden with crystal waters, and vibrant green forestry. Seychelles is comprised of a few iconic destination cities, boasting oceanside luxury and unparalleled fishing, diving, and boating opportunities. Charter a private jet to Seychelles and take in its decadent ocean breezes and year-round sun, with your favorite drink in hand.

The largest and most inhabited islands of Seychelles are Mahe, Praslin, and La Digue. Each island offers a variety of tropical wonders and activity. Anse Intedance is a lovely beach on the island of Mahe, with sand as white as flour, and waters so blue it is lost in the horizon. Lush green palms and magnificent boulders create a barrier for this beach that is known for its larger barrelling waves. Fly by private jet charter to Seychelles and enjoy a meal at sunset at Banyan Tree Resort on Anse Intendance for dinner with a view.

On Praslin Island, the Anse Lazio beach is truly in the race for the finest tropical destination for those looking for seclusion, with its picture-perfect curling shoreline. A 20-minute hike through the tropical hillside environment is rewarded with a spectacular view of this beach. The calm and clear waters of Anse Lazio is surrounded by boulders that can be climbed for a higher vantage point. Walk the soft sands and let all of your senses take in the shoreline—and end the night at one of the nearby bars or restaurants.

If you ever find the strength to leave the beaches on the islands of Seychelles, the steep mountain terrain has been tamed to create a hiking trail that leads to a stunning bird’s-eye view. Morne Blanc Trail is situated on Mahe Island—following a slippery climb up this mountain, you’ll be greeted by a 360-degree view, 200 feet above sea level. Enjoy a picnic at the peak of the hike, where you’ll find yourself in reverie for quite some time.

Charter a private jet to Seychelles and sunbathe on the world’s most photographed beach—situated on the island of La Digue. Anse Source D’Argent is a breathtaking shore that is a must-see on your tour through the island coasts of Seychelles. Overlapping granite rocks on the shore are arranged to perfection—all by nature.

Warm turquoise waters are protected by barrier reefs at this access, which allows beachgoers to explore the waters without having to worry about sharks or dangerous waves. The beach is located within a protected natural area where giant tortoises live in their natural habitat.

Book your private flight to Seychelles with evoJets—the leading jet charter service for all luxury destinations.

Raffles Seychelles - Scenic Flights

If the beauty of the Seychelles is astonishing from ground level, it’s almost overwhelming from the air. Islands scattered like emeralds across an ocean of liquid silk, with fringing reefs and sandbars in kaleidoscope shades of silver and cobalt.

Great yachts, reduced to children’s toys. And shadows that break through the sea’s surface with an expulsion of air that reveals them as whales.

These are the wonders that wait for those who sign up for our scenic flights, offered via helicopter from our own private helipad.

Taylor Swift singing while wearing a silver outfit in a stadium

European cities hope jet-setting Taylor Swift fans will splash the cash for Eras tour

The superstar arrives in Europe next month – and Swifties, tourist boards and venues are already preparing

T im Brown, 44, and his wife, Marcella, 34, may not consider themselves bona fide “Swifties”, but when it was announced last June that Taylor Swift would be visiting their corner of the globe this summer they could not resist joining the scramble for a pair of tickets.

A post-pandemic appetite for live music events has fuelled huge worldwide interest in the American singer-songwriter’s Eras tour, which surpassed in $1bn sales in November to become the highest-grossing series of concerts in history.

The pop culture event of the summer will arrive in Europe next month, kicking off in Paris on 9 May and wrapping up in London on 20 August with 49 dates in between in Sweden, Ireland, Portugal, Germany, Poland, Austria, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and Switzerland.

The unique nature of the tour’s ticketing system, which was tweaked after a number of hitches last year, means there will be a mass movement of travelling fans who will not only be Swiftie in affiliation but swift-like in their willingness to travel across the continent.

In expectation of intense demand, Ticketmaster introduced a pre-registration system that rewarded some early applicants with access codes to the ticket sale proper, via staggered windows for each city.

Notionally designed to prioritise genuine fans over “scalpers” – people who buy and resell tickets for a quick profit – the pre-sales system also meant many fans registered for tickets in multiple destinations across Europe to increase their chances.

Taylor Swift performs on stage amid a sea of confetti

Tim and Marcella, who live in Norwich, registered not just for the nearest concerts – in London and Liverpool – but also in Amsterdam and Lisbon. The pair got lucky with a pair of €91 tickets in the Portuguese capital and have turned the trip into a weekend break. “I used to live in Lisbon so I thought why not kill two birds with one stone,” Tim said. “We booked ourselves flights and four nights’ accommodation the same day.” They are far from alone.

Katie Soo, the chief business officer of DICE, a rival ticketing company, said: “The excitement and uncertainty inherent in the ticket-purchasing process might have inadvertently incentivised fans to apply for tickets in multiple cities, thereby increasing the likelihood of travelling across Europe to attend the concerts.”

Hotel prices

Several European cities have already reported a sharp rise in demand for hotel and short-term rental accommodation over the summer, when the Swift hurricane will arrive. In Edinburgh, Liverpool and Cardiff, rooms at the Travelodge chain around Swift’s June dates have been sold out since August 2023, a month after tickets for the shows went on sale.

In Paris, where fans anticipate Swift to debut an updated version of the Eras show with songs from the new Tortured Poets Department album, 80% of hotels and apartments listed on Booking.com are already full up. In Warsaw on 2 August, only 9% of hotels listed on the same site are still available.

Not all of the 18 cities covered by the Eras tour are obvious tourism destinations. From 17-19 July, Swift will play three concerts at the 65,000-capacity home ground of the football club Schalke 04 in Gelsenkirchen in Ruhr valley, western Germany. The city’s less-than-familiar name prompted one US chatshow host to quip that “the place might not even exist”.

Yet even in Germany’s rust belt the influx of Swift fans is temporarily transforming the hotel market: any two-bedroom apartments that remain available are going for €800-2,000 a night, with cheaper accommodation available only in surrounding cities that are just as off the usual tourist track as Gelsenkirchen, such as Essen, Bochum or Herne.

Cities with stricter rules on allowing Airbnb-style holiday lets and a more limited stock of short-term rental apartments are reporting a particularly marked increase in rates during Swift’s visit, with about 30% year-on-year spikes in rental rates in Cardiff, Edinburgh and Milan, according to AirDNA, a data analytics company specialising in the short-term rentals market.

Of all the tour’s European stops, Vienna is experiencing the most notable impact on its rental market, with booking rates for the nights of Swift’s concerts recorded in February 44% higher than at the same point the previous year. By the end of March the number of nights booked in the Austrian capital for the length of Swift’s stay in the second week of August had risen by 430% compared with the same period in 2023.

When Luke Tilden’s wife, Tatjana, suggested last summer that the couple buy their 13- and 15-year-old daughters, Lena and Maya, tickets to a Taylor Swift gig for Christmas, the 53-year-old Briton initially waved it off. “There’s no chance in hell we’d get a ticket without paying through our noses, I thought,” said Tilden, who works as an interpreter at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg.

But after pre-registering for tickets in London, Paris and Munich, the Tildens got unexpectedly lucky for four tickets in southern Germany and have turned the concert visit into a mini-holiday: “We’ll visit the in-laws in Bavaria, enjoy the countryside, do a bit of hiking.”

The hope in cities across Europe is that this will be replicated on a massive scale, with fans’ excitement translating into generous spending sprees on food, shopping and leisure. In Stockholm, for example, where authorities are expecting 159,000 visitors to arrive from 135 countries in mid-May, the chamber of commerce has forecast a spending boost of €50m. “We hope the whole town will buzz from the Eras tour,” said Tomas Andersson, a spokesperson for the Swedish capital’s tourism board.

Whether fans will necessarily act like ordinary tourists, however, is up for debate. “Pop-culture tourists do not necessarily care about traditional buildings and authentic restaurants,” said Maria Lexhagen, a professor at the European Tourism Research Institute, Mid Sweden University.

“Joining up with other fan communities is stronger motivation, as is the idea that they might get closer to the stars themselves. Many of them will map out where Swift is spending her time in the city – they will seek out seemingly marginal but meaningful places like back alleys or coffee shops.” Venues may be hoping for a repeat of Sydney in February, when Swift swept into an unassuming Italian restaurant in the suburbs and sent its name into global media headlines.

A view of the exterior of Pellegrino 2000 in Sydney

In Stockholm the tourism board said it was expecting bookshops and secondhand clothes stores, rather than museums and royal palaces, to attract most of the arriving visitors. Some venues are being proactive: one restaurant within walking distance of the multipurpose Friends Arena in the Solna municipality is putting on a “Taylor Swift brunch experience” with a karaoke stage; the waterfront nightclub Debaser is hosting a pre-concert party on 16 May, an all-ages all-day party with a Swift-themed quiz on 19 May and an afterparty the day after.

Environment

As the Swift circus rolls across the continent, the transport infrastructure of urban centres will also be put to the test. Around the tour’s three-night stop in Dublin at the end of June, Irish Rail has announced additional late-night services to Cork and Limerick to meet an expected increase in demand. Extra tram and bus services are likely to be announced nearer the time.

Unlike rail operators, most airlines do not have capacity to charter additional flights. Due to yield management – airlines adjusting prices based on expected demand – a scramble for airborne journeys into cities that host the Eras tour is more likely to result in more expensive tickets rather than additional flights.

Officials at Lisbon airport said no additional flights had been chartered around Swift’s concerts on 24 and 25 May but that demand would probably be reflected in slightly higher load factors. A spokesperson for Amsterdam Schiphol said general aviation slots could be requested at short notice but nothing out of the ordinary had been logged so far.

Calculating the environmental impact of the tour with any certainty was difficult, experts said. “We can expect that some Swift fans will travel a long way to see one, if not several, shows across Europe”, said Stefan Gössling, a professor of tourism at Linnaeus University in Kalmar, Sweden. “But measuring the environmental impact of these trips is extremely difficult – it would involve a lot of guesswork.”

Swift fans queue to buy a merchandise

This did not mean the carbon footprint was negligible. “Every flight taken by a person adds to demand and hence influences supply considerations,” Gössling said. “The greater the demand, the more aircrafts are in service.”

The pop star’s carbon footprint is easier to estimate. Swift owns two jets by the French manufacturer Dassault, whose journeys are trackable. During the 2023 leg of the Eras tour, Swift’s planes spent 166 hours crisscrossing the US in about 75 individual journeys, though it is possible they were used by people other than the singer.

According to data available through the open-access aviation tracker ADS-B exchange, Swift’s jets caused carbon emissions of about 2,830 tonnes of CO 2 equivalent over the course of the US Eras tour – about 1,700 times the annual contribution of an average person.

A spokesperson for Swift told US media last year that in advance of the tour’s start in March 2023, the pop star bought more than double the carbon credits needed to offset all tour travel. Carbon offset credits are tradable certificates that allow purchasers to compensate for emissions by investing in environmental projects that claim to reduce carbon emissions, though recent studies have questioned the efficacy of these schemes.

Princess Anne to jet off on Royal tour just days before Prince Harry is set to return to UK

Princess Anne will jet off on a royal tour just days before Prince Harry is set to return to the UK.

The Princess Royal will travel to Canada from May 3 to 5 on an official visit to the Commonwealth country.

Prince Harry is also expected to return to the UK only a few days after his aunt returns from her tour for an Invictus Games event.

The Invictus Games 10th Anniversary Service was listed on St. Paul’s website for May 8, and on the official running order, the prince is set to speak at the service.

Harry’s wife, Meghan, is “rethinking” the trip as she doesn’t feel safe returning to the UK after Harry lost a court case over his police protection in Britain, according to a source.

Anne last visited Canada in 2023 when she visited the country twice within one month.

Apart from the date and country, the Palace has not released any further details of the princess’s visit.

In May 2023 the princess travelled to Canada to mark the 175th anniversary of the 8th Canadian Hussars.

Only a few weeks later in June 2023, Anne returned to attend a conference in Banff, Alberta in her role as President of The Duke of Edinburgh Commonwealth Study Conferences.

Princess Anne, who is widely regarded as the hardest-working royal, will be undertaking royal engagements two days before her royal tour and will get back to work on May 8.

On her trip to Canada last year, the Princess Royal was greeted by hundreds of people lining the streets hoping for a glimpse of the royal.

The princess has already undertaken an overseas tour to Sri Lanka and Dubai this year.

LATEST ROYAL NEWS:

・ Anne 'phenomenally popular' as King's sister 'highly trusted'

During her visit to the Middle East in February, the royal attended the Seafarers Awareness and Orientation Day in Jebel Ali, a port town in Dubai.

In January, the royal went on a three-day visit to Sri Lanka with her husband , Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, at the request of the Foreign Office.

On their trip, the couple visited the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery in Colombo and concluded the trip by making a speech about the relationship between Sri Lanka and the UK.

Last year, the princess undertook between 12 and 14 engagements in an average week.
