Tour Overview

This Morocco explorer tour starts and finishes in Marrakech, known as the ‘Red City’. This ancient city is the beating heart of Morocco and its marketplace never sleeps.  We’ll arrange transfers from the airport to our Riad in the heart of the Medina for the welcome dinner and the next morning, we’re off to collect the bikes and ride!

The route from Marrakech to the Atlantic coast is a nice and easy intro to the tour, and once we reach Essaouira we’ll see the bluer than blue fishing fleet surrounded by the walled sea defences lined with cannon. Once again we’re staying within the walled Medina in another authentic Riad.

From the coast we’re heading south into the countryside and a night in a remote Riad in the The Atlas Mountains.  This will be our playground for the next few days whilst we ride both of the awe inspiring Tiz n’Test and Tiz n’Ticha Passes, snaking their way over 2000 metres skywards.  We’ll visit the ancient Tin Mal Mosque, stay in more fantastic authentic Riads, and soak up all that Morocco has to offer. Another stunning remote location follows as you visit UNESCO listed Ait Ben Haddou, an ancient Ksar or citadal. If it looks familiar then it may be because it has featured in many films like The Living Daylights, The Mummy, Gladiator and Jesus of Nazareth.  Our Riad overlooks the Ksar, so you can check in and change before wandering the ancient streets and alleys.

From Ait ben Haddou we ride the stunning roads of the Telouet Gorge  below the red rock cliffs, as we head back to Marrakech. We have two nights here and the day off the bike will allow you to lose yourself in the bustling Medina, bartering in the Souks, and visiting the Berber Museum… or relaxing with some Moroccan Whisky – Mint Tea!

Adventure Travel With a Glass of Wine

Touring Marrakech in a Ural Sidecar

By Jennifer Dombrowski 23 Comments

Marrakech is an assault on your senses. And I mean that in the best way possible. It’s a city that the scents of spices waft across the air. While you’re looking around trying to figure out where the scents are coming from, the man carrying the live chickens catches your eye. Meanwhile, the sounds of the pungi lure you toward the snakes swaying to the rhythmic tune of the pipes. And while you’re distracted by the sights, sounds and smells, a henna woman will grab the opportunity to brand you like she did to me. It’s so much to take in that you can’t possibly even know where to begin exploring the medina – unless you have the wonderful guides from Insiders Experience Marrakech to show you the best of medina from a local’s perspective and in a Ural sidecar motorcycle, no less.

A Sidecar Motorcycle Tour of the Medina

We truly had a bucket list trip to Marrakech with a birds-eye view over the Red City from a hot air balloon , eating like royalty on our Moroccan Food Adventures tour , staying in the lap of luxury at the new Mandarin Oriental Marrakech and zipping in and out of the medina in a sidecar motorcycle. Felix, a French expat living in Marrakech, was an incredible guide and we were thrilled to be invited to experience a tour so new it wasn’t even on the Insiders Experience website just yet (it is now).

Insiders Experience Marrakech

Felix picked us up at the Mandarin Oriental Marrakech. With the only sidecar motorcycle in Marrakech, it’s impossible to miss him. With Tim in the sidecar, I hopped on behind Felix and we were off.

There is so much to see in the medina and one of the areas not often visited by tourists is the mellah, or the Jewish Quarter. The first mellah was established in Fez in 1438 as a safe, walled neighborhood for the Jewish immigrants to live. Over time Morocco became home to the largest Jewish population in the Arab world and mellahs popped up in Rabat, Salé and Marrakech, as well as other cities.

A spice shop in the Jewish Quarter of Marrakech

We had time for a short walk around the mellah to witness the vibrant neighborhood full of silver shops and small spice vendors.

Jewish Quarter of Marrakech

The Jewish Quarters became rundown and overpopulated over the years. We could clearly see the difference between the mellah and other parts of the medina. Here the buildings were literally crumbling, though revitalization is prevalent on some streets. King Mohammed VI, the current king of Morocco, is welcoming to the Jewish population and has allocated money to restoring the synagogues and neighborhoods over the last few years.

Back on the sidecar motorcycle, we made our way through the medina with Felix sharing tidbits about his favorite streets, shops, restaurants and all sorts of insider tips. Sometimes we zipped along; other times it was slow going as Felix expertly navigated us through the narrow, walled streets.

Koutoubia Mosque minaret Marrakech

There’s no shortage of motorbikes in Marrakech, but at the time ours was the one and only sidecar motorcycle in all of Morocco (Insiders Experience has since added a small fleet). We were just as much a sight ourselves as the sights we were taking in, like the Koutoubia Mosque ‘s minaret, the tallest structure in Marrakech.

Insiders Experience Marrakech

Taking photos can sometimes be a tricky thing in Morocco. The locals might not like it at all and others might expect a little payment for the privilege of snapping a photo of their wares. Felix was fantastic about letting us know when photos were okay and when they weren’t. The king’s guards especially don’t like people snapping photos outside the palace and we were warned to put the camera away temporarily so it wouldn’t be confiscated.

Hot air ballooning in Marrakech

Outside the medina, we did a little off-roading through the Palmeraie. It’s the largest palm grove in the world and has hundreds of thousands of palm trees. This is also where you can come for camel rides right in Marrakech and the camels don’t mind photos at all. In fact, they’re total hams for the camera!

Marrakech khettra

The Palmeraie is also where you also get a look at the ancient khettra, a system of underground irrigation tunnels that carried water all the way from the melting snow in High Atlas Mountains to Marrakech and allowed the palm oasis to flourish. The khettra is no longer used since the water comes from modern reservoirs and a network of wells, but it’s interesting to see.

Palmeraie Marrakech

The Palmeraie is some of the most desirable land in all of North Africa and we spotted some incredible mansions as we drove the walled streets around it. Geographically, the Palmeraie isn’t a great distance from the mellah where we started our day; but with the bougainvillea framing the street and glimpses of immaculate gardens beyond the gated houses, it felt like a world away.

Insiders Experience Marrakech

We ended our fascinating tour of Marrakech in the Kasbah neighborhood. It’s hip and trendy here with local twenty-somethings relaxing with mint lemonades on rooftop terraces.

Clock Cafe Marrakech

We joined Felix for lunch at the Clock Cafe , which serves modern Moroccan fare. They’re known for their camel burgers and when in Morocco. We’d had over-cooked camel elsewhere and were a bit skeptical since the meat just isn’t good once it’s tough. Served with a tomato jam, the burger was actually delicious!

Felix definitely gave us a memorable experience in Marrakech and showed us one of the coolest ways to tour the city.

Isn’t it cute! We want to buy one now! Tim can drive, I’ll ride behind him and we just have to get Emma to stay in the sidecar.

What a interesting way to tour Marrakech! We just walked around the whole time – old fashion way. However, we stopped at the Clock Cafe too and loved it!

November 27, 2016 at 12:14 AM

This looks like such a fun way to see the city! I’ve been to Morocco twice now but I’ve still not made it to Marrakech. Hopefully third time lucky!

December 2, 2016 at 5:27 PM

Oh, you must! Usually we shy away from big cities, but Marrakech has so much charm. We truly enjoyed our time there.

Alouise says

November 27, 2016 at 1:26 AM

I’ve always wanted to visit Morocco. This sounds like such a fun way to see Marrakech. The Palmeraie is something I would have never even known to visit either. Thanks for the great information on this tour.

December 2, 2016 at 5:28 PM

We wouldn’t have known to visit the Palmeraie without Felix and this tour. Who knew such an interesting part of Morocco’s history lies there?

Candace and Spencer says

November 27, 2016 at 2:01 PM

What a wonderful post, almost felt like I was there. You described the feeling of walking through the Medina perfectly. Marrakesh is high on my bucket list and this post certainly has reinforced that. Love the side car bike you guys zipped around in, hehe looks so fun. That’s the way to do it, have a guide show you all the best bits. Thank you for the inspiration. Look forward to your next post.

December 2, 2016 at 5:29 PM

Marrakech is a must visit. There are so many beautiful parts to discover!

Jimmy and Tina says

November 27, 2016 at 3:58 PM

the Mint lemonade looks super yummy! I’d love to learn more about the Khetra and the water irrigation system that used to be in place, The deep hole that is left looks so dangerous if someone fell in one. I love the diversity of the different villages you passed through, Seeing the sights in a sidecar must have been a great experience! I also find it very interesting that there is such a large Jewish population, would love to learn more of the history of how it came to be.

December 2, 2016 at 5:30 PM

True. If that hole was in the US, it would be cordoned off with a giant warning sign. But I don’t think many tourists venture in to the Palmarie or even know to go there.

November 27, 2016 at 6:45 PM

Palmeraie is something new to me! Have to bear this in mind when planning a trip to Marrakesh. Touring the city in a sidecar motorcycle certainly looks like fun! I did it once in Melbourne, Australia, with the Harley Davidson.

It is a really fun way to get around! We want a Ural now.

November 27, 2016 at 7:49 PM

I was close to visiting Morocco but ended up having to changing our flights. I love the side car – you seem to be having so much fun! It looks and sounds like the perfect way to explore Marrakech – thanks for the intel. I will look Felix up when I visit the city.

December 2, 2016 at 5:31 PM

Oh no! You must reschedule your trip. We absolutely loved Morocco and can’t wait to go back and explore more.

Rhonda says

November 28, 2016 at 1:13 AM

Looks like you had a fantastic tour (and hit some of the same spots that I saw)in Marrakech. The sidecar is a novel way to do it. I mostly walked over the week or so I was there. I highly recommend staying in a riad in the medina to get a better local flavor.

December 2, 2016 at 5:33 PM

Yes, there are many lovely riads in the Medina. We stayed both in the Medina as well as at a resort just a few minutes from the Medina and both experiences were wonderful.

Claudia says

November 28, 2016 at 4:52 AM

Motorcycle travel with a sidecar looks like a lot of fun, though I don’t think I’d venture too far on my own. The water irrigation system is fascinating! Water in the desert is so critical to sustaining life.

December 2, 2016 at 5:34 PM

You can’t actually drive since the sidecar is entirely different than driving a motorcycle. You have an experienced guide and can really cover a lot of ground.

Shobha says

November 28, 2016 at 11:55 AM

We felt this same way about Marrakech. So much going on that it’s hard to know what to focus on. We retreated to our hotel gladly – next time I would consider this sidecar experience because that looks so cool.

I think you definitely have to tackle Marrakech with a plan. Hope you’ll return and give it another shot!

Trisha Velarmino says

December 1, 2016 at 8:23 AM

I love Morocco! I’ve been here for a couple of months and I really had a great stay in this country. Primarily, the people are so kind. I, myself wasn’t sure about safety when I first landed Morocco. I kept listening to people who said, “it’s very dangerous there. n contrary, I met a lot of kind people who offered me their homes, introduced me to their culture and taught me the language.

I’m glad that you enjoyed your trip here! Did you buy any of their crafts? They have a wide variety of shoes, bags, everything. Everything is here! I love their crafts!

December 2, 2016 at 5:36 PM

We found Morocco to be very safe and the people friendly.

Yes, we came home with spices, shoes, rugs and a tajine. Though we purchased most things from smaller villages where the sellers will give you a much better price than in Marrakech.

Ride through the Riches of Morocco: Experience the Best Morocco Motorcycle Tours

Alyssa Faraji

The fact that you’re here means there’s a spark of intrigue about seeing Morocco on a motorbike. Or you want to see what all the fuss is about. All I can say is I’m saving up for a motorbike trip to Morocco. Here’s why:

A motorcycle tour of Morocco allows you the chance and freedom to experience this beautiful and historical African country using all your senses. You can see, smell, hear, and feel the Sahara Desert, Atlas Mountains, Mediterranean Sea, Gorges, and cedar forests, plus so much more.

Those are just some of the sights. We’re talking about the desert in the south and snow in the north. In between, you have an array of beautiful cultures and vivid colors. And a mix of European and African history. Ooh, and Moroccan spices in delicious dishes. Let’s look at what Morocco offers a motorcycle rider and make some notes, shall we?

Motorcycle Tours In Morocco: Where To Begin

marrakech motorcycle tour

Exploring Morocco on a motorcycle tour is one of the best ways to see the country if you enjoy adventure with an extra thrill. However, you don’t have to be as extreme as this French electrician traveling solo through the Moroccan desert in 1993. He built his own motorcycle from a Citroen 2CV he pranged . It took him 12 days to make the conversion and ride to safety.

You can tour Morocco on your own steam by renting or taking in your own motorcycle. Or you can use one of the many Motorcycle tours on offer. Most of them rent out motorcycles and offer support.

The types of Morocco motorcycle tours discussed later in this article range from two-day motocross riding in sand dunes to 15-day adventures using paved roads. Each package deal varies in the itinerary and what’s included and excluded. The advantages of going on a motorcycle tour with an operator can consist of the following:

  • The choice of a guided tour or a self-drive tour,
  • Accommodation,
  • Mechanical support,
  • Backup vehicles,
  • Discounts and special offers,
  • Entertainment,
  • Guidance and information from a local who knows the area, and
  • Interesting activities.

Of course, it is possible to figure out all this on your own. Just read the next section and make notes! But if you prefer a bit of a safer option, using a motorcycle tour operator is likely to give you more guarantees – especially if you find yourself sitting in the desert with a bent wheel rim or no gas.

So, read on to learn about planning your own trip and see what some of the popular Morocco motorcycle tours offer. The shorter trips are for those who want to experience motocross riding in the dunes (they’re short because this isn’t Dakar). The longer trips are more scenic and take the paved roads, though some offer the option of a bit of dirt riding.

Touring Morocco On A Motorcycle: Things To Consider

Morocco will surely capture your heart with its diversity, culture, color, and extreme terrains. Just writing this, I want to pack my gear and head there myself! First, however, there are practicalities to consider.

If you’ve been on a long bike trip, you’ll know. It’s better to be over-prepared than under-prepared . And everything you take needs to fit into your pannier bags or other storage options.

Let’s consider some of the many things when planning a motorcycle tour in Morocco.

The Route You Plan To Take

marrakech motorcycle tour

The ten tours discussed later will give you a great idea of the popular motorcycle touring routes. However, if you want to explore Morocco without paying a tour guide, here are some popular roads to explore:

If you plan on renting a bike in Morocco, consider flying into Marrakesh. More bike rental companies are there, and the southern parts of Morocco are popular riding destinations.

Some useful maps to navigate Morocco include the following:

  • Sahara Overland
  • Morocco Overland

When Do You Plan To Ride In Morocco?

While you can ride all year round in Morocco, some areas are affected by adverse weather. For instance, the south of Morocco is usually hot , while the north can be rainy and snowy often . The inclement weather in the mountains makes the passes dangerous at times, so riders should stick to the main roads and check the weather forecast if traveling in those areas.

Morocco’s high season is from November to March because of its cooler weather. As a result, airfares and accommodation are usually more costly.

The best time to ride in Morocco is during March and April or late September and October . The weather is usually mild, and the landscape is beautiful.

Morocco’s low season is during the summer months because it gets so hot. It’s advisable to avoid riding in July and August unless you’re exploring the mountains or are at the coast. Riders tend to avoid the desert at this time because of the high risk of dehydration and extreme temperatures.

Renting A Bike Vs. Bringing In Your Own

You can bring your motorcycle into Morocco or hire a bike from a local tour operator. Should you wish to get your motorcycle to or from Morocco, you have a few choices:

  • Ride it there from Mauritania,
  • Ferry ride it over from Europe if you fancy riding your own, or
  • Ship it to Morocco from your home country.

In terms of ferrying your bike from Europe to Morocco or vice-versa, you have two options:

  • Between Spain and Morocco, crossing the Strait of Gibraltar, and
  • From Morocco to Mauritania, to Italy, France, or Spain.

Insurances, Permits, And Documents For You And Your Bike

Below are some documents you must have to enter and exit Morocco with relative ease. If you are taking your own motorcycle, there will be a few critical documents that you must have on hand to avoid hefty fines.

Your Documents

You must have a legitimate passport to enter and exit Morocco. Make sure your passport is correctly stamped when entering to avoid issues when leaving Morocco. Additionally, check to see if you need a visa to enter Morocco.

  • American citizens don’t need a visa if they are in Morocco for less than 90 days. However, their passport must be valid for entering and exiting Morocco.
  • Australian citizens don’t need a visa, either. However, their passport must have an empty page when entering Morocco. Additionally, their passports must be valid for 6 months after exiting Morocco.
  • Swiss, EU, UK, and EEA citizens only need a permit if their passport is valid for their three-month stay as a visitor.

According to Moroccan law, motorcyclists must have an International Motor Insurance Card (Green Card) as proof of insurance from their insurer at home. Alternatively, they can purchase temporary insurance locally at the border posts. If you have insurance, ensure it is translated into French or Arabic for the local officials.

Documents For Your Bike

Moroccan officials require a Temporary Vehicle Importation Permit (TVIP) for your bike. You can either get this form online or when you cross a border post. Keep this form with you, as you will need it when leaving Morocco. In addition to this temporary permit, you’ll need the registration documents and proof of ownership .

If you are renting the motorcycle from a rental company, you’ll need the rental agreement with the company’s approval so that you can take the vehicle to Morocco. In addition, the motorcycle owner must provide a Power of Attorney, legalized by the local authorities (either Moroccan or where the company is based).

Accommodation In Morocco

Morocco offers various accommodations, from hotels to guesthouses, hostels, and camping facilities. Some of the tours listed below provide the opportunity of staying a night in a nomadic tent in the desert. However, if you want a Moroccan experience, look for a riad in Marrakech.

Other Useful Traveling Tips

Since you’re planning a motorcycle adventure in the desert, staying hydrated is wise. As in, drink water at every opportunity. I can’t stress that enough. Keep the steering dampers (wink-wink) to a minimum because alcohol will dehydrate you. Additionally, the heat and wind will dehydrate you like a piece of jerky, and you might become delirious. Stay hydrated!

Cash is king:

Something else to remember is that Morocco is mainly cash-based. You’ll need to carry cash as many small villages don’t have card machines. It’s suggested to keep some smaller denomination notes on hand. Loose change is challenging to come by, so saving 10- or 20-dirham notes is a good idea for making small purchases and giving tips.

Even though the villages in Morocco have at least one fuel station, the fuel quality or availability might not be great. So, it’s a good idea to carry spare fuel with you.

Morocco’s paved roads are mostly smooth, and their existing city motorway network is maintained and extended continuously. You can expect to pay a toll for using these motorways, depending on the exits.

Paved roads that run through the stony desert might have potholes and become covered with dust and gravel. Be cautious of passing vehicles throwing up loose stones in these areas, as they could inflict some damage on you or your bike. Likewise, a large pothole can easily bend the rim of your tire if you catch it at the wrong angle.

Road accidents are common in Morocco, and traveling at night is not advisable . One should ride defensively in Morocco, expecting vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians to cut before you at any moment.

Finally, police roadblocks are common in Morocco. While they might not stop tourists quickly, they will ask for documents if you approach the Algerian border, Rif Mountains, or are in Western Sahara.

These agencies typically provide a range of motorbike options, from smaller scooters to larger touring bikes.

To rent a motorbike in Morocco, you will need a valid driver’s license and, in some cases, an International Driving Permit for North Africa. It is important to ensure that you have the appropriate insurance coverage and are familiar with the local traffic rules and road conditions before setting off on your motorbike adventure.

Do I need an International Driving Permit to ride a motorcycle in Morocco?

While it is not always required, obtaining an International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended when planning to ride a motorcycle in Morocco. Some rental agencies may ask for it, and it can also be helpful in case of a traffic stop or an accident. Ensure that your IDP and your original driver’s licence are both valid and have the appropriate motorcycle endorsement.

What type of insurance should I get when renting a motorcycle in Morocco?

When renting a motorcycle, it is crucial to have comprehensive insurance coverage, including third-party liability, theft, and damage coverage. Some rental agencies may include insurance in the rental price, while others might offer it as an additional purchase. Be sure to clarify the terms and conditions with the rental agency before you set off on your journey.

Are there specific traffic rules I should be aware of while riding a motorcycle in Morocco?

While traffic rules in Morocco are generally similar to those in other countries, it is essential to familiarise yourself with local regulations and road signs. Be prepared for potentially aggressive driving behaviour and unpredictable road conditions. Always wear a helmet, obey speed limits, and be cautious when overtaking or navigating through busy city streets.

Is it safe to ride a motorcycle in Morocco?

Riding a motorcycle in Morocco can be safe if you take the necessary precautions, maintain situational awareness, and follow local traffic rules. Be prepared for a variety of road conditions, such as potholes, sand, and gravel, particularly in rural or remote areas. Exercise caution when riding at night or in adverse weather conditions, as visibility can be reduced.

Can I take a motorcycle on a ferry in Morocco?

If you plan to travel between the mainland and the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla or across the Strait of Gibraltar, you will need to purchase a ticket for yourself and your motorcycle. Marrakech

Marrakech is a city located in central Morocco, inland, at the foot of the Atlas Mountains. One of the most evocative places in the world, just the name conjures up images of this cultural melting pot – sandstone buildings, dusty streets and towering minarets against deep blue skies immediately spring to mind. . It is truly the city of entertainment in Morocco. In the center of Marrakech is a square, Djemaa el Fna, which is the operating point for entertainers. MOROCCO OFF ROAD ADVENTURE

  • What is Included

The ultimate test of your off-road skills, this adventure goes where few fear to tread

During this 9-day motorbike adventure tour we will cross the Atlas twice through the two most famous passes and discover some of the least frequented pistes of Southern Morocco. Our tour will start and end in the Imperial City of Marrakesh. During the tour we will ride the Tizi n’Test and Tichka passes through the Atlas, spend a night in a special camp in the desert and ride the less frequented dirt roads of the South. You will have the opportunity to see the different sides of Morocco, from the greenery of the mountains and the multicoloured face of the desert, while exploring Marrakech and Ouarzazate, the home of many famous movie scenes. We will ride fast-paces roads filled with switchbacks and flowing corners and we will take the bikes through some rocky off-road sections where speed will be replaced by technicality. This trip is recommended to experienced riders and adventurers who wish to participate in a unique tour.

Day 1 : Arrival Arrival to Marrakesh. Transfer to your SPA hotel, where you will be able to settle in and relax by the pool before the start of the trip the next morning. You will meet your tour guide and go through the briefing session as well as the formalities required before the start and you will receive your welcome pack.

Day 2: Marrakech – Ait Benhaddou (approx. 200 km)

We’ll pick up the bikes at the workshop and head out of the city to conquer the High Atlas. The first riding day will give you a good taste of the stunning gravel tracks and amazing landscapes this land has to offer. After a first tarmac section we head off-road high into the mountains on narrow tracks and tight gravel switchbacks, before returning to tarmac and climbing the Tichka pass at 2260m. We then take the smaller road through the Ounila valley to ride through remote villages and breathtaking scenery. We will head to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ait Benhaddou and you will have the opportunity to explore this unique Kasbah before heading to the hotel.

Day 3: Ouarzazate – M’Hamid (approx. 270 km)

This day starts with a mix of fast gravel tracks and tricky crossings through the stony riverbeds to get to Ouarzazate. After a quick coffee break, we’ll tackle great tarmac roads, cross the Anti Atlas and then ride through the Draa valley heading south. After a lunch in Zagora and a last fuel stop in Tagounite, we head off-road for the firs encounter with sand. Our last section gets us through gravel tracks and sandy sections before hitting the small dunes we need to cross to get to our desert camp for a good rest under the beautiful desert sky.

Day 4: M’Hamid – Foum Zguid (approx. 150 km)

The challenges begin. We will experience a day of riding the remote pistes of the Sahara. The tracks are a  mix of sand, gravel tracks, rocky sections and more sand. Off-road experience is a must to handle the heavy bikes on this terrain. Although the distance seems small, it is challenging riding and a tiring day for most. You will enjoy the remoteness of the desert and will be amazed by the varied terrain it offers. We’ll sleep in a beautiful hotel so you can enjoy great food, a nice pool and a good night rest.

Day 5: Foum Zguid – Tafraoute (approx. 300 km)

Day 6: Tafraoute – Agadir (approx. 200 km)

This riding day will take us to our wonderful accommodation near the surfing spots of Morocco. Depending on the option chosen by the group, we either ride the more remote, twisty roads of the Anti-Atlas before descending towards Agadir, or we head west towards the coast for more sand riding. Either way, we will cross the crazy traffic of Agadir, to ride our final stretch to the hotel on the stunning coastal road along the Atlantic. We’ll relax at a wonderful surf / yoga resort at the beach.

Day 7 : Agadir – Taroudant (approx. 200 km)

We usually start the day with a ride on the beach – something you can seldom experience elsewhere. Once the fun is over, we’ll ride the remote, narrow – and sometimes broken – roads of the Atlas towards Taroudant. After a short coffee break, we head off-road and will tackle the rocky, challenging tracks winding up and down the valleys. A mix of loose gravel, rocks, off-camber slippery slate will ensure you stay concentrated throughout. Once back on the tarmac, we’ll stop for lunch and then head to our hotel within the old walls of the city. Before dinner, we’ll have the option to wander around this busy, culturally rich town.

Day 8: Taroudant – Marrakech (approx. 250 km)

We kept some fun for the last day. We’ll leave Taroudant behind, and will climb the Tizi n’Test for a great ride and amazing views for a coffee at the top of the pass. This road is a mix of great tarmac and some challenging bits, being rated as one of the most dangerous roads in the world. We’ll then descend towards Marrakech but will make a detour after lunch, to conclude this great trip with some afternoon fun in the Agafay desert. Loose gravel, riverbeds, steep climbs and descents and some narrow single trails will be on the menu in the afternoon. We then head back to the city, refuel the bikes and take them back to the workshop before you are transported back to the hotel for a quick shower and some rest. The day is not over, as our farewell dinner is scheduled for that evening in a stunning location in town.

Day 9: Departure

Depending on your flight time, you might take the opportunity to relax at the hotel or decide to take surfing lessons. Those of you who opted to extend their holidays will remain to enjoy the weather and the many activities on offer, while those leaving will be transferred to the airport through their pre-arranged pick-up.

Morocco Motorcycle Tours Tips

Advantages of taking an organized trip versus doing it yourself.

On a motorcycle tour of Morocco with IMTBIKE, our guides will handle all of the bureaucracy and the details— the only exception being in the event that a visa is required for your country of origin, in which case you must obtain that. When it comes to police presence and customs, just be patient and enjoy the show! The Moroccan border is just the first act of our experience in Northern Africa. Now the real adventure can begin! How to plan a motorcycle trip in Morocco: the best routes and our travel tips

For a motorcycle trip in Morocco, it is essential to have all of the necessary documents in order— both for the driver and the motorcycle. This may include a visa based on your country of origin, so be sure to check that out! Meanwhile, Moroccan customs is modernizing day-by-day. Increasingly, the police officers are younger and more knowledgeable in multiple languages. Once there, remember that you cannot take photographs or videos in the border areas, and that drones are prohibited in Morocco. Read more on our Morocco Motorcycle Tours blog

Motorcycle on the road riding in south of Spain to Algeciras

Day 1 ° Fuengirola - Ceuta - Tetuan

160 km ° d

We start our engines at 10 am and drive to Algeciras... Andalusia's port to North-Africa. Our first connection to Africa is a tiny piece of Spain in the continent, Ceuta, from where we will cross to Morocco. Today, it will feel like Costa del Sol in Morocco when we drive to Tetouan on the coastal road. Tetouan is also the stop of our first night in Morocco.

Atlas mountains in Morocco and motorcycles parked on the side

Day 2 ° Tetouan - Al Hoceima - Nador

438km, 6h 9m ° b,d

Today you smile easily inside your helmet from curve to curve when we follow the gorgeous coastal road to Nador. Morocco is Africa's gift for bikers and you understand very soon why! One great thing here is also, the police do not tease you if you don't drive like crazy! Our second night in Morocco will be in the port city, of Nador.

In Morocco mountains a sandy road where a dark sheppard dog is crossing the road with a herd of sheep

Day 3 ° Nador - Midelt

408km, 5h 19m ° b,d

Yes, you will see many lambs, goats, donkeys and dogs in Morocco. The good thing is that they a used to traffic and do not react to it. Naturally, you need to be awake as always on the bike! :) Today we are crossing a lot of peaceful countryside from Nadar to Midelt... most of the villages look like they looked 100 years ago. It's very different from the modern coastline you saw on the first day!

Day 4 ° Midelt - Errachidia - Merzouga

264km, 4h 2m ° b,d

Riff mountains we were driving on our 2nd day. Today we drive over the magnificent small Atlas mountains on the way from Midelt the desert city of Errachidia. Our driving ends today next to the dunes of the Sahara and from there we will continue with Camels to our desert camp! It will be a tent night... but probably the most luxurious tent night you have ever had! :)

Day 5 ° Merzouga - Gorges Du Dadès

273km, 4h 12m ° b,d

Yesterday was a great driving day and... and today is a great driving day also! First, we drive to Tinghir, from where we turn into the magnificent Gorges Du Todra Valley! GDT is also a great place for a mint tea or two with a Berber omelette... and for many pictures. From the Gorges du Todra we drive to another awesome gorge... Gorges du Dadès where we also stay overnight!

2 bikers and motorcycles front of Col Tichka in the High Atlas mountains in Morocco

Day 6 ° Gorges Du Dadès - Ouarzazate - Marrakech

355km, 5h 34m ° b,d

In the morning we drive the best of Gorges du  Dadès. After that, we cross the impressive High Atlas mountains and climb up to 2260m from sea level. Going down is even more fun, on the side of Marrakech, the new road is ready! Evening in colourful Marrakech, from here you get everything you did not know you need in the morning when you woke up! :)

Day 7 ° Marrakech

Marrakech as you wish... it's a day off! You might not want to drive around with your bike... but you can always take a horse taxi from one sight to an other!

3 bikers on motorcycles riding and passing under a large moroccan gate on their way to Beni Mellal in Morocco

Day 8 ° Marrakech - Beni Mellal

249km, 4h 17m ° b,d

Today is a very nice and relaxing driving day towards the northeast! Lots of nice countryside, beautiful mountains and lots of fun curves and bends! We drive the second part of our day on the lower sloper of High Atlas! Our destination today is the modern Beni Mellal.

Motorcycle and biker riding towards Fes after riding the Atlas Mountains in his back. He is alone on the road

Day 9 ° Beni Mellal - Fes

288km ° 5h 23m ° b,d

Today we pass the other one of Morocco's skiing centres at Ifran, but yes this is a motorcycle tour so we don't go skiing... and there is no snow this time of the year! Instead, we drive to Fes, which is one of Morocco's old capitals with a very lively Medina... old town! And our driving day is nice, with a lot of hills, mountains and curves! The main food for the bikers! :)

workers preparing colours in old cuves in world's oldest tannery in Fes Morocco

Day 10 ° Fes - Chefchauen

306km ° 4h 38m ° b,l,d

Morocco is known for its sheepskin and Fes leather factories! In the morning, we do a couple of hour's circuit in the labyrinths of Medina’s old town. The so-called must-visit in Fes is the world's oldest tannery, Chouara Tannery! And no matter what, after the Medina of Fes, we have another wonderful driving day ahead of us. The film Smurfs has not been shot in Chefchaouen but in Juzcar in Andalusia! Chefchauen is blue because it was painted blue by Spanish Jewish refugees in 1492 after escaping the Inquisition from Europe!

in the sea cruising a Ferry Trasmediterranea to Ceuta

Day 11 ° Chefchauen - Ceuta - Fuengirola

256km, 5h 29m ° b

In the morning after breakfast, we go with our feet into the Blue Medina of Chefchauen for an hour or two! Latest 11 am we start our engines and head towards Spain in Africa, Ceuta! From Ceuta a fast ferry to Algeciras, from where to Fuengirola! In Fuengirola, we are in the late afternoon and our Africa adventure has come to the end!
