High Street, Ludlow

The 62nd UK Coach Rally was held in Blackpool over the weekend of 23rd/24th of April 2016 and attracted 50 entrants from across the UK.

I visited on the gloriously sunny Saturday which saw a road run followed by driving tests along the Promenade and a display opposite the famous Blackpool Tower. A small trade display was also present.

This particular coach won the Van Hool Trophy for the top Van Hool coach at the rally.

I had to drive from Bristol to Manchester this morning so it seemed obvious to take a slight detour via Ludlow to whip in R&B Travel's 1983 Wright Contour Bedford YNT. I think she was was originally A951 RKH, new to Whittle of Kidderminster, but if anyone knows different, please shout. Thanks to the guys at R&B for their generous help and guidance.

R & B Travel were operating the 291 service between Tenbury Wells and Kidderminster with this Optare Solo in April 2013. Despite the Kidderminster destination, the bus is seen running out of service back to the companies base on Clee Hill near Ludlow.

TH16 RBT is a Van Hool TX16 Astron new to RB Travel of Kettering in April 2016. It made its debut at the UK coach rally in Blackpool and is seen here when only a week old, probably on its first tour in Stirling.

Kidderminster bus station - despite the "badge engineering" a humble Bedford & not a Volvo!

TH67 RBT is a MAN 19.420/Beulas Cygnus C53Ft coach, new to Bull (RB Travel), Pytchley, Northamptonshire in September 2017.

Seen arriving at RAF Fairford, Gloucestershire for the 2019 Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) is T2 APT, a Volvo B10M-62/Van Hool Alizee coach in the fleet of Bull (RB Travel), Pytchley, Northamptonshire. It had been new to Armchair, Brentford, Greater London in March 1999, becoming a Westbus vehicle in December 2006. It was acquired by Berkeley, Paulton, Somerset in February 2007, passing to Elliott (Memory Lane Coaches), Golborne, Greater Manchester in December 2008. It was reregistered C1 MLC in March 2009, but had reverted to its original mark by the time it joined Bull in June 2018.

B12 XXL is a Van Hool EOS C48Ft coach in the fleet of Biz Bus, Harlesden, London. It was new to Bottomley (Gain Travel), Wibsey, West Yorkshire as T52 AUA in April 1999. It passed to Star, Ossett, West Yorkshire in July 2001 and was re-registered KSK 858 in June 2002. It moved to Bull (RB Travel), Pytchley, Northamptonshire and was re-registered LKU 734 in April 2004, but was re-registered T743 ORP on sale to Moseley, South Elmsall (Q) in September 2011. It joined Biz Bus in May 2012 and was given its current mark in August 2012.

Local operator, R&B Travel of Clee Hill, provided most of the vehicles for this service.

PN08 CMK is a Marco Polo bodied MAN (a bit exotic for this part of the world!!) which was bought new.

TH16 RBT is a brand new Van Hool TX16 Acron coach for the fleet of RB Travel, Kettering, Northamptonshire. It is seen at the 2016 UK Coach Rally, held in Blackpool.

Mill Street, ludlow

NSK 919 is a VDL (DAF) SB4000/Van Hool Alizee coach in the fleet of Crawford, Neilston, East Renfrewshire. It was new to Galloway, Mendlesham, Suffolk as YJ05 PXT in April 2005, passing to Bull (RB Travel), Pytchley, Northamptonshire in September 2012, when it was promptly reregistered LKU 734. It reverted to its original mark on joining Crawford in March 2017 and was immediately given its current registration.

The partnership of LB Travel went their separate ways in 2003, Rod Lawman taking over Martins of Kettering while Roger Bull remained at Pytchley with a slight change of trading name to RB Travel. Mr Bull favoured Van Hool-bodied DAFs and ran this one for two years from March 2004.

791 WHT is a Mercedes-Benz Tourino C30Ft coach in the fleet of Baker, Weston-super-Mare, Somerset. It was new to Ellison, St Helens, Merseyside, as BU06 CUA in June 2006. It has passed to Bull (RB Travel), Pytchley, Northamptonshire by November 2009. It joined Baker in December 2012 and gained its current mark in March 2013. It is seen transporting Bristol City FC supporters to Wembley for the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final against Walsall.

T74WGH is seen in Kidderminster on the 291 Kidderminster-Tenbury Wells. It is a Mercedes-Benz O814D Plaxton Beaver and was new to Central Parking, Heathrow in May 1999.

I had been advised that R & B Travel would cease to operate the 722 Ludlow town service after todays service, so decided to get a last (and first!) shot of the company working the route. Here, Optare Solo BU54RBT is seen at the terminus of the 722 route outside the towns tourist information centre in the High street.

At around 3.45 during school term time, the bus stops in Ludlows Castle Square and Mill Street become a hive of service activity. Here are a selection of the vehicles seen on an April afternoon.

On hire to local operator R & B Travel from Stafford bus, UK52BUS is a Plaxton Beaver 2 bodied Mercedes Benz Vario, with rear mounted tail lift, and only 16 seats. It was working Shropshire Bus service 143 to Stottesdon, via Burwarton and Cleobury.
