Trek Route & Difficulty

sudhagad fort

Sudhagad fort is an easy one-day trek and suitable for beginners as well.

However, if you want, you can camp overnight in the fort and return to the base village the next day.

The  trek distance  is around  3.5 kms  to reach the top, and it will take approximately  2-2.5 hours  with ample breaks.

The trek starts from Thakurwadi village (you will find signs pointing towards the trail of the fort).

The initial trek goes through plain farming lands & after 15 mins, you enter the thick forest; here, you will come across the first ladder section & stone steps section on the trail.

After the forest section, you reach another iron ladder which leads to proper steps made out of stone, leading you to the fort’s entry.

You can make your food arrangements at the top where you camp with the help of the local caretaker who stays at the wada on top of the fort.

Here’s a link to the GPX file of the route on  Ramblr .

Sudhagad Fort trek also known as Bhorapgad was built as a hill fort. It was built for defensive advantage due to rise in elevation  It is situated in Pali,Maharashtra and lies within the Sudhagad Wildlife Sanctuary.

According to sources, the Sudhagad Fort was built around in 2nd century B.C and is said to be the same age as the Thanale Caves and Khadsamble Caves which are not far from Sudhagad. It got its name Bhorapgad after the presiding deity, Bhoraidevi and was eventually named Sudhagad meaning sweet one in 1657, after the Marathas captured it from the Bahamani Sultan.

Owing to its large size, it was the only fort that was considered by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to be the capital of the Maratha Empire.

During the regime of Peshwas, the ‘Pantsachivas of Bhor- the Pant Sachiv family of Bhor state were made the keepers of the Sudhagad Fort but the fort became patron less in 1950 when the princely states were annexed. Since then it is in a state of wreckage.

Sudhagad Fort is at a height of 620m above sea level. The area surrounding the fort is the Sudhagad Wildlife Sanctuary. The Thakurwadi village is base village and is the starting point for the most used and popular route.

On reaching the fort, one can visit the Bhoraidevi temple which is well maintained and can see the ruins of two temples dedicated to Shiva. From the top of the fort, two lakes, a house, a large granary , some tombs and the shrine of Vrindavan can also be seen. The Sudhagad Fort offers a clear view of forts like Sarasgad, Korigad, Dhangad and Taila-Baila. The fort has a number of secret passages as well. The largest of the three doors on the fort is called the Maha Darwaja.

The slopes of the hill have Pandhri trees which are used as walking sticks.

The Sudhagad Fort trek has an easy trail and consists of slopes and steps carved of solid rocks. For vertical patches, long ladders have been provided for an easy climb. Upon reaching the entrance, the fort has three entrance gates-the Pachchapur Darwaja, the Dindi Darwaja and the Maha Darwaja, the largest one. One can also have a night stay at the Pantsachiv wada and Bhorai mata Mandir.

The base village is Thakurwadi village and from here it takes approximately 2.5 hours to reach the summit.

How to reach

The Sudhagad Fort is situated at 53 km west from Pune, 26 km  south from Lonavala, 11 km east from Pali district.

If travelling by private vehicle, one can come towards Khopoli which is not far from Lonavala, and then can reach Pali by asking the locals for directions. For public transport, from Mumbai, you can take an ST bus that will take you Vakan and from there you can hire a sharing auto to Pali.

From Panvel, direct buses are also available to Pali but are less frequent. The base village of the trek, Thakurwadi village, is 13 km from Pali and you will need to hire a private auto to reach there.

It's wonderful that you were careful with your planning. That stinks about the road condition making the roads a little hard to navigate at some points. We have that here too and it makes it hard on bike riders. But good road conditions matter.

TIPS/HACKS/SUGGESTION: Convenient Backpack For One Day Trek

My personal experience.

We got a train to Khopoli from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, so has per the plan we boarded 17:33 train from CST and reached Khopoli by 20:00.The base village of the Sudhagad Fort is Thakurwadi (approx. 45kms)from Khopoli railway station).

Now let me guide you on how I traveled from the station to this base village:

From Khopoli railway station go to khopoli bus stop; an auto ride on sharing basis will cost you Rs. 10. The distance from Khopoli bus stop to Pali-Balleshwar temple is 30km, for which we hitched a ride as the last bus from Khopoli bus stop was at 20:00, We decided to stay put for a night here & stayed at a hotel for just Rs.100. (Got this deal after a negotiating but cant reveal the hotel’s name,sorry)

The next morning at 7 AM we resumed our journey to Thakurwadi village, which was around 11kms from our current destination, it costed around Rs.17 in a state transport bus. And we arrived!! Once you reach the base village, I recommend that you have a word with the locals about the route to Sudhagad Fort, they will surely tell you and plus its a very easy route. First you will see a stairs (see pic below.)and then again some set of stairs. The route is well marked you will find it easy to hike towards the top of fort. (Browse through the images).

step on the way to sudhagad fort

When you pass the above the steps you would see a water body on the left hand side around 50-60 meter away After this you will reach the top of the fort in 20-30 minutes and will be able to spot a lake.

water body under the tree at Sudhagad fort

Now walk towards the right of the lake after which you would see the mansion (“waada” as known in Marathi) and the Taak Maak point. After exploring the fort and we took a nap in the mansion after which we headed back to the base village where the bus was at 15:00. (Another bus is available at 18:00 o’clock).

So to sum up the cost of this trek:

Train= CST – Khopoli (return)= Rs. 60

Bus= Khopoli – Pali (return)=Rs. 60

Stayed at pali = Rs.100- because of the delay missing out on the last

bus (extra cost )

Bus= Pali – Thakurwadi=Rs.34

Total expenditure=Rs. 254.

So if you are able to manage your time and everything is in place as per the plan, you can complete the trek in Rs.154 only. Just carry your lunch and snacks with you. If you have any queries , please feel free to contact me. I am just like you – A traveler seeking thrill by discovering new places amazing adventures!.

TIP/HACKS/SUGGESTION : Best Shoes with great grip on mountains, which is used by almost all Trekker’s

Route : One has to head towards Khopoli which is a bit ahead of Lonavala. From Khopoli you can ask the locals for directions to Pali or use google maps to get there. Trek Route: There are 2 base villages from where you can start the actual trek. One is via Pacchapur(Thakurwadi) village and the other is via Dhondse village. During all our trips, we've gone via the Thakurwadi route which is said to be relatively easy than the Dhonse route. Thakurwadi is around 12 kilometres from Pali. If you are a beginner you can always hire a guide from the base village to help you with the trek route.

Difficulty level and other tips : This is a simple trek and requires less stamina than other forts in the vicinity. But always ensure that you carry plenty of water with you and something you can munch on in case you are hungry.

What to see at Sudhagad:

  • Big Entrance of the fort
  • Secret Escape Route
  • View of surrounding Valleys and mountains
  • Stairs and some ruins

Camping and overnight stay : Camping can be done if you are planning to couple your trek with Sarasgad fort. Otherwise it does not make a lot of sense to camp at Sudhagad. There are caves which can be used as a shelter. But it is always recommended that you carry your own tents. Carry some ready to cook food that can be made at night on a bonfire. Also ensure that for overnight trek you carry plenty of water, at least 4 litres per person. The villages surrounding the fort are quite remote and hence we recommend that you carry water and food from the city itself.
