Tour de Romandie 2023 overview

The 76th edition of the Tour de Romandie takes place April 25-30, 2023. The event brings together all the cantons of French-speaking Switzerland, Romandie, for a celebrated six days of racing, which also serves to promote tourism and culture in the region.

When the event launched in 1947, there were four days of racing. It was elevated to the WorldTour in 2011 and now provides six days of racing, which serve as a premier test leading up to the first Grand Tour of the season, the Giro d’Italia. Last year, organisers launched the Tour de Romandie Féminin which continues on the Women's WorldTour.

Irishman Stephen Roche holds the current record for most GC victories, taking the title in 1983, 1984 and 1987. There are 12 other riders who have a pair of overall titles, with Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma) reaching that achievement most recently with wins in 2018 and 2019.

Across the years the Tour de Romandie was only cancelled one time, and that was in 2020 due to the coronavirus global pandemic. The race returned in 2021 with Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) winning the overall, and then Aleksandr Vlasov (Bora-Hansgrohe) unseated Rohan Dennis (Jumbo-Visma) on the final day of racing to secure the title with a climactic performance in the uphill time trial.

As in past years, the Tour de Romandie route begins with a short time trial. The Prologue in 2023 will take place in Le Bouveret, a section of Port-Valais along the southern shores of Lake Geneva. New for this year is a mid-race individual time trial rather than placing it on the final day. The route hold a giant mountain contest from Sion to Thyon 2000 before the conclusion on May 30 with stage 5 in Geneva.

Tour de Romandie race history

The Tour de Romandie was founded in 1947 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Swiss Cycling Union. That first edition brought together 10 teams and a total of 40 riders for four stages of racing, Belgium's Désiré Keteleer securing the overall victory.

  • Tour de Romandie past winners

Between 1983-1987, Irishman Stephen Roche won the Tour de Romandie three times and still holds that record. Twelve riders have won the race twice, Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma) last taking a pair of GC titles in 2018 and 2019.

Eight Swiss riders have won the Tour de Romandie, Tony Rominger securing the crown on home soil in 1991 and 1995, while Pascal Richard went back-to-back in 1993 and 1994.

The race was elevated to ProTour level in 2006, then five years later to WorldTour status. It traditionally starts with a prologue and winds through the high alpine mountains of Switzerland for the middle stages, then concludes with a hilly time trial.

The mix of races against the clock and across the mountains makes this race the perfect tuneup for the Giro d’Italia, the first Grand Tour of the season which arrives the following week.

Tour de Romandie 2023: The Route

Tour de Romandie 2023 Route

The Tour de Romandie opens with a pan flat prologue of 7.2 kilometres long before stage 1 serves a route with a lumpy first part and a flat finale.

The finale of the 2nd stage looks promising for the punchy sprinters in the peloton. Two short climbs inside the last 13 kilometres make way for a flat finale.

It’s back to the chrono specialist on the fourth day of action. Stage 3 is a 19 kilometres ITT featuring a 6 kilometres climb at roughly 5%.

The Queen Stage is played out on a 161.3 kilometres route with an elevation gain of 4,157 metres. The finish climb adds up to 20.7 kilometres and the average gradient sits at 7.7%.

The last stage of the Tour de Romandie is a lumpy endeavour from Vufflens-la-Ville to Geneva. A bunch sprint or a successful are to be expected.

tour de romandie abandon

The  UCI WorldTour calendar has now been bringing together the world’s finest cycling races, including the Tour de Romandie, for several years. The biggest stage races—in particular, the Tour de France, the Giro d’Italia and the Vuelta a España—as well as the most prestigious one-day events, such as Paris-Roubaix or Il Lombardia, are also part of this calendar.

The quality of the sporting show is guaranteed by the participation of the best teams—and, therefore, the best riders—in the 37 events of the UCI WorldTour. The UCI WorldTeams, who are carefully selected according to ethical, financial, administrative, organisational and, above all, sporting criteria, participate in all the events on this calendar, which is an international circuit with individual and team classifications.

Thanks to the quality of its organisation and its strategic position in the calendar, the Tour de Romandie attracts the biggest riders.

Apr 28, 2016 – Australian Richie Porte was forced to withdraw from the Tour de Romandie on Thursday after suffering with stomach problems.

The BMC man picked up the virus overnight after Wednesday’s truncated first stage. “He has developed some gastro-intestinal problems and a fever overnight,” explained his BMC team doctor Dario Spinelli. “He is showing signs of a virus and has lost his appetite.”

After the prologue and first stage, Porte was 37 seconds behind surprise overall leader Ion Izagirre of Spain. “Of course it’s disappointing to stop, but I trust the doctors,” said Porte.

The 31-year-old has had a stop-start season so far since joining American outfit BMC from Team Sky, finishing second on the Tour Down Under and third in the Paris-Nice.

Remco Evenepoel and Jonas Vingegaard Suffer Broken Collarbones at Itzulia Basque Country

Stage 4 of Itzulia Basque Country was marked by a devastating crash, which left multiple top riders hospitalized.

63rd itzulia basque country 2024 stage 4

Among the injured, Visma-Lease a Bike’s Vingegaard suffered a broken collarbone and several fractured ribs and will remain in the hospital. Evenepoel (Soudal-Quickstep) also suffered a broken right collarbone and right scapula, according to each of the riders’ teams.

UAE Team Emirates’ Jay Vine also sustained fractures to three of his vertebrae, while Roglič (Bora-hansgrohe), already grappling with injuries from a prior crash, was forced to abandon the race but fortunately sustained less severe injuries and was attended to by medical staff on-site.

The incident occurred approximately 35 km from the finish line as the peloton navigated a tight right-hand bend within dense woodland. One rider’s slide triggered a domino effect, resulting in multiple riders tumbling down, some landing in unprotected concrete ditches. Initial reports suggest at least ten riders were affected, six requiring immediate hospitalization.

The severity of the crash prompted the race organizers to neutralize the competition, with concerns mounting as ambulances rushed to the scene to attend to the fallen riders. The extent of the injuries varied, with some riders, like Jay Vine of UAE Team Emirates, requiring hospitalization for further evaluation.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. However, local rider Mikel Bizkarra shed light on the treacherous conditions of the road, citing the presence of underlying tree roots that rendered the asphalt uneven and prone to accidents.

As the race organization dealt with the aftermath, decisions were made to neutralize the GC battle for the day, with only the breakaway riders continuing their pursuit to the finish line. Riders like Vingegaard, conscious but under observation, were transported to hospitals for further assessment.

Preview . From the 25th to 30th April 2023 the peloton will tackle the Swiss roads at the Tour de Romandie , on the French-speaking portion of the central European nation. It is a race that features opportunities for the time-trialists, sprinters, puncheurs and climbers, positioned between the spring classics and the Giro d'Italia.

With six stages on the road, two will be time-trials - with a prologue seeing the first leader's jersey given. The race provides terrain for different types of riders to succeed, however the main plot will be the fight for the overall classification which is set to implode in the Alps.

Profiles & Route Tour de Romandie 2023

The race starts off with a short prologue in the town of Port-Valais of just under seven kilometers. It won't create big differences, however it will set some order in the GC and provide a fair fight for the first lead of the race. Stage one from Crissier to Vallée de Joux will see the riders tackle a rather hilly day, however one that's suited to the sprinters. It features three categorized climbs and no descent following the last, however it should be too far for any team to fully commit to preventing a bunch sprint.

Stage two from Morteau to La Chaux-de-Fonds is a traditional day in Romandie, in which the race will be very open. The climbers have their first opportunity to strike, however it is a day where the puncheurs should have the advantage, whilst the sprinters can't be discounted aswell taking into consideration how the race is ran. Aggressive racing is expected and many riders can succeed.

Before the mountains, the fourth stage of the race features over 18 kilometers of individual time-trial. It will be in Châtel-St-Denis that this will take place, it's a long time-trial for the race's size however not a flat one. It's a tricky day where the uphills and downhills will be a serious challenge and many riders can surprise.

The final day of the race sees the most suiting day for the fast men. From Vufflens-la-Ville to Genève, the peloton will tackle a day that features two categorized climbs, however they should not be too hard or close enough to the finish to deal serious damage.

TV Guide - Where and When to watch Tour de Romandie 2023

The Favourites

UAE - Here UAE have a significant portion of their Tour de France block. Without Pogacar, but the team comes in with Adam Yates who should be one of the main favourites for the overall classification. UAE have Rafal Majka to provide support and also see Juan Ayuso finally start his season after a long knee injury.

Simon Yates - Against Adam Yates should be his brother. The two Britons could actually find themselves being the main favourites for the GC fight which could make for very interesting images. Focusing on the Tour de France this year, Simon has a different calendar to the traditional. He's finished second at the Tour Down Under and fourth at Paris-Nice, but will be looking for his first World Tour stage-race win since 2020 Tirreno-Adriatico.

Romain Bardet - Another rider who could really benefit from the absence of the big hitters. Bardet has refound himself when joining DSM and won the Tour of the Alps last year but he has never actually won a World Tour stage-race. Doing so, and at this point in his career, would be quite special. DSM lack the team support but with only one mountain stage he could find himself quite high after displaying good form at the Ardennes.

Sergio Higuita - The Colombian was the winner of the only mountain stage last year, however the GC was decided in the final time-trial. The ITT's will prove a challenge for Higuita but the 25-year old has proven to be capable of riding strongly in the high-mountains. He will be the main card for BORA, however the German team also line up with Cian Uijtdebroeks .

Johan Bruyneel on the Tour de France editions that Lance Armstrong won: "90% of the peloton was taking EPO"

Ion Izagirre - Perhaps the ultimate underdog. As is the case with Mikel Landa Izagirre was swarmed by a new generation over the last few years, but has this season ridden at an incredibly high and consistent level. Winner of the GP Miguel Indurain and third at Itzulia Basque Country were good signs at the beginning of April and he was on the attack a lot at Liège-Bastogne-Liège towards the finale. He could prove an interesting rider with the time-trials in a race that suits him. Last year's surprise podium finisher Simon Geschke isn't expected to be in the mix again but will make his presence felt.

Matteo Jorgenson - The American has had quite the spring. Winner of the Tour of Oman and eighth at Paris-Nice (where he rode quite strongly in the final day) were great signs, and then the leader of Movistar finished Top5 at both E3 Saxo Classic and the Tour of Flanders. He steered clear of the Ardennes and instead will have another great opportunity to net a strong result and is clearly a podium contender.

Michael Woods - Woods is back in great form. He finished sixth at the Volta a Catalunya and was active in the Ardennes including a fourth at Flèche Wallone. He should be up there in the climbs however it won't be easy to fight for a podium because of the time-trialing kilometers where he will suffer heavy losses.

Alexey Lutsenko - Lutsenko recently won the Giro di Sicilia and looked very good at Amstel Gold Race. However Flèche and Liège saw a Lutsenko again below his level. It could have been the build up fatigue, however with very little rest it won't be easy to see the Kazakh improving his level.

"Today's riders evidently don't really like cycling" - Eddy Merckx on how he sees Tadej Pogacar as a breath of fresh air in cycling

Kévin Vauquelin - Vauquelin has been riding under the spotlight of the big races and having a secondary calendar. Winner of the Tour des Alpes Maritimes and the recent Tour du Jura, Vauquelin definitely has the talent to fight with the best here. The high mountains aren't his best terrain but he's a talented climber and a good time-trialist, he will be an outsider for the GC.

Bahrain - Gino Mäder was second last year in the GC. He isn't quite consistent but in his home country motivation will be higher. After finishing fifth at Paris-Nice this spring he will for sure be one to keep under eye, with Bahrain - Victorious also having Damiano Caruso who is building towards the Giro d'Italia here.

Other outsiders could be present in the fight for the GC. The less prestigious field when it comes to GC riders opens things up which should make for an exciting and open race. Lenny Martínez , Thibaut Pinot, Geoffrey Bouchard, Egan Bernal, Rui Costa, Louis Meintjes, Steven Kruijswijk, Thomas Gloag and James Knox could all be within the Top10 under the right circumstances.

Prediction Tour de Romandie 2023 overall classification:

*** Adam Yates, Simon Yates ** Romain Bardet, Ion Izagirre, Matteo Jorgenson * Juan Ayuso, Sergio Higuita, Lenny Martínez, Michael Woods, Kévin Vauquelin, Gino Mäder

Pick : Adam Yates

Landa Breaks Collarbone In Another Tour Of Basque Country Crash

  • Order Reprints
  • Print Article

ADDS detail, results

Mikel Landa broke his collarbone in the Tour of the Basque Country stage five on Friday, with the race still reeling from a horrific mass crash the day before.

Two-time Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard suffered lung damage, broken ribs and a broken collarbone on Thursday, while Remco Evenepoel also broke his collarbone in the same incident.

Primoz Roglic, who had been leading the general classification, retired despite not sustaining fractures in Thursday's crash, while Jay Vine, Sean Quinn and Steff Cras were also hospitalised.

Soudal Quick-Step riders Landa and Gil Gelders were forced out of the race on Friday after another crash.

It was a fast day's racing on the 175.9 kilometre run from Vitoria-Gasteiz to Amorebieta-Etxano, won by Romain Gregoire who edged a bunch sprint to the line.

Spaniard Landa, who finished second in the race last year and in 2018, was pictured on a stretcher being put in an ambulance.

The Belgian team said Landa had fractured his collarbone and "will now undergo further investigation to determine the best path for his recovery".

Lidl-Trek's Mattias Skjelmose defended the yellow jersey he inherited after Roglic's retirement with Max Schachmann two seconds behind after finishing third on stage five.

Gregoire edged Orluis Aular in a photo finish to claim his first world tour win.

"I feel incredibly satisfied, it was a super quick day today and I'm super proud to have won," said a delighted Gregoire.

"I had to really fight right until the end, even up to the finish line I didn't know whether I had won, it was a little bit stressful."

The final stage on Saturday starts and ends in Eibar, featuring seven classified climbs over 137.8 kilometres.

Last year Vingegaard crushed his opponents in a carbon copy of the stage, also claiming general classification victory.

The Dane's injuries pose a question mark over his hopes of recording a third successive Tour de France triumph this summer, with the race beginning on June 29 in Florence, Italy.
