- GazzAnne 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Not recommended Tour unaffordable with 5 kids, so just had an ice cream and milkshake at cafe and at the shop. Milkshake very ordinary and rocky road was the worse I have ever had in my life. Read more Written 29 January 2024
- jebskulker 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Average tasting chocolate, tour looked like an extensive tourist trap I arrived in the carpark and saw a huge line snaking out the door, so I went to see what it was, and people were lining up to pay $18 each ($12 for children) for a chocolate factory tour. I had a look at the website and I can't imagine paying $18 for a chocolate exhibition, let alone a family of 2 adults and 2 kids having to pay $60, absolutely extortionate. Anyway, there was no line to enter the actual chocolate shop, but of course there's no clear signs to tell you this until you walk right up to the door. The chocolate prices were quite high, but I figured the price would match the quality, so I bought a $11 piece of rocky road and a $6 bar of chocolate with pineapple in it. How wrong I was. There were barely any pineapple pieces in it. Honestly, it didn't taste much better than supermarket chocolate. Also, the rocky road had square pieces of jelly in it. So lazy to add what was clearly store-bought jelly which added nothing to the flavour. Jelly is not part of a rocky road recipe! It was close to tasteless. Just a waste of money. The history of how to get cocoa from the beans was interesting and there’s a few interactive things as well. All in all, a good experience. The History of Phillip island Chocolate Factory Region
Long before the Europeans came to Australia’s shores, the Aboriginal people roamed Phillip Island. They were known as the Bunurong tribe, but they were not, permanent residents of the island. Instead only visiting during the muttonbird season, to hunt and steal their eggs. The first European to discover the Island was George Bass, who was an explorer at the time. He travelled down from Port Jackson in 1798, and due to the island being on the west side of his ship, he named the region ‘Western Port’. The name was later changed to honour Sir Arthur Phillip, who was the very first governor of New South Wales. However, even after its discovery by Europeans, the island did not become a permeant home until 1842, when it was leased by two brothers wanting to herd sheep. The first settlement on the island wasn’t until 1868, with the first wave of residences finding it quite a harsh place to live.
