Paul McCartney Announces 2013 World Tour

Paul McCartney announced the first two dates of what is expected to be a significant touring schedule in 2013. The singer revealed plans for the Out There World Tour on his website this morning (March 20). His goal is to play cities and venues he and his band have never been.

Response to the news was immediate. Within hours of the news, parties in Argentina were staged with revelers holding "Get Back to Argentina Paul" signs and flying blue and white balloons. Tickets for two stops -- a June 22 show in Warsaw, Pol. and a June 27 date in Vienna, Aus. -- go on sale this Friday (March 22). It will mark McCartney's first show in Poland, and fourth trip to Vienna. More dates are to be announced in the coming weeks.

According to a statement at his website, McCartney will play songs from his entire career, including his solo material, songs from the Beatles and hits as a member of Wings. 2013 could also mean new music for the legend. He's reported to be working on a new studio album, the follow-up to 'Kisses on the Bottom' from 2012.

Paul McCartney Returns to New York on All-New 2013 "Out There" Tour

BROOKLYN (April 18, 2013) -- Paul McCartney has confirmed that his all-new 2013 "Out There" tour will include two shows at Barclays Center in Brooklyn on June 8 and 10. The first-time engagement for Paul at the venue is his first New York appearance since last year's historic 12-12-12 benefit and continues a tradition of legendary NYC area McCartney concerts including 2011's Yankee Stadium doubleheader, 2009's inaugural Citi Field three-play, and stretching all the way back to The Beatles' 1965 musical christening of Shea Stadium. As previously announced, the tour will also be making stops May 18 and 19 in Orlando, FL at Amway Center, May 22 and 23 in Austin, TX at the Frank Erwin Center, May 26 in Memphis, TN at FedEx Forum, May 29 and 30 in Tulsa OK at the BOK Center, July 9 in Boston, MA at Fenway Park, July 12 in Washington DC at Nationals Ballpark, July 14 in Indianapolis IN at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, July 16 in Milwaukee WI at Miller Park and July 19 in Seattle, WA at Safeco Field. Tickets to the newly announced shows will be on sale beginning Monday, April 22 at 10 a.m. local time at Ticketmaster.com . American Express® Cardmembers can purchase tickets before the general public beginning Friday, April 19 at 10 a.m. and concluding Sunday, April 21 at 10 p.m. All times are local. Paul McCartney's "Out There" tour will feature brand new, never before seen production and, as ever, hours of material from the most beloved catalog in popular music, with Paul performing songs spanning his entire career--as a solo artist, member of Wings, and, of course, The Beatles. The McCartney live experience is a once in a lifetime opportunity. For approximately three hours, many of the greatest moments of the last 50 years of musical history--not to mention the soundtracks of entire lives--are magically brought to life as only Paul can do. Last year marked 40 years since Paul's premiere tour as a solo artist and these past four decades have seen him play in a staggeringly impressive range of venues and locations, including outside the Coliseum in Rome, in Moscow's Red Square, at the White House, a free show in Mexico to over 400,000 people and even a performance beamed into outer space! Having played with his peerless band of Paul 'Wix' Wickens (keyboards), Rusty Anderson (guitar), Abe Laboriel Jr. (drums) and Brian Ray (bass/guitar) for over ten years, Paul never disappoints--as reviews of his last two-night stand in NYC--2011's Yankee Stadium shows--will attest: "Mr. McCartney is not saying goodbye but touring stadiums and playing marathon concerts. Friday's set ran two-and-a-half hours, with Mr. McCartney constantly onstage, and it had 35 songs, not counting a few additional excerpts. His concerts now are a gentle reminder of his survival and vitality... He perseveres, and entertains, by directly reconnecting to his songs across the decades and still having fun."--THE NEW YORK TIMES

"McCartney's continued ability to perform such key material so gracefully makes his shows more than just worthy entertainment. They're a kind of public service."--THE NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

"The 2½-hour, 35-song set featured five decades worth of hits without a dud in the batch"--THE NEW YORK POST

"Paul McCartney is many things, a gifted musician, singer and band leader. Mostly, he is an inspiration. Last night at Yankee Stadium, McCartney played and played, gave and gave, for well over two hours. He never stopped singing, playing, performing and smiling. He loves pleasing crowds."--THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

"Dude is almost twice my age, and that f***er can belt, and in the physical-grace department, my blind guess of his age might have been more like a very agile 50. I could barely stand in front of my center field seat, which proved necessary pretty much the entire time... Changed my life"--THE VILLAGE VOICE

Paul is throwing himself into 2013 with full force following yet another landmark year in 2012, which saw him conclude his record-breaking "On The Run" tour, release his Grammy-winning Kisses On The Bottom album, accept a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, play at both the Diamond Jubilee and Olympics Opening Ceremony, be named MusiCares Person of the Year, and headline 12-12-12 The Concert For Sandy Relief--to highlight just a few memorable moments. With the "Out There'" tour and a new studio album in the works, it looks like 2013 will show no signs of Paul slowing down. The "Out There" tour will see Paul and his band travel the world throughout the year, visiting both places of historical significance to Paul and new spots for the very first time. Further announcements and dates will be added in the coming weeks. Stay tuned to www.paulmccartney.com for official news and updates.

From paulmccartney.com , April 8, 2013:

Paul will play the Amway Center in Orlando, FL on May 18, and the FedEx Forum in Memphis TN on May 26, returning to both cities for the first time since his “New World Tour” in 1993.

From News from The Associated Press (archive.org) , May 27, 2013:

Paul McCartney made his first visit to the one-time home of the King of Rock `N’ Roll and left a gift behind. According to the official Twitter account of the former Beatle, McCartney dropped a personal guitar pick on Elvis Presley’s grave and said it was “so Elvis can play in heaven.” The lifelong Elvis fan toured Graceland, the Memphis mansion, on Sunday. He was in Memphis to play a show on the North American leg of his “Out There” tour. The show at FedExForum marked McCartney’s first visit to the city in two decades.

Paul McCartney also tweeted a photo of himself inside Graceland, holding one of Presley’s personalized guitars.

From Meet the Beatles for Real: A Beatle fanatic at a Paul McCartney Soundcheck for the first time :

[…] Finally Paul got to the microphone and welcomed us to the soundcheck.   To look at us, he had to put his hand up above his eyes.   Why were we sitting so far from him….I kept wondering.   He called us the “soundcheckers.”    He explained how he was going to run through a few songs with the band.   He talked a bit about Memphis and Carl Perkins and started by singing “Matchbox.”    Of course I associate that song with Ringo and it was pretty neat hearing Paul perform it.    The he moved onto “Blue Suede Shoes” and everyone started dancing.   The soundcheck was sort of a blur in a way.   I was trying my best to take it all in, but it was hard to really do.    At one point he noticed a girl who had a sign about how it was her birthday and then they played “Birthday.”    I held up the “soundcheck” sign I made that said “1K PPL WANT ME 2 MEET U 4 REAL.”   I think he saw it, but I don’t think he understood what it meant.   He did thank everyone for making signs.   He played some on the piano and it was really nice.   Then he got out his ukulele and played “Ram on,” which was fun to hear.   And next he played, “Big Barn Bed.”    The  Wings album, Red Rose Speedway has always been one of my favorites and I had actually been listening to it in the car the past week, so hearing this song was awesome!  It was sounded amazing on the uke!     It wasn’t until long after the soundcheck that I learned that Paul has NEVER performed that song live before.   I hadn’t looked at the soundcheck set list on purpose, so I didn’t know that he hadn’t been playing that one all along.   After playing “Things we Said today,” he then played one of my top favorite McCartney solo songs:  Bluebird.   Oh I was in heaven!!!     The “magic” piano was rolled out and Paul played my mom’s favorite Beatles song, “Lady Madonna.”  And that was it!   The soundcheck was over.   Paul thanked us for coming and told us to enjoy the show.    He played many songs, but I just can’t remember them all.   Paul looked really good.  He was wearing a blue suit jacket that looked similar to the one from the Abbey Road cover.    To me he looked a bit younger in person than he has looked in recent photographs.   All during the soundcheck he was drinking something that sort of looked like Gatorade.    I am not sure what it was, but he was chugging that stuff.   It is interesting because he never takes a drink at all during the concerts I have been to.  […] (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

From Icon’s Return | Music Features | Memphis News and Events | Memphis Flyer , May 30, 2013:

A full 20 years after last performing for a Memphis audience at the Liberty Bowl, Paul McCartney returned Sunday night, this time to FedExForum for his 2013 “Out There” tour. And, though the show was dominated by classics from several different periods of the 50-odd years this remarkable artist/icon has been performing, there was no oldies-show aura to any of it. During the three hours he was onstage, McCartney must have played at least a score of different instruments — including two pianos, a ukulele, and innumerable guitars, both acoustic and electric, on one of which, during an instrumental spell, he convincingly reprised some blues riffs from Jimi Hendrix’s “Foxy Lady.” The ukulele was used to begin a version of George Harrison’s “Something,” which former comrade McCartney finished with a full orchestral swirl à la Phil Spector. McCartney also paid homage to other mates, including members of the Beatles, Wings, and others of his musical aggregates in the photo-montages that played intermittently on a screen behind him. Notably, McCartney performed his 1982 song “Here Today,” written for martyred colleague John Lennon, and did a version of Lennon’s “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite,” a novelty number from Sgt. Pepper’s that was getting its regional concert debut — “first time in Tennessee, baby,” Sir Paul said. That was one of several references, direct and indirect, to his audience, the most notable of which was McCartney’s recollection of the importance that music coming out of Memphis had for the “kids” who would later kick off the British Invasion and his assertion that “I don’t think we could have done it without Memphis.” […]
