Broome to Darwin 4WD Adventure Tour

Broome to Darwin 4WD Adventure

The tour in general was excellent. Tour guide Flick was unforgettable. Very informative, very experienced and interesting. Funny. Fierce defender of Aboriginal people and culture. I agreed with her views. Tour guide Adam also great. Very experienced. Funny. Friendly. His views on Aboriginal people may offend / confuse city Greenies like me but it's good that he is honest about them as this also offers an insight into how other Aussies think, and travel is about broadening the mind, whether you agree or disagree with what you are hearing. For example, this exchange: Adam: "I've worked with an Aboriginal guy on the mines - can't tell you about their culture but he was a good guy to work with. As for the four teenage ^%$^#% that stole my car - that's another story." Me: "Oh yep - but they're locking up kids as young as 10 - that shouldn't happen - they're trying to raise the age of criminality so kids as young as 10 don't get locked up now." Adam: "Oh yeah, you know - 'poor us'." Me: "But them stealing your car - it'll be like 'you stole our land so we'll steal your car' won't it?" Adam: "It's not their land though." Me: "But that'll be their thinking won't it? You stole our land so we'll steal your car?" Adam: "It's not their land though is it? Look, you know chaos theory, like if a butterfly flaps its wings it can set off a whole chain of events? If the settlers had never come here, they wouldn't have even been born. So Adam Goodes can go get f****."

Less dust than the Gibb River Road but just as much fun!

Day 1 – Broome to Fitzroy Crossing, 398kms, 4.25hrs

Overnight: Fitzroy River Lodge – Motel Room

Day 2 – Fitzroy Crossing to Halls Creek, 287kms, 3hrs

If you didn’t arrive in time yesterday for a Geikie Gorge cruise don’t miss out on doing one this morning. Take your time & drive to Halls Creek with a stop at Mimbi Caves, a 400 million year old Devonian reef system. It will also be worth a visit to China Wall, a natural white stone wall which looks just like a miniature ‘Great Wall of China’. It is located just outside of the town of Halls Creek.

Overnight: Kimberley Hotel – Standard Room

Day 3 – Halls Creek to Kununurra, 358kms, 3.75hrs

Travel to Kununurra today, home to Lake Argyle, the Ord River, Kelly’s Knob and Elephant Rock.  The rest of the day is yours to relax and enjoy the town of Kununurra. Take a walk to Kelly’s Knob Lookout late in the afternoon for a great view of the town and valley at sunset.

Overnight: Freshwater Apartments – Studio

Day 4 – Kununurra

A couple of ideas to consider are a full day Bungle Bungle tour including scenic flight down to the Bungle Bungles, a ground tour including a 3km walk into Cathedral Gorge and a return scenic flight over the ancient Ragged Ranges and the Argyle Diamond Mine.  Another option is a guided tour with a beautiful cruise down the Ord River. Day 5 – Kununurra to Lake Argyle, 71kms, 1hr

Head to Lake Argyle this morning and admire the amazing marine environment created by the damming of the Ord River.  Join a Sunset cruise this afternoon and learn about the natural history and development of Lake Argyle and the Ord River Irrigation System.  As the sun begins to set you can enjoy a refreshing swim in the cool waters of the Lake and marvel at the spectacular scenery.

Overnight: Lake Argyle Resort – Standard Studio

Day 6 – Lake Argyle to Nitmiluk Gorge, 541kms, 6hrs

Leave the East Kimberley and travel into the Northern Territory. Today travel to Katherine, renowned for Nitmiluk Gorge and National Park. It is over 6 hours driving today so an early lunch at Timber Creek should help to break the journey.

Overnight: Nitmiluk Chalets – One Bedroom Cabin

Day 7 – Nitmiluk Gorge

You are staying just a 600 metre walk to the departure point for boat cruises and canoes at Nitmiluk Gorge. Take in the diversity of the landscapes and habitats with one of the cruises on offer or maybe a canoeing adventure, a visual treat for any nature lover. A sunset cruise with delicious Australian cuisine can be enjoyed, whilst taking in the magnificent backdrop of the Nitmiluk Gorge, with its cliff face changing colour as the sun sets.

Overnight: Nitmiluk Chalets – One Bedroom Cabin

Day 8 – Nitmiluk Gorge to Jabiru, 331kms, 3.5hrs

Leave Katherine this morning for an easy drive to kakadu National Park. Stop at Kakadu Lodge Cooinda to take a cruise on the Yellow Water Billabong. At least 60 bird species including Whistling Ducks and Magpie Geese are found in the wetlands. There are also plenty of crocodiles in their natural habitat, and buffalo on the floodplains.

Overnight: Anbinik Kakadu Resort – Anbinik Suite

Day 9 – Jabiru

Today you are free to enjoy the sites of Kakadu. The Guluyambi Cultural Cruise on Kakadu’s scenically spectacular East Alligator River or an exceptional Aboriginal Cultural & Heritage Day Tour into Arnhem Land & Northern Kakadu are just a couple of ideas. A visit to Warradjan Aboriginal Centre and/or Bowali Visitor Centre is highly recommended.

Day 10 – Jabiru to Darwin, 253kms, 2.75hs

Depart Anbinik Kakadu Resort visiting the galleries of rock art at Nourlangie Rock, one of the most significant Aboriginal art sites in Kakadu National Park. And if time permits, Ubirr to see superbly preserved Aboriginal rock art. Your journey finishes in Darwin today with time to reflect on the memories collected.

The sun rises early in the Kimberley so there’s no point in sleeping in, we’ll pick you up from your Broome accommodation at 6am and head for the wilderness.

Leaving the comfort of the coastal community behind we head East for what many consider to be one of the last great expanses of rugged wilderness areas remaining in the world, the mighty Kimberley Region of Northern Western Australia.

Our first stop is the famous prison tree near Derby, a huge hollowed out Boab tree which was used as a prison in the early pioneering days, this is not only an amazing natural wonder but also gives us an insight into to challenging relationship between the early settlers and Aboriginal people of the Kimberley.

Next we head to Windjana Gorge, a huge gorge cut into the ranges over millennium to reveal beautiful scenery of high vertical cliffs, sandy beaches and meandering creek. We head off on a hike at Windjana of about 4km and often see freshwater crocodiles swimming in the clear waterholes.

From Windjana it’s off to our first wilderness bush camp.

Bush camping is a great experience whether you are an experienced outback drover or first time city slicker, there is nothing like finding a great spot of wilderness in the middle of nowhere, setting up a campfire, cooking up a feast on the fire and then rolling out the swags under the Kimberley night sky.

Tents are provided for those a little nervous about the under the stars experience.

  • Depart Broome
  • Boab Prison Tree
  • Windjana Gorge
  • Hiking: 2 – 4km
  • Camp: Bush Camp

With no roof over our heads the breaking dawn is our new alarm clock and we rise early. The mobile phones get packed up with the camping gear as they become useless and we head off nice and early for our first activity, exploring Tunnel Creek.

Tunnel Creek is an amazing natural phenomenon and holds great significance to the local Aboriginal people, and getting there early normally guarantees we have the place for ourselves. It is a 750 metre long stretch of creek, which runs underground through one of the oldest cave systems in Western Australia. Many aboriginal rock paintings are present in the cave and it was a hideout of the Aboriginal warrior, Jandamarra in 1897.

From Tunnel Creek we get on the Gibb River Road, a 700km long outback dirt road which runs between Derby and Kununurra, it’s not the easiest route, the track is often rough, there are a number or deep water crossings and a 4WD vehicle is essential. However it’s an amazing travel route as along the length of the Gibb River Road are vast tracts of wilderness and numerous rivers, gorges and waterfalls to explore.

The first water fall is Bell Gorge. After a 20-minute walk we come to a beautiful creek, which flows through the centre of this impressive gorge and cascades over numerous falls. A deep swimming hole at the base of the main waterfall, surrounded by shady ledges and high cliffs, is an ideal lunch spot.

From Bell Gorge we push on along the Gibb for a little before finding our 2nd bush Camp for the night, another remote wilderness location where we collect firewood, set up camp and settle in for the night.

  • Tunnel Creek
  • Gibb River Road
  • Hiking: 4km
  • Camp: Bush camp

Another day of adventure awaits.

Emerging from camp it’s back on the Gibb River Road and onto Manning Gorge where we spend most of the day.

White sandy beaches with a Pandanus tree lined waterway opening into a wide clear waterhole greet us only minutes after starting the walk. We must swim across the river before following a trail leading to the top of gorge. The gorge has a waterfall plus a deep wide swimming hole surrounded by granite cliffs & rock outcrops. It is a spectacular setting with hidden examples of Aboriginal Rock Art.

The return route from manning Gorge is a little less conventional as we swim and rock hop along the creek before reaching the main waterhole where it started.

Depending on the time available, Galvans and / or Adcock Gorge’s are also visited.

On departing Manning we locate our bush camp on the sandy banks of the Gibb River under the gum trees.

  • Manning Gorge

An early morning swim in cool waters of the Gibb River is a great way to wake up.

From our camp the day starts with a short walk to a little known Aboriginal Art site containing some fine examples of Rock Art and your guide will be able to explain the significance of the paintings.

From here it’s back on “The Gibb” where we continue on our Easterly trek. Arriving at the Pentecost River we are presented with an incredible landscape of a wide river surrounded by rugged Cockburn Ranges, a classic Kimberley scene.

Here we need to drive the 4WD through the Pentecost River, driving a vehicle across a 60 metre wide outback river which is occupied by Salt Water Crocodiles is not something you do every day, but it’s only way through so across we go.

A short distance from the Pentecost is El Questro Station, home of more beautiful landscapes, one of which is Emma Falls. A hike through a spectacular gorge takes us to very high and narrow falls with a deep cool plunge pool where we can swim.

Another bush camp under the stars awaits us.

  • Gibb River Rd
  • Pentacost river

One of the highlights of this Kimberley trip is Purnululu National Park, more commonly known as the Bungle Bungles.

We spend 2 days in this region hiking and exploring the Gorges and amazing landscapes the area contains. The long and dusty track into the Bungles is spectacular; it winds its way through valleys, over ranges and through creeks before arriving at what must be one of the world’s most unique landscapes.

After locating our campsite we head off for Echidna Chasm for a hike into the domes, following a creek to it’s source at a narrow passage buried within the Bungles.

The day ends with a spectacular sunset from a hill top vantage point.

  • Bungle Bungles
  • Echidna Chasm
  • Bungle sunset
  • Hike: 3 – 4 km
  • Camp: Purnululu National Park Campsite

With an early rise we are able to take advantage of a spectacular Bungle Bungles sunrise, from our vantage point we watch the show with a cup of tea or coffee and breakfast from a remote location.

A short drive from the sunrise area is the trailhead for the Cathedral Gorge hike, a spectacular hike though the beehive formations to Cathedral Gorge. The gorge itself is one of the most impressive geological formations you are likely to see anywhere.

From here there is the opportunity to take a scenic flight over the Bungles, helicopter rides from 18 minutes are available. From the air the bungles take on a completely new perspective and the open chopper is sensational. Scenic flights are at your own expense and organised on the day.

Another bush camp awaits, this time on a lovely creek with a sandy beach.

  • Bungle Sunrise
  • Cathedral Gorge
  • Beehive Formations
  • Optional scenic flight

From our bush camp we head for Kununurra, the first sign of civilisation we have seen for a week. As we approach town the mobile phones start beeping and we take the opportunity to catch up on the world with some free time in this classic outback town while your guide replenishes supplies.

From Kununurra we head to Lake Argyle for what is regularly voted as the highlight of the tour. Lake Argyle is a huge freshwater lake teaming with wildlife, from wallabies in the rocky shores, to freshwater crocodiles to birdlife. We board a boat where a local guide shows us the lake, there is time to swim before we watch sunset from the water and then camp on one of the remote islands.

This is a great experience, knowing you are the only people on a single island in the middle of one of the most remote lakes in the world is unforgettable.

We have a campfire, the sky is full of stars and the cool water is inviting to those brave souls who want a midnight swim.

  • Lake Argyle Cruise
  • Lake Argyle Island camp
  • Walking: 1km
  • Camp: Bush Camp on Island

The sunrise from our island camp is again unforgettable.

We pack up camp, re-board the boat and head back to our vehicle.

From Lake Argyle we push East towards the Northern Territory border and Keep River National Park.

Keep River is another amazing location where there are a number of hikes we can take before settling down for another bush camp.

  • Return to Vehicle
  • Victoria Hwy
  • Keep River National Park
  • Walking: 2 – 4km

On the final day of our big adventure we arrive in Katherine. Depending on the time available we explore Katherine Gorge or Edith falls, both offer more adventure, swimming and spectacular landscapes.

We normally arrive into Darwin at around 6pm, your guide will conclude the tour by dropping you off at your accommodation.

Cut through by the Lennard River, which runs during the wet season then breaks up into little billabongs during the dry, this gorge attracts many species of bird and bat and is a great spot to see wild freshwater crocodiles. We’ll set up camp for the last time together in the Western Kimberley region.

We continue through the Napier Range on a guided walk-through at Tunnel Creek, a vast cave system that extends 750 metres underground. Inside, shards of sunlight stream in through crevices, little bats flutter about and enormous stalactites rear down from the ceiling. Then make the final drive on to Broome, hopefully arriving in time for a stunning Cable Beach sunset.

Essential things to pack

  • Lightweight clothing. You will need to bring a mixture of lightweight clothing and layers. Long shirts and pants are useful to protect against the harsh Australian sun. Clothes should be easy to wash and dry.
  • Comfortable closed-in shoes will help to protect your feet from cuts and scratches when walking through bush/grass-lands, and will also act as a barrier protection in rare cases against bites or stings.
  • Sun protection – hat, sunscreen, sunglasses
  • Water bottle. We recommend at least a 1.5litre capacity.
  • A headlamp or torch is recommended for around your accommodation at night.
  • Camera with spare batteries.
  • A spare pair of shoes that can get wet, along with two towels.
  • A pair of slip on shoes/sandals that you can carry in your day pack for riding the bus and casual wear.

Important Booking Info

  • Please Note: The following itinerary is to be used as a guide only, road conditions, changing weather over the seasonal period and multiple other factors require that the actual itinerary is structured for the best possible result. Our tour structure is flexible and is designed to change if required.

To get the most out of this trip you need to be prepared for walks of between 3-9 km on some days. This may be on rough ground and perhaps getting feet wet in rivers and creeks. From Oct to March in the Red Centre, West Coast, and South of Australia you will experience temperatures of over 35 degrees Celsius (and sometimes well into the 40’s) so be prepared to endure extra physical stress due to the heat at these times, especially while on walks. In the Top End of Australia (Kimberley and Kakadu) temperatures in the shoulder months of April, May and September, October humidity levels can be high and sometimes slightly uncomfortable.

This tour is only for fit, active, and capable travellers who can hike 3-9kms on consecutive days over uneven terrain, often having to climb or clamber over surfaces. Some hikes may require sections of walking/swimming through water. The temperatures can be extreme during the day, placing strain on the body. Due to the remote nature of the Kimberley region we use bush camps with limited facilities on some nights. This trip is swag camping. The operator reserves the right to assess the fitness capability of passengers prior to tour departure. Tour is not suitable for children.

These extreme outside temperatures can also place stress on the air-conditioning units within our vehicles which can make travelling uncomfortable. Your tour guide will assist with regular breaks and information to assist in keeping well hydrated.

You’ll spend most nights of the trip sleeping in outback camping grounds. While it’s all a part of the adventure, facilities can be extremely basic.

Camping (with facilities) (3 nights), Hostel (4 nights), Permanent safari camp (with shared facilities) (2 nights)

On tour you will be basic camping. Which consists of portable, easy to erect, dome tents. We provide comfortable swags (canvas bedroll including 2 inch mattresses). You can either bring your own sleeping bag or purchase one from us. Pillows are not provided so you can bring your own if you wish.

This trip is specifically designed to embrace the outback and provide an authentic camping experience. It is for this reason, that we do not offer upgrades on this trip. Eight out of the nine nights have basic toilet and shower facilities, however on nights 3 and 4 we stay in the remote Purnululu National Park where only basic long-drop toilet facilities are available. Shower facilities are not available on these nights. Please ensure this level of camping is suitable for you.

Your tour includes meals as indicated in our itinerary as B, L and D for breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. On most days, breakfast, lunch and dinner will be included.

Our tours are activity and participation-based. During your travels with us you will have the opportunity to assist with daily activities such as setting up camp, helping prepare meals and clearing dishes. None of this is difficult however many hands make light work and any assistance provided to crew is always much appreciated. Most people agree that this type of activity helps you feel like less of a tourist and more of an explorer.

All food for this trip is purchased and packed prior to your group leaving on day one. After we’ve left town it can be very difficult to source special dietary requests.

Travellers with special dietary requirements or food allergies are required to advise us at the time of booking. You may be asked to pay for any additional food if you have not advised us of any special dietary requirements. Due to the often remote nature of our trips, food is basic but plentiful and delicious.

The below dietary needs can be easily catered for.

Vegetarian Gluten Free Dairy Free (soy available ) Pork Free

Please bring your own staples (nuts, bars, snacks) if you require a diet differing from the above.

* Religious and more specific dietary requirements are generally unable to be catered for on these trips.

Our trips generally finish early evening. We recommend booking one night post accommodation in your end city and planning onward travel for the following day. We cannot accept responsibility for missed onward travel if we are delayed for some reason on the last day of travel

A strict maximum luggage weight of 15 kg packed in a soft-sided bag is required.
