Tim Booth of UK band James on why it has taken 34 years to tour Australia

‘Horrendous’: Band’s bizarre performance

WITH a history that stretches back to 1982, there aren’t too many firsts for British band James these days.

However, after a few failed attempts, James embark on their first Australian tour next month.

It hasn’t gone unnoticed by very patient local fans — their Melbourne show has already sold out .

In the UK, James have had seven top 10 albums and a string of hits including Sit Down, Laid, Born Of Frustration, Sometimes, She’s a Star, Come Home and How Was It For You ?

In Australia, while Sound hit the top 30 in 1991, they’re best known for 1993’s Laid — a 140 second romp (produced by Brian Eno) that was also their biggest US hit when it was embraced by alternative radio once the line “she only comes when she’s on top” was airbrushed out.

“It’s a strange song,” James’ frontman Tim Booth says. “And it’s strange to think that’s the one that’s been representing you. But we have a lot of odd songs.”

Here the James frontman talks about training their fans to enjoy new music, stalking Nick Cave and falling out with Morrissey.

James formed in 1982 but it’s taken until 2016 for you to tour Australia. Surely there’s been offers in the past?

Tim Booth: Yeah, it’s fallen through two times before. I recall there was a festival a few years ago and then there were some floods and it was cancelled. You want to try and make it co ordinate with a few countries to make it financially viable, we’re a big band.

Will James be dusting off a greatest hits set for Australia seeing as you’ve never been here before?

I’m not sure yet. We change the setlist every night as much for ourselves as the audience. It’s to stretch us and make the concert in the present. I go to too many bands who look like theatre performers. The singer says the same thing to a different crowd every night, they play the same set every night. A Monday night set should be different to a Friday night set. Because we haven’t been to Australia we might cater to that to some degrees, people have missed out on a history with us. But we don’t this to be the only time we come, we’d like to come back within a year or two years, we’ve heard that is possible. We don’t want to give you the whole book in the first sitting!

There must be certain big hits, like Laid and Sit Down, that are fixtures each show?

If you look at our sets this year we rested Laid until the last UK show, Sit Down gets rested for a year or two. The song that’s the hardest to leave out is Sometimes . That’s been the grower for people. We had about 17 hits, we have the luxury of being able to rotate. We’re a live band, even though we’ve done something 14 albums. We’ve made some good records but live is where we’re strongest.

That 14th album, Girl at the End of the World, was only kept off the No. 1 spot by Adele in the UK this year. Some bands with a history struggle getting people to be interested in new music, but that doesn’t seem to be a problem for James?

This sounds cocky but we train our audiences over the years. They like seeing us improvise. If we play a new song it’s our challenge to make it as good as a hit. Obviously there’s nostalgia in a hit you can’t compete with, but we have to get present and make sure the new songs have something that people get excited by. Sit Down was played for two years before we ever released it. James is about improvising and taking risks. We don’t buckle on that, that’s who we are. If I play a greatest hits set I feel a bit of a fraud. It feels really uncomfortable. Afterwards I feel like I have to have a wash. We did one recently as we had to get a replacement guitarist, so we made it simple and played a few extra hits. I felt dirty afterwards, like a slut. I really did. What we’re about is a live concert, communication between a band an audience on that night in that place. It should change every night. I read a review of the Rolling Stones when I was about 18 and it said their shows were the same every night, and that they could be playing anywhere, and I thought ‘I’m not going to be in a band that does that, that’s embarrassing’. I saw Leonard Cohen three times, I love him, he’s the most articulate and intelligent man, yet his talks in between songs to the audience were the same every night. I was mortified. It felt like “Come on Leonard, for God’s sake, you’re a hero, don’t do this’. Whereas Sufjan Stevens was remarkable, I saw him three times, he wouldn’t talk for 90 minutes, then he’d do this rambling monologue for 10 minutes. The first time I thought it I thought it was scripted but it’s different every night. I was blown away. I became a singer because of Patti Smith, she was a poet, she improvised. Birdland is the reason I became a singer, that’s a nine or ten minute song, there’s bootlegs of it that go for 15 minutes. It could have crazy lyrics, that woman went so far out.

Nick Cave and the Roland S Howard’s band Birthday Party helped inspire a young Tim Booth. Picture: News Corp Australia

Nick Cave was another act who inspired you ... have you met him?

I lived in Brighton for a long time, you’d see him around in a black suit with a thundercloud behind him. I met him at his worst when he was really strung out after the Birthday Party split. It wasn’t comfortable. I made an early choice not to go down the tortured artist route he went down. But I love his music, I’m glad he’s gone down that route. He’s been the great songwriter of my generation. I saw the Birthday Party eight or nine times, that was a band. The two live performers I was most inspired by were Iggy (Pop) and Patti (Smith). The Birthday Party were the only band I ever saw who went further than Iggy. Nick Cave was totally matched by Tracey Pew and Rowland S Howard. The Bad Seeds are a great band but the Birthday Party are still one of the best bands I’ve ever seen. I hope Nick Cave is taking time for himself after everything that’s happened recently. I hope he’s letting the love in. You can really feel people want to love him. I don’t think in the past he’s been able to let that in.

Are you still friends with Morrissey?

No. I saw him at a gig a while ago, he came by and went ‘Oh, you’re still alive’ and walked on. He got pissed off with me, I couldn’t work out why but it was one of two reasons. One that I’m not a vegetarian anymore, it could have been that, I’m not sure, or the other was it came out that he got very close to me in the 90s. I’m not sure. I think it was the vegetarian thing, he seems to ditch people when they turn (back) to meat. I knew a Morrissey that was from much more of an innocent time. He was an absolute sweetheart, as were all the Smiths. I’ve seen Johnny Marr a few times recently, he’s a beauty.

Destabiliser: musician and producer Brian Eno

James have worked with Brian Eno many times. What were some of the more unusual techniques he used in the studio?

Brian loves to unsettle. When you get set in a pattern he loves to unsettle it. He can bring in a wind and string section and get them all to swap instruments. They’re classically trained, they can’t swap instruments but he loves to pull the rug out from under your feet. The reason why he made five albums with us, and we weren’t making him the kind of money other artists were, was that he loved working with us because we loved improvising. He’d walk around while we were improvising and would hold up sheets saying ‘Play more wobbly’ or ‘Change key’ or ‘Be erratic’. But he’d show it to one person, not the rest of us, just to destabilise our improvisation. It was just a joy to work with him. I’d love to work with him again, he’s the most intelligent man I’ve ever met. He’s very mischievous and playful, which is something people don’t get, he’s not an egghead, he’s naughty and fun

And he has a smell laboratory in his house?

Can you believe it? I think one of the concoctions was lavender and motorcycle types, he’d sent them away to laboratories to get made for him, this random mixture of scents. He’s got his finger in every single pie. What is he not exploring? He gave lectures on pornography in England. I rang him out to see if he wanted to come out for a meal when I was in London one time and he said ‘I can’t but would you like to come to a talk I’m doing to 200 scientists about the moon landing.’ And off I went. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldren had been given their own miniature cameras, they filmed their adventure, they were showing this footage for the first time with Brian’s album Apollo as the soundtrack. The adventures of Brian Eno!

Absolutely fantastic. James is a wonderful band. I've been a fan since I first got the album, Laid on cassette in high school. However this is my first time to see the band live. The lead singer, Tim Booth was a wonderful show man and the band was really killing it! The band members are talented musicians, there was a horn player and a mandolin even came out at one point. The crowd was entranced and loving the performance. If you get a chance to see James live, I really think you should. I didn't even get to see the main act, Psychedelic Furs but I wasn't disappointed at all. I completely got my money's worth! I would recommend looking into seeing James as a main act. I missed out on "Say Something" and "She's a Star" because there was no time for an encore but the crowd was really wanting one!

Wow, what an amazing venue, definitely going back there, James came on just like a support act, no smoke, no bells and whistles, just casually walked onto the stage, took their places and played an amazing acoustic set, so laid back but brilliant, then they left the stage, "see you later" said Tim

Sure enough, back on they came to the more familiar smoke and darkness, although Tim was on crouches, that didn't stop him from dancing, it did, however, stop him from his usual surf crowding, and dance away he did, along with just about everyone else in the venue when I looked around, what a fantastic night, thank you James, yet again, just brilliant, can't wait to see you again and again and again.

Been a fan of James since the 90's and had only seen them once before in Manchester in the Mid 90's (appx) but I am a music fan period and I see a lot of bands/singers but rarely does a gig blow you out of your socks and through the doors like the Llandudno event did - Five new songs on the set-list from the forthcoming album to be released in August - every new song was awesome!

There was something about the band AND the

audience at the gig but I couldn't put my finger on it and I left the gig with one goal in mind.... attend Parr Hall Warrington the night after... I tried but it was in vain due to the demand and was sold out 10 minutes after the tickets went on sale. (Source Parr Hall Box Office)

So, after obtaining a ticket from a great fan in Prestwich Manchester on THE DAY, it was on to the King Georges Hall Blackburn on the Saturday night.

I didn't think the band could top Llandudno but the feedback from Warrington was amazing and then they performed at Blackburn... I can only describe the gig as IMMENSE! By now I'm out of socks, blown off by the energy from the band and

the fans... An explosive unification of sound and love....

I needed a recovery period as I have disabilities, and it was Tuesday I was reading the reviews on Halifax - I just inquisitively had a check on a fan-fan site to see if any poor soul couldn't attend and would sell their ticket for Middlesbrough... lol

Up I went to Cleveland on Wednesday for the hat-trick. Honest opinion, I think the all-seater venue had a slight dampening effect on both band and crowd although it was still a fantastic gig, it just lacked that explosion that I experienced at the previous two, but take nothing away, this was still an awesome evening.

I dare say, had I not already been committed to another event on the night of the Finale to the tour in Scunthorpe a couple of days later, I'm sure I would have been heading over the Pennines AGAIN lol

The new album 'Living in Extraordinary Times' is set for release on 3rd August and to showcase the album the band are playing the rebuilt (2010) Scarborough Open Air Theatre on 18th August, with it's 6500 capacity, I can't see there being tickets available for long.

(In order to appease younger fans that may not get tickets, Scarborough had to ask Britney Spears to play the 17th August as a second prize for them (lol - Only joking) but it does highlight the attraction of this venue and looking down the list of Artists having played the venue, the names get bigger each year,

culminating in 2018 hosting The Script, Gary Barlow, Steps, (My sister tells me this group can sell-out 20-30,000 arenas??) Alfoe Boe, Il Divo and Bastille. THE Great Tom Jones having played in July 2017

The O.A.T is rapidly turning into a must play venue for the top artists and thus the arrival of James and the army of souls that are connected to this remarkable band, both musically and spiritually, will descend on Scarborough with a treat in store for many people at the gig AND within earshot -

What is certain to be the new anthem of James, MANY FACES, has the most poignant chorus sang by the entire audience for 2-3 minutes, (last tour appx's) in my opinion, if carried on the a low cloud it has the potential to bring the town and it's visitors to a standstill - this is an incredible experience both being in the audience singing along and hearing it.

Lead singer Tim Booth had encouraged the audience at Venue Cymru (Opening night of the tour) to sing along with the chorus, but I'm not sure even he and the other band members could have expected the reaction from them - EVERYONE was singing these touching four lines back to them. This for me and my three attendances was the highlight of the tour.

(although available to hear on you tube and was heard live on Jools Holland's show (09/06) the mobile phone recordings at the venues and the missing 3,000 backing singers on Jools's show couldn't reflect the soul caressing emotion the lyrics heard/felt in that fashion induce)

Llandudno 9/10 - Blackburn 10/10 - Middlesborough 8/10 (The all seater venue just took away a slight edge but still great) Overall 27/30 - As a gig attendee for nearly 40 years now, I like to think I can give fair critical analysis of a performance, the fact I attended three gigs in a week states a lot and using a score from 20 for a single event, 16/20 would be outstanding for any band/artist, only Amy Macdonald, Birdy, Nerina Pallot and Stiff Little Fingers (in my opinion only) have emulated James in the past couple of years..

If you ever can... YOU MUST SEE JAMES - It's a music experience you will never forget....Needless to say my ticket for the Scarborough event is already sitting in my drawer...

About James

When James Johnston released his debut single, ‘RAISED LIKE THAT’ two years ago, he never could have anticipated the whirlwind that followed. Six #1 airplay hits, 54.5 million global streams and two Golden Guitars later, James is easily Australia’s most exciting Country Music artist. This week the song that started it all has just been certified ARIA platinum.

But there’s more.

The bloke who grew up near the small town of Wingham in New South Wales, and sings of country life with an authenticity that makes a drover cry, a farmer sigh, a young jackaroo spin, a country girl smile and city folk wistful, will this Friday make Australian music history.

His album RAISED LIKE THAT (The Album) releases on Friday and will be Australia’s largest debut Country album ever, a body of work featuring 20 extraordinary tracks and a heartfelt celebration of country living. His sound is modern and unique with driving guitars, pounding drums and his gravelly vocal centre stage. He works his boots off.

The stunning debut contains moments that revel in joy and nostalgia, yet dares to dwell on the real hardship and adversity that faces so many people living in the country and on the land.

There’s anthems that will fill dancefloors and raise hands in the air, and quiet stories of empowerment, hardship and love that will bring tears to knowing eyes. His words are lived-in and he sings with incredible heart because he was raised like that and he did grow up there.

What’s more, James is a helluva live performer, having spent the past two years touring and performing on stages from Mount Isa to Melbourne, and all stops in between; he’s as at home in a studio as he is on the back of a semi-trailer in Deniliquin (where he happens to be this weekend).

“I wanted to share songs about the good but also the often less talked about side of country life. When it’s all said and done, I hope this album makes you feel proud of where you call home,” said James. “ Music has forever been the way I can express myself in the most honest way possible,” admits the singer-songwriter. “I’ve always loved albums that allow the listener to truly get to know an artist. RAISED LIKE THAT, is that for me.”

James called on his mates and longtime collaborators to realise his epic vision for RAISED LIKE THAT . Nashville-based hit-maker, Justin Wantz , racks up production credits on a mammoth 17 tracks, alongside Australia’s Gavin Carfoot and Liam Quinn , while Ilya Toshinskiy steps in to produce the rousing, ‘WE GREW UP ON’.

While nine of the debut’s tracks were penned by Johnston alone, he shares songwriting duties with the other 11with long-time collaborator, Nolan Wynn , producers Michael DeLorenzis and Michael Paynter and fellow artists Kaylee Bell, Jared Porter, Melanie Dyer , and Zac and George , among others. The empowering, ‘A COUNTRY GIRL CAN’, even credits Johnston’s wife, Taliarose Johnston .

Songs like ‘I STILL CALL IT HOME’ and ‘GOOD TO BE BACK’ celebrate small town values, while the more intimate, ‘THIS LAND IS KILLING ME’ highlights the trials and tribulations of life on the land. Songs like ‘GOT IT GOOD’ and ‘SEEING YOU SOON’ (featuring James’ eldest son, Koda) allow listeners to have a more personal look into James’ life, in which he shares the love and admiration he has for his wife and two boys but also the struggles of being away on the road.

Life on the road has been rigorous for Johnston, having just completed a national tour with Australian heavyweight, Morgan Evans . The star has appeared at countless festivals – CMC Rocks, Berry’s Big Country, Gympie Music Muster, Meatstock, Tamworth Country Music Festival – you name it! He’s soon slated to light up stages at the rowdy, Deni Ute Muster and Far North QLDs, Savannah in The Round.

Since releasing his debut single, Johnston has amassed a jaw-dropping 54.5 million global streams. Not only that, but his six #1 airplay hits have earned him a run of 110 consecutive weeks in the Top 20 of the Country Hot 50 National airplay chart. He’s been nominated for a QMA Award, an APRA Music Award and was a 2023 Rolling Stone Australia Award nominee for Best New Talent. But all his hard work was rewarded in January when he received two Golden Guitar Awards – New Talent of The Year and Vocal Collaboration of the Year.

James Taylor Announces 2024 Australian Tour

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

James Taylor and his band of experienced session musicians will be touring Australia in April 2024. The tour includes arena shows in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide, an open-air gig at Perth’s Kings Park and Botanic Garden, and A Day on the Green events at wineries in Mount Cotton, the Hunter Valley and Bowral.

Taylor will celebrate his 76th birthday shortly before the tour commences. Next year will also mark the 50th anniversary of Taylor’s fifth album, Walking Man , which is regarded as one of the American singer-songwriter’s lesser releases. Recent setlists have focused on songs from 1970’s Sweet Baby James and 1968’s James Taylor , as well as highlights from throughout Taylor’s six-decade career.

James Taylor – ‘Country Road’

The aforementioned Sweet Baby James featured many of Taylor’s best-known and most cherished originals, such as ‘Country Road’ and ‘Fire and Rain’, while his self-titled debut album was home to ‘Carolina in My Mind’ and ‘Something in the Way She Moves’.

The 2024 tour comes more than seven years after Taylor’s most recent Australian tour, a theatre and winery jaunt in February 2017. Prior that visit, Taylor’s trips to Australia had been scarce. His recorded output has been similarly intermittent in recent decades, but in 2020 Taylor released his 20th album, American Standard .

James Taylor Hints At A Last Australian Tour

by Paul Cashmere on February 1, 2024

James Taylor has fallen short of calling his next Australian tour his last ever Australian tour wording his comment “It be the last time I tour Down Under so I’m hoping you can all make it”.

James Taylor will start his Australian tour in Perth on 12 April, 2024.

Music icon James Taylor on his lifelong bond with Australia

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer James Taylor will soon return Down Under for his sixth - and perhaps last - Aussie tour.

Despite approaching 76 years old, the Grammy-winner is still selling out shows across the world.

Taylor will play seven shows when he brings his tour to Australia in mid-April and will also perform at A Day On The Green outdoor concerts in Queensland and New South Wales.

Music icon James Taylor on his lifelong bond with Australia

It has been seven years since Taylor visited Australia.

"It's been too long so we're all looking forward to it," Taylor told A Current Affair 's Deb Knight.

"We always love to come to Australia ... it always feels special.

"It feels like nothing else. Really.

Deb Knight talks to music icon James Taylor on his lifelong bond with Australia

"It'll have changed a lot since I was first there in the '70s you know, Melbourne is a very different city and you know, it's just such a fascinating place."

It's been quite the ride for the man who made music with friends in the creative counter-culture revolution of the late '60s and early '70s in California.

"It felt like a real movement or like a cultural change, a radical change," Taylor said.

"In Laurel Canyon, I stayed with Joni Mitchell at her little house on Lookout Mountain.

"Carole King lived down the street and then members of Stills and Nash were around," Taylor reminisced.

But he admitted it may be his last tour Down Under.

"There's nothing that I love better than then going, taking a long trip halfway around the world and finding an audience there that we can play to.

"But realistically, it may indeed be the last time I bring a band to Australia."

Eurovision band cancels all 2024 performances after singer’s cancer diagnosis

Eurovision entrant Voyager has announced they have cancelled the rest of their performances for the year after lead singer Danny Estrin was diagnosed with cancer .

After years of campaigning to take part in the song contest, the synth-metal band, who hail from Perth, were announced as the act Australia would send to Liverpool in 2023, eventually finishing in ninth place .

First forming back in 1999, Voyager is made up of lead singer Danny, guitarists Simone Dow and Scott Kay, bassist Alex Canion and drummer Ashley Doodkorte.

However last September Danny, 41, revealed his cancer diagnosis needed ‘immediate treatment’ and the band’s planned performances had been put on hold.

At the time the band had to cancel their European tour and now, six months on, they’ve shared more ‘bittersweet news’.

Posting a video together on social media, Danny spoke throughout and gave fans an update.

‘Some people have been asking how I am. For those of you who don’t know I had a very, very nasty cancer diagnosis at the end of last year and had some major surgery and have been doing chemotherapy ever since every two weeks which is probably the most brutal thing I’ve ever done,’ he began.

After explaining how he is battling ‘feeling c**p’ while undergoing the treatment, Danny said there was good news, which was his cancer was shrinking.

However, he did add that as he was battling ‘the most aggressive form of cancer’, it meant touring was not possible in the foreseeable future.

‘That’s really, really hard to say,’ he shared.

Rock band Voyager perform on behalf of Australia during the second semi-final of the Eurovision Song contest 2023.

‘Most of the things we had planned for 2024 in terms of touring we are unable to do.’

Jumping in, his bandmates then said they had to convince him to take some time out and reassured him time was needed to ‘recover’.

Despite having to cancel upcoming tour dates, the band said they would still be working on other projects and were looking forward to performing again as soon as possible.

‘We want to come back properly with a bang,’ Danny added, before also thanking fans for their ongoing support.

Commenting on the post, the official Eurovision account shared a message of support while also referencing lyrics from their song Promise: ‘Great to see you Danny! Sending you and the band lots of love – “It’s gonna be alright!”.

When announcing his cancer diagnosis on the band’s social media accounts last year, Danny explained how he was on ‘strict doctors orders’ to ‘not take this lightly, put my health first and get this sorted so we can be on stage again as soon as possible’.

Danny is the only member of Voyager to have been a part of the band since it formed.

They have released eight full-length albums, with their most recent studio album, Fearless in Love, released in July 2023.

The 2024 Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final airs on Saturday, May 11.
