The 13 best rock band trios ever.

Pioneers in the field of the ambitious concept album and masters of progressive rock, not to mention their facility with space jams and symphonic structures, Camel have been a fixture on the scene since the young group formed in the early 1970s. Still thrilling their fans today – they’ve been touring their classic The Snow Goose and playing it in its entirety – Camel is one of those names that everyone knows but may not yet have discovered.

Camels are popular with many of the tourists visiting Qatar for the World Cup

Because of the camels popularity, tour guides are making a lot of money — but the animals are working overtime.

A MARTÍNEZ, HOST:

Camels are an important part of the history and culture of the Middle East. They're also very popular with many of the 1 million tourists visiting Qatar for the World Cup.

STEVE INSKEEP, HOST:

Which is great for camel tour guides, who are making some money, but the animals are working overtime.

(SOUNDBITE OF CAMEL VOCALIZING)

MARTÍNEZ: One camel tour guide told the Associated Press he normally gives about 20 rides a day, 50 on the weekends. With the World Cup, he's now giving 500 each morning, 500 more in the afternoons. They've had to get a lot more camels to meet demand.

RICHARD BULLIET: I don't think that that is a terribly heavy burden for a camel.

INSKEEP: Richard Bulliet is a professor emeritus specializing in Middle Eastern history at Columbia University. He literally wrote the book on the history of camels. Bulliet says that based on what he knows, he's not that concerned about the camels working extra shifts.

BULLIET: Camels are enormously durable animals. There was a famous horse race, camel race where a horse raced a camel for 150 miles, something like that. And the horse won the race. Then the horse was utterly exhausted. And the next day, the camel walked back the 150 miles to the place where it started.

MARTÍNEZ: In the sixth century, camels were the world's primary form of land transportation. Thanks to the hump on their back packed with fat, they can go a week without water and months without food.

BULLIET: It makes an almost energy-free form of transport.

INSKEEP: In modern-day Qatar, camels are valued for racing. They can run as quickly as 40 miles per hour for short stretches and 30 miles per hour on long distances. They probably get good mileage, too.

(SOUNDBITE OF CAMELS GALLOPING)

MARTÍNEZ: But tourists hoping to cross a camel ride off their bucket list should try their best to stay on the animal's good side.

BULLIET: Camels do spit. If they're annoyed, they can also kick out to the side. They don't really care much about people.

MARTÍNEZ: So on this hump day, hopefully the burden on your back is a little lighter than theirs.

The Pushkar fair is also a holy pilgrimage for Hindus , held for 5 days every year from Kartik Ekadashi to Kartik purnima. Pilgrims that visit Pushkar come to take a holy dip in the Pushkar Lake and offer prayer to the deity residing in the temple at Pushkar, Lord Brahma. This is the only temple of the deity in the country, which makes it an important pilgrimage spot for people of faith. The two full moon days are regarded as highly auspicious that calls for special rituals and prayers to the deity.

The main attractions at the fair, needless to say are the camels. They are dressed and decorated with colorful saddles, jewelry and other embellishments and exhibited for the trade, there are other unique practices surrounding the camels exhibited at the fair that help to promote the virility of each animal, like – shaving camels, camel races, beauty pageants, camel parades, camel dance and the enthralling auctioning of these magnificent animals that form an integral part of Rajasthan’s livelihood in the desert.

New York Today

The last days of 6 townhouses that have stood for 125 years.

The houses on West 158th Street are likely to be destroyed for a new apartment building.

James Barron

By James Barron

Good morning. It’s Thursday. Today we’ll find out about residents who have not given up their opposition to an apartment building planned for their Upper Manhattan neighborhood. We’ll also take a closer look at something that’s everywhere in New York City: scaffolding.

A row of townhouses and a street with a yellow dividing line, seen from above.

Richard W.B. Feigen acknowledged that it was almost too late. “This might not be the 11th hour,” he said. “It’s like 11:59.”

Feigen is a longtime opponent of change on his block, on West 158th Street in Upper Manhattan — change that has taken the form of a 140-unit apartment building. The developer planning it intends to demolish six townhouses, starting with the one next to Feigen’s — part of a row that has stood together since around the time that Theodore Roosevelt and the Rough Riders set their sights on San Juan Hill during the Spanish-American War.

Now the city’s past and its present are colliding on the block. The developer, Artifact Real Estate Development , said in a statement that the project was important for “a city that’s hungry for affordable living space and community space.” Its plans call for 140 apartments, 42 of them classified as affordable.

It’s not a historic block, according to the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission — a fact that upsets Feigen and other opponents of the apartment project.

The houses on West 158th Street were left out of a historic district that was designated in 2009. A spokeswoman for the commission said in 2017 that the decision not to include them was deliberate, because they are of “a different typology” than the five- to 13-story brick apartment buildings that dominate the area. The landmarks commission has rejected subsequent appeals to reconsider.

The Department of Buildings said on Wednesday that demolition permits had been issued for only three of the townhouses; permits for the other three have been applied for. The front windows have already been removed from one of the houses, and the back windows have been taken out of another.

Residents in the neighborhood had worried for years that the block was vulnerable. In 2017, two houses, Nos. 636 and 640, were listed as being in contract for $2.35 million each. Residents said that No. 638 later went for nearly three times that amount. It was more valuable, they said, because it came with a lot behind the other houses that would give a new building a much larger footprint.

“We get it: No one likes major construction in their backyard,” Javier Martinez, the chief executive officer of Artifact, said in a statement. “But that’s not sufficient reason to hold up or cancel the construction of an important mixed-use building that’s bringing a lot of much-needed housing into the community.”

Martinez also said some of the houses “were doing harm to the community.” At least two were vacant “and in horrible condition,” he said. “Both had ongoing issues with squatters, trespassers doing drugs inside and terrible rat infestation.”

Feigen said that the house next to his had been vacant a couple of years ago and that a drug dealer had used it. “This was his distribution hub,” Feigen said, adding that at one point, he had to hire a security guard to see that his house remained safe.

Vivian Ducat, another opponent of the new building and a member of the land use committee of Community Board 12, said the board had passed several resolutions over the years calling for the townhouses to be added to the nearby Audubon Park Historic District.

Feigen once dreamed of a community garden behind the townhouses. He said there was a red oak tree behind one of them that the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx “would be proud to have.”

Some of the opponents are scheduled to meet today with Mark Levine, the Manhattan borough president, and a City Council member, Shaun Abreu, even though the possibility of saving the townhouses seems slim. Levine said on Wednesday that he would “miss these lovely buildings.”

“Even in the midst of a housing shortage,” he said, “there are some buildings worth preserving. Perhaps there is a way to retain the essential components of these historic structures while adding housing on the site?”

Enjoy a sunny day in the mid-50s. The evening will be clear, with temperatures dropping to the high 30s.

Enough scaffolding to reach to Montreal

Politicians and celebrities come and go in New York City. But as my colleague Patrick McGeehan writes, scaffolding never fades away . The 8,500-plus sidewalk sheds on the city’s streets would reach from Manhattan to Montreal if they were laid end to end.

They are meant to be temporary, erected to shield pedestrians from falling debris while buildings are being constructed, inspected or repaired. But nearly 1,000 of the sheds have been in place for more than three years, city records show. One shed on the Grand Concourse in the Bronx and another in the Wingate section of Brooklyn have stood since 2011.

At many sites, no work is being done. The property owners — who put the sheds up to comply with local laws that some consider draconian — found that keeping them in place was less expensive than doing facade repairs.

Neal Shoemaker’s storefront tour business in Harlem is sandwiched between two sheds, one of which has existed, on and off, for more than two decades. “There are not many people around who remember when it wasn’t there,” he said.

Over the years, city officials have railed against the proliferation of sheds, saying they obscure businesses and foster illegal activity. But their desire for change has been constrained by regulations spurred by the death of a Barnard College freshman in 1979. Laws enacted in the wake of that tragedy mandated periodic inspection of the facades of buildings taller than six stories.

Conducting those inspections requires that scaffolding be put up, which gave rise to an industry made up of private inspectors and companies that provide and maintain the structures that loom overhead. In 2022, Bloomberg estimated that construction scaffolding was a $1 billion business in New York City.

METROPOLITAN diary

Frogtown dream

Dear Diary:

There’s a crack on the sidewalk On Broadway between 55th and 56th That I pass on the way to the train That looks exactly like Frogtown, The little enclave of land between the 5 and the L.A. River, Double-humped like a camel, Where I like to walk with Dad.

It’s no more than a few feet long But I can see it on Broadway and pretend it’s the River Walk And the sidewalk is my hometown And 55th is the Pacific And 56th is the San Gabriels And I’m there walking with Dad And the world doesn’t seem too big.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Announces 2024 Inductees: Cher, Jimmy Buffett, Mary J. Blige, Dave Matthews, Peter Frampton, Foreigner and More

Cher, Jimmy Buffett, Mary J. Blige

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has revealed the names of 16 artists or other musical figures who will be inducted in 2024. It’s a diverse list that stretches from R&B/rock pioneer Big Mama Thornton to pop superstars Cher and Dionne Warwick, and from ’70s-rooted rockers like Peter Frampton, Foreigner and Ozzy Osbourne to ’90s icons the Dave Matthews Band , Mary J. Blige and A Tribe Called Quest.

Popular on Variety

For the first time, the inductees were announced as part of an “American Idol” broadcast, during a Sunday night episode themed around the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Following is the complete list of inductees for 2024:

Performer Category:

  • Mary J. Blige
  • Dave Matthews Band
  • Peter Frampton
  • Kool & The Gang
  • Ozzy Osbourne
  • A Tribe Called Quest

Musical Influence Award:

  • Alexis Korner
  • John Mayall
  • Big Mama Thornton

Musical Excellence Award:

  • Jimmy Buffett
  • Dionne Warwick
  • Norman Whitfield

Ahmet Ertegun Award :

  • Suzanne de Passe

The eight “performer” inductees are the ones selected by a ballot sent out to the Hall’s voters after the 15 nominees were announced on Feb. 10.

That leaves seven nominees from this year who will have to wait for another crack at getting in: Mariah Carey, Jane’s Addiction, Sade, Sinead O’Connor, Oasis, Lenny Kravitz and the duo Eric B. and Rakim.

One question mark now is how Cher will react to her induction. Just last December, in an appearance on “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” she said, “You know what, I wouldn’t be in it now if they gave me a million dollars … I’m never going to change my mind. They can just go you-know-what themselves.” At that point, though, she had never received so much as a nomination, so the odds favor her changing her tune on that vow, now that she got voted in her first time actually appearing on the ballot.

Five out of the eight voted in this year were first-time nominees: Osbourne, Cher, Frampton, Foreigner and Kool & the Gang.

A Tribe Called Quest got in on the hip-hop collective’s third time on the ballot (and their third year in a row being nominated). Blige and Matthews both got in on their second try (she was previously up for it in 2021; DMB had a prior nod in 2020).

Frampton, for his part, beyond the merits of having had one of the biggest albums of all time, may be a sentimental favorite this year, due to his being in the acknowledged twilight of his musical career. He has been out on a farewell tour off and on since 2019, following his diagnosis with the debilitating disease inclusion body myositis in 2015. The rocker just wrapped up the last round of dates he had scheduled, although he has not said there won’t be more.

Osbourne becomes a second-time inductee this year; his group Black Sabbath was voted in all the way back in 2006. Sometimes there is contention over whether singers who are already in the Hall of Fame, as group members, really need to be pushed to the front of the line as solo artists, too, ahead of other contenders. In any case, voters decided that Osbourne’s post-Sabbath career established him as one of rock’s major icons, even apart from his initial round of influence and success as a frontman.

De Passe is getting her flowers for a career that included a long stint as one of the major players at Motown, developing the Jackson 5 into superstars and signing the Commodores, among other triumphs, before becoming a film and TV executive. She was profiled by Variety about her long and wide-ranging career in 2022.

Motown is also being celebrated with the induction of Whitfield, a songwriter and producer whose astonishing catalog of hits in the ’60s and ’70s included “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” “Just My Imagination,” “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone,” “War,” “Ball of Confusion,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “(I Know) I’m Losing You,” “I Wish It Would Rain,” “I Can’t Get Next to You” and “Car Wash.” He died in 2008.

Coming on under the “musical influences” umbrella, Alexis Korner may be the name among this year’s inductees that is least known to contemporary music fans. He was a major player in the British blues scene of the 1960s and became a popular broadcaster as well; he died in 1984 at age 55. With John Mayall also being selected by the committee for the same honor, it’s an unexpected banner year for British blues-rockers.
