Below we will cover how you can travel between Rome and Athens and of course, traveling from Athens to Rome!

Rome To Athens By Plane

Rome is located 1,050 kilometers (651 miles) from Athens. A trip that can be easily covered with a direct flight that usually never takes more than 2 hours. If you would like to fly from Rome to Athens, planes depart from the airports of Ciampino and Fiumicino, but they will all land at Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport, about 35 km from the center of Athens.

Typically, about 35 flights are running every week, and — of course — weekend and holiday schedules can vary significantly in summer. It is always a great idea to start searching at least four months before your trip to plan every single detail and get the most convenient fees.

The companies that cover the route are both national airlines, Alitalia and Aegean , both of them with fees on the mid-range side of costs (from 150 to 250 euro depending on seasonality, luggage, time of the day, day of the week, and a dozen of different factors).

Budget airlines connecting Rome to Athens are Ryanair, Volotea, Easy Jet, Sky Express, and Wizz Air. When it comes to these small air companies, prices can range immensely, from a flash-sale ticket costing under 10 euro to air fairs sometimes reaching almost the same prices as those of more prestigious airlines such as TAP, Malta Airlines others.

So it is always a question of hunting for the perfect price at the right time and playing with various factors to get the best fee on the market.

If you’re looking for the quickest means of transportation from Italy to Greece, flying is the way to go .

Getting From Rome To Athens By Train Or Bus

Greece With KIds - What to do in Greece with kids - Athens - Parthenon, Akropolis

Although not as convenient as traveling by plane, both regarding ticket prices and time spent traveling , it is also possible to travel to Athens by road… or almost!

This option includes changing from train to ferry and from the ferry to bus along the way. Prices can go up a lot, and time spent traveling often seems endless.

Italy’s high-speed trains, Trenitalia Frecce (Frecciarossa, Frecciargento, and Frecciabianca), offer four different service classes: Standard, Premium, Business, and Executive. All of them feature free Wi-Fi and include a seat reservation. Tickets can only be purchased before boarding the train and need to be validated in advance.

From Rome, you can travel by train to any of the four different ports that connect Italy with Greece , and from there, you would need to get on a ferry to cross the Ionian Sea. So you can travel from Rome to Bari, Ancona, Venice or Trieste, and from there either to Igoumenitsa or Patras, on mainland Greece .

The trip should then continue either again by rain or by bus until you reach the center of Athens . The whole itinerary could take anything from 20 to 36 hours (or more), and it is virtually impossible to do it with more convenient fees than the ones offered by airlines (both low cost and regular ones).

Italotreno is an alternative to Trenitalia; it is the country’s first private train line operating super comfortable high-speed trains on the same tracks as Trenitalia.

This modern company reaches 21 stations across the country, including the popular route Rome-Venice ( from where travelers can board a ferry to Greece) . Italo features four classes of service with free Wi-Fi.

An exciting feature is that the company also offers an integrated train-bus service that takes passengers from the main train stations to other Italian cities, a service that could be handy if looking to reach different port destinations on the Ionian coast .

For example, getting on a train in Rome to reach Bari Central Station can cost you from 30 to 80 euro, and the trip can last up to 4.5 hours. Add to that the time and cost of crossing to Patras (from 54 euro, 16.5 hours). Once in Patras, you can either rent a car and drive to Athens (2 hours) or continue by bus.

The bus journey typically lasts 2.5 hours (about 207 kilometers), and the ticket costs 25 euro. Approximately 127 buses are running every week on this route , and KTEL Achaias offer the services.

The route Rome-Bari-Patras-Athens is probably the most popular for train-ferry-bus travel, which ends up taking about 23 hours (without counting lay-off times), and the fee can range from about 105 to 160 euro. Although you can easily get from Italy to Greece by ferry , it’s the many Italy to Greece flights that still look like the most comfortable, convenient, and cheap way to travel from Rome to Athens.

Instead, the shortest route is Rome-Bari-Igoumenitsa-Athens, and although the time on the ferry shortens from 16.5 to 13 hours, the ticket price is also 55 euro, so there are not much savings choosing this route. The road trip from Igoumenitsa to Athens takes up to 7 hours and the ticket costs 60 euro. The total fee ranges between 145 to 190 euro.

Of course, if you’d like to travel from Athens to Rome by train, you simply have to reserve this itinerary.

Driving From Rome To Athens

Greece With KIds - What to do in Greece with kids - Athens - Changing of the guard

Probably the longest way to get from Rome to Athens is to do it by car. However, it can be the most rewarding experience if you plan several exploration roads along the way and take the time to discover the landscape and geography of the different countries you will see as you go.

There are two main routes from Rome to Ancona or Brindisi by car. The first of them is driving along the Adriatica Highway, checking on cities such as Pescara, Foggia, or Bari to reach Brindisi, then and board a ferry to Igoumenitsa. Alternatively, it is possible to drive from Rome to Bari along with Highway A1 and stop in stunning Italian places such as Napoli, Avelino, or Altamura.

The trip from Rome to Bari by car can last from 4 to 6 hours. To the cost of petrol, it is necessary to add the cost of toll roads along the way.

A different alternative is to drive northbound from Rome, passing through cities such as Florence, Bologna, Venice, and Trieste, to then cross countries such as Slovenia, Croatia, and North Macedonia to finally reach Greece. Once there, don’t miss a stop in cities such as Thessaloniki , Katerini, Larissa, or Volos.

Private Transfers

Much like a taxi, except you can book ahead and have a driver waiting for you at the airport terminal. Someone to carry your bags, lead the way, and, best of all, you’ll know the fixed cost ahead of time, no matter the crazy traffic.

Get a quote on your private transfers here.

This trip covers a distance of 2,370 kilometers and cannot be done in less than 2 or 3 days . Along the way, you will discover beautiful Italian and Greek cities and towns and other lesser-known European destinations.

Driving from Rome to Athens is significantly longer, both in distance and time, than flying from Rome to Athens or using trains and a ferry from Italy to Athens. It is, however, one of southern Europe’s most incredible road trips and well worth considering!

So, tell us, how will you get from Rome to Athens? Will you take flights from Rome to Greece? Or perhaps opt for the longer route and take trains and ferries from Italy to Greece?

Hop on a fast train from Rome, Naples, Florence, Venice or Milan to the southern Italian port of Bari, then sail across the Adriatic to Greece by overnight ferry.  It's the comfortable and scenic no-fly way from Italy to Greece.

small bullet point

Italy ► Athens

On arrival in Bari , you can walk the 1.9 km from the station to the port entrance in 25 minutes, a stroll through Bari's pleasant old town past the cathedral and castle , see correct walking map from the station to the port entrance gate (If Google tells you any different, trust me, not Google!).  Alternatively, a taxi will take 10 minutes.  Bus 50 runs from Bari Centrale station to the road outside the port gate roughly every 40 minutes.  Map of Bari showing station, port entrance, check-in building & Superfast Ferries berth .

Day 1, sail from Bari to Patras by overnight ferry.

The ferry sails from Bari at 19:30 on Mondays-Saturdays, arriving Patras at 13:00 next day (day 2)

On Sundays the ship sails at 13:30, too early to make connections from Milan.

You can check sailing times & dates at using the Direct Ferries website or at www.superfast.com or www.ferriesingreece.com .

You should check in at the Superfast desk on the ground floor of the cruise terminal (Terminal Crociere) at Bari port with passport & booking number to get your boarding pass, ideally 3 hours before departure in summer, although in practice 2 hours or even 1½ hours is normally fine.

You then walk 500m from check-in to the ferry, board the ferry via the foot passenger gangway at the stern and head up the escalator to the main lounge and reception desk to get your cabin key.

This comfortable ferry has a self-service restaurant, bar, lounge and sun deck.  You can book a deck place (a good & cheap option in summer if you have your own sleeping bag), a reclining seat or various types of cabin, all with private shower & toilet.  Strolling the decks in the morning sun as the ship cruises past the islands of Cephalonia and Ithaca is the nicest part of the trip, and it's a wonderful way to arrive in Greece.

Athens ► Italy

Day 1, travel from Athens to Patras by train+bus

An air-conditioned train leaves from Athens main railway station at 08:00 arriving at Kiato at 09:20, connecting into a Greek Railways bus departing Kiato at 09:30 and arriving Patras at 12:00.

You've time for lunch and a look around Patras.  There's a later 11:50 train from Athens arriving Kiato at 13:19, connecting with the 13:30 by bus arriving Patras at 15:20, but this leaves relatively little room for any major delay.  Check times locally, as they may change - you can find these train+bus times on www.hellenictrain.gr but it takes some finding - look under Destinations then Athens Suburban railway .

How much does it cost ?

How to buy tickets, what's the journey like .

Check in for the ferry

The Superfast Ferries check-in desks are on the ground floor of the cruise terminal (Terminal Crociere), the arrow in the photo below left indicates the entrance.  You should check in with passport & booking number to get your boarding pass, ideally 3h before departure especially in summer - although 2 hours or even 1½ hours is normally fine.  You then walk 500m from the check-in desk to the ferry, board via the foot passenger gangway at the stern, up the escalator to the main passenger lounge and reception desk to get your cabin key.  See location map .

Bari to Patras by overnight ferry

Superfast Ferries sail from Bari to Patras daily all year round, although Sunday sailings leave too early for same-day train connections from Milan.  If you book a 'deck place' you can use your own sleeping bag and set up camp in a covered area on deck near the stern.  For a few more pounds you can book a reclining seat.  Or you can book a berth in various types of cabin, all with private shower & toilet.  The ferry crossing is the best part of the journey, over deep blue waters and past many islands.

Travel from Patras to Athens by bus/train combo

On arrival at Patras port, take a taxi or bus the few kilometres from the ferry dock to the town centre.  Every hour, a bus run by Hellenic Train links Patras railway station with Kiato, connecting with an air-conditioned electric train along the Aegean to Athens.  Look out for the Corinth Canal as the train passes from the Peloponnese peninsula to the rest of Greece, blink and you'll miss it.

Connection to Corfu

The Bari-Patras ferry calls at Corfu on certain dates in summer, check with www.superfast.com .

It always calls at Igoumenitsa on the Greek mainland, all year-round.  If you can't find a direct ferry to Corfu, book the ferry from Bari to Igoumenitsa, then take the local ferry from Igoumenitsa to Corfu with Kerkyra Lines ( kerkyralines.com ).  These sail half a dozen times a day, crossing time 60-90 minutes, fare around €5-€10.  Buy a ticket at kerkyralines.com or when you get to Igoumenitsa.

Best of Italy and Greece (10 Days)

Trip overall was a good experience the tour director and our coach driver's were awesome!!! The hotel in Venice was awful outlet and lights didn't work their staff was rude and unaccomodating we couldn't use the pool on a hot day cause it was always closed thank God we only spent 1 day there with its filthy walls inside our room. We paid for one optional guide in Venice that was a joke the guide walked us to a abandoned church gave us some history on it and that was it went to St. Marks where none of us got to see the tomb and the tour was over didn't get close to our money's worth the entire group felt this way.

Top 4 airlines serving from Athens to Rome

Very bad experience during the boarding, the Aegean employees were very rude, and impatient with the passengers

Θα πρέπει να υπάρχει εστίαση στη γρήγορη και εύκολη επιβίβαση/αποβίβαση

aegean took off late, which made it impossible for us to make the next flight on air canada, we all ran to the terminal, the plane was still there but the air canada folks wouldn't let us board because they said the door was already closed. they told us we had to go all the way back to aegean desk to arrange another flight.

Priority transfer bag left behind in Amsterdam causing extreme difficulty and inconvenience on arrival destination Athens

different entrance during the boarding for gold members and business class

Our flight was canceled after we paid in full and began making further plans. we were refunded only around75% of what we paid! I strongly recommend against ordering Aegaen Airlines!

Very delayed. Plus lack of entertainment on board. Crew members were very nice

Crew was excellent. Food was ok for a short flight. Plane was a regular airliner without any entertainment. Crew members were delightful. Pilot took off and landed without ever feeling that it had touched down. Very professional pilot and staff

The food sandwich was OKAY for such a short flight. Crew were very caring. They helped my wife who has walking issues. They carried her bag and held her arm to help prevent tripping. All in all it was a professional effort on the part of all crew members. I highly recommend this crew of Aegean Airlines.

Seriously, every airline needs to improve their boarding procedures. Even though Sky Express boarded the furtheredt seats from the door first, it was still disappointing that it took so long to board.

Cannot take it dur to the delayed first flight. Staff at the desk very unfriendly.

A coffee at 7 am in the morning would have been nice.

We hope that soon Sky Express will have the entire airplane fleet refreshed. More new airplanes to fill the gap and expand further direct flights to new airports. Crew acts responsibly and kind, which is even more important at this pandemic period.

I was going to miss my connecting flight with sky Express also and the people in the office said they couldn't help me book another flight for the next day, but that I had to wait until anthens and go their office to help me. Other people on staff were friendly though.

Boarding process makes no sense for priority boarding or not since everyone gets crammed in a bus and everyone gets out without any difference.

The flight was 45 mins delayed but the crew provided water and necessities like tissues

The usual average Ryanair flight, but we landed 20 min before due time, which was very good.

While this flight from Dublin to Venice boarded on time, its departure was delayed by about an hour because, apparently, there were no demonstration kits on board, and we couldn't depart until the safety demonstration was completed. We were informed that we were in danger of losing our delayed slot if Ryanair engineering didn't provide the kits 'soon', which would have resulted in an additional two-hour delay. Thankfully, we didn't incur that additional delay. It's not clear where the source of this problem lies but it needs to be addressed to ensure it does not recur for other flights in the future.

You get what you pay for with RyanAir. This was a €60 round trip from Stockholm and every piece of it was just excruciating, from the plane being delayed by more than an hour, to having to stand out on the tarmac in the darkness at 3C and wind to wait for the plane to disembark its previous flight (why they do this is just cruel), to the crew keeping the lights on the entire flight despite it being so late so they could walk through the aisles and try to sell things. I always say “never again!” after flying RyanAir, but somehow end up getting lured by the prices…

The flight was canceled 2 days before, without any alternative offer

Flight was delayed due to weather so not much Ryanair could do about that - otherwise it was very efficient and smooth

I wouldn't like to fly with them anymore, I don't like their service, you can hardly take carry-on luggage because they charge you for everything, you can't ask for a glass of water, and the flight attendant tells you that they don't have any, that you have to Paying 3 euros for a bottle of water horrible, I don't recommend it, and they don't have anything low cost, because the plane ticket may not be expensive but what they charge you later for the rest, the flight becomes more expensive, it's the only airline that I don't like it so far, and I traveled a lot.

L'imbarco, personale scortese. Hanno voluto un sovrapprezzo di 70€ per un trolley che faticava ad entrare nel loro misuratore a causa delle ruote troppo rigide

The flight was delayed by more then 5 hours and we lost our connecting flight. We had to purchase new connecting flights to our expense.

Good. But there food was poor quality and 95% of movies didn't have English subtitles

I thought they had rebranded themselves in every aspect but it was quite the opposite. The food was terrible the service was sub-par. Overall it was not a good experience.

Service from staff was poor, food choices were limited. Air plane was not clean or hygienic and seemed like not cleaned for days. Seats were uncomfortable.

service from stAff was barely there , food choices were limited. AirPlane was not clean and seemed like it was not cleaned for days.. Seats were very uncomfortable.

I paid for premium seats and the last minute they changed the aircraft for a bigger one, they bumped me to another seat which was NOT at all comfortable for an 11 hour flight, will fight for a refund!!

The landing was catastrophic. I was very scared. I thought it were my last lminues. Pilotes should be more experienced

ALL services were good. An announcement should’ve been made at the end of the flight that filling out a customs form would not be necessary anymore for USA travelers entering Philadelphia.

The flight was smooth, the premier economy seats were comfortable, the flight crew were excellent. The on board food, however, was AWFUL. I suggest bringing your own food on board.

The flight was smooth, our premier economy seats were comfortable, the flight crew were especially fine - attentive, cheerful. The food, however was AWFUL. I advise bringing your own on board.

The service on board should have been better fast service

Taking the Ferry From Italy to Greece

Greece and Croatia

travel from rome to athens

The most common way to travel between Italy and Greece is by ferry. There are several Italian ports from which you can choose to take a ferry to Greece, Croatia, and other Mediterranean destinations. Following the introductions to these ports, you'll find a list of ferry booking sites that you can use to check schedules and book your trip.

Not all ferries run every day of the week, so be sure to check the schedules carefully. Most ferries have a restaurant and bar, but you can take your own food and drink on board to save money.

Brindisi is probably the Italian port most commonly associated with taking a ferry to Greece and has the most options. Frequent ferries leave Brindisi for Corfu, Kefalonia, Igoumenitsa, and Patras. It's possible to get between Brindisi and Corfu (the closest Greek port) in as little as six and a half hours. Departure times range from 11:00 a.m. to 23:00 (11 p.m.).

Brindisi, in the heel of the boot, is the most southern Italian ferry port. See Puglia map for location.

From Bari (southern Italy), you can take a ferry to Corfu, Igoumenitsa, and Patras in Greece and Dubrovnik, Split, and other ports in Croatia as well as to Albania. Most ferries leave in the evening and have cabins for sleeping, a bar, and sometimes a restaurant.

The fastest ferries travel between Bari and Corfu in about eight hours. Bari's ferry port is near the interesting historic center, Centro Storico , an excellent place to do some exploring before your departure. Near the port, try Osteria al Gambero if you have time for a meal.

If you're in central Italy (Marche region), Ancona may be the most convenient Italian port. From Ancona, ferries go to Igoumenitsa (taking 15 to 20 hours) and Patras (taking 20 to 23 hours) in Greece. Ferries also go to several ports in Croatia.

From Venice , you can take a ferry directly to Corfu, Igoumenitsa, or Patras. Taking a ferry from Venice is a nice alternative if you want to visit Venice. Ferries usually leave Venice in the evening and take close to 24 hours (or longer to Patras).

If you arrive in Venice by bus to take the ferry, there is usually a shuttle service between Venice's bus terminal and the ferry terminal. If you're already in Venice, you'll need to take a Vaporetto (water bus).

Websites for Ferries

It's a good idea to book your ferry ahead, especially during high season and if you want a cabin or plan to take your car. Sometimes it's possible to buy your ticket at the port on the day of departure. Some overnight ferries allow passengers to sleep on deck, but some require you to book a seat or bed. Ferries usually start boarding two hours before departure but check the ferry company information to be sure.

Here are websites where you can check schedules and buy tickets:

  • Viamare , all ports
  • Superfast Ferries , from Ancona and Bari
  • Direct Ferries , a UK booking site
  • Greece Ferries
