Justin Scott Dixon's extensive body of work has been widely acclaimed throughout the dance industry. His tracks and remixes have been licensed to heavyweight CDs including Sasha's GU San Francisco and John Digweed's GU Los Angeles and 'Stark Raving Mad' compilations. As an innovator in the legendary Orlando dance scene, Scott made his initial mark as one half of the DJ/Production outfit Friction and Spice.

Their imprint, Cosmic Records, was one of the most influential and best selling US breakbeat and progressive labels during the 90's. The Friction and Spice boys stepped into the big time with their recordings as the 'Cosmic Duo,' and were the first artists signed to Sasha's Excession label. After adopting the 'Voyager' moniker, Scott had an astoundingly successful run of 12" releases on labels such as Bedrock, Global Underground's Coded, Rhythm Syndicate, Fire and Steelyard.

He was also chosen to remix John Digweed's massive Bedrock stormer, 'Beautiful Strange'. Scott has been responsible for engineering projects including Cass & Slide's album (featuring the hit, 'Glad I Ate Her') and co-produced and engineered Cliff Tangredi's mighty 'Shimmer'. Scott also engineered Sandra Collins' Cream and Tranceport compilations, and most recently engineered her latest mix for Perfecto which also includes several of his own productions.

Select a year

  • Lows Only offered to fleet buyers, driver-assistance features cost extra, no hybrid option.
  • Verdict The Voyager is a minivan bargain but sadly isn't available for sale to regular Joes.

What's New for 2022?

The Voyager goes fleet-only for 2022, meaning it's no longer offered for sale to the general public. The base L trim has been dropped, leaving the LX as the only option. The van gains the new Uconnect 5 infotainment system, Stow 'n Go second row seats, power sliding rear doors, a power-operated rear liftgate, a new in-cabin air filtration system, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel all as standard. A Safety and Premium Group package adds blind spot monitoring, rear parking sensors, rear cross-traffic alert, automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, in-dash navigation, a larger 10.1-inch infotainment display, and SiriusXM satellite radio. Silver Mist is now an available exterior color.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2022 Chrysler Voyager starts at $33,610.

While you'll need to be a fleet customer to order it, the Voyager's value-oriented packaging offers plenty of equipment as standard. Those features include automatic headlamps, aluminum wheels, three-zone manual climate control, and a lot more.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Mechanically, the Voyager is identical to the Pacifica, using the same 287-hp 3.6-liter V-6 engine and nine-speed automatic transmission to drive the front wheels. In our testing, the Pacifica managed a 7.3-second sprint to 60 mph. Given this van forgoes some of the features that weigh down its brother, the Voyager likely weighs less than the Pacifica and thus has the potential to beat that time. Don't hold your breath for a hybrid. Chrysler will reserve that powertrain for the pricier minivan in its lineup.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

We haven't had the opportunity to test the Voyager on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy loop, but for reference, the last nonhybrid Pacifica we tested achieved 31 mpg. The Chrysler vans both earn EPA estimates of 19 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. The Voyager's 22 mpg combined score matches that of the Carnival and Odyssey, both chief competitors. For more information about the Voyager's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website .

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

As with the exterior styling, powertrain, and chassis, the Voyager's interior mimics that of the Pacifica, albeit with fewer creature comforts. You won't find leather seats, automatic climate control, or rear-seat entertainment here, but the Voyager provides the same Stow 'n Go capability that makes the Pacifica so versatile. Behind the third row, the Voyager boasts the same 32 cubic feet of cargo volume as the Pacifica. So, while we have yet to put this van through our practical space tests, we feel safe saying that the Voyager will be able accommodate what its brother could (i.e., 12 carry-on suitcases with the rear seats up).

2022 chrysler voyager interior

Infotainment and Connectivity

Chrysler provides a 3.5-inch digital display in the gauge cluster, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system in the center stack, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, and a six-speaker audio system with active noise cancellation. Bluetooth streaming and integrated voice control are also included but in-dash navigation, a larger 10.1-inch infotainment display, and SiriusXM radio are optional.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Looking for driver-assistance features ? You won't find many in the Voyager and nothing of the like is offered as standard. For more information about the Voyager's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ( IIHS ) websites. Key safety features include:

  • Available automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
  • Available rear parking sensors with rear automated emergency braking
  • Available blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Chrysler's warranty coverage is fairly typical for the class. The Toyota Sienna offers more value here in the form of a two-year/25,000-mile complimentary scheduled maintenance plan.

  • Limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles
  • No complimentary scheduled maintenance

“We were just a progressive metal band going about our business… the next minute we’re on the world’s stage!” But playing to 160 million people hasn’t changed Voyager

Eurovision Song Contest was deep in the Australian heavy synth-prog quintet’s DNA from the start

Voyager

Many artists would follow a mainstream moment with the most accessible music of their career. However, weeks after finishing in the Top 10 at the Eurovision Song Contest, Voyager have doubled down on their heavy synth-prog with new album Fearless In Love . Ahead of the last-minute cancellation of their 2023 European tour , Singer Danny Estrin, guitarist Simone Dow and bassist Alex Canion tell Prog about life after playing to more than 160 million people.

It’s early June when Prog video-calls Voyager frontman Danny Estrin, guitarist Simone Dow and bassist/singer Alex Canion, and the trio are midway through being smashed back into reality. This time last month, the Perth-based band (rounded out by drummer Ashley Doodkorte and Dow’s co-guitarist Scott Kay) were jet-setting in luxury. They were traipsing across Europe and getting interviewed by countless glossy magazines, all part of the run-up to them representing Australia to more than 160 million TV viewers live at the Eurovision Song Contest. Now they’re back home – and getting hammered by a storm so violent that it routinely wipes out their internet connection and freaks out Canion’s dog, Seamus.

“We played the WA Day festival [in Perth] yesterday,” Dow tells us, camera off to put less stress on the struggling WiFi, “and our booking agent sent us a video of the backstage area after we left. You should have seen the flooding! It was insane!”

Although Mother Nature is trying to quite literally rain on their parade, there’s no denying that Voyager became progressive music’s newest superstars this spring. Eurovision is touted worldwide as an international celebration of top-shelf songwriting (despite it frequently showcasing the most OTT pop possible) – and the synth-prog quintet had been chasing that rainbow from the moment Australia joined, in 2015.

They came tantalisingly close with their pop-prog anthem Dreamer in 2022, finishing second in Eurovision: Australia Decides , the nationally televised competition to select the country’s representative. This year, they finally got sent to the semi-finals when they were held in Liverpool, thanks to the electro- rock singalong of Promise .

Voyager advanced to the grand final and – after an 80s-throwback performance, replete with sequinned jackets, keytar solos and larking about on a Toyota MR2 sports car – finished a massively respectable ninth out of the 20 finalists.

The band couldn’t overcome the litany of public votes for Finnish rapper Käärijä, nor the jury’s collective passion for Sweden’s now-two-time winner Loreen. However, for five people playing prog in the isolation of Western Australia, it marked an underdog triumph.

“It’s pretty incredible!” Estrin exclaims. “We were just a progressive metal band from Perth going about our business and, the next minute, we’re on the world’s stage! The comedown’s been real, but it’s been dampened by the insane amount of publicity we’ve done. It’s kept that spark of Eurovision alive: we’re selling out shows, particularly in the UK. Eurovision has given us the platform to continue doing what we were doing on a much bigger level.”

The numbers certainly agree. At time of writing, Promise is Voyager’s biggest song, with more than eight million Spotify streams. The music video’s been watched two million times on YouTube, with the footage of that grand final performance firmly in the seven-digit mark.

Estrin’s vow of his band sticking with what they’ve always done going forward isn’t hollow, either. A week before Voyager played Eurovision, they released another single called Prince Of Fire . It was every bit as proggy and high-energy as longtime fans would expect. Plus, with its leaps from synthy verses to sturdy rock choruses, it was powerfully dynamic. No kowtowing to the masses with simpler songwriting or a saccharine ballad here, thank you very much!

“It showed that we hadn’t vastly changed,” Canion says. “I did see some comments when we released Dreamer: people were worried that we were gonna change our sound. But Prince Of Fire is an indication that we’re still the same band. We still have the same melancholy and dark heaviness about us.”

The single, alongside Eurovision entries Dreamer and Promise , appears on Voyager’s eighth album, Fearless In Love . And said album doesn’t just mark Voyager continuing to be Voyager despite the newfound mainstream intrigue: it contains the most out-there and genre-agnostic music of the band’s career.

The Best Intentions opens Fearless In Love with a pulsing dance beat, joined by Estrin’s graceful vocals before the band dive into some heavy, off-kilter rocking. Submarine smacks you into a wall of guitar hefty enough to belong in a TesseracT or Devin Townsend tune, before Twisted ’s synths and irresistible hook feel comparable to Signals -era Rush . That’s all before semi-title track Gren (Fearless In Love) wraps these 45 minutes up with an atmospheric and guitar-powered symphony. It’s arguably the most nuanced, evocative song Voyager have ever put their name to.

“ Fearless In Love is one of our synthiest and most melodic albums, but it’s also the heaviest,” Estrin summarises. “It was during the Eurovision process that we wrote it, so I guess we had a bit more focus on song structures and making sure there’s no extra fluff. We’ve got playful guitar solos and more prog than was on the last album [2019’s Colours In The Sun ].”

Dow adds: “We started writing around the time of Australia Decides and [the release of] Dreamer , and the writing process was very different. We did it all at Scott’s little studio in his house. That way we could edit and change things as we went along, rather than doing it all in the rehearsal studio. Then, when we recorded the album, everything was all done. It’s been a huge process, but it was one of the most rewarding and creative processes we’ve gone through with an album.”

It comes as no surprise that Eurovision hasn’t changed Voyager since Estrin, who formed the band in 1999, says that the contest was one of his very first musical inspirations. He was born in the North German town of Buchholz In Der Nordheide before his family relocated to Perth, and while growing up in Germany, Eurovision and classical music were his two greatest musical loves. “That knack for melody and a really catchy chorus came very early on and stayed with me from the very beginning,” he says. “It’s why I’m the catchy chorus guy in Voyager!”

Estrin started the band at just 18 years old – by which point, he says, “I was living and breathing metal.” As a result, their 2003 debut, Element V , packed more high-speed power metal drumming than later albums. However, it also flaunted a love of operatic melody, prog and keytar playing that still defines their sound to this day.

“The goal was to make music sustainable: to write and record music and tour around the world,” Estrin remembers of the early days. “Living in one of the most isolated cities in the world has made that very, very difficult because, wherever you go, it’s very, very expensive. It’s even more difficult when you play a niche form of music.”

Making things even harder was an Australian underground that seemed more smitten with extreme metal than anything else, as well as Voyager’s revolving-door line-up. Dow (friends with then-guitarist Mark De Vattimo) joined in 2005, six years after the band formed, and is today the second-longest serving member. Canion, who played with Dow in a thrash act called Psychonaut, joined in 2007.

“I immediately recognised that Voyager were one of the top bands in the scene,” the bassist says. “Danny had this X-factor that no other band had. He was driving forward a sound that was almost too daring for the metal scene to adopt.”

By 2012, Kay and Doodkorte had completed the line-up, which hasn’t shifted since. Three years later, with the announcement that Australia would become an honorary competitor in Eurovision, the band began campaigning to represent their country. They started the Twitter hashtag #VoyagerForEurovision and submitted songs every year, to no avail. Even after being the runner-up to singer-songwriter Sheldon Riley on Australia Decides in 2022, though, they were never disheartened. “It was never like, ‘We have to do Eurovision or we’re a failure!’” Estrin says. “It was more like, ‘However far we can get, that’s awesome!’”

Australia Decides was canned in 2023. Instead, Voyager were simply told over the phone by broadcaster SBS that they’d be going to Liverpool. When there, they had the same outlook: a win would be nice, but simply representing prog and band-made music to millions of people is already brilliant enough. “If you’re a Eurovision fan, you know the juries don’t like heavy music, or bands in general,” says Estrin. “So the fact that we came sixth in the jury vote is incredible.”

That casual attitude made its way on screen. When Voyager won the second round of Eurovision’s semi-finals, they sprayed people around them with water that they’d put in a champagne bottle. During the final, almost as talked-about as Promise was the fact that, when the band were given top marks by the Portuguese jury, a camera caught them snacking on some ham sandwiches. Cue memes aplenty across social media.

“It was Marks & Spencer’s, so it was a quality sandwich,” Estrin chuckles. “We were told off after the semi-final for the splash incident, so we thought, ‘If we can’t drink, we’re going to eat something.’ These are gruelling nights and days, so there’s nothing like having a little sandwich in your pocket.”

Voyager were far from the first heavy rock band to play Eurovision. Rock’n’roller Freddy Quinn represented the genre (and Germany) at the inaugural Contest in 1956. Then Finnish masked monster mash Lordi and Italian glam bunch Måneskin won the whole thing in 2006 and 2021, respectively. Even this year, Voyager were contending with German gothic metal quintet Lord Of The Lost, who sadly finished in last place.

However, competing in a mainstream programme mostly reserved for pop singers/songwriters has led to purists sometimes denouncing bands as ‘Eurovision groups’, like it’s a derogatory term. Dow claims Voyager haven’t weathered any such pushback, though.

“The feedback we had during the whole process was super-supportive,” the guitarist says. “People were stoked that we were putting progressive metal on the map. Now, we’ve got sold-out shows across Europe and Australia. You could not ask for anything more than that.”

Currently, Voyager are only weeks removed from Eurovision, but they already have a full touring cycle directly ahead of them. Eager to see their litany of new fans in the flesh, Estrin, Dow and Canion are all impatient to get onto the road. “I hope Eurovision will allow us to keep upgrading with each subsequent tour,” the bassist says. “I hope it’ll let us craft the kind of show that I’ve wanted to put on with Voyager since I joined.”

Looking beyond this year, they want to have a legacy as the band that brought both fearlessness and consistent quality to not just Eurovision, but the broader rock and prog scenes. “I want us to go down as a band that doesn’t sound like anyone else, regardless of at what point you pick up a Voyager album and listen to it,” Estrin states.

“We’ve always done things differently, but we’ve always sounded quintessentially Voyager,” Canion adds. “I think that, now we’re eight albums in, that’s never going to change.”

Sunday marks the 40th anniversary of the launch of Voyager 2 which, at the time, confused the heck out of the press and public because it actually launched before Voyager 1. Why did they launch the second probe first? Because Voyager 2 was going to follow a longer trajectory to reach the Jupiter system, allowing it to fly by Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Voyager 1 launched 16 days later on a faster track optimized to fly by Jupiter, Saturn, and make a relatively close pass of Saturn's intriguing moon Titan.

Further Reading

The missions, of course, were smashing successes. Voyager 1 reached Jupiter on March 5, 1979, about four months before its twin. Scientists weren't sure what they would find out there. Pioneer 10 and 11 had given them some insights about Jupiter and Saturn as gas giants, but little information was known about the many moons of these worlds. Most scientists thought they would probably be a lot like the cold, dark, and lifeless moons of Earth and Mars.

They were anything but. When you talk to the scientists involved with the Voyagers and ask when they knew their missions would reveal something entirely different and truly otherworldly, they point toward the discovery of volcanic activity on Jupiter's moon Io. Until then, the only known active volcanoes in the Solar System were on Earth. Here was a small moon with 10 times the volcanic activity.

"That was really the wake-up call that we were in for a journey that was even much more spectacular in terms of what we were going to discover than we could imagine," said Ed Stone, who has been Voyager's chief scientist since the program started in 1972. "There were many. That's really the wonderful thing about Voyager. But if I had to pick one that was symbolic, Io was it."

  • Voyager scientists were astonished to find volcanism on Io. Here, a volcanic plume erupts from Pele 300 kilometers above the surface, in an umbrella-like shape. NASA
  • This is the image in which Linda A. Morabito, a JPL engineer, discovered the first extraterrestrial volcanic eruption (the bright curved volcanic cloud on the limb). NASA
  • Image of Io showing active plume of Loki on limb. The photos that make up this mosaic were taken from an average distance of approximately 490,000 kilometers. NASA
  • Io's volcanic plains are shown in this Voyager 1 image mosaic, which covers an area about 1,300km long. Also visible are numerous volcanic calderas and lava flows. NASA
  • This view shows two of Io's 10 highest peaks, the Euboea Montes, upper left, and Haemus Mons (10,000 meters), at the bottom. NASA
  • Io's north pole. NASA
  • Io's volcanoes continually resurface the moon, so that any impact craters have disappeared. NASA
  • Tiny Io, in front of Jupiter. This gallery highlights the extraordinary volcanism on the moon. NASA

Io really was the beginning of a special journey. Thereafter, the Voyager spacecraft found a deep water ocean on Europa, methane seas on Titan, and likely geysers on Triton. Later, Voyager 1 took an iconic photo of Earth among the other planets in the Solar System. It later left the system entirely into the void of interstellar space.

"Time after time, we discovered things that we hadn't even imagined," Stone told Ars. Indeed. We still marvel today.

VOYAGER GOLDEN RECORD

11 Pieces of Media on the Voyager Golden Record

By michele debczak | apr 11, 2021.

NASA/JPL-Caltech

At this moment, two gold-plated copper records are hurtling through space, speeding beyond our solar system. The Voyager 1 and 2 probes launched in 1977 , and they’ve since traveled billions of miles from Earth. They are currently the loneliest human-made objects in the universe—and they may stay that way forever—but they were built to make a connection.

The purpose of NASA ’s Voyager mission is to illustrate life on Earth to any intelligent aliens that come across the spacecraft. The records on board contain media selected by a committee chaired by scientist Carl Sagan. If extraterrestrials can use the instructions engraved on the disc's cover to access its contents, they’ll be exposed to animal noises, classical music, and photographs of people from around the world. Here are some pieces of media that were chosen to represent our planet.

1. Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony

Ludwig van Beethoven is one of many classical artists representing the music of Earth on the Voyager record. In addition to his Fifth Symphony , the composer’s String Quartet No. 13, Opus 130, is also included on the track list.

2. Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode”

Though there are many musical compositions on the Voyager Golden Record , the inclusion of “Johnny B. Goode” stirred controversy. Critics claimed rock n’ roll was too adolescent for a project of such significance. Carl Sagan responded by saying, “There are a lot of adolescents on the planet.”

3. A Mandarin Greeting and Invitation

The Voyager project recorded UN delegates from around the world saying greetings in 54 different languages. Most are straightforward, but the Mandarin message includes an invitation. Translated to English, it says: "Hope everyone's well. We are thinking about you all. Please come here to visit when you have time."

4. Humpback Whale Songs

The greetings section of the record features one language that doesn’t belong to humans. Interspersed between the spoken audio clips are the sounds of singing humpback whales . There’s a reason whales were included with the greetings rather than the other animal noises on the record—it was the committee’s way of acknowledging that humans aren’t the only intelligent life on Earth.

5. The UN Building

The Voyager committee chose the UN Building to represent modern urban architecture. The record includes two images of the New York City skyscraper, both taken at the same angle. One depicts the structure during the day and the other shows it at night .

6. A Traffic Jam

The Voyager record highlights many technological marvels from the time it was made, including a rocket and an airplane. The photo of a traffic jam in Thailand that was included may seem less impressive, but it accurately depicts how we use cars on our planet.

7. A Bulgarian Folk Song

The Voyager committee wanted the record's music to represent a wide range of eras and cultures. One track, titled "Izlel je Delyo Hagdutin," is a traditional folk song from Bulgaria . Sung by Valya Balkanska, it’s about a famous rebel leader from the country’s history. Folk music from Azerbaijan, Georgia, and the Navajo people also made it onto the compilation.

8. Ann Druyan’s Brainwaves

While working on the Voyager committee, Ann Druyan had the idea to record her brainwaves, turn them into audio, and copy them onto the record. She spent an hour hooked up to electrical impulse-measuring systems while thinking various thoughts, including what it’s like to fall in love. She and Sagan—her collaborator on the Voyager record project—had recently gotten engaged.

9. A Map of the Solar System

The Voyager mission is designed to travel far, but it will always hold evidence of where it came from. One of the images on the record shows a picture of our solar system with a map illustrating Earth’s location.

10. People Eating

Some human behaviors are tricky to capture in one image. To show the different ways people consume food and drink, the Voyager committee included a photo of someone licking ice cream, someone else biting into a sandwich, and a third person pouring water into their mouth.

11. A Morse Code Message

Another type of communication represented on the Voyager record is Morse code . The message translates to the Latin saying ad astra per aspera , or “to the stars through hard work.”

School Library Journal , starred review Forty years after the launch of the twin space probes, Siy’s well-researched and enthusiastic title depicts their conception, construction, major discoveries, and lasting legacy. After two introductory chapters, the narrative settles into a pattern: each chapter opens with a historical breakthrough, such as Galileo discovering four of Jupiter’s moons, and then relates some pertinent information gained from the Voyagers’ data as well as photos from specific encounters. The material is presented in a chronological order that roughly follows Voyager One’s and Voyager Two’s journeys, taking readers from launch on Earth through reaching interstellar space. The final chapter, on the Golden Records, the Voyagers’ message in a bottle from Earth to aliens who may come across it, ends the book on a hopeful note. The back matter, especially the links found in “Keeping Up with the Voyagers,” will be invaluable for those wanting more. Siy’s conversational tone makes for quick reading, and she deftly injects humor into what could have been challenging passages about eight-tracks and other 1970s era technology. Beautiful full-page photographs, most of which are from the Voyager mission, enhance the text. VERDICT An engaging and captivating STEM title that deserves a place in most libraries.
Kirkus Reviews From the author of Cars on Mars: Roving the Red Planet (2011) comes this fascinating story of the twin Voyager probes, launched 40 years ago to travel to the outer planets of our solar system and now continuing into interstellar space. The story begins with two graduate students in the early 1960s. CalTech aeronautics student Gary Flandro, working part-time at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab, is encouraged by his boss to investigate gravity-assist rocket trajectories to the outer planets. Flandro builds upon the idea of unlimited, gravity-propelled interplanetary space travel invented four years earlier by UCLA physics and mathematics student Michael Minovitch. It was Minovitch's idea of using a planet's gravitational filed as a "slingshot" effect to enable a spacecraft to travel from one planet to another that made the Voyager mission feasible. In an accessible narrative written in engaging conversational style, including the remarkable Golden Record that readers will wish for more detail about—and what was discovered in their journeys to Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, and their ventures beyond the solar system. Chapters are divided into subtopics, keeping the narrative manageable, and plentiful full-color photographs and schematics neatly complement the text. A lively, informative, and inspiring story of space exploration.
Booklist In 1965, a graduate student working part-time at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory envisioned "the Grand Tour." Taking advantage of a rare planetary alignment during the 1980s, NASA could slingshot space probes from one planet to another, saving fuel while gathering data and beaming it back to Earth. With the space telescope and space shuttle projects already in progress, funding looked unlikely, but the Voyager mission got the go-ahead, and the rest is space exploration history. Forty years after the launch dates, Siy tells the story of the Voyager 1 and 2 space probes, from their brilliant conception and the idealistic Golden Record through the revolutionary series of planetary discoveries and Voyager 1 's entry into interstellar space. Writing in a conversational style, Siy presents a good deal of information in an accessible way. She creates a sense of discovery as scientists interpret data, and images are sent back by the probes. Most double-page spreads include at least one illustration, usually a NASA image reproduced in color. A timely introduction to the Voyager mission.
The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books It took clever observations and some political wrangling to get the twin spacecraft, Voyager I and II, off the ground in 1977. As some scientists suggested that spacecraft could reduce fuel consumption to near zero by using planets' gravitational fields as acceleration "assists," other scientists noted that a narrow window of opportunity, due to planetary alignment, would open in 1977, giving a space mission a clear path to planet hop right on out of the solar system. Government coffers weren't exactly overflowing for this ambitious project, but a more modest flight was proposed—settle for Jupiter and Saturn, with one craft to do the research and the other as a backup. The concept and execution worked so well that, forty years later, the Grand Tour is still going on, with Voyagers sending data back to Earth from beyond Neptune. Siy is an enthusiastic tour guide, presenting the highlights of planetary fly-bys that changed our understanding of space with every fresh data drop. Each chapter begins with a brief history lesson of what we thought we knew and then moves on to a lively discussion of what we now think we know instead. Siy incorporates mini science lessons as need arises throughout the text, which results in a smooth, sidebar-free reading experience. Plenty of photographs, captioned to denote whether the image is false colored, will attract browsers, while source notes and resource lists will direct report writers to information about their favorite mind-blowing discoveries. Best of all, there's more to come.
Publishers Weekly Siy ( Spidermania: Friends on the Web ) weaves a musical theme into the riveting story of NASA's Voyager mission, which got underway in 1977 with the launch of two probes; originally designed to explore Jupiter and Saturn, they are now proceeding into interstellar space while transmitting data back to Earth. Throughout, Siy introduces scientists who contributed to the launch while bouncing between the probe's paths (and attendant discoveries, such as volcanic activity on Io) and the pivotal work of Galileo and other early astronomers, highlighting the way science builds on past discoveries. In keeping with the musical theme, Siy concludes by discussing the Golden Record, a copper LP with copies riding aboard the Voyager probes, which contains photos, greetings, and music in wait of a potential extraterrestrial listener. It's an engaging and readily accessible account of a remarkable—and ongoing—scientific success story.

Broward woman purposely hit ‘slow’ pedestrian in Target parking lot, police say

‘get out the f---ing way before i hit y’all,’ cops say 34-year-old yelled before hitting woman.

Chris Gothner , Digital Journalist

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – Keyana Monique Pitaluga was all smiles when jailers took her Broward County booking photo, but she’s facing a serious felony charge after Hollywood police said she purposely hit a pedestrian with her SUV in a Target parking lot.

Pitaluga was arrested Friday on a warrant in connection with the February incident. According to arrest documents released Tuesday, Fort Lauderdale police pulled her over for having an expired tag.

Recommended Videos

According to the warrant, the victim told police that as she, her sister and a friend were walking to the entrance of Target at 3251 Hollywood Blvd. on the morning of Feb. 11, a woman in a black SUV, later identified as Pitaluga, “became impatient.”

Police said the 34-year-old, who had a young child in the front seat, was upset that the group was “walking to(o) slow in the roadway and she wanted to pass them.”

The woman’s sister said Pitaluga honked and yelled, “Get out the f---ing way before I hit y’all” at the group and the woman and her sister began to argue with her, the warrant states.

Police said surveillance video shows Pitaluga driving towards the victim from behind, causing her to stumble and drop her purse. The woman was unhurt but said she wished to press charges.

Pitaluga, who lives in the unincorporated Roosevelt Gardens section of central Broward County, was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and later released from jail on a $50,000 bond, online records show.

19-year-old dies after being hit by flying object from explosion, fire in Clinton Township

DETROIT — A 19-year-old died after he was hit with a flying object from fiery explosions at a vape distributor Monday night about a quarter-mile away in a Detroit suburb, authorities said.

Fire officials raced to put out a massive fire as hundreds of explosions boomed in Clinton Township, around 25 miles north of downtown Detroit, at around 9 p.m. Monday. The explosions and fire happened at a business building that housed Select Distributors, according to the Detroit Free Press , part of the USA TODAY Network.

Clinton Township Fire Chief Tim Duncan said the teen was at a nearby carwash near a service station when he was hit in the head by a projectile, possibly a tank, that shot out of the fire amid continuous explosions. The teen may have been observing the fire when he was struck, Duncan said, but officials were still investigating the death.

The teen, who has not been identified, died around 4 a.m. on Tuesday, according to Duncan.

"Our thoughts and prayers and sadness to the family, friends and loved ones in the community of the loss of a life of a 19-year-old out in the street that got hit by one of those pieces of shrapnel," Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel said at a news conference Tuesday morning.

"I couldn't think of anything sadder as an outcome for this particular situation," he said.

The large blaze caused multiple explosions, sending debris and gas canisters into the air. Authorities believe the canisters may have been responsible for the explosions but haven’t yet determined the cause of the fire.

Clinton Township police said area residents and businesses were evacuated. The fire was reportedly under control by 11 p.m. Monday, but the cleanup for the explosions and fire continued through Tuesday morning.

Residents up to 10 miles away in Macomb Township, Michigan, reported hearing loud bangs that persisted for more than an hour. Smoke and flames could be seen for miles.

"You could see the amount of fire just coursing in the sky," Duncan said at a news conference Tuesday. "The explosions were actually shaking the car."

Duncan said the explosions were so intense firefighters couldn't initially approach the building. "We had to back out," he said. "There was no way we could put people in harm's way like that."

"This by far was the biggest one that I've ever seen," said Duncan, who has fought fires for 25 years.

Here's what to know about the fire.

Nashville plane crash: 5 people dead after single-engine plane crashes along interstate

Where were the Clinton Township explosions?

The fire and explosions began in a building that housed  Select Distributors , police said. Duncan said Select Distributors provides gases for vape pens.

The building had also housed a distributor for the vaping industry called Goo which had more than 100,000 vape pens stored on-site, Duncan said.

"They had literally received a truckload of butane within the past week, and they still had over half of that left," Duncan said. "So this is what you're seeing strewn throughout the area."

Duncan said two business owners were interviewed by officials from the local fire department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives on Monday. The investigation is ongoing, under the jurisdiction of both agencies, Duncan added. Clinton Township police are also assisting.

Township officials said Tuesday that butane and nitrous oxide, lighter fluid, vape pens, and canisters measuring 12-18 inches and weighing 10-15 pounds exploded during the blaze at Goo. The business wasn’t permitted to have those materials and Duncan said the last inspection of the site in 2022 “did not show this amount of material.”

Clinton Township Supervisor Robert Cannon said the city would have "issued violations immediately," had officials known containers of butane and nitrous oxide were being kept in the back rooms of the building.

"There are going to be repercussions," he said.

'Exploding canisters raining down all around us'

The debris fell Monday night as far as a mile away, Clinton Township police said on Facebook. Authorities urged people in the area to stay inside after the explosions began.

Duncan said calls started coming in about 8:50 p.m. and four people in the building heard shaking and got out. He said fire crews could feel shaking on the way to the scene.

There were "exploding canisters raining down all around us and subjecting multiple staff members to potential peril," Township Police Capt. Anthony Coppola said.

Cannon said the township's public works is collecting "as much material as they can be to analyzed by the police department at a later date."

County officials had to "scrape the road" to clear debris from the explosions, according to Duncan. He said officials were trying to recover blades and knives thrown by the explosion.

The Detroit Free Press reported at least one person discovered an open knife in the debris.

Were there any injuries?

Duncan said a firefighter was briefly hospitalized after he was hit with broken glass and shrapnel from the explosion. Cannon said the firefighter was injured when an object went through the windshield of the fire truck.

Both a police and a fire vehicle were damaged by exploding projectile canisters.

Social media captures fire, expulsions

Did the fire affect the air quality in clinton township.

Duncan said a hazmat team that arrived to test the air quality Monday evening concluded the area was safe.

"They monitored the situation, they had all their equipment set up," Duncan said. "Everything came back fine. They weren't concerned."

Hackel said Monday preliminary findings from air quality tests determined there was smoke, but nothing hazardous.

Testing was mostly west of Groesbeck, as the wind was pushing smoke westerly and semi-northerly, he said.

Hackel said people with smoke allergies or issues breathing may want to find shelter or a different location to stay if they are bothered by smoke while inside their homes in the immediate area.

He said the county's emergency management assisted with air quality testing and remained on the scene. He said dust or particles on the ground will be tested if need be.

The disaster knocked out power throughout the area, Duncan said. Technicians for DTE Energy were working to restore power as of Tuesday, he said.

James van Riemsdyk reaches 1,000 NHL games played in first season with the Bruins

And the grand celebrations continue on.

James van Riemsdyk played in his 1,000th game Tuesday night, becoming the second Bruin this season (along with captain Brad Marchand ) to reach the career milestone.

“Feels a little surreal to be honest,” said van Riemsdyk said before the Bruins lost, 2-1, to the Oilers in overtime at TD Garden. “You don’t really realize the significance of it until you get in the league. … Moments like this are kind of cool to share with your support system that help you make it to over a long time.

“Obviously, there are a lot of ups and downs, and you feel lucky to get the support you have from your family, friends, and the people closest to you.”

The 34-year-old van Riemsdyk is the 10th NHLer this season to hit 1,000 games, joining Marchand, Ryan O’Reilly (Predators), Kyle Okposo (Sabres), Cal Clutterbuck (Islanders), Victor Hedman (Lightning), Matt Duchene (Stars), Marc-Andre Fleury (Wild), Lars Eller (Penguins), and Alex Pietrangelo (Golden Knights).

The Bruins will formally honor van Riemsdyk for the accomplishment March 16 before a game against the Flyers, the franchise that drafted him second overall in 2007 . He spent his first three seasons in Philadelphia, then returned for a five-year run sandwiched around six seasons in Toronto.

“A lot of history there. Came into the league with them, got drafted by them, spent a lot of years, a lot of games there,” van Riemsdyk said. “Was there through two different, very different phases of my life when I was very young and then older and then having a family and things like that. So yeah, that’s definitely something that’ll make it even a little bit more special.”

A former standout at the University of New Hampshire, van Riemsdyk returned to New England in July when he signed a one-year, $1 million free agent deal with the Bruins .

The winger entered Tuesday’s game with 311 goals and 629 points for his career, including 11 goals and 38 points in 59 games this season.

Van Riemsdyk has played up and down the lineup for Bruins coach Jim Montgomery and has seen significant time on the power play, scoring 6 goals and 12 points on the man advantage.

“Incredibly bright person and bright player,” said Montgomery when asked what he’s seen from van Riemsdyk this season. “He understands the game at a high level and has done a lot to help build our offensive game especially.”

Trade rumor front and center

The Bruins could be in the running for center Elias Lindholm , who was traded from the Flames to the Canucks just before the All-Star Game., according to a report from The Athletic.

The report said Vancouver is looking to land Pittsburgh’s Jake Guentzel in the next 24 hours and would try to flip Lindholm to Boston to facilitate the deal. The Canucks recently signed their top center, Elias Pettersson , to an eight-year, $92.8 million deal.

Lindholm, 29, has 4 goals and 6 points in 14 games with the Canucks. He is in the final year of a deal that pays him $4.85 million, so the Bruins would need to move a player to make the money work on their end.

Lindholm closes in on return

Defenseman Hampus Lindholm is moving closer to a return to action after suffering a knee injury in the Presidents Day matinee win over the Stars.

“Hampus is doing really well,” Montgomery said. “I don’t have an official game time when he’ll be back, but it’s getting close.”

Pasta dishes served hot in Toronto

David Pastrnak dished out three assists in Monday’s win in Toronto , as he continues to be among the biggest thorns in the Maple Leafs’ side.

In 27 career games against Toronto, Pastrnak has 18 goals and 35 points, a 1.30 points per game average. Only Phil Esposito (1.49) and Jean Ratelle (1.47) had better averages against the Maple Leafs.

Pastrnak also hit the 90-point plateau for the season (38 goals, 52 assists), becoming the eighth Bruin to hit that mark in consecutive campaigns, joining some elite Black and Gold company: Esposito (seven times); Bobby Orr (six); Rick Middleton (five), Barry Pederson (three), and Adam Oates , Cam Neely , and Ratelle (two each).

Heads-up display

Van Riemsdyk went helmetless for warmups for the first time this season, while Pastrnak, in perhaps a tip of the cap to JVR, switched it up and donned a helmet during the pregame for the first time this season … The Bruins’ defensive corps remained the same from Monday, with Derek Forbort taking a seat for the second straight game … Scouts from the Rangers and Lightning were in attendance … Sign of the night (in all red caps): “FREDERIC.” Sometimes simple is better … Song of the night: “Zoo Station,” by U2.

James van Riemsdyk reached the 1,000-game milestone in his 60th with the Bruins.
