The Real PGA Tour Money List for 2023: Rahm, Hovland, McIlroy & More

pga tour money list all players

Scottie Scheffler topped the traditional money list, but that was before $75 million in FedEx Cup payouts — find out who’s truly No. 1 in 2022-23.

Entering the 2023 Tour Championship — the finale of the FedEx Cup Playoffs and by extension this year’s PGA Tour campaign — Scottie Scheffler was on the doorstep of golf history. Already the Tour’s record-holder for single-season tournament winnings at just over $21 million, he had a chance to score some serious style points and nearly double his financial haul.

Due to FedEx Cup regulations, his status as playoff points leader meant that he even got to start out the Tour Championship at Atlanta’s East Lake Golf Club at -10, two strokes ahead of the No. 2 competitor on the leaderboard.

When the dust had settled on Aug. 27, however, Scheffler finished just sixth, though he nonetheless earned a $2 million FedEx Cup payout that wasn’t so far off from the handsome $2.7 million he received for winning The Masters in 2022.

Viktor Hovland, meanwhile? The No. 3 money winner from the regular PGA Tour season increased his annual on-course earnings by an incredible 127% in outlasting the Tour Championship field and claiming the FedEx Cup’s eye-popping $18 million top prize.

That’s a lot to process, to say the least. So, what does the “real” year-end PGA Tour money list look like when a full $75 million in playoff bonuses gets factored in?

We went ahead and crunched the numbers for you — check out Boardroom’s full 2022-23 PGA Tour earnings rundown that combines the traditional money list with the final FedEx Cup payout numbers.

Get on our list for weekly sports business, industry trends, interviews, and more.

NOTE: Additional bonus money will be handed out to top players later this year when the PGA Tour announces the top finishers for its Player Impact Program, which seeks to rank the most popular golfers on the Tour regardless of tournament performance.

Do PGA Tour Players Earn A Salary?

JT Poston

The top golfers on the PGA Tour are amongst the highest paid athletes on the planet. On top of their tournament winnings, the biggest stars have lucrative sponsorship deals with golf manufacturers, automotive companies, banks, insurance firms, any corporation that wants to see their name on a hat on prime-time PGA Tour coverage.

In 2022, Scottie Scheffler topped the official PGA Tour money list, winning just over $14 million. Cameron Young in 10th place on the standings won $6.5 million. 126 players on the 2021/22 wrap-around PGA Tour circuit earned over $1 million in prize money. The Tour average was $1.6 million in winnings. 194 players won more than $250,000 and 218 players pocketed more than $100,000.

That might sound like a decent return, but if you take travel, accommodation and general living expenses into the equation, players making $100,000 in winnings alone might struggle to break even.

For the 2022/23 season, all exempt players on the PGA Tour are guaranteed $500,000 against earnings. But it’s not a salary. It’s a base level. Exempt PGA Tour players will receive $500,000 (rookies can claim it up front) and they only start to collect prize money when they earn more than that $500,000 base.

The key is though, if they don’t reach that $500,000 threshold, they don’t have to give the money back. So, PGA Tour players are guaranteed a base income of $500,000 per season.

Lower ranked players, for the first time this season, receive $5,000 in expenses when they miss a cut.

For this season, increased prize funds and “elevated events” mean even more money is on offer for PGA Tour players. There are 12 elevated events carrying a purse of $20 million and the Players Championship has a prize fund of $25 million. At time of writing Jon Rahm is leading the money list for 2022/23. He’s won almost $5 million from just four events.

Player Impact Program

Tiger Woods

Tiger is always tough to beat on the Player Impact Program

The most influential players on the PGA Tour have a further financial incentive in the shape of the Player Impact Program (PIP). This year, the top 20 players who resonate most with fans and media, will share a pot of $100 million.

And then there’s PGA Tour pensions. They’re pretty much the best in sport and hundreds of ex PGA Tour players have multi-million-dollar pension pots to draw on.

How Do Earnings compare to LPGA Tour?

Lydia Ko

In terms of winnings, the prizes are still lower on the LPGA Tour. Lydia Ko headed the 2022 LPGA Tour money list with winnings of $4.4 million, almost $10 million less than Scottie Scheffler . Only 27 players won over $1 million through the season, some 100 fewer than on the PGA Tour.

Although prize money for women’s golf has increased in recent seasons, the gender pay gap remains one of the biggest in sport.

To answer the main question then, do PGA Tour players earn a salary? No, not exactly. But with the $500,000 guarantee for exempt players (before even considering sponsorship deals), they do pretty well for themselves.

Crunching the Numbers

The 5 most eye-opening takeaways from the final 2022-23 PGA Tour money list

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FLORIDA - MARCH 12: Scottie Scheffler of the United States celebrates after making his putt to win on the 18th green during the final round of THE PLAYERS Championship on THE PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass on March 12, 2023 in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. (Photo by Sam Greenwood/Getty Images)

It was once the standard that largely determined whether PGA Tour pros kept or lost their playing privileges for the following year. These days, however, the end-of-the-season money list exists so far in the shadow of the FedEx Cup, you’re hard pressed to find it on the tour’s website. But found it we did—you can see the final tally here —as the 2022-23 edition became official upon the conclusion of last week’s BMW Championship (the $75 million on the line at the Tour Championship is technically not prize money but rather FedEx Cup bonus dollars).

A look at the numbers motivated us to take the extra step of compiling data for the past 10 years, along with snapshots from 2003, 1993 and 1983. Comparing all the crazy cash provides a fascinating picture of how things have changed over the years—and really changed the last few seasons. Here are a few things that caught our eye.

Holy hell, Scottie Scheffler just won a lot of money

Scheffler, who never finished outside the top 11 in a single tournament before the Open Championship, was insanely good this year, and his outrageous skill earned him a figure that is almost garish: $21 million and change to top this year’s list. For context, prior to 2022, just one player had ever earned more than $10 million in a single season, and that was Jordan Spieth in his wonder year of 2015. Then in 2021-22, Scheffler broke every record by earning $14 million. Now he has lapped himself, and if he can pull out the FedEx Cup title this week, he'll claim another $18 million.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2023/8/pga-tour-yearly-money-leader-chart-top-earner-v3.jpg

Mind you, this is about more than just success; the total money available to players this season on the PGA Tour exceeded $500 million for the first time, an increase of about $140 million last year alone. Scheffler was one of seven tour pros to earn eight figures this season (Jon Rahm was second on this year's money list with $16 million in earnings). So Scheffler's haul is a combination of great play and a rising tide.

That rising tide is raising most ships

Among the top 125 on the PGA Tour money list in 2023, the average earnings were $3.79 million, an increase of almost a million dollars from 2022's $2.84 million. If you look at specific positions on the money list, too, Si Woo Kim's 30th-place haul of $5.38 million is a jump of $2.5 million from K.H. Lee's 30th-place money in 2022; Sam Ryder in 70th ($2.36 million) beat Matt Jones' 70th total ($1.91 million); and you have to go down to 125th before you find that Nico Echavarria's $951,000 just fell short of Charles Howell III's figure of $1.03 million last year. In all, the only thing that stayed relatively steady was the number of players making at least a million dollars. After a big jump in 2021 from 112 to 124 (not counting the shortened COVID year of 2020), it went up to 126 last year, and back to 124 in 2023.

The rich are definitely getting richer

To the tour's credit, the emphasis on designated events and increasing top prizes didn't materially affect the earnings of the players lower on the list, although it's also a fact that the lion's share of the gains went to the top players. To some extent, that's again because of great results; Scheffler making 172 percent more than 2021 top finisher Jon Rahm isn't just about higher purses. But incrementally the higher positions on the money list saw bigger gains, at No. 30, Si Woo Kim saw a 60-percent increase; Ryder saw a 21-percent increase at No. 70, and once you got down to No. 125, there was actually a decrease in earnings. Even when you look at 2013, the amount made by the 125th player, Kevin Chappell, wasn't that far behind today's 125 at $647,000. One of the main points of the changes implemented this year was to funnel dollars to the best players, in a model that's more representative of their worth to the tour, and that very much came to pass.

1491557791

Warren Little

The prize increases at the top are outpacing inflation by a whole lot

In 1983, Hal Sutton was the top earner on tour, taking home $426,000. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics , that would be about $1.38 million today … a sizable increase, but nowhere near the reality of Scheffler's $21 million haul. You don't have to look at a 40-year gap, either; Tiger Woods' total of $8.5 million in 2013 would be worth about $11 million today. Again, not very close. It's happening at the bottom, too; the tour average for players in the top 125 of $116,000 in 1983 would only be worth $360,000 today, not the $3.8 million tour pros averaged in 2022-23. Golf has become a far richer sport for its top athletes.

This is almost definitely the new normal

This is just simple math; a big part of the changes this year were a result of the tour trying to compete with LIV Golf. If for whatever reason the merger doesn't go through, they're still going to have to compete with LIV Golf, and if it does go through, they'll have the assets of the PIF at their disposal. There's no scenario barring some kind of economic depression in which this very expensive toothpaste goes back in the tube. If anything, you'd expect it to go up.

In 1978, the first Legends of Golf was held at Onion Creek Country Club in Austin, Texas.

Two years later, the Senior PGA Tour had its first two official tournaments. Don January and Arnold Palmer won those first events.

From there, the circuit grew and in 1990, Lee Trevino became the first golfer to win $1 million in a season. In 2002, the tour was rebranded as the Champions Tour. In 2015, it took on its current name, the PGA Tour Champions.

Bernhard Langer became the winningest golfer in Champions history in 2023 when he got to No. 46, breaking a mark long held by Hale Irwin. Langer is also the top money-winner all-time on the tour.

He’s one of three players to reach the $20 million mark. Six players on this list have surpassed the $15 million mark. There are 31 at $10 million.

As you make your way through this list, keep in mind:

  • Gary Player is 90th all-time with $6,049,029
  • Jack Nicklaus ranks 147th with $3,372,207
  • Arnold Palmer is 211th with $1,765,795

There are 649 names listed in all, with Mike Balliet bringing up the rear with $736 in career tour earnings.

Where Scottie Scheffler Ranks In PGA Tour Money List After $8.5m Won In Last Two Weeks

W orld No.1 Scottie Scheffler produced a memorable final-round at The Players Championship , surging through the field with an eight-under-par 64 to become the first player to defend the PGA Tour’s flagship event.

With ‘only’ eight PGA Tour titles and one Major Championship title to his name, it’s perhaps a little too early to start making comparisons with the greats of the game, but there are signs that the 27-year-old is beginning to put a bit of daylight between himself and his nearest challengers.

The American, who was struggling with his putting last season , has played seven times on the PGA Tour this year, and has finished no worse than tied 17th. In his last five tournaments, he has not finished outside the top ten, and his last two have been stunning victories at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players Championship.

Although Scheffler's motivation for winning trophies, not money, is fairly evident, his earnings over the last couple of weeks make for impressive reading.

Since joining the PGA Tour in 2020, Scheffler has banked approximately $53.5 million in prize money on the PGA Tour, nearly 16% of which has come in the last week, courtesy of back-to-back victories. Already this year, he’s accumulated just shy of $11 million in prize money – not bad for a non LIV Golf player.

What's The Most Prize Money Won In A PGA Tour Season?

Scheffler appears to have a license to print dollar bills, and is well on track to beat his own record of most official PGA Tour prize money earned in a single season, the $21,014,342 that he amassed in 2023, nearly $4.5 million more than Jon Rahm.

Given the increase in prize money that has occurred over time, it’s difficult to compare one year with another, and to judge today’s great players with those from other eras but, for reference, Woods earned approximately $9 million in 2000, a year in which he won nine times, three of which were Major Championships. Scheffler has pocketed $8.5 million for winning his last two tournaments.

It’s no surprise, therefore, to see Scheffler climbing the career earnings list at a rapid rate. After his Players Championship success, he moved to number 14 on the all-time list, jumping above Rahm.

Who Has Won The Most Prize Money On The PGA Tour?

It’s really just loose change that separates him from Sergio Garcia in 13th spot, and by the end of the season, should he match 2023's earnings, he would comfortably move into the top 10.

It’s Woods that leads the way at the top of this list. The 15-time Major winner is the only player to have won more than $100 million in PGA Tour prize money – $120,954,766 to be exact; then comes Phil Mickelson ($96,572,310); Rory McIlroy ($80,893,763); Dustin Johnson ($75,417,837); and Jim Furyk ($71,507,269).

For further reference, Jack Nicklaus, arguably the game's greatest ever player, won $5.7 million in prize money on the PGA Tour, which ranks number 363 on the all-time list.

Scheffler certainly won’t need to win anywhere near Woods’ 82 titles to top the list. However, it’s victories that Scheffler is chasing right now. How close will he get to Woods’ nine of 2000?

Sunday could be a big day for Keith Mitchell. The 32-year-old took the lead at the Valspar Championship in dramatic fashion on Saturday, holing out from the fairway on the 18th hole for eagle to claim a two-shot advantage heading into the final round.

A win at Innisbrook’s Copperhead course would mark the second of Mitchell’s career, following his 2019 victory at the Honda Classic. And, it would come with a sweet payday: $1.512 million of an $8.4 million purse.

But Mitchell’s chasers aren’t going to make it easy for him. Two-time PGA Tour winner Mackenzie Hughes is only two shots back, and 11 other players are within four shots of Mitchell’s lead at 10 under, including Cameron Young and Brendon Todd (-7) and Adam Hadwin (-6).

Who is the last PGA Tour player to win three straight tournaments?

When did we last see a player go back-to-back-to-back on the PGA Tour?

By Cody Williams | 10:48 AM EDT

Texas Children's Houston Open - Round Three

Scottie Scheffler entered the week at the 2024 Houston Open with history as a real possibility. The No. 1-ranked golfer in the world teed it up at Memorial Park trying to win three straight tournaments on the PGA Tour , or at least three consecutive starts for Scheffler.

It got started at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and then continued with a win at THE PLAYERS Championship. Scheffler then took a week off at Valspar but came around to his home state of Texas to play at the Houston Open as his final prep for The Masters . And as you'd expect with how he's played -- and with the improvements since switching to the mallet putter -- he was tied for the 54-hole lead going into the final round.

How historic would three straight wins on the PGA Tour be and when was the last time it happened? We have you covered with who the last golfer to accomplish the feat was and a look back at the best winning streaks in PGA Tour history.

Who was the last player to win three straight PGA Tour tournaments?

Dustin Johnson in 2017 was the last PGA Tour player to win three consecutive starts on the PGA Tour. Fresh off his maiden major championship victory at the US Open the year prior, he started out early 2017 on a torrid tear, winning the then-Genesis Open. In his next start, he edged out Tommy Fleetwood at the WGC-Mexico Championship. He then completed his trifecta at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, defeating Jon Rahm 1-up in the finals of the tournament at that event.

Of course, that run is most notably remembered for what happened after. In that form, Johnson was favored to win The Masters in April just two weeks after winning the Match Play event. However, the now-LIV Golf star reportedly fell down the stairs at a house in Augusta, forcing him to withdraw from The Masters.

Prior to Johnson, Rory McIlroy was the previous last golfer to win three straight starts and his might've been more impressive in 2014 as he reeled off a win at The Open Championship, then at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational, and then at the PGA Championship. That was, incidentally, his last major championship win.

It had been 10 years since a PGA Tour player had won three straight events they played before McIlroy as Vijay Singh was the last to do it prior to 2014, doing so in the 2004 season. Of course, before Singh, Tiger Woods accomplished the feat... twice, winning three straight in both 2000 and 2001.

Longest PGA Tour winning streaks ever

While winning three straight PGA Tour events is impressive enough, it's not even close to the longest consecutive streak of wins in golf on the biggest tour. That belongs to Byron Nelson, who won 11 straight starts back in 1945, a truly absurd feat. So let's take a look at the longest winning streaks in PGA Tour history with Nelson leading the way, even ahead of that Tiger Woods guy.

Perhaps the most incredible part of Nelson's 28-tournament winning streak is that it ended, only for him to promptly go on another run of four-straight wins. It's also no surprise that Tiger appears frequently on this list with separate streaks of seven, six, five, and two different three-tournament winning streaks. More incredibly, all but the five-event streak came within the span of 1999-2001.

As for other players to have won three straight events, it's a who's who list in golf history that includes Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Tom Watson, Sam Snead, Jonnny Miller, Nick Price, David Duval and many more.
